The Pao deposits of iron ore are in the State of Bolivar, Venezuela, near Upata, about 30 miles south of the Orinoco River and 90 miles east of Ciudad Bolivar. They were discovered 4 or 5 years ago and have not yet been developed to the stage of mining. In March-April, 1929, the writer devoted a week to the examination of these deposits. The maps, drill records and chemical analyses presented herewith were derived from original sources, and the field photographs were made by the writer. The petrographic and metallographic data are from notes by C. S. Ross and M. N. Short, of the U. S. Geological Survey, who have kindly collaborated in these special phases of the study. The Iron Obebodies Topography and Accessibility The deposits are in a region of low mountains representing northern outliers of the Guayanan Highlands. These mountains reach altitudes of 1800 to more than 2000 ft. above sea level, as determined by aneroid barometer. The iron ore is found on mountain crests that reach altitudes of 1915 to 1930 ft., and may be followed down precipitous slopes for 200 • to 300 ft. or more. The greatest vertical range in outcrop is nearly 400 ft., and drilling has indicated that the ore extends to this depth below the surface in one place, at least. The superior hardness of the iron ore accounts for the preservation of the local mountain crests with the intermediate valleys eroded in softer granitic rock. The deposits of iron ore are reached by a private road for automobiles branching northeast from the Ciudad Bolivar-Upata road, a distance of about 12 miles. This road was used in 1928-29 by trucks for transportation of food and camp supplies, gasoline, drilling equipment, etc., but was not suitable for the transportation of iron ore. Between Ciudad Bolivar and the iron-ore area the western two-thirds of the automobile road passes through nearly level, open country known as the savanna, largely used for grazing cattle. Errors in measurement of reservoir pressure include: (I) gauge errors, and (a) interpretation errors. Gauge errors may be reduced by: (a) reading charts with a comparator microscope, (b) use of hard metal stylus points to give clear lines, (6) insuring temperature equilibrium, and (d) making multiple tests. Check calibrations are equally as important as check well tests. A statistical analysis of such check runs shows quantitatively the advantages of a standardized "zero pressure line'' and of the use of field calibrations made at bottom-hole temperature on the same chart run in the well. Interpretation errors include: (a) fluid heads, which should be corrected to the top of the perforations on the basis of well-fluid gravity and from the top of the perforation to the datum level on the basis of reservoir-fluid gravity, and (b) gradients around the well. Conventional shut-in periods may be entirely inadequate to overcome these, necessitating a reservoir study based on build-up curve data, reservoir history, core analysis and any other available information. Interest in engineering studies of the pressure changes in oil and gas reservoirs is increasing. This type of work yields important information and doubtless will be greatly extended in the future. One of the factors limiting the work, however, is the accuracy with which the reservoir pressures can be determined; for if the inaccuracies in the pressure measurements represent an appreciable percentage of the pressure changes, the engineer is seriously handicapped, and must delay the reservoir study until the reservoir pressure has changed a relatively large amount. This delay can greatly reduce the benefits of such studies, at least from the point of view of aiding the leasing, drilling and completion programs. Thus, from the point of view of reservoir analysis, it is frequently important to obtain the most accurate pressure data possible early in the history of any field—particularly for the gas-distillate fields now being developed. This paper deals with improvements in the measurement of bottom-hole pressures that permit pressures even as high as 4000 or 5000 lb. per sq. in. to be determined with gauge errors of only+ ±I to 2 lb. per sq. in. Since pressures out in the reservoir rather than in the bottom of the hole concern the reservoir analyst, differences between bottom-hole pressures and actual reservoir pressures are also considered. In general, errors in pressure measurement may be divided into: 1. Gauge errors: a. Errors due to inaccuracies in reading the pressure charts. b. Errors due to irreproducibility of the pressure element and recording system. c. Errors caused by failure to allow the gauge to reach temperature equilibrium. 2. Internretation errors: a. THIS paper outlines a method for rapid production of flat, granular surfaces on many of the medium hard- alloys. Grinding wheels and fabrics on wheels are not used; the purpose is accomplished by rubbing on emery papers and on fine abrasives heaped on hand boards. The advantages of chromic acid in the solutions for etching nickel and copper alloys are explained. Steels may require an additional step in the mechanical smoothing owing to the lack of an ideal etchant. Chloric acid is a. rapid etchant for steel. Thirty-six photomicrographs illustrate the steps in smoothing and the clearness with which structures can be rapidly exposed. New structures in low-carbon steels are announced. After a little practice, many materials can be finished within two or three minutes. CUPRONICKELS In the previous papers on the metallography of copper and magnesium which the author has presented to this Institute there has been an attempt to demonstrate the advantages of minimizing the mechanical work of surfacing and depending more on chemical means; the present paper continues the research into a still wider field. It is obvious that the success of a chemical method for smoothing and etching depends almost entirely on the use of a suitable reagent. The etchant must remove the surface granulations and outline the structures. A very special type of reaction between reagent and metal must be displayed. Promiscuous corrosion or the intensification of the attack about local couples -formed by impurities or components must not be in evidence. There are several reagents that etch highly polished nickel and copper alloys very well. Acidified ferric chloride solutions, concentrated and dilute nitric acid solutions, and nitric and acetic acids in acetone have -been used to good advantage for the purpose. However, if they are expected to etch rather deeply-that is, smooth as well as characterize-the results may be far from satisfactory.

As electrical power is used to a greater extent on the Rand than in any other mining center, it is thought that a short description of the methods used and results obtained may be of interest. In comparing Rand practice with that on other fields, several general factors should be borne in mind: First, the mines are all working on large tonnages of low-grade ore (average $6.50). The annual crushing rate is about 27,000,000 tons. Second, the mines are all grouped under the financial and engineering control of mining houses, so that the results of a group, rather than an individual mine, are open for study, and practice follows more uniform lines. Third, coal of fair quality (about 12,000 B.t.u.) can be obtained for $2 to $3 per ton. Good supplies of condensing water are, however, scarce, and have to be carefully stored. Power Supply Power is supplied by the Victoria Falls & Transvaal Power Co., Ltd., and its subsidiary, the Rand "Mincs Power Supply Co. Both companies, which are practically one from an engineering point of view, operate the following stations, all fecding into the same system. A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

Measurement of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (1) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quanti tative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carno-tite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been 'designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement. Introduction During the last few years we have witnessed an unprecedented rise in the demand for radioactive minerals, coming as a direct consequence of the discovery of nuclear fission and subsequent developments, the full impact of which is by no means in sight even now. It remains certain, however, that radioactive minerals, and especially those which can be used as ores of uranium and thorium, will continue to be of great interest not only to the prospector and mine operator but also to the various inspection parties envisioned by most of the schemes advanced for the control of nuclear energy on a world-wide basis. It is clear, therefore, that the measurement of radioactivity in rocks in the field as well as in samples in the laboratory has become a method of geophysical exploration of some importance. If we consider the recent technological advances in the general fields of nuclear physics and electronics it seems proper to review the present status of the methods and procedures of radiological exploration. General Considerations Equilibrium If we take a fixed amount of uranium that has just been purified, some of it will immediately start decaying into its first daughter element which in turn decays into its own daughter and so on down the line until the last daughter is reached—a stable isotope of lead. The rate at which a radioactive element decays is frequently expressed as the half-life, which is the length of time required for the decay of half the atoms in a given amount. The half-life is inversely proportional to the decay constanl X which is defined as the number of atoms which decay in one unit of time divided by

ORIGINALLY the Babbitt experimental plant grinding circuit consisted of one rod mill 10 ½ ft diam by 12 ft long in open circuit followed by two ball mills 10 ½ ft diam* 12 ft long in parallel circuit. Shortly after operations commenced it was apparent that the rod mill could not function satisfactorily at the required 125 gross tons of ore per hr. Attempts to operate at this rate produced: 1) excessive tramp material over rod mill trommel screen which could not be handled in this open circuit and 2) excess build-up of coarse ore in the ball mill circuits because of inadequate rod mill grinding. Since Reserve Mining Co. ore must be ground to 85 pct -325 mesh to produce a satisfactory iron concentrate, an efficient and controlled grinding circuit is highly important. The first step in trying to resolve this grinding problem was to determine which unit of the circuit was actually in trouble and to what extent. A series of tests conducted at a lower tonnage rate of rod mill feed indicated that one ball mill could grind satisfactorily at rates up to 70 gross tons of rod mill feed per hr.

THE Grand Junction Pilot Plant, operated by National Lead Co. Inc., for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, is engaged in the amenability testing of orebodies to establish design and cost data for commercial mills and to test new processes for recovery of uranium from ores. Test work was performed to study the effects of several variables on leaching of uranium ores in carbonate solutions. Many of these variables had been investigated in the laboratory, but pilot plant tests were desirable to evaluate their importance in semi-works equipment and to predict optimum operating conditions for future commercial mills. The results of these tests should serve as a guide in selecting the most efficient and economical method of leaching uranium ores amenable to a carbonate process. This article is concerned with a process in which uranium is extracted from the ore by a hot Na2CO3- NaHCO3 solution; the uranium-bearing solution is separated from the solid residue by filtration, and uranium is then precipitated by chemical means.

Expressions are derived for tke orientation factors appearing in the Grana to -Lucke theory of dislocation damping, for fcc crystals. The factors are given as functions of the elastic constants, the direction cosines of the specimen axis, atld the direction cosines of the particle displacemeizts, for darnping due to dislocation motion on each of the twelve possible slip systems as ixell as lor simultaneous dislocation rnotion on all twelve systems. RECENTLY Green' has outlined the general procedure for calculation of the modes of wave propagation in a single crystal possessing a given crystallo-graphic orientation. In addition he has suggested how the results of such calculations along with calculations of the resolved shear-stress factors for slip enable the orientation-dependent factors (orientation factors) appearing in the Granato-Lucke theory of dislocation damping to be calculated. However, reen' assumed that the maximum stress on dislocations was in the direction of the particle displacement of the elastic wave giving rise to the dislocation damping. The present cal'culations show that this is an oversimplified approach appropriate only to special cases of high crystallographic symmetry. The exact calculation of stress on the dislocations can only be obtained by resolving the nine components of stress associated with the elastic wave into the appropriate slip direction and then summing. In this paper the general expressions for orientation factors are derived for fcc crystals in terms of the elastic constants, the direction cosines of the particle displacements, and the direction cosines of the specimen axis, bearing in mind the point mentioned above. Equations are presented which give the orientation factors for damping due to dislocation motion on each of the twelve possible slip systems as well as for simultaneous dislocation motion on all twelve systems arising from elastic-wave propagation. These orientation factors are appropriate to attenuation measurements made by the pulse-echo technique, where the elastic wave is a traveling wave. They will be compared with those for the case of a standing wave as derived by Granato and Lucke which are appropriate to measurements of internal friction by the resonance technique. The expressions for the orientation factors are compared with the five values given by insruch,' based on unpublished work of Granato and Liicke, for positions of highest symmetry in the stereographic triangle. The various equations derived for modes of wave propagation and orientation factors have been evaluated for the case of aluminum crystals at 1-deg intervals throughout the stereographic triangle. These results will be presented in the form of contour diagrams in a subsequent paper3 and their relevance to ultrasonic measurements discussed. ORIENTATION FACTORS The coordinate system used for the calculations is shown in Fig. 1 and all specimen axes are taken to lie in the shaded standard triangle. THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. Some of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized statement of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey's Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part discusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have contributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways. General Geology Pre-Cambrian Rocks.—The oldest rocks in the district are schists, correlated with the Idaho Springs formation of the Front Range. Quartz-mica schist predominates, but other types occur locally; almost everywhere the rocks show considerable lit-par-lit injection. Intrusive into the schists are two varieties of granite, only one of which is widespread. It is a fine-grained, porphyritie, gray granite correlated with the Silver Plume granite of the Front Range. THE sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale " of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires, for given operating conditions, a greater average output, with improved product for subsequent processing, than can be obtained by manual control. RELATION OF SOUND TO USEFUL GRINDING ENERGY Experience has taught us that there is a difference in character as well as in intensity of sound between a mill grinding wet and one grinding dry, in open or closed circuit, to obtain a coarse or fine product, on the same material, to say nothing of the effect with a variety of different materials. Broadly speaking, a wet-grinding mill operates best at a lower sound level than the same mill grinding dry, with other conditions the same. Several reasons for this variation in sound intensity under these conditions can be advanced, but the important point is that there is a difference, based upon practical results. Since these reasons may be more or less involved, and may be subject to much discussion, only one will be considered here. It is apparent that two balls hitting together or a ball striking the lining, if there is no intervening material, will produce the maximum sound. If a complete cushion of material is placed between the balls or ball and liner, so that the energy is dissipated without doing useful work, the balls will be unable to create enough pressure or force to fracture the particles, and the sound will be at a minimum. At some point in between-that is, where there is sufficient material between the balls or ball and liner so that the ball will fracture the particles without mashing them unduly-the sound

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid cobalt and a number of dilute cobalt alloys Was measured in the temperature range 1550" to 1700°C at nitrogen pressures to 1 atm. At 1600°C and 1 atm nitrogen pressure, the solubility in pure cobalt is 0.0047 wt pct [3.8 cu cm (stp) per 100 g Co]. The standard free- energy change for the solution reaction 1/2 N,(g) = gout pct in Co) is iF - 10,000 + 5.24 T cal per g atom N. The alloying elements Cv, Cu, Mo, Nb, Tu, W, and V increase the nitrogen solubility, while Al, Fe, Ni, and Si decrease the nitrogen solubility. THE solubility of nitrogen in cobalt was studied previously by Sieverts, Busch and Dodd,2 and Schenck, Frohberg, and Graf.3 Sieverts investigated the solution below the melting point of cobalt, and Busch and Dodd worked with the liquid metal; however, neither study found any solubility for nitrogen in cobalt. Schenck et al, reported a solubility of 0.005 wt pct N in cobalt at 1600°C. Seagle et al. 4 reported residual nitrogen in cobalt after electron-beam melting, although no reasons were ventured for the presence of this interstitial impurity. This investigation was undertaken to clarify these inconsistencies, and to provide additional data on atomic interactions in dilute metallic solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE This study was well-suited to the Sieverts' method, which has not changed significantly since its introduction by Sieverts. 5 The apparatus was of the same design as that described by Humbert and Elliott, 6 with a reaction bulb similar to that reported by Weinstein and Elliott. 7 The buret was not water-jacketed, but the measured gas volumes were corrected for small changes in room temperature. The melt temperature was measured by a disappear ing-filament optical pyrometer sighted through a prism onto the melt surface. Temperature calibration was made based on a measurement of the melting point of pure cobalt taken as 1495°C. The difference between the reciprocal of the observed and the true temperatures was assumed to be a constant, neglecting the changes in emissivity with small additions of alloying elements. The total error in gas-volume measurement caused by accuracy limitations in reading the mercury level in the buret, variation in ambient temperature, and variation in melt temperature was about 0.5 cu cm. This represents approximately 10 pct of the total solubility, and is a larger relative error than in previous studies6-' because of the small nitrogen solubilities encountered in the present investigation. The source and purity of the materials used are listed in Table IA. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used throughout the investigation. Examination of the crucibles after solidification of the melts showed no reaction or penetration. Alloying of the cobalt melt was accomplished with the dropping technique described by Humbert. 6 The investigation was started using cobalt from African Metals Corp. in shot form, but this material was not of sufficient purity and did not yield consistent solubility results. Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. cobalt was then used throughout the investigation. In experiments involving alloying elements which could react with oxygen dissolved in the melt, the cobalt was further refined by annealing at 1400°C in a dry-hydrogen atmosphere. This treatment, described by Woolley and Pehlke, 8 markedly reduced the oxygen content. The oxygen and nitrogen analyses of the cobalt used in this study are presented in Table IB. RESULTS Hot Volume. The hot volume was measured prior to each run and was 50 to 55 cu cm (stp) at 1600°C. It increased linearly with increasing pressure and decreasing melt temperature. Pure Cobalt. The rate has been studied of the hydrogen reduction of nickel ions in acetate -buffered solutions, using a nickel catalyst. At temperatures between 130°and 160°C, the rate is found to be proportional to the catalyst area, the nickel ion concentration, and the hydrogen pressure. The effect of hydrogen ions is to reduce the observed rate, likely by causing the reverse reaction (dissolution) to proceed. The experimental activation energy was found to be 25 kcal per mole. THE precipitation of metals and lower oxides from solution by hydrogen reduction has been quite actively investigated during the past few years.1 In the case of nickel, the kinetics of the precipitation have been studied in ammonia solution2 but extension of this study to acid solutions has not attracted much interest, largely because of the unfavorable thermodynamics at all but the lowest acidities. For example, Schaufelberger foundg that only 10 pct reduction of nickel could be effected in sulphate solutions. One kinetic study of the reduction of Ni++ has been reported by Knacke, Pawlek, and Sussmuth,4 in which the order of the reaction was found to be one in nickel ion and one-half in hydrogen pressure. No mention was made as to the part played by the nickel catalyst, or by the pH of the solution. Moreover, the activation energy reported (4 .12 kcal per mole) is so low as to lead to some question as to whether diffusion might be playing a major role in determining the kinetics. We have recently completed a study5 of the kinetics of the hydrogen precipitation of nickel from acetate-buffered acidic solutions whose results confirm and amplify those of Knacke et al. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The work was done in a high-pressure autoclavee by the usual technique of removing small samples of the solution for analysis. Nickel analysis was done colorimetrically by the dimethylglyoxime method.' The catalyst used was carbonyl nickel powder (Standard A powder of the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.) which was found to be composed of spheres of less than 350 mesh. The surface area of the powder was determined in this laboratory by the B. E. T. method to be 1.85 sq m (m2) per g. The catalyst was added to the solution only after the proper temperature and pressure had been reached. Agitation of the baffled system was by a turbine-type impeller, rotated at speeds between 400 and 750 rpm. The reduction rate was found to be independent of the stirring rate, so it was assumed that diffusion in the liquid does not limit the rate. In typical experiments, the nickel concentration was unchanged during an induction period of variable length. The concentration then decreased sharply, and gradually levelled off to approach the final equilibrium value. In some cases, notably at high stirring rates, the nickel concentration was found to increase considerably during the induction period, and then to decrease. In all cases, the rate was determined from the slope of the tangent to the rate curve as the concentration first decreased below the initial value. This is seen in Fig. 1. The rate measurements were found to be reproducible to within about 5 and to be quite independent of the nature or duration of the induction period. The range of conditions used is given in Table I.

However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the ll-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. J. F. Myers (authors' reply)-—Mr. Garms points his finger at the 11 tons of "sterile" balls added to the Tri-cone mill. A fact so interesting to us that we felt it should be reported. Clearly, ball slippage at the existing mill speed prevented any further transfer of power from the shell to the ball mass. The assumption is, of course, that we would get a corresponding increase in work done. Our reported data (CIME meeting, Vancouver, 1946) shows a gain of work accomplished of 7.6 pct as we decreased the ball size from 2 in. to 1% in. and a further gain of work accomplished of 2.1 pct when we went from 1 % in. to 1 in. The small ball results reported by H. R. Banks at Chapman Camp are also very convincing. In the case of 2-in. balls they would take the conventional ball path and start cascading.
