EPPELSHEIMER, * Middletown, Ohio.-The housing of employees has so many and so varied aspects that in order to reach even an approximately correct solution it is necessary to have in mind a few fundamental principles; but it is not possible as yet to write these housing principles in the clear and correct form that is possible with many of our natural laws. Manifestly, the problem depends first on the kind of people it is necessary to house. What is suitable for the Southern unattached negro is not suitable for the married skilled American. The influx of colored labor has affected quite a number of what were satisfactorily housed communities. The second important factor is the relative proportion of the number of employees to the total employable population of the community in which the industry is located. The employer of a hundred men in. a large city has little responsibility in the matter of housing his employees. If he employs 75 per cent. of the employable population in a community of 27,000, as is the case of the company with which the writer is connected, it means a large responsibility. In the establishment of an entirely new plant in a more or less isolated place, the responsibility becomes greater. As engineers, we design and write the specifications for the machinery to accomplish a definite purpose, and proceed to house it, provide the necessary buildings with their accessories in the way of cranes, or heating systems, or sprinkling systems, as the case may be. There is no reason why the operating force should not be built up in very much the same way: design the organization, write its specifications so that the employment department can secure the proper men, and then house that organization with just as much thought and care as is given the plant. In the plant, the various machines will work along certain definite lines and accomplish certain results; but even if we start with the proper organization it takes considerable time to get that organization working together. One of the most important elements to this end is the proper housing of the organization. A man usually spends more time at home than at work. Proper surroundings and a comfortable, convenient house of good appearance exercise an influence that cannot be denied, and an employee situated in such surroundings is far more inclined to follow the policies of his employer and take an active part in furthering them

THE demand for clean steel is increasing daily. New processes of refining steel are being developed in order to remove all nonmetallic inclusions as completely as possible, as it is the general opinion that. inclusions affect the dynamic properties of steel and iron to such an extent as to justify great expense for their removal. It is surprising to note at the same time the commercial development of a new process for making artificial wrought iron. By this process slag and steel are thoroughly mixed, the amount of nonmetallic inclusions usually exceeding 2 per cent in weight. The contradiction in these two efforts is obvious and is responsible for the investigation reported in this paper. H. W. Gillett also has recently emphasized the need for further research on wrought iron.1

Owing to the nature of the die-casting process, fresllly cast alloys are undoubtedly not at equilibrium from the standpoint of alloy phase relationships. After casting, therefore, they tend to undergo phase changes, with the ultimate effeet of reaching a state of equilibrium at the aging temperature, beyond which no fnrther change takes place. This phase alteration undoubtedly is one of the primary causes of the changes in dimensions and physical properties that zinc-alloy die castings undergo during aging. It is planned to report on this problem in a series of papers of which this is the first. The writers have made a study of commercial zinc die-casting alloys over a period of several years, utilizing the X-ray diffraction technic of determining the phase composition changes in the alloys. Up to the present, two principal phase changes have been observed which are capable of causing dimensional changes: (I) the segregation of secondary constituents from the zinc-base solid solution and (2) the beta aluminum-zinc decomposition. The latter is the subject of the present paper and studies on the former will be reported upon at a future time. Scope of Study In the present investigation a special technic for the study of the beta phase in zinc-alloy die castings has been developed, making possible the determination of the period of existence of the beta phase after casting. The pure beta constituent and its decomposition have been studied in detail. The effect of magnesium and copper on the velocity of the decomposition is reported. The heat of decomposition, the eutectoid temperature arid the accompanying density change have been measured. The density change lias been calculated from data on crystal structure and the result thus obtained has been compared with the actual change.

EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

Alaska requires an adequate fuel supply for its development, and has large potential coal reserves ranging from lignite to subbituminous and anthracite. Coal production in the Territory now is less than the requirements. In L947, production was 361,000 tons, divided about equally between bituminous coal from the Matanuska field and subbituminous coal from the Nenana field. There is need for development of modern mechanized mines, which should produce the required output with a minimum of workers. These mines should not be thought of in the light of large potential capacity, as in the States. However, these new mines should be developed by modern methods, which should result in lower costs than at Present. Because of the diverse physical conditions in the coal fields, intensive investigation by diamond drilling is necessary to properly plan the development and equipment of mine sites at minimum cost. The Bureau of Mines is doing this now in the Wishbone Hill area of the Matanuska field. All coal land in Alaska is government-owned and subject to the Coal Leasing Act. Coal mining in Alaska has been handicapped by an inadequate supply of dependable workers. Wage scales have been very high in recent years, and "floaters" have been attracted to the coal mines. This type of labor is not conducive to efficient operation. Modernization of mines will require skilled and dependable workers and to induce such men to become interested in coal mining in Alaska, modern facilities, such as modern houses, schools, churches, and recreation halls, must be provided near the mines. Alaska is still a frontier and improvements in living standards must accompany development of mines in order that a stable community may be established. Coal is known to have been mined in Alaska at Port Graham, on Cook Inlet, by the Russians in 1854. During the Klondike gold rush in 1898, coal was mined in scattered areas for use on steamers plying the Yukon River and its navigable tributaries. After the Alaska Railroad was built, two important fields were developed—the Nenana and the Matanuska (Fig 1). The Bering River field was explored by the Guggenheim interests at one time, and a railroad to the area was constructed. However, the field was abandoned because of litigation and reported unsatisfactory physical condition of the beds. There are areas that today are unimportant but which may be developed in the future. Possibly the most important of these is the deposits of subbituminous coal adjacent to Cook Inlet, near Homer, on the Kenai Peninsula (see Fig 1). It is expected that the demand for coal in the Kenai Peninsula will increase because the population in that area has increased as a result of agricultural development. Numerous outcrops of coal are exposed on the peninsula and development of a mine there would obviate dependence on supplies of coal from the Matanuska field. Coal from this field must be shipped approximately 160 miles by rail to Seward and transported thence by boat about 180 miles to Homer. There has been no regular boat service from Anchorage to Homer. There are deposits of coal in the Arctic region but a description of them will not be given in this paper, which will describe the more important deposits in the Alaska Railroad belt. The results of a reconnaissance in the Arctic have been described.' Description of Fields MATANUSKA FIELD The Matanuska field lies in the valleys of the Matanuska River and its tributaries and their separating ridges. This field has been interpreted by geologists as a sunken fault block that separated the Talkeetna Range of mountains from the Chugach Range. The Matanuska River flows west along the south side of the field and the Glenn highway, which extends from Anchorage via Palmer to the Richardson highway near Glen Allan, follows the Matanuska Valley. HIGH subsurface temperatures and pressures are making cementing operations more difficult as deeper producing horizons are being sought. Recorded bottom-hole temperatures above 200°F. and pressures in excess of 12,000 Ib. per sq. in., obtained by combining hydrostatic and pump pressures, are not uncommon. Insufficient time is available for proper placement of standard Portland cement, because of the shortened setting time produced by these excessive temperatures and pressures, therefore special types of cements have been developed to overcome these difficulties. From the standpoint of placement, the ideal slurry would be one that would remain fluid long enough to be placed, then harden rapidly, so that there would be a limited amount of contamination and the well could be placed on production in a minimum of time. It is highly desirable, therefore, that some method be devised to measure accurately the time that any slurry will remain in a fluid state while being pumped into the well. To study the effect of elevated temperature and pressure on fluidity, the authors have developed the pressure-type consistometer (Figs. I and 2) described below, and are presenting data obtained with it, using slurries of both quick-setting and slow-setting cements. Studies were made over a temperature range from 110° to 270°F., and a pressure range from atmospheric to 3000 lb. per sq. inch. APPARATUS The fluidity of cement slurries at atmospheric pressure is usually determined with the Halliburton consistometer1 or the Thickening Time Tester.2 These instruments are similar, in many respects, to an ordinary ice-cream freezer. The slurry to be tested is placed in a container that is rotated at a constant speed with an electric motor. Constant temperature is maintained by surrounding the container with a thermostatically controlled bath. The torque on the paddles, which is proportional to the force needed to shear the slurry, is indicated on a scale. The Halliburton instrument is calibrated from 0 to 100 poises against fluids of known viscosity. To permit direct correlation of observed elevated pressure data with those published at atmospheric pressure, the authors' designs of the slurry container, paddle, and torque indicator closely resemble those used on the Halliburton instrument. Duplicate results may be obtained at atmospheric pressure in either instrument. Instead of the atmospheric constant-temperature bath, one was built from a high-pressure steel bull plug. A Uni-Bolt union equipped with a blanking plug serves as the top, permiting the instrument to be opened or closed in less than one minute. The slurry container is built from Shelby steel tubing. The gas-lift is a comparatively recent development in the Oklahoma and Kansas fields. It was used to some extent in the old Dilworth field several years ago, but the first extensive installations were made in the Tonkawa and Garber fields in Oklahoma early in the year 1926. Compressor Equipment During the early development of the system, the equipment used generally consisted of small tandem compressors of about 250 cu. ft. per min. displacement, driven by automotive-type gas engines, using a short belt drive. These compressors were first installed at the individual wells largely as an experiment. After the experimental installations had proved the method a success, it was considered economically advisable to centralize the compressor equipment in strategically located stations. However, as the information in regard to "gas-lift flowing life" was anything but definite, and the most optimistic estimates in regard to it did not exceed six months, portability of equipment was still the first consideration in the minds of many operators, who continued to install srnall semi-portable com-pressors in their centralized stations. As electric power became available in the fields, the electric motor came rapidly into use as the prime mover for the small compressors. The operating cost of this motor is greater than that of the automotive-type gas engine for the same power output, but the greater continuity of service tends to balance the extra cost. Aside from the semi-portable units, a number of strictly portable compressors were used. These consisted of automotive-type gas engines direct connected to vertical compressors. The unit was assembled on one base and could be mounted on wheels or skids as desired. The chief objection to these, in the writer's opinion, was their small capacity— approximately 150 cu, ft. per min.—which made it necessary to use two, three, and sometimes more units per well, thus making the installation rather costly. However, they have been found valuable for test purposes and emergencies, where installation time is an important factor.

THE fact that this latest and most modern of the Universal Atlas Cement Company's plants at Northampton, Pa., is the fifth to be built on these same properties, and their development has been coincidental with the development of the portland cement industry in the United States, makes it appropriate to sketch briefly the history of the successive steps. In 1889 the original Atlas Portland Cement Co. started its first plant at Coplay, Pa., which is just across the Lehigh River from the present operation. Here the first successful rotary kiln was operated. These kilns were 6 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. long; they used oil for fuel until 1895, when the company developed the first burner for pulverized coal. Shortly thereafter the Atlas company acquired property on the Northampton side of the river and built its plants Nos. 2, 3 and 4 within the following 10 years. During the same period the production of portland cement in the country was increasing rapidly; owing largely to the development of the rotary kiln and improved grinding machinery, which lowered the cost and improved the quality of cement. The general tendency has been to increase the length of the kiln and grind both raw material and finished product finer. In 1930 the Atlas Portland Cement Co. and the Universal Portland Cement Co. united to form the Universal Atlas Cement Co., and the same policy of improving the product has been continued. Because of the large amount of research carried on by manufacturers and consumers, including government agencies, there is a demand for cement of different chemical and physical characteristics for different kinds of structures. Hence many engineers in recent years have been asking for cements of certain definite chemical analyses, which they think are best for their particular jobs. This has compelled the manufacturer to make several different types of cement by variations of chemical composition. These are generally made by adding silica, iron and lime to the standard mixture, which necessarily increases the cost of the product. Therefore the Universal Atlas Cement Co., in planning the modernization of its Northampton plant, gave this particular phase of the problem considerable study. Research and experimentation have developed the practicability of making a wide variety of differently proportioned raw materials for cement by a process of subtraction rather than by addition. With such process, it is possible to discard the undesirable aluminates and silicates from the ample supply of impure limestone available from the company's property rather than by adding high-grade limestone obtained from distant sources. This procedure requires mineral separation by centrifugal sedimentation and froth flotation. IN the classical paper1 of Mehl and Rhines entitled "The Rates of Diffusion in the Alpha Solid Solutions of Copper", the authors state: "It has been mathematically demonstrated that the treatment of the data as though the diffusion were taking place between two flat plates instead of radially in a cylinder has no appreciable effect upon the results. Were the bars of a much smaller diameter, a modification of the analytical treatment would have been required." Unfortunately, the errors in the reported concentrations are much too large to neglect, as shown in the results below. A planar treatment of diffusion data assumes that the reference planes separated by a nominal distance (AX) have identical areas. An adjustment must be made on the concentration data should the successive diffusion planes differ in area. The Mehl-Rhines' diffusion samples were cylindrical with copper electroplated onto copper-based alloys. Successive surface areas through which diffusion occurs are in the ratio ri/r1, where ri is the radial distance between the center of the sample and the center of the i th shell to which the host (alloy) atoms diffuse, and r1 is the radial distance between the center of the sample and the center of the innermost (i = 1) experimentally reported shell from which the alloy atoms diffuse. Hence, ri/r1 (i = 1, ..., n layers) is a dimensionless correction factor to be multiplied by the reported concentration data before planar-data analysis is attempted. In the forty-seven samples reported, the original interface between the copper alloys and the electroplated copper was located at a mean distance of 8.255 mm from the center of the samples. The successive layers, machined off the samples, were approximately 0.0762 mm thick. The distance (xi) at which concentration (ci) was reported was always a distance measured with respect to the original interface, that is, with respect to the fixed distance of 8.255 mm. Hence, the as yet undiscovered Kirkendall Effect was precompensated. The values of ri and r1 are therefore given by ri = 8.255 + xi and Y, = 8.255 + x,. The illustrative table below lists the position xi (mm), ri (mm), the value of ri/r1, the reported concentration (ci) in weight percent (only valid for radial analysis of data), and the corrected concentration [c'i = (ri/r1)ci] in weight percent (only valid for planar analysis of data). Similar tables can be constructed for the remaining forty-six samples. The corrected data can be used to re-evaluate the diffusion coefficients for the reported systems.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-B alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of boron nitride. The activity coefficient of nitrogen increases with increasing boron content in the range 0 to 7 wt pct B. From experimen -tal data, values have been calculated for the B-N interaction parameter e3 at temperatures in the range 1550" to 1750°C. A value of 0.038 has been estimated for the boron self-interaction parameter eg at 1550°C. The standard free energy of decomposition of boron nitride into the elements dissolved in liquid iron has been determined to be: ?F° = 45,900 -21.25T in the range from 1550° to 1750°C. The nitride is assumed to be of composition BN. BORON nitride has an unusual combination of properties which make it appear attractive in a wide range of engineering applications. Some of its more important and most recent applications are in the nuclear area, particularly in connection with the liquid-metal cooled reactor concept now receiving considerable emphasis. Boron nitride has a high degree of stability at elevated temperatures. It also has excellent ma-chinability and the ease with which its crystals deform suggests applications as a lubricant. These properties stem from a hexagonal layer-type structure similar to the structure of graphite. One of its primary uses to date has been for seals in liquid-metal pumping systems. It is also used in nuclear reactors as an insulating layer to separate two solid metals which are not themselves compatible under the conditions of temperature and atmosphere in which they are used. Its inertness to liquid metals has also suggested use as a mold-release agent in casting processes. In addition to its excellent machinability and reported inertness to liquid metals such as iron, silicon, aluminum, copper, and zinc, boron nitride has high thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. This combination of properties would make it appear ideal as a refractory crucible material for refining of high-purity liquid metals, for example high-quality steels. However, since it is known that concentrations of boron as low as 50 ppm can have a marked effect on the physical properties of certain steels,' in particular on the creep and stress-rupture properties, an investigation was undertaken to define accurately the chemical equilibrium among boron, nitrogen, and liquid iron in the range of steelmaking temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two experimental approaches to this problem were employed: a Sieverts' method and a quenching method. In the first method, the Sieverts' technique was used to measure the equilibrium nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-B alloys of 0 to 7 pct B as a function of nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. The solubility limit of the boron nitride phase formed was determined by the point of departure of the nitrogen absorption from Sieverts' Law. This technique has been applied to liquid Fe-Ti alloys by Rao and parlee,' to liquid Fe-A1 alloys by Evans and Pehlke,3 and to solid Fe-V alloys by Fountain and Chipman.4 In the second method a melt of liquid iron was held in a crucible of boron nitride under a known partial pressure of nitrogen gas. After thermodynamic equilibrium was attained, the melt was quenched in a stream of helium and then analyzed by wet-chemical methods for boron and nitrogen. The Sieverts' apparatus used in the first method was essentially of the same design as the one described by Pehlke and Elliott.5 The charge materials were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferro-vac E) supplied by the Crucible Steel Co. and -325 mesh boron powder supplied by Cooper Metallurgical Associates of Cleveland, Ohio. The boron contained less than 0.02 wt pct O, according to supplier's analysis. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to contain the melt. Examination of solidified melts showed these crucibles to be satisfactory with no evidence of any reaction or physical penetration of the crucible wall by the melt. The melt temperature was measured by a disappearing filament-type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diam sight hole in the crucible lid. Germanium single crystals strained in tension at 600°C slip on the {Ill} plane and, macroscopically at least, in the <110> direction. Deformation is in homogeneous: various localized rotations are observed, as is a banding consistent with secondary slip banding. The structure after deformation is polygonized with a domain size of about 2x1O-3 cm. In relaxation tests, an incubation period prior to flow is observed, of duration inversely related to temperature and applied stress. Under continuous loading, there is a sharp first yield point. A critical resolved shear stress therefore must be cited with respect both to temperature and to rate of loading. At 600°C, when loading proceeds at 2900 psi per min, it is 1310 psi. The yield point phenomenon is suggestive of Cottrell&apos;s solute atom atmosphere theory and five points of qualitative agreement with this theory are found. PLASTICITY of germanium at elevated temperatures has been reported by Gallagher,&apos; who ascribed it to slip on {Ill) planes and described some associated effects. Preliminary experiments with single crystals of silicon and germanium loaded as simple beams confirmed {ill) as the slip plane of both materials.V his was demonstrated by the standard technique employing traces on two surfaces of known angle on a deformed crystal of known orientation.3 These experiments did not fix the slip direction, since more than one glide system operated. Uniaxial tensile straining is preferred for this purpose in order to restrict slip to one predominant system and to provide an unequivocal determination of the orientation change with respect to the stress axis. Experimental Method Specimens were diamond-sawed from germanium crystals containing about 5x10-5 wt pct Sb prepared by the zone-leveling process described by Pfann and Olsen;4 these specimens measured about 81/2 in. long, 0.20 in. wide, and were of various thicknesses from 0.035 to 0.060 in. Prior to testing, a specimen was coated over 1 in. or more of length at each end with Apiezon wax, chemically polished (in a solution of 15 ml HF, 25 ml HNO,, 15 ml CH3COOH, and 3 to 4 drops Br2), and dewaxed in warm xylene. A brief re-etching after scribing through a complete wax coating with vernier dividers provided gage marks at 0.200 in. intervals on the polished surface. A specimen with grips soft soldered to the ends was passed through the furnace tube and the grips pinned to the tensile machine in series with a stress gage. The Schopper testing machine is best described by reference to the illustration on p. 107 of Schmid and Boas5 and is operated with the pendulum arm locked, fixing the upper head. Load is applied through the screw-driven lower head, manually or by reduced speed motor. The furnace is 21/2 in. long surrounding a 4x7/16 in. ID quartz tube and was positioned about the specimen to permit free motion. The inert or reducing atmosphere required was sufficiently provided by a flow of helium introduced at the center of the furnace tube, with the tube ends loosely plugged with asbestos paper. Surface corrosion was slight. The stress gage employs a Be-Cu strip with SR-4 units incorporated in a simple bridge network with provision for balancing and calibrating. The bridge output on loading is fed through a Leeds and North-rup dc amplifier to a Speedomax 10 mv recorder, and calibration is obtained by dead loading. Experiments of two types have been conducted. Most have been in relaxation at constant elongation. One stress-strain curve has been taken with the machine continuously driven. Following extension of a specimen, Laue X-ray photographs were taken to obtain the orientation change between deformed and undeformed regions, recorded on a single film by translating the specimen in a plane normal to the beam between exposures. Sequences of such multiple exposures were made on some specimens to include the entire orientation range on one film. Molybdenum was first discovered on the Continental Divide in Colorado in 19 11; and in 1918 two companies, one of which was the Climax Molybdenum 250 stpd operation, were producing. In 1919 both mines were shut down, but in 1924 the Climax mine reopened and has been producing ever since. Over the years mine production has been increased until today the mill capacity is 48,000 stpd (43,500 mtpd). From 1935 to 1973 all ore was mined underground by block caving with scraper slushing. Since 1973 ore production has been supplemented by open pit mining. As demand for molybdenum increased, upper levels of the mine became worked-out and new lower levels were opened. In late 1972 production began on the 600 level with the mined ore being primary and secondary crushed in the new No. 4 crushing station. Ore is hauled to the primary in 10 st (9. 1 mt) capacity Granby side-dump cars. The trains, carrying 200 st (181 mt), pass throug.h a dump block and discharge directly into a 54 in. by 84 in. Traylor TC gyratory crusher set at an 8 in. (203 mm) open side setting. Since the ore has already been broken to a size which will pass the finger raises in the mining areas, there are only rare oversize boulders to block the crusher opening. Selection of the crusher was based more on its capacity than its receiving opening, as is often the case with gyratories used in open pit operations. Nominal and maximum capacities for this unit are 1250 and 1800 stph (1 135 and 1635 mtph). The ore is often wet and sticky, so a mechanical car cleaning device is utilized. Under the crusher is a 300 st (270 mt) ore pocket equipped with a 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inclined conveyor which delivers the ore to a 2,000 st (1800 mt) surge bin. Near the head pulley of this conveyor is a wood picking station whe re tramp wood and steel are put into cars for removal. Two more apron feeders remove the primary crushed ore from the surge bin, and impact belts and conveyor belts transport the ore to the crushing station for screening ahead of two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard crushers. Secondary crushed ore is then conveyed to the surface for tertiary crushing. The entire underground crushing room containing the primary, two secondaries, screens and related equipment is serviced by a 100 st (90 mt) crane with a smaller capacity fast hook. A control room is situated so the operator can observe all the crushing operations. Rotoclone collectors remove dust from the entire operation (including the fumes from the zinc pots) and discharge it to the final product belt. AT the outset, said Mr. Guess, I may say that although I believe the present engineering courses in the various colleges and universities could be arranged to give the student within the same time limit a broader general education of un- doubted value, still I do not agree with the view held by many that engineers in comparison with those of other occupations-let us say doctors, lawyers, bankers, and so-called business men-seldom arrive at high executive positions. After all, we must remember that engineers are not very numerous as compared with the occupations just mentioned and therefore a lesser number reaching high executive positions stated numerically might be a larger number stated as a percentage. We all know there must be throughout the United States say three doctors to one engineer, but I don&apos;t think that even numerically there are as many doctors in high executive positions as engineers, and it is a fortunate thing for the country that doctors as a class are so busily engaged in alleviating sickness and suffering and in the advancement of medical science that they do not aim particularly for high executive positions.

Australian rutile was chlorinated in the presence of CO or carbon. The chlorination velocity in CO was found to be strongly influenced by temperature and proportional to the CO concentration, but independent of the Cl, concentration. In the presence of carbon, the reaction velocity is much higher. The reactivity of the carbon and the distance between the carbon and the rutile surfaces are important variables. The reaction velocity is approximately proportional to the Cl, concentration and independent of the CO concentration of the surrounding atmosphere. Experiments with fluidized-bed chlorination of carbon-rutile mixtures indicate that the motion of the bed has little influence on the reaction velocity. At low temperatures, the chlorination velocity of dense tablets is much greater than that of TiO, coke mixtures suitable for fluidization. The reaction mechanism is discussed. In the industrial production of TiCl, rutile is chlorinated in the presence of carbon. Disregarding intermediate steps, the reaction may be expressed by the following equations: The ultimate object of this study was to find out whether the reaction velocity was higher in fluidized bed operation compared with chlorination of pelle-tized carbon-rutile mixtures. From a literature survey and preliminary experiments it was learned that some basic knowledge about the reaction mechanism was needed for a good experimental design. Therefore the following sets of experiments were carried out: 1) Studies on the reaction velocity in the chlorination of rutile with CO as the only reducing agent. 2) Chlorination of separate rutile-carbon tablets. 3) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets at different temperatures with various kinds of carbon, various grain sizes, and various tablet-making techniques. This series of experiments was carried out not only with pure chlorine but also with mixtures of chlorine with argon, CO and CO,. 4) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets made in a strictly standardized manner. 5) Chlorination of static-bed rutile-carbon mixtures. 6) Fluidized-bed chlorination of the same mixture. The experiments 4 to 6 formed the final and direct test of the main question: Static bed vs fluidized bedo. Although there are many patents and papers dealing with the general aspects of chlorination, only few experiments from which detailed information can be obtained have been reported in the literature. Pamfilov and coworkersl3 have studied chlorination of TiO, with CO or carbon as the reducing agent. They found that the weight decrease per hour at 600o to 800°C amounted to 11 to 14 pct with CO and 45 to 51 pct with carbon. They suggest that phosgene might be an intermediate in the chlorination of TiO,. Takimoto and Hattori have chlorinated reduced titanium oxide (TiO) and found a very high rate of TiC1, -production. They proved that the composition of the gas from the chlorination of rutile-carbon mixtures contained mainly CO. They reported for instance 74.7 pct CO, and 5.6 pct CO at 800°C at which temperature the Boudouard equilibrium composition is 12 pct CO and 88 pct CO. Seligman and Segerchano6 have studied the chlorination of TiO. They proved that Ti0 and chlorine react rather rapidly at temperatures as low as 300°C. Above 400°C, the reaction was complete. At 500°C the velocity of this reaction was much higher than was chlorination of TiO, + C. McTaggart,7 Nishimura, et al. and Wilskam have chlorinated mixtures of carbon and various kinds of rutile or beneficated ilmenite. Nishimura, et al. also report the results from reduction of TiO, with H2, CO, or carbon. At 900°C only 1 pct Ti O is formed in 2 hrs. At 1100°C 23.1 pct Ti, 0, was formed if elementary carbon was present. No carbide formation occurred below 1400°C. McIntosh and Cofferll have observed that the CO, content of the exit gases from chlorination of rutile and calcined petroleum coke is appreciably higher than found in the Boudouard equilibrium. At 900°C the ratio (CO, /CO + CO) is about 80 pct, whereas the equilibrium value is about 2 pct. W. E. Dunn12 has studied the chlorination rates of several TiO,-bearing minerals with CO + Cl, or COCl . Chlorinations were carried out either in a fluidized reactor or a fixed-bed reactor, both having a 30-mm diameter. The results obtained in both reactors were comparable. It was proved that benefi-ciated ilmenite (i.e., ilmenite from which the iron oxide had been removed by chlorination) was chlorinated 10 times faster thanrutile. In shaft sinking for cod mines, the cost item greatly influences the method adopted. This holds true especially when soft material must be traversed. The average life of a coal mine is short. This is due either to the limited area of the coal basin or to the great expense of maintenance and haulage underground when the entries are extended a considerable distance from the hoisting shaft. Therefore, the engineer in opening a coal mine is confronted with the fact that the cost must be kept within certain bounds else the venture will prove unprofitable. For this reason he may be prohibited from adopting certain safe, but expensive, methods that are used in sinking caissons for foundations, driving transportation tunnels, or other work of permanent construction. A common method of sinking through difficult ground employs the aid of a steel shoe pushed ahead of the shaft timbers. Another is the drop-shaft method. These two methods were used in sinking the main shaft and the air shaft of the Eagle No. 3 mine, at Des Moines, Ia., and the following data show the relative success and cost of the two methods of sinking under the same conditions. The low-temperature carbonization of coal involves the carrying out of the coking process under conditions wherein neither the coal mass nor any of the passageways through which the volatile products pass are heated above 700" or 800" C. For convenience in this discussion, the single number 750" will be used to designate the maximum range. This temperature is not selected arbitrarily; it is the result of certain natural conditions that are inherent in the substances involved. Two of these conditions arc sufficiently pronounced to suggest a line of demarcation at this point as follows: (1) Below 750°, all the heavy hydrocarbons are expelled, which means that, at these lower temperatures, the illuminants, the gases of high calorific value, and the condensible oils are discharged; above 750") there are given off the lean, non-illuminating gases consisting for the most part of hydrogen and marsh gas and having no condensible constituents present. (2) Below 750") there is substantially no secondary decomposition; above 750") the volatile products are readily decomposed, forming tars, naphthalene, free carbon, etc. It is not intended to maintain that no secondary decompositions occur below 750". Many recent studies have demonstrated the practicability, especially in the presence of catalytic substances, of cracking certain of the hydrocarbon compounds; but at these lower temperatures the step is a moderate one, as, for- example, from xylene to toluene or from toluene to an anthracene. These changes are moderate in amount. Not only do the reactions proceed slowly but they are subjected to the decomposing . conditions for only a short time. This is evident when it is recalled that at these initial temperatures the decomposition of the coal is very rapid and, if anywhere near a neutral pressure is maintained, the movement of the evolved gases is lively and reduces, correspondingly, the time for the retention of the gases in the passageways where these milder decomposing conditions exist. It is acknowledged that the maintenance of these temperature conditions at the present time has only an ideal and not a practical status.
