A review is given of the principles on which recently proposed methods of electric log interpretation in shaly sands are based and of the evidence brought up in support of the theoretical derivations. It is. pointed out that the qualitative techniques suggested to date have a tendency to be too pessimistic in the prediction of the presence of commercial hydrocarbon accumulations. In the quantitative treatment, a new concept is introduced, namely that of strongly reduced activity of the double layer counter ions which are present near the negatively charged rock surfaces. This lemmu when applied to the calculation of the equilibrium concentratiotls of interstitial waters yields a set of very simple relations. The resulting expressions for electrochemical potentials across rock samples appear in satisfactory agreement with laboratory experiments. The formulae obtained for the electrical conductivity of shaly formatioris are of the same form as those arrived at empirirally by previous workers. Combination of the expres.riorls for potentia1s and conductivities gives a direct proof of the Tixier relation which states that for shaly water sands the product of apparent formation water resistivity and apparent formation factor equals the resistivity of the sand 100 per cent .saturated with formalion water and which was verified by the work of Wyllie and Perkins and their co-workers. The relations for the resistivities and spontaneous porer11inI.s have been extended to the case of hydrocarbon hearing shaly formations, thus laying a formal basis for the quantitative interpretation of electric logs in shaly oil sands. INTRODUCTION The presence of disseminated clays in porous rocks saturated with electrolytic solutions has a strong influence on the transference of ions taking place under electrical or chemical potential gradients. Both the electrochemical emf's in evidence on the SP curves of electric logs and the electrical conductivity measured on resistivity logs arc directly dependent on the ionic transference in the interstitial waters of the formations traversed by boreholes. A large number of researches have been carried out on the nature and magnitude of the effects of clays on ionic transference. The most recent of these have been described in papers by McCardell and Winsauer,1 2 Wyllie and Southwick,3 poupon, Loy, and Tixier,4 and by Perkins et al.5 Most of these authors consider the effects of the clays as due to the fixed negative charges on the clay lattice. These charges cause the formation of diffuse surface layers with a high concentration of positive ions. The internal solution of the shaly reservoir rock has therefore a different ionic composition and concentration than the electrolyte with which it is in equilibrium (connate water produced from the formation or mud filtrate by which the formation is invaded). To calculate the equilibrium concentration of the internal solution, use is made of the Donnan6 relation, which states that the mean ionic activities of the internal solution and of the external electrolyte must be equal. INTRODUCTION Control of borehole direction during drilling can be difficult and costly. Unintentional crooked holes are often lrilleti in dipping formations and many times directional drilling is required when the surface location is not directly above the target area —- for example, at offshore and mountainous locations. Prilllng progress can be greatly hindered in either air or liquid drilling when it be comes necessary to use low bit weight to prevent excessive hole angle build-up. If hole inclination becomes too great, drill pipe drag becomes excessive and fishing risks are increased, logging is more difficult and problems of differential sticking, key seating and fatigue failures may be encountered. Dog-legs and key seats are more serious problems than steep inclination angles: therefore, reducing rate of direction change is preferred to attempting to maintain absolutely vertical holes. Consequently, a straight inclineti hole is preferable to a nearly vertical crooked hole containing numerous dog-legs. In this paper, theories of the cause of hole deviation and analyses of drill string behavior under down-hole conclitions are summarized. IIEVIEU' OF PREVIOUS WORK ON HOIaE DEVIATION Significant progress in the theoretical analysis of hole deviation problems has been made in the past 1 5 years. The pioneering work has been primarily a result of the efforts of Lubinski and Woods.l-5 In 1950, Lubinski 1 considered the buckling of a drill string in a straig:rt vertical hole, a problem also considered by Willers6 in 1941. It wns concluded that very low bit weights must be used to prevent hole deviation resulting from drill collar buckling. The use of conventional stabilizers was proposed2 in 1951 by Mac Donald and Lubinski as a method for permitting greater Sit weights to he carried without drill collar buckling. These authors pointed out that a 2° nearly vertical spiral hole can cause severe key seatinp, and drill pine near, wilereas n 3 straight inclined hole with deviation all in one direction, while not vertical, will not result in serious drillirig or producing problems. Studies were continued with an investigation of straight inclined holes by Lubinski and Woods3 in 1953. In this paper they concluded that perfectlv vertical holes cannot be drilled even in isotropic forriations unless extremely low bit P-eights are used. .l'l~ey postulated that constant drilling conditions produce holes of constant inclination angle and varying conditions cause the hole to drill at a neiv equilibrium angle. This analysis was not concerned with drill string buckling since it was based on an equilibrium solution in which the ~irill string Was presumed to lie along the lower side of the hole abcrve the point of tangency. THE mining engineer is being more generally called on to examine and report on properties where the introduction of mechanical loaders is proposed, and as the use of these labor-saving devices presents an entirely different problem from that of hand-loading, an outline of procedure is herewith pre¬sented based on five years of intensive field experience in making such studies. It is impossible to outline an examination which will cover every condition but the most important variables are noted and the re¬port may be amplified or abridged to suit individual mine requirements. There are, of course, exceptional cases in which a single minor variable will determine the final conclusion; the result of mechanical loader application can be, estimated within close limits by considering all variables listed and taking into account the sum of all those found to be applicable to the property under examination. It is necessary that a high degree of accuracy be exercised in the analysis of conditions, and that a relatively narrow margin be figured on all estimates of tonnage outputs and costs. In making an examination for this purpose the data as to company name, business address, name of mine, geographical location, rail or water connections, type of mine (whether shaft, slope, or drift), and the name of seam should, of course, be included, to be followed by the minimum, maximum, and average thickness of seam, a brief description of the charac¬teristics of the coal, the impurities contained, location of regular impurities or partings, together with nota¬tion as to quality, uses, and-markets for the coal. It is also necessary to make cross-sections of the seam so that face preparation may be studied in an effort to eliminate all regularly-occurring impurities at the working place. The possibilities for further cost re¬ductions by the removal and gobbling of partings under¬ground before mechanically ? loading out a face are sufficiently great to warrant careful study and analysis. The classification of the mine from the standpoint of gaseous or non-gaseous operation will determine the general type of electrical equipment needed. A notation regarding the power whether generated at the mine or purchased, together with the amount, voltage, and type of current available is necessary since these matters determine the exact type of elec¬trical equipment to be used. A brief description of the ventilating system, giving type of fan, amount. of air delivered, water gage, and whether force or ex¬haust type, will enable the engineer' to figure venti¬lating requirements per man under mechanical loading practices. The pitch of seam in degrees, the pitch of working faces, and a brief description of rolls or horsebacks should be included, as these affect the efficiency of mechanical loading and, therefore, the economic re¬sults obtainable. -Notations should be made as to the amount of water found in working faces, and whether pumping, sprinkling or rock-dusting methods should be considered. As the character of the floor affects the operation of the machine at the face if a cater¬pillar-tread type, its hardness should be determined, and also whether impurities consisting of floor ma¬terial are likely to be loaded with the coal. The char¬acter of the roof and overlying stratification determine the mining system and width of roof span at work¬ing faces. It therefore directly regulates the amount of tonnage to be loaded by machines without a move from one place to another.

D. B. DOWLING,* Ottawa, Ont.-I do not propose to start any argument, but really there is a comeback to what Mr. Coste says.1 Geography is probably not geology, but geology is geography. You cannot regard structure as geography on the surface, but it is geology as soon as you get under the surface. In Canada, it is quite true that they went too close to the Rocky Mountains. When boring in the foothills, as Mr. Coste says, they were too close to the mountains where they got into a faulted area, and if there had been storage, it probably would have lost a good deal of the oil. The situation in the Calgary field is one that might be interpreted in many ways, but in front f the foothills there is a very deep syncline. The gas and oil that is recovered on the edge of the, foothills is of such a nature that we must assume that it is not the pure crude oil. It seems to be somewhat refined, or a condensation product. The solution, or at least the argument that appeals to me, is that as the deeper part of that basin is, say, 6000 ft. below sea level, there must have been some breaking up of the oil on account of pressure and of the heat, and we are getting gas, traveling up toward the surface in the foothills; and as it comes up, it probably condenses again, and is caught in folds on the edge of the syncline so that we have a natural condensing machine there. The oil is not found on the eastern side of the folds, it is found on the western side. On the eastern side and on the summit there is a little light oil, gasoline, we will say, blowing into the well once in a while; now that looks like a natural condensation of the gas and a storage behind the summit.

New expressions in the technical assessment of mineral concentration processes have been defined as Concentration Efficiency: Concentration Index: where h is the percentage of head grade; c, percentage of concentrate grade; maximum percentage of concentrate grade obtainable at 100 pct recovery; and R, percentage of recovery. In developing these expressions, the basic requirements for the technical assessment of concentration operations have been defined and the various expressions suggested by others for asses-sing the results of such operations reviewed and criticized. The derived expression for E, depends on a simple combination of recovery (R) and a new term selectivity (s), where S is (c-h)/(c,,, -h), by definition. Limitations of the new expressions are discussed and examples given of applications to concentration operations. It is also shown that the formulae for E, and I, can be applied to scatter diagrams, multi-component systems, size-assay analyses, and classification data. Many methods of quantifying concentrating operations have been proposed. These include direct presentation of weights and assays together with the derived data for other items such as ratio of concentration, recovery, rejection losses, and enrichment ratio. These terms are now accepted mineral dressing nomenclature, and in the assessment of the results of concentration processes, concentrate grade and recovery are together the most widely accepted measures of concentration efficiency. For practical purposes when the concentrate grade is equal to or greater than a predetermined acceptable value, test or operation results may be assessed by the recovery figures alone. Similarly when recovery is within specification, the operation can be assessed by concentrate grade. The ultimate assessment and selection of a concentration operation is—admittedly with a few ex-ceptions—a matter of economics. There is however an intermediate stage in laboratory and pilot plant testing when evaluations must be made without the assistance of an economic yardstick. Numerous techniques are employed to facilitate such evaluations among which may be mentioned graphical plots of grade vs recovery, cumulative weight vs cumulative recovery, scatter diagrams, etc. The desirability of combining metallurgical results and product weights and assays into a single value has been recognized and discussed by many workers1-" with the resultant suggestion and use of such terms as Metallurgical Efficiency ,' Summation Index,' Selectivity Index,'- and Absolute Efficiency B None of these expressions completely satisfies all the requirements of a selectivity or efficiency formula and it is proposed in this report to define the terms, relating to the technical efficiency of a concentrating operation, concentration index and concentration efficiency. Examples are given of their application and a comparison is made of their use in relation to other formulae. All product grades in this paper will be referred to in terms of mineral percentages and a list of symbols is given in Table I. WHEN the Board of Directors of the Institute in June 1931 approved the formation of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite and its then membership of eleven, little did any of those concerned envision that twelve years later the annual Committee luncheon would attract 34, and the technical session, jointly with the Iron and Steel Division, more than 70. Yet that was exactly what happened during the February meeting just passed. And what is more important, some members of the Committee are now predicting that by 1944 over 10 per cent of the iron ore produced in the United States will come from these Eastern Magnetite properties. Chairman Crockett, in opening the meeting, advised that due to the serious illness of Meredith E. Johnson, State Geologist of New Jersey, Mr. Johnson would be unable to brief his scheduled paper, which would therefore be reserved for a later date.

The Climax Molybdenum Company' s newest operation is the Henderson project, which is located on the east side of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are estimated at more than 300 million tons at a grade of 0.49% MoS2. For mining the ore a modified panel caving system is used. The ore is transported to the Henderson mill on the west side of the Continental Divide on a 42 in. (1.07 m) gauge railroad through 9.6 miles (15.4 km) of tunnel and 4. 8 miles (7.7 km) of surface track, a total distance of 14.4 miles (23. 2 km). Each train consists of 30 ore cars with capacity of 22 st (20 mt) of ore or 660 st (599 mt) per train. The unmanned trains operate completely automatically. At the 54 in. by 84 in. primary gyratory crusher, the bottom dump ore cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge at a maximum rate of 100 st (91 mt) per minute. Dumped ore falls onto a rock box before passing over a 17 ft long by 46 ft wide (5. 2 m by 14 m) grizzly set at a 40° angle with bar spacings of 7 ½ and 8 ½ in. (191 mm and 216 mm) openings. An estimated 30 to 50% of the ore (which at times is wet and sticky) passes through the grizzly. The operators report that a shallower angle on the grizzly, perhaps 35º to 37º, would have been sufficient and would have prevented impact on the back of the crusher pocket by large boulders. This pocket as well as the crushed ore pocket under the crusher is lined with AR plate. The accompanying drawings show a "future splitter" and the operators are planning the installation of this unit to prevent impact and subsequent damage to the crusher spider. Crushed ore at an 8 to 9 in. (203 mm to 229 mm) size joins the grizzly undersize in the pocket beneath the crusher. This pocket is sized at 660 live st (599 mt) so that it will accept an entire trainload of ore. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a four-speed, 84 in. (2. 1 m) apron feeder operating at 9.6 to 29. 3 fpm (2.9 to 8.9 mpm). A 60 in. (1.5 m) takeaway conveyor operating at 480 fpm (146 mpm) delivers the crushed ore to a 58,000 st live and 193,000 st total (52,600 and 175, 100 mt) open stockpile under an A -frame supported tripper gallery. Impact idlers on the takeaway conveyor under the apron feeder discharge are mounted on wood blocks for a cushioning effect and ripped belt detecting bars are located behind each impact idler. The conveyor tunnel is of corrugated and galvanized steel construction rather than concrete. The concrete crusher enclosure is circular in design from its lowest level at elevation minus 110 ft 4 in. The Southwest Virginia Improvement Company began operations in the Bluestone Flat-Top coal-field, situated in Tazewell County, Virginia, in the fall of 1881. In May, 1883, the company had built 200 coke-ovens, and by March, 188-1, had 9000 feet of entries, exclusive of air-ways, in the Nelson or Rig coal-bed of this district (which here averages eleven feet in thickness), and had extracted 200,000 tons of coal, representing an area of about twenty acres. About this opening has grown the recently incorporated city of Pocahontas, and the completion of the New River branch of the Norfolk and Western Railroad to this point enabled the company to make large contracts for supplying coal and coke, so that it was deemed necessary, on account of the limited area developed, to work the mine day and night to fill orders. At 1.30 Thursday morning, March 13th, the inhabitants of Pocahontas were awakened by a violent shock, and within a few minutes all knew that the East mine had been the scene of an explosion of so general a nature that, of the 114 men at work, not one had escaped. The daily papers gave more or less distorted accounts of the number of victims, the scenes in and about, the mine, and the probable cause of the disaster. At the request of the company, the President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers appointed the undersigned a committee of three to investigate the matter, and the committee thus constituted presents the following report, accompanied by a copy of the testimony taken daring the investigation, for preservation in the archives of the Institute. Pocahontas was reached on Thursday, April 24th, and left on Friday, May 2d. During this interval the committee made repeated visits to the mine, especially to the points, of most importance, examining it carefully in every part; and summoned a number of witnesses, twenty-six of whom appeared and testified. The length of the collector is found to influence the flotation of the mineral even at incipient conditions, which are below the concentration at which interaction at the solid-liquid interface begins to take place to form hemi-micelles. To study this dependence, concentration for incipient flotation of quartz was determined as a function of pH with collectors of various chain lengths. The observed effect of chain length on flotation is ascribed to that of collector adsorbed on the bubble surface. In previous studies, it was shown that at low concentrations the alkyl collector ions adsorb at the solid-liquid interface as individuals.''2 At higher concentrations, the collector ions adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface associate with each other to form two-dimensional aggregates called hemi-micelles. Above the hemi-micelle concentration, the length of the hydrocarbon chain is extremely important since the hydrocarbons are in effect removed from water during the association, making the energetic conditions more favorable for adsorption at the interface. Because of this enhanced adsorption, one observes a very rapid increase in flotation associated with the hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. However, a dependence of flotation on the chain length at concentrations below that required for hemi-micelle association was also observed,' and this cannot be explained by the above mechanism which postulated hydrocarbon chain interactions only at the solid-liquid interface. This prompted an investigation into other possible reactions of the hydrocarbon chains and an examination of the conditions at the bubble surface involved in the flotation system and how these observations might explain the reactions at the solid-gas interface which cause the particle-bubble attachment required for flotation. To obtain more information on chain length effects, flotation, under incipient conditions, was tested by vacuum flotation techniques. The collector-concen-tration-pH relationships for flotation of quartz with alkyl ammonium acetate collectors was delineated by observing the pH at which quartz particles begin to float to the liquid surface. By investigating flotation as a function of pH, it was also possible to study the effect of neutral molecules on incipient flotation conditions, since the aminium ions hydrolyze to amine molecules at higher pH values. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Brazilian quartz specimens were crushed and sized, and the 270 x 400 mesh fraction was used for flotation studies. The samples were leached with concentrated hydrochloric acid until no coloration of the acid occurred. The leached material was washed free of chloride ions and stored in distilled water. The vacuum flotation technique developed by Schuhmann and prakash3 was used to determine the critical pH-concentration curves. This method, which can be used to delineate conditions for incipient flotation, is fairly simple and rapid. About 0.5 gm of 270 x 400 mesh quartz was placed in a 100 ml graduated cylinder which was then filled to the 100 ml mark with the collector solution made from high-purity alkyl ammonium acetate salts. The water used for the test was conductivity water saturated with air that had been passed through a cleansing train consisting of Drierite, Ascarite, a water wash bottle, and a trap. After the pH was adjusted, the cylinder was then conditioned for thirty minutes. In the tests where an acid pH was desired, sufficient acid was added before the collector solution to avoid any effect due to slow desorption of collector from the quartz surface. After conditioning, vacuum was applied to the system and the flotation or nonflotation of the quartz was noted. The pH at which the quartz particles began to float to the liquid-gas interface was taken as the critical PH. Critical pH curves were thus determined for different concentrations of the various collectors. Hallimond tube flotation data were taken from the authors' previous publication1 for correlation with that from the vacuum flotation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of vacuum flotation studies for determining critical pH-concentration curves, i.e., curves which delineate conditions for incipient flotation, are shown in Fig. I. IN 1948, the United States used nearly six million barrels of petroleum products every day. Although substitution of synthetic fuels for the natural petroleum product is not here yet, large quantities of special-purpose coal will be required in ever-increasing volume as the domestic production of oil from other sources fails to meet demand and the production of synthetic fuels begins. Petroleum economists do not agree as to when the shortages of domestic oil will appear; but the increasing per capita consumption of oil, coupled with a constantly growing population drawing on a potential domestic oil supply estimated to be 85 billion barrels, sooner or later will result in demand exceeding domestic supply. When this situation comes about, the excess demand will be either eliminated by curtailment of consumption or the demand met by increasing importation of foreign oil or by the production of synthetic fuels. The first recourse would definitely retard the heretofore unbroken rise in American living standards, while dependence upon a foreign oil supply during a war or other emergency would be dangerous. On the other hand, the enormous coal reserves in the United States, plus sizable deposits of oil shale, indicate adequate means of augmenting a diminishing domestic oil supply. Some idea of the impact of an expanding synthetic liquid fuels program on the coal-mining industry may be gathered when it is considered that to supply just half of our present-day petroleum needs synthetically from coal would increase the coal output by about 500 million tons annually, using an 11,900 Btu bituminous coal as the plant feed. If either a subbituminous coal or lignite were used, the quantity required would be materially increased. Synthetic Fuel Processes: The principal synthetic fuel processes using coal as a raw material are the Bergius, or coal-hydrogenation process, and the Fischer-Tropsch, or gas-synthesis process. These two processes not only produce different end products, but the preparation of the coal used in each presents its own individual problem to the coal-preparation engineer. The hydrogenation process brings together a mixture of dry, finely powdered coal, catalyst, and heavy oil to form a paste. Addition of hydrogen under rather high pressure and temperature conditions brings about transformation of the coal to a liquid product, from which a high-grade gasoline and other motor fuels may be obtained. The Fischer-Tropsch process requires the production of synthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. At the Bureau of Mines Louisiana, Mo., demonstration plant, this gas is being made by reacting dried pulverized coal with carefully controlled volumes of oxygen and superheated steam. After purification and in the presence of the proper catalyst and suitable conditions of pressure and temperature, the hydrogen and carbon monoxide components of the synthesis gas react to form motor fuel. Williams numbers his acquaintances in the mineral industries by the thousands and h because his principal hobby is liking human beings, most of his acquaintancs are also his friends. Clyde is one of the many outstanding metallurgist, in the United States who started as a chemist. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1915 he was successively chemist for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co., and at the Bureau of Mines station at Ithaca, N.Y. The terms "cable bolting," "extended ground support," and "grouted cable" are synonymous, and they have been popping up with much more regularity in the mining engineer s vocabulary. In simplest terms, lengths of u itensioned cable up to 18.3 m (60 ft) are grouted in drill holes prior to mining. This permits radical departures from mining practices that rely on conventional rock reinforcement. For example, by placing a pattern of cable bolts in the back of an open stope, ore can be mined in successive slices. After each slice is taken the protruding cable; are simply cut off and mining proceeds. When about 4.6 m (15 ft) of reinforced back remains, a crew places a new par tern of cable bolts in the ore.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerksdorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7988 acres or 12.5 sq miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26-ft diam down-cast shaft and a 22 ft-diam up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month. To exploit the Eastern zone of the property and assist in increasing production to 200,000 tons milled per month, it was decided to sink a further Twin Shaft System consisting of a 28-ft diam downcast shaft and a ventilation up-cast shaft -22-ft in diam, both monolithic concrete lined — 200 ft apart and 5300 ft deep. This paper deals with the sinking and commissioning of these Eastern Twin Shafts. This was achieved by one sinking crew within a period of 20 months. A) PLANNING 1) Siting: The Eastern Shaft System was sited in the north-east area of the property, 12,000 ft east on strike from the Pioneer System. (Fig. 1). Initially the system was sunk to the 5300 ft elevation to conform with the original Pioneer Shaft System. On completion a sub-vertical main shaft will be sunk to the 8000 ft elevation in the immediate vicinity, and subsequently the surface ventilation shaft will be deepened to this elevation by raising from level to level and sliping to full size. The exact positions of the shafts were chosen after: a) underground development had located certain known water bearing zones, and b) geophysical and topographical surveys had been carried out. The shafts passed through the following geological succession: Surface to 4430 ft - Dolomites of the Transvaal System 4430 to 4470 ft - Quartzites and conglomerates of the Black Reef Series of the Transvaal System. 4470 to 4470 ft - Diabasic Lava of the Venters-dorp System (Ventersdorp Contact Reef at base). 4470 to 5250 ft - Quartzites of the Elsburg Series of the Upper Witwaters-rand System. The shafts were sited to ensure that the least possible water would be encountered during sinking, and this contributed to the rapid rate of sinking. 2) Duties: a) The 22-ft diam ventilation shaft was designed to up-cast 1,400,000 cfm of air (0.060 density) against a resistance of 22 in. water gauge. b) The main shaft was designed to handle 160,000 tons hoisted per month as well as the men, material and down-cast ventilation to serve this tonnage. The 284 diam main shaft is equipped with streamlined buntons spaced at 15 ft centers set in pockets which were left during sinking. There are six compartments, four of which are sewed by two dual purpose hoists, hoisting either, twedeck man cages or 13-ton bottom discharge skips. The other two compartments are served by a single purpose winder hoisting double deck cages accommodating 60 men per deck. (Fig. 2). 3) Timing: Permanent equipment was ordered well in advance to insure continuity in the operation. Development underground reached the shaft positions before the start of sinking operations. From this development, boreholes were drilled into shaft positions to drain off water in the vicinity of the shafts. To ensure complete co-ordination of effort, all relevant data, as well as the allocation of responsibility, were made known to all persons and departments concerned. 4) Models: The extensive use of scale models during the preliminary planning stages proved most useful in deciding on design such as buntons, bunton pockets and guide cleats, and complex layouts concerning loading, spillage and pumping arrangements. Some cases of the motion of two miscible fluids in uniform linear models are discussed. There is no bulk flow through the models, and the convection currents are caused solely by density gradients. Horizontal, vertical and inclined positions of the models are treated separately. Analytical formulas for the motion of a narrow transition zone between the fluids are obtained and compared with measurements, and the limitations are discussed. Observations of the ultimate stabilizing effect of diffusion on the motion me compared with the theory. It is shown that fluid motion in an inclined model with a constant rate of bulk flow can be directly deduced from the cases discussed, provided the viscosity ratio is small. INTRODUCTION In some reservoirs, convection currents caused by variations in the fluid densities may be significant. For practical purposes it may be desirable either to minimize the effect, particularly in miscible displacement, or to maximize the effect as in some schemes for the production of heavy crude oils by combustion. Experiments by Craig, et al,l have shown the effectiveness of gravity in reducing the efficiency of a miscible displacement when the mixed zone between the displacing and displaced fluids is narrow compared with the height of the system. The presence of a board transition zone from one fluid to the other has been shown by Perkins, et al,2 to nullify considerably the influence of a difference in density. Indeed, the theoretical discussion given by Perrine3 has shown that when the transition zone exceeds a certain critical length the efficiency approaches 100 per cent. Many additional results 495 have been published on miscible and immiscible displacements which show the importance of density difference and also mobility ratio. The aim of the present paper is to discuss some cases of gravity segregation of miscible fluids in linear models such as are often used in the laboratory to evaluate recovery processes, and to supply additional experimental evidence in support of the conclusions. An attempt is made to calculate simply the magnitude of the fluid motion caused by density pdients and mobility ratios, and to quantify the modifications in the fluid motion produced by the combined effect of molecular and convective dispersion. However, it should be pointed out that the uniform permeability of the models and the use of only a single pair of fluids (whereas several pairs of fluids may be employed in a recovery scheme) severely restricts direct conclusions about natural reservoirs. For conciseness, the motion generated by density gradients is emphasized for the case of no bulk flow through the models. This is not a drastic limitation because, as shown in Appendix A, a fluid motion with a constant bulk flow through any linear model is equivalent to a fluid motion with no bulk flow in the same model inclined at a different angle to the horizontal, provided only that the density is a linear function of the viscosity of the fluid mixture. HORIZONTAL MODEL In this case the model is assumed to have a rectangular cross-section with a horizontal breadth b, vertical height and a great length L. Throughout.the paper it will be assumed that x-axis points along the length, the y-axis along the width and the z-axis along the height. Thus, in the present case the x, y plane is horizontal. Initially, the transition zone between the fluids is assumed to be thin and parallel to the y, z plane. An example of this situation in a practical problem arises in a scheme for using air for cushion gas in the storage of fuel gas in aquifers. 6 With the passage of time the denser fluid sinks and spreads along the bottom of the model while the lighter fluid rises. The interface extends from the top plane of the model to the bottom. Experiments have shown that for practical purposes this interface may be treated as a plane surface at all times. The surface is significantly curved, however, for viscosity ratios greater than about 10. Other complications arise with large viscosity ratios because of the nonlinear dependence of the viscosity on the composition of the mixture, so that the simple results given here are restricted to fairly low viscosity ratios.

FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

THE Nicola Valley coal-field is small, but it seems likely to become important because of its commanding position in a rich region that is developing rapidly. Bituminous coking coal in workable quantity has not been found at any other point between the Crow's Nest Pass region, about 400 miles to the east, and Vancouver island, 250 miles westward. The Canadian Pacific railway reached the Nicola valley two years ago; two other lines, the Canadian Northern and the Great Northern, are building towards the valley. The vast region between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific coast, extending northward for several hundred miles from the international boundary, which has been the scene of extensive mining- and smelting-operations for many years, is filling up with settlers, who are attracted by the wealth of minerals and timber, the rich soil of the valleys, and the fine climate. The Nicola river, flowing westward through the valley of that name in the Yale district, discharges into the Thompson river, which is the eastern branch of the Fraser. The transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific railway crosses the mouth of the Nicola river at Spence's bridge, 178 miles from Vancouver. From Spence's bridge the Nicola branch line ascends the valley for 40 miles to Merritt, the coal-center, and continues 7 miles farther to the town of Nicola. Thus the haul from the mines at an elevation of 2,000 ft, to saltwater is 218 miles down river grades. The Nicola branch will be continued about 150 miles farther eastward to Penticton, where it will connect with an extension of the line through the rich Kootenay and Boundary districts.
