The coal-fields of the United States have been variously classified as to their geographical positions. In 1887 I proposed slight changes to the classification generally used, for more convenient description of our coal-fields in my report on the statistical history of coal in the States during 1886 for the United States Geological Survey. This new classification seems to meet all practical requirements and has been generally adopted. The coal-areas are grouped in two divisions—the anthracite division and the bituminous division. In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials; it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted.

One of the most important requirements to be met by any coal producer is delivery of size consists tailored to specific applications. Generally these specifications include a minimum as well as a maximum size limit. The customers of a major Indiana coal producer noticed that some shipments of sized coal contained a large proportion of undersize pieces. Also, in these shipments, the pieces which remained within the specified limits were cracked and, when handled, crumbled readily. The producer, certain that these shipments had been properly sized at the tipple, suspected that degradation had occurred in transit. The Indiana Geological Survey was requested to examine the coal from one of these shipments to attempt to determine the cause of breakage. Two basic facts about coal and coal seams led to the employment of petrographic techniques in this investigation. First, all coal seams consist of accumulations of diverse organic and inorganic constituents; and second, most coal breakage, either desirable or undesirable, can be attributed to the inherent weakness of some of these constituents or to poor adhesion between certain constituents. Analyses of degraded coal Sampling: Samples were secured from 2 stock piles of 2-by 4-inch coal in a dealer's yard. The coal in both piles had received the same treatment from mining to storage, although it had been mined and shipped on two different days. The size consist of one pile, however, appeared smaller than that of the other. The sample from the degraded pile is referred to as the slack sample, and the other is called the unslack sample. Size analyses: In order to determine the actual size consist, the samples were screened, with a minimum of rough handling, on square 2-inch, 1-inch, 1/2-inch, and 12-mesh screens. It is assumed that 100 percent of the 2-by 4-inch coal is retained on a 2-inch round screen at the tipple. Analyses of several loads at the tipple indicate that approximately 26 percent of the 2- by 4-inch coal, 100 percent of which was assumed held on a 2-inch round screen, passed through a 2-inch square screen. Twenty-six percent may be taken as the normal difference between round and square screens. Results of the analyses of stockpile coal are shown in Table 1. Cumulative percent versus size are plotted on a Rosin-Rammler chart as Figure 1. Both samples approximately follow normal size distribution; this indicates that breakage is not size preferential and also that the samples are representative of the stockpiles. Although both samples exhibit the same general size distribution, the median size of the slack sample is considerably smaller than that of the unslack sample. Fifty-five percent of the unslack sample was undersize (29 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference), and 83 percent of the slack sample was undersize (57 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference). Both piles contained a greater percentage than normal of undersize coal; this indicates that they were both affected by degradation, but to a different degree. Bedding-plane analyses: Coal, because of its laminated nature, will break preferentially along bedding planes, especially where adjacent constituents are poorly cemented to each other. Although Australia is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, the last few years have not been easy for companies in Western Australia's Pilbara region (see map) where more than 90% of the nation's iron ore is produced. For at least two years, the industry has been plagued by dwindling markets abroad, production-crippling strikes at home, skyrocketing costs (well above the official 13% annual inflation rate), an acute shortage of investment capital, increasingly ferocious competition from foreign iron ore producers-and, as if all this weren't enough, by an over-valued currency that has caused incalculable damage not only to iron ore producers but to the entire mining industry of Australia. (This last problem was mitigated less than two months ago, on November 28, 1976, when the Australian dollar was devalued by a whopping 17 1/2%.)

THE adiabatic elastic deformation of a body is accompanied by a change in temperature. This phenomenon is known as the thermoelastic effect. Under adiabatic conditions the temperature of a metal bar is decreased by an elastic elongation and is increased by an elastic compression. All materials which elongate on heating behave in this manner. The sign of the thermoelastic temperature change is reversed for the few materials which have a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. The following equation for the thermoelastic effect can be derived from fundamental thermody-namic theorems, as shown in the Appendix: dT8 =-a1/cs T dss [1] Cs In this equation, T is the absolute temperature, S is the entropy, a, is the coefficient of linear thermal expansion, cs' is the heat capacity per unit volume at constant stress and s is the stress (positive in tension). Eq 1 can be applied to small, but finite changes in stress in the following form: ?Ts =- a1/cs T?ss [2] The sign of the temperature change AT is opposite to that of the change in stress s for materials which have a positive coefficient of thermal expansion. Eq 2 has been verified for many different materials and stresses at room temperature. No previous publication appears to have been devoted to an in- vestigation of the thermoelastic effect over a range of temperatures. Review of Literature Lord Kelvin (W. Thomson) presented a general theory of the thermoelastic effect in 1851' and later applied it to a solid, subject to an arbitrary system of stresses'. His analysis was based on a cycle of isothermal and constant-strain transformations and led to Eq 2 above. Even today, one of the clearest expositions of the thermoelastic effect is found in Lord Kelvin's article on elasticity in the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (1878). R. THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

Billions of tons of bulk solid materials are processed through our industrial plants each year, and the tonnage is steadily rising. It has been estimated that for every dollar spent in industry as a whole, approxinlately 30 cents is consumed in the handling of bulk solid materials. It is in this category that tremendous savings are possible through the use of improved techniques. Since World War 11, the mining, steel, chemical, and grain industries, among others have made use of increased materials-handling automation in order to gain some of these savings. However, in a chain of automatic operations, every link must be completely reliable, for if there is a single failure, the whole system immediately becomes ineffective. Only too often the weak link in the chain proves to be the flow of bulk solids from bins. To contribute to the fundamental knowledge in this area, a research study has been continuing at The Ohio State University. The principal objective of the investigation has been to study the internal stresses existing in confined bulk solids. LITERATURE SURVEY Literature studies have revealed that many outstanding people have made contributions to the field of bulk solids. For instance, C. F. Jenkin,1 suggested: a. The pressure on a bin wall is not directly proportional to the depth beneath the surface of material in the bin. b. The vertical pressure distribution on the base of a bin is not actually uniform but is a variable. c. Arches form in bins as a result of very small deformations of the material in the bin. This deformation causes a series of gaps to appear, and consequently causes the disappearance of diagonal forces that cannot act across these gaps. The removal of the diagonal forces causes horizontal forces to be introduced which seem to be the chief cause of arching. 11. A. Janssen,4 in 1895 in connection with his experiments on bins, derived a differential equation to describe both the lateral and vertical pressure in bins with vertical sides. This represents a significant contribution to bulk solid theory, and thus its solution is reproduced as follows: L = KV = RW/U' [l-e -U'KY/R] I where L is the lateral pressure of the bulk solid in psf., V is the vertical pressure of the bulk solid in psf., K is the ratio of the lateral pressure to the vertical pressure at any point, R is the hydraulic radius of the bin in feet, W is the density of the bulk solid in lbs. per cubic feet, U' is the coefficient of friction between the stored material and the bin wall, and Y is the head of material above the point in question in feet. In 1903, Jamieson,6 in an elaborate series of experiments on full sized bins measured vertical and lateral pressures by hydraulic diaphragms. He determined many values for mediums of corn, wheat, peas, and flaxseed. In 1951, Caughey, Tooles, and scheer3 measured both lateral and vertical pressure in deep bins by using strain guages on steel bands. THE production of tin from Mexico has never reached the point of being considered a national industry, but the distribution of tin ores is so widespread that there are possibilities that one day it may become of importance. Of the twenty-seven states of the Republic, tin claims have been taken up in sixteen. In all there had been taken up to the end of 1926, two hundred and twenty-five claims, of a total area of about 7400 acres. The first historical mention of tin in the Americas is found in a letter of Cortez to the Emperor, Charles the Fifth, of Spain, which is as follows: Speaking of his manufacture of some small cannon, he says: "For these reasons I took considerable pains to get copper from some provinces of this country, and bought it at a high price in order to get it quicker.

WHEN we want to interpret some problem which faces us at the present, if that problem be a social or political movement, we turn to the pages of history for 'information. If the problem be one of science or of industry we turn to the library of the subject and endeavor to translate the present from the experience of the past. I wonder if you would bear with me for a few minutes as I look back to the time when I was going through mining school and looking forward with hope, it is true and with confidence also, but still with some trepidation and an occasional qualm, to the month of June when the class of 1897 would be hunting jobs. Those were the years 1893 to 1897. Those years saw the Treasury of the United States so empty of gold that the President had to appeal to financiers to accept the country's promises to pay in return for $100,000,000 in gold. And the invectives that were hurled at both their heads for such a betrayal of the people sound strangely similar to those you read today being daily written and screamed at another President for taking us into the League of Nations or for not issuing bonds in huge amounts for unemployment relief, or for not adopting somebody else's particular specific for the relief of hard times.

DURING late years, the proportion of beileficiated iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior District has increased very rapidly. By benefication is meant washing, screening, drying, sintering or any process by which the grade or structure of the crude ore is improved before shipment. In 1915, only 3,000,- 000 tons, or 9 per cent, of t6e total Minnesota shipment was beneficiated ore, compared with 13,500,000 tons, or 35 per cent, of the total Minnesota shipment in 1925. This increase is, of course, due to the fact that iron and steel can be made more cheaply after beneficiating these ores than they could have been had these ores not been so treated. Fundamentally, however, several causes contribute to the necessity for beneficiating iron ores, such as depletion of the reserves of high-grade ores, the iron ore leasing systems and taxation methods and, at the smelting plants, a better understanding of blast-furnace operations, increased operating costs and increased sulfur content of blast-furnace coke. As economic conditions change, it is by no means certain that the proportion of beneficiated ore shipped each year is going to continue to increase. Undoubtedly some of the beneficiation operations are not economically sound at the present time and what the future has in store for the iron ore industry is problematical. Generally speaking, the cost of fuel for blast-furnace operations will increase as time goes on and in order to continue to produce cheap iron and steel, some of the other costs must be lowered. Freight and labor rates probably can- not be reduced. The cost of producing iron ore cannot be reduced much below the present price. It therefore appears that the best opportunity for maintaining iron and steel prices at their present level in spite of in- creased costs of labor and raw materials is to use. less or cheaper raw materials. This, of course, contemplates an improvement in metallurgical processes all along the line and, as a matter of fact, we can confidently expect these improvements because scientific investigations will undoubtedly be even more productive in the future than they have been in the past.

A key step in feed water treatment for generating wet steam for thermal oil recovery is the removal of calcium and magnesiunt hardness by cation-exchange series softening. Knowing the solubility of any scale forming salts in brines at elevated temperatures is necessary for fixing the level to which the feed water must be softened. Such calcium sulfate solubility data, previously not available above 392F, were determined by the authors in a flow equilibrium apparatus mud will be reported elsewhere. These data were used to develop a method for predicting the solubility of anhydrite in hot water or steam droplets for saturated steam pressures as high as 2,000 psig (637F). (The calcium sulfate solubility product is represented by a combination of two factors, one reflecting the effects of ionic strength and the other accounting for the effects of complex ion formation in either calcium-magnesium-rich or sulfate-rich brines.) The method is applied to a calcium-magnesium-rich brine If moderately high salinity from a pilot hot-water flood, I nd to several sulfate-rich, low-salinity feed waters and l lowdown (cooled steam droplets) samples from steam s ak operations. The predicted calcium hardness levels corresponding to the calcium sulfate solubilities agreed reasonably well with the results of laboratory solubility determinations run on the field samples. Further testing of the method is needed for brines of other composition classes. Existing field cation exchange softeners in the cases tested are performing adequately since all the samples were found to be undersaturated with respect to calcium sulfate at their operating temperatures. Introduction Prevention of scaling caused by precipitation of calcium sulfate (anhydrite) is of considerable concern in connection with thermal recovery processes using wet steam or hot water. To avoid anhydrite precipitation in a heated system, an engineer must keep the product of the calcium and sulfate concentrations in the water or steam droplets below the value of the solubility product of anhydrite for the temperature and brine composition in question. Usually it is most practical to keep the concentration product lower than the solubility product by keeping calcium low in the presence of high sulfate, or by keeping sulfate low in the presence of high calcium. This can be done by a choice of combinations of natural waters and water treatment processes (such as series cation exchange softening to remove calcium). Until recently, few anhydrite solubility data, particularly for solutions containing other salts, were available for temperatures above 392F (211 psig steam); Marshall, Slusher and Jones' studied the CaS0,-NaCI-H,O system up to 392F and surveyed the work of previous investigators. To model natural brines, one needs to study the solubility of anhydrite in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and their mixtures. Since steam pressures as high as 2,000 psig (637F) may be involved in thermal oil recovery projects, a solubility study was conducted between 482 and 617F.' Discussed in this paper is the application of these data to the prediction of anhydrite precipitation in some practical steam soak and hot-water injection projects. Any simple method for predicting the solubility of an inorganic compound over a wide range of temperatures and solution compositions must be based on some assumptions, and therefore must yield approximate results. On the one hand, natural brines contain too many ionic species for all to be included in a simple scheme; on the other hand, there is no adequate theoretical basis for the exact prediction of solubility in even simple solutions of mixed electrolytes. However, it is possible at a given temperature to base a reasonable prediction scheme on two phenomena:'-' the increase in solubility with increasing total concentrations of all ions (as measured by the ionic strength; see the Appendix), and an increase due to formation of cornplexes between calcium ions and sulfate ions and between sulfate and magnesium ions. Stiff and Davis' developed such a scheme for predicting the solubility of gypsum (CaSO, ¦ 2H,O) in brines at temperatures u~ to 212F. However, for the higher temperaturei of present interest, the stable solid phase is anhydrite (CaSO,). This study involves a two-part method for predicting anhydrite solubility products. First, one predicts a value K, for a given ionic strength I and a given temperature T corresponding to mo./msr, = 1 from data of the CaS0,-NaCI-H,O system. Second, one determines a group of factors F .= F(Ca) • F(Mg) • F(SO,), where the individual factors account for increases in the solubility product due to complex formation by high concentrations, respectively, of calcium, magnesium and sulfate. THE specific aim of this work has been to study certain forms of internal deterioration which occur in tungsten filaments when subjected to high temperatures under various conditions, and to determine the cause of such deterioration. This would naturally lead to a consideration of methods of control or means of prevention of the phenomena. The deterioration was first noticed as a peculiar condition in the grain boundaries of certain tungsten filaments which had been burned t for long periods in lamps. In these cases it was noted that the grain bound aries contained a number of minute black dots which were at first thought to be non-metallic inclusions. It was demonstrated later that these dots or pits, as they were designated, could be readily produced by burning filaments in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen. This method was convenient and adequate for the purpose, and was adopted for most of the work discussed in this paper. The evidence accumulated to date indicates that these pits arc actually small voids between the grains. The purpose of this paper is to, present the information on this interesting subject gathered during a period of about 3 years. As applied to tungsten, the subject appears to be of considerable importance, experience having shown that this pitting is frequently associated with poor performance of filaments in lamps.

RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

MOST important of the various departments of a custom smelter, so far as the financial welfare of the plant and the confidence of shippers are concerned, is that responsible for correct weights, accurate moisture sampling, and the obtaining of control samples that are strictly representative of the lot of ore from which they come. Treatment rate schedules are based on the metal content of ores received, reduced to dry weight. These rates must be low enough to keep the ship- per from taking his business else- where and still must allow the smelter a profit. Assay results, likewise, must satisfy the shipper, but if they show too high a metal content for the ore they represent, the smelter will actually lose money. It is always considered, and constant checks through umpire assays prove, that laboratory results are closely correct, so the bur- den of the plant profit and loss and the satisfaction of the shipper rest squarely upon the sampling department.

PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. MORE has been said about the iron and steel situation on the Pacific Coast than has been done .about it; but perhaps as much has been done as conditions have warranted. The production of finished steel in an amount sufficient to take care of the local demand for certain sizes and shapes is an established industry on the .coast. The amount .and the variety of products, so made, changes with the demand or them which is largely dependent upon the growth in population. An increasing demand will not always increase the quantity of steel produced locally because the cost of production may rise so -high as to let in steel from the outside. The reason for this is that all of the steel made in the West comes from steel scrap, the supply of which is .limited. From the standpoint of the metallurgist, it would. be desirable to subititute pig iron for some of ' the steel scrap, but this cannot be done profitably because the pig iron now available is too expensive. In other words, the large future demand for steel and pig iron on the Pacific Coast must be supplied by reduction of ores in the West, unless we are to be content with paying high transportation costs for material produced elsewhere. ."

THE program for the 126th meeting of the Institute, to be held in San Francisco Sept. 25 to 29, 1922, is being prepared by the General Arrangements Committee of the Local Section and its details are not yet ready for announcement. The program, however, has developed to a sufficient extent to permit members to decide whether they wish to attend or not. Briefly stated, Monday, Sept. 25, will be devoted to technical sessions which will be held at the Engineers Club, and there will be as many sessions as may be required to present the papers available, some of which are listed below. Under the registration fee plan (see July magazine) entertainment expenses during the week in San Fran-cisco will be borne by those in attendance, not by local members alone. Members who expect to attend the San Francisco meeting, but who will not accompany the President's party, will please notify C. H. Thermodynamic calculations predict the species vaporizing from metal-oxide mixtures when reliable free energy functions, enthalpies of formation, and dissociation energies are available for the possible gaseous and condensed oxide components. Calculations of the oxygen to metal ratio in the vapor phase compared with the oxygen to metal ratio in a liquid metal saturated with oxide impurity are presented The possibility of purifying metals contaminated with oxide by vacuum melting or by distillation is discussed. Kinetic considerations affecting rates are neglected. IN recent years extensive information has been obtained on the thermodynamic stability of gaseous oxides of metals due to a variety of new types of measurement. Perhaps the greatest amount of information has come from the application of mass spec-trometry to the study of high-temperature vapors.' In many instances oxides of quite unusual oxidation states are found to be important in the high-temperature vapors.
