The lanthanide elements from lanthanum (atomic number 57) to lutetium (71) plus yttrium (39) are called the rare-earth elements; scandium (21) is chemically similar to yttrium and the lanthanides, but differs in occurrence. The rare-earth metals were divided into three categories by the chemist, Berzelius, in the early 1800s; however, modern usage defines only two groups. The cerium group is named after the most abundant -element and comprises lanthanum (57), cerium (58), praseodymium (59), neodymium (60), promethium (61), samarium (62), europium (63), and gadolinium (64). Traces of natural promethium were discovered in apatite in Finland (Erametsa, 1965). The yttrium group, also named after its most abundant representative, comprises terbium (65), dysprosium (66), holmium (67), erbium (68), thulium (69), ytterbium (70), and lutetium (71). Yttrium most closely resembles holmium in chemical properties, and occurs most commonly with the heavy lanthanides. The rare-earth minerals may be divided into cerium-group, yttrium-group, or mixed-group classes. A number of rare-earth minerals contain thorium and uranium, but these are variable in content and are not essential to the composition of the minerals. In monazite, a mineral that is a principal source of rare earths, the worldwide average content of thorium oxide is 7.2 % ; however, varieties of monazite contain as little as 0.001% and as much as 31.5% thoria. Monazite is the chief ore of thorium and, until recently, thorium has been the main product; the rare-earth metals were in fact byproducts. However, because of the great demand for rare-earth metals by the petroleum refining and the iron and steel industries since the early 1970s, the roles have been reversed so that thorium is now the byproduct. Uses A 9 to 1 mixture of yttrium and thorium oxides is used for high-intensity incandescent lamps and for high-temperature-resistant windows and lenses. Yttrium oxysulfide and orthovanadate, doped with europium oxide, are used in color television tube phosphors. Yttrium, as well as cerium, praseodymium, and samarium, is alloyed with cobalt to form strong permanent magnets. It hardens magnesium alloys and retards the oxidation of iron-chromium alloys. Yttrium-iron garnets are used for transmitting low microwave frequencies. Yttrium-aluminum garnets are used as host crystals for lasers and as artificial gems. Yttria also forms strong, stable, high-temperature refractories. Gadolinium-gallium garnets are used in substrate wafers on which bubble-memory films are deposited. Rare-earth chlorides, particularly of lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium, are used as catalysts for petroleum cracking. Mischmetal is used for lighter flints and to improve the ductility and impact strength of iron and steel alloys. Mischmetal also reduces the fatigue resistance of magnesium and aluminum alloys. Rare-earth oxides are used for polishing glasses and lenses. Individual or specific combinations of high-purity oxides are used as additives in glass to maintain or change its color, dispersion, or refractive index. High-purity oxide combinations are also used to color tile and to opacify porcelain enamel. Rare-earth fluorides and oxides are used in carbon-arc electrodes to provide incandescent white light. Lanthanum or gadolinium oxysulfide phosphors, activated with terbium, are used as x-ray screen intensifiers. Hydrogen can be stored by sorption on lanthanum-nickel alloys (Anon., 1979). Operating data is presented for a Bird centrifuge used to dewater coal treated at one preparation plant. The data include: (1 ) percentages of solids in centrifuge feed, cake, and effluent and the plant circulating water for a period of four consecutive operating shifts, and (2) screen-sizing data for a number of centrifuge feed, cake; effluent, and combined cake-effluent samples. An evaluation is included of the relationships between fine solids in the centrifuge feed and the total moisture content of the centrifuge cake.

The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.' There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G. A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. 11. The First, or Coarsest, Section of the Field. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a definite ratio. INTRODUCTION The first commercial plant in the world to successfully produce pellets from manganese ore fines is the ICOMI pelletizing facility in northern Brazil. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the manganese pelletizing process that was developed through a cooperative R & D program by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and ICOMI, i.e., Industria e Commercio de Minerios, S. A. The process combines heavy- media and gravity separation, reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and pelletizing on a straight-grate indurating machine. It produces high-grade manganese pellets from reviously unsalable low-grade ore fines at a rate of 20,000 tonnes (1) per month. The physical properties of the manganese pellets are comparable to those of iron ore pellets. The pelletizing plant, built at a cost of about 18 million dollars, is part of an ICOMI complex that includes manganese ore mining, an ore-washing plant, and railroad and port facilities, as well as two town sites. These two towns, one at the mine and the other at the port, each with complete community services, were built by ICOMI to serve the needs of over 1500 employees that operate the industrial complex. To give an idea of the magnitude of the investment represented by this complex, the cost up to 1957 to develop the mine and supporting services and social infrastructure was over 100 million dollars. It should be borne in mind that the above capital cost figures are in dollars of the years during which the respective projects were initiated and completed.

According to the estimates prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey, the area underlain by workable coal-beds in the United States is 496,776 sq. miles. Of this total area, 480 sq. miles contain the entire anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania. The bituminous coal-fields are estimated to be contained in areas, aggregating 250,051 sq. miles. The grade of coal between bituminous and lignite, and which is designated by the Geological Survey as " sub-bituminous," is estimated to be contained within areas aggregating 97,636 sq. miles, while the areas containing lignite aggregate 148,609 sq. miles. The coal-fields are divided, for the sake of convenience in classification, into six main provinces, as follows: 1. The Eastern. Province, containing the anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania and the bituminous coal-fields of the Appalachian region—namely, those of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Ala bama, and small outlying areas in North Carolina. 2. The Interior Province, containing the bituminous coal-producing regions of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, western Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. 3. The Gulf Province, containing the lignite-areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. 4. The Northern or Great Plains Province, containing the lignite and sub-bituminous areas of North and South Dakota, eastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming. 5. The Rocky Mountain Province, containing the bituminous and sub-bituminous areas of western Montana and western Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. 6. The Pacific Coast Province, containing the areas of Washington, Oregon, and California.

IN attempting to describe recent mining developments at the Bunker Hill mine, it may be well to recall first the old days of hand mining when holes were laboriously drilled by hand to a maximum depth of three feet, and were shot one or two at a time, in order that the miner could take advantage of every slip, crack or bedding plane, and so save as much drilling as possible. Broken muck, of course, was loaded by hand shoveling into wheelbarrows or small cars, and heading advances or stope ton¬nages were governed by the number of men that could find room to work in any given place. The first big improvement over these old methods was the introduction of the reciprocating type of air-powered rock drill. This innovation, crude as it was, enabled the miners to set up a machine and drill a complete round of holes in one shift; but broken muck was still loaded by hand, and the size and rate of advance in headings were limited by time required to remove the broken rock. The next improvement of consequence was the appearance of the hammer-type rock drill, which greatly increased drilling speed over the reciprocating type, and made possible the completion of a full cycle in one shift, by the use of crossbars in headings, and permitted drilling and mucking to be carried on at the same time. Rock drills continued to improve as time passed, and finally the smaller and more efficient mucking machines appeared on the scene, and it became possible to muck out a round of broken rock and have a clean setup for one or more drill columns and machines. A complete cycle of mucking, drilling, and blasting was completed in one shift with an average advance of five feet. These conditions prevailed for several years, but as the mine grew deeper, the distances to transport the workers grew longer, and this fact together with the shortening of the working day, soon presented the problem of attempting to complete a cycle of operations in a shift of only six hours at the working faces. Anticipating this condition, the operating heads at the Bunker Hill had started an intensive study of more and better mechanization, and over a period of comparatively few years have adopted and placed in service methods and machines that make it possible for a three-man crew to consistently advance headings seven by nine feet in cross section, at the rate of eight feet, and more, per shift, doing all the mucking, switching, drilling and loading. These improvements consist of the following major items: I. The development of a light, flexible, easily transported jumbo equipped with pneumatic columns (Fig I), that has decreased the "setting up" and "tearing down" time an average of 1 1/2 hr per shift, or 25 pct of the available working time. Due to safety-imposed constraints on clearances for mobile bulk handling equipment, it is necessary to optimally select a unit based on speed and size. The unit cannot be both large and fast. Since output is proportional to both size (or capacity) and speed, the combination must be carefully examined to maximize output. A simple graphical procedure and a calculus-based solution are presented to accomplish this. While the procedure applies to all mobile bulk handlers, as an example of the solution technique, attention is focused on shuttle cars. Background Major variables To fully define a bulk handling problem, the conditions, equipment, and activities must be characterized. The conditions and activities, when lumped together, are termed "encumbered space," since they "act to impede motion, as with a burden" (Lineberry, 1979). The insertion of mobile bulk handling equipment into what is already a difficult set of conditions and activities compounds the state of encumbrance, as limited space is competed for by many normal and life support systems. Long (1972) recognized the effects of design criteria, including road width, on haulage vehicle speed and, therefore, on production. Velocity-clearance curves Velocity-clearance curves are either available or can be constructed in the field. A preliminary set of curves for average conditions and activities is shown in Fig. 1, where clearances are only for the side of the vehicle (Lineberry and Adler, 1984). These curves set the safe speed limits for a vehicle operating at given clearances, under given conditions and activities. When feasible, velocity-clearance curves should be constructed through field measurement and observation. Curve construction should also consider haulway roughness, distances, and operator skill, as well as loading and dumping characteristics. It should be noted that haulage capacity determination is a total systems problem, not one just dependent on velocity and clearances. Production requirements and company capabilities also influence capacity determination.

(communication to the Secretary): I have read with much pleasure the interesting and valuable paper by Mr. Kunz, and hope that the following brief notes, gathered a few years ago, while a resident in Mexico City, may help to elucidate the subjcct: Turquoise.—This was known to the Aztecs as Xihuitl. Santiago Ramirez states that they found it in the Cerro Xicohtzonc, close to Atzcapatzalco, a suburb of the City of Mexico (compare page 59). Opal.—This was known to the ancient Mexicans, for they named it mezcuitlatt (compare page 63). Jade.—Under this was iucluded a third mineral, prehnite, not mentioned by Mr. Kunz. According to James D. Dana, part of the "jade " of China is prehnite; and Humboldt informs us, in his work on New Spain, that the same species of jade is known in some parts of Mexico as mahagua (majagua ?). The same writer says, in his Views of the Cordilleras, that the Aztec name Tecpatl included flint, hornstone, and green jade; and finally, in his Travels in South America," he discusses the nature of the ancient amazon-stones, and declares them to have been made out of a jade resembling " compact feldspar," one of the constituents of the gabbro verde di Corsica. IIence those stones were probably composed of nephrite. According to Humboldt, the form given to them most frequently is that of the Babylomian cylinder, longitudinally perforated, and loaded with inscriptions and figures. They were also cut by the natives into very thin plates, perforated at the center, suspended by a thread, and worn as amulets. According to the historian Clavijero, the specific name given by the Aztecs to the nephritic stone (jadeite) was Quitzalitztli,

FROM the Pittsburgh coal bed in the four states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia has been produced an output that, at mine prices, represents a greater value than any other single mineral deposit in the world has yielded.12 While this distinction may in a few years pass to the gold reef of the Witwatersrand, it is possible that eventually, owing to the tremendous reserves still remaining, the ultimate yield of the Pittsburgh bed will be greater than that of any other known single deposit. Considering its importance, not a great deal has been written of its early history and development as a whole; most of the accounts have been of limited localities, or, at the most, of the area within a single state. In "Coal through the Ages" the writer mentioned some references to its early history, but this study will deal not only with its history but with the character of the bed, where and why it was first developed, and its effect upon the states in which it is found. It has not been the intention to write a detailed history of the development of the seam in each locality, as neither time nor inclination were available for doing such work, but only to show the influences that tended to hasten or retard such development. In general the historical matter ends about 1830, when geological surveys began to be made. Some of the maps show data available only since that time, and the sections about coal preparation and coking have been extended to the present time to show the changing conditions. It is believed that the early history includes all published records, and many more sources than those shown in the bibliography were consulted. It is quite likely that some references to coal in this area may be found in the unpublished papers of some of our early soldiers and colonizers, which exist in several libraries, and it is hoped that some future

The production of petroleum in Germany during 1932 totaled about 1,608,558 bbl., a slight increase over the 1, 602,517 bbl. produced in 1931. A decline, as shown in Table 1, occurred chiefly in the Volkenroda (Thuringia) field. The total production of the other fields (salt domes), however. reached a new record, about 21 per cent above 1931. Leaching in place at Cananea began in the 1920's on a limited scale. The first plants were small wooden boxes located underground in the Capote and Oversight mines, and output was low. Scrap iron was used as precipitant. Later several other small plants were started up. Leaching was limited entirely to underground areas, and production remained low. The Veta precipitating plant, the first on a larger scale, was put into operation in the late 1920's. After a period of intermittent service it was rebuilt in 1946 and has since been running continuously.

ORDERING'S effect on the creep strength and other plastic properties of metals is unknown at the present time. Sachs and Weerts' attempted to compare the mechanical properties of the ordered and disordered state by comparing a quenched specimen with one annealed for a long time at a low temperature. This experiment is unsatisfactory because it introduces a possible effect from quenching. Barrett' used a hot impact test, but his method was not sufficiently sensitive to indicate any discontinuity in plastic behavior in the neighborhood of the critical temperature. On the theoretical side, Fisher9 as suggested that short range order would strengthen an alloy, but he gives no conclusions as to the effect of long range order. Cottrell" has discussed the interaction between long range order and dislocations, but does not indicate whether slip in a completely ordered alloy without domain boundaries is appreciably more difficult than slip in the disordered state. Because order exists in so many alloy systems, it is most important to prove experimentally whether long range order weakens or strengthens a metal.
