This paper is concerned with the layout of a conveyor and beneficiation plant system involving several mines and a single point of delivery. The objective of the procedure is to locate the conveyor lines and beneficiation plants in an optimal manner considering the economics of scale inherent in both the transportation and beneficiation processes. Upon completion of the mining plan, the layout of the conveyor network is achieved through the principle of Steiner minimal trees. The optimal number and location of beneficiation plants for this layout are then determined using a sequential economic analysis based upon the flow of material from the individual sources to the ultimate destination. The practical aspects of the method and the advantages and disadvantages of its use are discussed to link the model to a practical problem.

The many mechanical, geological, and economic factors which influence the planning of a directional drilling program are thoroughly discussed and analyzed. It is demonstrated that the planning of a directionally drilled multiple-well artificial island location is a complicated undertaking and that it is imperative that complete planning and engineering analysis be undertaken before the program is started. Complete planning is profitable because all of the factors influencing the directional work are in general interrelated and many time compromises have to be made before a harmonious program results. The engineering control necessary to accomplish a complicated directional drilling program is outlined. Various means by which engineering control can be increased, such as cylinder drilling specifications, are given. A hypothetical example is developed for a complete offshore artificial island of ten wells to demonstrate the more important factors involved in the planning. Included with this example are special charts and tables which make more rapid the drafting of directional drilling proposals and maps. Introduction A petroleum engineer must consider many and varied factors when planning a long range directional drilling program for an offshore or inaccessible location on an oil structure. The basic principles of direc- tional drilling planning and operation must be reconciled with his company's drilling practices, and frequently special concessions to standard drilling and production practices should be made. The field techniques and tools used in directional drilling are well known and widely used, but the deliberate, careful planning of a complete directional program is in the main a recent innovation. This development, plus the increased demand for oil resources and the consequent exploitation of inaccessible structures and offshore locations, has placed this problem before many engineering departments for the first time. Directional drilling programs of a very complex and difficult nature have been successfully carried out in the Mid-Continent and Pacific Coast regions. The planning itself of a directional drilling project, however, has not had the careful analysis it deserves and we can reasonably expect widespread future progress along thesc lines. Data and experience gained in these programs by the directional drilling service companies and the oil producers have been studied with the objective of giving the engineer a better conception of the factors which govern the various steps in planning a series of directional wells. The newest engineering procedures are the result of recent careful analysis of years of directional drilling work accomplished under the supervision of directional drilling service companies working with the oil companies. WITH the object of adapting high-school vocational courses to the industrial needs of the community, a few high-school officials in West -Virginia working with the School of Mines of the State university decided to try an innovation this year. The purpose of this experiment was to teach coal mining in two high schools situated in mining communities. We thought that if a course in coal mining would be included in the list of optional courses offered in the high school, it might interest some of the boys, and if the course were properly taught it would undoubtedly be of inestimable value to those boys who later decided to take up mining work as their vocation. This coal-mining course was started last September in the Berwind and Gary high schools in West Virginia. The high-school officials in their conferences with' us decided that we should work up the outline of this course and they would assign the science teachers of the schools as instructors, with ,the understanding that we would help 'these instructors with this work. We consented to all this and submitted -an outline to the school officials which they are following this year.

Enthalpy-entropy diagrams are presented for natural gases of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 gravity over the pressure range of 5 to 10,000 Ib. per sq. in. and temperature range of 32º to 700°F. The charts indicate directly the work requirement and temperature rise for adiabatic compression or temperature change for free emansion of natural eases. Computation and Uses of Charts The Mollier diagram (Fig. 4), in which the enthalpy (heat content) is plotted against the entropy with lines of constant temperature, pressure,, and in some cases volume, has been found most convenient when dealing with the compression, expansion, and flow of fluids. In dealing with the flow of fluids, the sum of the increase in the enthalpy, AH, plus the increase in kinetic energy, AM —, plus the increase in potential energy, ?MZ, representing the total increase in energy of the fluid in flow, is equal to the sum of the heat q, and work added, —w, to the fluid while flowing between the entrance and exit of the flow system. AH + AM— + ?MZ = q-w [1] In cases where there is no significant change in potential energy or in kinetic energy (velocity), it follows that the increase in enthalpy is equal to the total energy supplied to the fluid. Under such conditions' the changes in the property of the fluid as it flows through a throttling valve, choke, or any other similar arrangement, may be read directly from the enthalpy-entropy diagram by following a horizolltal line between the known pressures' When compressing Or expanding a gas by means of a Or or engine in which no heat is added to or subtracted from the gas, but only work done, the changes in the properties of the gas may be determined along a vertical line of constant entropy between the entering and exit pressures. The power required for the compression of the gas may be readily determined by converting the increase in enthalpy into the desired units. The enthalpy-entropy diagram for natural gases is to the gas engineer what the steam diagram is to the steam-power engineer. For this reason it would be extremely convenient if a reasonably satisfactory enthalpy-entropy diagram could be prepared as a function of the gravity of the gas. A careful study of the known properties of natural gas indicate that this is possible. The effect of temperature upon the enthalpy at constant pressure is expressed as the "heat capacity" or "specific heat" of the gas. The best available data for natural and petroleum refinery gases indicates the relationship shown in Fig. I. From this it is clear that the specific heat of natural gases is a function only of the gas gravity and the temperature at atmospheric pressure. it is well known1 that racemic mixtures of optical isomers can be separated by passing their solutions through a column packed with r- or 1-quartz powder so that one of the isomers becomes adsorbed selectively on the asymmetric quartz surfaces. Although the natural occurrence of r- and 1-quartz is more or less equally distributed, some localities show enough deviations toward a higher proportion of l-quartz2 to suggest that optical isomerism might influence quartz flotation. Beta-amines have an asymmetric carbon atom, and therefore optical activity may be expected. Beta-amines are reported to behave quite differently from alpha-amines in the flotation upgrading of certain oxidized iron ores.3 It is of interest, for both practical and theoretical reasons, to determine whether or not optical isomerism plays a role in the amine flotation of quartz. In this article the results of Hallimond tube flotation tests and of adsorption measurements using d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on both r- and 1-quartz are compared. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was chosen for the tests because it is commercially available in optical isomers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Brazilian quartz crystals were hand-sorted according to the difference in trigonal trapezohedral faces, and each crystal was further checked by the Airy's spiral.4 The respective crystals were then crushed, and the -150 + 200-mesh fractions were screened out for the Hallimond tube tests. The samples were cleaned by brief leaching with warm, dilute hydrochloric acid, and then by repeated rinsing with distilled water. In preparation for the adsorption measurements, they were then dry-ground in a pebble mill for several hours, washed a few times with distilled water, and finally dried in a vacuum desiccator. By means of the Krypton gas adsorption method, the specific surfaces of r- and 1-quartz samples were determined to be 27,700 and 19,800 sq cm per gm respectively, the difference being due mainly to the decantation procedure rather than to the inherent difference in their grindability. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was the only collector used in the study. It was solubilized by neutralizing with 110% of the stoichiometric requirement of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. The specific rotation of the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was determined with a polari-meter using sodium D line to be, Although the d-beta-phenylis~prop~lamine showed absorption maxima in the wave length region of 250 to 270 millimicrons, due presumably to the phenyl group, these peaks were too sensitive to be used for colorimetric determination of the residual concentration in the adsorption measurements. The amine-picrate method, used in the colorimetric analysis of dodecylammonium chloride,' was found to work satisfactorily for the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine. The adsorption densities were thus determined after equilibrating 40 gm of the ground quartz sample with 300 ml of solution by tumbling in separate glass-stoppered Erlenmeyer flasks for one hour. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 presents the adsorption densities of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on the r- and 1-quarts in the pH range of 6 to 7.5. In agreement with data reported in the literature, the adsorption density of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was slightly higher on the r-quartz than on the 1-quartz, although the difference was not as pronounced as one might expect from the capacity of r-quartz and 1-quartz to separate racemic

The reduction of a metal in an aqueous solution may be defined in terms of its source of electrons. In electrolytic reduction electrons flow as a result of applied voltages. In other systems electron sources are reducing gases or metals of lower electron affinity. In the latter two cases it is increasingly evident that reduction is electro-chemical in nature in that electrons flow through one or more conducting phases even though the discharge reactions may not be rate controlling. Electrode processes impmtant in reduction and metal deposition are reviewed and extended to contact reduction by precipitation (cementation) on mme electropositive metals. Contact reduc- tion Processes are ancient in origin and represent techniques which have had successful application for hundreds of years. In spite of this, little has been understood in terms of the dynamic properties of such systems or of important side reactions. In recent years an increasing amount of laboratory work has been carried out on contact reduction and an attempt is made here to summarize the important findings. Undoubtedly the interest aroused recently may be attributed to improved reactor design which has demonstrated on a commercial basis accelerated metal recovery by taking advantage of important kinetic and chemical parameters. of gold cyanide (Au(CN)-), respectively. The most common method for the reduction of ions in solution is by electrolysis. The impure metal is made the anode and the ions are reduced at the cathode. Leach liquors containing reducible ions may similarly be reduced electrolytically using an inert anode. The latter process is referred to as electrowinning. In recent years hydrogen has been used successfully as a gaseous re-Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Metallurgical Society (AIME). In 1957 Dr. WADSWORTH was given the AlME Best Paper Award as coauthor of a paper on the roasting of sphalerite. On July 1, 1968 Dr. WADS-WORTH started an 24 month assignment in the Philippine Islands to assist in the development of graduate metallurgical engineering at the University of the Philippines. In addition to graduate teaching and curriculum development he will establish research programs to develop extraction processes for metals production in the islands. This treatise is the sequel of a paper on "Russell's Improved Process for the Lixiviation of Silver-ores," etc., read at the Chicago meeting, in May, 1884, and published in the Transactions, vol. xiii., page 47. The facts it presents are principally compiled from Mr. Russell's notes on his practical experience gained in various places where the Russell process has been introduced. For a complete understanding of this paper a perusal of my former one is desirable, as can be seen from the frequent references here made to it. All silver-ores that do not carry a large percentage of lead or copper can be treated by Russell's process with success and economy. I do not mean to create the impression that from ores containing considerable quantities of lead and copper a high percentage of the silver cannot be extracted by this process. Such ores, however, will, in many localities, be reduced to better advantage by smelting. In case lead-bearing silver-ores are suitable for concentration, it may be profitable to concentrate the ore by Krom's dry system, obtaining a smelting-product high in lead, and to lixiviate the tailings and the dust. This plan has been adopted in a mill recently erected in Cortez District, Nevada. The dry system of concentration deserves the preference because it delivers the tailings and the dust in a condition ready for chloridizing-roasting. In wet concentration the drying of the tail ings would be expensive, and there would be a considerable loss of silver in slimes. Oxidized ores, containing silver chloride and lead minerals, may be lixiviated after crushing, and the tailings may be concentrated for lead. In this case wet concentration would be most suitable. This has been done at the Old Telegraph Mine, Utah. I would give, however, the preference to dry concentration in all cases which, of course, requires that concentration should precede lixiviation. A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. Industry needs a generally applicable means of defining average grain sire and grain size distribution. Students of sediments have explored this field, employing methods that might also prove useful in engineering problems. Before attempting to solve specific problems it is well to review the derivation of commonly used grade scales and the reasons for their selection. This aspect of the problem seems largely to have been lost, and a review of basic factors may suggest causes for failures in using size analysis data.

In "Sorting Before Sizing " (a paper first announced at the Pittsburgh meeting, February, 1896, but delayed in preparation and now presented at the present meeting) it is shown that if slime-tables are to do their best work on slimes below 0.5 mm. or 0.05 inch in diameter, they must be carefully sorted or classified, and fed to a series of tables suitably adjusted to the different slime-sorts. The reason is that the coarser and finer slime-sorts require respectively different adjustments of the tables. Hence, if the two are fed together upon a table which has, as nearly as may be, average adjustments, fine galena, for example, will go into the tails, or coarse quartz into the heads, or both—losses which could have been largely prevented if the slime had been carefully sorted and each sort sent to its own slime-tables. As indicated in the paper just mentioned, the present tendency in this country is generally to do away with slime-sorting or "classification," and simply to take the overflow from the hydraulic classifier and divide it among the tables by means of

An empirical equation for the prediction of the viscosity of several pure paraffin hydrocarbons and nitrogen is presented. It involves temperature, pressure and six constants of the material, and it applies reliably to both liquids and gases. The equation is similar in form to van der Waal's equation of state. For the paraffin hydrocarbons methane through r-hexane and nitrogen, an average absolute deviation of 1.9 percent was obtained on 1,006 data points described in the literature by 14 authors. When this equation is extended to complex, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, a correlation was obtained with an average absolute deviation of 9.9 percent. INTRODUCTION Equations describing the flow of gas and liquid through porous media contain the viscosity coefficient of the fluid. If other pertinent variables remain constant, the volume rate of flow is inversely proportional to this coefficient. In dealing with condensate fluids and volatile oils, however, the compositional effects resulting from changing pressure materially affect the viscosity. The effect of compositional changes also may be significant in certain secondary recovery or pressure maintenance processes, notably miscible displacement or gas injection. Early attempts to describe the performance of reservoirs utilized a volumetric material balance method wherein gas and liquid in the reservoir were identified as produced gas and liquid at the surface. This method of analysis proved adequate for reservoirs at moderate temperature and pressure that contained gas with moderately low amounts of condensable materials. The volumetric material balance procedures for "black oil" reservoirs leave much to be desired when applied to condensate and volatile oil reservoirs because phase behavior and compositional changes are relatively more important in these cases. The alternative is a compositional material balance, which in turn, requires a correlation of properties of the reservoir fluid with composition. This paper supplies this correlation in regard to viscosity, for reservoir crude oils. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The literature contains many empirical equations describing the effects of composition, temperature and pressure on the viscosities of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. However, the applicability of a majority of these equations is limited to very low pressures and to a small number of systems. Most of them, when applied to complex hydrocarbon systems, are of little value. The lack of utility of the majority of equations results from the fact that they were developed to show the separate effect of temperature, pressure or composition on viscosity, but not to predict the viscosity as a function of all three variables. And with the few exceptions noted below, they were developed to apply to much simpler systems than hydrocarbon mixtures. Eakin1 developed an equation for the viscosity of pure light hydrocarbons applicable in the gas, liquid and dense fluid regions, and in its most general form is written as µ - µo =A(ebP - e-cpk) The pure component viscosity at atmospheric pressure and temperature T, µo, was calculated using the Sutherland equation: µo = BT3/2/T + S The constants in Eakin's equation permitted the term e-CPk to become quite small at high densities (above 0.215 gm/cc), and the general equation would simplify to

MINING is one of the world's oldest industries and has pioneered the civilization of all new lands. Today, mining is not only one of the essential and basic industries of the world, but it is constantly growing in magnitude and becoming more important. We think that the most of our mining is done in the western portion of this country, but in the old State of Pennsylvania mines and products derived from minerals account for about two-thirds of the entire productive wealth of the State. As our forests are denuded, mining furnishes substitutes for timber in the way of concrete, gypsum board, etc. ; and as civilization increases the wants of mankind, mining is producing metals and minerals of every kind in increasing quantities. For example: during the past ten years the per capita consumption of copper in the United States has increased 49 per cent, to 14.56 Ib.; that of lead has increased 35 per cent, to 12.24 lb.; and that of zinc has increased 70 per cent, to 9.57 Ib. The consumption in European countries is about one-half of this, and there are other countries with large populations where there is virtually no consumption; so when all other countries catch up in consumption with our country, you can see what an enormous demand there is going to be for the metals, even to the extent of having to find substitutes for copper, lead, and zinc.

OVERWHELMING proof of the importance of oil in a modern national economy is afforded by the present European War. Treat¬ies and national boundaries have been cynically violated to secure greater supplies of the precious fuel. Petroleum substitutes have been desperately, and far from successfully, sought. The whole German military theory of the drang nach Osten, the drive to the East, is directed at cutting the British supply of oil and securing a supply for Germany. This is a war of machines, and the machines of war feed hungrily on oil. In view of this fact, it is surely comforting to know that we are living today in a nation which has surpassed all the rest of the world not merely in unearthing the raw supplies of petroleum which lie beneath its surface but also in every phase of the industry in mining, refining, processing, production, and distribution.

THE Mineral Industry Education Division of AIME has long been interested in geophysical education. Organized in 1938, a Committee on Geophysical Education presented a number of reports in succeeding years. The AIME is an engineering society; hence it might be expected that the interest of the Mineral Industry Education Division would have centered about the relation of courses in geophysics to engineering education. However, this was not the case. The burden of the discussion held under the auspices of the Committee on Geophysical Education bore on geophysics in general and particularly on its relation to geology. In the decade that has passed since those meetings much water has flowed under the bridge. Not only have the geophysical sciences developed at an extraordinarily rapid rate but the practical importance and the range of their applications have spread in ever widening circles and have even assumed a very prominent place in research programs of the military, the Army, the Navy and, particularly, the Geophysical Research Directorate of the Air Force at Cambridge, Mass. So enormously have the geophysical sciences as such grown in scope and in degree of specialization that no one man in a lifetime of study can hope to master the theoretical and experimental complexities or even to follow intelligently in the published literature all the varied accomplishments of basic research in these 'fields. As in the other sciences, most of the results of geophysical research have potential economic value and are being applied to a wider and wider range of human needs. Here we see a parallel with the older sciences and their relation to engineering. Whenever the applications of scientific results required the special experimental background, the economic outlook, and the practical knowledge characteristic of the engineer, a curriculum in that type of engineering grew up in the colleges and universities. In the words of the "Report of the Committee on Adequacy and Standards of Engineering Education" in the. January 1952 number of the Journal of Engineering Education: "Engineering education in America was not developed after a preconceived plan. It evolved in parallel with the needs of a growing country, a country engaged in the development of a vast industrialization. From the first it filled a practical need, and its design emanated largely from an evaluation of the professional requirement." The advent of the railroad created a need for scientifically trained engineers and the response was the curriculum in civil engineering. The development of steam power created the demand for a curriculum in mechanical engineering. Neither of these types of engineers was trained to cope with the requirements of electrical power, and so there came to be a curriculum in electrical engineering. The advent of radio communication and of electronics during the first World War and in the years that followed resulted in the establishment of electronics engineering, sometimes within the curriculum in electrical engineering and sometimes independent of it. The complexities of industrial management have created an ever increasing demand for industrial engineers and the consequent building up of a curriculum in industrial engineering. The wide industrial application of chemical processes required a type of engineer whose background was training in chemistry but who was able to design processes and plants on an industrial scale; hence we have the curriculum in chemical engineering. The advent of the airplane created an entirely new set of problems which were solved by the training of aeronautical engineers. Many of these have called for more and more science and mathematics. INTRODUCTION Requirements for achieving economic slope stability in open pit mining must not only be met during the operating stages but in all preceding stages of mine development. In many operating mines little or no emphasis was ever placed on evaluating the stability of possible slopes during the exploration and planning stages. The purpose of this discussion is to emphasize the necessary considerations that should be made in all stages of development in order to achieve the safest and most economic pit slopes. The most economic slopes may not always be the safest slopes and it is incumbent upon the mine operators and engineers to achieve an optimal combination of economics and safety. The stability requirements outlined are based on the profit motive and are, therefore, practically oriented. Long-term basic research or theoretical studies are considered important only to the extent that they can be shown to have a definite payoff. Consideration will first be given to the information required for stability analysis, which can be determined during the exploration and evaluation stage, followed by further stability work necessary during the mine planning and layout stage. Particular emphasis is then placed on the operating stage in which blasting, dewatering, artificial stabilization, and slope failure are discussed. Lastly, the importance of a logical and orderly research procedure is stressed. EXPLORATION AND EVALUATION STAGE The purpose of the exploration and evaluation stage in the mining scheme is to find and delineate a potential orebody. Discovery and delineation commonly involve drilling tens and in many cases hundreds of boreholes. These boreholes, which may cost as much as $20.00 per foot of depth for a cored hole, are usually abandoned once drilling is completed. Stability evaluation for a potential open pit should begin at this stage by taking advantage of the existing boreholes. Rock and soil properties, as well as hydrologic parameters, may be obtained from both the borehole and the core. R. G. K. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petroleum Division, they are to discover and promote knowledge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends upon the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas. To some extent, A. I. M. E. activities must be determined by the changing current needs of society. The great problem ahead of the world for some time is to evolve equitable types of production control in many industries, and especially is that true of the oil industry. Production control in this industry is as much an engineering function as is production development, notwithstanding it also involves the lawyer, the economist and the politician. It must be built on and around suitable engineering planning enforced by public opinion and legislation. We believe the prerequisite to any satisfactory solution of the oil industry's ills is an educational campaign establishing a better public understanding of the needs and merits of production control, by which we mean the maximum yield at the minimum cost coordinated to society's current needs. The underlying causes of the oil industry's ills are well known and generally agreed upon. In like manner there is general agreement among students of the industry that the first step toward their correction would be general adoption of oil-field developing and operating methods that would permit most efficient use of reservoir energy; that would provide for equitable distribution of oil and gas among the several owners in the pool; and also for the extraction of these products in response to market demand. It is now found, however, that general adoption of such developing and operating methods unfortunately cannot be brought about without changes being secured in certain basic laws of oil and gas, and perhaps also in the anti-trust laws. These legal changes are difficult to secure because of the widespread fear that they would tend to place the oil industry more exclusively in the hands of the major companies, and that
