The Sub-committee on Coal Mining, since its appointment, has been collecting data about subsidences in coal mines in this country, and thinks that almost all of the available data about occurrences of this sort in bituminous mines has been collected. Similar data is being compiled for the anthracite regions, which it is hoped will be ready for the 1927 meeting. As most of the bituminous seams are nearly level, the records obtained give the problem in its simplest form, without complications due to the pitch of the seam. Copies of the questionnaire, Appendix A, were mailed to all of the coal operators' associations, to most of the large operating companies and to many engineers, with the request that any data on the subject be returned to the committee, or that advice of any subsidences known be given: the replies to most of the questionnaires were general, although some specific cases were given. Many of the companies were unable to reply to all questions, as they lacked the necessary data, but in nearly every case where accuratc data was available, it was cheerfully furnished, and any additional information requested was secured. All specific cases of subsidence were followed up by correspondence, and in several cases by personal inspection. Figs. 1 to 31 were made from the information furnished. Table 1 gives measurements of elevations taken in one case at intervals from October, 1913, to May, 1918. With one exception, where the evidence cannot be released on account of a lawsuit, it is believed that the cases submitted with this report include practically all that have happened in bituminous coal mining in this country of which actual measurements were secured. Some of these have been published by Young and Stoek,l and some have been secured from other publications. In collecting these data, the subcommittee had the Engineering Societies Library extend its bibliography to date; this list is given in Appendix B. To assist in the study of the problem, all of the subsidence literature in English was examined for cases in which spccific measurements were given, and the essential data for each case are shown in Appendix C.

Coal is the geological product of entombed vegetal tissues. This view of its origin led Stopes and Wheeler to define it as "mummified plants." They evidently intended this term to be used in a broad way and to mean the preservation of the organic material, as such, regardless of the means employed to accomplish the purpose. The term " coal" should be regarded, therrfore, as broadly generic, and applicable to all accumulations of vegetal tissues as soon as they are covered and protected either by water or by earthy material. In this sense peat should be regarded as the first stage of coal formation and the term coal should include the resultant products of transformation in all other stages of the process until they have lost all resemblance to the original matter from which they were derived. If this idea of the development of coal is accepted and it is admitted, as the geologists claim, that the forces which produced this transformation of the coal have been active since vegetation began to grow upon the land, and are still in operation, it is obvious that somewhere in the world there are all gradations of this material from peat just forming in the swamps of today to graphitic anthracite which presumably marks the most advanced stage that can be recognized with certainty as belonging to the series. Some of these coals, particularly those occurring in the upper part of the series, are fairly well known because they are the ones that are most widely distributed and have been mined and utilized most extensively. On the other hand, the coals in the lower part of the series are but little known because they are not so abundant and, owing to their relative inefficiency, have been only slightly exploited and utilized, especially in regions where the better coals are abundant. The result of these conditions is that much research work has been done on coals of the higher ranks and a great body of facts regarding their physical and chemical properties and the uses to which they are best adapted has been accumulated, but little information is available regarding the coals of the lower ranks. A method for the chemical differentiation of oxidized cobalt from sulphide cobalt in complex mine and concentrator products is of considerable interest to a number of mining companies throughout the world. At Rhokana Corporation, in Northern Rhodesia, for instance, cobalt is found chiefly in the sulphide form, as carrollite, but a cobalt oxide mineral also occurs irregularly underground, and relatively small quantities in the mill feed from time to time are difficult to detect visually at the concentrator. The oxide cobalt is not amenable to the sulphide flotation process used at Rhokana and nearly all of it passes into the tailing. The occasional period when high tailing losses occur with no appreciable change in the cobalt content of the mill feed has naturally been disturbing to the concentrator staff, who had no means of determining whether an influx of cobalt oxide ore or laxity on the part of the mill flotation operators as responsible for these results. A procedure for determining oxidized copper minerals, based on their solubility in dilute sulphuric acid saturated with SO2, has been used for many years in the copper industry. In the presence of cuprite the procedure fails, but otherwise it gives results quite satisfactory for control pur- poses. Empirical methods for determining oxidized forms of zinc and lead have been proposed, but they are generally unsatisfactory except in isolated cases of a very simple ore. No published procedure for determining oxidized forms of cobalt or siinilar elements has come to the authors'notice. Experimental Procedure There are obviously two alternatives in attacking a problem of this nature. One is to employ a solvent for oxide cobalt that will not dissolve cobalt sulphide. The other is to find a substance capable of oxidizing the cobalt sulphide to sulphate, which of course is water-soluble and can then be leached from the water-insoluble oxide cobalt. A representative sample of Rhokana cobalt oxide ore was secured, ground to minus 200-mesh, and carefully rolled to furnish a standard sample for this work. The analysis of this material gave the following percentages: Co, 0.55; Cu, 1.64; Fe, 2.98; S, 0.08; SiO2, 41.42; Al2o3, 11.20; CaO, 13.82; MgO, 3.80. As a source of cobalt sulphide a similar large sample of carrollite was prepared, analyzing Co, 23.36 per cent; Cu, 27.32; and S, 31.13. This sample of course was not pure carrollite, but was the best obtainable in quantities sufficient for a standard intended for considerable work. It was a pure sulphide sample, microscopic examination showing only carrollite, a little bornite, and gangue, with no visible sign of oxidized ore present. THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. THE geophysical methods of exploration employed so extensively in mining and petroleum investigations are now being used in civil engineering. Requirements differ from those of mineral ex- ploration and therefore modified techniques have been developed. The civil engineer is primarily interested in the uppermost soil and rock strata. In highway engineering the materials affecting design and construction may be found within 15 or 20 ft of ground surface, and data on soils and rocks is seldom needed for more than a depth of 100 ft even for the heaviest structures.

THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

The general energy equation, including change in kinetic energy, was solved by numerical integration and used to evaluate simplifying assumptions and application practices over a wide range of conditions. When extreme conditions were encountered, sizable errors were caused by large integration intervals, application of Simpson's rule and neglecting change in kinetic energy. A maximum error of only 1.31 percent was caused by assuming temperature and compressibility constants at their average value. It was discovered that a discontinuity can develop in the integral for the injection case. This discontinuity indicates a point of zero pressure change and is an inflection point in the pressure traverse. INTRODUCTION When a pressure in a gas well is to be calculated, one of the first decisions is to select a method of calculation. In many instances, this selection becomes a problem because the literature, at best, provides an evaluation of any method for only a limited range of conditions. Once a method has been selected, a question often arises as to the size of the calculation interval which should be used. The question regarding calculation interval arises because an analytic solution is not obtainable and approximate solutions must be used. This paper presents an evaluation of major assumptions and application practices of probably the two most widely used methods for calculating steady-state single-phase gas well pressures. The two methods are Cullender and Smith1-" (numerical integration), and average temperature and com-pressibility. The Cullender-Smith method assumes that change in kinetic energy is negligible and is normally applied in two steps with a Simpson's rule correcton. The average temperature and compressibility method, in addition to neglecting kinetic energy change, asumes that temperature and compressibility are constant at their average values. This method is normally applied for wellhead shut-in pressures of less than 2,000 psi, and in one step. Computer programs were written to compute bottom-hole pressure with and without the assumptions, using various approaches. Values of input parameters investigated are shown in Table 1. Flow rate was limited to a maximum of 5,000 and 10,000 Mcf/D for tubing sizes of 1.610 and 1.995 in. ID, respectively. Flow rate was also limited to 10,000 Mcf/D for a tubing size of 2.441 in. ID when wellhead flowing pressure was 100 psia. These limitations were imposed on flow rate so as not to exceed sonic velocity. The z factor routine available necessitated limiting bottom-hole temperature to 240F and wellhead pressure to 3,000 psia. Pressures were compared on the basis of percent deviation from the trapezoidal integration of Eq. l or 2 at 100-ft intervals. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1,000-ft interval solution would differ from a 50-ft interval solution by less than 0.25 percent; therefore, the 100-ft interval was chosen for a base. For the purpose of comparison, deviations less than 1 percent were considered insignificant. where 111.1 qeC2/d p = kinetic energy term. Pulverized coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the dificulties incident to the burning of coal. In a. cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverizeti in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. Process of Burning Cement Clinkers The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output, This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,' in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. The data given in the paper were collected to furnish an idea of the amount required in various operations of bituminous mining to produce a ton of coal, the plants selected being well-managed ones. With these are included some figures compiled from U. S. Coal Commission's report showing the average amount of labor in various classes of mines. THE information contained in the following paper was collected at the request of the U. S. Coal Commission, and is, published with the permission of that body and of the various companies furnishing the data. For obvious reasons, the names of the companies are not given. No data were gotten from States south of Virginia or west of the Mississippi River. The data about the amount of labor, in man-hours, required in producing a ton of bituminous coal have been collected with the idea of showing what is being done at some well-managed plants, and not to show the average amount required by all mines, which undoubtedly is considerably higher than the average of the figures shown.* Almost all of the figures were supplied by the various companies in reply to a questionnaire; when they were obtained from other sources the company was asked to verify them. On account of the amount of work required, the data were only requested for one or two months for each plant, and the figures represent in each case a month when the car supply was good and the work was practically steady. In the case of most of the West Virginia and Kentucky mines, these conditions were best met in May and June, 1922. The mines for which the figures are given are arranged by states and as to whether the mine operates under union or non-union or open-shop conditions. The union mines listed are generally considered to be as well-managed as are the non-union ones. The production per month in a few cases includes the amount of slate which is loaded and hauled out of the mine, as of course this requires nearly as much labor per ton as does the coal. It would be a difficult matter to trace from the beginning the very few improvements made in the burning of fuels prior to 1860. Donbtless the crossing of the sticks of wood in building a mood fire early appealed to our savage ancestry as a means of expediting its effectiveness for their crude culinary purposes. Stones and andirons came later in assisting the admission of air to the under part of the fuel bed, while beacons and cressets, utilized metal bars as supports for the same purpose. It is probable that Tuba1 Cain owed his success to the use of bellows making possible the use of mixed fuel and charge upon a hearth. With the development of working in cast iron, grate bars came in, and they are still with us doing duty in every household and almost every art where heat is a factor. Little was done beyond these crude methods prior to 1860. With the advancement of knowledge came the fuel-gas producer, a natural child of the retorts employed in supplying illuminating gas. It is only within the last 15 years that the conclusion became general that complicated systems for saving heat would not remedy deli-. ciencies in its primary development, and within that time there has been great advancement in the means of producing initially a fire of high effciency, so that to-day we are moving rapidly toward both high development and high absorption, with the resultant of high efficiencies. In studying the subject of the availability of pulverized coal as a fuel, it may occur to ask, why has this not come up earlier? This, question would be naturally prompted by recalling the fact that Thomas Crompton's English patents upon his methods were issued to him nearly 40 years ago. A conclusive answer to this, however, is that Crompton at that time had very crude facilities for making what was at best a very imperfect pulverization of the coal, arid the expense of preparation mas very great. He does not seem to have been aware of the advantage of a thorough drying of the coal in the

THE revision of this chapter has presented a problem in that heavy-medium jigging has come into the picture since the chapter was originally written (seven years ago), a practice in which an artificial medium is built up and maintained in the jig circuit. As this development makes the jig a "true" heavy-medium process, the method belongs in the chapter dealing with such processes. Although putting this development in its proper position in the book involves some repetition, this seems to be the best procedure, and it has been followed. As the chapter on jigs in its original form was intended to be more or less a handbook on jigging for the use of the practical man, and the great bulk of the material therein is still generally applicable, the text has been re-used in large measure. Two major changes should be noted: (1) the portion of the text relating to the refuse-withdrawing mechanism of the McNally-Pittsburg jig has been entirely rewritten, and (2) a description of the hutch valves on the Jeffrey jigs has been added. Jigging is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through 3/4-in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems.

THROUGH circumstances connected with the war, the senior author lost his records, therefore it has been impossible to include numerical data in this paper. The arsenical quicksilver ore investigated had been roasted, with poor metallurgical results. The vapor-tension temperature curves of mercury and arsenious trioxide are similar, and the arsenical compound hampers the coalescence of mercury drops in the condenser and is the cause of large stack losses. The ore was a gray limestone carrying small amounts of carbon and mineralized with cinnabar and two arsenic minerals, realgar (As2S2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). The proportion of realgar often exceeded that of cinnabar; the proportion of arsenopyrite was smaller. The grade of the ore varied between 0.8 and 4 per cent Hg. The problem was to make a high-grade mercury concentrate, as free from arsenic as possible. The water used throughout the testing was hard, having a pH of about 8. FLOTATION OF REALGAR Realgar showed a very strong tendency to float. It formed a film at the surface of the pulp and floated in abundance with only pine oil. Therefore an attempt was made to float the realgar before the cinnabar, but this was not very successful; the percentage of mercury in the realgar concentrate could never be brought below 2 or 3 per cent. Cinnabar slimed easily and floated with pine oil, so that some of it always accompanied the realgar. There was also the question of the cinnabar-arsenopyrite separation. On further investigation it was found that realgar can be floated not only with pine oil but even better with a combination of hydrocarbons and pine oil. Washing the ore with ether revealed that it contained hydrocarbons, which helped to float the realgar. In this connection it belongs to the same class as carbon, sulphur and talc. It can be floated also with a xanthate, when activated by a heavy-metal salt. The conditions favoring the two types of flotation are opposed, as activation by a copper salt facilitates xanthate flotation (in fact, is even necessary to it), whereas it hinders pine oil and petroleum flotation. One type of flotation can be termed nonpolar and the other polar, a distinction that has been stressed in a previous paper.1 DEPRESSION OF REALGAR AND FLOTATION OF CINNABAR 'Many chemicals were tested in an attempt to float the cinnabar and depress the realgar. Finally starch rendered soluble with caustic soda was tried, also several grades of commercial soluble starch, and dextrin was found to be the best and the most convenient reagent. Several of these starch preparations have a strong flocculating effect on the pulp, which is a distinct disadvantage. Dextrin, with its low flocculating power, is excellent. THE number and severity of surface imperfections on rolled slabs, assuming the reception of uniformly good quality heats from the open hearths, depend upon a number of conditions associated with heating and rolling of steel in the primary mills. While there are other elements that have an effect on surface quality, rather than make this paper too lengthy the discussion of mill processing variables will be limited to three factors in order to illustrate their effect on slab surface quality: 1—amount of reduction between ingot and slab, 2—slab finishing temperatures, and 3—influence of roll changes. Measurement of the percentage of surface removed by scarfing on the flat surfaces of the slabs was used for evaluating quality in this study. A study of this nature must be made on slabs that are inspected and conditioned under uniform conditions and standards. In order to be certain that steel of the best possible steelmaking quality was received at the rolling mills, a low carbon deep drawing grade of rimmed steel, made for sheet mill application and manufactured under carefully controlled open hearth practices, was selected. Use of this particular steel thereby reduced the steel quality factor as a possible source of variation. The measure of slab surface quality is the amount of surface removed by scarfing during yard conditioning and is expressed as percentage of surface removal. This percentage was estimated by experienced personnel to uniform standards and it should be noted that these percentage figures are representative only for the grade selected and under the rigid inspection standards to which the slabs were subjected. Surface removal is a matter of concern because the imperfections, if undetected, often are the cause of poor surface quality in the finished product and their removal, by conditioning, add to the total plant costs. The data was collected at various times over a period of six months and, with normal weekly fluctuation in the level of quality, it is to be expected that for any period of sampling there will be some variation in the plotted results. The type of defect that is responsible for most slab conditioning at Gary Steel Works is a light angular surface break. This defect is usually interconnected to form large defective areas and occurs mainly on the bottom half of the slab on both sides. This type of defect is illustrated in Fig. 1, showing a bottom portion of a slab; while a close-up of an area of the same slab where the surface breaks were found is given in Fig. 2. The large dark areas are heat patterns, results of hot stacking and cooling. Independent of these light breaks, but sometimes associated with them, are larger and deeper isolated breaks. However, most of the surface removal occurs from conditioning the large areas of small breaks. There are also occasional scabs of varying degrees of severity but these are relatively infrequent. The slabs are generally free of rolled-in scale. Ingot to Slab Reduction vs Quality Some ten years ago at Gary Steel Works, the minimum slab ingot thickness was 30 in. Subsequent operating and other quality features indicated the desirability of using an ingot of reduced thickness with the result that a series of molds that would produce a 22 in. thick ingot with various widths was adopted as standard. A minimum number of the thicker mold sets are still used. From the standpoint of quality difficulties from pipe and segregation, the smaller ingots are an improvement. From a quality surface viewpoint, the slab product from the thin molds requires approximately twice the surface removal as the slab product from the thick molds. They let the whole world know again that not only could we do it, but we make it look easy. The great crews before Scott, Irwin and Worden of Apollo 15 have all blended warm humor, informality and dexterity to put on a good show: but it keeps getting better and the last one was the best. Scott's rendition of Galileo's experiment using a hammer and a feather--not just any feather, but a falcon feather after the name of the LEM-was priceless. One generation of school kids will never forget that lesson. The final touch was in the "would-you-believe''" category, Now if English astronauts had been performing the mission, the sign-off would have been typically low key. Something like; "well its tea time, chaps; we'll have to toddle along." Apollo 15 surprised and thrilled spectators by blasting off to the Air Force song "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" and leaving a camera behind to photograph their own ascent. Now that is what we call showmanship. There is another aspect to our space show and that is that it cost billions of dollars to put on. With that kind of backing, the world for an audience and in the face of grave personal risk, one would expect the space explorers to be all business. Instead they did their jobs with limpid buoyancy. Our older readers will recall and contrast a movie of the thirties and the tense atmosphere when they had to talk that kid up there (Franchot Tone) down through the zero ceiling. A feat of considerably less difficulty than docking LEM. but nevertheless the gut tightening drama was absent in the latter event. In another example, few of us can visualize reporting back after a business mission to one of the old barons such as J. P. Morgan in any but the most sedate and business-like terms. In fact we don't have to go that far back, as we can think of a few pepper-pot bosses we have had to whom one always played it straight.

WORK was initiated several years ago at The Dow Chemical Company to determine the applicability of powder metallurgy processes to magnesium and its alloys. Although it was found possible to apply the normal techniques of compacting and sintering, it was discovered early that the technique of extrusion offered special promise. This technique and the alloys produced were therefore studied extensively, and the present paper is a partial report of those studies. It is expected that a second paper will discuss more extensively some of the alloy systems simply mentioned here. Although the literature on powder metallurgy is very extensive, there are only two articles dealing with magnesium13,14 and there is no reference to the direct extrusion of the powder of any metal without the preliminary step of compacting. Furthermore, no mention has been made of the possibility of designing alloys by the technique of powder extrusion, particularly alloys that cannot be made in any other way. Sauerwaldl3 discusses the extrusion of magnesium and aluminum powder to produce alloys containing nonequilibrium phases, but again he emphasizes the importance of pre-compacting before extrusion. There seems to be general agreement that some form of hot-pressing is essential to obtain in a compact the full theoretical density of the metal used.'-" The nearest approach to the technique of direct powder extrusion is that of extrusion of pre-sintered compacts,'-" for which the best review through 1944 is that by Kieffer and Hotop.11 Ensign* discussed a specialized technique of "extruding" already compacted and sintered gears for the purpose of sizing. Sauerwa1d13 discussed the compacting and extrusion of magnesium and magnesium-aluminum alloy band-saw chips. The properties of the extruded compacts were found to be comparable with those of extrusions prepared from solid billets. He also extruded a compacted mixture of magnesium and aluminum powder and found the properties to be somewhat different from those obtained on an extrusion made from a cast billet of the same composition. The second reference dealing specifically with the powder metallurgy of magnesium is Stern's patent," in which is described the extrusion of scrap chips and turnings following a hot-pressing and sintering step. Considerable emphasis in most of these articles is placed on the necessity of atmospheric protection to minimize the danger of oxidation. WHEN I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in 1916-that is, about 25 years ago-in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father ¬Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother-Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature. is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable, tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. Somewhat later, in introducing a discussion of the phase rule, which "it would be hardly proper to pass . . . by without an attempt to outline its meaning," for "a clear exposition of its applicability or jurisdiction is needed to restrain the half-initiated from misusing it and the uninitiated from being misled by these misuses," he writes-and I quote his statement because we cannot properly discuss the influence of time on a process until we know the state of equilibrium which would ultimately be reached by the system under consideration It is a most remarkable and valuable generalization, its conceptions help greatly toward getting a broad outlook on metallography, but its misconception has brought out a flood of obscuring writings. It tells us about the constitution towards which alloys tend, that which they reach when equilibrium is complete, when all tendencies have corrected themselves and have been complied with completely. Its application, in absence of true equilibrium, is like determining density with a telescope or even with a tuning fork; it is like the mad tea party at which the butter put into the works "f the watch was the best butter.
