Externally generated foam was injected continuously into short porous media. Both flow rate and pressure drop were measured. Liquid saturation was determined by electrical conductivity. Foam yuality I, expressed as the ratio of gas volume to total volume, was varied from 0.70 to 0.96. As measured with a modified fann VG Meter, apparent viscosity of this foam µa decreases with increasing shear rate but usually falls within the range of 50 to 500 cp. At a given shear rate, µa increases almost linearly with I-. When measured with a Bendix Ultraviscoson, kinematic pa is independent of V but absolute pa increases with T from about 3 to 8 cp. The effective permeability -apparent viscosity ratio ke/µa decreases almost linearly with V for porous media of high permeability, but the rate of decrease becomes less for tighter ones. The relative permeability-apparent viscosity ratio kr/µa us V data does not fall on a single line. The kr/µa ratio increases with liquid saturation in the porous medium and with surfactant concentration. Estimates of pa for foam in porous media vary from 30 to 100 cp. INTRODUCTION Although research on the development of a foam-drive, oil recovery process has been going on for almost a decade, most of the significant publications have appeared within the last several years. This illustrates well the rate at which interest in this process is accelerating. Bond and Holbrook 1 were the first to describe the use of foam to improve oil recovery in their patent of 1958. They proposed that an aqueous foaming agent slug be injected into the formation and that this be followed by gas to produce a foam in situ. Fried 2 studied the injection of foam into porous media which had already been subjected to conventional gas or water drives and found that gas could be used to drive a foam bank which would, in turn, displace additional oil in the form of an oil bank. He attributed the increased oil recovery to the high effective viscosity of foam flowing in porous media. His microscopic observations showed the importance of foam generation and regeneration within the porous medium. By injecting both air and aqueous surfactant solution, Bernard3 generated foams within the porous medium in which oil displacement was being studied. In a separate empirical test, he also measured the dynamic foaming characteristics of the same surfactants in water and/or oil. With some exceptions and for the seyen surfactants studied, there seems to be a qualitative relationship between the efficiency of liquid rlisplacrment and the dynamic foaming testtsed. This relationship was not consistent enough to eliminate the necessity of actual foam flood tests in porous media for surfactant selection. In a study basic to gas storage in aquifers, Bennett4 described the displacement of brine by foam in consolidated porous media. Among other things, he stated that the ability of a surfactant solution to foam is more important than the stability of its foam. The presence of a foam bank between the displacing air and the displaced brine improved both breakthrough and ultimate recovery. In a continuation of this work Kolb5 attributed the great reduction in surfactant solution production rate as displacement by air progressed to a decrease in relative permeability to gas. These several effects reported by both Bennett and Kolb can all be attributed to the high apparent viscosity of foam which was obviously flowing in the porous media. Bernard and Holm6 observed that gas permeability in the presence of foam was much less than in the absence of foam when both were measured at the same gas saturations. This reduction in permeability was proportionately greater for more permeable sands and sandstones than for the less permeable. Viscosities of the surfactant solution and air were used for their calculations rather than apparent foam viscosities. The foam stability increased with decreasing permeability, which was probably due to the natural regenerative properties of porous media, and the permeability reduction increased

TWO papers, "Calcium, Strontium, and Barium Metals," by Charles Hardy and Paul M. Tyler, and "The Mining of Gems and Ornamental Stones by American Indians," by Sydney H. Ball, were presented before the Rare Minerals and Metals group at its session Tuesday afternoon in the Auditorium. Donald M. Liddell, chairman, presided. Mr. Tyler summarized the first paper, outlining the uses, history, occurrence, manufacture, production and trade, markets and prices of the three metals. In discussion, in response to the chairman's query on "what are they doing in Russia with calcium, strontium, and barium," Guy C. Riddell replied that nothing is being done on a production basis. The great rare metals plant in Moscow is active, however, on other elements. "They are making radium chloride, uranium oxide, vanadium, cadmium, tungsten, molybdenum, selenium, antimony compounds; and mercury, nickel and arsenic are under production at interior plants. The rare metals plant is busily conducting research on beryllium, rhenium, lithium, bismuth, strontium and zirconium. These are the main rare metal activities. The report describes scaled model experiments on the recovery of oil from porous sands by the injection of miscible liquids [solvents] and the subsequent recovery of the solvents by water flooding. Special attention has been paid to the scaling problem. Scaling rules are deduced and their correctness is checked by carrying out experiments in tubes of various sizes. Data are submitted on the effect of the viscosity ratio oil-solvent on the efficiency of the displacement process, the viscosity ratio varying from 1.5 to 5,000. Breakthrough recoveries obtained when flooding with kerosene as a solvent, are equal to those obtained in water flooding at the same viscosity ratio, indicating that he phenomenon of viscous fingering is decisive. After breakthrough, however, flooding with a miscible liquid becomes much more efficient than a water flood and this is more pronounced as the viscosity ratio oil-solvent is higher. Although high oil recoveries are obtained and most of the solvent in the sand can be recovered by a subsequent waterdrive, a straight flood with miscible liquids does not appear economically attractive because of the large quantities of solvent required. Therefore, a circulation process is introduced, the features of which are described in this paper. Though by means of this circulation process the amount of solvent required can be drastically reduced, the process is not yet economic. SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION The recovery efficiency by water flood of oils of viscosities exceeding 50 cp is low. As interest in production of these highly viscous oils is growing at the moment, it was considered worthwhile to gain basic information on the feasibility of first flooding such oils with a low viscous miscible liquid [solvent] and subsequently producing the latter in a conventional way, e.g. by water flooding. The method has the obvious drawbacks that return on the investment is delayed until water flooding has begun and that it requires the investment of a more valuable product to produce a less valuable one. On the other hand, it may be expected that the displacement of one liquid by another is more efficient when the two liquids are miscible than when they are immiscible. As laboratory data on this point are scanty, the present investigation seemed justified. Another argument for carrying out these experiments is that they present a valuable contribution to our concepts of the scaling problem in reservoir engineering studies. Some major difficulties which are encountered in the scaling of the waterflooding process such as the scaling of the capillary forces and the difficulty of obtaining the same permeability characteristics in the model do not present themselves in this case. As the fluids are miscible capillary forces do not play a role and as there is only one fluid phase, Darcy's law is valid in its original form. Consequently it is felt that the scaling rules can be deduced with a greater amount of certainty. ROBERT VAN ARSDALE NORRIS, who died at his home at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on April 20, 1928, was born at Newark, N. J., on May 2, 1864, of parents who were direct descendants of such sterling New Eng-landers as Governor William Bradford, John Alden and Timothy Dwight. He went to the Collegiate School in New York and then to the Colum-bia School of Mines where he graduated with the class of 1885, having among class-mates A. S. Dwight, E. N. En-gelhardt, H. L. Hollis, G. B. Lee, Richard Moldenke, Wil-bur Sanders, Joseph Struth-ers, E. A. Wiltsee, and I. H. Woolson. His marked ability even among so many men of unusual ability caused him to be chosen as assistant to Pro- fessor Munroe in the summer school of mining and survey-ing immediately after gradua-tion, and he shortly after was also inspector of dredging operations on the Maurice River improvement work, Millville, N. J. The follow- ing year he worked in the chemical laboratory of Herman Behr in Brooklyn, and toward the end of 1886 he joined the staff of the Pennsylvania R. R. Coal Co. and the Susquehanna Coal Co. as assistant engineer. Six years later he was made principal assistant en- gineer and in 1900 he was made chief engineer of these companies. In 1904, he withdrew from them and estab- lished an office as a consulting engineer at Wilkes- Barre, later taking his son, Robert V., Jr., into partner- ship with him. They acted as consulting engineers for the coal department of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western R. R. Co., the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., Coke Bros. & Go., Inc., the coal department of the Pennsyl- vania R. R. Co., the Wilkes-Barre & Hazelton R. R. Co., the Sterling Salt Co., and others, specializing in ex- amination and appraisal of coal properties, and also matters of Federal taxation.

Empirical equations for surface tension of propane and normal butane as functions of reduced temperature are obtained from experimental data. Another correlation relating surface tension to enthalpy of vaporization is given for these two compounds. In addition, new paracbor numbers are calculated for the normal paraffin hydrocarbons. These numbers are utilized for the calculation of interfacial tension of two-component systems as functions of pressure and temperature, using a modified form of Weinaug-Katz equation. The experimental data for two binary systems are approximated by the correlation. From these results it is found that the interfacial tension in the high-pressure region remains extremely low at large pressure decrements below the critical pressure. Thus, it appears that condensate systems may have flow characteristics almost like single-phase conditions even though the pressure is within the two-phase region. Experimental data have shown that interfacial tension divided by density difference approaches zero as the critical pressure is approached. A calculation of wetting-phase saturations indicates that the saturation gradient at the two-phase contact becomes increasingly abrupt as the critical pressure is approached. DISCUSSION Prediction of the surface and interfacial tension of the light hydrocarbons and of two-component hydrocarbon mixtures at various temperatures and pressures may be made if other physical properties are known. Extensive experimental work on single-component and binary systemsl is the basis for the correlations outlined in this paper. Interfacial tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phases of unlike fractional composition, while surface tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phase:; of the same fractional composition. The usual definitions relating interfacial tension to a liquid-liquid interface and surface tension to a gas-liquid interface are not clearly defined when the critical region is included, and there is no sharp distinction between a gas and a liquid phase. Interfacial tension is probably the most important single force that makes one-half to one-third of the total oil actually in place in a reservoir rock unrecoverable by conventional gas-drive or waterflood methods. A rough estimate of this figure for the United States is 100 billion bbl. Interfacial tension presently is used by petroleum engineers in the estimation of saturation gradients at the gas-oil contact and at the oil-water contact. The data in this paper should prove useful for estimates of reserves involving gas-oil contacts. Relative permeability undoubtedly is influenced by interfacial tension, for sufficiently small values. These data should be useful in determining how small the values are In addition, these data should eventually add to our fundamental knowledge of surfaces. At the critical point, all surface excesses approach zero and the thickness becomes very large. SINGLE-COMPONENT SYSTEMS It has been observed1 that the following relationships are good approximations to the physical properties of propane and n-butane.

THE existence of large saline deposits in that flat arid basin, known as the Great Salt Lake Desert, has long been recognized, but the extent and great commercial value of these deposits has not been generally appreciated. That a very considerable interest has recently developed is indicated by the fact that about 263 prospecting permits-each covering about 2560 acres of land in this Desert-have been issued under the Potash Leasing Act (Act of 0ct. 2, 1917-40 Stat. 297), and patents granted on approximately 40,000 acres. It is reported that patents and leases have, or will be applied for on an additional 80,000 acres in the basin. , Tests have been made on probably less than 10 per cent. of the total area of the basin, but these have proved a practically unlimited supply of brine available -sufficient, probably, to. furnish the potassium and magnesium chloride requirements of this country for at least a hundred years.

Though coal has been mined in this country for more than a century, no systematic effort was ever successfully made to ascertain the total amount produced. The production of the Cumberland Basin, Md., and the shipments from the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, have been placed upon record, thanks to the intelligence and foresight of Mr. C. Slack in the former case, and to the late Mr. B. Bannan in the latter. For some of the years between 1822 and 1842, the production of the Richmond Basin was reported by Mr. R. C. Taylor, but since that date till the author undertook this work it was impossible to obtain any statement of the production of this field. A few of the newer fields, such as that of Mt. Diablo, Cal., have been fully reported, and a few of the newer States have also had this service performed by some intelligent private individuals; but no statistics of coal production have ever been collected either by the State or General Government, if we except the returns for the years 1869—70 of the census report. During the year 1875, by great exertions, I succeeded in obtaining, and July 3d, 1875, gave in the Engineering and Mining Journal what, " though not an accurate statement of our coal production," was " by far the most full and reliable that had ever been published." Though that report showed the production of bituminous coal to be 23,630,094 gross tons, or about six million tons more than had ever before been reported, it was in reality two and a half million tons below the actual output. Modern advances in practically all lines of industrial develo1)ment have occurred in such rapid succession, and have been accepted so readily as accomplished facts, that a retrospect surprises us, by showing how comparatively few of the acknowledged factors of improved conditions may be considered as old. While these advances have not been confined to any country, they have been more pronounced in some than in others, and nowhere more so than in the United States, the population of which, having multiplied nearly three-fold between 1870 and 1910, demanded a proportionately greater increase in materials, supplies, and manufactured products. It therefore appears desirable to discuss mainly conditions in the United States, as concrete evidence of industrial progress throughout the world. Looking backward for but three generations, me mar trace the introduction and developmerit of canal- and steamboat-narigation ; railroad-transportation; artificial illumination beyond that f'urnished by candles and animal-oils; quick communication by mail, and subsequently by telegraph or telephone; the manufacture of iron, beyond forms of small dimensions; the production and utilization of steel in large quantities; the economic use of mineral fuel, oil and gas, etc. The practical coincidence of the fortieth anniversary and the 100th technical meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, offers temptation to recall and compare the conditions of milling and metallurgy in or about the years 1871 .and 1911. A complete résumé would cover phenomenal changes in mining-methods and equipment by which the output of individual exploitations has grown from scores to hundreds and even thousands of units in equal time-intervals. Forty-three years ago a record for low cost was made at the Spanish mine, in Nevada county, California. In 22 days of September, 1887, there was mined 2796 tons of ore at a cost of 37.5 cents per ton, of which 32.4 cents was for labor and 5.1 cents for supplies. The mill treated this ore for 23 cents per ton, of which 12.3 cents was for labor and 10.7 cents for supplies. Thus the total operating cost was 60.5 cents per ton. The yield was $1.16 in gold per ton, leaving a profit of 56 cents per ton, or 48 per cent of the yield. The mine was an open-cut in a schist formation on a hillside and the work was done by Chinese laborers that were paid $1.40 per shift. The ore was soft, and could be ground effectively in four Hunting- ton mills, supplemented by silvered amalgamating plates.* The engineer in charge was F. W. Bradley, a student from the University of California. As has been indicated, the conditions were unusually favorable in respect of softness of ore, accessibility to the mill, metallurgic simplicity, with cheap labor and power, but even at that the results were so remark- able as to attract general attention, which, as might be expected, was magnified, for advertising purposes, by the manufacturers of the Huntington mill, the firm of Parke & Lacy, at San Francisco. The record made at the Spanish mine therefore found its way into many textbooks on mining published at that time. The editor of the 'Mining and Scientific Press'† (at that date, Charles G. An investigation, conducted by the author, was begun in September, 1889, by the United States Geological Survey, having for its object the study of the questions bearing upon the occurrence and manner of formation of the deposits of lead- and zinc-ores in Missouri and the adjoining States. The field-work was completed in December, 1891. During the first season the State Geological Survey of Missouri furnished an assistant, and in other ways co-operated in the research within the boundaries of that State. In order that the ore-deposits of the southwest might be compared with those of other sections of the Mississippi valley, an examination was made of the lead- and zinc-mining area of Wisconsin-Iowa, and of the argentiferous lead-mines of the region extending westward from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Indian Territory. In the discussion of the general geology, and in comparisons between the ore-deposits of the Mississippi valley and those of the Rocky Mountains, the writer has drawn largely from his personal experience, having been engaged for many years in professional work as a geologist and mining engineer in that region. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Scate Geologist of Missouri have kindly consented to the publication of the present paper. While giving the more important economic results, an endeavor has been made to set forth the unity of plan which appears in the formation of the deposits of lead and zinc of the Mississippi basin, and to show their relation to the argentiferous ores of the Rocky Mountains—that the ores of gold, silver, and mercury, and also of copper, antimony, zinc, and lead, have a universal common origin, irrespective of the geological formations in which they occur.

Many basic engineering principles of all four phases of mining operations, namely, prospecting, exploration, development, and exploitation, can be analyzed better in terms of quantitative geology. Geological data from both field and laboratory will also complement scientific methods now being developed. THE geological data emphasized so successfully in prospecting for new deposits, that is, structural controls, strength of solutions, and type of mineralization, are basically those required for successful exploitation. In the mining of newly discovered deposits the most economical methods should be employed as early as possible to keep the overall cost per unit produced at a minimum and to permit maximum extraction of valuable minerals. A crucial question is: How can geological data be translated into useful quantitative results which will aid in achieving this end? H. E. McKinistry' has suggested that a solution may be reached in one of two ways: 1—the usual approach, use of judgment based on experience; or 2—mathematical calculations and tests on models, both subject to certain limitations. He also suggests that in addition to better use of geology more case data and theoretical data are needed on which to base sound judgment. Further research, therefore, is necessary. Perhaps in this field the emphasis should be on more specialization in mining methods and ground movement by men with thorough training in physics, engineering, geology, and underground mining. These specialists would be equipped to point out the most economical and scientific methods of exploitation. Selection of a stoping method is governed by the amount and type of support a deposit will require in the process of being mined, or by the possibility of employing the structure of the deposit to advantage in mining the ore by a caving method. In addition to these factors there are others which almost invariably influence the choice of an economical method of mining:' 1—strength of ore and wall rocks; 2—shape, horizontal area, volume, and regularity of the boundaries of the orebody, and thickness, dip and/or pitch of the deposit and individual ore shoots; 3—grade, distribution of minerals, and continuity of the ore within the boundaries of the deposit; 4—depth below surface and nature of the capping or overburden: and 5—position of the de- posit relative to surface improvements, drainage, and other mine openings. In the final analysis it is usually necessary to disregard the less important of these factors to satisfy the requirements of the more important. Because of the variation of geological conditions throughout and surrounding the deposit, no mining method will be everywhere ideally applicable to the conditions encountered in one ore deposit. The immediate problem is to interpret the above physical characteristics of deposits in terms of geological characteristics. Very few quantitative geological data are available on the factors related to a choice of mining methods. However, there are many descriptive data in mining and geological literature which collectively show how important an effect details of geology have upon all phases of mining operations. The following categories of basic mining methods were investigated to establish the geological factors that have affected their successful application: 1— open stopes with pillars; 2—sublevel stoping; 3— shrinkage stoping; 4—cut-and-fill stoping; 5— square-set mining; 6—top slicing and sublevel caving; and 7—block caving. It should be noted that the first five of these methods are listed in the order of increasing support requirements. Mines were selected as examples only where geological descriptions were complete enough to warrant their use. A study of the geological factors involved in mining operations led to a choice of the following classifications, employed in Table I: 1—structural type of orebody; 2—dimensions (geometry); 3— country rock (type); 4—faulting, folding, and fracturing; 5—alteration of ore and rock; 6—type of mineralization; and 7—geological factors determining mining method (summary). Of these factors only one yielded results that can be defined from available data in a quantitative manner, i.e., dimensions of the deposit. These are the most reliable guides that can be used in selection of suitable mining methods. They are, in general, the properties of geologic structure most difficult to evaluate by studies of models, pho-toelastic studies, and other laboratory methods, all of which are at present more limited in their applications than the geologic method. COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion-equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control. For the present purpose a number of factors important to efficient heat liberation and recovery have been grouped as follows: 1—combustion, temperatures, and rates of heat liberation; 2—radiation, convection, and furnace and boiler configuration; 3—sponge ash, slag, and hard-bonded deposits; 4— low-temperature deposits and corrosion (cooling flue gas below dew point and air-pollution control); 5—the limitations of coal cleaning and boiler size and cost as related to fuel characteristics; 6—future possibilities and conclusions. The development of combustion apparatus for power boilers is progressing at a lively pace. There has been no letup in improvements in design of pulverized-coal-fired boilers, and there is a strong trend at present toward improving dry-bottom units. Spreader stokers with overfire jets and dust collectors as standard equipment are gaining favor. Less than 10 years in commercial use, cyclone burners are going into numerous installations here' and abroad.' Underfeed and traveling-grate stokers have long since been developed for heavy-duty operation, yet new developments in overfire jets and humidification of air blast have improved their performance. A water-cooled vibrating-grate stoker of German origin is being introduced into the United States and Canada." The primary objectives of an ideal coal combustion device are: capacity to burn the variety and sizes of coals likely to be economically available during the life of the unit; capacity to burn the coals automatically for a wide load range and rapid load fluctuations and to burn the coals completely to CO2, H2O, and SO2, which means without smoke and cinders, or carbon in the refuse; capacity to control and discharge all the ash in final granular form without ash adhesion to walls or tubes, and without flue dust; minimum furnace volume; minimum labor and maintenance; low initial and operating cost. Regardless of the method of burning, the gaseous products of coal combustion are N2, CO2, O2, H20, and SO?. By way of illustration, the coal analyses in Table I is assumed from an installation described by E. McCarthy.' When coal is burned with 20 pct excess air (theoretical air, 9.23 lb per lb of coal), the quantities of combustion gas shown in Table II are produced. In addition, the gases carry particles of fly ash, unconsumed cinders, soot particles, and small but significant amounts of vaporized oxides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, phosghorous, iron, and other metals. In recent years, germanium, one of the rare metals found in coal, has been shown to oxidize and vaporize at combustion temperatures and to be concentrated by reconden-sation at lower temperatures." Pulverized coal and cyclone flames" have peak temperatures of 3000' to 3500°F. Temperatures in fuel beds of large underfeed stokers reach maxima of 3000°F, sufficient to fuse almost any ash and to volatilize some of it. These peak temperatures are above the optimum necessary for rapid combustion, but they hasten heat transfer for ignition as well as boiler heat absorption. Furnace and gas temperatures increase with combustion air preheat. Low excess air has the same effect. Fine coal pulverization and highly turbulent combustion shorten the distance for fuel burnout, increase flame temperature, and speed up heat transfer. Rates of combustion of pulverized coal exceeding 200,000 Btu per cu ft per hr have been demonstrated in atmospheric gas-turbine combusters,

UNEMPLOYMENT is the most ominous shadow ahead of the industrial nations today. Only two great industrial countries are free from unemployment, France and the Soviet Commonwealth. In France the social unit is the family, not the individual. This has saved France. In the Soviet Commonwealth, development is proceeding so rapidly from agricultural to industrial that there is still a dearth of muscle workers in the non-agricultural enterprises. In the other industrial countries unemployment results both from acute temporary recession in industrial activities and from the rapidly increasing substitution of the machine for the man. Temporary recessions can be mitigated, alleviated by makeshifts, often ill considered. Secular recessions due to a fundamental change in the way of accomplishing physical, chemical results cannot be cured by any makeshift. There must be a period of transition. There is therefore before us the three- fold problem, immediate, prosimate and ultimate.

The effects of phase behavior on reservoir economics is a function of both fluid composition and flow properties of the reservoir rock. In some operations such as gas injection into volatile crude-oil resertoirs, the stock-tank recovery derived from vaporization of the reservoir oil by the displacing gas can approach the recovery derived from the displacement mechanism. In other cases of gas-cycling reservoirs, the dry injected gas can effectively vaporize a retrograde liquid phase, allowing a substantial reduction in cycling pressure with no appreciable loss in recoverable liquids. Because of these effects, it is essential that phase behavior be considered in developing the economics of any secondary recovery program in which gas is the injected fluid. The inclusion of phase behavior in conventional calculation procedures has been retarded because of the complexity of the calculation and the large volume of laboratory data required. However, by applying high-speed computers and new laboratory techniques, the phase-behavior displacement calculation has been developed to economically include this basic fundamental of gas displacement. The calculation is performed by reducing the reservoir to a series of one-dimensional segments. Phase changes, saturation distributions and changing fluid properties are evaluated for each segment as a function of time. The relative volumes of equilibrium liquid and gas displaced from each segment are determined by a trial-and-error procedure to meet the requirements of phase equilibrium and two-phase flow. The produced fluids are flashed through conditions of surface separation approximating those in the field to obtain actual values for stock-tank liquid recovery and producing gas-oil ratios. Based on the results of successful field studies, the technique appears to have application to reservoirs producing under a nonmiscible gas-displacement mechanism and should substantially increase the reliability of this type of analysis when phase behavior is an important factor. Predicting reservoir performance under gas-injection operations involves three basic principles of reservoir engineering. First, a material balance exists between the displacing gas and the displaced reservoir fluid. Second, the oil and gas flow in relationship with the two-phase flow property of the reservoir rock; and third, phase equilibrium exists between the displacing gas and the native reservoir fluid. To illustrate these three principles, consider the one-dimensional reservoir shown in Fig. 1. The reservoir is divided into a series of segments representing a one-dimensional cross section between an injection area and a producing area. So represents the oil saturation, Cw represents the connate-water saturation and Sg represents the displacing gas saturation. The gas is moving into Segment 1 and the reservoir oil is being produced out of Segment N. Consider the case when gas has just moved into Segment 1 and the displacing gas-oil contact is at position a-a The volume of oil pushed out of Segment 1 is a function only of mobility and the two-phase flow properties of the reservoir rock, that is, Kg/Ko and µo/µg. Behind the front if the injected gas is foreign to the reservoir oil (a nonequilibrium gas), there will either be vaporization of the oil into the gas or condensation of the gas into the oil. In either case the net result is a mass transfer and a re-distribution of composition and liquid and gas saturation. DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

This paper presents results obtained by consider ation of unstable miscible displacement within a porous medium as a quasi-turbulent displacement process, that is, a process characterized by fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. The instability usually results from the miscible displacing fluid having a viscosity lower than that of the displaced fluid. Such instability is evidenced in suitable experiments by the presence of viscous fingering. A unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement is derived. Parameters in the theory are obtained by empirical means. Although the theory describes an idealized conceptual model, agreement with experiment is quite reasonable up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1. INTRODUCTION Many experimental studies of miscible displacement in porous media have been conducted with prediction of reservoir displacement efficiency as the ultimate objective. Most such studies have utilized lower displacing than displaced fluid viscosity, scaled to potential reservoir fluid pairs. Theoretical approaches have been largely limited to unit viscosity ratios, however, in spite of the necessity for an understanding of the mechanism of the unstable, adverse viscosity ratio displacement process. An obvious reason is the difficulty of describing in mathematical form the viscous fingering characteristic of these conditions. Observation of experiments conducted with dyed fluids in transparent systems suggests an analogy between unstable miscible displacement and turbulent flow in a pipe. In both cases there are fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. An important difference is that flow behavior of interest in the porous medium is entirely transient, contained within a transition zone between displacing and displaced fluids. Transient behavior complicates description in that coefficients in the equations become variables rather than constants. In the study reported here, the analogy with turbulent flow has been used in treating unstable miscible displacement as a quasi-turbulent displacement process. The purpose has been to derive, even if restricted to an idealized conceptual model, a unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement. A relationship meeting these specifications up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1, is presented. One fluctuation parameter in the theory and dispersion coefficients are obtained by empirical means. The idealized theory is compared with experimental results. UNSTABLE MISCIBLE DISPLACEMENT AS QUASI-TURBULENT DARCY FLOW The miscible displacement of one fluid by another within a porous medium is considered in this study. Flow conditions are such that Darcy's law is applicable. It is further assumed that, by the stability criterion proposed by perrine,1 initial flow conditions lie well within the regime of instability. Thus substantial viscous fingering is assured. We wish to show how this flow regime can be represented as quasi-turbulent. That is, the Reynolds number for the established flow conditions is below that for inertial or turbulent flow within a porous medium, and lies within the regime for which Darcy's law is valid. Yet flow behavior can be described as the combination of some relatively simple average result, and characteristic fluctuations that are superimposed on the simpler behavior. Stated another way, flow behavior includes the movement of layers of fluids with different velocities past or over one another. Such descriptions are characteristic of turbulent pipe flow. The fluctuations in the present case are a direct consequence of the local viscous fingering which accompanies the unstable displacement process. Should displacement become stable, fluctuations would die out. It is of particular importance to note that fluctuations such as these can interact in a way that contributes to material transport by the basic flow. The basic transport equations required for engineering calculations must be modified to reflect this fact.

Scientists and engineers must concern themselves not only with technical problems, but with the socio-economic difficulties of our scciety. The author states that raw materials are basic to the economic process and that mineral raw materials occur naturally in nearly limitless quantities. He feels that the economic pocess will provide sufficient raw materials for man's needs, and discusses in some detail the world economic environment. As our society grows in complexity, it becomes more urgently incumbent upon scientists and engineers to bring their experiences to bear on the solution, not only of technical problems, but also on socio-economic difficulties. It is to this field that I have directed a large part of my energies. RAW MATERIALS BASIC TO THE ECONOMIC PROCESS There are certain premises, frequently overlooked, which bear emphasis. As economics concerns the production, distribution, and consumption of goods, so our whole society is based on raw materials. Without the basic extractive industries of agriculture and mining, there would be no economic problems with which to deal. This principle has been expressed as "All productivity is based on three factors: 1) natural resources, whose form, place, and condition are changed by the expenditure of 2) human energy (both muscular and mental), with the aid of 3) tools.77* It seems strange that such an obvious statement needs to be made. It is forgotten by all of us, however, at one time or another when we get involved in the complicated theories of economics dealing with the financial and fiscal policies of the various governments, in the financing of enterprises, in marketing, and in labor relations. Unless decisions in all of these fields are made with this, and the rest of the "Ten Pillars of Economic Wisdom," consciously in mind, the resultant policies are doomed to eventual failure, whether these are policies of individuals, companies, or governments. The economic process is basic to society. But economics and the social aspects of humanity are inevitably intertwined. If human needs are not provided for within the basic economic structure, conflicts arise to disrupt the most carefully laid social plans. Similarly, it is the failure of society to cope with basic economic prerequisites that leads to discord within the body politic and thus to eventual economic disaster. We who are engaged in the various aspects of the mineral industry, therefore, have a large part to play in society's future development. MINERAL RAW MATERIALS OCCUR NATURALLY IN NEARLY LIMITLESS QUANTITIES Throughout my career in and out of government, I have formed my decisions on two principles: 1) Fundamentally, all mineral raw materials exist within the earth's crust in quantities greatly exceeding man's needs; 2) Any problems of supply of these materials are primarily economic in nature. With respect to my first assumption, analyses by geochemists enable them to estimate the quantities in which each of the known elements exist in the earth's crust. One of the most cautious and famous suggests that the average copper content of the lithosphere to a depth of ten miles is about 55 ppm. If this is valid, then the lithosphere contains about 1.4 quadrillion (1.4 x 10 ") tons of copper metal — an unimaginable quantity. This is 8,500,000-fold that which has been consumed by man in his existence. To illustrate further, consider that the deepest copper mine in history went to about 9000 ft below the surface; the present copper mines of the world now average less than 1500 ft in depth. We can assume that in most continental land areas of the world it is technically feasible to mine to a depth of at least one mile. The land areas of the world to an average depth of one mile, then, contain 343 billion tons (343 x 10') of copper metal, or 2000 times that which has been extracted to date.
