History of Production, of Salt Creek Oil Field, Wyoming Discussion of the paper of EDWARD L. ESTASROOK and CLARENCE M. RADER, presented at the Casper Meeting of the Petroleum Division and issued, as Paper No. 1503-G, with MINING AND METALLURGY, September, 1925. C. E. REISTLE, Laramie, Wyo.-The application of water analysis to petroleum engineering problems is successful in many cases, particularly if the water in the sands is of uniform chemical constituency and if each sand water varies definitely from the others in its chemical properties. At Salt Creek, the sand waters are not of uniform chemical character, and the waters in the various sands do not differ greatly; so a water from one sand might easily be classified as a water from some other sand. The water from the Shannon sand contains sulfates; this alone makes it possible to differentiate between the Shannon and the First and Second Wall Creek and Lakota sands. However, it is not so easy to differentiate between water of the First and Second Wall Creek sands. As a rule, the Second Wall Creek sand contains a higher concentration of mineral matter, but in Table 19, sample 2; of the First Wall Creek sand and sample 7 of the Second Wall Creek sand have approximately the same amount of total solids. As a rule, the chlorides are higher in the Second sand waters than in the First sand; but, the chlorides in sample 6 of the Second sand show practically the same amount as sample 3 of the First sand. The use of reaction properties does not. solve this trouble, as they generalize the conditions even more. For instance, the reaction properties of sample 3 of the First sand are almost identical with the reaction properties of sample 6, of the Second sand. The authors suggest that the chemical characteristics of the water in a sand are not uniform because of the concentration of the water by underground evaporation. In that case should not the ratio of the various chemical constituents remain the same? Gas does remove some mineral matter, as evidenced by deposits in the gas lines and packing in the absorbers of the natural gasoline plants, but why does the gas act selectively, removing one salt and not all of the salts in the ratio that they occur?

THE works of The Boleo Mining Co. are situated at Santa Rosalia, Lower California, on the opposite side of the Gulf of California from Guaymas, the, nearest railroad town. The copper deposits were discovered in 1868, and the name Boleo arose from the fact that the ore particles were agglomerated as little balls of carbonate or oxychlorides of copper. When worked on. a small scale, only ore carrying 20 to 25 per cent copper was mined; this was shipped to Europe for reduction In 1884 The Boleo Mining Co. was organized and,-the mine put in condition. Even then, due to the low price of copper, only the richer ore continued to be shipped. To operate the mine successfully the company made radical changes in the methods of development and spent money freely for construction of adequate plants for the treatment of low-grade ore. Finally, the owners of the various adjacent mining claims combined their interests and formed a joint enterprise attractive to French capital.

The method of crushing rock by throwing with violence against a resisting surface does not differ in principle from the method of dropping it from a height upon a specially arranged surface. The former is applied in various mills now in use, especially those for reduction of the softer rocks and minerals. The latter is the principle of the Hadsel mill. Probably not new, but Hadsel's method of approach is at least novel, and applicable to hard as well as softer rocks. An elevating wheel raises the rock and drops it from a height upon a hard metal plate or series of plates. The first commercial mill consisted of two units, one on each overhung end of a horizontal shaft, driven by a gear train from a 100-hp. motor. A description of this machine, then in operation at a mine at Georgetown, Calif., was printed in the Engineering and Mining Journal (April, 1932) and need not be repeated here. That machine took mine run ores of a size up to 12 in. and successfully produced a pulp of approximately minus 60 mesh, suitable for flotation. The mills were each 24 ft. in diameter and 3 ft. in width of face. The elevating buckets were formed of steel plates, extending inward from the periphery, inclined to the tangent at 75". This plate was 3 ft., the width of the wheel, and 2 ft. deep. One side of the wheel towards the carrying shaft was closed, the other was open except for the rim plate enclosing the ends of the buckets and extending inward about 5 ft. on the radius. About a 90" arc was immersed in a concrete tank, which acted as a classifier. The breaking plates, seven in number, were carried cantilever through the open side of the wheel. The lowest plate was placed just above the water level. The illustrations (Figs. 1 and 2) make plain the general arrangements. The plant set-up was somewhat crude but worked well enough to demonstrate the weak points of the mill. In this operation it was early apparent that, considering all the factors from delivery of the mine run ore to the final pulp for flotation or cyanida-tion, the Hadsel mill offered possibilities of great simplicity of plant and savings in power. Continuous operation developed mechanical weaknesses, some of which were readily discernible in details of design, some became more apparent as operations progressed.

" John Maynard Keynes INTRODUCTION The principles of time value of money concepts were discussed and illustrated in Chapter 3. The importance of time value of money and the role it plays in the discipline of engineering economy have been well established. Chapter 9 further illustrates that project evaluation criteria that fail to consider this aspect are seriously deficient in providing appropriate capital budgeting decisions. Obviously future project receipts and expenditures must be discounted to permit valid comparisons with current cash flows. Although the concept of discounting is widely accepted, the selection of the appropriate discount rate has been the source of considerable debate and much disagreement. This chapter, then, provides an overview of the theoretical and practical considerations for determining or calculating the appropriate rate for discounting, the corporate cost of capital. Note specifically that the assumption of constant business risk among the various investment alternatives is maintained throughout this chapter. THE INTUITIVE APPROACH The fact that interest exists suggests that all money has a cost associated with its use. The cost of this money may be the result of either explicit or implicit charges or some combination of the two. Any time an individual or a firm consumes less than the total earnings generated in a given time period that individual or corporation has either consciously or unconsciously decided to "invest" these excess funds in some type of activity. For instance, the individual or corporation may decide to invest the excess funds in tangible property, place the funds in a money market account, or simply keep these funds in cash. In any case, these funds have been invested in some type of activity which promises the investor some return on the invested capital. Remembering that the firm's primary objective should be the maximization of shareholder wealth, then intuitively it seems reasonable to suggest that the firm should not invest in any project where the anticipated return does not exceed the cost of funds (capital) committed to the project. Indeed, if the firm always invests in projects having returns in excess of the cost of capital committed to them, then the wealth of the firm (as measured by the price of common stock) should be in-

We author of this historical chapter will perhaps be criticized for limiting his subject to the history of the blast furnace in lead smelting, and especially to the part it played in the great custom ore-smelting business which for three decades or more was the means of opening up vast mineral treasures and practically dominated the mining industry in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, in Mexico and in Canada. The men of that era shared the romance and the thrills of mining, and bore their part as pioneers in the building of the great West. The present writer was too young to participate in the first of the three decades mentioned, but immediately thereafter came under the apprenticeship of some of the men who had worked out the early metallurgical problems of the industry, became personally acquainted with most of the others of that group, heard the tales of early experiences, successes and failures, the gossip of the frontier and mining camps, from all of which there remain embedded in his mind clear impressions of the outstanding personalities of that time. That is the background against which the fifty years of intimate contact with the mining and smelting business and his own experiences as metallurgist stand out in his memory, and it is hoped that the gentle reader may understand and approve his desire to rescue from comparative oblivion the fundamentally valuable results accomplished by these fathers of the industry. It will be the purpose of this chapter first to narrate the general history of the growth of the industry; second, to pay tribute to some of the pioneer metallurgists, and third, to discuss some of the salient points of the metallurgical practice at different periods, to illustrate the technical progress of the art. The series of eight Annual Reports of Rossiter W. Raymondl,† U. S. Commissioner of Mining Statistics from 1869 to 1876, contain most of the available information about the early smelting operations in the Rocky Mountain region, and much is in the early volumes of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The monograph by S. F. Emmons2 though not published until 1886, contained an elaborate description of the smelting works operating in 1879. Otto H. Considering the great advance in the development and application of electricity, it is not strange that eventually a big field for its use has been found in oil-field operations. So far as is known, the first electric drive in oil-field operations was in the Russian field of Baku in 1900. The first application in this country was made by the South Penn Oil Co. near Folsom, West Va. in 1903. In 1916, electric power was first used in the Burma fields of India for drilling and pumping. Between 1916 and 1922, The Empire Gas & Fuel Co. made the first large electrical installation in the Mid-Continent fields. But although the first application was made 27 years ago, it is only within the last 10 years that oil companies have begun to look upon its use with much favor. Within the last few years, there has been a steady increase in the use of electricity in the oil fields. The first application of electricity for oil-field operations in Wyoming was in the Lander field in 1919; the second was in 1924 in Salt Creek; and the third, and last to date, was made by the Continental Oil Co. in the Big Muddy field during 1926. Lander Field The electrification of oil-field operations in Wyoming was initiated by J. W. Steele, superintendent of the Producers & Refiners Oil Corpn., in the Lander field in 1919. At that time, 32 wells were being pumped from five band-wheel powers, with oil engines as the prime movers. Eight barrels of fuel oil were used for power per day and at the price of 90 c. per bbl. the fuel bill was $36 per day. It was decided to try a 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motor on one of these powers. Electric power was generated with steam at the old Wind River refinery station. This test was so successful that in 1920 all five powers were equipped with 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motors, the power being obtained from the Sinks Canyon hydroelectric station. Four of these powers pumped wells at an average depth of 1450 ft., and the fifth pumped wells at an average of 2100 ft. In 1920, the average production per day from the 32 wells was 325 bbl. There are important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of theories of homogeneous, isotropic materials. Subsidence of strata about mine openings is an example. In-situ stress measurements in nonisotropic sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks is another. Patterns of joints, faults, fractures, and similar geologic features impart directional mechanical properties to rock masses that are locally isotropic or anisotropic. On the geologic scale, the non-homogeneity of composite rock masses may, in certain instances, be dealt with as homogeneous anisotropy. The mechanics of large rock masses can, therefore, be expected to involve considerations of anisotropy. The source of the anisotropy is not relevant. Once the scale of observation is selected and the material is defined accordingly, the analysis of stress and deformation proceeds without regard to the numerical values of the material constants. There are also important phenomena in rock and soil mechanics that cannot be explained in terms of linear elasticity, theory. For the mechanical description of anisotropic geologic materials capable of de- forming beyond the limit of purely elastic strains, a plasticity theory is required.

The experimental phase behavior of several field gas-condensate systems, one field volatile oil system, and a series of synthetic systems having gas-oil ratios from 2,000 to 20,000 scf/bbl stock tank oil was measured. The data were used to calculate the depletion performance of the field systems at their respective reservoir temperatures and of the synthetic systems at various temperatures. The results of the performance calculations were used to prepare correlations of total stock tank oil and separator gas in-place, and the amount of each recovered by primary depletion. Data needed to use the correlations are initial gas-oil ratio, initial tank oil gravity, reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure. The correlations presented should be useful for estiinating recovery from reservoirs producing volatile oils or rich gas condensates having gas-oil ratios from about 2,000 to 30,000 scf/bbl of stock tank oil. INTRODUCTION Prediction of depletion performance for gas-condensate reservoirs usually requires extensive laboratory work or lengthy phase-behavior calculations. For many small gas-condensate bearing zones the expense of such work is often not justified. Furthermore, where large holdings are involved, it is useful to have estimates of future oil and gas production in advance of the results of a laboratory analysis, even if such work is ultimately planned. For these reasons, it would be of value to have a method for rapidly estimating the depletion performance of gas-condensate reservoirs from the type of field data usually available. Few data on the reservoir depletion performance are available for the purpose of developing correlations. The increasing number of gas-condensate discoveries and the advent of high-speed computers have stimulated the development of methods for predicting performance. Such calculated performance data have been shown to be reliable and are becoming accepted as a basis for reserve estimates and for engineering studies. It therefore seems satisfactory to use results of performance predictions themselves for the purpose of developing the desired correlations. Such an approach is described in this paper. Several rich natural gas-condensate systems (gas-oil ratios of from about 3,600 to 60,000 scf/bbl) and one natural volatile oil system were studied (2,363 scf/bbl). In addition, to provide a more systematic basis for correlating purposes, a series of related, synthetic reservoir fluid mixtures was also studied (GOR's from about 2,000 to 25,000 scf/bbl). The purpose of this paper is to show how the recovery of oil and gas by primary depletion may be estimated from surface gas-oil ratio, reservoir temperature and pressure, and tank oil gravity. procedure Experiments Companion samples of gas and oil were collected from the high pressure separators in nine different fields at the time of their discovery. MONTANA Phosphate Produucts Co., a subsidiary of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., operates three properties near Garrison, Mont., known as the Anderson, Graveley, and Luke mines. All three are underground operations, mining the same narrow bed at points several miles apart. The Anderson, the oldest and largest of the three, has produced about 700,000 long tons since 1929. The Graveley has produced slightly over 100,000 long tons since 1940, and the Luke, acquired in 1943, is still in an early stage of development. The great bulk of the output has been shipped to the Trail, B. C., plant of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. for use in the manufacture of fertilizers. The phosphate seam is the basal member of the Permian Phosphoria formation. In all three mines it has a uniform thickness of 3 to 4 ft. of oulitic phosphate, with a few shaly partings. The overlying part of the formation comprises about 50 ft. of chert and the immediate footwall consists of a few feet of shale and sandstone. underlain by the Quadrant quartzite.

Discussion of the paper of H. 0. Hofman and C. R. Hayward, presented at the New Haven Meeting, February, 1909, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, June, 1909, pp. 513 to 529. GEORGE W. RITER, Salt Lake City, Utah (communication to the Secretary*).-In their paper, Messrs. Hofman and Hayward deal with a branch of silver metallurgy that is on very uncertain ground, both as a commercial process and as a metallurgical science; moreover, its field is limited to few localities and to peculiar conditions. The literature on the subject is incomplete and full of conflicts. The paper under discussion clears u p no disputed points; on the contrary, because of hasty generalization, its tendency is towards further confusion. In Table I., the authors assume that each test-lot of 1,800 g. of ore contained exactly 5.499 g. of silver, that any variation in the quantity of silver recovered, however slight, should be ascribed to variation in the time of grinding. It is barely possible that the ore was mixed so uniformly as to justify this assumption; but those of us who know how difficult it is to get uniform samples of any ore in which silver mineral is present in rich particles will have a doubt on this point. The unlikelihood of getting absolutely uniform test-lots of ore also reflects on the data in Table II., on the effect of varying the amount of salt in a pan-charge. The authors say " The salt series was the last one that was investigated." This again raises a question as to whether the ore was split into test-lots at the time of sampling, or whether it was kept in bulk in such a way as to permit mechanical concentration of values before the end of the experiments. The conclusion following Table II.: " There is no reason, therefore, for going beyond six per cent. of salt," is hardly to the point. If we assume that salt is of benefit only when in solution, it follows that the relation between the quantity of salt

THE past year, the first full one of peacetime production, proved that the process of beating swords into plowshares has increased in complexity in step with civilization. Further, judging by various remarks of our distaff departments, the crystal balls of certain radio and magazine oracles must have been cloudy, because we have been in formed from time to time that coveted items such as automobiles and refrigerators did not appear in great abundance. This seemingly extraneous matter is really not out of place here, however; the steel producer and the fabricator exist in a sort of symbiosis: the making of consumer goods produces scrap which is returned to the steelmaker who makes more steel, and so on and so forth. Thus, no abundance of automobiles, no abundance of scrap from this normal source; and other sources had been picked pretty clean during the war. To be short, so was scrap. Since the economy of the steel industry lean; as heavily upon iron from scrap as upon iron from ore, the statement on transformation of swords to plowshares follows. But this is not the whole story: after all, ingot production was a record for a peace year!

A method is shown for the study of the creep rate dependence of metals on the applied stress under the condition of constant structure. The method was applied to pure aluminum and to dilute solid solution alloys of magnesium, copper, germanium, zinc, and silver in aluminum. A linear relationship was found to exist between the true stress and the logarithm of the creep rate. ALTHOUGH extensive creep data are now avail-Aable, the fundamentals of the creep phenomena are as yet only vaguely understood. Many attempts have been made to formulate theories for creep. Eut their agreement with fact has been disappointing. It appears that merely pyramiding more of the same type of data that is now available will not provide the essential aid toward formulating a better understanding of the complicated process of creep. Perhaps attempts to construct better models for the mechanism of creep might have to be tentatively abandoned until new types of definitive creep data are uncovered. The question therefore arises regarding what type of data might be needed to provide the essential knowledge for formulating better and more realistic theories of creep. Perhaps one source of the failure to uncover an adequate theory arises from the fact that practically all theories for creep and nearly all analyses of experimental data on creep disregard the well-known fact that the structure of metals changes during creep. For example, it is customary in evaluating the effect of stress on the creep rate to correlate the secondary creep rate with the applied stress. But, as has been demonstrated recently,' the structures obtained during secondary creep tend to exhibit deformation banding at high stresses and polygoniza- tion at the lower stresses. Consequently the stress-secondary creep rate relationships found in this way are not fundamental, inasmuch as they reveal not only the effect of stress but also the effect of differences in structure on the secondary creep rates. It is the purpose of the study reported here to isolate the effect of stress alone on the creep rate in an attempt to provide new data for possible formulation of a better theory of creep. In addition an attempt will also be made to ascertain how structure, temperature, and alloying might affect the stress-creep rate relationship. The procedure that was adopted was simple: A specimen was precrept at a given engineering stress U, (initial engineering stress during creep under constant load, namely the load divided by the initial area of the specimen) and temperature T to a selected engineering strain, e (engineering strain, namely, the instantaneous gage length minus the initial gage length divided by the initial gage length), at which time the true stress was reduced to some lower value of the true stress, ^ (the true instantaneous stress, namely, the load divided by the instantaneous area). The instantaneous true creep rate, i, (the true strain rate; with E, the true strain, namely, the natural logarithm of the instantaneous over the initial gage length) following reduction of the true stress to U, was then determined. Second, third, etc., tests were conducted under identical conditions except the stress was reduced to yet lower values, us, u,, yielding yet lower instantaneous creep rates, ;, and i,. Inasmuch as the precreep conditions were identical in each series of tests, the instantaneous structures obtained immediately after reducing the stress were presumed to be identical.

IN last year's report on the progress of geophysics, the airborne magnetometer was the featured new development. At that time only a relatively small number of surveys had been made. During 1947, the airborne magnetometer was used in making many surveys and is again one of the high lights of the year in geophysics. This report is mainly concerned with geophysics as applied to the search for minerals exclusive of petroleum. In 194,5 and 1946, the use of the magnetic method reached a peak, partly because of an active period of prospecting brought on by an active mining market, particularly in Canada.

THE United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company maintains an ore-purchasing department for procurement of custom tonnages of milling and smelting ores and concentrates for treatment at its Midvale plant. Arrangements with other companies provide for treatment of Company and custom zinc concentrates. Location of the Midvale plant in the heart of the Western mining country makes it possible to serve shippers from these nine producing states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Shipments from most of these states travel over main-line railroads, delivery being made at Midvale within a short time after billing of the shipment. (communication to the Secretary*):—While this paper is primarily intended as a discussion of Mr. Riter's, I think it will be best to indicate my criticism by describing my own field-methods. It has been my experience that, for ordinary work, the regular transit-book is to be preferred to the card-system for recording notes. This is specially true when computations in the field are required, for it is then necessary to have at hand the total latitudes, departures, ancl elevations. Moreover, the transit-book is easier to carry and manipulate in wet or cramped places, and is not as liable to damage as the loose leaf or card. I use a regular transit-book in the field, and then copy my notes, sketches, etc., in an o5ce-book, entering also the latitudes, departures, and other reductions. These values are then copied into the field-book, securing a duplicate record, in case either book should be lost or mislaid. In the field-book, the notes are entered on the left-hand, and the sketches and remarks on the right-hand page. The next two pages are left blank for the latitudes, departures, bearings, reduced distances, etc. Of course, the notes for the different parts of the mine are entered in the field-book in the order in which they are surveyed; but in the they are entered systematically. It has been my experience that the system of keeping notes used by a surveyor, is particularly adapted to the needs and temperament of the individual. Otherwise, he would not be

The value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,' has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.² A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the pereentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. Many thousands of proximate analyses have been made by the West Virginia Geological Survey, covering nearly every county in which coal is found. Numerous others have been made by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, but as uniformity of results is best secured by adhering to one set of analyses, the tests of the West Virginia Survey have been cxclusively used.

It is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed. The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. Chemical analysis has made it possible to select ores so that the composition of the charge can be kept fairly constant; coal may be obtained from a given field, and coked in the same kind of ovens under conditions which make the fuel practically uniform; the Gayley

NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one's capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen's compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen's compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

FREQUENTLY the careful engineer puts the word porphyry in quotation marks or precedes it with "so-called," when he writes of the Porphyry Copper mines. This is done by way of serving notice that he is aware that the term is not a precise one, though no one who is informed on the subject would in any event misinterpret it. The name originated from the fact that the rock containing the copper at Utah Copper, Morenci, Nevada Consolidated, and Braden-the first four to be developed-was in each instance known as porphyry. The term was convenient; and when Ray, Miami, and inspiration came along they fell into the Porphyry category even though the ore consisted essentially of a rock called schist instead of porphyry. The word is not inclusive enough; nor as a matter of fact is it sufficiently exclusive. Numerous copper deposits occur in porphyry rocks that are not Porphyry Coppers, paradoxical as it may seem. Desiring to be more accurate and at the same time to use a word that is in some degree descriptive, various engineers have adopted the expression "disseminated copper deposits." This alludes to the characteristic scattering of grains or specks of copper minerals more or less uniformly throughout the mass of the rock. Yet here again the implication is not entirely accurate, for the following reason: in some of the ores, the proportion of copper minerals "peppered" in the rock is small, compared with that which coats the walls of cracks and minute fissures; and that which is found as veinlets along planes of fracture. Many geologists have extended their interpretation of the term disseminated to include both types of mineral occurrence.
