ALTHOUGH a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS OF SOLDERS IN GENERAL General Physical Properties.-When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.-The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. IN the closing months of 1936 the copper industry gave every evidence that it was at last on the threshold of an improved era. At the beginning of the year prices stood at 9 1/4¢, which in itself was a great improvement over prices prevailing for the three previous years. Industry generally was showing signs of moving forward in this country, and business was definitely good in certain foreign quarters. The threat of war and prep-arations for rearmament in Europe and Asia acted as a further stimulus purchasing. By midsummer the situation had so improved and stocks to been so reduced that the cartel of foreign producers (including American producers with foreign mines) decided to increase the produc-tion quota to 75 per cent on Aug. 1. Large-scale buying gave continued strength to the price and by Oct. 1 the quota was increased to 80 per cent, and again on Oct. 15, to 85 per cent. Notwithstanding this the price of copper continued its advance and on Nov. 1, with stocks declining con-tinuously, the cartel increased operations to 95 per cent, then to 105 per cent on Nov. 5. In the meantime the domestic producers, because of the great increase in home consumption, had increased their production by nearly one-half. At the close of the year copper sold at 120 per pound, and since the turn of the present year has reached 170. This rapid increase has not been wholly justified. Much of the increase was due to the legitimate demands of recovering industry, but rearmament orders plus accumulation of reserve stocks in case of war, purchases in anticipation of labor strikes and purely speculative activities on the London Metal Exchange accounted for the balance. Certainly in view of the state of industry and the general world price level, it appears unnecessarily high. Talk of a copper shortage is sheer nonsense, the recent condition in the market being created by overbuying, leaving but a small volume for speculative supplies. For most applications this was a serious drawback, not SO much because the structural properties of the metal were impaired but because of the rapidity with which heavy sections of the alloys were penetrated by small elongated pits. These pits seemed to initiate readily in oxidizing metal salt solutions like ferric chloride and in chloride solutions like sea water. It was observed that in sea water pitting was more frequent in stagnant or polluted waters than in highly aerated, moving waters. The steels in these chloride solutions were observed to be sensitive to long contact with material such as sand grains or attached barnacles. At points of attachment or contact it was not uncommon to discover initiation of corrosion. Pits once begun at contact faces were observed to grow rapidly, usually elongating phenomenally in the direction of gravity until the metal was perforated. Hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing acids, on the other hand, were observed to corrode stainless steels generally; the weight losses often were higher, but the penetration less than for the pitting type of corrosion. The causes of pitting, a type of corrosion recognized as characteristic not only of stainless steels but of many additional metals and alloys, are important in corrosion studies. A possible explanation bears practical significance, for once it is known why pits begin where they do and continue to grow after initiation, intelligent direction can be given to diminishing corrosion. This can be done either by some alteration in the composition and treatment or' the alloy or by some alteration in the environment. It appears foremost in importance to discover the nature of pit foci, for if initiation of pits can be discouraged their growth will be no longer a factor to be considered. The varying physical character and large extent of the Broken Hill lode necesarily involve the employment of a variety of underground methods. The lode had its origin in an extensive fault plane traversing metamorphosed schists conformably, as a rule, with their beds of stratification. The underground waters carrying minerals in solution deposited their contents in the original cavities formed by the faulting action, and in the enlargements of these cavities due to dynamic forces brought to bear on the rocks, more especially on the hanging-wall side of the fault. This deposition was supplemented by metasomatic replacement of a portion of the original rock contents by the argentiferous sulphides of lead and zinc which form the staple products of the district. Although the orebody is practically continuous throughout the mines, its width varies greatly, ranging from a few feet to about 350 ft. The widest portions occur in conjunction with huge folds in the inclosing country rock, almost exclusively on the hanging-wall side. The ore in these folds pitches to the south in the southern half of the field, and to the north in the northern half; there are, however, undulations in these ore channels evidently due to compression of the rocks in the direction of the channels. In the earlier days, before the orebodies had been opened up, vertical cross-sections across these bulges in the hanging wall gave the lode the appearance of the "saddle formation," so well exemplified at Bendigo in Victoria; but subsequent development of the ore channels has long since proved that the formations in the two districts are entirely different. The depth reached by the zone of complete oxidation of the sulphides varies from about 259 to 550 ft, from the original outcrop, while partial oxidation extends in places below the 1,000-ft. level. The result of oxidizing influences has been the production of ore of every grade of cohesive-ness, from that of dry sand to that of hard compact rock. The methods of mining followed in this field, and even in individual mines, are varied in accordance with the character of the ore. EPPELSHEIMER, * Middletown, Ohio.-The housing of employees has so many and so varied aspects that in order to reach even an approximately correct solution it is necessary to have in mind a few fundamental principles; but it is not possible as yet to write these housing principles in the clear and correct form that is possible with many of our natural laws. Manifestly, the problem depends first on the kind of people it is necessary to house. What is suitable for the Southern unattached negro is not suitable for the married skilled American. The influx of colored labor has affected quite a number of what were satisfactorily housed communities. The second important factor is the relative proportion of the number of employees to the total employable population of the community in which the industry is located. The employer of a hundred men in. a large city has little responsibility in the matter of housing his employees. If he employs 75 per cent. of the employable population in a community of 27,000, as is the case of the company with which the writer is connected, it means a large responsibility. In the establishment of an entirely new plant in a more or less isolated place, the responsibility becomes greater. As engineers, we design and write the specifications for the machinery to accomplish a definite purpose, and proceed to house it, provide the necessary buildings with their accessories in the way of cranes, or heating systems, or sprinkling systems, as the case may be. There is no reason why the operating force should not be built up in very much the same way: design the organization, write its specifications so that the employment department can secure the proper men, and then house that organization with just as much thought and care as is given the plant. In the plant, the various machines will work along certain definite lines and accomplish certain results; but even if we start with the proper organization it takes considerable time to get that organization working together. One of the most important elements to this end is the proper housing of the organization. A man usually spends more time at home than at work. Proper surroundings and a comfortable, convenient house of good appearance exercise an influence that cannot be denied, and an employee situated in such surroundings is far more inclined to follow the policies of his employer and take an active part in furthering them

THE CHAIRMAN (G. H. CLEVENGER, Stanford University, Cal.).¬I would like to ask Mr. Pyne if he has had any experience inn the use of chromite as refractory under conditions that are highly reducing? I am reminded of an experience I once had with an electric furnace. I imagined that chromite would form a splendid lining, but it soon disappeared; hence it seems probable that, under highly reducing conditions at a high temperature, chromite is a very poor refractory. F. R. PYNE.-In copper smelting the atmosphere is generally neutral, or slightly oxidizing; we do not use highly reducing atmospheres at all, not even in the matting furnace. You can take the chromite brick and treat it as you would an iron ore, obtaining ferro-chrome very readily, from which the copper will separate. We have done this; in fact, at one time we considered installing a small electric furnace for the production of ferro-chrome. FOREST RUTHERFORD, New York, N. Y.-During the time I was general superintendent at the smelter of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co., at Douglas, Ariz., a great many experiments were made on the furnaces and settlers with different kinds of brick, and I agree with Mr. Pyne's statements about chrome brick. Their power to absorb metals is very great, and as they cannot be smelted at any temperatures obtainable in a copper furnace, to get rid of the bats and extract the metal from them is quite a problem. We finally got down to using chrome brick only for lining the settlers, out of which we often got a life of upwards of 2 years, and for lining the blast-furnace bottoms, for the reason that chrome brick can be heated and wet, or wet after being heated, without going to pieces, whereas under these conditions magnesite brick will break down very rapidly. We also used a layer of chrome brick above and below an 18-in. band of magnesite brick put on the slag line of the reverberatories, in order to separate the magnesite from the silica brick, fearing that they would slag each other and let the wall drop. The idea worked, but became unnecessary on account of a change made in the method of feeding the furnaces. Chronic brick will not stand up under pressure so well as a good Grecian or Austrian magnesite brick, on account of the poorer bonding properties of the materials from which the chrome brick is made.

minum bronze. Nearly all copper-base alloys are improved by rolling processes, but the copper-aluminum alloys seem to possess equally good properties when cast or rolled; this is a remarkable metallurgical fact. Another important property of these copper-aluminum alloys is their resistance to alternating stress. Many tests indicate that their resistance is greater in this respect than that of some steels, and I have seen instances when cast aluminum-bronze bolts have outlived five steel bolts in foundation work subject to severe shocks. I mention these various instances to indicate that work originally started as research for substitution of one material for another frequently develops 212 article which has properties not possessed by the original metal or alloy. I have dwelt particularly on the aluminum bronzes because recently I have done more special work on them than on other alloys, but I believe that the use of aluminum itself, in many combinations of metals, is a very important subject for investigation. Undoubtedly, after the war, the cost of aluminum will be reduced from its present price, and considering its low specific gravity it offers a very interesting and important field for research in the non-ferrous business. Naturally, if combinations containing aluminum can be developed in view of a probably increasing supply of metal, the cost will be reduced. This will benefit the industry generally and will immediately conserve tin. Bronzes, Bearing Metals, and Solders G. K. Burgess* and R. W. Woodward,† Washington, D. C.— From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information sewed by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried. DEFINITIONS The ores of iron are classified in three general categories: direct shipping, concentrates, and agglomerated-i.e., pelletized or sintered. Direct Shipping As the name implies, direct-shipping ores are shipped as mined or, perhaps, after screening. Generally, direct-shipping ores are hematitic (R203), magnetitic (R304), or limonitic (2Fe2O3.3H20) in nature. Grades of direct-shipping ores vary widely. Prices are frequently related to the historical Mesabi standard of 51.5% iron, although certain premium lump ores may contain up to 68% iron. The use of direct-shipping ores is diminishing as the advantages of beneficiated ores become evident and reserves are depleted. Concentrates Where the nature of the deposit and economics allows, certain ores are upgraded. This may include no more than washing and screening, or may be as elaborate as fine grinding followed by magnetic, gravity, or even flotation procedures for separation. Coarser concentrates may be smelted "as is.'; Fine concentrates usually are sold as sinter feed. (Sinter, as used here and in the following, refers to a process by which a fine ore-carbon mixture is agglomerated at elevated temperatures on a direct-fired moving grate to eliminate fines and improve chemical and physical homogeneity.) Agglomerates-Pellets or Sinter The development of economic techniques of mining and concentrating taconite (fine-grained, ferruginous jasperoids) led to the introduction of the iron-ore pellet, which is now becoming the major form in which iron is introduced into the furnace. The tremendous reserves of magnetic taconites of the northern United States and Canadian Precambrian shield had been recognized for many years. A century of mining has seen the reserves of the direct-shipping or "red ores" of the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin ranges approach depletion. Research started in the 1930s has seen the evolution of motives and techniques to concentrate these stubborn refractory ores. The efficacy of concentrate pellets in iron-making has been such as to induce mines throughout the world to grind, concentrate, and pelletize otherwise shipping-grade ores. Table 14.1A.1 shows typical analyses of iron ore. Marketing-Prices of iron may be quoted on a value per long-ton (2240 lbs) or metric-ton (1000 kg or 2204 lb) basis, or on a value per long-ton-unit or metric-ton-unit basis. Gentlemen.-It is pleasant to be able to report that the year just closed has been a prosperous and successful one for the Institute. As is shown by the reports of the Treasurer and the Finance Committee, the business affairs of this organization are in excellent condition. With property valued at more than three-quarters of a million dollars, and with considerable sums in various funds and endowments, it is possible to spend on each member of whatever class $22.65 each year, more than the maxi- mum amount of dues received from any one, and substantially twice the average amount, $10.94, received from all. To do this has required close management and a strict regard for our limitations. In 1926, when the Budget was made up, the estimated expenditures for the work which it was felt the Institute must do exceeded the estimated receipts by some $14,000. At the close of the year, despite a number of unexpected decreases in receipts, it had proved possible to accomplish substantially all the work laid out and close the books with the usual transfer of initiation fees to the General Reserve, and still only reduce the cash balance $2,074.54. This was made possible by the hearty and loyal cooperation of the whole staff of employees and the extremely large amount of gratuitous service rendered by the officers, the members of the Divisions and technical Committees, and the membership generally. Even so it was impossible, because of limitations of funds, to undertake many things it is highly desirable for the Institute to do, and it was necessary to refuse the publication of important papers and committee studies, because of the lack of funds. PUBLICATIONS In an analysis of the income and expenses of the Institute published in the February issue of our Journal, MINING AND METALLURGY, it was pointed out that the largest item of expenditure is, as it should -be, for publications. Printing, binding, and distributing the various technical papers sent to the members cost in 1926 more than all the money received from dues, including the portion allocated as subscription to the magazine. Within the. year, the following volumes were printed and, with the exception of the second volume of TRANSACTIONS, which was mailed in January, were distributed : TRANSACTIONS, Volume 73, 1241 pages, covering papers on non-ferrous metallurgy, milling and concentration, non-metallic minerals, iron and steel, and the Institute of Metals Division papers read at the

MAJOR considerations in the production of stainless steel are the utilization of stainless steel scrap and the recovery of chromium and other metallic values from the initial furnace charge. The decarburization of a bath of molten chromium steel with gaseous oxygen is usually accompanied by a considerable amount of metallic oxidation. Since recovery of this metal from the slag may require substantial expenditures of time and materials for slag reduction, holding metallic oxidation to the minimum consistent with good operating practice is generally desirable. The important role of temperature in minimizing metallic oxidation is illustrated by Fig. 1, taken from the results of Hilty, Healy, and Crafts,' who established the quantitative relations connecting the amounts of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized during the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats with the composition of the initial charge and the temperature and composition of the molten bath after oxidation. Higher temperatures after the oxygen blow result in lower metallic oxidation. Although high temperatures are desirable for minimizing metallic oxidation, practical operating considerations limit the degree to which they can be employed. Excessively high temperatures or prolonged operation at moderately high temperatures may cause serious damage to the furnace refractories, so that a compromise must be effected. The problem, therefore, is one of controlling the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats to the shortest time at the highest practical temperature. The most effective tool the steel melter has for attaining high temperature while decarburizing a chromium steel heat is now commonly considered to be the oxygen lance with an adequate supply of gaseous oxygen. In order for the tool to be effective, however, the heat resulting from the oxidation of carbon, chromium, silicon, manganese, and iron in the bath must exceed the heat losses from the furnace. General recognition, of this principle has stimulated a trend toward faster injection of oxygen. For example, Pachaly2 proposed a high temperature at the start of the oxygen blow or a high rate of oxygen input as a means of obtaining the desired carbon level with high chromium recovery. On the other hand, limited understanding of the specific effects of oxygen input rate has hampered development of optimum practices. As part of a broad study of the metallurgy of chromium steel melting, therefore, the Linde Air Products Co. and the Electro Metallurgical Co. at their Metals Research Labo-ratories have evaluated the heat-balance during the oxidizing period in terms of oxygen input rate. The evaluation has then been related to factors such as temperature increase, metallic oxidation, oxygen Utilization, etc., and extrapolated to include a wide

It may he of interest, and perhaps of inzportance, to the members of the Institute that specific mention should be made in detail of the great value of this method of copying or photographing all kinds of tracings." Several samples are laid upon the table which may serve as illustrations of the results obtained. Some of these show slight imperfections, depending upon the character of the tracing, and upon the length of the exposure to the light, but it may be clearly seen that even a faint copy would be quite available for actual use. The process is believed to be of French origin, and has been used for many years. Special attention seems to have been directed to it recently, and its great value to engineers appears likely to be fully recognized. The manipulations required are of the simplest possible kind, and are entirely within the skill and comprehension of any office boy who can be trusted to copy a letter in an ordinary press. These particulars may be summarized somewhat thus: 1. Provide a flat board as large as the tracing which is to be copied. 2. Lay on this hoard two or three thicknesses of common blanket, or its equivalent, to give a slightly yielding backing for the paper. 3. Lay on the blanket the prepared paper with the sensitive side uppermost. 4. Lay on this paper the tracing, smoothing it out as perfectly as possible so as to insure a perfect contact with the paper. 5. Lay on the tracing a plate of clear glass, which should be heavy enough to press the tracing close down upon the paper. Ordinary plate-glass of 3/8" thickness is quite sufficient. 6. Expose the whole to a clear sunlight, by pushing it out on a shelf from an ordinary window, or in any other convenient way, for six to ten minutes. If a clear skylight only can be had, the exposure must be continued for thirty or forty-five minutes, and under a cloudy sky, sixty to ninety minutes may be needed.

Chen,, who was killed by forest fire in the mountainous re-ion of Kokiu-Chang where he had been operating as Engineer in Chief of the Yunnan Tin Trading Co. Mr. Chen graduated in 1911 from the Department, of Mines, .University of California, being the first Chinese Government scholar in mining to attend that institution; and one of the first in America. He came of a distinguished family, many members of Which are in official life in Peking and in his native province of Hunan, all of whom are noted for their classical scholarship. He was himself a Hsiao-tsai or Bachelor of Arts, a coveted degree of the old literati class, Which he won under the Manchu regime when he was still a stripling. His mining work in Yunnan was carried on with only the most primitive facilities and in a distant province, but was, nevertheless, attended with great success and profit for his company. The region is infested with brigands and rebellious troops. who frequently turn marauders and prey upon the countryside, and Mr. Chen has had to go to the mines always with a large armed guard sometimes aggregating 150 men and some hundreds of miners, also armed. Two armed squads of men keep in touch with his base 'at Kokiu-Chang every day to get supplies and food, and it is feared that the brigands who have thus been prevented from plundering and mobbing his parties have started 'he fires to burn him out, with the disastrous result reported. Mr. Chen has thus given his life to his country in the attempt to win for modern China and Chinese civilization the raw materials of her new industrial life. He did so cheerfully and with full appreciation of the dangers that beset him, and China regards this as one of the most noble sacrifices of her young sons on the altar of patriotism. He is survived by a daughter of two years and by his widow who was also a graduate of the University of California and will be remembered by her classmates as Lucy Kong, 1912.

The Jeffrey Company Opens Branch in Seattle The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, announces the re-opening of its Northwestern Branch Office at Seattle, Wash., and the appointment of Mr. Percy E. Wright, Consulting Mechanical Engineer, as District Manager for Oregon, Washington, Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta. Mr. Wright, who has been in the Northwest since 1910, and whose connection with the Jeffrey company dates back to 1902, has' had a wide and varied experience and training in the handling of the Jeffrey line which will enable him to be of great assistance to customers in solving their elevating, conveying and transmission problems. Trade Catalogs To a majority of the public, the name 'DuPont suggests military powder-munitions of war. The DuPont Products Book A-430 (April, 1916) lists 251 distinct commodities made. and sold by this company, many of which are far removed from destructive work. Mining men are fully cognizant of the need for explosives in constructive work, but they may be surprised to know that side by side with the powder and dynamite this company manufactures such peaceful articles as substitute leather, combs and collar buttons. The substitute for leather is Fabrikoid, varying in weight from a quality light enough for bookbinding to one heavy enough for trunks and automobiles, and the combs and collar buttons (with scores of other articles) are made from Pyralin. The book also contains a long list of chemicals, and a shorter list of special products and miscellaneous materials such as charcoal, wood flour and saltpeter. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, making elevating, conveying, crushing, screening and power transmission machinery, has just issued its. latest Bulletin, No. 177, :featuring self-propelling wagon and truck loaders for handling crushed stone, sand, gravel, clinker, coke, etc. These machines are described as having a capacity of 1 to 1 ½ cu. yd. of material per minute, with power to load crushed stone maximum size pieces through 3 ½ -in. ring and to load trucks or wagons in 3 or 4 min. The self-propelling device is designed to enable one man to operate the loader as it is fed into the pile, and to move the machine about under its own power.

I HAVE now the duty—the very pleasant duty—to perform, of presenting to the Hon. Abram S. Hewitt the Bessemer gold medal for distinguished services to the iron and steel trade. When this matter was brought under consideration in London it was well known that, as Mr. Hewitt would be the first to acknowledge, there is more than one man in America upon whom we would gladly have cm ferred this distinction, and to whom this merit might be justly at tributed ; but Mr. Hewitt has been long known to our distinguished members on the other side of the Atlantic as one of the most active minds in the investigation of new methods of manufacture, and one of the most enterprising metallurgists on this side of the Atlantic. Well, gentlemen, we proposed to Mr. Hewitt that he should receive this gold medal, but I think it is quite right, and is his due, that I should state that he at once declined to receive it; and he declined in a manner which rendered it impossible to any one but very per sistent friends and very obstinate Englishmen to refuse. When we heard that our American friends had conferred once more upon Mr. Hewitt the distinction of President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and particularly with reference to our contem plated visit, and when we heard that he had been elected unani mously to that position, we felt that we had received the stamp of approval from this side. Gentlemen, as I said before, Mr. Hewitt has long been known to many of us in England as an advocate of scientific education. A report which he made of the metallurgical products at the Paris Exposition in 1867 was one of the matters which drew very clearly and distinctly the attention of the English iron and steel trade to the necessity of further improvement in our technical education as to iron and steel; and it was one of those beginnings which led ultimately to the foundation of the Iron and Steel Institute. As the working levels in domestic mines are developed to greater depths and work areas move further from the shafts, maintaining a safe and healthful working environment becomes more difficult. Increased temperature and humidity at greater depths becomes first a factor in productivity and then a threat to the miner's safety. Initially, a miner might develop listlessness leading to reduced productivity and reduced alertness. Continued overexertion can lead to heat stroke and possibly death. Mine ventilation engineers, therefore, must not only provide clean air to work areas, but also must provide cooled air. The following article describes the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Foster-Miller's successful development of a high performance, low maintenance direct water to air contact heat exchanger for mine cooling. While heat problems frequently do not develop until mining operations descend below sea level, problems will arise any time mining penetrates high temperature rock. Hot fissure water will increase the severity of the situation, causing increases in wet bulb temperature - the temperature to which perspiring miners reject metabolic body heat. All energy expended in mining adds to the heat load which must be absorbed by the ventilation air. Just when the cooling capacity of ventilation air is needed most, adiabatic compression (autocompression) of air descending the shaft raises air temperatures 1.3g°C (2.5'F) to 2.94"C (5.3OF)/305m (1000 ft) depending on humidity. Increased temperatures decrease the ability of the air to absorb heat from the mine, and work area temperatures rise. Once forced ventilation air can no longer maintain safe work area temperatures, refrigeration methods must be employed. Many mines now use cooling coils for this purpose. A cooling coil uses refrigerated mine water to cool the air by passing the air through banks of copper tubing filled with cold water. Heat from the air is transferred to the water through the pipe with the aid of fins. Conventional water to air heat exchangers prove troublesome for many mines be- cause of the high levels of dust that are encountered, causing these exchangers to operate at relatively low efficiencies. A more satisfactory approach to work- place cooling is desired - one that offers reduced maintenance and increased cooling efficiency.

The technical and engineering problems in the manufacture of coke are today the problems of the byproduct oven. Except in a few special localitics, practically no beehive ovens have been built in the United States for the last 5 or 6 years except as renewals of old plants, and during these years the total number of beehive ovens in existence has been steadily falling. On the other hand, the number of byproduct ovens has increased from 4624 in 1911 to a total of about 7660 in operation at the end of 1917; with 2800 building, this makes a total of about 10,460 which will be in operation in 1918, or shortly thereafter. Preliminary Government estimates place the total production of coke for 1917 at 56,600,000 tons, the largest tonnage in the history of the industry. Of this 34,000,000 tons, or 60 per cent., was beehive, and 22,-600,000 tons, or 40 per cent., was byproduct coke. Some time in 1918 the production of byproduct coke should pass the beehive output, and when the byproduct ovens now building are completed the total byproduct capacity will be about 40,000,000 tons of coke per annum, which is over 70 per cent. of the record-breaking total coke production of 1917. The reasons for these changes in the coking industry are familiar to all of us, and need not be discussed here. Improvement in Oven Design Since the byproduct oven was brought to this country from Europe, in 1892, it has been radically improved, and from the point of view of American metallurgical practice it is safe to say that the American ovens arc superior to those of Europe. The points of superiority are mainly those of larger units and larger output per unit, and the greater extent to which labor-saving machinery has been introduced. The increased output is largely due to the use of silica refractory material, which permits higher heats and shorter coking time than are employed in Europe.
