minum bronze. Nearly all copper-base alloys are improved by rolling processes, but the copper-aluminum alloys seem to possess equally good properties when cast or rolled; this is a remarkable metallurgical fact. Another important property of these copper-aluminum alloys is their resistance to alternating stress. Many tests indicate that their resistance is greater in this respect than that of some steels, and I have seen instances when cast aluminum-bronze bolts have outlived five steel bolts in foundation work subject to severe shocks. I mention these various instances to indicate that work originally started as research for substitution of one material for another frequently develops 212 article which has properties not possessed by the original metal or alloy. I have dwelt particularly on the aluminum bronzes because recently I have done more special work on them than on other alloys, but I believe that the use of aluminum itself, in many combinations of metals, is a very important subject for investigation. Undoubtedly, after the war, the cost of aluminum will be reduced from its present price, and considering its low specific gravity it offers a very interesting and important field for research in the non-ferrous business. Naturally, if combinations containing aluminum can be developed in view of a probably increasing supply of metal, the cost will be reduced. This will benefit the industry generally and will immediately conserve tin. Bronzes, Bearing Metals, and Solders G. K. Burgess* and R. W. Woodward,† Washington, D. C.— From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information sewed by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried. This paper covers the theory and present state of development of an apparatus for the nonmathematical analysis of complex problems of reservoir and well behavior. At the present stage of development of this apparatus, it is capable of solving the water-drive problem of any reservoir performance for which a mathematical solution has been presented in the literature, either on the basis of steady or unsteady-state flow analysis. The theory is presented for the extension of the scope of this analyzer along the lines of the present development. The resulting apparatus should be able to solve reservoir-performance problems previously thought too difficult for practical solution by mathematical means. As an illustration of its operation and present scope, the analysis of a reservoir problem and synthesis of expected performance is presented. Introduction In this method† of analyzing problems of petroleum-reservoir and well behavior, the porous continuum of the reservoir is assumed to be divided into small blocks, or units. Each block is assumed to be small enough so that for a material balance on the fluids in the block an average pressure for the block can be used. In analyzing reservoir behavior from this point of view by mathematical means, a set of simultaneous difference equations would be obtained (two for each block), which must be solved or combined into a partial differential equation. In the method to be described here, instead of solving these sets of equations analytically, electrical units are constructed, which will behave in respect to the flow of electricity exactly as the reservoir units behave under various conditions of fluid flow. The electrical units are then wired together in the same way that the reservoir units are connected naturally by virtue of their geometrical locations and shapes. Fluid-Flow Equations Consider a block in a reservoir. Assume that reservoir fluid (or fluids) is flowing in at one face and out at the opposite face, and that the block is small enough so that at all points the stream lines are within one degree of perpendicular to the face. Furthermore, assume that the pressure, pi, at the upstream face (Fig, I) is not more than one per cent greater than P2 the pressure at the downstream face. A material balance will show that the mass of fluid flowing out less the mass of fluid flowing in will equal the change in density times the fluid volume. This is expressed in the equation:

OF widespread interest to all lead metallurgists is a dross smelting process that will consistently give mattes and speiss of low lead and high copper contents. It is a problem that has intrigued operators through the years. In the past few years, with increased amounts of copper and overcrowded metallurgical furnaces, it has been almost imperative to evolve some method. Experience at El Paso has shown that high copper-to-lead ratios can be consistently attained by use of the new soda process. † Older Methods Three older methods, i.e., 1. Dross plus siliceous ore and limestone. 2. Dross plus one fourth blast-furnace speiss and siliceous ore, 3. Dross plus sulphides and siliceous ore and scrap iron, do not give consistent results and the products are higher in lead and lower in copper than those produced with the soda process. Any radical changes in the blast-furnace drosses will throw any of these older methods into a tailspin. For almost ten years, El Paso used the third method, with varying results. It was noted that as the arsenic and anti- mony contents of the dross increased, the speiss and matte steadily increased in lead and decreased in copper. A dross containing four parts of copper to one part of arsenic was considered to be ideal. At times this balance of copper to arsenic was almost impossible to obtain, especially when handling copper Cottrell dusts, which vary so greatly in copper and arsenic. Custom smelters like El Paso, handling a great variety of dusts, concentrates and ores, are apt to have anywhere from I to 15 pct copper on charge, with a variable in arsenic of from 0.5 to 2 pct. With such conditions, and drosses varying from 12 to 40 pct copper, an operator using the older dross reverberatory practices would find it just about impossible to control the reverberatory operations and to produce a good product low in lead and high in copper. These conditions prevailed at El Paso from the year 1940 to the present. In May 1942 it was decided to experiment with the soda process. The Soda Process After considerable work the soda method was finally evolved to the present state. It has never failed to produce a good product even under the most adverse conditions. It might be well to remember that many men of thought in the smelting industry have at one time or other sugge~ted the removal of all copper, arsenic and antimony from the lead blast-furnace charge as an aid to better metallurgy.

POPULAR opinion, as it might be termed, has always been of the trend that a flotation reagent added to the ball mill during grinding would be more thoroughly mixed with the pulp and for that reason more effective in the production of low tailing. That there are other effects, inimical to good flotation, when using so-called chemical reagents, is brought out by the series of tests outlined in Table 2. It was defi-nitely proved that if either the T. T. mixture (20 per cent thiocarbanalid-80 per cent orthotoluidin) or po-tassium xanthate were added to the ball mill the result-ing flotation concentrate would be lower in copper and higher in insoluble than the concentrate produced by adding these same reagents without the ball mill cir-cuit. With the T. T. mixture four sets of tests were made. The screen analyses of the flotation feed show that there was very little difference in the original grind-ing. When the T. T. mixture was added to the head of the flotation machine the flotation concentrate had a little over 61 per cent solids -200 mesh. If the mix-ture was put into the ball mill the flotation concentrate had but 40.7 per cent of the solids -200 mesh for one set of tests, and 49.0 per cent for the other set. With the mixture at the head of flotation the total concen-trate was high in copper (34.715 and 36.525 per cent) and low in insoluble (13.20 and 11.61 per cent). The assay of the concentrate when the T. T. mixture was introduced into the ball mill was what might be termed low in copper (29.389 and 30.833 per cent). In one of these 'sets of tests (periods 8 to 11, third column) the insoluble was high, 16.81 per cent. The other run (peri-ods 12 to 15, fourth column) for some unknown reason shows a low insoluble, 12.72 per cent. With similar grinding the addition of potassium xan-thate to flotation produced a concentrate having 62.8 per cent -200 mesh, whereas with the potassium xanthate added to the ball mill the flotation concentrate was very coarse, only 36.4 per cent passing 200 mesh. The difference in the total assay of the concentrate is remarkable ; 35.847 per cent copper when the xanthate went to flotation and 30.44 per cent copper when the xanthate was added to the ball mill; insoluble, 10.94 per cent in the former instance, as 22.15 per cent in the latter.

VARIOUS rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two,1 three,2 five,4 an indefinite number,5 and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, † the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required, changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: I. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, - the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation. Therefore the stable end orientation should be a symmetrical one around the stress axis with respect to the active slip systems such that lattice rotations resulting from slip will cancel each other and prevent a resultant change in orientation. (Rotational symmetry only-not translation, inversion, nor others-is considered here.) Thus a metal under a pure stress should develop a texture consisting of one or more of the crystallographically symmetrical directions, <100>, <110> or <111> for cubic metals or <0001>, <1010> or <1120> for hexagonal dose-packed metals, parallel to the stress axis. 2. What the evidence prevails upon the mind to believe, depends upon the mind as well as upon the evidence. M. L. IN a recent discussion of the mineral resource position of the United States, published in the September 1946 issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, I expressed my conviction that ore deposits of major magnitude remain to be found in this country and that they can be found without undue cost or risk. I stated with equally strong conviction, however, that if the search for such deposits is to be notably successful there must be, among other things, a reorientation of philosophy and mental habits on the part of many who would be connected with the search. I would now like to enlarge upon that statement. For such a purpose, we may consider that the search for concealed deposits involves four steps: (I) the selection of areas for further study; (2) the geologic study of those areas in order to verify their general favorableness and in order to choose specific patches worthy of being tested; (3) the decision whether exploration of the patches chosen should actually be undertaken; and (4) the exploration itself. The first two steps and the last rest upon the judgment and skill of geologists. The third step-the decision whether exploration should be undertaken-rests upon management. In my opinion, the philosophies or principles that have guided these steps in the past are now inadequate. PHILOSOPHY OF APPRAISAL If concealed deposits are to be looked for, how are the places of their possible concealment to be recognized? Every known mineralized area still in the prospect stage has already been repeatedly examined and condemned. As for those deposits concealed under later rocks, there may be not even the clue of a near-by outcrop for engineer or geologist to consider. How then, are we to know where to look? Geologic Probability In the early days of our mining industry, ore deposits were found mainly by "following the ore." Later, as such opportunities decreased, and as geologic concepts became accepted, deposits were found more and more through use of the notion of geologic probability. Many instances can be cited wherein a courageous operator ignored the implications of the unsuccessful efforts of predecessors and, solely by "following the ore," converted a discredited prospect into a good mine. Similar experience doubtless will occur in the future, but "following the ore" will no longer in itself find new deposits in the amount needed. Nor can enough new ore be expected from further use of the notion of geologic probability, for, as mentioned above, our known prospects `have already been ex-

The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media has been solved numerically only for the case of linear or radially symmetric reservoirs. A recently introduced numerical method for solving the unsteady-state heat flow equation in two dimensions is applied to the calculation of the depletion of a square region containing a perfect gas. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimensionless parameters. The solutions are compared with published .solutions for radial reservoirs. I NTR ODUCTION The problem of unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media gives rise to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. Numerical approximations to solutions of the gas flow problem have been obtained by the stepwise solution of an associated difference equation1,2. However, the methods so far developed have required that the reservoir be either linear or radially symmetric. This restriction in shape has been necessary so that only two independent variables be considered, namely, one distance variable and time. In order to deal with reservoirs having more realistic shapes, it is necessary to develop numerical procedures for the solution of the gas flow problem involving two distance variables. A numerical procedure, denoted as the alternating-direction implicit method, for the solution of the heat-flow problem in two dimensions has recently been introduced" By the use of this procedure, approximate solutions have been obtained for heat-flow problems in a square8, and in regions having various non-rectangular boundariesa. Because of the similarity between the equation for heat conduction in solids and the equation for gas flow in porous media, it is reasonable to expect that the alternating-direction implicit method should also be useful for solving the gas flow problem in various two-dimensional regions. Solutions have been calculated for the simplest two-dimensional region, a square reservoir with a single well in the center. While reservoirs of such simple geometry seldom, if ever, exist, the solution of this problem is of some practical importance because it is also the solution of another problem, that of determining the depletion history about an individual well in an infinite uniform reservoir containing wells spaced throughout on a square lattice and producing equally from each well. Finally, it is of interest to compare solutions for a square reservoir with those for a circular reservoir and to determine the effect of the shape of the boundary for that particular case. The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

Idarado Mining Company&apos;s mill and surface plant are at the portal of the Treasury tunnel at elevation 10,625 ft, 12 miles south of Ouray, Colo. In 1943 and 1944 this tunnel was extended in a westerly direction to tap the Black Bear vein, and, together with the recently completed 1100-ft inclined Treasury raise, provides access to the Black Bear mine. In 1945 a 250-ton mill was placed in operation to process development ores containing much needed copper, lead and zinc for war requirements, and to serve as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. In the years 1902 to 1927 some 329,000 tons of ore were produced from mine workings on the Black Bear vein that extended downward from elevation I2,325 ft at the Black Bear tunnel portal to elevation 11,618 ft, the lowest level of the mine. The ores were taken to the Cascade and Smuggler-Union mills near Telluride over two aerial tramways. Gold bullion, a copper-lead concentrate, and a zinc concentrate were produced. Ores The Black Bear is a compound fissure vein that has undergone several stages of mineralization. The first important stage is represented by complex ores of copper. lead and zinc in a quartz gangue. Precious metal content in this stage is low. The galenn is argentiferous and varying amounts of tetrahedrite, freibergite and bornite tend to increase the normal copper content represented in chalcopyrite. The zinc occurs as a true sphalerite with little or no iron. Later re-openings of the fissure took place more or less co-extensively with the successive introduction of (I) abundant quartz gangue containing minor amounts of chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; (2) free gold in a fluoritic quartz gangue; and (3) barren, low-grade quartz with minor amounts of pyrite as the only important sulphide. The sulphides show practically no oxidation and little mineralogic inter-growth. Because of the common overlapping of these successive stages of mineralization within a given mining area, considerable dilution of the base-metal content takes place, thus lowering the average mill-head grade. Plant Practice Metallurgical testing was started shortly after the Black Bear vein was encountered on Treasury tunnel level in 1944. Laboratory tests showed good flotability of the minerals in the ore and indicated an economic separation could be made of the copper, lead and zinc minerals into their respective concentrates. The success of the separation is close reagent control to maintain a balance between promotion and depression of the sulphides. To maintain this balance reagent consumption for the three metal separation is considerably higher than in ordinary lead-zinc flotation.

A quantitative explanation is offered for the peculiar curled grain shapes found in the microstructures of drawn wires of bcc metals and compressed aluminum specimens. It is shown that once an [011] fiber texture is developed, the slip system are so oriented that further slip tends to produce plane strain rather than axially symmetric flow of individual grains. With plane -strain flow, however, compatibility of neighboring grains can be maintained only by a bending of grains about one another. PROBABLY the most obvious microstructural feature of heavily worked metals is the distorted shapes of grains. In the course of deformation, the shape change of each grain must be compatible with that of neighboring grains; otherwise holes would be formed at grain boundaries. In analyses of poly-crystalline deformation by Taylor and subsequent workers it was assumed that grain boundary compatability was maintained by each grain undergoing the same shape change as the polycrystalline aggregate in which it is imbedded. According to this assumption, when simple tension or compression is applied to a random polycrystal or to one with a fiber texture, each grain ought to deform with axially symmetric flow. Initially equiaxed grains should become cigar-shaped during wire drawing and pancake-shaped during compression. While microstructural observations of deformed metals are generally in accord with such a picture, certain striking exceptions may be noted. Peck and Thomas5&apos;8 found that grains in heavily drawn tungsten, iron, and niobium (columbium) wires become shaped like ribbons curled about the wire axis, Fig. 1. At a suggestion from the author, they rationalized the development of these micro-structures by considering the orientation of the slip systems in the [011] texture formed by the wire drawing. It is shown in this paper that marked departure from axially symmetric flow of grains is also observed when polycrystalline aluminum is severely compressed. Again the explanation must lie in the orientation of the slip system in the [011] texture, which is formed in fcc metals by compression.&apos; THEORY A simple quantitative argument will be presented to show that the development of these microstructures is a result of flow on the combination of slip systems for which the minimum amount of mechanical work is expended in producing a unit tensile (or compressive) strain. First it must be realized that the macroscopic strains of a crystal resulting from slip are given by: where d dy, and dc, are normal strain increments parallel to the x, y, and z reference axes; are crystallographic shear-strain increments on slip systems

Results of the application of geo1ogic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program&apos;s beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphi-cally controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore. A routine program of grade control was started in the White Pine mine in August 1961. The program is based upon development and application of geologic knowledge to assist mine operating personnel to increase the grade of ore, primarily by accurate stratigraphic control and selection of areas for development on the basis of grade distribution trends. Geologists work closely with mine supervisors to offer the necessary geologic guidance. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION OF COPPER The important rock series in the White Pine area is comprised of three formations of late Precambrian age. In descending order they are the Freda sandstone, Nonesuch shale, and Copper Harbor conglomerate. The Nonesuch shale is about 600 ft thick. Economic copper concentration occurs only in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the formation; however, within a restricted area along the southwest side of the mine the uppermost 1 to 7 ft of the Copper Harbor conglomerate (lower sandstone) contain sufficient quantities of copper to be included in the ore column. The ore consists primarily of chalcocite with subordinate native copper disseminated in shales, siltstones, and sandstones. MINE BOUNDARIES AND STRUCTURE The mine area is bounded on the west by the sub-outcrop of basal Nonesuch at bed rock surface and on the southwest by the White Pine fault (Fig. 1). The south and southeast limit of the orebody is reasonably well delineated by thinning or pinch-out of favorable host beds. Northern, northeastern, and eastern limits have not been established. The White Pine fault is actually a wide zone of shearing which strikes approximately N 40° W. It is downthrown on the southwest side and dips steeply to the northeast. Maximum vertical displacement is about 1500 ft.

VERY little is known of the economical value of the coal-betas of. the State of Texas. The first authentic statement in regard to their occurrence is that contained in the reports of the United States Explorations for the Pacific Railroad, near the 32d parallel of latitude, published in 1853-55. Professor William P. Blake reports, "that a number of seams of bituminous coal, varying, in thickness from two to four feet, have been opened along the Brazos River, in Young County, about one hundred and fifty miles west of Fort North." Dr: Shumard also states, "that the characteristic fossil forms of the Carboniferous Era have been found with this coal, and considers the ago of the formation established. Fossils obtained from the carboniferous limestone remove all doubt of the age of these deposits."† In the spring of 1879, I was called upon by. some Eastern capitalists to make an examination of the Brazos coal-field, in order to obtain the thickness, extent, and value of the coal which could be mined and be- made merchantable for steam, heating, and metallurgical purposes. The demand for coal in this section of the country is great, and a fuel. which in our Eastern markets might be considered of inferior quality, would here find a ready sale. It must be remembered that the market value of a coal does not depend upon its absolute purity, but upon its actual value in heat units which it is capable of producing. A poor coal which can be cheaply mined near the: consumer, is infinitely more remunerative to a mining company than a superior coal whose cost to the consumer is greatly increased by high mining charges and railroad freights. The value of the Texan coals does not depend upon their purity but upon their low first cost and nearness to a market. A glance at a geological map of the United States, will show that the Brazos coal-field is the extreme southwestern extension of what may be called the Missourian, Fourth or Western, bituminous coal * I am permitted by the gentlemen for whom the examination was made to publish the general statements contained in this paper. † Macfarlane&apos;s Coal Regions of America. More recently brief mention has been made of the coal-field in the pamphlets of the State geological survey. These reports are, however, too general, too indefinite, and too impracticable to permit of any conclusions as to the value of the coal as an economical, merchantable fuel.

Titanium with up to 7.5 pct Al forms single-phase a alloys that are work hardening, not heat treatable, and ductile as welded. The high aluminum Y phase alloys are not usefully ductile, despite their low hardness, but they have excellent oxidation resistance and hot hardness. LITTLE has been published on the effect of aluminum on the mechanical properties of titanium, despite the fact that two of the first four commercial alloys released by titanium alloy producers contained aluminum as an important alloying ingredient. These were both a-ß type alloys, one containing 4 pct A1 and 4 pct Mn and the other containing 3 pct A1 and 5 pct Cr. However, neither of these alloys reflects the true alloying nature of aluminum, since each contains important amounts of the ß-stabilizing addition, manganese or chromium. In a previous publication on the constitution of Ti-A1 alloys,&apos; the authors showed that aluminum had a high solubility in a titanium and was strongly a stabilizing in nature. About 25 wt pct A1 is soluble in a titanium at room temperature. With as little as 5 pct added aluminum, the a transus temperature is increased from 882" to 970°C, and the correspond- ing ß transus to 995°C. The first intermediate phase in the Ti-A1 system is the ordered face-centered tetragonal TiAl phase, which extends from 34 to 46 wt pct Al. The present paper presents hardness data over the entire titanium-rich region of the system, through the TiAl phase, and mechanical property data on the alloy range capable of being fabricated. Methods of Investigation The materials used and general preparation of alloys, as well as experimental techniques used in the investigation of Ti-A1 alloys, have been adequately described.&apos; Briefly, the preparation consisted of arc-melting the desired amount of high purity aluminum (99.99 pct purity) and iodide titanium (maximum hardness 100 Vickers, as deposited) together on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial pressure of argon. The resulting button ingot was of such form that it could be fabricated without further treatment. All work was done using ingots weighing 10 to 15 g, which were hot-rolled to strip form whenever possible. Tensile samples were 3.25 in. long, 0.5 in. wide, and 0.040 in. thick, with a reduced section 1.25 in. long by 0.250 in. wide. The gage length used was 1 in. Electrical strain gages mounted on the

AfteR investigating the work of coal-dust fired reverberatories of the Canadian Copper Co., at Copper Cliff, Ontario, the management of the Washoe Reduction Works decided to experiment with and ascertain the advantages of using coal dust as a fuel in their reverberatories. Consequently, during the month of June, 1914, reverberatory furnace No. 8 was changed in order to use powdered coal as a fuel. The results obtained by this method of firing are gratifying and show a decided saving in cost of smelting as compared to grate firing with lump coal. The furnace, as remodeled, is 124 ft. long by 21 ft. wide, and varies in height from 8 ft. 6 in. at the back end to 5 ft. 7 in. at the skimming end. The general construction of the furnace is similar to that of the other furnaces at this plant. There are no side doors to this furnace, as it was thought that with the present arrangement for feeding no "fettling" or "claying" would be required. The interior of the furnace can be inspected through the burner port holes, after shutting off the burners and giving a few seconds&apos; time for the gases inside the furnace to clear away. The charging is done on either side of the furnace from longitudinal hoppers, extending a distance of 74 ft. from the back end of the furnace. Leading from the hoppers into the furnace are 6-in. pipes, spaced 191/4 in. apart, through which the charge is intermittently dropped. The charge is kept well above the slag line at all times; in this way the side walls are protected and no fettling is needed on this portion of the furnace. The remainder of the furnace requires fettling. After operating for three months, we found that the bricks were eaten into along each side wall from the skimming door back to the point where the charge had been dropped. The depth of this cutting away was 8 in. close to the front end and gradually tapered to zero at a distance of 50 ft., and was greatest on the side of the furnace having the larger flue connection. Hoppers will be put in for the entire length of furnace, from which fettling material will be dropped, to prevent this cutting. After the run of three months, the roof was in excellent condition. At the back of the furnace the bricks were not cut into at all; at 30 ft.

APRIL BEGAN with increased disorder in the Ruhr and some blood-shed. The war cloud in the East disappeared, however, with the signifi- cance by the Turks of their intention to return to Lausanne to negotiate a treaty of peace with the Allies. The French occupation of the Ruhr continued during April without there being any spectacular develop-ments. Of course there was surliness on the part of the Germans. In the meanwhile the statesmen on both sides were intimating what they might give and what they might take, sounding the sentiment of their respective populaces. The British Government found that its revenue for the last fiscal year has been greatly in excess of expenses. The surplus was applied to reduction of the debt. A consequence of this development has been a reduction in British taxes for the ensuing year, which has naturally created a much better feeling in Great Britain. On the other hand the unemployment situation in Great Britain caused increasing alarm. At the begin-ning of April about 1,500,000 men were out of work and the thought was developing that this might be not merely a temporary emergency, but a long continuing condition. The uneasiness of the workers themselves began to be exhibited in increasing strikes and threats of strikes. There were important domestic events during April. The six miners who were on trial in Illinois for the Herrin massacre were acquitted, following which the State dropped further prosecutions on the ground that Williamson County is so thoroughly under labor domina-tion that justice could not be had there. The Supreme Court of the United States on Apr. 10 handed down a decision that an act of Congress fixing minimum wages for women in the District of Columbia was unconstitu-tional, being interference with the freedom of contract included within the guarantees of the fifth amendment. Advances of wages became more general during April. The leading event under this head was the action of the United Steel Corporation putting into effect an.11 per cent. increase in the wages of common labor on Apr. 16, by virtue of which the rate per hour was raised from 36 c. to 40 c. This was dictated by competitive conditions, the labor difficulties of the steel industry being due less to a scarcity of men than their disinclination to take jobs in that industry while the building and other industries were paying as high as 60 c. per hour for similar work.

Simplified equipment and techniques have been developed to permit cementing a completion interval in a well and recompleting higher, lower, or at the same depth in such a manner as to: 1. Eliminate the need for a conventional drilling or workover rig. 2. Eliminate mud and other cement contaminants which have long interferred with ideal cementing. 3. Eliminate need for drilling out cement. 4. Provide a more satisfactory recompletion. 5. Provide a more economical recompletion. This technique involves the use of a small-diameter, lightweight, tubing extension which is run on a wireline and set in a landing nipple previously installed in the tubing string. Low squeeze pressure and small cement volumes, with their attendant cost reduction, are successfully used when wells are completed and reworked with salt water or other penetrating fluids. Relatively low-water-loss cement is an integral component of the technique which provides that excess cement be reverse-circulated from the well to leave the casing void of cement when recompleting lower or in the same interval. Substantial cost reductions are realized by using the simplified or low-pressure cementing technique, and the ratio of successful squeeze-cement operations has been increased. Squeeze-cementing or recementing is the act of filling a channel behind casing or filling holes purposely placed in the casing. To obtain a satisfactory squeeze-cement job, it is necessary only to fill the channel or the perforation holes with a cement filter cake and to allow it to harden in that position. In the past, the presence of mud in a well has been considered the chief deterrent to obtaining a good cement bond and satisfactory cement job; however, late developments in squeeze-cementing have made it possible to eliminate cement contamination or interference. Since it is possible to form a cement filter cake with a small pressure differential, squeeze-cementing with high pressures may not be necessary in most cases. The amount of cement needed to fill the annulus about the casing and even to fill part of the casing, if necessary, is generally small in quantity. Use of low squeeze-cementing pressures and small quantities of cement provides the following advantages: 1. Longer effective life of well tubing, casing, and other equipment; and less chance of costly equipment failure due to excessive pressure. 2. Monetary savings effected by elimination of retainers and specal squeeze-cementing tools. 3. Monetary savings effected by use of small quantities of cement and fewer squeeze-cementing operations. 4. Future surface squeeze-cementing equipment may be smaller and more economical to operate and maintain.

The following additional notes about prices of coal in the early days were collected from the sources shown. Several data about canal tolls and labor conditions are also included. 1796, November: "The inhabitants lay it (coal) in at about 3;d. (83¢) sterling per bushel." (Ref. 73: p. 147.) 1804, March: "In March, 1804, I sent a person accustomed to mining to open the vein of coal, and to load the ark, which was accomplished, and early in the month of April the ark, with the first cargo of bituminous coal passed safely the Conewago falls, and landed her coal at Columbia, Lancaster County. The coal was sold at 31¢ per bushel at Columbia." ($7.75 per ton). This was the first coal from Clearfield County near the town of that name. (Letter from William Boyd: Pa. Senate Jour., 1833-1834, vol. 2, p. 561.) 1807: The following notice appeared in the Bedford Gazette: "Huntingdon, June 4. "Stone Coal.-Such of the farmers as wish to make experiment with stone coal as a substitute for plaster, in manuring their Indian corn, may be supplied with coal gratis upon application to Peter Hughes, at Mr. Riddle&apos;s mines, on the Raystown Branch. The proprietor of the mines offers not only to refund the carriage, but to pay the expenses of applying the coal, if upon a fair experiment it is found to be inferior to plaster, which now sells at two dollars per bushel." (Ref. 735: p. 708.) 1809: Coal was delivered in Pittsburgh at 5¢ per bushel or $1.25 per net ton. (Ref. 444: p. 50.) Coal was delivered in Connellsville at 4¢ per bushel or $1.00 per net ton. (Ibid.: p. 185.) 1810: Pittsburgh.-"Coal may be obtained of a good quality, ready delivered at 5¢ a bushel." ($1.25 per net ton.) (Ref. 315: vol. 2.) 1811: "It (coal) costs 6¢ a bushel at your door." Arc-melted and electron-beam melted tantalum in the cold-worked and the recrystallized conditions showed high strength, good tensile ductility, and excellent notch toughness down to 321°F. Arc-melted material, containing moderate amounts of interstitials, possessed better short-time strength than higher purity electron-beam melted material up to 2000°F. Cold-working substantially strengthened arc-melted tantalum, whereas electron-beam melted material exhibited a low work-hardening rate and possessed better formability characteristics. With identical compositions and microstructures, the mechanical properties of melted tantalum and uacuum-sintered tantalum should be similar. TANTALUM metal usage is increasing rapidly in a number of applications. The outstanding chemical corrosion resistance of tantalum accounts for its applications in chemical processing equipment for severe service conditions and for surgical uses in the medical field. The largest present requirements for tantalum are in the electronics industry, where its special properties are useful in capacitors. The high melting point (5425°F) and inherent ductility of tantalum also suggest that tantalum and tantalum-base alloys might offer an excellent combination of high strength at very high temperatures and good fabri-cability. Pure tantalum has been used in significant amounts in parts requiring high-temperature strength, such as heating elements, reflectors, and heat shields in high-vacuum high-temperature furnaces and in electronic tubes. A few very promising tantalum-base alloys have been developed and are being investigated extensively. The possibilities for tantalum as a high-temperature structural material, either unalloyed or alloyed, will become better defined when more extensive mechanical property data are known. pughl measured the tensile properties of vacuum-sintered tantalum in sheet form for the temperature range of 78" to 1500°K (-321&apos; to 2240°F), and Bechtold reported data obtained at low temperatures.&apos; Drennen3 determined creep and stress-rupture properties of both vacuum-sintered and arc-melted tantalum sheet at 1200 °F. Some additional data on the mechanical properties of tantalum at temperatures up to 5000 °F have been summarized elsewhere.4&apos;5 It is probable that large structural shapes of tantalum, either unalloyed or alloyed, can most readily be produced from ingots prepared by melting. Consequently, the present investigation was undertaken to determine more extensive short-time mechanical properties of tantalum metal consolidated by melting. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Melting and Fabrication—Two tantalum ingots were utilized in this study to obtain information on the effect of interstitial elements on mechanical properties. Both ingots were melted from Union Carbide Metals Co. tantalum dendrites.

That lead and zinc deposits are the result of prolonged,, slow deposition is the idea of most students of ore deposits, and in many cases, where the ore-bearing solutions have been very weak or the precipitating conditions have been very feeble, the ore accumulations have undoubtedly taken a long period of time. As these two vital conditions have been subject to great variations in the different mining camps, the following example is highly interesting in showing that deposition can be very rapid under favorable conditions, geologically speaking, and also extremely recent. In fact, the writer is inclined to regard most, if not all, of the Mississippi Valley deposits of lead and zinc as probably being very young, at least not older than Tertiary, if not Quarternary, in age. The extensive Joplin lead and zinc district, in southwestern Missouri, which is about 60 years old and has numerous mines that were abandoned from 1 to 50 years ago, shows that the lead and zinc today are in an active condition of solution and redeposition, although these two metals occur in the predominant form of sulfides. The mine waters from the older and more or less abandoned portions of the district are frequently so acid, mainly from the oxidation of associated pyrite, as to necessitate the use of wooden pipes and pumps. The first boom in the Oklahoma zinc fields, which is the southwestern extension of the Joplin district, occurred when ore was accidentally struck in drilling a water well. Among the mines then opened up was the Mission mine, at Lincolnville, Ottawa County, Okla. This mine was opened in 1903 in lean "sheet ground," or a flat blanket formation of chert carrying disseminated zinc blende, or "jack," and galena. Theore-body was very free from iron pyrites and the concentrates were very high grade, the "mineral," or lead concentrates, assayed 80 to 85 per cent. lead and the jack, or sphalerite, assayed 60 to 65 per cent. zinc. The orebody was very shallow, occurring at a depth of 76 to 95 ft. (22 to 28 m.) and very wet, requiring three or four pumps to handle the water. The mine was operated until 1914, when it was closed by litigation and immediately filled with water. The second Oklahoma boom, five years ago, opened up the large, active camps of Picher, Tar River, and Century, which are located 2 to 5 mi. west of Lincolnville. They are considerably deeper, being farther down on the westwardly dipping monocline that emanates from the Ozark
