THE zinc-lead mines of the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. are situated in the Tri-state district of Oklahoma-Missouri-Kansas. The company is operating, at the present time, seven mines in the brecciated deposits of the Picher, Okla., camp; two in the water-course ground of the Treece, Kans., camp; two in the open, boulder ground of the Crestline, Kans., camp; and one in the sheet ground of the Pierce City, Mo., camp. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the relation of the rich narrow runs to the other ore-bodies of the district. The runs are designated by cross-hatching so as to distinguish them from narrow drifts that have been driven as prospect drifts or haulage drifts. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are cross-sections showing the type of formation encountered in the operation of the drills. The Picher camp is in the brecciated type of deposit with some water-course ground encountered, usually near the edge of the deposit. These deposits are flat and fairly uniform so that they can be mined systematically. However, scattered between these deposits are narrow runs that are usually very rich. Up to the present time, most of the prospecting has been done from the surface with churn drills, supplemented with some prospect drifts in the ground, once the mine is opened up. Prospect drifts are expensive, do not give much information except the presence or absence of ore and are therefore not used to any great extent. In the early days of the camp only the larger deposits were found and mined, with an occasional narrow run which was drilled out more or less by sheer luck. Later, more of these narrow rich runs were found and mined, until today many of the properties that were formerly considered worked out are being leased and re-drilled. It is very evident that many of these narrow runs, which are often only 20 ft. wide, can easily be missed by drilling from the surface unless very close drilling is practiced. William B. Phillips, Birmingham, Ala.: The questions raised by Messrs. Wilkens and Nitze are in the highest degree interesting to owners of low-grade iron-ores, aizd no less so to blast-furnace managers. If it can be shown that ores heretofore considered worthless can be brought within the limit of economic use, many large and readily accessible deposits may come into market on the one hand, while on the other the possible increase in the output of the furnace per ton of ore used will prove of advantage to the iron-maker. It cannot, of course, be claimed that this process has been employed on a working-scale with respect to iron-ores, and in so far as concerns results on a large scale no one is any wiser than his fellow. Granting that the results obtained in an experimental way (and certainly the experiments were conducted with a great deal of care) can be attained in practice, we would still be facing the question, what it would cost to get them. In the absence of any specific data, we have to fall back on general principles, helped along, as far as possible, by indications afforded by the experiments. I must confess that as regards the Clinton ores, which I have studied to some extent, I am not sanguine of making a ton of 53 to 54 per cent. concentrates from less than 1.75 tons of 40 per cent. raw ore. It may be possible to get the iron in the heads to 56 to 57 per cent., but the lesser richness of the middlings will probably reduce this to 53 to 54 per cent. in the salable stuff. As the authors remark, it is not worth while to discuss the concentration of the better grades of " soft" Clinton ore; for the price at which they are now delivered at the furnaces, and the comparatively limited amount now remaining, render their concentration unadvisable. I. M. E., through their monthly meetings, a report of the year's progress is almost superfluous. ' To the members who read the monthly reports of the Board Meetings and of the various activities of the Institute as published each month, a yearly report cannot carry much fresh information; yet for both it may be well, as is the custom, to glance over the field of our activities during the past year, and to make an estimate for the year to come. The beginning of 1924 was not propitious for the members of the mining profession, though tonnage production for 1923 had been high and the gross value higher than for several years. The margin of profit had been narrow, prospecting and development were limited, and many of our members were unemployed or were working in other industries. Toward the end of the year, higher metal prices were in sight. Old-time optimism began to grow, and it now brightens the outlook for 1925. An excellent barometer of the prosperity of the industry, and that of the Institute, for they go hand in hand, is the work of our Employment Bureau. During the past few months, the percentage of our members for whom openings have been found has been increasing to a marked extent, and many members who had fallen in arrears are placing themselves in good standing. The number of new members joining has remained about as it was in 1922 and 1923. The Directors have reason to congratulate themselves on the interest maintained during a dull period, for it is not humanly possible to take a keen interest in the technology of an industry when our hands and minds are not actively engaged in it Now, with a much brighter outlook, we can look forward to a year of increasing prosperity for the industry and for the Institute.

Advancement in the art of burning fuels for steam generation has been so marked and so rapid in the last 10 or 15 years that one may well hesitate to classify as unsuitable for stationary steam boiler firing any material having a fuel value. This statement should not be interpreted to mean that any existing boiler plant can successfully utilize any fuel with which it might be supplied. It does mean, however, that almost without exception it is possible to design and construct stationary boiler plants so that they can be operated with whatever coal is the economic supply therefor. In considering the subject of the use classification of coals, it must be recognized, first, that the suitability or unsuitability of a coal for certain uses or conditions may be largely a matter of opinion and, second, that as advancement in the art of burning fuels continues, fuels that may have been considered unsuitable may later be regarded as entirely suitable. This is well illustrated in the creation of a market for slack bituminous coal and for the finer sizes of anthracite that resulted from the development of mechanical stokers adapted thereto. Coke breeze is another fuel of which large tonnages were formerly wasted, that has now been found suitable for use in properly designed furnaces. Again, results that would have been thought quite impossible a generation ago are being obtained in steam boiler plants today with lignites of high moisture content and with coals of excessive ash content. It must, however, be admitted that oftentimes an existing boiler plant can be successfully operated with only a limited number of the coals that are available as possible supplies. We may briefly consider some of the more important factors that may affect the suitability of coals for such a plant. Insufficient or barely sufficient draft to meet peak steam demands is often a limiting factor, and the permissible frequency of fire-cleaning periods is another. In some cases, the action of the molten coal ash on refractory furnace linings prohibits or makes inadvisable the use of certain coals. The Elk City mining district of Idaho occupies a position near the geographical center of Idaho county, a region of moderate elevation in the western foot-hills of the Bitter Root mountains. The district comprises an area of approximately 350 Sq. miles, bounded on the west by the Newsome district and on the south by the Dixie and Oro Grande districts. There are no mining districts to the north or east. Elk City, the principal town and the seat of the mining office for the district, is situated in a hydrographical basin surrounded by low hills. The elevation is 4,200 ft. above sea-level. Through this basin flow Elk Creek, Red river, and American river, which unite west of town to form the south fork of the Clearwater. The one township is set out from the Bitter Root Forest Reserve. Though a railroad starting from the Stites terminus of the Clearwater Short Line of the Northern Pacific railroad has been under consideration for some years, the camp is yet without railroad facilities. The projected road would follow the south fork of the Clearwater on easy grades, but would be very expensive to build and maintain. While such a road would greatly benefit those who are now operating in the camp, and in a sligh degree stimulate interest in its possibilities, there is hardly business enough to warrant its construction. At present all supplies and equipment are hauled in by wagon from Stites, a distance of 58 miles, over a wagon road constructed by the State in 1904, following in the main the old Nez Perce trail. While this is not a bad road, it is not all that might be desired. Starting at Stites at an elevation of 1,327 feet above sea-level, the road runs through low hills to Clearwater, a distance of 10 miles. In the next 16 miles the climb is steady until the Mountain House is reached, which is near the summit of Mount Pisgah. This is the highest point passed on the road, having an elevation of 6,500 ft. A method using computer techniques is described for the comparative evaluation of truck performance over any given haul road using readily obtainable manufacturers' data. An additional computer program is utilized to calculate individual cycle times for each truck and shovel combination, fleet requirements for any desired production rate, and to estimate comparative costs. The introduction of a large number of variables into the program permits management to determine the critical system factors having the greatest bearing on costs. Thus, the method described can be used not only for analysis of needs for a new surface mine but for cost improvement in existing mines where changes in truck and shovel operations are contemplated. The systems analysis approach to the solution of problems in the mining industry is gaining in industry acceptance. This is a logical development in view of the fact that a mine constitutes one of the most dynamic systems of production. In contrast with a manufacturing plant, situated in a location selected through choice and utilizing a regulated source of quality controlled raw materials, the miner must go where the ore is and he is faced with ever changing physical conditions. He is subjected to the vagaries of nature, and he can never mine the same ore twice. What is systems engineering? There seems to be no concise and universally accepted definition of the term and its meaning is still fairly local. It deals largely with trade-offs of subsystem characteristics to achieve some desired result in an overall system. This concept of suboptimization can be explained by an example. If the objective of a mining company is to produce a certain quality ore at minimum cost, the optimum operation is not achieved by minimizing all costs, since all phases of mining are interrelated. Reduction of blasting costs might well increase loading, hauling, and crushing costs out of proportion to the resulting saving in explosives. Hence tradeoffs are necessary. It is evident then that an optimum system is achieved through a blending of suboptimal components which taken together yield the desired result. OBJECTIVE For our mathematical model we will assume the existence of a hypothetical new organization called Taconite Mining Co. (TMC). THE Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines, has been working for several years on the mechanism of desulphurization of iron and steel by slags. The usual assumption that desulphurization takes place by diffusion of FeS from metal into slag and subsequent reaction of this FeS with CaO to produce CaS has seemed to us inconsistent with a number of experimental results we have obtained. We undertook, for example, to determine the proportion of sulphur in a slag present as FeS. An entirely satisfactory method of doing this has not yet been evolved. The results of extraction with metallic antimony led to an interesting conclusion, however. FeS is readily soluble in metallic antimony, either physically or by chemical reaction. On the other hand, CaS was found to be insoluble. Hence it would appear that by rapid extraction of the slag with antimony we might expect to determine the distribution of sulphur between iron and calcium. The results showed that much of the sulphur was present as FeS. In some instances the extraction of sulphur as FeS was almost quantitative. For example, in a slag containing 3.8 grams Fe and 3.7 grams S, extraction removed 1.18 grams S and 2.12 grams Fe. If all the iron present in the antimony had been FeS, 1.21 grams S would have been extracted. In another slag with 8.6 grams Fe and 0.06 gram S present, 0.14 gram Fe and 0.08 gram S were extracted. This was obviously extraction of sulphur as FeS within the analytical error and showed that FeS was present either in solution or as a dispersion. Attempts to determine the solubility of FeS and CaS in slag by quenching and ultramicroscopic investigation have indicated that the solubility of FeS is very low, and that reactions in the slag are probably not to be considered as homogeneous. A more detailed report on these theoretical considerations will be made at a later date.

ManGanese is one of the minerals which is principally consumed in countries other than origin. Nearly 85 per cent. of the world's production is used by the United States, England, Germany and France, and roughly a third of the total is used by the United States alone. On the other hand, over 85 per cent. of the world production comes from Brazil, Russia, India, the Gold Coast of Africa and the Sinai Peninsula. It follows from this fact that practically all manganese moves across international boundaries in raw or alloy form, and much the larger part of this inovement is for considerable distances and is occan bornc. There is no indication that any one of the principal consuming countries can develop even approximately adequate supplies of its own. Under abnormal war conditions, with high prices and changes in metallurgical methods, only 35 per cent. of the needs of the United States was met from local sources, and under our recent tariff only 11 per cent. There are thousands of manganese deposits scattered about the world, but only a very few which can figure largely in supplying requirements on a modern scale. The known reserves, together with highly probable extensions and explorations now under way, indicate no shortage from a world standpoint for many deeades to come. The production and marketing of manganese is going steadily into fewer and stronger hands. The steel industry uses over 90 per cent. of all the manganese mined and is acquiring control of a considerable part of the production in all of the principal fields—the Germans in Nikopol, the English in India and Gold Coast, the Americans in Georgia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil. Some of the controlling companies arc of international scope. Concentration of commercial control is a notable tendency. A natural consequence is the growing uneasiness of smaller consumers the world over about their ultimate supplies and desire to know more definitely how and where manganese supplies will be controlled in the future. The sources of supply are few cnough to warrant the belief that more or less monopolistic elements of control arc not impossible.

The Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailcd results of tests on four typical samples. Mineralogy of Batjxite The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2HzO). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (AlzOa.3H20), diaspore (A120a.H20), and boehmite (Alr-03.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2Hz0). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. History of Batjxite Beneficiatjon The literature on bauxite beneficiation is limited, but the reports of Gandrud and DeVaneyl and Clemmer, Clemmons, and Stacy2 show the possibilities of flotation as a means of beneficiating bauxite. Their work has also developed reagent combinations that are satisfactory for flotation of gibbsite.

The Athens mine is in the city of Negaunee, Mich. It is one of the larger producers of soft hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The property is held under lease by the Athens Iron Mining Co., and is operated by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which is a partner with Pickands, Mather & Co. in the Athens company. The mine was opened in 1913, and shipments of ore commenced in 1918, the total reaching 3,063,711 tons up to Jan. 1, 1932. Diamond-drilling from surface, together with a knowledge of geological conditions in neighboring properties, gave a comprehensive picture of the location, size and shape of the orebody before shaft-sinking started. Striking east and west, the orebody entered the east boundary of the property at a depth of about 1500 ft. below surface. A pitch of 15" to the west carried it down to about 2500 ft. on the west boundary, about double the depth of that of any soft-ore property heretofore worked on the Marquette Range. The width of ore averaged close to 500 ft., and the thickness 300 feet. The depth of the deposit and its size, together with an overburden of quicksand, which in places reached a thickness of 150 ft., presented unusual mining problems. The use of a caving system made surface drainage into the orebody inevitable, because the north boundary of the deposit was a vertical diorite dike 200 ft. wide, and the south boundary a northward-dipping impervious slate. S. R. Elliott, manager of the mining department of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., who was superintendent of the mine at that time, conceived the idea of starting at the bottom of the orebody and working upward, reversing the usual mining procedure. This innovation divided the Athens orebody into a series of steps, or blocks, the first of which was adjacent to the western boundary, and therefore in the lowest portion of the deposit. Top-slicing was to start under the capping in this first block by raising from the bottom level, and development and mining were to progress upward in successive blocks to the east. INTRODUCTION THE intermetallic compounds Mg2Sn and Mg2Pb are two of the important series of stoichiometric compounds pounds which magnesium forms with elements of the fourth group of the periodic system, Since there is a complete series, of compounds, all possessing the same comparatively simple structure, a unique opportunity is presented to study their properties with respect to increasing atomic number of the anion as it varies from silicon and germanium, through tin and lead. The present work deals with the two lower members of this group, and it is hoped eventually that additional data regarding the silicide and germanide will be obtained. The results of such a complete study provide part of the essential basis for the empirical correlation and theoretical treatment which, in other systems, has contributed to an understanding of intermetallic compounds and the metallic state in general. Some experimental data are already available in the literature, However, they re fragmentary and limited in significance owing to the methods of preparation employed and the impure materials available at the time, It was our objective, therefore, using pure metals and improved metallurgical methods of preparation, to produce stoichiometric compounds of high purity for the study of their electrical and chemical properties. We felt that a detailed investigation of chemical properties, about which relatively little is known, combined with electrical properties, would be a significant contribution to the understanding of these compounds and in particular to the mechanism of corrosion associated with types of bonding in alloy systems. The chemical studies are reported elsewhere. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Previous work concerning the electrical properties of these compounds was undertaken in connection with the establishment of the two phase diagrams which are available in Hansen1 and Beck,2 The first comprehensive investigation of the electrical conductivity of magnesium-tin and magnesium-lead alloys was made by Kurnakov and Stepanov.3 This was followed by Grube and Vosskühler4 who studied electrical conductivity and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperature and who, unlike Stepanov, appreciated the significance of the large solid solubility of tin in magnesium and took some precautions to obtain an equilibrium state. ANY information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undis-turbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamina-tion by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been exten-sively studied by other investigators. 1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as being outside the scope of the present experiments, which were con-cerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essen-tial and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condi-tion while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program.

STRONTIUM is an essential constituent of celestite (strontium sulphate), of the rarer strontianite (strontium carbonate), and of a few very rare minerals. Celestite is the chief ore but strontianite is more valued except for making the purest strontium salts, because of its ease of processing. The public knows strontium mainly as the source of the red flame in fireworks but it has many other uses. PROPERTIES The celestite of commerce is a massive mineral of varying texture: coarsely crystalline, fibrous, bladed, very fine grained or earthy. The color varies greatly with the nature of the impurities but the purer specimens are light blue (Latin, caelum, sky) or white. The strontianite of commerce is a massive mineral, more or less coarsely crystalline. The color varies with the impurities. Distinctive characteristics are effervescence with acids, density (3.68 to 3.71), and crimson strontium flame. A typical British celestite before World War II analyzed: SrSO4, 96.55 pct; SrCO3, 0.17; BaSO4, 0.25; CaSO4, 0.54; MgCO3, 0.15; R20,, 0.90; Si02, 1.38.10 A German strontianite analyzed: SrCO3, 90.9 pct; CaCO3, 7.5; BaCO3, 0.1; Fe2O3, 0.05; A1203, 0.1; SiO2, 0.04; S, 0.1; P, 0.005.10 ORIGIN AND MODE OF OCCURRENCE According to Clarke,9 strontia forms about 0.02 pct of the crust of the earth and is present in most igneous rocks, but in smaller quantities than barium. Under certain conditions, large masses of celestite are deposited from sea water with anhydrite. The presence of large amounts of celestite in some saline deposits and its absence in others suggests that the deposition of celestite depends on whether certain as yet undetermined concentrations of sulphate and chloride ions are reached in the brines. The most extensive of these sedimentary deposits are those of the Keuper (Triassic) in England, of the Zechstein (Permian) in Germany, and of various Cretaceous formations in Texas, Arkansas, and Utah. THE Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailed results of tests on four typical samples. MINERALOGY OF BAUXITE The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (A1203.3H20), diaspore (A1203.H20), and boehmite (A1203.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. THE value of molybdenum as a ferroalloy has been known for many years. For a long time, however, the metal was used only on a small scale in the iron industries, because the known source of supply appeared inadequate and the cost to the consumer was not stabilized. The world's production of molybdenum prior to 1914 was only a few thousand pounds per year and even during the war period annual production was only about 800,000 lb. Production during 1929 and 1930, however, was over 4,000,000 lb. per year and that of 1931 promises to be of the same order of magnitude. This remarkable increase in production is due primarily to the development of a large molybdenite deposit at Climax, Lake County, Colo., which has accounted for 80 per cent of the world's production of molybdenum during the past two years. Based on conservative esti-mates, the deposit at Climax has the capacity to maintain its 1929 and 1930 rate of production for 100 years or more. The production of molybdenum ores has been established on a new basis-in recent years as compared with the period during and before the world war. During the earlier period, production came from small deposits and the cost to the consumer fluctuated. At present, production comes from a few large deposits and the price is not only lower but also fairly constant. In recent years the price of molybdenum has consistently dropped as consumption increased. The present price is $0.95 per pound of molybdenum in ferromolybdenum and $0.80 for molybdenum in calcium molybdate. Before and during most of the war, Australia, Norway, and a few other foreign countries were the chief producers, while at present the United States is producing over 90 per cent of the world's production. With molybdenum available at a moderate cost, the steel industry has been adopting more and more the use of molybdenum as an alloy addition. Although many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other intercsted parties to give out their "inside information " Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County, at this time. Locality and Description The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. LouisSan Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 21/2 hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75' west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south 45" east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parall el syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin south of the Cement anticfine. The positjon of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of-Cement, has not been discovered. TOPOGKAFHY In the southwest part of the state, nearly all maps of Oklahoma show two mountain areas—Arbuckle and Wichita—which are conspicuous geological and topographic landmarks. In addition, some maps show a third, and smaller, range, named the Keechi Hills, in the vicinity of Cement. Most of the recent discussion of the mineral land law published in the Transactions is in the abstract—an exception being Mr. Goodale's paper, The Apex Law in the Drumlummon Controversyll which illustrates in concrete instances many of the practical disadvantages of what Dr. Raymond has called "The Law of the Apex." The present paper, it is hoped, may serve a similar purpose, emphasizing the necessity for a change in our mining laws, and bringing home to mining engineers some of the defects and dangers of our present code. There are many storm centers of "apex litigation" in the Rocky Mountains; and not the 1east. of them is the Wardner camp, where such litigation has been almost continuous since 1892, and the end is not yet. In their decisions, the courts have accepted the claims of the litigants that the "Wardner vein" is a broad zone varying from 250 to 500 ft. in width at the surface. This is the simplest theory which could have been advanced, and probably decreased, rather than augmented, the number of contests; in fact, every one of the claim owners seemed to feel that the greatest advantage would accrue to him if this theory were adhered to. The dominant structural feature of the Wardner vein is a persistent fault, striking N. 40' W., dipping about 40" to the southwest and called the "Wardner foot wall." Fig. 1 is a composite of two adjacent cross-sections of the vein and is a fair representation of the relative size and shape of the orebodies and their relation to the "Wardner foot wall." The country rock is a comparatively thin-bedded sericitic quartzite which has an average strike of N. 80" W. and dips at high angles to the north and south. The movement on the Wardner foot wall is apparently normal, and there has been more or less brecciation on either side of it; but as the moving mass was that above the foot wall, the brecciation has been more complete on that side, and has extended farther from the plane of movement. . F. W. SPERR, JR.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.--Mr. Malcolmson states that the Carbocoal process produces ammonium sulfate in excess of that normally recovered in the ordinary byproduct coke process. Table 3 indicates that 20,000 to 25,000 lb. of sulfate of ammonia are obtained in carbonizing 1000 tons of Clinchfield coal. This is a high-grade coal and yields from 26 to 28 lb. of ammonium sulfate per ton in a modern byproduct coke oven. On the next page, 21 lb. is stated as the yield of ammonium sulfate per short ton of raw coal; this is less than the average production from any well operated byproduct coke-oven plant treating coal of the character usually coked, in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The statement as to the comparative yields of light oil is somewhat misleading in view of the results obtained during the past year or two by the more modern byproduct coke plants. The plants put in operation by the H. Koppers Co., during the past two years, are producing about 3.5 gal. of light oil per short ton of coal, and several of these plants are producing more than 4 gal. per ton. The yield of pure toluene runs from 0.45 gal. to 0.55 gal. per ton. .The quality of the light oil .obtained from the Carbocoal process is of much greater importance than would be inferred by one not closely familiar with the subject. The presence of paraffins in the benzol and toluol fractions seriously detracts from their commercial value; the benzol and toluol fractions derived fro in the Carbocoal process contain about 50 per cent, of paraffins. It should be thoroughly understood what these paraffins are. They are simply hydrocarbons that go to make up ordinary petroleum, and if a successful method for the removal of paraffins from benzol and toluol has been developed, this can at once be applied to several well known processes by which benzol and toluol can be made directly from petroleum, which have as yet been total failures on account of the contamination of these products by paraffins.
