The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. The experiences of Canex Placer Ltd. in establishing vegetation on a lead-zinc tailing pond are presented, hoping others with similar challenges will be benefited. History The tailing ponds are the result of 23 years of mining and milling operations, which ceased in August 1970. Roughly 7.9 million tons of lead-zinc ore were removed in that time. The ponds are located between Salmo River and B.C. Highway 3, about 8 miles north of Nelway near the Canada-U.S. border.

These districts are limited approximately on the north by the railroad from Salisbury to Ashville, and comprises the counties of Alexander, Catawba, Burke, Rutherford, McDowell, Cleveland, Lincoln, Polk and Henderson in North Carolina, and Greenville, Spartanburg, Union and York in South Carolina. The occurrence of monazite at Amelia Court House, in Virginia, belongs evidently to the same geological system, as its distance from the Alleghenies corresponds with that of the above-mentioned districts, and all the stratification runs parallel with those mountains.

Currently the underground potash mines in Canada extract about 40% of the available ore, leaving the other 60% behind in the form of stabilizing pillars. The presence of water in the overlying formations requires that any disturbance due to mining be such that no water will enter the workings. This paper deals with the factors that influence the stability of the rock surrounding the mine excavations and looks at the effects of these factors when a system of increasing the extraction is considered.

ANTHRACITE mining in the United States is concentrated in a 480 sq mile section of north- eastern Pennsylvania. The producing area is broken up into four fields, known as the Northern, Southern, Eastern Middle and Western Middle fields. These areas represent intricately folded coal measures in synclinal residuals left by erosional forces. Destruction by erosion has eliminated some 95 pct of the original coal. However, discounting the 5 billion tons removed to date, 8 billion tons are believed to be still recoverable.

BALL wear as observed in grinding installations is the combined result of mechanical wear and corrosion. Corrosion should be a linear function of the ball surface available. Ball corrosion, however, has been studied so little that its effect, although of great importance, cannot be included in the analyses given here. In a separate paper' it is shown that [ ] Exponent m is the slope of a straight line on logarithmic paper relating mill speed (on the abscissa) and mill capacity (on the ordinate).

For $100 a month plus expenses, Thomas A. Edison in 1879 hired a colorful adventurer named Frank McLaughlin to go west as a prospector. A few months later, McLaughlin triumphantly returned to the inventor's laboratory in Menlo Park, N. J. "On his shirt bosom and fingers sparkled glittering stones," recalled one of Edison's associates. These were only the tangible parts of his new trappings. In addition, McLaughlin "now wore the title of major which he acquired somewhere west of Omaha."

D ETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and dewatering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.1

The Half-Moon mine, situated three miles west of the town of Pioche, exhibits geological features which are peculiar and interesting. The general formation in the vicinity of Pioche consists of a quartzite, usually covered with an overlying limestone containing strata of shale. In the camp itself, where the original mines are situated, the quartzite has been denuded, and the principal veins outcrop in this formation; to the west, the quartzite is again covered with limestone, containing thin strata of shale.

CONCENTRATION of oxidized copper and lead ores by flotation has been practiced for 30 years, but flotation of oxidized zinc ores has remained unsolved until a few years ago. This problem is, however, of great importance in mining districts where large tonnages of oxidized zinc ores exist in underground mines or in dumps. Some sulphide ores also possess a degree of oxidation high enough to justify recovery of oxide zinc minerals. Various attempts have been made to float the zinc carbonate, smithsonite.

THE mining and removal of coal from two or more beds, either simultaneously or consecutively, in vertically adjacent areas have always been matters of concern to mine operators from both operating and recovery points of view. However, with the progressive introduction and use of electrical and mechanical facilities, such problems assume even greater proportions. In this paper typical cases occuring in Cambia County, Pa., are given and procedures whereby such problems may be greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated, are suggested.

This paper examines the contribution which econometric methods may be expected to make to the specification of commodity agreements, and how in turn computer methods may help in this. Continuous sintering-a metallurgical process for more than 50 years-has broadened from its origin in nonferrous metallurgy to present-day applications in ferrous, chemical, and nonmetallic fields. During the past year, self-fluxing sinter production has been a subject of active interest to iron metallurgists in North America. Accomplishments however, have come predominantly from Europe and proper interpretation of these reports requires an understanding of European raw materials and European economics. Fundamentals of cyclones are reviewed briefly, where a typical cyclone is considered. Graphical cyclone data available in the literature have been converted to mathematical equations for convenience. Preliminary selection and design procedures for both cyclones and pumps are provided, and a sample calculation for a hypothetical grinding circuit is covered in some detail. In general, cyclone and pump suppliers should be consulted for definitive design purposes. Some cyclone suppliers currently employ digital computers for definitive design to ensure greater accuracy.

In the hydrometallurgical circuit, many phase separation steps are usually necessary. Typical steps are pregnant liquor - leach residue separation by counter- current decantation or continuous vacuum filtration, clarification of liquids prior to precipitation, ion exchange or solvent extraction, dewatering of final product, etc. The paper discusses the more recent advances in these areas and considers general operating parameters and cost factors. In addition, emphasis is placed on future needs because of the growing importance and necessity of hydrometallurgical processing of minerals.

Normal phosphoric acid is H3P04, and consequently normal phosphates have the formulas R3PO4, R3(P04)2 and RPO4, and similarly for the arsenates, etc. Only a comparatively small number of species conform to this simple formula. Most species contain more than one metallic element, and in the prominent Apatite Group the radical (CaF), (CaCI) or (PbCI) enters; in in the Wagnerite Group we have similarly (RF) or (ROH).
