RECENTLY it has become the custom of retiring presidents to talk of the relations of the Institute to its membership and its constituency- and it seems a good precedent to follow. Past-president Smith reviewed our relations to materials and to society in general. Mr. Bradley spoke of the value and use of our publications and of our educational duties. My message will be in regard to the coordination of our various groups of member interests and of service to industry. This Institute has, within its organization, four divisions and fourteen technical committees--each interested in a separate put very definite subject, and each covering a phase of mining engineering interest. These vary from geology and the geophysical methods of prospecting, to the physics of the structure of metals, truly "from the mine to the consumer"-from the preparation for mining to the final use of that which has been mined.

The method of treating hazards wherein value is decreased, is cited by R. D. Parks. Quite properly, the theory of probabilities is made use of when multiple hazards are under consideration. E. F. Fitzhugh, Jr. deals with the enhancement phase graphically and uses percentage of expectancy as derived by a study of conditions and the selection of a chance factor. It is believed that both of the authors referred to fully recognize the part which human judgment plays, and as coupled with experience, training, and the application of the theory of probabilities; in that respect the composer of this paper is in accord. Within the past year, the task of arriving at a mathematical method for handling the enhancement phase, and, additionally, coupling the negative and positive phases, was explored. In citing the hazard, or negative phase, reference is made to the text by Parks.

Measurements have been made of the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of two specimens of 0.005-cm (2-mil) Be-Cufoil over the temperature range -140° to +200°C. The thermal cmductivity of Be-Cu Alloy 125 was found to be significantly higher than that of Alloy 25, which had a higher impurity content. The thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity values obtained were in concordance with the Smith and Palmer relation for copper alloys which states that ? = 0.0239 (T/p) + 0.075 where A is thermal conductivity (W cm-' deg-'), p is electrical resistivity (microhm-cm), and T is absolute temperature (OK) , indicating that the Smith and Palmer relation can be used to predict the thermal conductivity of this type of Be-Cu alloy over the temperature range -140" to + 200°C to within an accuracy suitable for most engineering applications. THE National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., requested the National Bureau of Standards to measure the thermal conductivity of 0.005-cm Be-Cu foil which was to be used to fabricate antennae for use in Radio Astronomy Explorer space craft. It was felt that measurements had to be made on the actual antenna material, rather than on a thick bar of similar material, since the cold-working and age-hardening properties of the alloy would make it very difficult, if not impossible, to place a thick bar in the same metallurgical state as the 0.005-cm material. As discussed in Section 111 of this paper, the thermal conductivity of many copper alloys can be computed rather accurately from electrical resistivity data using an empirical relation developed by Smith and palmer' and further confirmed by owell.' However, there has been very little work done on correlating thermal and electrical conductivities on Be-Cu alloys. We were reluctant to assume the validity of the Smith-Palmer relation on Be-Cu alloys because of the very large mass difference between beryllium and copper. As will be seen, however, our experimental results indicate that the Smith-Palmer relation is valid for the two alloys on which we made measurements. I) DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Samples of Be-Cu Alloy 25 and Be-Cu Alloy 125 were furnished to NBS in the form of rolled strip material, 0.005 cm thick by 5.08 cm wide. The Be-Cu Alloy 25 was purchased by NBS in the form of a continuous length of flat strip. The Be-Cu Alloy 125 was furnished to NBS by Goddard Space Flight Center in the form of two lengths of strip that had been formed into "tubing" of about 1.2 cm diam, with one side of the strip overlapping (but not connected to) the other side by about 90 deg. This "tubing" had been opened up to be flat and then rolled onto spools of about 3 cm diam. When unrolled, the strip would spring back into tubular form. Samples of both of the Be-Cu alloys were chemically analyzed by the NBS Analytical Chemistry Division. The beryllium content was determined quantitatively by the phosphate-gravimetric method to be 1.83 wt pct for Alloy 25 and 1.80 wt pct for Alloy 125. The two alloys were also examined by a general qualitative spectrochemical method for metallic elements. The Alloy 25 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 wt pct Al, Co, Fe, and Si and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Ni. The Alloy 125 specimen contained between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Co and between 0.01 and 0.1 pct Al, Fe, and Si. Other metallic elements present were in amounts less than 0.01 pct. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section measured the tensile strength, elongation, and Knoop hardness of both the Be-Cu Alloy 25 and the Be-Cu Alloy 125. These are given in Table I. The NBS Engineering Metallurgy Section also prepared photomicrographs of the two alloys; these are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The comparison of actual energy of comminution with theoretical surface energy presents a wide gap. On the other hand, Solid State Theory presents a viewpoint that places actual energy of breakage in understandable relationship with the theoretical strength of materials. Therefore the physical background of comminution theory favors Kick's Law. A11 discussions of comminution theory appear farfetched when comparison is made of the actual energy of crushing with the energy input called for by thermodynamic theory. Quoting Taggart:' "The work required to crush halite was of the general order of 0.10 kg cm per sq cm of new surface produced (based on air percolation) whereas the theoretical energy of this new surface, based on thermodynamic calculation by a number of investigators is 1 x 10'4 kg cm per sq cm or the work expended was 1000 times the new surface energy — an indicated crushing efficiency of 0.10 pct." It is frustrating to probe into comminution theory with the prospect that the energy one is measuring is 99.9 pct waste energy. Do the laws of comminution deal with energy consumed by mineral breakage or with waste heat energy? There seems to be something wrong. Solid State Theory may provide the answer. The following statement is particularly apt to the situation: "The fundamental fact about metals and indeed all materials, is that they are much weaker than they should be. By this, we mean that if the stress required to cause a given plane of atoms to slip past a neighboring plane is calculated from basic atomic and Solid State Theory, the resulting number is some 1000 times too large to be accounted for by errors in approximations or assumptions. We know now that this is due to dislocations, and we even have a fair understanding of the details of the process by which dislocations make a crystal weak. An intriguing possibility which suggests itself, results from the discovery of very minute metallic crystals which are apparently free of dislocations and which have a strength approaching the ideal value for a perfect crystal." Here we have an extraordinary reversal of the situation. The actual energy for breakage is only one-thousandth the theoretical instead of 1000 times as given by Taggart. But the theoretical energy presented by Solid State Theory is the binding energy between atoms (or ions) in a crystal lattice. This is the kind of energy envisaged by Kick's law. The surface energy or the other hand corresponds to Rittinger's law. Comparison of theoretical with actual, on the basis of surface or on the basis of Rittinger's law, seems to present an absurdity; yet Rittinger's law is confirmed by an impressive array of experimental evidence. Comparison of theoretical and actual on the basis of Solid State Theory or, in other words, on the basis of Kick's law seems reasonable; yet there is not a scrap of evidence to verify Kick's law. The situation appears paradoxical, but the developments in the next section of this paper show that the paradox is a hint to a strange turn of events. ENERGY-WEIGHT FRACTION FUNCTION charles3 has presented a final equation showing the relation of energy consumed in comminution to size of product n{-1) a-n + 1 E is energy, C is proportionality constant, a and n are constants and k is the coarsest size in the ground product (size modulus). In the course of study of a large amount of experimental evidence, Charles discovered that in the general case, a-n + 1 approximated zero. For some reason, a and n differed only by unity. But if a—n + 1 = 0 within experimental error, then it is obvious that Eq. 1 states that it requires an infinite amount of energy to grind any sample to any size. This is a case where nature gives an absurd answer to a man-made mathematical equation, hence something is wrong with the equation. An adjustment must be made to fit the equation with experience. NUMEROUS investigators have observed that internal friction accompanies cold-working of metals and the effect of annealing is to reduce this internal friction.1,2 However, - most of the experiments were made at high stress amplitudes and the principal purpose was to study the increase of internal friction as a result of the applied cyclic stress during measurement. In order to study the internal friction introduced by cold-working applied prior to the measurement, the stress level applied during the measurement of internal friction must be sufficiently small. The results of measurement are significant and can be used for a base of comparison only when the applied cyclic stress is so small that the internal friction is independent of stress amplitude. Internal friction of cold-worked metals under small stress level has been studied by a number of workers8 -" he internal friction was measured around room temperature with a frequency of vibration of the order of kilocycles per second. The purpose of this paper is to report a study of the change of internal friction when severely cold-worked aluminum was annealed at successively higher temperatures until it was completely recrys-tallized. The measurements of internal friction were made over a range of temperature extending from room temperature up to the temperature of prior anneal. The frequency of vibrations used was about one cycle per second. The apparatus used for the internal friction measurements to be reported in this paper was a torsion pendulum with the specimen in wire form as the suspension fiber. The description of this apparatus and the method of measurement have been previously given.7,8 The applied stress was sufficiently small SO that the magnitude of internal friction is independent of stress level at each temperature range concerned. Corresponding to this stress the maximum shearing strain on the surface of the specimen is of the order of l0-5 and lower. The in- ternal friction (Q-1) is reported as 1/p times the logarithmic decrement. Internal Friction Versus Temperature of Anneal: Fig. 1 shows the internal friction measurements performed upon 99.991 pct aluminum subjected to 95 pct reduction in area. The final diameter of the wire is 0.033 in. This figure gives a general survey of the effect of temperature of anneal and of temperature of measurement. The internal friction of the cold-worked specimen was first measured at room temperature. It was then annealed at 50°C for one hour and the internal friction measured at 50°C and at room temperature. The same wire was successively annealed at higher temperatures for one hour and measurements were taken at the annealing temperatures and lower temperatures as before. Such a procedure was followed in order to stabilize the internal friction at the temperature of measurement so that during the measurement which generally takes about half a minute, there is no detectable change in internal friction. This series of measurements .was made up to 450°C. After each annealing a short test piece of the specimen, which had received the same past thermal and mechanical treatments, was taken out for metallographic examination. It is seen from fig. 1 that up to the annealing temperature of 250°C we have the following observations: for any given temperature of measurement, the internal friction is lower the higher the temperature of prior anneal. When the annealing temperature is 290°C or higher, the internal friction at the annealing temperature drops abruptly to a value which is much smaller than that for the previous curve. Metallographic examinations showed that the recrystallization of the specimen was completed after the annealing at 290°C. Fig. 1 shows that, as far as internal friction is concerned, there is no abrupt transition between the processes of recovery and recrystallization. Averbach has also reached the conclusion that recovery may be a process analogous to recrystallization on the basis of X ray extinction measurements in brass." The effect of annealing temperature upon the internal friction at room temperature is shown by curve I of fig. 2. In this figure the internal friction at room temperature was plotted as a function of annealing temperature. It is seen that the internal friction decreases rapidly at first with an increase

Several methods of removing fatty acid coatings from iron ore flotation concentrates were tested both on a Mesabi oxidized iron ore and on a magnetic taconite concentrate, and their effects on the duplex flotation process and on pelletizing were compared. Either acid or alkali alone could not remove the coatings, but a combination of such reagents as lime and quebracho, calcium chloride and pyrophosphate, or sulfuric acid and an organic acid (oxalic, malonic, or citric acid) was quite effective. The use of activated carbon was found to be particularly promising. The removal of fatty acid coatings from iron ores is of much practical interest when a pelletizing process is being considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid collector or when a duplex flotation process is being considered for upgrading an oxidized iron ore. A duplex flotation process is a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process is being used in the Florida phosphate fields.' Although in northern Michigan mills fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully, at other locations fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates have proved so undesirable in the agglomeration operation that other methods of concentration had to be sought.' Since fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates, a combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho,3 lime and alkali phosphate,4 or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid,' has been proposed. It was also thought that activated carbon might be effective in removing fatty acid coatings due to its high adsorptive capacity. Activated carbon, with its enormous surface per unit of volume, is well known for its exceptional efficiency in removing organic pollutants from industrial effluents. This article presents the practical aspects of the above methods when they are applied to the duplex flotation process and to the pelletizing of iron flotation concentrates. The article also includes a preliminary investigation of the common parameters involved in the depressant activity of the reagents. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Initially, the experimental work was directed towards the optimization of each method for the removal of hydrophobic coatings from iron oxide surfaces floated with fatty acids. Subsequently, the methods thus optimized were tested in the duplex flotation process with an oxidized iron ore and in the pelletizing process with a magnetic taconite concentrate. Preliminary Flotation Tests: Although the three types of chemical treatment reported in the literature were briefly investigated for the purpose of comparison, major emphasis was placed during the preliminary flotation tests on the use of activated carbon because it was thought to have certain advantages over the chemical methods. LIME AND QUEBRACHO - To obtain a flotation concentrate for optimizing the lime and quebracho method of fatty acid removal, the magnetic taconite concentrate was used. The concentrate had a size consist of 90% passing 325 mesh and analyzed 64.5% iron. After a few preliminary tests the fatty acid flotation procedure with the magnetic taconite concentrate was standardized as follows. A 1200-g sample of the magnetic concentrate was pulped in a Fagergren laboratoy flotation cell to 40% solids, conditioned with 0.5 lb of soda ash per ton for 2 min, and then further conditioned with 1.0 lb of Acintol FA-2 per ton for 2 min. After 5 min of flotation, recovery was nearly complete, averaging 98.6% of the weight and 98.7% of the iron. The cell product, which amounted to 1.4% by weight and analyzed 63.2% iron, consisted mainly of relatively coarse middling particles. Since the repro-ducibility of the flotation concentrates produced by this procedure was vey high, the same procedure was used to prepare fatty acid concentrates for each of the six tests of the lime and quebracho method. Continuous cyclic unloading during tensile work hardening of polycrystalline zinc at room temperature enables specimens to sustain greatly increased extension. Such enhanced ductility is associated with creep-type extension, during which the cyclic component appears to promote relaxation of internal strains. It is possible to trace the transitions from tension, through enhanced cyclic extension, to fatigue and relate the observed behavior to simpler types of deformation. DISTINCTIVE deformation behavior has been shown to occur when loading includes both cyclic and unidirectional components. For aluminum and copper extended by a sequence of progressively biased strain reversals, coffin1 observed greater fracture ductility and lower flow stresses than during monotonic tension. This may be compared with the reduction in hardness obtained from conventional fatigue softening. But fatigue softening is accompanied by enhanced fatigue life,' whereas Benham3 found that fatigue life was reduced when copper continuously extended during axial load cycling. The corresponding specimen elongation, for large cyclic load amplitudes, was greater than during normal tension. Under different conditions, Bendler and wood4 found that torsional fatigue initiated extension in copper under low tensile loads previously in equilibrium with the specimen; fatigue life was again reduced. Thus there is a type of cyclic softening which is associated with reduced fatigue life and which occurs when the cyclic loading is accompanied by a unidirectional strain component. Further, the fracture ductility or extension obtained from the unidirectional component can exceed that obtained in the absence of cyclic load. Specimen extension was not initiated by axial fatigue at small load amplitudes;3 hence Benham's work distinguishes between fatigue at large and small amplitudes, the former often being linked with unidirectional deformation because of similarities in strain Structure. The initiation of tensile extension during torsional fatigue,4 however, occurred with small amplitudes. Comparable changes in behavior have been ob- served during creep. kennedy' found that combined cyclic and creep stresses on lead at 32°C increased the rate of elongation over that for simple creep, the consequence being a reduction in creep life. It was also demonstrated that small cyclic stresses applied after creep deformation initially increased recovery, but that prolonged application produced only normal fatigue hardening. It is clear that physical properties can be changed by interaction between the cyclic and unidirectional deformations, but owing to the number of different ways in which the deformations can be combined and the large number of possible variables for each combination, trends of behavior become easily obscured. One definite conclusion is that enhanced ductility or increased extension can be obtained by cyclic action, and it is this process that has been investigated for the tensile test by measurements of the extra tensile strain produced by the addition of a cyclic tensile component. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. Specimens were 99.99 pct Zn wire of 1.6 and 2.0 mm diam. Mean grain diameter was 0.02 mm, sufficiently small to give a ductile necked-down fracture under all loading conditions. All experiments were conducted at an average temperature of 20°C. Normal Tension. Unidirectional tensile curves at different strain rates were obtained from an In-stron testing machine, on which load-time curves were recorded autographically, using gage lengths of 5 and 10 cm. Straining was at constant cross-head velocity, and quoted strain rates are with reference to initial specimen length. Measurements of total elongation under simple tension were also made on the tensile machine that had been modified to incorporate an added fluctuating load. Combined Tension and Rapid Cyclic Load. An electromagnetic vibrator was coupled to the elastic beam of a Hounsfield ensometer- and driven sinus-oidally from a power amplifier at frequencies from 20 to 360 cps, the flexible connecting links on the tensometer being replaced by rigid fixtures to eliminate lateral vibration in the specimen. One end of the specimen was pulled by the normal extension drive of the tensometer while the other end, fixed to the elastic beam and vibrator, was subjected to rapid oscillations of load. It was thus possible to apply cyclic load to a tensile test without altering the rate of extension of the specimen

Reported herein are the results of a careful and detailed study of the non-ideal behavior of pure gases and their mixtures. Included are: (1) new data on five ternary systems composed of methane, ethane and H2 S; (2) a simple compressibility factor correlation that is inherently superior to present correlations, particularly for gases containing H2S and CO2; and(3) a detailed study of combination rules and the effect of system composition on the choice thereof. This study makes use of the rather large mass of data already available in the literature. A complete re-examination of the data and ideas presented in the last 25 years was considered desirable as a prelude to our basic concern — the effect of diluents on gas behavior. A consideration of both the macroscopic and microscopic properties of gases provides a better insight which, in turn, gives a firmer basis for improved correlation techniques. Such a study has shown that expressing the compressibility factor Z as a function of acentric factor w, as well as reduced temperature and pressure, yields a correlation that is broader in scope. The study of various combination rules has shown that better results are obtained by "tailoring" the rule used to the system composition. To do so improves the basic reality of results by overcoming some of the anomalies often found when using Kay's rule alone. Tentative recommendations are made regarding the most reliable combination rule for use with a given class of gas. The data presented are useful for estimating the direction and magnitude of the expected deviation when using a given rule. Although more work is needed, particularly around the critical region and with CO2 mixtures, the advantage of the classification scheme proposed is apparent. INTRODUCTION When one attempts to write a PVT equation to fit the data for actual gases, greater precision is obtained by the use of a multiple number of empirical constants. This has lead to multiple-constant equations such as Benedict-Webb-Rubin, Beattie-Bridgman, Keyes, etc., which are capable of yielding very precise results for pure gases in a range for which data to get the constants are available. As a matter of practicality, though, the use of such equations for gas mixtures is limited. Because of the infinite number of gas analyses available, any attempt to compile the constants needed requires a prohibitive amount of experimental data. This could be overcome by the use of a combination rule, but there is no real advantage in doing so because the end result offers no practical impovement over the Z factor correlation. The most widely used method of predicting the volumetric properties of pure gases is based upon the "theorem of corresponding states". According to this theorem, "all pure substances have corresponding molal volume at corresponding temperature and pressure if the reference point of correspondence is the critical point". Generalized compressibility charts for gases were prepared first by Cope and associates1 in 1931 and later by Brown and co-workers2 in 1932. However, the most commonly used charts are those of Dodge,3 Nelson and Obert,4 Hougen and atsson: and Standing and Katz.6 The work of Katz and co-workers has provided us with basic data for the hydrocarbons most widely used today. Their original chart6 was compared with a relatively large amount of multi-component data for gases consisting almost entirely of normal paraffin hydrocarbons. A deviation of only + 1.2 per cent was obtained.39 In the 20 years following publication of this work it has been found that the behavior of most mixtures of paraffin hydrocarbons could be predicted by this correlation within at least 5 per cent. Where difficulty has been encountered it has largely involved one or more of the following circumstances: pressures above 4,000 psig, mixtures containing large amounts of heavy ends and/or aromatics, systems in the critical region and mixtures containing polar compounds and/or CO2. This paper concerns the rupture or breakdown of rock formations as related to drilling, completing, and stimulating production of wells, and comprises data compiled from a study of literature and records of treatment of oil and gas wells. and from tests conducted in bores drilled into rock cores and outcrops of rock. Results of the investigation indicate that the internal pressure to rupture cylinders of rock and to breakdown rock formations surrounding a bore in the earth is dependent upon the extent of intrusion of fluids. the position of bedding planes. the ratio of internal to external diameter, the tensile strength of rock, and magnitude of confining pressure, and is independent of the size of bore, degree of fluid saturation. and temperature of rock within practical limits. It is concluded that the mathematical relationship of pressure in bores and stresses in the surrounding rock must not be limited by the simplifying assumptions of homogeneity. isotropy, and impermeability; that the incidence of lost circulation of drilling fluids to induced fractures may be reduced by preventing intrusion of fluids into the small intrinsic fractures along weak bedding planes; and that the magnitude of the breakdown pressure of wells to be treated may be lowered by removal of mud cake. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the results of tests which may serve to broaden the understanding of the phenomena of rupture or breakdown of rock and thus contribute to the improvement of the techniques for drilling and completing wells. including such operations as preventing lost circulation, stimulating production, and placing cement. Since the early recognition of the possibility of rupturing rock adjacent to a well by fluid pressure, the distribution and magnitude of stresses around a well and the internal pressure to cause failure have been expressed mathematically by application of the principles defining the elastic and inelastic behavior of thick-walled cylinders of a homogeneous. isotropic, impermeable material. In either the elastic or plastic state, if the conditions of homogeneity. isotropy, and impermeability were the normal characteristics of rock. there would be no reason to question the validity of the above principles when applied to rock. However. since most rock formations are characteristically permeable to some degree, contain bedding planes and small intrinsic fractures. and are heterogeneous, rendering invalid the assumptions of homogeneity, isotropy, and impermeability, the application of the thick-walled cylinder theories to the behavior of rock formations penetrated by a bore appears illogical. Also the failure to consider the effect of the properties of the drilling fluids, which certainly intrude in various degrees into most rock formations. is further cause for questioning the application of these principles. Even in the case of cylinders of hardened chrome-nickel steel, which would he considered relatively homogeneous isotropic. and impermeable, as compared to rock, it has been observed that the internal pressure capable of being withstood by the cylinders varied with the sizes of molecules comprising the rupturing fluid used. Because of these apparent weaknesses in the theories of the behavior of thick-walled cylinders when applied to bores in rock, and the importance of knowing the true behavior of rock under the influence of fluid pressure when planning drilling and completing procedures for wells, tests were undertaken to determine by observation the actual rupturing pressure of cylinders of rock and the effects of such variables as environmental conditions and characteristics of rock formations, fluid properties, and bore dimensions. It was intended that by these tests the validity of the thick-walled cylinder theories when applied to rock would be determined and, if found invalid, mathematical expressions would be derived for predicting stress and rupturing pressure of rock formations under various conditions. Since the derivation of mathematical expressions has been only partially completed, all of the results of the latter phase are not included in this paper. When the nucleation of silicon on a sapphire substrate is accomplished by gradually decreasing the substrate temperature while subjecting it to a constant impingement rate of hydrogen and silicon tetrachloride, the resulting deposit is characterized by widely separated islands of silicon scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. Analysis shows that nucleation takes place mainly on sites of large adsorption energy, about 85 kcal per mole, and small surface concentration, about 108 cm-2. Crystal growth proceeds rapidly on these nuclei and results in enough depletion of Sicl4 from the ambient gas to suppress further nucleation. The technological importance of single-crystal films on dielectric substrates has prompted considerable work on the deposition of silicon on sapphire. This paper is concerned with the deposition of silicon, by the reduction of silicon tetrachloride with hydrogen, onto heated sapphire substrates. The apparatus consisted of a temperature-controlled container for the silicon tetrachloride along with gas lines and flow meters necessary to convey a hydrogen-silicon tetrachloride mixture to a reaction chamber constructed of quartz tubing. Heat for the substrate was provided by means of an inductively heated graphite susceptor. The observations pertinent to the present discussion were made with an American Optical Co. high-temperature microscope which allowed us to make motion pictures of the deposition process at a magnification of approximately 50 times. Two main categories of experiments were carried out: one on determination of critical condensation temperatures and the other on the deposition of epitaxial silicon films on the sapphire substrates. Critical condensation temperatures were determined in the traditional way by raising the substrate temperature well above that at which condensation could be expected at the impingement rates being studied and then gradually lowering the temperature until the condensation of the first silicon was observed. This was done initially with ellipsometry-type detection but it was soon discovered that the deposits were occurring as widely separated islands and groups of islands scattered over an "open sea" of sapphire. We have called these archipelago formations. They were most easily detected by optical microscopy. Data gathered from experiments of this type have been collected in Table I. Motion pictures of the formation of archipelago patterns show that the nucleation period lasts about 10 sec if the substrate temperature and impingement rate are kept constant. Essentially all of the nuclei are formed in a few seconds and all subsequent silicon deposition merely adds to the size of the established nuclei. After an archipelago formation has matured at a given substrate temperature and impingement rate, it is very difficult to stimulate any further nucleation in the open space between islands. Lowering the substrate temperature will occasionally stimulate nucleation but increasing the impingement rate hardly ever produces any more new nuclei. It should also be emphasized that the nucleation rates appear to be very small, about 104 cm-2 sec-1. They will receive special attention in the analysis section. Another series of experiments was performed employing a systematic variation of substrate temperatures and impingement rates approximating those expected to produce epitaxy. Sapphire substrates with surfaces normal to the 2233 direction were used. In contrast to the procedure that produces archipelago patterns, these films were deposited by raising the substrate temperature to a desired value at which time the silicon tetrachloride and hydrogen flow was begun. Of course, these depositions produced mainly films that were continuous. After removal from the deposition chamber, the substrate and silicon film were examined microscopically to determine the nature of the deposit and by X-ray diffraction to determine the extent to which a single-crystal film had been achieved. Results of these experiments are summarized in Table 11. Of interest for the present analysis is the fact that epitaxy appears to be confined to a fairly narrow temperature range between about 1050" and 1150°C. This also will be discussed in the analysis section. ANALYSIS In this section we shall apply nucleation theory to the data presented above with the objective of testing

Numerical calculations were made to determine the behavior of reservoirs with high-pressure drawdown and wide well spacing where the initial productivity is low and the wells are completed by hydraulic fracturing. The two-phase flow equations were solved for the flow into a single well. This well was assumed to be producing from a reservoir with hydraulically created horizontal fractures (four different systems with fractures were studied). For comparison purposes, additional two-phase flow calculations were made assuming a reservoir with uniform rock properties. The two-phase flow results were also compared with the conventional calculation methods, which do not include the effect of saturation gradients resulting from a simultaneous flow of oil and gas which are normal to this type reservoir. It was found that the conventional methods predict (1) a high and too optimistic value of ultimate recovery, (2) a high producing rate and a high reservoir pressure at a given oil recovery and (3) a low trend of gas-oil ratio with oil recovery. Included in the two-phase flow calculations were provisions to control the oil production rate by an allowable rate and, also, by a gas-oil ratio penalty rule. For the systems with hydraulic fractures, the producing rate was controlled by the gas-oil ratio penalty rule for most of the life. This is in contrast to the system with uniform rock properties which went "on decline" almost immediately. An unexpected characteristic of the systems which included fractures was the early rise in producing gas-oil ratio from 730 cu ft/bbl to approximately 1,200 cu ft/bbl, followed by a "leveling off" before the normally expected gas-oil ratio rise began. Additional features which are a result of hydraulic fracturing are (I) greater ultimate recovery, (2) higher average producing rates and (3) a lower average reservoir pressure at a given oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Some oil fields discovered during the past few years are producing from certain volumetric ally controlled reservoirs (often referred to as solution or internal gas- drive reservoirs) which are characterized by high-pressure drawdown at the wells. Since the available pressure drawdown at a well is limited by the static reservoir pressure and the producing rate is controlled by the available drawdown, wells completed in this type of reservoir usually produce at a rate less than the allowable from the time of completion. Because of this, this type of reservoir is referred to as a low productivity reservoir. Economic considerations require the use of wide well spacing and well stimulation by hydraulic fracturing to make commercial wells in this type of reservoir. Performance predictions for volumetrically controlled reservoirs have been made using a combination of two standard equations. 1. The "Schilthuis" or "Muskat" type material balance equation is used to relate the average reservoir pressure and the cumulative oil recovery. 2. The results from the material balance equation and the productivity factor as described by Pirson' are used to relate the cumulative recovery with producing rate and time. The material balance equation assumed uniform pressure and liquid saturation conditions throughout a reservoir. The steady-state radial flow formula allows for a pressure gradient toward a well but assumes uniform liquid saturation. These calculation methods are adequate for application to reservoirs wherein the drawdown at the well to realize satisfactory producing rates is small compared to the total pressure. In low productivity, volumetrically controlled reservoirs, the pressure drawdown at the well is large cornpared to the total pressure. Although a precise number cannot be given for the magnitude of a large pressure drawdown, values in excess of 1,000 psi would definitely be included. For practical considerations, this usually occurs when the formation flow capacity is less than about 100 md-ft. However, this limit of formation flow capacity will vary with the well producing rate. The low pressure in the neighborhood of the well which results from a high drawdown causes evolution of large volumes of gas. This causes the gas saturation to be higher near the well than at a greater distance—-hence, a non-uniform gas saturation. Also, the relationship between the relative permeability to oil (K/K) and gas saturation is nonlinear but decreases approximately in an exponential way with increases in gas saturation. Because of this, the following chain reaction is established.

Calculations are presented for the design of a silicon photodiode in which the incident light beam makes multiple passes between the detector surfaces. Total internal reflection is used for this "light-trapping" effect. By this means, the optical path length can be extended to several millimeters, while the electrode separation remains less than 102 cm, as required for nanosecond response time. Data are presented for a Schottky barrier photodiode constructed on a multiply reflecting silicon base wafer. It is shown that the long-wavelength response is considerably extended in such structures without a corresponding sacrifice in high-speed response. The development of efficient and powerful lasers at 1.06 p has stimulated interest in detectors which operate at this wavelength. In typical silicon photodiodes, for detecting 1.06 p radiation, the requirements for high speed and high sensitivity are mutually exclusive. Since the absorption coefficient is only 25 cm-', a lo-'-cm path length is required to absorb 92 pct of the incident 1.06 p radiation. If the electrode separation is greater than 10 cm, however, the carrier transit time will be greater than 1 nsec. This problem can be solved by allowing the incident light beam to make multiple passes between the electrodes. The optical path length can then be extended to several millimeters, as required for complete absorption, while the electrode separation remains less than 10' cm, as required for nanosecond response time. In a typical photodiode geometry, one ohmic contact and one rectifying contact are formed on the two opposite surfaces of a base wafer, and the wafer thickness determines the electrode separation. The objective of the multiple reflection design is to allow all 1.06 p radiation to enter the detector front surface and to form the back detector surface so that no 1.06 radiation can exit. Total internal reflection at the back detector surface is well-suited for light trapping of 1.06 p radiation because the relatively large dielectric constant of silicon leads to a critical angle of 16.5 deg for total internal reflection. LIGHT TRAPPING It is well-known that, as light passes from one medium such as air into another medium such as glass or silicon, the angle of refraction is always less than the angle of incidence. In the limiting case, where the incident rays approach an angle of 90 deg with the normal, the refracted rays approach a fixed angle +, beyond which no refraction is possible: this is called the critical angle. It follows from Snell's law that where = critical angle, n - index of refraction of air, n' - index of refraction of the medium. Applying the principle of reversibility of light rays, all internal angles of incidence greater than +, will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". The index of refraction of silicon at 1.06 p is 3.5,' and the critical angle is thus 16.5 deg. Fig. 1 shows these relationships for silicon. This very small critical angle in silicon is significant because all incident angles between 16.5 and 90 deg will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". This effect can be implemented with a "prismlike" geometry, so that incident light can be introduced into the sample without loss and "trapped". PHOTOSIGNALS A precise knowledge of the absorption coefficient at 1.06 in silicon is of critical importance to the design of fast and efficient silicon photodiodes for 1.06 radiation. Dash and newman2 show a value of 25 cm-l, and our measurements have corroborated this value. Assuming that the collection of photoinduced minority carriers is perfect, the quantum efficiency of a photodiode is dependent only on the absorption coefficient. It then follows from Lambert's law that where QE is the quantum efficiency in pct, a is the absorption coefficient, d is the optical path length, and the reflectivity at the surface is assumed to be completely suppressed by an optical interference layer. Fig. 2 gives the maximum quantum efficiency for 1.06p radiation of a silicon photodiode with optical path length d, using Eq. [2]. The ultimate response time of a fully depleted photodiode to an incident light pulse can be considered to be the arrival times of all photoinduced carriers at the contacts, i.e., the minority carriers at the junction interface and the majority carriers at the oppo-

THE minerals that collectively are known as chromite form an isomorphous series of the general formula (Mg,Fe) 0. (Cr,Al,Fe) 203. So wide is the range in chemical composition in this group that chrome ore consisting entirely of the mineral chromite may range from less than 30 pct to more than 60 pct Cr203. The most comprehensive published data on the chemical com- position of chromite are by Stevens,62 who made complete analyses of 52 samples of chromite concentrate from many localities in North, Cen- [ ] tral, and South America. These samples were mechanically purified to remove associated silicates and might be regarded as the cleanest chromite that could be obtained by any mechanical milling process. Fig 1 shows the predominant zone of isomorphism, within the triangular prism of composition defined by the mineralogical end members of the series, wherein his analyzed samples fell.

The accompanying sketch shows the interesting position of Salt Lake City with reference to Western mining areas and justifies its title "The Center of Western Mining." In the last twenty years, the area embraced within a circle of 600 miles radius with Salt Lake City as its center has produced 79.87% of the gold, 91.9% of the Silver, 77.47% of the copper, 53.61% of the lead and 26.55% of the zinc produced in the United States, including Alaska. This area also contains the greatest coal deposits of the continent, some of the greatest oil deposits, great iron deposits and many other important mineral resources. The 600-mile circle contained 69% of the active operators of other than coal mines and 40% of the men employed in mines other than coal mines of the United States, including Alaska, for the four-year period ended with 1923.

With plant start-up slated for early 1966, Palabora Mining Co. will take its place among the large copper mining properties of the World. Located near the town of Phalaborwa in the Lowveld area of Transvaal Province, approximately 250 air miles northeast of Johannesburg, Palabora is the result of a cooperative project between Rio Tinto-Zinc Corp. and Newmont Mining Co. Other large shareholders are American Metal Climax, Inc., Union Corp. Ltd., and Selection Trust Ltd. Earliest known mining activity in the area is thought to date back about 400 years, when the Bantu tribes were migrating southward from the great lakes of Central Africa. Old workings and hand tools have been found in numerous places on the flanks of Loolekop, the hill that contains the outcrop of the Palabora orebody. Nearby ruins of small furnaces give added evidence of the knowledge of copper smelting possessed by these natives.

THE sudden realization that known sulphur reserves amenable to mining by the Frasch hot water process are nearing exhaustion focused attention on widely scattered surface deposits throughout the world. These deposits are not necessarily of lower sulphur content than ores located underneath Louisiana or Texas salt domes which usually aver- age about 30 pct sulphur disseminated in limestone matrix. Their near surface occurrence, however, renders exploitation by the Frasch process impossible. As is well known, the Frasch process depends on the presence of 500 to 1000 ft of overburden and cap rock above the sulphur deposits to permit melting underground sulphur in place by diffusing hot water under pressures of 200 to 600 psig in the formation and raising the molten sulphur to surface by air lift. This process renders possible the production of pure sulphur which is 99.5 pct pure without any subsequent treatment.

IN the course of a general investigation of boride systems, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, various vanadium boride powders of relatively good purity were prepared which could be used for a determination of the phases present. The X-ray pattern of one of these lots showed, in addition to the known VB1 and VB22 phases, an additional phase, almost certainly of composition V3B4, isomorphous with Cr3B4, Cb3B4, Ta3B4, and Mn3B,. Its pattern fitted in well with the indices worked out by Kiessling for Mr3B4.3 The unit cell for this new compound is orthorhombic, with the dimensions a = 3.030A, b = 13.18A, c = 2.986A7 V=119.2A.' Table I lists the X-ray diffraction data for V.3,.
