The present situation is complex. The producers are hard pressed by reason of the low price of crude, while the independent refiner is little better off, because of the corresponding cut in price of refined products, except on occasional contracts. If the real costs are analyzed, it will be seen that the land speculators and the lessors—royalty owners—make the larger profits and not the struggling legitimate operator or independent refiner. A new logging method, called induction logging, is described; it measures the conductivity, or resistivity, of the strata traversed by a bore hole. The apparatus, which is briefly described, comprises a coil system coupled with the ground by induction, so that there is no need for direct contact with the mud, or with the formations. For that reason, the method is particularly useful in oil base mud, and it was first applied to that case. A discussion concerning the respective contribution of each region of ground in the vicinity of the coil system is given. Through the concept of a geometrical factor, it is demonstrated that the total signal, which measures the apparent conductivity, is the summation of the partial products — geometrical factor by conductivity — for the different regions of the ground under consideration. It is thus possible to establish, for each type of coil arangement, investigation characteristic as well as departure curves and correction charts for beds of various thicknesses. This should greatly facilitate the quantative interpretation of the field logs, even in cases where such interpretation would have been difficult on electric logs taken with electrodes. It is also shown that focussing combinations of coils can be used, which give, directly on the recorded log, a value close to the true conductivity, even for fairly thin beds, thus eliminating in most cases the need for corrections. These focussing systems also give a sharper definition of the boundaries between successive strain.

INTRODUCTION Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is in process design, operation, and maintenance to produce an acceptable product that can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of emphasis upon these interests, attention to other potential values of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modern coal preparation plant. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches sandwiched together in layers that differ visually from each other in physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, 6 percentage points of dry volatile matter, and 10 percentage points of total su1fur.l Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content, and, undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter that might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long-established fact that coal is not homogeneous, as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance.

With the object of improving the melting, casting, and working of palladium and 95.5 pct Pd-4.5 pct Ru, the effects of different melting atmospheres (reducing, oxidizing, and neutral), crucible linings, and annealing atmospheres have been studied. Some interesting observations are included about the solubility and diffusion of gases in palladium. THE object of the present work was to ascertain the effect of oxidizing, inert, and reducing ambient atmospheres on the melting and casting of palladium and a Pd-Ru alloy commonly used for jewelry. The need for such a study was indicated during World War I1 when jewelers experienced difficulty in their attempts to make small castings of the torch-melted Pd-Ru alloy by the lost-wax process. When the metal was melted under oxidizing conditions similar to those used for platinum, the castings were gassy; on the other hand, if the melting atmosphere was reducing, the castings were hot-torn and brittle. General Experimental Procedure Pure palladium sponge (99.9 pct Pd) and pure ruthenium powder (99.8 pct Ru) were used for making small ingots (50 g) of palladium and 95.5 pct Pd-4.5 pct Ru by induction melting. The coil, 3 in. high by 2 in. ID with 16 turns, was energized by a 20 kva Ajax high frequency converter. The melting crucibles, so-called sand crucibles, which were made of a highly refractory fireclay, were lined with different materials, including proprietary magnesia, alundum, zircon, and zirconia

Briquetting is apparently a very simple operation, yet it has offered so many mechanical and chemical difficulties that it required almost a century to place it on a commercial basis. Since 1860, however, the progress has been steady and satisfactory, and to-day, for most of the European coal companies, the briquette-plant is a very profitable investment. Among the many applications of scientific knowledge to further economy by recovering and utilizing by-products and raw materials, there is possibly none which deserves the attention of Americans to a higher degree than briquetting. The recent miners' strike in Pennsylvania, which resulted in a scarce and irregular supply of coal at a high price, has advanced the possibilities for briquetting, and as a consequence public interest has grown rapidly. THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the alit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike's Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles1, this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent.

Flotation variables were investigated for the re-clamation of phosphate from a Florida washer slime. Under optimum conditions, 92% of the phosphate was recovered. Further cleaning of the rougher flotation concentrate resulted in a product containing about 30% P2O5 with a phosphate recovery of 65%. The enormous amount of slimes rejected in the Florida pebble phosphate fields, containing roughly one-third of the phosphate in the pebble matrix,1 has long been considered as a serious problem to the industry. The mere disposal of these slimes has posed an almost insurmountable task for several investigators.2-5 Some companies still resort to huge surface dams, some covering 1800 acres, for slime disposal.6 Information on the recovery of fine phosphate from these slimes is scanty. Dry separation8 and electrostatic beneficiation8 were suggested, but would necessitate radical changes in the present mining and concentration methods. Haseman10 proposed the selective flocculation of colloidal phosphate with starch, while Ralston11 suggested the removal of clay from the matrix by amine flotation. Leaching of the slimes for recovering the small amount of uranium was attempted by the Battelle Memorial Institute12,13 but proved to be economically unfeasible. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the optimum fatty-acid flotation conditions for reclaiming the phosphate discarded with the Bartow washer slime. Prior to the flotation experimerits, however, the size distribution and the minera-logical composition of the employed slime had to be determined.

A study of the correlation of the mechanical properties and of the microstructure with the heat treatment of 60-40 brass has been confined, heretofore, to the rolled or extruded material as received from the mannfacturer. The results obtained by Babson and Buhler,' Bengough and Hudson12 Stead and Stedman,3 and Brayton4 have been confined to the treatment of the material as received. No attempt was made to get the material into a given condition and then to work from this basis. To start with a given structure would have the decided advantage of making the work independent of the original condition, hence, to make the results reproduceable. In a previous paper, it was shown, in connection with the study of the transformation that occurs at about 470" C., that if specimens were quenched to produce the beta structure and then reheated, the beta would begin to break down, at approximately 200" C., into a very finely divided alpha. It was predicted that important results might be obtained if test pieces were to be given a similar double heat treatment and then tested for the mechanical properties as well as a study of the microstructure. The material used in the present investigation was a 3/4-in. round bar of extruded muntz metal of the following composition: Copper, 61.05 per cent.; zinc (by difference), 38.90 per cent.; lead, 0.05 per cent.; iron, trace; tin, nil.

As 1970 develops and industrial minerals stand at a crucial point in their progress, research and development programs appear to be the key needed to open up new uses for each mineral's future growth. Radically new processes are needed for making a host of new synthetic products from mineral raw materials which will more nearly meet the demanding specifications required for high performance in space, nuclear and defense applications. Consumer applications for high temperature environments will be needed and are important for continuing the nations economic mineral position. In addition, an acute materials problem limits the effectiveness of some of the newer concepts for controlling ail pollution. What is needed then, according to a report printed by the National Academy of Sciences, is the carefully planned development of a limited number of major centers at universities to provide for both basic research and training of personnel; the nurturing of interdisciplinary mechanisms for research and problem solving within these centers; the achieving of a better balance between physics and chemistry within research, emphasizing the chemical aspects of the material sciences; and the enhancement of a broader professional identity by unifying the various disciplines involved into a possible federation of existing societies which have an interest in the problems. The central power-station of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to arrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been made to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Company), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. IT. General Considerations. The climate is hot and dry. The region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all.

This study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metal-lographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. Material Used The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. Introduction This surprisingly little-known group of minerals, the nonmetallics, so-called for their lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom, and cinstitutes perhaps 75 percent of all mineral species. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of the common acids, oxides, hydroxides, and two elements, carbon and sulfur. The list of the non- metallic minerals, therefore, is very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulfates, and less commonly, arsenates, chromates, molybdates, suliides, tungstates, and vanadates, the latter groups, and many of the oxides, being sought principally for their metal content. Those nonmetallics used commercially are generally called the industrial minerals, although in addition this term also includes a considerable group of rocks. The list of industrial minerals and rocks is continually growing as new uses are found, and it now numbers over 300 commodities. The industrial minerals industry has developed since about 1920. There- fore, the development has been fast, and it has been more or less parallel with the development of the art of minerals beneficiation. General Discussion of the Group This group is so heterogeneous that it has defied logical, or widely accepted, classification, whether by origin, composition, or end use, and perhaps for this reason the industrial minerals generally have received short shrift in both teaching and research. Except for those involved with asbestos, cement, fertilizers, gypsum, salt, sand and gravel, few large companies have deigned to enter the field, and consequently most industrial minerals have been developed for the most part by the small operators or entrepreneurs. Yet surprisingly, except for one war year, the nonmetallics have always surpassed the metals in value and tonnage (Fig. 1). One main characteristic that most of the nonmetallics have in common is direct sensitivity to labor and transportation. In other words they are characterized by large bulk and low-unit value, and hence have what might be termed a "place value".

THE North Lily Mine started its career in an unusual way it was discovered by a geologist. The remarkable circumstance of driving a 2400-ft. drift into an unexplored country and "hitting her on the nose," indicates that geologists are sometimes numbered among those whom the Lord loves. Diamond- drilling from surface had previously shown the presence and position of the Ophir beds, and surface showings of pebble-dykes, faults, and bleached rhyolite indicated conditions similar to those at the Tintic Standard "Pot-hole." The discovery drift from the Tintic Stand- ard 700-level reached the North Lily orebody in January, 1926, and development and stoping were continued by Tintic Standard men and equipment until the North Lily shaft was sunk and put into service in May, 1928. The discovery drift was run on a cooperative basis by the Tintic Standard and North Lily mining com- panies. Finding the North Lily mine cost the North Lily company $26,000. The Tintic Standard Mining Co. furnished men and equipment to drive this discovery drift at a fraction of what it would have cost to find the orebody from surface. This was the beginning of the friendly cooperation that still exists. Through Tintic Standard ground the Tintic Standard paid two- thirds of the cost and the North Lily one-third; the cost of the drift through Eureka Lily, into North Lily ground, was paid by North Lily. Later, another drift from the Tintic Standard 900-level was run on the same plan, excepting that Eureka Lily paid its share of the cost; that is, the Eureka Lily paid one-third of the expense in Tintic Standard ground, and the Eureka Lily two-thirds and North Lily one-third in Eureka Lily ground. This 900-drift was driven by North Lily from the Eureka Lily line to near the North Lily west side-line. From this point the Chief Consolidated continued the drift well into Tintic Bullion ground.

Edward Keller, Baltimore, Md. (communication to the Secretary): When, at the New Pork meeting, February, 1899, Mr. Douglas gave an abstract of his highly interesting paper on the Copper Queen mine, he invited the members of the Institute, in his usual progressive spirit, to make a full scientific investigation of the region of that mine during the prospective excursion to Bisbee, Arizona. I volunteered to examine some of the metallurgical processes and products of the works, and obtained from Mr. Douglas a valuable series of samples. Upon the issue of his paper, however, I found that he had already a considerable volume of analyses of those products, and that little was left for me to do in that respect, except to duplicate his results, the importance of which work would not have been commensurate to the time and labor involved. I selected, therefore, only some points which he had not made entirely clear, or concerning which I was skeptical. The details of most of my work will appear in a future paper. From Mr. Douglas's figures I have calculated the values for the elimination of impurities in the so-called Leghorn converter, introduced by him at the Copper Queen works, and have found them to be as follows: Percentage of Elimination of Impurities in Pour Blows of a Converter. ORDINARILY secondary copper, unless electrolytically refined, is reclaimed directly as foundry ingots used in the manufacture of copper-rich alloy castings. This use does not require the elimination of the impurities to the degree required if the recovered metal is to be used for electrical purposes where a high electrical conductivity is of prime importance. However, as a part of the general policy of reusing its own scrap and by-products wherever possible, the Western Electric Co. at its Hawthorne Works is recovering its secondary copper as wire bars which are delivered to its own rod and wire mill and there processed into wire of high electrical conductivity. This departure from the usual recovery scheme has been accomplished through the careful classification and sorting of the material entering the furnace charges and the careful control of the subsequent melting and refining in a reverberatory furnace. Tests conducted over a period of approximately four years have shown that the quality of wire bars produced from selected secondary copper is equal to that of wire bars produced by the electrolytic refineries. The interest which has been exhibited in the process by those who have seen it has prompted the following general description. It is the authors' opinion that the recovery of secondary copper will become more and more an important factor in the copper production industry. The description is largely of the refining furnace and its operation, but it must be remembered that careful classification and sorting of the scrap materials to eliminate impurities are just as important as the furnace operation toward obtaining a satisfactory final product. Classification and sorting do not lend themselves easily to description; they must just be done. It should also be recognized at the outset that constant intelligent supervision is requisite to the success of the process because there are so many ways in which impurities can find their way into the final product.

I AM indebted to The Kaolin Co. of West Cornwall, Conn., and particularly to its engineer, Mr. M. Wanner, for permission to make public, through the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the interesting results of his experiments, having in view the winning of kaolin from deep deposits without shaft-sinking or removing of the overburden. So far as I am aware, nothing like it has been accomplished heretofore, although it reminds one of the methods successfully employed in Louisiana for the winning of sulphur from deep beds by the sinking of pipes one within another, injecting superheated steam under pressure through one pipe, the heat of the steam liquefying the sulphur and the pressure forcing it up through the other pipe to bins at the surface. The kaolin-deposit at Nest Cornwall is an alteration in situ-that is, it is not sedimentary. A series of clay-veins dipping about 500 from the vertical, lie between a foot-wall of limonite and a hanging-wall of gneiss and hornblende schist. The clay-veins alternate with veins or seams of more or less broken quartz, and unaltered feldspar. The deposit, which occurs at a point about 600 ft. above the Housatonic river, was opened five years ago, and about 5,000 tons of a superior grade of washed kaolin has been extracted from open pits and sold. It soon became evident that this node of extracting the product would prove unremunerative, by reason of the dip of the vein and the intercalary strata and lenses of -quartz, and a more satisfactory method of working the deposit was sought. It is well understood, that, in the preparation of all clays for market, especially residuary kaolin, the most important as well as the most difficult step is the washing of the crude product. This paper constitutes a preliminary report on experimental work done to date on the anode-furnace treatment of blister copper containing relatively high percentages of nickel. The investigation has not been completed but results obtained to date are considered of sufficient interest to warrant publication. Blister copper treated by the Ontario Refining Co. originates from the Copper Cliff smelter of The International Nickel Company of Canada, of which the former is a wholly-owned subsidiary. The blister as received contains from 0.50 to 1.50 per cent Ni, and in this respect differs from that treated by other refineries on this continent. During the anode-furnace treatment, only a portion of the nickel content is removed, and of the amount remaining in the anodes a varying percentage is found in the anode slimes. This necessitates a more extensive treatment than ordinary nickel-free material. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat roasting and leaching operations several times before the nickel content is low enough to permit the slimes to proceed to the dore furnace. This, besides increasing treatment charges, causes greater selenium stack losses and involves a longer tie-up of precious-metal values. Therefore this investigation was undertaken with the aim of determining the factors influencing the diversion of nickel into the anode sludge. From experience it was known that by keeping the nickel content of anodes at 0.55 to 0.60 per cent maximum a relatively satisfactory slime resulted. One avenue of attack therefork was developing improved elimination in the anode-furnace treatment so that the anode content mentioned above was not exceeded. Another angle was to improve the solubility, during electrolysis, of the nickel constituent in the anodes, thus decreasing the percentage diverted to slimes. It may be mentioned here that nickel dissolving electrochemically and entering the electolyte presents no difficulty from a treatment standpoint. Both of these approaches were studied and are discussed separately below.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp. is located approximately 900 km southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36 to 46 kt/d (50,7055tpd). The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02-0.4% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite. Pilot plant testing conducted during 1970 at Toquepala, Cuajone's sister plant, determined that the recovery of the molybdenite into a salable concentrate could be accomplished relatively easily by using the Asmol process. Experience gained at Toquepala, which converted to Asmol in 1969, confirmed the simplicity of process. Simplicity of operation was one of the major criteria for the process selection because, at the time, it was expected that the molybdenite plant would start up concurrently with the copper concentrator. Other processes studied either produced inferior results or were judged more difficult to operate. However, geological information indicated that the molybdenite content of the ore would be relatively low for the first couple of years of operation, so the design and construction of the plant was delayed until after the copper plant was in production. Asmol remained the process selection. During 1976 and 1977, the flowsheet and plant layout based on pilot plant data, new results obtained from Cuajone's metallurgical laboratory, and process improvements from Toquepala's experience were completed. One of the more important innovations from the Cuajone laboratory was that the Asmol consumption could be substantially reduced by replacing air with nitrogen gas in the rougher and first cleaner flotation steps
