SINCE devising the incline top-slicing method in use It the Coronado mine,1 I have had numerous inquiries is to how the same system could be adapted to larger orebodies. Based upon our experience here, 1 have outlined below some suggestions for its, application to orebodies of larger size. Modifications and extensions, of course, would have to be made to take care of different dimensions and irregularities. In order that one may have a better understanding of the scheme, a brief description of the Coronado method will he given first.

THE Institute Committee on Industrial Relations, of which Robert Linton is chairman, held a meeting on Feb. 21, listed as one of the technical sessions of the annual meeting, at which reports of the sub-committees were presented. Following are abstracts of these reports. The Institute can furnish mimeo-graphed copies of the complete reports on Safety, Employment, Illness, Mental Factors, and Cripples in Industry. Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. The examples given are the Beat-son, Birmingham district, Mineville district, and Cornucopia.

SEVERAL years ago the frequent breaking of wheels on the 66-cu. ft. cars used with the underground electric haulage suggested that the numerous frogs in the track might be a contributing cause toward this breakage. As a remedy a spring frog was thought of, but the 30-lb. rails used were too small for such a de-vice to be made, that would stand the work. Through a unique Department of Commerce program a group of US mining equipment manufacturers spent 18 fruitful days in the, Far East, meeting with government and industry leaders in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philip¬pines. The US Mining and Exploration Equipment Semi¬nar Mission, held April 3-20, 1979, was sponsored by the Special Activities Group of the Commerce Department's Office of International Marketing. The program included a series of technical overview papers presented by the manufacturers, aimed at promoting the sale of US products and services throughout the world.

Mercury is the latest ecological disaster. It was believed to be no pollution problem because it is heavier than water and expected to fall to the bottom of streams. But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that mercury in a dozen states and several Canadian provinces was being ingested by fish. A Deadly Dose First to sound the alarm was Canada when a graduate student's research revealed that mercury contamination in Lake St. Clair had reached 1.4 pmm. which is almost three times the 0.5 ppm the FDA's allowable maximum.

Higher education is in serious trouble in the United States. With increasing costs threatening to create a taxpayer's revolt, serious thought must be given to determining whether or not we can continue to afford our present educational policies. Disinterested students with little aptitude are pushed into over- crowded universities by well-meaning parents, but they lack real objectives beyond achieving that great status symbol-the degree. Advanced degrees are heaped upon the baccalaureate degree, and the pursuit of the pure and social sciences continues at the expense of engineering and technology.

D. R. Lyons (Republic Steel Corp., Cleveland)— Some tests using wet tables conducted by an operating company to determine the effect of table-water density on the quality of the washed coal should be of interest. The only variable during the testing period was the percentage of solids in the table water. Table operating data are shown in Table XV. The ash content of the washed coal remained constant or nearly so, as the percentage of solids varied while the sulphur content of the washed coal decreased as the percentage of solids increased.

Much has been written in the past about the non- cataracting ball mill as typified by the installations of the Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill and the three units of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. in its Humboldt and Republic mills. Because no direct comparisons are available from the Cleveland-Cliffs plants and because the published data of Tennessee Copper Co.'s London mill covered a period of development over several years, it has been difficult for engineers to grasp the full significance of the non-cataracting economics.

THE original trucks at Castle Dome were 30-ton Knuckeys with 150 hp, H-series Cummins engines and 15-ton Euclids with the same engines. The Euclids were used early in the operation, working with 2 1/2-yd Diesel shovels on stripping and later in opening new benches where the lack of room favored the smaller trucks because of their shorter turning radius. They have also been used on road building and similar jobs. On regular production, where the 30-ton trucks can be used, they are not economical.
