Many present direct reduction processes utilize iron ore concentrates for the production of sponge iron and the sponge iron is usually preferred as an agglomerate. Pelletizing a high grade iron oxide concentrate prior to reduction is a simple approach to the high capacity production of a uniform and agglomerated sponge iron product. The present paper describes the effect of different atmospheres and physical characteristics on the reduction of pelletized iron oxide concentrates. The kinetics of iron oxide reduction have been I studied by numerous investigators1-4 and a rate equation for the hydrogen reduction of hematite and magnetite has been proposed. Mc Kewan' obtained kinetic data for the reduction of hematite spheres sintered at 13'70°C (2498'F'). The kinetics of magnetite reduction was studied by Quets. He compacted the oxide at a pressure of 1 ton per sq cm and sintered the specimens to densities of 95 to 96 pct of theoretical. These studies demonstrated that the reduction of iron oxide is a topochemical process and that the rate of reduction is proportional to the receding surface area of remaining iron oxide. Thus, the measurement of the kinetics of iron oxide reduction depends upon the development of a measurable and well defined interface between metal and reacting oxide. It is evident that the reduction rate will be constant only when the rate of formation of the reaction product layer is constant. It was recognized by Joseph' and Edstrom' that the physical character of the oxide will determine the configuration of the interface between oxide and metal. The reduction of oxides which exhibit few pores or no interconnected pores should proceed by topochemical processes. However, if a massive or dense crystalline ore cracks during the reduction of the oxide, thus allowing the reduction to Proceed away from a well defined oxide/metal interface, then the observed reduction rate will vary or change during reduction. From a process standpoint, it would be difficult to apply absolute reduction rates determined for crystalline or nonporous iron oxide to the direct reduction of a porous pellet of iron ore concentrate. Most present direct reduction processes are attempts to utilize iron ore concentraates in the production of sponge iron. The sponge iron is usually preferred in an agglomerated form for subsequent melting practices. Pelletizing a high grade iron oxide concentrate prior to reduction is a simple approach to the high capacity production of a uniform and agglomerated sponge iron product. One process for preparing such a product has already been de-scribed. This paper describes the effect of different atmospheres and physical characteristics on the reduction of pelletized iron oxide concentrates. ORE CONCENTRATES STUDIED A magnetite concentrate from Reserve Mining Co. and a hematite concentrate from U.S. Steel Corp. were used in preparing pellets for these experiments. A head analysis of these concentrates is given in Table I. To compare the reduction rates of pelletized concentrates, it was necessary that each pellet contain equal amounts of oxygen which could be removed by reduction, regardless of the oxidation state, i.e., Fez% or Fe304. Also, because of the difficulty in preparing spherical pellets of uniform size, weight, density, and porosity for experimental purposes, pellets of a cylindrical shape were formed in a press.

Vapor-liquid phase equilibrium experiments have been conducted in a static equilibrium cell on mixtures of a light, 45 API stock- tank gravity reservoir fluid and a rich hydrocarbon gas containing approximately 55 mole per cent of intermediate hydrocarbons. Both apressure-vs-composition study of the gas and a simulated reservoir fluid, and a multiple-batch contact simulation of the condensing-gas-drive oil recovery process were performed. In the latter experiments equilibrium gas and liquid compositions were analyzed. Also, conventional, "condensing-gas-drive", long-tube displacement experiments of the reservoir fluid and gases of various richness were performed. The results of these experiments could not be satisfactorily interpreted by the conventional pseudo-ternary-diagram representation of multicom-ponent phase behavior. The results seem to be explained better by considering a bubble-point surface and a dew - point surface joined in a plait-point locus. Portions of the plait-point locus cannot be "seen" directly by the rich hydrocarbon gas because of curvature of the dew-point surface. In such a system, continuous injection of the rich gas over stationary reservoir fluid might form a zone of contiguously miscible compositions from pure rich gas to pure reservoir fluid by: (1) saturating the reservoir fluid with injected gas to the bubble-point surface; (2) creating by mass transfer with fresh injected gas a path of contiguously miscible compositions along the bubble - point surface to the plait-point locus; and (3) creating by mass transfer with additional injected gas a path of gas compositions along the dew-point surface up to the point where direct miscibility results between dew-point fluid and the injected rich gas. INTRODUCTION The use of the pseudo-ternary-phase diagram to illustrate miscible displacement phase behavior has been discussed by several authors.5,7 Such a representation of phase behavior is not rigorous, but the ternary diagram nevertheless gives a qualitative picture of what actually occurs in a miscible displacement process. Fig. 1 is a typical illustration of miscible displacement phase behavior by a ternary diagram. The multicomponent hydrocarbon system is divided into three pseudo-components: a light fraction containing methane and nitrogen, an intermediate fraction containing ethane through hexanes plus carbon dioxide, and a heavy fraction containing heptane and heavier components. A two-phase region is bounded by a dew-point curve and a bubble-point curve, which are joined at the critical point. The concept deduced from such a representation for miscible displacement by a condensing-gas-drive process is as follows: a rich gas G, which lies to the right of the limiting tie line through the critical point C, is injected into the reservoir and contacts reservoir fluid L, saturating the reservoir fluid to give bubble-point fluid L1 and equilibrium dew-point gas GI. Continued injection of rich gas changes the composition of the saturated liquid L1 through a series of liquid compositions lying along the bubble-point curve, until the critical composition C is reached, at which point direct miscibility with the rich gas is achieved. FOLLOWING careful study of the relations of the Institute to students and the younger members of the profession, the Membership Committee recommended to the Board a change of plans abolishing the Junior Associate class of membership, substituting a -Junior membership and providing for Student Associates. The Board adopted this report at its meeting on Nov. 23, and asked Counsel to draft the necessary amendments to the By-laws, and gave formal notice of intentions to amend as provided in Section I, Article XI1 of the existing By-laws. The By-laws as it is proposed to amend Article I, 11, 111, IV, X, and XI follow. The new plan requires no changes in the other Articles. The matter will come before the Board for vote on Jan. 25.

When the first batch of refined copper ingots was cast at Mantos Blancos in January 1961, eight years of exploration, development and metallurgical pioneering by Mauricio Hochschild & Co. had come to a successful conclusion. This Chilean copper deposit, located in the Atacama Desert 30 miles from Antofagasta, is now producing approximately 20,000 tons of copper per year. The Mantos Blancos deposit has been known since 1912 and various attempts had been made to work the high-grade zones before the present operation was started. The major drawback of the ore to any previous development was its chloride content which varies between 0.4% and 1.5% C1. Although the chloride ruled out the conventional leaching-electrolysis scheme, it did lend itself to the process of precipitating the copper as cuprous chloride.

The rich Tiller seam in southwest Virginia averages 10 to 15 ft in thickness. But because it is separated into two benches, mining engineers for years considered it neither physically nor economically feasible to mine. Profitable recovery of this coal has been made possible only by: full-seam mining with automatic machines; and the largest and most highly automated coal preparation plant of its kind-a plant ten stories high which washes, screens, and dries at the rate of 1500 tph, and produces both metallurgical and steam coal products. The Moss No. 3 preparation plant of Clinchfield Coal Co. Div. of Pittston Co. is located at Clinch- field, Va., only a short distance from the 450-tph Moss No. 2 plant, and was designed, built and erected by Link-Belt Co.

Loveday (National Institute for Metallurgy, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa) - The paper and subsequent technical note' describing a method of determining the parameters of the three-parameter size-distribution equation developed in the paper were read with much interest. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. RESERVE Mining Co., owned jointly, by Armco Steel Corp. and Republic Steel Corp., controls 9% miles of magnetic taconite ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range lying between Mesaba and Birch Lake. The ore reserve which can be mined by open pit methods is conservatively estimated at 1.5 billion tons under a shallow, loose overburden requiring no rock stripping. Taconite now being mined is in the upper cherty horizon. It has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of gabbro and most of the iron oxide is altered to magnetite. The nonmagnetic portion of the iron is practically all in the form of silicate. The magnetic iron is finely disseminated through the rock and requires grinding -150 mesh for clean liberation of the iron oxide from the gangue.

Near Bunker, Mo., in the New Lead Belt, Ozark Lead Co. operates a 6000 tpd lead-zinc mine. Mined ore is transported to the surface in three mechanized and automated steps. The mine is developed by a rectangular-shaped sublevel haulage drift 15 ft high by 28 ft wide, driven on strike below the ore zones. Ore transfer raises were driven from the sublevel at locations near the shaft, 1500 ft distant, and on subsequent 1000 ft centers. These 6 x 5-ft raises are slashed to obtain maximum storage below dump points. These dump points are located on each mining level and are of steel and concrete construction. Spiral 12 X 24-ft inclines driven from the sub-level provide access to these levels for equipment and mine utilities.

DURING the past few years the amazing developments of the chemical industry have inspired so much publicity that the feature writers assure us that we are entering a "Chemical Age," industrially as important as the "Steel Age" and the "Electric Age," so-called. Whether or not these assurances are overstatements, it is a fact that the expansion of the chemical industry during the past 25 years has been enormous. The Chemical Bureau of the War Production Board calculates the value of chemicals produced during 1944 at $8,300,000,000, no small sum even in inflated dollars. As concerns us of the Southwest oil and gas country, four significant trends of the chemical industry are most important. (1) Many of the recently developed chemical products are new creations, not substitutes,. as new and original as the invention of the light bulb, and with a field for exploitation almost as wide. (2) Many of these chemical products will enter the mass consuming markets, which require enormous tonnages of products, and such markets are setting up an industrial demand for chemicals on a mass volume basis, compared to the relatively high-priced low-volume basis ordinarily considered as the chemical outlet of the past. (3) Most of the processes involved in producing these chemicals are adapt. able to the use, all or in part, of natural gas, oil, or refinery gases as raw mate-

The following is an extract of the Engineers' licensing law recently passed by the Colorado legislature; it went into force July 10. On the board of examiners are representatives of the four national societies. R. J. Grant, of Denver, represents the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; H. I. Reid, of Colorado Springs, the. American Society of Civil Engineers; H. S. Sands, of Denver, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers; and Frank E. Shepard, of Denver, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering. Within sixty clays after the taking effect of this act the Governor of the state shall appoint a State Board of Engineer Examiners, to be composed of five members, who shall be legal residents of the state of Colorado and who shall have been engaged in the practice of engineering for at least ten years. Upon the expiration of the term of any members other than the state engineer the governor shall appoint their successors for a term of four years, from a list of five nominees elected by the licensed engineers acting in a general assembly called together for this purpose by the president of the board. Such assembly shall be held in the month of January next preceding the expiration of the terms of any members. The Board of Examiners shall adopt all necessary rules, regulations and by-laws to govern its proceedings, not inconsistent with this act or the laws of the state or of the United States.

Anticipating the increasing importance of establishing working conditions on a scientific basis, the Department of Labor created the Working Conditions Service. This service is distinct from that performed by the Mediation and Conciliation branch, which deals with working conditions and industrial relations as controversial issues between employers and employees. The work of the Service is conducted through three coordinated divisions; Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine, Division of Labor Administration, and Division of Safety Engineering. The Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine will develop standards of sanitation and medical practice in industries. The personnel of this Division is detailed from the United States Public Health Service. The Division of Labor Administration will advise employers as to employment systems and labor management policies, and assist in putting into operation standard policies.

At the Atlanta Meeting in October, 1895, a short paper was presented by Mr. R. W. Leonard on the " Assay of Auriferous Ores and Gravels by Amalgamation and the Blow-pipe" (Trans., xxv., 645), embodying the results of some very conclusive tests as to the value of the process. His arguments regarding the desirability of the process appear to be indisputable, but the practicability of the field-outfit used by him is open to question. The Province of Ontario, in which Kingston is situated, is still largely unexplored; and at the Kingstoil School of Mining we give much attention to the instruction of prospectors and the testing of ores. There are no hard and fast rules for building tailing dams, and each case has to be analyzed individually because of special conditions encountered at each location. Certain criteria are used for building dams at Climax, Colo., where they must be placed in rather steep mountain valleys on foundations that are practically impermeable. The tailing is relatively coarse, and a coarse fraction stays near the berm where it is deposited, while most of the fines flow with the water to the pool. Thirty years experience has led to certain design for toe dams, decanter lines and towers and tailing dams. A new tailing disposal area, started at Climax in 1958, will ultimately have a height of 495 ft and impound about 300 million tons. The following applies to the construction of this new tailing area.

THE Coal Division undertook its most ambitious program this year at the New York meeting, with six full' sessions and a luncheon on Monday which had a record attendance and at which the newly elected officers for the Division were announced. Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., Omaha, Neb., was unanimously selected as Chairman; J. B. Morrow, preparation manager of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., as Vice-Chairman; and H. E. Nold, Ohio State University, Secretary. During the past year two new and interesting activities were conducted by the Division directed at stimulating the interest of junior and student members. Reports were presented at the luncheon meeting by the chairmen of these commit¬tees. J. B. Morrow. chairman of the paper prize awards, and H. N. Eavenson reported on the work of the mining machinery manufacturers fellowship, the work on which was completed the first of the year. Several excellent papers are expected from these two groups for the next meeting of the Division to be held in Pittsburgh some time in the fall. The regular six-session program was filled from start to finish with interesting papers and much discussion, but unfortunately not enough time for the latter. The papers covered the field of prospecting, mining methods, preparation, utilization, mechanization, and safety, and all through the program we were constantly reminded of the value and need of research in the coal industry.

The Fifth Class, that of the OXIDES, is subdivided into three sections, according to the positive element present. The oxides of the non-metal silicon are placed by themselves, but it will be noted that the compounds of the related element titanium are included with those of the metals proper. This last is made necessary by the fact that in one of its forms TiOz is isomorphous with MnOp and PbOz. A series of oxygen compounds which are properly to be viewed as salts, e.g., the species of the Spinel Group and a few others, are for convenience also included in this class.

THE Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. "The method of conveying ore from the ore-pocket at the shaft collar to the railroad ore bins, whence it is transported to the reduction works, is by cars with electric haulage.The cut shows the car coupled to the electric locomotive at the moment of dumping into the railroad ore bins.The locomotives used are of several makes, usually having two 12 ½ h-p. motors of a rated draw-bar pull of about 1,200 lbs., using 500 volts D. C. Track gauge is 30 inches, and speed is six miles per hour.The car holds two skip loads-10 tons—and has sides opening outwards the full length of the car, for rapid side-dumping. One man operates car and motor, and loads and unloads the car. The trolley pole runs in both directions without reversing.Loading is clone by operating a valve connected to a compressed air lift, which raises and lowers a gate in the ore-pocket chute, the ore running by gravity into the ore car spotted under the gate of the chute. Dogs hold the sides of the car in place at the bottom, the tops of the sides being hinged, and a hand lever releases the dogs, permitting the sides by the pressure of the ore against them to open at the bottom.With little manual effort one man does the work which was formerly done, when hoisting ore with cars and cage, by 10 men under laborious conditions."
