Ix estimating the investment-value of a mining-property or plant, the value of which decreases with operation, it is often necessary to know the sum which must be set aside periodically from earnings either to renew the plant at the end off its life, or to return the capital involved when the earning-power of the investment has ceased. In such cases it is manifestly incorrect simply to divide the total amount to be retired by the number of periods (usually years) during which the investment shall be active, as the sums periodically withdrawn have a certain interest-earning power varying with the length of time they are held and with the opportunities afforded for their investment. But though the interest may be considered to accumulate regularly year by year, yet the rules and tables for compound interest do not apply, owing to the addition of a fixed amount of new money to the total at the beginning of each period. Briefly stated, the problem of sinking-funds is, to find the amount of money which must be periodically set aside at a certain rate of interest, regularly compounded, to yield a certain sum in a given, length of time. In most practical cases the interest is compounded and the fresh amount added at the same time-usually once a year-and on this basis the problem may be solved as follows

ALTHOUGH alloys of copper and silicon were examined several years ago,1 and their excellent mechanical properties were shown, it was not until C: B. Jacobs2 introduced manganese in small quantities to the alloys that they became of commercial importance. A few years ago The American Brass. Company took over the patents and commenced to manufacture the alloy under the name "Everdur." The present study of the constitution of the ternary system was undertaken in order to reach a fuller understanding of the behavior of the alloy. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK ON, THE BINARY SYSTEMS There have been no papers published dealing with the constitution of the ternary system, although some tests of the mechanical properties have been described,3 which indicate that there is a change insolubility with temperature.

DULUTH ENGINEERS' CLUB The engineers of Duluth, Minn., have taken the first steps to form a Duluth Engineers' Club by a meeting on May 20, at the Kitchi Gammi Club. At present, Duluth has no club embracing all engineers, although the environment is splendid for the growth of an engineers' organization. Within reasonable 'distance of Duluth are over 100 members of the four large national engineering societies, a number of members of the lesser engineering societies, and many non-member engineers. Until the Duluth Association of Civil Engineers was formed, four years' ago, these engineers had no common ground of meeting, and a force representing education, experience, and high ideals lay dormant. About 70 engineers were present at the organization meeting, and favorable responses were received from others who could not be present. F. E. House, President of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad, outlined the objects of the meeting, calling attention to the importance of the engineer in all lines of activity in the war and the splendid qualities of American engineers in France. W. H. Woodbury outlined the plan, stating the three objects of the club as professional, social, and civic. Four plans of membership have been considered: First, an organization for all professional engineers, junior engineers, and associates, with .different status for each; second, an organization of members of the four big national societies; third, an organization of members and a limited number of associates; fourth, professional engineers, only, all on equal standing.

THE absence of a convenient glossary of terns connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction ; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place' individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who hays favored me with ' assistance and advice. Conservationists have launched an attack on the mining law of 1872, accusing it of permitting the min- ing industry to rob the public and despoil the environment while doing it. Michael McCloskey, executive director of the Sierra Club, and one who has made known his opposition to the law said, "environmentalists are unified in their agreement that repeal . . . is one of conservation's most urgent tasks . . . ." Charles H. Callahan, executive vice president of the National Audubon Society, paralleled McCloskey's sentiments, calling the law a "disgrace" and a "give-away." In his opening statement before the Senate Interior Committee, Chairman Henry M. Jackson (D-Wash.) said that legislation pending before the committee would put the hard rock minerals under a leasing system as is the case with oil and gas.

The American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers have established the . Engineering Societies Employment Bureau under the management of their Secretaries. One of the purposes of the Bureau is to keep in touch with all engineering firms with a view to supplying them with desirable men. Plans are under way to assist in placing men who are retiring from the government service. The Bureau is not intended to be exclusively for the benefit of unemployed members, of the Founder Societies; non-members who are introduced properly will be registered. Information, registration forms, etc., may be obtained from the office of the Bureau, Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39 Street, New York, Room 903.

Many of the current methods for producing metallic silver particles having specific characteristics involve several steps, are time consuming and subject to contamination. The novel non-aqueous chemistry of silver and copper is used in a simple two step process capable of producing high purity silver powders of specific size and shape. The chemical basis of the process involves the manipulation of the equilibrium -- Cu(I1) + Ag [=]Cu(1) + Ag(1). The addition of at least 50% (V/V) acetonitrile (CH3CN) stabilizes both Cu(1) and Ag(1) ions in aqueous sulphate medium, and the metallic silver dissolves. Removal of the volatile nitrile by distillation reverses the equilibrium and silver powder is precipitated. The nature of the powder depends on the presence of additives such as gelatin, thiourea and polyacrylamide.

The two mines are in the same hill, Bertha being on the northern 'slope and Falling Cliff on the top and opposite slope. The formation is No. 2 limestone. C.-In the service tests, the Advisory Committee on Aeronautics considered it highly necessary, particularly for seaplanes, to find out whether or not it was necessary to paint exposed parts; reports have been obtained but have not been pub-lished at the present time. Investigations were carried on at three Navy Yards. On just a hurried examination, the inspection was made about two weeks ago and the results are now being digested an examination shows that the aluminum alloys, whether painted or unpainted, stand up very well. It apparently is not necessary to paint, which, of course, is a very important item in the question of the weight of seaplanes. We will be able to report on that, I expect, probably at the next meeting.

The rate of CaO dissolution into slag melts is of great importance in the field of pyrometallurgy. In this study the mechanism of CaO dissolution has been investigated by observing the melt heated on Pt-filament directly through microscope together with a help of X-ray micro analyser to find out a distribution of each element around CaO crystal. The direct observation reveals that the CaO dissolution tends to proceed by the action of molten slag entering between CaO crystal and newly formed 2Ca0. Si02 layer through cracks. The effect of slag composition on the formation of 2CaO- SiO2 layer will be shown as well as the effect of halogenides addition on the destruction of this compound layer.

Meeting of Apr. 23, 1915.-The Iron and Steel Committee was authorized in its discretion to defer the date of acceptance of papers for the Hadfield Research Prize to Nov. 1, 1916. The sum of $250 was appropriated as a guarantee fund to establish a Library Research Bureau in co-operation with the other Founder Societies. The sum of $50 was appropriated to the Puget Sound Section. The sum of $250 was appropriated to the San Francisco Section. The sum of $125 was appropriated to the St. Louis Section. The matter of memorializing the New York State Constitutional Convention was referred to the New York Section of the Institute with authority to act as a Section only. Upon recommendation of the Committee on Membership, 50 Mem¬bers, 1 Associate, and 6 Junior Members were elected.

An engineering company owning patents for improvements in steel manufacture which have been adopted at many works in America, desires. to secure the services of a technical iron and steel metallurgist as assistant to its chief metallurgical engineer.

The St. Lawrence Seaway and power project has received the support of the Canadian Parliament, with the House of Commons approving a bill that authorizes the Government to proceed with construction of the seaway, with or without U. S. cooperation. Itogan Mining Co., third largest gold mine in the Philippines, reopened in December under the management of Marsman and. Co. The 'mine was almost totally destroyed during the occupation. The International Materials Conference committee on copper, lead, and zinc has recommended against stockpiling during the: first quarter of 1952 because of the current demands for defense needs. The General Services Administration has told producers who have contracts calling for delivery of copper to the stockpile during the first quarter of 1952 that they do not need to make those deliveries.
