Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U808. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U308 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pct U308 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8, with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct.

THIS paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferrous metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties-and this we consider to constitute the elements of metal technology-might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary

Since the blast Fired August 15th, 1878, which was described by Mr. Clark," and up to November, 1881, we have fired three smaller blasts, one in the southwest corner of the quarry and two in the buttress of rock left standing by the first blast near the mouth of the main gangway. We intended to keep an exact account of the stone thrown down by each blast, but the large quantity required by the furnaces since the beginning of 1879, and the time taken up by more important matters, have caused this to he neglected, so that it is not possible to separate exactly the cost and quantity of stone obtained during this time by the old method from that furnished by the large blasts; yet as the latter quantity has been much greater than the former, some notion of the value of the large-blast plan may be reached by comparing the figures from September, 1878, to November, 1881, with those for times when the old system was exclusively used. Since 1878 wages have been raised, lowered, and again raised, and to get a year of sufficiently large production for fair comparison it is necessary to go back to that ending April, 1872, when wage? and supplies were different from present prices and from those of 1878,.

The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, 'American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them if certain properties. United Engineering. Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Don and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

TWO very interesting sessions on mine ventilation were held on Monday. George S. Rice, chairman of the Mine Ventilation Committee, presided at the morn-ing session. Formal reports from two subcommittees were presented, as well as two technical papers. Daniel Harrington, for the subcommittee on metal mining, gave a most interesting report, devoting most of it to a review of the literature that had appeared during the past year, to the cooling of mine air, and to a discussion of mine fires. In the absence of Dr. R. R. Sayers, chairman of the Physiological subcommittee, Mr. Harrington gave a resume of that report. The main points covered were in connection with silicosis but some attention was also paid to the associated prob-lems of air cooling and humidity. The paper by Prof. W. S. Weeks on the "Air-Current Regulator" was briefed by Prof. A. C. Callen. Pro-fessor Weeks brought out the fact that the common application of Murgue's equivalent-orifice formula to regulator problems was incorrect, inasmuch as the dis-charge from the regulator was not released into the open air but into a slow-moving current beyond the regulator. He applied the shock-loss theory of Bordoni to the problem and worked out a formula for solving regulator problems, giving coefficients of contraction he had determined experimentally.

GRAHAM BRIGHT,* East Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bee-hive coke ovens are usually located at the mines, where the gases from the ovens are not strongly objectionable because the communities are not thickly built up. The byproduct oven will naturally he located near centers of industry, to which the coal can be brought from different directions and desirable mixtures can be made; where also the byproducts can be readily marketed, while the gas can be utilized for industrial and domestic purposes. Not much thought seems to have been given to the gases escaping from the byproduct coke oven, which are more or less objectionable in thickly populated sections. When the byproduct oven shall have been more widely installed, this question is likely to become serious, and it will be necessary to apply remedies. May I ask what has been done, or is going to be clone, in this direction? S. A. Moss, ? Lynn, Mass.-One cause of escaping gas is that the gas exhausters do not supply the proper suction. If a satisfactory regulating governor is applied and the correct kind of gas exhauster is used, the trouble will be eliminated. J. I. THOMPSON,? The smoke caused by the operation of the byproduct coke ovens is infinitely less than that caused by bee-hive ovens.

There is no simple answer to the question, "What is the meaning of life?" The expressions of life are so multiple that life has different meanings for different spheres of thought, such as art, science, or philosophy; and it conveys a different significance to different persons, according to their individual development and interests. Life is complex from a philosophical point of view. The meaning of life is superficially positive and unmistakable only when approached from a mechanistic view- point; namely, that of biology or biochemistry, since these deal with the physicochemical basis of life processes. However, such a purely mechanistic or biochemical approach to the significance of life and the interpretation of man's behavior on the basis of purely physical laws is certain to run into trouble. Similarly, a concentration of effort upon materialistic advances in world progress is extremely dangerous. The possible consequences of splitting the atom, development of guided missiles, and possible bacterial warfare are timely examples. Man becomes more self-reliant as he extends his scientific and technologic discoveries and learns how to shape natural conditions to his own desires. When man will be able to travel to other planets in atomically propelled space ships and destroy whole worlds by pushing a button, a possibility which now seems to be within the realm of the predictable future, he will need the strong-

A well known but unexplained experimental fact is the observation1 that aluminum shows a pure <111> wire texture, in contrast with other fcc metals, which have a mixed <100> <111> texture at moderate reductions. A possibly related single crystal observation on aluminum is the following:2 under tensile deformation <111> single crystals are stable (maintain their original axial orientation), while <100> crystals are unstable at room temperature and become stable at lower temperatures. This suggests that at room temperature, as proposed by Yen and Hibbard,3 the single <111> texture obtains be- cause <100> orientations are unstable in the poly-crystal. It also implies that for wire drawing at lower temperature a <100> component of the texture might be expected since that orientation is then stable. This possibility has been examined by wire drawing at temperatures near 77°K. The apparatus was designed to be used with an existing draw-bench, a steel trough acting as die holder and containing sufficient liquid nitrogen to immerse the wire entering the die. The trough is insulated by a styrofoam container to prevent excessive boiling of the bath. The wire emerging from the die enters a polyethylene tube, into the far end of which the grips are inserted. OBSERVING in the Engineering and Mining Journal, of January 16th, 1875, page 35, a report of a brief discussion upon the nature and origin of this unique and interesting coal, I take the liberty-on thus finding it a subject of interest to members of the Institute, and especially as my name came into this discussion-to communicate some results which may serve at least to overthrow certain erroneous ideas that have prevailed. While I would not claim to have made much approach to an understanding of this mineral-the whole of what I call Apozoic Mineralogy being as yet dark and almost unknown ground-yet I believe I have shown that few minerals of such importance and abundance, and so long before the world, have been so singularly misunderstood. On first examination of a sample of the substance to which the name of carbonite has been given, my surprise was not small, at failing to recognize in it one individual characteristic of true coke; neither the hardness, lustre, color, streak, porosity, sonorosity, structure, fracture, nor any of the so-called "pyrognostic" characters. Indeed, comparison with any coke, or variety or modification thereof, seemed altogether fantastic. Therefore the controversy regarding supposed trap dykes, whose existence at the locality is denied by some, seems useless, as we have no question of a natural coking, there having been no coking at all.

A. J. Goldak and J. Gordon Parr (U)iuersity of Alberta) —Margolin and Ence&apos;s paper reached us only a few days after we had submitted a paper on the structure of Ti2Cu to the AIME. Here, however, we only wish to point out an error in the paper (page 321): "Karlsson has reported the crystal structure of the first intermediate phase occurring in the Ti-rich portion of the Ti-Cu system to be face-centered tetragonal." Karlsson actually reported the structure of Ti3Cu (i.e., "the first intermediate phase") to be primitive tetragonal with four atoms per lattice point: Cu at 0, 0, 0; and Ti at 1/2, 1/2, 0; 0, 1/2, 1/2; and 1/2, 0, 1/2. Thus, Karlsson suggests a primitive lattice with an ordered arrangement of atoms located at corners and face-centers: Ence and Margolin suggest a random body-centered tetragonal structure—-with which our results agree. E. Ence and H. Margolin (authors&apos; reply)— We do not agree that Karlsson has not reported the structure of Ti3Cu as face-centered tetragonal. The fact that Cu atoms are located at the corners and titanium at the face-centers does not indicate that the lattice is not face-centered. We are pleased that the discussers&apos; results agree with our own.

SOLID-STATE transformations at low temperatures are frequently studied by optical metallography. Greninger and ooradian&apos; and Hull and Gar-wood2 have examined the martensitic-type transformations in 0-phase Cu-Zn alloys during continuous cooling below room temperature. The lowest range of temperatures in the apparatus described by these investigators is limited to approximately 110°K. Present studies of reversible first-order phase transitions near liquid-helium temperatures have necessitated the design of a new cold-stage cryo-stat for optical metallography. The features of interest of this instrument are as follows: a) temperatures down to 4.Z°K are obtainable; b) the specimen is always under vacuum, thereby avoiding the condensation of moisture; c) specimens can be rapidly cooled or heated at varying rates, thus permitting studies of transformation hysteresis. Fig. 1 shows the details of the cryostat. All major parts are made of type 304 stainless steel. Both helium and nitrogen cans are Heliarc-welded to the helium filling tube, permitting the use of a common shielding can. Hence, the over-all weight and the area of the evacuated surface are mini- mized. The copper sample holder is screwed into the bottom of the helium can. To assure good thermal contact between the sample holder and the refrigerant, an indium ribbon is placed on the threads

The correlation of power consumed by a tumbling mill with the dimensions, speed, and load has been attempted by three principal methods. One of these, the torque formula, has been reviewed critically elsewhere. This approach, while analytical, disregards the individual motion and speed of the tumbling bodies and assumes that the gross geometry of the entire load is sufficient to establish the power requirement. A more general approach, using dimensional analysis, has been applied in this laboratory by the present authors, and more recently by Rose. This disregards the internal conditions within the mill entirely and in effect is an empirical procedure for correlating data. Finally, the complete analysis of tumbling mill dynamics as first made by Davis attempts to develop the power requirement from individual ball and rod paths and velocities. Although Davis&apos; result is applicable only at a single speed for a given size and load it could be useful, since his optimum speed is at the upper limits of conventional tumbling mill practice. Where power values predicted by the Davis equation were compared with actual mill requirements, they were found too low for small mills and much too high for the largest mills. This suggested that the agreement with actual intermediate range requirements might be fortuitous, and the development of the equation was examined critically.
