THERE are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely inn use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all, the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a possible demand; nor does it include extra pattern,- rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns are, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,-a heavy bead,. light web and flanges, and a good angle :to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there am thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. Of the 60-lb. rails, there is only one of the pear-head type, while a dozen of the bevelled head templets cannot be distinguished from each other * From all the works 188 patterns were sent to me as standard. Of these I found 119 different shapes and 69 duplicates. † Since this paper was read I have seen at the Bethlehem Iron. Works the templet of a 68-pound Lehigh Valley rail, with the bevelled head, usually called the "Chanute" head, and marked "Templet of 1872." This is shown on Plate II. I learn that iron rails, with bevelled heads, were rolled at Bethlehem prior to 1870.

A dilatometric determination of the a + ß region temperature limits was performed on vacuum melted Zircaloy-2. The temperature of transformation for a-a+ß and a+ß — ß on heating and cooling as a function of rate of heating and heat treating history was studied. The limits were found to be 815° to 830°C to 975° to 995°C on heating and from 960° to 930°C to 785° to 770°C on cooling. A 5° to 15°C increase was observed for a- a + ß with increased rate of heating and a 20° to 30°C decrease for ß - a + ß with increased rate of cooling. 1 HE transformation temperature for pure zirconium has been determined by many investigators1-5 using metallography, electrical resistivity measurements, and dilatometry. The effect of the rate of cooling on the transformation temperature of zirconium has been studied by Hayes and Kaufmann6 and Duwez,7 and the effect of alloying elements by pfei18 and McGeary.13 Since the development of Zircaloy-2, the limits of the a + ß region for that alloy have been also determined. The first reported temperature for the a — a + a transformation in Zircaloy-2 was 900°C and for a + ß - ß 1000C Subsequent studies by Picklesimer and damson" indicated the beginning of the transformation at 810°C, and the metallographic study by the Technology Group of the Special Materials Section at the Westinghouse Bettis plant1' suggested that 820°to 830°C is the temperature of transformation. The dilatometric investigation by the latter group yielded 830°C for the beginning of the transformation. Thomas and Forscher12 set the beginning of the transformation at 900 °C on heating and the end of the transformation at 870°C on cooling. This investigation of low copper-nickel silvers was untiertaken to check the work of Lèon Guillet on special brasses and to determine, more accurately, the effect of the addition of nickel on the mierostructure of the binary alloys of copper arid zinc. It was hoped that the results could be successfully applied to the practical production of low copper-nickel silvers. To explain the results of his investigations on special brasses, Lèon Guillet evolved his conception of "fictitious compositions." He states,' in his general conclusions, that on the introduction of a small amount of a third metal to a copper-zinc alloy, it enters into solid solution with the normal constituents up to saturation, but by so doing it brings the ternary alloy into a state microscopically equivalent to a binary copper-zinc alloy of fictitious composition, and physically more nearly like the latter than the brass containing copper-zinc in the ratio actually present. The physical properties of the ternary alloy, when compared to the same properties of an actual brass of the fictitious composition, are modified by the natural properties of the third element. Beyond the point of saturation, a special constituent appears and the above generalization no longer holds. For example, if a 60:40 brass has 4 per cent. of tin substituted for 4 per cent. of zinc, the actual composition would analyze 60:36:4. Assuming that 1 per cent. of tin plays the same part as 2 per cent. of zinc, the proportions of copper and equivalent zinc may be stated as 60 parts of copper and 44 parts of zinc, which, figured to 100 per cent., gives an analysis of 57.7 per cent. of copper and 42.3 per cent. of zinc, the fictitious composition for a 60:36:4 tin brass. The relation between ternary alloys containing copper and zinc together with a third metal, and the microscopically equivalent binary alloy of copper and zinc, may be expressed mathematically.

FoR most of their practical applications metals are required to withstand stresses of appreciable magnitude: indeed, it id because they possess the quality of resisting stress without becoming permanently deformed that they find such extensive use in the service of man. Metals and alloys must, in service, usually behave as elastic substances—or nearly so. It is not difficult to satisfy this condition at ordinary temperatures. Iron and its alloys, especially the steels, are at normal temperatures excellent elastic bodies, capable of satisfying most of the mechanical requirements of the engineer: where electrical, chemical or other properties are impor-tant, which cannot be met by steels, it is usually possible to find a non-ferrous alloy such as nickel, copper or aluminum, which will prove satisfactory. When the metals or alloys are not inherently sufficiently elastic, cold-working or heat-treatment may develop elastic properties to a sufficient extent for practical needs. By means of relatively simple, rapid tests we can measure such properties as elastic modulus, limit of proportionality and proof stress, upon which design can be based with confidence. The case of the soft metals, such as lead and tin, is well known to be exceptional. They possess no definite limit of elasticity, and the value of proof stress or tensile strength depends to a great extent on the speed with which the test is carried out. Design here must be based on other considerations than a well-established theory of the proportionality of stress and strain. It is now generally recognized that steels and non-ferrous alloys possess at temperatures not greatly exceeding that of the atmosphere, characteristics quite different from those existing at ordinary temperatures, and that they assume qualities similar to those of the soft metals. Not only have they no limit of elasticity, but the proof stress and the ultimate stress depend on the time of application of the load. Flow under load may persist for long periods of time, possibly indefinitely, and the determination of a true maximum stress becomes a matter of great difficulty.

Steels available for mine-shaft applications are discussed, and the use of steel linings for round and rectangular shafts is reviewed. For rectangular shafts, frameworks constructed of square or rectangular steel tubes offer advantages. Also, corrugated steel sheeting provides a suitable alternative to timber lagging for spanning between the main shaft supports. For round shafts, self-supporting cylindrical steel liners, with circumferential stiffeners to prevent collapse, have been used to depths up to 6000 ft. Several large-diameter round shafts have been constructed with a concrete lining and an internal framework: of high-strength low-alloy steel tubes. It is concluded that in any new shaft construction steel designs should be investigated as economical alternatives to designs using other materials.

ANALYSIS of the requirements for gun perforation equipment suitable for penetrating casing and cement showed that these points would be involved: (1) Powder charges electrically detonated under high fluid lieads and at remote distances. (2) Selective firing of sliots in sequence. (3) Sufficient velocity for the bullet to penetrate at least two strings of seamless casing and all cement beyond the strings. (4) Heat-treatment of steels to withstand great pressures and penetration. (5) Esclusiorl of fluid under extremely high hydrostatic pressure. (6) Stranded steel wire line acting as weight - suspending and current - carrying medium. (7) Firing controls operated above the surface. (8) Determining gun depth and suspended weight by means of the wire line. (9) Portability for field use.

DESPITE the zero weather of Monday, the morning meeting on nonferrous ore-reduction metallurgy got under way promptly under the efficient control of Arthur A. Center. The first and third portions of the paper on the Tri-State region were presented by B. M. O'Harra, with R. H. Lowe substituting for co-author Illidge on the second part. Attention was drawn to the compact design attainable when "Sink and Float" was employed as a means of primary concentration. The teaching profession should welcome this concise correlation of data from such a renowned center of lead and zinc production. H. R. Hanley and C. R. Hay¬ward were much interested in the mechanics of charging, manufacture, and life of the retorts.

Central Sweden's Grängesberg underground iron ore mine, which accounts for more than three million tons of pellet product annually, is experiencing a major changeover to continuous block-caving. The newly-adopted method, complete with a total revamping of mining equipment, will be fully operational by 1975. For the past 15 years, Sweden's Grängesberg mine has been mined using two different methods. Those ore thicknesses of 117 ft or greater (they comprise about 70% of the total area) are worked by block-caving techniques with cross-cutting carried out on each 195-ft working level, and loading at the foot wall on each 58-78-ft level. Sub-level caving is carried out in all ore sections less than 117 ft thick.

In both Canada and the United States, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been passed by Federal, State and/or Provincial Legislatures. These regulations usually require the distribution of an acceptable prospectus which provides essential background information about the issuer, the project and the share offering. when the public offering has been accepted, the unlisted company may then seek a listing of its shares for trading on a Stock Exchange. Once listed, the company will be subject to rules of the Stock Exchange. This paper will deal with the specific information required for inclusion into a prospectus being submitted for a resource company and particularly those parts of concern to mining engineers and geologists.

C. E. Murphey, Jr., has presented a relevant, simplified comparison of drill string response when drilling with and without bumper subs. His point that drilling without bumper subs gives conditions further from resonance is valid. Thus, drilling from a floating vessel without bumper subs is undoubtedly feasible, especially when the heave motions of the drilling vessel are small. When these heave motions become large, an evaluation of the magnitude of the change of bit weight is a requirement for a realistic comparison between using and not using bumper subs. As Murphey states, this evaluation should include the effects of damping and presence of drill collars. The analysis would be similar to that presented in our Appendix, but is far beyond the scope of this Reply. ***

IN 1945 the Bagdad Copper Corp. decided to change from block caving to open-pit mining. By early 1948 the conversion was completed and production was increased from 1500 tons per day to 4000 tons per day. Open-pit mining costs decreased approximately 40 pet from the cost of producing ore by the underground method. At present one P & H model 1400 all-electric 4 1/2-yd shovel and one P & H model 1055 Diesel 3-yd shovel are used continuously for stripping. One 21/2yd North- west shovel handles the ore. Delivery of a new P & H 1055 electric shovel for stripping is expected this month. Blasthole drilling is performed with two Bucyrus model 22 and two Bucyrus model 27 churn drills.

PLANS for development of the San Manuel ore- body have been worked out and are progressing parallel with construction of the surface plant. This property lies in the Old Hat mining district, Pinal County, Ariz., about a mile south of Tiger where the St. Anthony mine once produced gold, molybdenum, vanadidn, lead, and zinc. Two development shafts have been completed and serve as ingress for preparation of the 1475 haulage level and 1415 grizzly level. Three other shafts are being put down. The Nos. 3A and 3B shafts will provide the ore hoisting facilities. The No. 4 shaft, now being sunk, will be at the main mine service and supply yard, with primary function to provide the mine with supplies.
