The production of petroleum in Illinois in 1928 was approximately 6,500,000 bbl., a decline of about 500,000 bbl. from the previous year and of about 1,500,000 bbl. from 1924. Production increased about 200,000 bbl. in Indiana to slightly less than 1,000,000 bbl. Production for 1929 is estimated at approximately 6,000,000 bbl. for Illinois and 1,000,000 bbl. for Indiana. Illinois Because production from most of the wells in the state has declined to a small daily average and the low prices for crude oil discouraged wildcatting, the number of wells drilled fell below that for any previous year since the development of commercially important production in the state. The Ohio Oil Co. discovered a pool of apparent commercial importance in southwestern Illinois near Dupo, in St. Clair County, and favorable showings of oil were encountered in a well in southeastern Illinois, near Harrisburg in Saline County. New production from the Dupo area is expected to check the rate of decline for the state. THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. INTRODUCTION IN any discussion of mining one is repeatedly confronted with the difficulty of dealing with so many variable conditions. It is not an exact science and in the choice of a method each varying factor has a certain weight, which, in many cases, experience alone can determine. In mathematical terms, it is a function of many variables. A discussion of mining also loses much of its value unless, costs are considered, because the expectation of profit is the only excuse for carrying on mining at all. As conditions vary they cause fluctuations in cost and there are few operations to which a definite cost can be assigned. The character of the ore may make it difficult to drill, yet because of the ease with which it breaks the total cost of drilling and blasting may be low. In preparing this article the attempt has been, not to cover the whole field of mining, but to describe the different methods of stoping and mining which have distinct principles. In addition to this an effort has been made to show the advantage of dissecting the methods into their detailed operations and applying to these a mathematical study as an aid to the judgment in determining which is the best method to adopt, or in attempting to reduce the cost of a method already in use. Methods of mining include stoping, caving, and various methods of working large deposits which, in addition to the method of actually breaking the ore, require elaborate and definite plans of, development of the orebody. The ordinary methods of stoping are too familiar to all for any elaborate discussion, but it has seemed advisable to review the subject and give the principal advantages' and disadvantages of the different methods.

IN the microscopic examination of aircraft-engine parts made of heat-treated alloy steels, the writer has been forcibly impressed by the failure of the usual etching processes to disclose any but gross defects in heat treatment. It seemed particularly desirable to bring out the grain size of the steel, which is indicated in the ordinary etching processes chiefly by the change in orientation of structure from grain to grain. After various attempts, a fairly successful method has been found, which is here presented in the hope that it may be of use to those who have occasion to examine these steels in the heat-treated condition. The specimens worked with have been mostly chrome-nickel steels heat treated (that is, hardened and tempered) to a Brinell hardness of around 300. A few experiments with other specimens will be referred to later. Briefly, the method employed consists in etching the steel about 10 min. in a fresh solution of picric acid in ethyl alcohol, and then rubbing off the smudge of carbonaceous matter on moist broadcloth. Different samples of almost identical analysis; heat treatment, and physical properties (including resistance to impact) respond quite differently to this treatment. In some, the grain boundaries are developed quite readily, while iii others, especially ill those whose grain is unusually fine or in which the final hardening heat, has not quite obliterated the previous crystallization, the results are more obscure. The exact time of etching to secure the best results also differs for various samples, and the greatest success is usually attained by a process of "tinkering." Such a process is illustrated in a series of micrographs, the first six of which were taken at a magnification of 300 diameters.

The purpose of this report is to supply the Coal Classification Committee' with information for use in the formulation of a system of classification of coals according to their uses. Consideration is given here only to the nonferrous metallurgical operations that consume relatively large amounts of coal or coke; i. e., the smelting of copper, lead, zinc and aluminum. For all of these uses, coal of certain definite qualities is desired. Geographical location, however, often determines whether these qualities can be specified. In some instances the preferred qualities must be specified, regardless of cost. In others, quality may be sacrificed for lower cost, although the best quality consistent with cost is usually the determining factor. These considerations will be outlined in the following discussion under the various uses, which, however, will illustrate the impracticability of preparing definite specifications for coal used in the majority of the nonferrous industries. Coal and Coke in Copper Metallurgy From the standpoint of coal consumption, copper smelting and refining operations are the most important of the nonferrous metallurgical uses of coal. As nickel ores treated in the United States and Canada are associated with copper, the first step in their recovery is really a copper-smelting operation; accordingly, the following considerations under copper smelting apply equally to nickel. Copper Smelting in Reverberatory Furnaces.—For a long time, rever-beratory copper-smelting furnaces were fired with lump coal burned on grates in a fire box. Later, lump coal was displaced by pulverized coal or oil burned directly in the smelting chamber. Recently, natural gas has been used in several plants, although producer gas was used for this purpose at Great Falls as early as 1903.2 Requirements for coal used in

The immediate vicinity of the sea-shore, affording special facility for the exportation of ores, makes it possible to work certain mines in the Vladivostok district, which, in more remote places of Siberia., would remain unproductive. Outside of the city of Vladivostok the population is small and the country is very little prospected. Additional discoveries of valuable deposits like the large body of calamine which has recently been opened in the neighborhood of earlier worked lead-silver ores, in the Tetiuhe valley, are still in the field of possibilities. For many years gold alone was produced, in part from the coastal rivers and in part from a quartz-vein on Askold island near Vladivostok. But the production is diminishing, and prospectors are looking for other rivers in the interior, such as the tributaries of the Ussuri. These rivers are now more accessible than formerly, due to the slow but gradual development of colonization by the Russian peasants. The few natives of the country, called Orodjones, are of the Chinese race. They resemble the North American Indian and are hardy fur-hunters. They have given some attention to placers and have already shown good specimens of gold-dust from the rivers Iman, Bikin, Noto, etc. Coal-mining was begun in the Vladivostok region more than 20 years ago, but in a somewhat irregular way. The industry is not as yet important and the best coal-seams are badly prospected, or are even neglected. Copper, lead, and iron exist in several places. The amounts give some encouragement to the anticipation that the discoveries will give rise to important metallurgical works. I here present a review of the various deposits, based upon such safe information as is in hand, when I have not drawn upon my personal observations. The following pages present data accepted by many geochemists and geologists regarding the succession of minerals and the temperatures of formation in ore deposits affiliated with igneous rocks. They also present the individual views of the author on the composition of the solutions that were active and on the mode of deposition. He does not regard these views as speculations or hypotheses but as forming a well motivated and consistent theory. It is not certain, however, that all investigators will subscribe to them. Introduction The mining engineer may not always be interested in the field of stability and temperature of origin in the mineralogy of ore deposits, but he certainly is interested in the succession of minerals because this has a definite bearing on the understanding of the ores and on the best processes of extraction. It is proposed, therefore, to summarize in plain language the principal features of succession as shown in metallic ores. Chemical analyses of ores are always important, but the real knowledge of succession—sometimes called paragenesis-—of ores has been gained only in the last 20 years, by the study of polished sections. The study of hand specimens threw much light on the subject—as shown, for instance, by Breithaupt, whose "Paragenesis," written a hundred years ago, is still useful—but the results have been modified by our slowly gained understanding of the processes of replacement. Indications of Temperature Melting Points.—In the first place, a distinction must be made as to whether the ore is a product of magmatic consolidation, of pegmatitiza-tion or of hydrothermal activity. Most of the ores fall in the latter class. In any case, the melting points, although of importance, are not definite indications. The paper discusses simultaneous heat conduction and diffusion. These problems may arise in slag-metal kinetics and in connection with rapid heating or cooling of specimens. A mathematical formulation is given and it is shown that the transients due to either the variability of the diffusion coefficient with temperature, or thermal diffusion, are unlikely to be important for molten or solid metals and slags. The negligibility of these effects is due to the large values of the ratio thermal diffu-sivity/molecular diffusivity. In many problems relating to transport-controlled metallurgical kinetics the diffusion process is accompanied by the transfer of heat; large-scale metal refining or metal reduction may be quoted as examples. It has been shown that due to turbulent mixing in these systems the relevant transport phe- nomena are best described in terms of "surface renewal models" which require the solution of the unsteady-state diffusion equation.1-1 Problems involving simultaneous diffusion and heat conduction are also encountered in the laboratory in connection with rapid heating or cooling of specimens. The effect of variable temperature on diffusion may be twofold: a) in the absence of "cross effects" the problem, due to variable temperature, is that of diffusion with a variable diffusion coefficient; b) if the Soret Effect is nonzero, thermal diffusion must also be taken into account in the formulation. Although information is available on thermal-diffusion transients in a steady-temperature gradient,4'5 little work has been done on the effect of unsteady temperatures on either the diffusion coefficient or on thermal diffusion.' In the following a formulation is given and solutions presented with a view of examining the areas where these effects may be important.

THE milling of talc, as is the case of many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, have a good slip, be free from grit and iron, uniform, and fine grained; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color tales might be utilized, as in Germany and-Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored tales.

The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February." -Mark Twain Although the preceding chapters describe the type of preliminary evaluation frequently performed in the mining industry, it has been assumed that input data are known with certainty-clearly an enormous simplification. In reality, estimates of ore grade, mining cost, metal price, etc., are subject to varying degrees of uncertainty due to the inability to predict the future with much precision. Management would probably not, for example, be equally attracted to two projects each offering a 20% DCFROI-one for a new gold venture in Nevada and the other for an undersea manganese nodule operation in the Pacific. The high risk with the latter investment tells the obvious; there is more to investment decision-making than a deterministic analysis using "best estimates" of input parameters. The science of decision theory normally distinguishes between decisions under uncertainty, where probabilities of various outcomes are unknown; and decisions under risk, where such probabilities can be estimated. The first case is rarely en- countered in practical capital investment analysis in mining, so the remainder of this chapter focuses on that class of problems where rational probability distributions for the future states of input variables can be estimated. RISK IN MINING Risk in the context of this chapter is the unforeseen deviation of individual cash flows from expected values for a capital project. The equipment of a laboratory in which students are to be trained for practical work in metallurgical chemistry presents many difficulties not encountered in the fitting up of a commercial or works laboratory. At an industrial plant the chemical work required usually demands the frequent repetition of a comparatively limited number of methods. In a steel-works laboratory, for instance, by far the larger part of the work consists in making determinations of the usual impurities found in iron and steel; at a smelter the great bulk of the work is confined to the analysis of ores, slags, mattes, and fuels, which involve the frequent application of perhaps not more than a dozen different methods. In a laboratory of this character, therefore, those operations most frequently applied may each have a certain section set apart and fitted permanently with such apparatus as best facilitates the carrying out of this one operation. The work of a commercial or custom laboratory is perhaps more varied than that of a works laboratory, but the couditions are similar in these respects, that there is usually no great need for economy of space, and that a few skilled workmen are employed to carry the determinations through from beginning to end without interruption. On the other hand, the laboratory of a technical school should be planned on such a scale that a comparatively large number of students may work at the same time, and each desk should be equipped for general metallurgical analysis. In most institutions for technical education the student's program is so arranged that his day is divided among several subjects in the course of study; only a few consecutive hours being devoted to one subject, or spent in one laboratory. Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. Because of the polarization, there is an excess of change at each metallic interface. There is an alternate method of measurement of the induced polarization effect. The electrical

(written discussion ?).¬Your secretary requested a brief description of the Russell Sage Foundation, in order that members of the Institute, if they should desire to avail themselves of it, would know what type of service is offered to them through our institution. The foundation was established in 1907 by the gift of Mrs. Russell Sage of $10,000,000 as a capital fund, the income of which is to be spent for the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States. One of the lines of activity which the foundation has felt would lead toward this end is the development and promotion of community surveys; and because the scope and methods followed in these surveys are very similar to the scope and method of much of the institution's work in general, an idea of its main activities can perhaps be given best by describing one of our surveys. Incidentally, it may be pointed out that antecedent to the survey stand at least two important facts: first, the recognition. that communities are active, not static forces, that they develop, that changes in. material and human relationships occur continuously, and that with them come new social and civic problems which must, in many cases, be diagnosed and prescribed for anew; and second, the reality of scientific advances along lines which make possible at least some measure of solution of the problems. Evidences of these changes are abundant; many of them are found in the rapid growth of cities in the last few decades. The object of this paper is to reduce to the simplest possiblc discussion the recent developments in refinery technology without resorting to detailed technical descriptions of the various items. During the year 1929, the most noteworthy tendencies have been towards the installation of more flexible plants, more unified operations, more balanced performance and greater fuel economy. In no other year in the history of petroleum refining has the industry witnessed to as great a degree the crystallization of so rnany developments in almost every phase of the art. Economic pressure has been the controlling factor, supplemented however by a market demand for more volatile anti-knock gasoline and higher quality of lubricating oils, resulting from the extended use of high-compression motors. Catalytic Hydrogenation Possibly the outstanding achievement during the year has been the beginning of construction of plants by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey for the catalytic hydrogenation of the so-called heavier and inferior petroleum oils to produce therefrom not only high yields of anti-knock gasoline, but also lubricating oils equal in quality to the best grades obtainable. It is reported that the plants will operate at a pressure of 4000 lb. or higher and temperatures in excess of 900" F. will be used. The hydrogen required for the conversion will be produced from refinery gases. This type of processing will doubtless be an important factor in balancing future operations; in other words, it can be used to eliminate present waste products and permit production of high-grade products from low-grade crude. Improvements in Lubricating Oils Another important development during the past year has been the extended use of vacuum stills, making possible the production of lubricating oils from what was formerly classed as "fuel-oil crude," or crude from

After the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public aesayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a suffciently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present, small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. The following study of flue-dirt and the influences controlling it may be interesting to many. It is published because it represents observations at about thirty furnaces at different times. It may assist in giving an impetus to the making of similar observations elsewhere. Until ten years ago, the metallic waste in furnace-gases was not considered a problem of pressing urgency in iron metallurgy—certainly not in the blastfurnace end of it. Many plants at present ignore, or pay but little attention to, top-pressures. Prior to the introduction of Mesabi ore, the losses in escaping gases, if considered at all, were regarded as thermal losses, or losses of fuel (except by those interested in lead, zinc, silver, etc.). In a high-priced material like ferro-manganese, such losses were, indeed, considered important. But the behavior of the Mesabi ores, corning, as they did, in practically inexhaustible quantities, could not be disregarded by the furnaceman. These ores came to stay. The tables appended below have purposely been altered to disguise the plant, the company and the ores used. The comparative values are maintained. In these tables, the influencing elements and conditions which are constant, or practically so, namely, size of furnace, quantity of wind, fuel used, etc., are not mentioned. The figures represent observations consistently followed up for a long period. The weights of flue-dirt were obtained from cars on which no other dirt was thrown. The analyses and calculations are based on the best of sampling. The effects of slips are excluded. Slips should not occur at well-regulated or properly-constructed furnaces, excepting under unusual and rare conditions. Allowances are made for moisture, scrap charged and silicon in the metal. Discontinuous precipitation in a iron can occur by at least two different mechanisms. These mechanisms are compared, using observations made on an Fe-22 at. pct Zn alloy and an Fe-19.5 at. pct Mo alloy. In the Fe-Zn alloy, precipitation began on grain boundaries. These boundaries moved into the supersaturated solid solution, providing nucleation sites and an easy path for diffusion. The precipitated phase pew as lamellae, perpendicular to the PRECIPITATION reactions are called discontinuous if the nucleation of particles does not occur on individual sites in the supersaturated matrix.' In discontinuous precipitation, nucleation and growth occur on a reaction front that moves into the supersaturated solution and leaves a two-phase aggregate behind. The term cellular precipitation2 has also been used, but the term autocatalytic precipi- moving reaction front. The orientation of the depleted iron differed from that of the supersaturated iron. In the Fe-Mo alloy the growing precipitate particles apparently created dislocations in the growth front which served as nucleation sites. The precipitate grew on (110) planes of the iron, and growth occurred through volume diffision. The depleted iron retained the orientation of the supersaturated solid solution. tation seems to describe the nature of such reactions best. The basic effect of such a precipitation mechanism in a solid is that it is able to move or create sites that can catalyze nucleation. Such sites can be grain boundaries and dislocations. A mechanism of autocatalytic precipitation must, therefore, include some rational process by which a grain boundary may move into the supersaturated matrix or by which dislocations may be generated in front of the reaction. BINARY and ternary alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt respond to annealing in a magnetic field by a characteristic change in the shape of their hysteresis 100p.l,2 An increase in retentivity and a decrease in coercive force produced by the magnetic treatment cause the hysteresis loop to approach the appearance of a rectangle. Materials with a rectangular hysteresis loop have made possible the contact-rectifier³ and have greatly improved the performance of pulse transformers4 and magnetic amplifiers." In the best material presently available for these applications, a 50 pct nickel-iron alloy," the desired characteristics are achieved by aligning the preferred crystallographic directions of magnetization along the rolling direction of the tape. The objective of the present study has been to produce rectangular hysteresis characteristics in materials with inherently high saturation. Iron-cobalt alloys, exhibiting saturation values up to 24,000 gausses' appeared to offer promise for the magnetic annealing technique, because they remain magnetic to very high temperatures,8 exhibit favorable magnetostriction properties: and show zero crystal energy at 42 pct cobalt.10 Among the ternary iron-cobalt-nickel alloys,7,11 response to heat treatment in a magnetic field is unfortunately limited to alloys having rather low saturation values.' It appeared interesting nevertheless, to study a series of compositions connecting the optimum composition (50/50) of the binary iron-cobalt system with the "Perminvar" composition (30 pct Fe, 25 pct Co, and 45 pct Ni). Very recently, R. Smoluchowski and R. W. Turner," have shown that under certain circumstances magnetic annealing can produce oriented recrystallization. The term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater inechanization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar inodel built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimenbions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein.
