Ultrasonic-atlenuation changes due to the formation of free dislocations have been observed during tensile tests of magnesium and LiF single crystals and samples of polycrystalline Results on the LiF and samples are similar: A preyield attenzration increase is observed which, however, be-corlzes smaller as the magnitude of the drop in load al yielding increases. This indicates that the yield point observed in these materials is due to dislovation rather than dislocation unpinning and that the initial density ' free dislocations must be low if the yield point is to be sharp,. Tests on the magnesium ere conducted at both 27" and 200C. Magnesium has the unusual property that the yield drop is larger at the higher test temperature and is accomplished by a decrease in attenuation. The latter is due principally to the temprovary pinning of detained dislocations by highly solute atoms. After strain aging., a stress as low as 0.3 bur suffices to unpin dislocations; microstrain measuements of sufficient sensitivity should. reveal plastic flow at stress levels this low IN another paper,' we describe the technique of simultaneously observing ultrasonic-attenuation changes and plastic microstrain during deformation of spher-oidized carbon steels. Changes of ultrasonic attenuation indicate damping effects caused by the oscillation of long, freely moving dislocation segments. Simultaneous microstrain measurements are used to indicate total dislocation motion. The dislocation-damping observations are most useful in the study of the early stages of deformation where the dislocation density is low and the plastic strain is small and relatively difficult to measure. Particularly interesting results are found in materials which display sharp yield points. Observations of these phenomena are reported here for three materials: single-crystal LiF and magnesium, and poly crystalline molybdenum. EXPERIMENTS Dislocation-damping effects were observed by measuring changes in acoustic attenuation with the ultrasonic-pulse method. The end faces of each of the specimens were ground flat and parallel and a quartz 10 Mc per sec, x-cut transducer was attached to one face. The bonding agents used were: a) "Nonaq" stopcock grease with magnesium, b) beeswax with LiF, and c) salol with molybdenum. With the LiF, the best acoustic signals were obtained at 45 and 50 Mc per sec; all other measurements reported are at 10 MC per sec. Saltykov's meihod for the determination of the size distribution of spherical particles from measurements made on random plane sections is extended to particle shapes which are not equiaxed. The analysis permits the deterrrzination of the size distribution of aggregates of ellipsoidol particles provided all particles have tlze same shape. V ARIOUS solutions to the problem of the determination of the size distribution of spherical particles from measurements made on random plane sections have appeared in the literature since the original solution was first published by Scheill in 1934. Solutions have been offered utilizing measurements of the diameter1y2 or area3'4 of circular sections that result when a test plane is passed through an aggregate of spherical particles, and the length of intercept5y6 that results when a test line is passed through the aggregate. To the best of the knowledge of the author, no method has been proposed which permits the determination of the size distribution of particles that are not equiaxed. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method which permits the determination of the size distribution for a specific class of particle shapes which cover awide range of axial ratios; namely, ellipsoids of revolution. In the interests of simplicity, it is necessary to limit consideration to aggregates of particles which are all similar in shape; that is, the ellipses which, by rotation about one of their axes, generate the particles, all have the same axial ratio. The size distribution, which is to be determined by the analysis, is arbitrary. It is also assumed that the section, or sections, upon which the measurements are made represent the average of all possible sections through the structure. This ideal condition can be approached as nearly as may be desired by observing a sufficient area of sections taken at random positions in a randomly oriented aggregate, and in random positions and orientations in an aggregate that has one or more axes of orientation. SIZE DISTRIBUTION FOR PROLATE ELLIPSOIDS Consider an aggregate of cigar shaped, geometrically similar particles (prolate ellipsoids), dispersed in an opaque matrix. Let the size of each particle be specified by the length of its minor axis, By Fig. 1, and the shape, q, be defined by the ratio of its minor to its major axis, B/A. Let the index, j, refer to dimensions of ellipsoids in a particular size class, and the index, i, to dimensions of an ellipse resulting from the intersection of a test plane and a particle. The size of such a section is specified by the length of its minor axis, b. Let the particles be arbitrarily divided into k size classes, and let the increment of size between each class be A, where A = &,$, B,,,being the minor axis of the ellipsoids in the largest size class. Since all sections are represented on the test plane, the minor axis of the largest of the sections observed, results from the intersection of the test plane with an ellipsoid in the largest size class at its center, and is therefore equal to Bmax Thus the increment, A = The final result will consist of the k numbers which represent the number of particles in each size class per unit volume of aggregate:

INTRODUCTION The time period from the detailed feasibility study to the post investment audity usually ranges from three to eight years depending upon the nature of the mining project considered. It is the only after the post investment audit that we know the adequacy of the assumptions made concerning operational risk assessment in the detailed feasibility or acquisition economics. The post investment audit results from numerous mining projects can best be described by a verse by John Greenleaf Whittier's Maaud Muller. It reads "For all sad words of tongue or pen the saddest are these 'It might have been!"' Dissecting the negative results of numerous mining projects we find faulty assumptions concerning markets, geology, capital investment and operational risk assessment. Although in hindsight many of these assumptions could have been considered impossible or impracticle to have forecast with any degree of certainty, we find that refined assumptions concerning operational risk assessment could have been made with only a modicum of additional "Due Diligence". Anyone who invests in a mining property should employ a much higher discount rate of future cash flow, (usually in the minimum range of 25%-30%), than he would expect from such safe investments as Treasury Bills or high grade Utility Bonds. The nature of this steep discount translates to a large uncertainty concerning the timing and actualization of assumptions contained in the detailed feasibility study. We must remember that when a project gets beyond 20 years, any contribution to the value of the project of cash flow is minimal due to the nature of the discounting process. Thus for each full or partial day lost in the development or early operation stage of a project, the financial impact will be greater than similar lost days later on in the project. Adequate operational risk assissment is particularly critical when bidding on competitive tenders for coal deposists in remote locations such as the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia. Because of the market attractiveness of these coal deposits for supplying end users in the Far East, Middle East and Europe, state governments require competitive tender biddings via the Authority to Prospect process. Front end bonuses and super royalty payments must be commited before the actual mining conditions are known. Time to submit firm offers from the actual request for proposal vary from 90 to 120 days. Thus any operational risk assessment must be detailed, realistic and reflective of the actual project. When one searches the literature, one finds limited qualitative data on operational risk assessment in valuation papers. Usually this facet of valuation takes a secondary role to such areas as reserves, markets, and environmental considerations. When one comes to the question of operational risk assessment more often than not one finds the use of "rules-of-thumb", such as tons per man shift, average production, average seam height, etc., are used to forecast results on which banks and other financial institutions are required to make investment decisions. Because of the extremely competitive environment of the 1970's and 1980's numerous financial institutions approved loans without adequate "Due Diligence", and are currently paying a steep price in terms of non performing loans and charge offs. The Institute has lost a valued member by the death of Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. He bore the name of one who was largely instrumental in founding the Institute, and to whose support and guidance as active member, Vice-President, and President, the Institute owes. much. Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was the nephew of the late Eckley B. Coxe. He held a large interest in the coal estates owned and developed by his family, and he was thus naturally led to take a continuing interest in mining matters, and for years and up to the time of his death was a full member of the Institute. He died at his residence, Drifton, Pa., on Sept. 20 last, aged 44. He was a member of the class of '93 of the University of Pennsylvania,. of which great institution he was a devoted alumnus. His educational and charitable activities were numerous, but his chief life-work and interest was in archeological investigation and research in Egypt, carried on through the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania of which Museum he was President. The discoveries made by the various expeditions financed and directed by him, and the notable publications issued by his direction and at his expense, chronicling the results, are among the most important researches ever made of buried Egypt. Mr. Coxe was a member of the International Historical Society and of many educational and charitable organizations. By his will, among other bequests, he left $500,000 to the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania and $100,000 to the University, the income of the latter fund to be applied to increasing the salaries of the professors of the Institution. He also left $100,000 to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, of which he was a manager, and in addition thereto $10,000 of which the income is to be applied in providing Christmas presents for .the child patients, and in providing an annual dinner for the patients and attendants of the hospital. He bequeathed $50,000 to Leonard Hall, an associate mission of the Episcopal Church, at South Bethlehem, Pa., $25,000 to the Epileptic Hospital and Colony Farm (Philadelphia) ; $50,000 to the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Hospital and Infirmary for Nervous Diseases; $15,000 to the United Charities of Hazleton, Pa., the income to be applied to the salaries of nurses; and $25,000 to the Mining and Mechanical Institute of the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, founded by his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, and of which Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was an active trustee up to the time of his death. This Institute is known as one of the best preparatory schools for technical education in Pennsylvania, and is mainly devoted to extending an opportunity for education by day and night schools to the boys and young men of the Anthracite Region. Its principal is an alumnus of Lehigh University; it has an able local Board of Trustees, and an Advisory Board consisting of the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, the President of Lafayette College, and the President of Lehigh University, all three of which institutions have established prize scholarships in the institute. Mr. Coxe carne of a distinguished ancestry, the record of which is fully given in the biographical notice of his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, by Dr. R. W. Raymond, in Vol. XXV of the Transactions.`

The selection of the proper type of flotation machine involves the consideration of a wide variety of factors. Under any condition, all types of machines will promote some kind of separation. Obviously, the correct way of deciding which type of machine is best suited for a particular problem would be to set up all types of machines and test them out in a competitive manner, but the vast number of small concentrating plants are unable to make such complete and exhaustive tests. The experience of the authors of this paper indicates that if all the factors involved in any particular problem can be determined, and if all the flotation-machine characteristics are understood, some basis for selection could be arrived at other than actual comparison. This paper is presented to show how the process factors and machine characteristics have been combined at the mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. from studies of several types of flotation machines. At the two mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. in the Ducktown Basin of Tennessee, four distinct flotation separations are made on the complex sulphide ore. Three different concentrates are produced from the ore—in the order of their importance: iron concentrate, copper concentrate, and zinc concentrate. Four different types of flotation machines are used. The selection of these four machines, for the plant operation, was based upon the study and operating experience of the machine units shown in the following list: Fagergren machine; square cell, size 56 inches Fagergren machine; level type, size 56 inches Denver machine; conical disk impeller, size 24 inches Denver machine; receded disk impeller, size 24 inches Minerals Separation Sub-A, size 24 inches Munro-Pearse deep cell, pneumatic Southwestern air machine, Hunt principle To date the study of flotation machines has been confined almost entirely to the rougher circuits. The various cleaning operations, being relatively a much simpler matter, have not been investigated so thoroughly. Table I shows a typical analysis of the two ores as well as of the mineral content.

THIS paper presents briefly some of the principal results of 3 ½ months field work during the summer of 1938 in the Chichagof mining district, southeastern Alaska. The report is preliminary and presumably will be followed later by a more complete report to be published by the Geological Survey. The paper is concerned principally with the structural geology of a block of steeply dipping graywacke as revealed underground in the Hirst Chichagof and the Chichagoff mines, the two principal mines of the district. The two mines have produced about $16,000,000 worth of gold and silver. The attitude of the graywacke, which is locally cut by dikes and sills of aplite, is remarkably uniform and trends about N. 62º W. The average dip is about 67º SW. The graywacke is cut by large faults, the best known of which are the Hirst and the Chichagof, whose average trends are about N. 30ºW. and average dips about 75º SW. The faults at some places split into the bedding of the graywacke and at others are deflected from their normal trends for considerable distances along the bedding. The relative movements along the faults was northwest and up at about 30º for the south- west or hanging-wall sides. The ore bodies are elongate quartz lenses in the faults. Most of the quartz is mineralized but locally large quartz masses are too low grade to be mined. The emplacement of the ore bodies appears to have been structurally controlled in large part by the intersections of the faults with the bedding surfaces. Places where the faults split or are deflected appear to have been particularly favorable places for ore deposition. There has been some post-quartz movements along the faults but it is thought that such movements have not been extensive enough to greatly modify the original positions and shapes of the ore bodies.

The Austrian plants at Donawitz and Linz were the first to blow steel with high purity oxygen. The paper shows how the process was developed and gives a survey of the results achieved to date. Compared with open hearth steel of equal quality, the obvious advantages of oxygen steel are the low investment and conversion costs. The nitrogen content of oxygen steel is not higher than that of good open hearth steel. Rimmed and killed steel products made by the oxygen process are superior to rimmed and killed steel products made by the best open hearth process. TWO new steel plants using the principle of making steel with high purity oxygen went into operation in Austria, one at Linz (Vereinigte oster-reichische Stahlwerke) in November 1952 and the other at Donawitz (dsterreichisch-Alpine Montan-gesellschaft) in May 1953. An estimated 330,000 metric tons were produced by the two plants in 1953, the first year of operation. In 1954 production by Austrian plants- using the high purity oxygen approach will be raised to 450,000 metric tons. This will be in addition to facilities in Huckingen (Man-nesmann A. G., Düsseldorf, Germany), those planned and under construction at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Dominion Foundries and Steel, Ltd.), and elsewhere. It is expected that by 1955 a total capacity of one million tons of high purity oxygen steel will be available. At the close of the last century, because of increasing availability of scrap, open hearth steel production forged ahead at an ever increasing pace. This caused world steel production to rise faster than pig iron production and finally to overtake it. In 1911 65 million tons of steel were produced against 64 million tons of pig iron. World steel production was 209 million tons in 1951, while pig iron output was only 147 million tons. The 1951 breakdown for steel shows 118 million tons made from pig iron, while the balance, 91 million tons or 44 pct of the total tonnage of steel produced, was made from scrap. This increase in crude steel production on a basis of high scrap consumption led to the world market scrap shortage and soaring scrap prices. In the United States and other nations, production of converter steel has fallen far behind that of open hearth steel. The surplus of processing scrap, un-absorbable by converting mills and thus a welcome source for open hearth and electric melting shops in the past, together with regular scrap purchases, no longer can meet requirements of both open hearth and electric steel production in Europe. In addition, recent modification of the basic bessemer process, blowing with oxygenated blast, substantially raised the scrap capacity of these plants. Any further expansion of world steel production will necessitate utilization of self-containing processes in regard to scrap because of the shortage.

ONLY in recent years has any practical headway been made in the application of aerial photography to geological problems, and up to the present time its principal value to the geologist and mining engineer has been in "areal geology;" i. e., the study of formations as revealed at the surface. The object of this paper is to set forth briefly the principal advantages that may be derived from aerial photographic data in geological work and to serve in a measure as a guide to those who may be con-templating its use. Geophysical prospecting has for object the locating of mineral under the surface. Inasmuch as the geologist's chief complaint in life is a dual one-inability to see under the surface and inability to visualize comprehensively what he does see on top of the ground-geophysical prospecting coupled with aerial photography should do much to lessen his burdens. To what extent aerial photography can be made a useful adjunct to geophysical prospecting remains to be proved, but the inference drawn here is that it holds many alluring possibilities. To avoid disappointments, it should be stated at the outset that to the :geologist or mining engineer an aerial photograph or mosaic is only a tool, the effecient use of which he must set out to master. Upon his skill and ingenuity in applying it to particular problems will depend largely the value of the results that he will obtain. Under the most favorable conditions an aerial mosaic or even a few loose photographs, because of the exceptionally comprehensive oversight which they afford of field data, such as dips and strike observations at isolated outcrops, local indications of faulting, mineral and fossil finds, greatly facilitate study and correlation, save much tedious foot work, and may repay their cost many times. Even so, types of country may be found where the most, skillful use of the best of pictures will produce results so meager as to render the cost of aerial photography entirely unwarranted.

The mapping of slant-hole oil fields is complicated by the fact that relationships between wells are subject to variations in three dimensions and are not readily adaptable to representation on a plane surface. Formalized perspectives usually expand into an undecipherable maze of lines and peg models with the necessary supporting dividers serve only to awe the beholder with their perplexity. The usual compromise arrived at is a plotting of the projection of the courses of all of the wells in the field onto a horizontal plane (Fig. I). These complicated plots, when used in conjunction with the individual vertical projections of the wells, heretofore have been the most practical foundation for the study of general field problems. This method has many shortcomings, however, which arc not found in the recently developed straight-hole equivalent projec-tion method. The new method supplies a series of maps similar to the type now in common use in straight-hole fields. It is remarkably simple to use and supplies a ready check on clearances between wells. Perhaps the method can best be understood if the steps that led to its development are described. Common practice of oil-well surveyors is to supply the owner with a tabling of the survey and a plan view plotted against the true meridian. If a vertical projection is plotted, it is usually plotted separately and shows vertical depths against the projection of the stations along a section line joining the top and bottom of the hole on the plan view. A more practical method would be to plot the section line of the plan parallel to the abscissa of the vertical projection (Fig. 2). If this is done, any line parallel to the "base line1' will pass through the points on each projection that represent a single point in the hole. Another very useful graph, which the well surveyor could provide, would be plotting of vertical depths against measured depths. Fig. 3 illustrates the next step facilitated by this form of plotting. The lines designated "well A" represent the proposed course of a hole to be drilled. Superimposed on the drawing, in its proper relative position, is the plan view and a portion of the vertical projection of a present producer, well B." From an inspection of the plan view we arrive at the correct conclusion that the only indicated possibility of collision is at the point of crossing of the wells on the plan view. Referring to the vertical projection, note that the vertical depths of stations on B, in the vicinity of the crossing, are plotted on the same plane of projection as A. The clearance is the indicated distance between the two vertical sections measured along the parallel to the "base line," which passes through the point of intersection of the plan view. Repeat this process for the other wells crossing the proposed course of A on the plan view and you have a preliminary check of clearance for the proposed course. The sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definitive life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital writeoffs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral properly possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulphur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. The sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. To the Members It has been, and is the endeavor of the A. I. M. E. to serve each and every member. One of the means of letting the membership know what is going on in the mining; metallurgical and chemical fields, and by far the most important, has been our monthly Bulletin. To publish this costs money, and to partly defray the costs, it was decided to accept such advertising as could be secured. The A. I. M. E. is the only one of the American National engineering societies whose dues are as low as $10 per year, and it actually spends more upon the Bulletin and Transactions than the sun total it receives for clues. Hence the need of advertising revenues. We are planning even greater improvements for your Bulletin-improvements that will help you in your work. An iron blast furnace of 1000 tons daily capacity will produce a 100,000 cu. ft. per minute of blast-furnace gas. This contains a 25 per cent of carbon monoxide, and has a B.t.u. value of about 95. gas is used primarily for heating the stoves of the blast furnace, secondarily, under boilers, for steam production. Occasionally it is used in gas engines. The raw gas coming out of the furnace carries about 10 grains of dust per cubic foot of gas, under best operating conditions. With furnace "rolling" or slipping, this quantity may temporarily be gre increased. This dust would, of course, deposit on the checkers o: stoves, or plug the burners under the boilers; therefore the gas : be cleaned. Flow Sheet The first step in the cleaning operation, as shown by the flow s Fig. 1, is a dry dust catcher, of which there are several forms, partially cleaned gas next goes to a primary wet washer, where v sprays knock down most of the solid particles. If further cleani desired, the gas may then go to electrical precipitation. Again, the removed is collected in water. Dry dust catchers reduce the dust col from 10 grains to between 4 and 6 grains per cubic foot, and rec roughly half of the total flue dust in the gas. The wet washers rea most of the remaining dust, reducing the dust content to about 1/4 per cubic foot. Electrical precipitators, if used, further reduce the content to about 0.01 grain per cubic foot of gas. The flow sheet s the dust content of the gas at various steps in the treatment and als content of solids in the water. It should be noted that some plant less water on the primary wet washer than indicated, and that ofte solids content of the scrubber water will be 300 grains per gallon, or much higher. Reasons for Recovering Flue Dust.—There are two main incentive recovering flue dust from the scrubber water: (1) the value of the (2) stream or lake pollution, where such a reason applies.

An annual invitational address by an outstanding man in mining, geology, or geophysics who has contributed significantly to the progress of technology in these fields. IN 1954, the first year the award was conferred, Fred Searles, Jr., remarked, "The earlier years are the easiest." In this, the second year, it was easy to choose the outstanding mining engineer. Our conferee this year has been destined to mine. He comes from pioneer stock, and though a son of the American Revolution he is most proud that all four of his grandparents came to the Jordan River Valley of Utah the "first summer," which all Utahns will recognize as 1847. At the time of discovery of high-grade ore in Bingham, his grandfather, Archibald Gardner, had a crew of men getting out saw timber in the area. The first claim staked in Bingham Canyon was named the Jordan, and Bishop Gardner was the colocator of the claim as well as the man to record it. E. D. Gardner was born in West Jordan, Utah, in view of Little Cottonwood Canyon, the site of the Emma Mine. Park City in the Wasatch Mountains a few dozen miles to the east, and Tintic, not much further to the south, were developing their vast ore-bodies throughout his youth. As a boy he was near the present Midvale metallurgical area and could see the Lark and Bingham Canyon mine dumps and imagine the mining activities at Tooele, Ophir, and Mercur just over the nearby Oquirrh Range. He was 11 years old when the first car of copper ore was shipped from Bingham Canyon. It was not surprising that he attended the University of Utah and graduated with an engineer of mines degree. Five years with the Utah Apex in Bingham Canyon as chief engineer and assistant superintendent completed his training for the 44 years of unselfish and lightly rewarded service he was to give the mining industry as a Government engineer. All of us in mining are familiar with the great work he carried on and directed during the genera- tion he supervised the Southwest Experimental Station at Tucson. He has written scores of papers and books. His observations and experiments on drilling and blasting have led to the important improvements in this field during the past quarter century. Whereas those of us who consider ourselves widely informed about underground metal mining methods make hasty trips through a half dozen or dozen mines a year, our conferee has visited them all—not only the metal mines, but also coal and hundreds of nonmetallic mines, in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and overseas. His keen observations and analytical mind have resulted in an encyclopedic knowledge of mining and mines. His improvements in mining technology have been steady and predictable. His elucidation of mining problems to the many young engineers that have come under his guidance have made them grow strong and useful to his industry. When he chooses to stop, his influence will continue to expand and prosper because of the inspiration and dedication he instilled in so many of us. The profits from his ideas have been distributed throughout the mining industry. He has remained a technical man who felt that he could serve the mining industry best as a Government engineer. But he is the staunchest advocate of the belief that the public should gain from his work through private industry. This is not the first recognition E. D. Gardner has received. The Department of the Interior awarded him the coveted Medal for Distinguished Service in October 1949, and he received the Engineering & Mining Journal's Salute in March 1951. His friends who are presenting him the Daniel C. Jackling Award today know this great mining engineer simply as "Ed" Gardner.

This Paper contains a comprehensive survey of the known electron-hole radiative recombination mechanisms in the family of III-V compounds. Because of space limitations, the luminescence properties of each III- V compound are not reviewed separately and exhaustively. Instead, the different known types of recombination processes are discussed in turn and exemplified with reference to the III- V compound in which they were first recognized, or are best understood. Electron-hole recombinations usually occur predominantly at impurities or lattice defects either introduced de1iberately or inadvertently present, but radiative intrinsic interband electron-hole recombinations, which occur in perfect crystals, have been observed. Recombination processes which involve the participation of impurities or lattice defects ("extrinsic" recombinations) considered include transitions in which a) free carriers recombine with carriers trapped at impurities ("free to bound" transitions) , b) electrons bound at donor impurities recombine with holes trapped at acceptor impurities ("donor-acceptor pair" recombinations), C) excitons bound to charged or neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine radiatively (both "resonance" and "two-electron" "bound exci-ton" transitions have been observed), d) excitons bound to neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine non-radiatively (an example of an "Auger" recombination), and e) excitons bound to impurities with the same number of valence electrons as the host atom which they replace ("isoelectronic " traps) recombine radiatively. In addition, Auger recombination processes involving one or more free carriers have been observed. These extrinsic processes all involve impurities which are present as point defects. Some apparently well-authenticated examples of the recombination of excitons bound to complex impurity-lattice defect centers including nearest-neighbor donor-acceptor pairs are also discussed. Identificalions of the transitions involved in stimulated emission from the direct gap III-V compounds are briefly reviewed. Although the examples of these recombination mechanisms are selected from the III-IV compounds ia this review, these processes have quite general relevance in semiconducting crystalline solids; irrdeed most of them have also been identified in the 11- VI compounds and elernental semzconductors. THE development of crystal growth and purification techniques in recent years and concurrent advances in the understanding of physical processes in solids has accelerated the development of a wide variety of solid-state electronic devices of proven utility. These de- vices are generally used for switching or amplifying operations in electrical circuits. Most solid-state circuit elements are very photosensitive. This photo-sensitivity is generally undesirable and the single-crystal chip forming the active portion of the solid-state device is mounted in an opaque container. The photosensitivity is made use of in phototransis-tors and photodiodes, which are among the most sensitive detectors of electromagnetic radiation particularly in the near infrared.' In these devices, light is converted into electrical power. The solid-state lamp utilizes the inverse effect, namely the conversion of electrical power into light. There is an increasing tendency to use single-crystal diodes rather than the earlier electroluminescent cells in which the active material is present as a powder embedded in a suitable dielectric.' The radiation is emitted at a rate far in excess of the thermal equilibrium rate for the frequencies and temperatures involved; i.e., luminescence occurs. The development of practically efficient solid-state lamps is at an early stage compared with solid- state circuit elements or even photodetectors. Considerable progress has been made in recent years, however.3 The present review is devoted to a survey of the radiative recombination processes in the semiconducting compound crystalline solids formed from elements in groups I11 and V in the periodic table. These materials exhibit the full range of known recombination processes in solids. In fact many of these processes were discovered in 111-V semiconductors. Nonradiative recombination processes, which control the lutninescence efficiency, are also discussed. Luminescence is efficiently excited in semiconductors through processes which produce large excess concentrations of free electrons and holes in the energy bands of the crystal. Transitions induced by lattice defects or impurities usually predominate in the recombination process. By contrast, luminescence in the conventional fluorescent lamp is excited by optical absorption at the luminescent impurity center itself (the activator) and/or at a second type of impurity center (the sensitizer). This latter type of photoluminescence process, occurring in doped ionic crystals with wide band gaps, is outside the scope of this review.4 I) ENERGY BAND DESCRIPTION OF ELECTRON STATES IN CRYSTALS The energy band description of the energy states available to an electron in a crystal forms the basis of our understanding of the empirical division of crystalline solids into metals, semiconductors, and insulators in accordance with their electrical and optical properties.'
