CHINA is one of the large producers of the world's tin. About 95 per cent of the total Chinese production comes from the Kotchiu district in the southern part of the province of Yunnan. Yunnan occupies the southwestern part of China, bordering on Burma,. Siam and. French Indo-China. From the British port of Hong Kong,' small steamers sail southwest at about four-day intervals, reaching Haiphong in French Indo-China in two or three days. This, one of the principal ports in Indo-China, is a modern French city of some 50,000 population which, with its tropical surroundings, has much natural beauty. It is a few miles from the sea on the Red River, which has its source in China. Both at Haiphong and Hanoi, the capital of Indo-China, sixty-three miles north of Haiphong and also on' the Red River, there are foundries, shipyards, machine shops, cement and brick plants and various similar industries.

THE progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, deter- mining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(l)f and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected. KIRKLAND LAKE and Porcupine in 1931 accounted for more than $41,625,000 of Ontario's total gold production of $43,117,688. For the first time, the younger camp surpassed the older in gold output, producing $21,734,000 against $19,891,000 for Porcupine. Present output of both camps is increasing, and should pass the record figures of 1931 before the year is out. In May of this year, Porcupine mines milled 285,759 tons, with a bullion value of $1,810,009; the corresponding figures for Kirkland mines are 149,188 tons and $2,104,757. A much higher average value per ton for Kirkland ore, $14.10 against $6.33 average for Porcupine accounts for the difference. The two fields are about 100 miles apart by rail, and there are important differences in the character of the ores, which accounts largely for the difference in milling costs and in final tailing values, despite excellent metallurgical work in both the fields.

McLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out iii the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750°F. and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. WILLIAMS.-Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Rittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150°C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. BEST, New York, N. Y.-What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? WILLIAM A. WILLIAMs.-The fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

REPUBLIC Steel Corporation's iron-ore properties in the Adirondacks consist of mines, mills, and sintering plants in the Mineville and Port Henry area and at Lyon Mountain. This article will deal with the properties in the vicinity of Mineville and Port Henry. In 1938, when Republic leased the Mineville- Port Henry operations from the Witherbee Sherman Corp., these properties had just come through some hard depression years. As a result, the mine development program was far behind schedule; most of the equipment needed replacement; and above all, the entire system of mining had to be completely changed to reduce operating costs. The concentrator had been in operation for many years; the process was dry and dusty. Machinery and equipment were either badly worn or entirely obsolete. The sintering plant, also long in operation, was badly in need of repairs.

The Iron and Steel Committee of the American Institute, of mining and Metallurgical Engineers held a joint session with the American Foundrymen's Association during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1928, for the purpose of discussing blast-furnace operations and the character of pig iron and castings. Dr. Richard Moldenke presided. H.. H. Sweetser, who was named on the program as the presiding officer of the session, was unable to be present, but sent a letter in which he said: " The meeting we had here last year and the meeting held in Chicago last June showed a desire on the part of blast-furnace men and users of pig iron to get the facts regarding the influence on castings made from pig iron produced in blast furnaces under varying conditions of temperature, mixture and local furnace operations. It has been my hope that at this Round Table we might he able to formulate a series of tests that, would give us the desired information. "Several independent blast-furnace investigations have. been, and still are being, carried on in different sections of the country. The furnaces investigated include a southern furnace, a middle-west furnace, a western furnace and a Chicago district furnace. The results so far show distinct characteristics for each of the four furnaces. It is possible that a furnace in the eastern part of the United States would be different from all the others. "It is hoped that a plan of action can be worked out at your meeting today whereby the IT. S. Bureau of Mines will be able, to carry on more extensive work in connection with the research departments of the different iron and steel companies and the big consumers of pig iron. "No one group can get all of the, information but if the different investigations can be coordinated it will he possible for us to (Iran. conclusions regarding the effects of varying conditions in blast-furnace practice on the pig iron produced and the castings made there from." The Banner mining district is about 70 miles northeast of Tucson in the southern part of Gila County, Arizona. Production from the district, valued at about $26 million, is chiefly from copper-silver-lead zinc ores. The stratigraphic section consists of Precambrian conglomerates, quartzites, dolomites, and limestones, Cambrian quartzites; Devonian limestones; dolomites, and shales; Mississippian limestones; Pennsylvanian limestones and shales; and Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Deformation of these rocks presumably started near the end of the Cretaceous, and extended into the late Tertiary. The sedimentary rocks were folded, faulted, and intruded by fine grained diorite, quartz mica diorite, and dacite porphyry. At least four distinct stages of mineralization are recognized. In the first stage of contact metamorphism and the second stage of hydrothermal alteration, favorable zones were prepared for ore deposition. Metallization occurred in three of the mineralizing stages. Magnetite, pyrite, and hematite were deposited near the end of the second stage of hydrothermal alteration. The third stage included the main deposition of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and galena. In the fourth and final stage, minor amounts of sulfide minerals were deposited with a late anhydrite and quartz gangue. The ore deposits in the form of veins and veinlets, pipes, irregular massive replacements, and bedded replacements are localized by the extent and distribution of metamorphic and hydrothermal alteration, by the proximity to the intrusive contacts, and by the effects of structural development. Oxidized ores of copper, lead, and zinc constituted the principal production of the district prior to 1940, but, for the most part, supergene enrichment was of minor economic importance. The ore bodies of the district are in the mesothermal class of deposits, occurring as normal metasomatic replacement and vein types.

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.

ALTHOUGH Greater New York does not bear any resemblance to a great mining district, the mining operations that are being conducted in and about the city are both extensive and interesting in character. With regard to the extent, it may be mentioned that, at. present, there is more dynamite used in New York than in any mining district in the United States; that there are under construction about 38 miles of tunnel, and that 66 miles more are projected, most of which must be constructed in the near future ; that since 1902 at least 2,000,000 tons of earth has been removed in underground work, in addition to about 3,500,000 tons that has been removed in, open-cut in connection with tunnel-work, and many times this quantity that has been removed in excavating foundations for buildings not connected with tunnel-work; and that there are to-day probably more than 5,000 men engaged in mining-work in and about New York City. These undertakings include almost every operation connected with underground work, from exploration by means of trench and boring, to the sinking of large shafts and the driving of large tunnels through every kind of ground from hard rock to soft, semi-fluid silt and quicksand. It is proposed in this paper to give a general description of some of the methods and appliances used in the opening-up ,of a "mine" in a large city, and a brief description of some of the "mines" now being developed in New York, connecting as far as possible the methods described with the particular work for which they were designed, in order to give a general idea of the

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) I. INTRODUCTION. THE experiments herein. described were carried on in 1908-9 . by the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coal-mines, a subject which is engaging the attention. of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to. the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the. United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been on the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in, comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and. a very great increase in the amount of explosive used.. . This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle. West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six ,kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a "pay" of two weeks, while within the memory. of men still active, one keg (25 .lb.) would last two men for a " pay." So. great has . the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. (communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.

Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-All of these notices have been revised, and some of then have been more or less completely prepared, by me. To those which contain more particularly the expression of my personal feeling, my initials have been appended. The labor of preparing or editing these paragraphs has been in many respects both welcome and interesting, on the one hand, and sorrowful, on the other. In going through the list, I have repeatedly felt like one who, visiting the Morgue, suddenly comes upon the pale face of a dear friend, of whose death lie was not aware ; and, even when this fact was known to me, the work of recording it has brought upon me a flood of recollections, almost preventing the discharge of that official duty. The list for 1907 seems to me to he peculiarly sad, comprising, as it does, so many sudden deaths by violence or accident, so many veterans, removed too soon, and so many young men whose early departure impoverishes the future, even more than the present. Probably, this feeling on my part is largely due to the circumstance that the increased membership of the Institute necessarily in¬volves an increase of the annual death-list. Probably, also, it is connected with the circumstance that during the first years of the history of the Institute-say from 1871 to 1880-it was joined by men of all ages, and that the death-rate is consequently now above the average which would result from the normal annual addition, principally of young men. And finally, I must admit that, as one of the original members of the Institute, and practically connected with it for nearly thirty-seven years as Acting President, President or Secretary, I am peculiarly impressed and depressed by the successive deaths of those who were my associates in the years of its early struggles and triumphs. I do not wish to inflict upon my younger colleagues the melancholy reflections of an increasingly lonesome old man. In fact, my prevailing mood concerning the Institute is not at all melancholy, but triumphant and hopeful. If I may be permitted to preach at all, I would enforce, from the texts given below, a moral which many of them declare so forcibly as to preclude the necessity of expository enforcements-namely, the duty of every one of us, old or young, to give to his brethren, as he goes along, and without waiting for some future occasion for a comprehensive and monumental contribution to technical literature, the results of his observation and experience. The application of evolutionary operation is proposed for the cleaning of coal by the heavy media process. Analysis of the data given suggests some benefits that may not be immediately appreciated unless evolutionary operation is applied. For example, while it may seem obvious to increase specific gravity when the ash and sulfur content of the clean coal is lower than that allowed, evolutionary operation may show that an increase in feed rate or an increase in both feed rate and specific gravity would be a more profitable alternative. In addition, by using evolutionary operation, up-to-date knowledge of the effect of change of feed rate or specific gravity on yield and product quality is available. This information facilitates confidence about decisions made in regard to the day-to-day operation of these units. A number of other applications in the minerals industry are proposed. An application of evolutionary operation in a related field is also given where a large number of variables were required to be optimized.

During 1973, a 20,000 net ton (18 100 metric ton) formcoke test was carried out at Inland's 26.5-foot (8.08-meter) hearth diameter on NO. 5 Blast Furnace. The formcoke briquettes were produced from Elko1 coal by FMC at their pilot plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The briquettes were shipped to Inland in open railroad cars and most of them were placed in an outside storage field until a sufficient amount was available for the actual blast furnace test. The test consisted of three phases: an initial four-week base period; the actual 33-day formcoke test period; and a final three-week post-test base period. During the formcoke test period, the regular coke skip loads were gradually replaced with skips of formcoke until, after a three-week period, the replacement ratio reached 80%. The furnace operated smoothly and quality hot metal was produced. The burden remained permeable and it was possible to maintain wind rates 9 of over 100,000 scfm (47 Nm3/s) without significant blast pressure increases. Dusting from the formcoke was not a problem either in the stockhouse or in the top gas. The formcoke briquettes maintained their original shape and density as they descended through the furnace. When the 80 percent replacement level had been reached, the inwall temperatures became higher than normal (about 2000 ºF (1090 ºC)) and followed an unusual steady pattern. In addition, the top gas temperature became higher than normal, and the hot metal analyses and temperatures began to fluctuate unacceptably. In general, it is felt that the high inwall temperatures were a result of channeling of the hot furnace gases along the stack walls. This channeling appears to have been promoted by a change in distribution of the burden in the top of the furnace which, undoubtedly, was caused by the increased increments of formcoke. Since it was felt to be unsafe to operate the furnace for an extended period of time with the inwall temperatures at the high level, a decision was made to remove the formcoke from the furnace. When this was done, the inwall temperatures returned to normal. Once the inwall temperatures had returned to normal, the remaining 3,800 net tons (3450 metric tons) of formcoke were used in the furnace at a nominal 40% replacement level for five continuous days. The furnace operated smoothly during this period, and the results were representative of satisfactory furnace operation with partial replacement of regular coke with formcoke. The test was successful in proving that formcoke can replace up to about 50% of the regular coke in a large furnace operating at high wind rates. However, additional work will be required to develop acceptable charging practices for using higher levels of formcoke replacement.

THE numerous theories of hardening which have been advanced in recent years are all satisfactory in accounting for some of the phenomena observed in hardening metals, but none so far presented account for all of the facts observed. Some years ago one of the authors, R. S. Dean,' presented a theory to account for some of the properties accompanying work hardening. The present paper develops this theory further in the light of recent experimental work and extends it to other forms of hardening. Many of the ideas included have come from the writings and personally communicated thoughts of others. We have attempted to give proper credit in every case, but it is possible that we have not always done so. As an historical basis it is desirable here to review very briefly the hardening theories which have been current. The first comprehensive theory of work-hardening phenomena was due to Sir George Beilby.2 He contributed the idea that with cold work part of the structure of the metal was rendered amorphous and that-it was to this amorphous material that the cold-worked metal owed its difference in properties. According to Beilby's theory this amorphous material was a supercooled liquid and, therefore, had the characteristics of a vitreous material. That such a theory is not capable of explaining the property changes in metals has been repeatedly pointed out. This theory also allowed a slip to take place only once on a given plane, which, as has been pointed out by Jeffries and Archer13 is not consistent with the observed length of an, individual slip and the amount of elongation which can be obtained by wire drawing. The modifications, which have been proposed to this hypothesis to make it coincide with the experimental facts, have to a considerable extent robbed the theory of its clean-cut characteristics. Y.:-This subject is of great and increasing importance, as the exhaustion of the deposits of ore of ideal character compels the iron industry to turn more and more to those which are less desirable on account of physical structure as well as analysis. Thus there has come about the use of the Mesabi ores in this country and also of the Minette ores in Europe, which produce far greater percentages of flue dust than did the lumpy ores first used. It is a matter of common knowledge that the utilization of this flue dust, containing commonly 50 per. cent. or more of metallic iron, has been a problem very difficult and tedious of solution. The number and variety of the solutions now offered is a sufficient proof of this. . I have no intention of going into the merits or demerits of any of these processes as such, but there are certain considerations concerning the effect of their product on the operation and fuel economy of the blast furnace which I believe to be new and which I desire to bring out. There are two methods, so different as almost to be direct opposites of each other, whereby an ore may exercise an unfavorable effect on the economy of the blast furnace. The first of these is well known and results from the ore being refractory and highly resistant to the action of the reducing gases of the blast furnace. This results in its being incompletely reduced when it reaches the zone of fusion and in the reduction being finished by the direct action of carbon in the lower portion of the furnace. This is so well understood as to need little elaboration or comment. There is, however, another action which may be equally as fatal to the economy of the furnace as the foregoing, and as this point is, to the best of my knowledge, not generally appreciated, it is one upon which I desire to lay particular stress. This consists in the ore being, in a sense, too reducible.

INTRODUCTION DURING the summer of 1919, the late Dr. Henry M. Howe, then Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council, organized a committee to obtain a better insight into the behavior of carbon steels under the influence of various treatments by a proper control of the time and temperature factors. During part of 1919 and 1920, work in connection with this investigation was carried on at Dr: Howe's laboratory at Bedford Hills, N. Y. During 1921 there was an enforced hiatus in the work, occasioned by the illness which resulted in Dr. Howe's death in 1922. At that time one of the present authors compiled the results of the work which had been done and this was published in 1923.1 Following the publication of this work, it seemed desirable to carry on in the same manner an investigation of steel of C 0.75 per cent., which steel had not been as fully treated as had the other steels of C 0.34 and 0.52 per cent., used in the published work. Furthermore, certain unusual results have been obtained in the treatment of C 0.52 per cent. steel by quenching and drawing, and repetition of this part of the work seemed advisable. This has been done during the past year at the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri at Rolla, Mo., by a cooperative undertaking of the School and the Bureau of Mines, working in conjunction with the Committee on Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the National Research Council. The present paper is a report of the results obtained in this work.
