IT will perhaps be wise to define my terms in begin-ning to talk about my subject, especially so where the popular and commercial terminology are as con-fused as they are in the case of zinc. While our French friends know zinc by its true name, and we find Balzac, Daudet, and other literary celebrities using it correctly in their novels, it is quite the contrary in English, particularly here in America. The quotation of a definition for zinc recently appearing in one of our leading technical magazines, "zinc is the place where they wash the dishes," will emphasize the difference. Zinc suffered in the first place by becoming an article of commerce long after its alloys with copper were in common use under the name of brass. Then again, when the art of zinc coating iron and steel objects was commercialized, we called it galvanizing, which is really a meaningless term. The French and Germans use the obvious terms-zinguerie and verzinken-for the opera-tion. Since these two uses of zinc, brass making and galvanizing, have been by far the largest consumers of zinc, is it any wonder that the popular knowledge of zinc is as vague as it is? In fact, since the disappear-ance of the sheet of zinc along with the parlor stove, the zinc-lined bath tub and refrigerator, there has been little popular contact in this country with the undis-guised metal zinc. On the Continent, where zinc has been used for over a hundred years under its real name, particularly for roofing and building purposes, the situ-ation is quite different. It is quite refreshing to turn for a moment to the contrast offered by my friend, Dr. Merica's specialty, nickel. They put 2 or 3 per cent of it into steel, and we have nickel-steel, or a larger amount into an alloy, and we have nickel-silver. To be sure there is no silver there, but what need that matter, nickel is used in the alloy and is first in the name. They plate with nickel and call it nickel-plating, no galvanizing about that. And, finally, they take that noble coin which admits us daily to underground New York, composed of three parts of copper and one part nickel, and get away with nickel as its popular name.

THE materials containing copper which are refined in the United States, are, for the most part, the native, coppers of Lake Superior. Until quite recently but little pig copper was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphurous ores of New England and the South, and was generally sold to refineries not far from the ore furnaces. A small amount found its way into the market which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were looked on with suspicion, and were not sought for. All the grapes of pig copper are sold by the unit of copper contents, a great reduction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior Copper Company, and the works of C. G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works which smelt sulphurous ores and refine their pig; besides these there are a few small works where pig copper is refined only. Some of these purchase black copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but mostly that from Lake; Superior, for the purpose of getting it into such shapes that can be handled commercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire for electrical purposes. A number of such works are situated in the Naugatuek Valley and elsewhere in New England. The recent discovery, of valuable ores in Arizona makes it probable that within a few years the refining of copper in the United States will make great developments. Up to the time of the discovery of the mines on Lake Superior, only a very small quantity of native copper had ever been found, not sufficient to justify the erection of works for its special treatment. It had, besides, never been found in very Large masses, so that the discovery of great-blocks of it presented serious difficulties, not only in mining it,† but in bringing it into a merchantable condition. Quite early in the beginning of the present century, hoisting equipment underwent a radical change, when electric motors were applied to furnish the power in place of steam engines. Naturally, in the beginning, motors were not employed for large hoists: most of them were small single-drum hoists for which the motor ran continuously and the drum was clutched in for hoisting by various methods, and the down-going trips were made on the brake. In 1911 the Nordberg Manufacturing Co. of Milwaukee built for the first time a double-drum hoist powered with a first-motion direct-current motor (Fig. I). This hoist embodied many of the features that are used on larger hoists today. In the early development of motor-driven hoists a more or less natural mis- take was generally made, which only recently is being corrected. Because the electric motor has a higher speed than the steam engine, mining people in general accepted, without question, the use of small-diameter drums and the resultant finding of the rope in multiple layers, which was not at that time, the general practice on first-motion steam hoists. Small-diameter drums can usually be driven by a motor through a single reduction of gears even with relatively high motor speed, therefore the complete equipment could be obtained with a lower first cost.

FLUORSPAR is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluor-spar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and. on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available.

An important element of evaluating a materials- handling system by simulation lies in being able to examine the details of the proposed operation in a fashion which closely approximates real behavior. The added factor of flexibility permits including or deleting those parts of the problem which can be shown to be important or trivial. Used carefully, simulation can match manpower and equipment far more efficiently than conventional calculations. The same is true of interacting equipment systems. This efficiency results from being able to simulate the real fluctuations in a system by using empirical probability distributions compiled from existing operations. Simulation eliminates guessing as to efficiency, absenteeism, bunching, and the broad host of delays that influence productivity and substitutes operating data in place of the usual factors. In this respect, simulation improves detail and confidence in the reliability of engineering estimates.

Reconstruction of the British mining industry began shortly after nationalization in 1947 and continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the Middle East made many coal mines uneconomic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its ' Plan for Coal ' .1

The papers of Mr. W. J. Keep, read before this Institute, have called attention to the influence of aluminum in cast-iron and on iron and steel castings. The information in these papers is interesting and valuable, as showing the modifications which iron undergoes when dosed with sufficient aluminum to form a distinct alloy, the quantity of the alloying metal used being such that the amount remaining in the casting is sufficient to be readily discovered by analysis. The same is also true of the so-called aluminum-steel patented by R. A. Hadfield, where the proportions specified are such as to leave in the finished steel from one-twentieth to one-tenth of one per cent. of aluminum. Whether these alloys are of practical utility or not has thus far . not been proved by any extended tests on a large scale, and until such evidence is forthcoming it may be safely held, provisionally, that such a use of aluminum is of doubtful utility. But there is another function which this metal can perform that has been known for some time, and which has passed beyond the experimental stage, viz.: its beneficial effect in securing sound ingots. It appears to be a general property of all metals when in the fluid state and at a temperature considerably above their points of fusion, to contain gas, either dissolved from the air or frorn the furnace, or else self-evolved by internal reactions. Silver, perhaps, shows this power in the highest degree, and mercury and lead in the least; midway stands steel—the quantity of gas which it can hold in solution, or " occlusion " as it has been called, varies with its temperature, its composition, and its mode of manufacture. When the steel sets in the mould, a portion of this gas escapes, causing blow-holes, surface defects, boiling-over, wildness, and quite a long train of troubles, familiar to all practical steel-makers. IN this paper I propose to give a short and, I must confess, a rather incomplete description, as regards many details, of the process used in Chicago, Ill., for smelting the argentiferous ores of the far West, and shall confine myself in this description, principally, to the process used at the Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company's Works, known as the Balbach process, as all the other smelting works in that city follow the same method, with the exception of one, which has the Cordurié, process for the desilverization of argentiferous lead. In all, there are five silver smelting and refining works in and near the city of Chicago. The Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company's Works are situated at the little station of South Lynne, about seven miles south from Chicago. The plant at these works consists of one horizontal steam-engine, principally used for running the ore pulverizer, four reverberatory smelting-furnaces, connected by horizontal flues with a common chimney 85 feet high, three lead-softening furnaces, one so-called zinc or mixing furnace, one separating furnace or liquation hearth, one lead-refining furnace, three zinc distillation retorts, one English cupellation furnace, supplied with blast by a No. 3 Sturtevant blower, which is run by a small steam-engine having a vertical tubular boiler, and an assay office, in which there are two wind-furnaces of the ordinary construction, and also a small muffle furnace. The assay office is supplied with all the necessary apparatus and reagents for fire assaying. There are also a superintendent's office, various store-rooms for coke and charcoal, and for the preparation of fire-clay, etc. Recently a small slag hearth (Krummofen) with one tuyere, has been put up for the purpose of working over such slags as assay too high in silver and lead to be thrown away, of which there are large amounts. The principal ore worked while I was in the employ of the company was that of the well known Emma mine in Utah, and also small quantities of Colorado ore. Rock-mass fracturing was measured on oriented drill core and along scanlines in three mines extracting mineralized porphyry deposits. Fracture families identified in the core were consistent with those found along scanlines, but fracture frequency in the core was twice that measured along scanlines. The excess fractures, which occur within 45º of a right angle to the core, apparently are produced during drilling, which implies that fracture spacing in drill core is an ambiguous quantity dependent on the drilling procedures, on the orientation and cohesion of the planes of weakness, and on the actual fractures present in the rock mass.

IT has been observed that deformation in iron takes place by slip on {110} + {112} + {123} planes1,2 but in silicon ferrite with low deforma-tion temperatures or high silicon contents (exceeding 4 per cent) the authors have found that slip is confined wholly to {110} planes, at least with small amounts of deformation. The purpose of the present inves-tigation was to determine the effect of this alteration of slip mechanism on preferred orientations in cold-rolled and recrystallized strips. Inci-dental observations on the effect of the recrystallization temperature were also made. The numerous determinations of the texture of cold-rolled iron and steel have been in satisfactory agreement as to the principal features of the texture. (with the exception of a few conclusions that apparently have been based on insufficient data). The texture is chiefly one in which [110] directions of the grains lie along tile direction of rolling, with a deviation of a few degrees, and in which the (100) planes lie in the plane of the rolled sheet, with a deviation from this position chiefly about the rolling direc-tion as all axis 3-9. This deviation about the rolling direction as an axis has been measured by different observers and lies between about 45° and 50° or 60° for iron5,6,9 and is usually in the neighborhood of 50° for mild steel6,7,8. The range of this deviation is a function of the percentage of total reduction 8, 10. Post' reported that it decreases with increasing percentage reduction, but apparently he .studied only the surface material, which Gensamer and Mehl7 found to be somewhat differently oriented from the material in the inside of the sheet. McLachlan and Davey10 found that the deviation also decreases with increasing percentage of total reduction for the material in the interior of the sheet and is independent of the percentage of reduction per pass.

THE main producing oilfields in Peru are located in the department of Piura and province of Thumbes, adjoining Ecuador on the south and west. In the department of Puno, a small field known as the Pirin or Hauncané Area was exploited some years ago by Fred Brown and associates and considerable production obtained. As. shown by the statistical table of production, this area reached its maximum production about 1909; since 1915, operations have been suspended. During the past year, however, the Peruvian Corpn. has acquired some interests in this section. It is reported to have made a few shallow tests with the hope of obtaining sufficient production to supply fuel for its railway lines, which operate between Mollendo on the coast and Puno and Cuzco in the interior. Only partial success has accompanied these efforts; nevertheless, exploitation is being continued. The petroleum of this region contains a paraffin base with small amounts of asphalt. While the gasoline content is small, the kerosene content runs as high as 30 per cent., with the fuel element varying from 50 to 72 per cent. While it is known that the structural conditions of the Huancané area are somewhat complicated, it is believed that exploitation based on a careful interpretation of the geology of the region will eventually yield commercial production of at least modest proportions. In the main fields in Piura and Tumbes, drilling operations were somewhat more active during the first half of the year, than in 1922. The latter half of the year witnessed curtailment, owing to the abnormal situation in the petroleum industry at that time. For the same reason, no attempt was made to obtain the maximum production from existing .wells. Production was pinched down and exportation of crude was correspondingly reduced during the latter half of 1923. Nevertheless, the total production of the Peruvian fields is considerably in excess of that for 1922, as is also the production of the Negritos area alone.

Barite, or barytes as it is sometimes called, belongs to one of the lesser groups of nonmetallic minerals, of which 15 to 20 varieties are mined in California in amounts varying in value from a few hundred to almost half a million dollars annually. Commercial production of barite in California, according to the records of the State Mining Bureau (now Division of Mines), began in the year 1910 with shipments totaling 860 tons, valued at $5640 f.0.b. rail shipping point. With the exception of the years 1924 and 1925, when no shipments were made, the output has varied, reaching a maximum of 17,993 tons, worth $90,617, in 1927. The 1928 output was 13,406 tons, worth $55,888 f.0.b. rail shipping point, bringing the state total to the end of 1928 to 59,972 tons, valued at $313,930. Consumption of BaRitE in United States Crude barite sold or used by producers in the United States for the year 1927 amounted to 248,219 tons, valued at $1,594,423, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines.l In addition, there was imported, principally from Germany, a total of 70,274 tons, valued at $253,284. Manufactured products from these tonnages combined were distributed in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are at present available) as follows: ground barite, 57,658 tons; lithopone, 174,083 tons; barium chemicals (including carbonate, 4,960 tons; chloride, 3,541 tons; binoxide and sulfate or blanc Jixe combined, 13,354 tons). Missouri accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic crude barite, followed by Georgia and Tennessee, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia. THE lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnec-essary drilling.1 While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a tech-nique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. Economic equilibrium in petroleum refining is a dual concept. It embraces both the over-all balance between total storage and total demand for major products and the internal balance between the demands and inventories of the various products. The latter is the more complex of the two for it is concerned with proportionating the supplies of the several products stemming from the joint source to the demands for the individual products which are subject to wide variations. All the products are essentially nondurable goods, and they are used both by producers and consumers but in varying proportions. Motor fuel is very largely a consumer's good, while residual fuel oil is almost entirely a producer's good, the other products falling between these extremes. The peculiar-

The study of strain waves in rock over the past decade has, for the most part, been an investigation related, but not applied, to rock blasting; the design of rock blasts has proceeded on a basis that is independent of strain wave research. This duality is reflected in the paper by Dr. Clark.1 While the greater part of the paper is devoted to a discussion of spherical waves in elastic and visco-elastic media, it is in an entirely unrelated section, the section on scaling and cratering, that the practical approach to rock blasting is found. Work done by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as described in the paper by Duvall, Atchison, and Fogelson,2 has established a correlation between crater dimensions and the peak compressive strain in the rock. Strain wave measurements have thus been used to compare explosives but have not, as yet, been applied to the planning of a production round once an explosive has been selected. The optimum burden, for instance, is still determined either by experience, empirical formulae (e.g. that of Langefors 3), or a cratering experiment and the theory that has been developed around that proposed by Livingston.4 Even then there is some ambiguity in applying deductions from short, concentrated explosive charges to the long charges often used in practice (although Bauer 5 reports doing this with considerable success) and wave theory has until recently thrown no light on this problem, being confined, with only a few exceptions, to spherical charges. The hesitation in applying strain wave theory has probably been due to two questions that have not been answered satisfactorily: just how important is the strain wave in rock breakage, and if it is important, under what conditions will the wave break rock? This paper is an attempt to answer the first question, to avoid the second question by an admittedly oversimplified assumption, and then to investigate the implications of this assumption for blasting with long cylindrical charges.

RESEARCH, primarily, is finding out the truth. Research applied to engineering opens the door to new principles and processes, the application of. which benefits mankind in a material way. The engineer believes that investigation instituted with the primary view of making the results directly applicable to the industries is the highest type of research. Coal is essentially the basis of modern industrial civilization; therefore, any, considerable research pertaining to coal must link itself to the industry by, practical application of the results of the research. In other words, all investigational work connected in any way with coal leads to conclusions that permit a better understanding of the origin, nature of occurrence, composition, better and safer mining, more careful preparation, or greater efficiency in utilization of coal. Modern engineering research has been fostered essentially by universities and in the laboratories of institutions of learning. Coal problems that lend themselves to solution in the laboratories have been first attacked and are perhaps the farthest toward solution. For example, a great amount of research work has been carried out with the various phases of chemistry connected with coal. On the other hand, the equally important problems connected with methods of mining have received but little attention, primarily because their solution involves the continued use of a great and expensive laboratory, which is none other than the mine itself. As many of the problems already solved have had chemistry as their background, so many of the problems unsolved have physics as their background; there are also unsolved problems that deal in- coal economics. Even psychology must be called upon in future coal-mining research as a basis for solving those great problems that deal with human relationships. In general, considerable advance has been made in coal research dealing with chemistry, not so much progress has been made with problems having physics and engineering as a background, while there is a tremendous range of untouched problems that deal essentially with business and psychology.

THE object of this paper is to present a brief outline of the methods of geologic mapping employed in the Geological Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, and to show by means of a few typical examples the practical nature of the results obtained. The extremely complicated geological conditions early encountered in Butte mining led mine operators to realize the necessity of accurate detailed geologic mapping as an aid to successful development of the ore bodies. The organization of the Anaconda Geological Department was undertaken in 1900 by H. V. Winchell, who, in conjunction with D. W. Brunton, worked out the essential methods of procedure which are, in the main, followed at the present time. Since the year 1906 the geologic work has been under the direction of Reno H. Sales, and in some respects the scope of the work has been slightly enlarged. Au excellent article describing the general equipment of the geological department was presented by D. W. Brunton at the British Columbia meeting of the Institute in 1905.1 His idea, that data collected underground and recorded should be put to practical use and not remain a mere " inventory of the company's underground possessions," is the keynote to the success of applied geology in Butte. The geologic notes are taken as soon as possible after the ground is broken so that any mistake in the mining may be corrected at once, or any particularly advantageous procedure may be suggested before any useless work is done. Taking the notes underground is a comparatively simple matter, but a few necessary precautions may be pointed out. The essential to success is that the notes shall show exactly what geological facts are disclosed. The observer must discriminate carefully between important and unimportant exposures in making the record, especially as regards the relation between veins and stringers, between faults and minor slips, or between the characteristics of veins of different ages. A simple color scheme has been adopted for making this record: Red pencils are used to indicate.

As an example of nonmetallic mineral flotation, the separation of several pegmatite minerals will be discussed in considerable detail, from both the laboratory-testing and plant-operation standpoints. The pegmatites have been chosen to illustrate the practicality of the selective separations of the minerals in a complex nonmetallic ore and, in so doing, to set forth a summation of the flotation art and technology which is applicable in part to the beneficiation of several less complex nonmetallic ores. In addition, a brief summary of descriptions of other nonnietallic mineral flowsheets and separations is included. Some of the industrial minerals now being concentrated by froth flotation methods commercially, or in the laboratory, are listed in Table 1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS There are two classes of chemicals that are normally utilized as collectors in froth flotation separations of nonmetallic minerals. These are defined as anionic and cationic and are typified by the fatty acids and amines, respectively. The fatty acids are selective to those minerals that have a high concentration of positive surface charges, such as the various calcium minerals typified by calcite, phosphate rock, and fluorspar. The amines are selective to those minerals with a high concentration of negative surface charges, such as silica sand and silicates. It should be noted, however, that by using various inorganic chemicals, a new or synthetic surface can be placed on specific minerals which produces different characteristics, thereby reversing the flotation reagent required for separation. The polar end of the collector attaches to the mineral surface either by chemical or physical adsorption; the nonpolar unreactive end is oriented away from the mineral surface. The result is a hydrophobic coating at the mineral surface which causes attachment to air bubbles. It is this surface condition that permits the floating of minerals which normally sink in water. In a conventional cement plant, the drying and heating of the raw material takes place in the upper section of a cylindrical kiln where the heat exchange is poor. In a Lepol kiln this part of the process is carried out on a traveling grate where the heat exchange is efficient. The increase in fuel economy justifies the greater complexity of the installation.

ANY one of the mining engineers who spent three years under the benevolent and protective custody of the military forces of His Imperial Nipponese Majesty will admit that he has survived a most disagreeable experience, but our friends here in the States all demand that we tell them something about our thrilling adventure. Many of the younger men who were on Luzon in December 1941 joined up with the Army, either as civilian technical employees or through their reserve officer status. They served through the Bataan and Corregidor defense and had five months of thrills and hardship, if that is what constitutes adventure. Unfortunately, too many of them are not alive to tell their stories. But for most of us, our internment as alien civilians was just one long, drawn-out pain in the neck. Yes, we starved; yes, we contracted beriberi, dysentery, typhus, dengue, and for a while had no quinine to fight the ever-present malaria; but these things are not exciting, neither is the account of them interesting. Our contingent from Mindanao, 250 .in number including 25 mining men, went through one period of starvation at Davao. When the activity of the Allied fleet interfered with the importation of staple foodstuffs, and the natives stopped bringing fruit and vegetables into the market, the food situation became acute, and in December 1943, with stocks in sight and in prospect insufficient to provision their own soldiers, our custodians decided that we must be moved to Manila. The story of that ten-day voyage in an antiquated Jap freighter is too disgusting to tell, but hardly more adventurous than the account of a game of solitaire.
