THE United States Bureau of Mines established at Bruceton, Pa., in 1909, an experimental mine, for the purpose of testing the means of preventing and limiting mine explosions. During the last ten years numerous explosions have been caused to originate in .this mine for investigative purposes and the rate of propagation of the explosion wave, the pressure developed per unit of area by the explosions, and, the general results of the explosions have been carefully recorded and. studied. Means of preventing mine explosions or of limiting them to the areas in which they originate have been developed. A great deal of valuable information has been derived from the work in this mine and much more useful and valuable information will be obtained in. the future. The writer would plead, not for the opening of experimental mines in all the important coal-producing fields in the United States, but for the opening of demonstration mines, or mines in which experiments could be made with the various details of coal mining. The United States Department of Agriculture has established, in nearly every state, stations that undertake experimental work for the benefit of the agricultural interests. In addition, small demonstration plats are set aside, in suitable locations in the farming districts, where various crops are grown under scientific direction, so that the farmers in the neighborhood can note the results obtained and profit thereby. Something like this should be done for the coal-mining industry. If experimental or demonstration mines were established, methods of working adapted to local conditions could be worked out. Owing to competition in the same markets, small capitalization, or low profits, it may be an utter impossibility for any one company to try a new method of mining. Labor conditions may prevent the trial of a new method of working. It may be impossible or inadvisable to disturb existing working conditions for fear of causing trouble among the miners through real or fancied changes in the scale of wages.

AT THE beginning of September, the French eased their pressure against Germany and allowed the latter to, be granted an arrangement for its reparation payments in kind according to the Lubersac-Stinnes agreement. The whole arrangement as to the German reparations is, however, but temporary. The Greeks suffered a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Turks in Anatolia, which rapidly resulted in the expulsion of the Greeks from Asia Minor, the Turks occupying Smyrna about Sept. 10. A few days after entering Smyrna the Turks sacked the city and finally set it afire, creating one of the most terrible destructions in history. At the same time their advance on Constantinople, together with their demands on the Allies, brought them directly in, con-flict with the latter and Great. Britain prepared for a new war, with doubt as to the support of France, whose political interests in the Near East are as different as their economic interests with respect to ;Germany. The Turkish situation became thus a threat against the peace of Europe. A revolution in Greece, followed by the abdication of King Constantine and the return of Venizelos to a function in the Government was one of the conse-quences of the defeat in Asia Minor. Civil war continued in Ireland, with more or less -bloodshed. Economically there has been no change for the better in Europe. In Great Britain there, are no signs of an -important trade revival. In Germany and Austria things are worse. French, Italian and Spanish affairs continue in a bad way. In the United States business is represented as "booming," but many people are inquiring where is the boom? About the middle of September Congress passed the tariff and the soldier bonus bills. The President signed the former and vetoed the latter, with a strong message that won praise among people who understand condi-tions. Congress tried to pass the bill over the veto, but failed. The President signed the tariff bill, which became effective Sept. 21. A severe handicap was thus imposed on American economics.

MINE fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of some combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably-by C. L. Berrien,1 R.. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, and that is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made-to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working father away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases.

This paper deals with the results of a study of the application and development of mining machines for cutting out and removing dirt bands in bituminous coal beds. Face Preparation When one or more dirt bands1 occur in a seam of coal, the problem of elimination of impurities becomes manifest. The degree of completeness to which these impurities arc removed at the face has an important bearing upon labor costs, haulage costs and outside cleaning costs, and often the ash content of the product is markedly affected. Yet, because the present-day miller is paid for the number of tons he loads he often lacks interest in the quality of the coal. To insure a clean product, a system of penalties for dirty coal is enforced, but control of extraneous impurity content in the loaded coal is often inadequate and ineffectual when coal and banded impurity are shot as one. It seems only logical that to reduce the amount of impurities by proper face preparation before the men are permitted to load the coal is the most efficient method of preparation. Many mines with one or more bands of impurities in their seams are able to mine a desirable product with a comparatively small amount of surface preparation. In fact, three companies in West Virginia have recently changed their methods of fact* preparation, with most gratifying results. The first company (in the Kanawha field) after changing its cutting practice with the hope of relieving a sales problem, was rewarded by an approximate 3 per cent drop in ash in the product. Another company, operating in the same field, reduced its ash approximately 4 per cent by a change in cutting practice. The third company (in the Pocahontas field) found the wet washer inadequate in producing a marketable coal, and installed new cutting machines. Three cuts are now being made in each working place, and the results arc so satisfactory that the cleaning plant has been abandoned.

The Robinson mining district in east-central Nevada is itself a century of study in the changing economics of the mining business. It began as a boom and bust area. In the district today, just west of Ely, Nev., the hills are pockmarked with the tunnels and shafts sunk in a frantic scramble for gold and silver before the turn of the century. But as the economics of dwindling reserves, rising costs, and changing markets were stamping out the efforts of the gold and silver seekers, copper took over as the king of the Robinson district. Today, Kennecott Copper Corp. has four open pit mines in the district and is planning a fifth. From these mines, Kennecott produces nearly 40,000 tpy (tons per year) of copper. In its hundred years of history, the district has produced more than $1 billion in mineral values, a richer treasure than that from the more famed Comstock Lode of Virginia City, Nev. Prospectors had reported copper outcroppings in the Robinson district as early as 1872. But the first significant copper orebody was not discovered until 1901. In that year, Dave Bartley and Edwin Gray exposed the top of the porphyry orebody that would become the Ruth mine in a shaft at a depth of 120 ft. Subsequently, other larger orebodies were discovered nearby which have resulted in this area being one of the leading copper producers in the country for some 60 years. Following a period of development and exploration, the Ruth mine started production in 1915 and continued as a prosperous underground mining operation until 1948. The mining industry in Nevada experienced the same increasing cost of labor and supplies that all other mining areas had to contend with, and by 1948 the Ruth mine was no longer profitable. INDUSTRIAL specialization has rapidly created a demand for new and better alloys. A more thorough understanding of the requirements of specific industries and the discovery of processes by which it has been made possible to utilize certain metallic elements in larger quantities, together with greater purity in most virgin metals, has resulted in a great increase in the number and variety of alloys. This increase in the number of elements entering into non-ferrous alloy manufacture has increased the contamination in secondary metals, as received by the smelter. In order to successfully refine scrap of a much more complex nature it has been necessary for the smelter to install new equipment and to constantly search for new methods of refining as well as to improve the methods already in use. In some instances it is largely responsible for specialization in the secondary metal industry. It is usually necessary to remove the contaminating impurities in scrap or eliminate to a degree not objectionable, no matter how introduced. In order to know what metals or elements are of an objectionable nature, the smelter must make a study of the effect of single elements and combinations of elements on many of the physical and mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, color, hardness, casting soundness, etc. The smelter of secondary metals must be able to utilize scrap materials of all kinds, for, sooner or later, most fabricated metal parts and the waste products formed during the process of manufacture find their way to the smelter. In addition, the smelter, in contracting for salvaged material from the producer, gets some undesirable and unusual materials. The value of secondary metals and the importance of their recovery has increased in recent years and it is no longer sufficient to recover the base metal only, such as copper from copper-bearing material, but it inessential that other elements present be recovered and converted into useful form.

CARBONIFEROUS CLAYS FROM a geological standpoint, but scant attention has been paid to fire-clay beds. Only within the last few years have they been the subject of individual investigation, prior to this time having been considered only in their relation to coal seams. While the relative importance of coal and fire clay is still immeasurably in favor of coal, yet an industry as large as that of fire clay is entitled to a measure of attention. A discussion of the Carboniferous clays is practically a discussion of the clay beds in the Appalachian basin, since more than 90 per cent. of these clays mined are from this region. The clays are confined to the northern end of the basin, or the States of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia, ranking in importance about in the order named. The clay deposits of the Carboniferous period have been divided into two classes; those found in the Pottsville conglomerate series of rocks, and all those that are found in the formations above, for the reason that the clay beds above the Pottsville series all resemble each other in properties, composition and appearance, and all are distinctly different from the bed found in the Pottsville formation. The bed of clay found in the latter formation is unique in that flint clay is practically restricted to it. (A variety of flint clay is occasionally found in these upper deposits but this is in such small amounts as to be negligible.) Carboniferous clays occur between stratified rocks; sandstones, limestones, etc., in the same manner as coal veins. They are often accompanied by a coal vein although where the clay is of a workable thickness the coal is generally too thin to work. The clay beds are sometimes known by the name of the coal seam at which horizon they occur. Clay beds may be from a few inches up to 20 ft. in thickness. They may consist of all soft clay all flint or both soft and flint.

ARTHUR BRICE deSAULLES In the death of, Major A. B. deSaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major deSaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armide Longer deSaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction- as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when be became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company.. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. deSaulles survives him. In 1876, Major deSaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. UNDERGROUND fires have been common in the mines of the United Verde Copper Co. for the past 22 years. The first fire started in the 300 Hampton stope in the fall of 1894, following a cave in that orebody. The soft and highly pyritic nature of the ores is responsible for most of these fires. Since ore characteristics, methods of mining and ventilation, have an important influence on mine fires, they will be described in this paper. Orebodies The ores are mostly chalcopyrite except on the upper levels where considerable chalcocite, black oxides and other secondary minerals occur. The orebodies are in the form of lenses and vary in size. Some are small, while others are several hundred feet in length by a hundred or more feet in width. These orebodies extend, in some cases, from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine and usually at a steep angle of inclination. There are three different classes of ores, classified in accordance with the gangue rock. The copper in all cases, except as above specified, is in the form of chalcopyrite. The largest and most important of these reserves are in a pyrite gangue. Next in order of importance are the schist ores and lastly the quartz porphyries. The pyrite, locally termed iron ores, average from 30 to 42 per cent. sulphur. The schist and quartz, porphyries vary from 3 to 25 per cent. sulphur. Mining Methods All the orebodies were worked by the overhand square-set method of mining prior to 1908; since then the cut-and-fill, shrinkage and mill-hole systems have been largely employed. But 15 per cent. of the total tonnage now extracted is from timbered stopes. Most off this is from the upper levels where the ore is soft, heavy and more or less broken to the surface. Large reserves of these ores are being conserved for more efficient methods of mining.

It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. To save time, the original solution of the iron in nitric and sulphuric acids was evaporated to dryness and heated as before until

The Giesche Spas Akcyjna, in Polish Upper Silesia, produces zinc, lead and coal, together with many byproducts emanating from the zinc-lead ores. The development of the concern in the 230 years of its existence has been influenced not only by metallurgical improvements but also to an unusual extent by political and economic factors. The company was founded by George Giesche, who was born in 1653 and died in 1716, and who in 1704 received from Emperor Leopold I the exclusive privilege of mining and selling galmei1 in Silesia. His children, who retained the business, gave the name to the firm—George von Giesches Erben. After 1802 modifications in the Prussian mining and corporation laws limited the rights formerly enjoyed. The family concern became a corporation and expanded its activities, building smelters and opening new mines. The establishment of the present eastern boundary of Germany resulted in the transfer of nationality of a large part of the mines and surface plants to Poland, which, in turn, necessitated the formation of a Polish company, the Giesche Spólka Akcyjna. The first concentrators at the Bleischarley mine were built between 1854 and 1860 and owing to dual ownership were two in number. They were used only for the treatment of galena. In 1873 a concentrator was built for the treatment of sulfide ore preparatory to treatment in the Recke roasting plant, which was the first to have an acid plant for recovery of the sulfur gas. This concentrator was replaccd by a larger one in 1888, when the present orebody was opened up. At the same time, a mill was built for the treatment of the galmei. The concentration of the sulfide ore resulted in a much higher grade of feed for the zinc plants after the first troublesome steps of the roasting process had been worked out. Consequently, the oxide ore in its primitively concentrated state was no longer highly valued as a retort charge. and steps had to be taken to increase its zinc content.

IN its dual role of pig-iron smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus. Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary pur-pose. During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, in fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency in the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by com-bustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace. The net over-all result is a decrease in the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently more than offset in value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements. The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made in this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all economy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients. The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the effi-ciency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss can be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure; i.e., the "top pressure" under which the furnace is operated. It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result in concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity.

The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economically entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. It is not the intention of the writer to recommend coal as a fuel for automobiles and airplanes, but rather to point to these forms of transportation as being responsible in a very measurable degree for reducing the coal consumed by railroads. Petroleum products may still further reduce consumption of locomotive fuel through the extension of the use of Diesel-driven trains. Oil-burning steam-driven locomotivcs are replacing coal in some places, where railroads operating high-speed passenger trains are willing, temporarily at least, to pay a premium for the fuel that is low in ash and produces less smoke and practically no cinders. In the navy and ocean-going passenger ships, oil is so firmly established, and has such definite advantages over coal as formerly fired, in steaming radius, in ease of bunkering, cleanliness, and reduction in firing labor, that very outstanding developments in the handling and burning of coal will be rcquired in order to replace oil. For freighters on the Great Lakes, coal is the logical fuel, but there is great and immediate need of radical improvements in its use, else that market also may be lessened. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss in detail bituminous coal for either locomotive or marine use, but, rather, generation of power in stationary plants, consisting of electrical generating stations and that very large group of miscellaneous industrial plants, such as paper, rubber, textile, steel and other industries that use electrical, mechanical, and steam power, derived from either hydro or some form of fuel.

The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economically entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. It is not the intention of the writer to recommend coal as a fuel for automobiles and airplanes, but rather to point to these forms of transportation as being responsible in a very measurable degree for reducing the coal consumed by railroads. Petroleum products may still further reduce consumption of locomotive fuel through the extension of the use of Diesel-driven trains. THE mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are situated in the Morenci-Metcalf copper district in southeastern Arizona. This copper-bearing district covers a triangular mountainous area of about 3 square miles, rising abruptly from the gravel plateau of the surrounding country. In this area, an immense intrusion of porphyry has displaced, shattered, and engulfed the shales, limestones, and quartzites formerly bedded on the basal granite. Outcrops of oxide ore were discovered in 1873, and these surface ores were found to connect in depth with large bodies of high-grade oxide ores in the limestones and shales. The smelting of these ores in blast furnaces continued until about 1893, when the rapid exhaustion of the high-grade ore led to the discovery and exploitation of the low-grade sulphide ores in the adjoining porphyry. Methods of concentration were then devised and the low-grade ores finally rendered profitable. The Arizona Copper Co. and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., operating in the same district, were the pioneers in the successful development of the low-grade "porphyry" properties of to-day. The largest mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are the Humboldt and Clay at Morenci, and the Coronado, Metcalf, and King at Metcalf. These mines produce about 4,000 tons daily of concentrating ore containing from 2.5 to 2.8 per cent. copper. The topography of the country is very rugged and mining operations are conducted principally through adit levels. A few of the mines are opened by shafts, the deepest being 1,100 ft., in the Coronado mine. ORE OCCURRENCE The low-grade sulphide ore occurs as: (1) disseminated deposits in the main stock of quartz porphyry; (2) lode deposits in fault fissures in granite. The high-grade oxide ores were found as tabular deposits in limestone and shale close to contacts with porphyry. Low-grade oxide ore formed the outcrop of some-' the sulphide orebodies; the majority of the outcrops, however, were barren.

MEASUREMENTS of resistivity by methods involving the use of two current electrodes and two potential electrodes in general collinear with the current electrodes have been made extensively in geophysical investigations. In the method developed by Wenner and made use of by Gish and Rooney, and later in a modified form by Lee, the distance between the current electrodes is divided into three equal parts by the potential electrodes. In one of the methods developed by Schlumberger prospecting methods and by Koenigsberger, one current electrode is placed at considerable distance from the other and potential measurements are made in the immediate neighborhood of one of the current electrodes. The method is described as the single current electrode method, and the effect of the distant current electrode is considered negligible or a correction is made for the effect in the calculation of the resistivity. Usually the correction that is introduced is based on the calculated effect for measurements made in a homogeneous conducting material. The useful application of these methods in prospecting for minerals, of course, is in regions where nonhomogeneous conditions exist. In many of these conditions it is very doubtful whether the effect of the distant current electrode may be neglected, except for measurements in the immediate neighborhood of the "single" current electrode, and corrections based on homogeneity of the medium will necessarily be inadequate. In order to obtain a degree of symmetry that would preclude the necessity for corrections for the distant electrode and that would simplify interpretation, it appeared desirable to use a central current electrode and a set of distant end current electrodes symmetrically placed about the central electrode as shown in Fig. 1 and to provide by means of auxiliary resistances that the currents passing into the earth at the distant end electrodes should be equal. Circumstances did not permit the operation of this plan in complete detail but a degree of symmetry was obtained by using a central current electrode and two distant collinear end current electrodes and by taking measurements along a line passing through
