DURING the first few years of the new atomic age the Colorado Plateau was the focal point of uranium exploration. There was little incentive to expend time and effort in an area so far removed from the known deposits as the Pacific Northwest, and there were too few local prospectors to cover the vast territory involved. In 1949 the AEC established an exploration office in Spokane to evaluate the uranium potential of the northwestern states. Interesting occurrences were found in the Coeur d'Alene district in Idaho and in the Boulder Batholith of central Montana, but the AEC discontinued the Spokane office in 1952, and for the next two years prospecting in the area was negligible. In April 1954 John and James LeBret, prospecting on the Spokane Indian Reservation with an ultra violet lamp, located an occurrence of the fluorescent uranium mineral autunite. This discovery was not announced until the following September, after a lease had been granted by the Spokane tribe. Exploratory drilling carried on by the AEC throughout the winter verified the existence of a commercial orebody. This property, the Midnite mine, has since developed the largest known ore reserve in the district.

International developments affecting foreign in- vestments in 1960-61 were many, varying from region to region and differing with respect to various categories of investments. Total value of U.S. private investment abroad in 1960 was approximately $32.7 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over 1959. Production and distribution of mineral resources was, by a sizeable margin, the most important function of American capital working in foreign countries in 1960. Investment in mining or petroleum interests totaled approximately $14 billion, or 42% of all direct foreign investment. In- vestments by industry for 1960 were as follows: Petroleum-10.9 billions, Mining-3.0 billions, Manufacturing-11.2 billions, Utilities-2.5 billions, other-5.1 billions. American investors found Canada and Latin America to be most desirable in 1960 with the greatest percentage of American capital in all areas centered in the petroleum and mining industries. The areal breakdown of total American investments is as follows: Canada-$11.2 billions, Latin America-$8.4 billions, Western Europe-$6.6 billions, Middle East-$1.2 billions, Far East-$1.2 billions, Africa-$.9 billions, other areas-$3.2 billions.

In addition, your President, accompanied by President Jennings and Secretary Stoughton, in the year 1918, attended meetings of members in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minn., and Houghton, Mich. A dinner and meeting of the members in Pitts-burgh, Pa., was also attended, in company with the Secretary and your President also attended the meeting of Canadian Mining Institute in Montreal, in March, 1919.

In the course of some experiments conducted in the Metallographical Laboratory of Harvard University, some interesting facts were brought to light which appear to be worth recording in advance of a more elaborate and exhaustive paper which the authors hope to present to the Institute in the near future. Fig. 1 shows, under a magnification of 100 diameters, the microstructure of the cross-section of a steel bar 1/2-inch square, containing 0.52 per cent. carbon, heated to 1100 degrees C. and cooled slowly with the furnace. Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of the same steel, heated to the same temperature but cooled more rapidly in the air. Both samples were cut from the same bar and heated side by side in the furnace. When a temperature of 1100 degrees C. had been reached, one sample was taken out of the furnace and allowed to cool in the air, while the other was cooled with the furnace. The only difference, therefore, in the treatment of both samples will be found in their respective rate of cooling. This variation in the rate of cooling resulted, as shown

A detailed description is given of Bunker Hill's concentration process employed at the company's lead-zinc property in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. The plant is equipped to process 3000 tpd of Pb-Zn ore. The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to Aug. 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co. The first concentrator, a 100-tpd capacity plant, was built in 1886 near the Reed Tunnel in Wardner. The treatment consisted simply of crushing ore to 2 in. and then to 1/2 in. through rolls in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and trommel screen. The undersize was further sized in trommels to 10 mm and 3 mm. Oversize from the latter was treated in Hartz jigs. The 3 mm undersize was classified in crude hydraulic classifiers furnishing sands to sand jigs, the overflow being dewatered in a long V tank which supplied sands to a Cornish buddle and to Frue vanners. The concentrates were of excellent grade, old records showing assays of 69 pct lead and 29 oz. of silver per ton. Tailings were high inasmuch as the provision for treating the slimes was inadequate. Since the erection of the first mill, the Bunker Hill plant has gone through many changes and improvements. In succeeding years, the flowsheet was enlarged somewhat with Huntington and Chilean mills, vanners, tables, ball mills, and flotation cells being progressively added. In the transition period to the present day practice, the object was not only to improve the equipment for better mechanical performance, but to add new equipment whenever practicable so as to improve both grade and recovery of the product at a lower cost. For the modern plant and flow-sheet, see Figs. 1 and 2. The history of flotation at Bunker Hill dates back to 1913 when experimental work was done in a cell in which the pulp was circulated through a centrifugal pump set outside the cell and discharged against a baffle in the cell. The cell was built with a spitzkasten, and the quiet zone in the latter tended to let the froth break down before it got to the overflow weir. To remedy this situation, a belt drag with light metal flights was arranged for drawing off the froth over a ramp in each cell. Recovery of lead was not as high as present day practice, but was so much better than the vanners that the cells were multiplied gradually to eight cell units. The mill men called them mud hens. Flow between the cells was controlled by a weir, which determined the pulp level in each cell. These early machines were called Bunker Hill machines. The tailings were later treated in pneumatic scavenger flotation machines in a series, producing concentrates for retreatment in the Bunker Hill cleaners as well as the final tailings. This system of flotation served with minor changes until the Fahrenwald machine was developed at Bunker Hill during the period from 1921 to 1925. In 1925, the Fahrenwald flotation machine gradually replaced the Bunker Hill machine, although the Hearing pneumatic scavengers for retreatment of the tailings from the Fahrenwald machines were retained in the lead section until 1928. The use of the Hearing pneumatic machine for cleaning the rougher concentrates was begun in 1924. In 1941, plans were made for remodeling and modernizing the concentrator, the goal being a modern concentrator employing the latest equipment and milling practices. The old wooden building was to be replaced by a steel and concrete structure. Shortly after preliminary work got under way, the United States entered World War II and the demands for metals increased. To meet this requirement, the management decided to increase the capacity of the concentrator to 1800 tpd. This was accomplished in record time by the construction and operation of a sink-float plant. Installation of this plant was the first step in the general plan for modernization. In 1947 the concentrator (including the sink-float plant) was enlarged to handle 3000 tpd. Milling operations today are at the rate of 2300 tpd, five days per week. During 1959, 453,000 tons of ore was beneficiated. The Bunker Hill concentrator is in three sections: the crushing plant, a 3000-ton capacity storage bin, and the concentrator building. The crushing plant is of wood design with a gunnite coating on the exterior.

The application of Bingham's law to the behavior of drilling fluids in a rotational viscometer permits the expression of viscometric data in terms of plastic viscosity and yield value, the flow properties of a plastic fluid. A commercially available rotational viscometer is described, and when modified to a multispeed type viscometer, is shown to provide a simple and convenient instrument for the measurement of these properties both in the laboratory and in the field. The data obtained are shown to be useful in defining and understanding mud control problems relating to chemical treatment and to the hydro-dynamic behavior of muds. INTRODUCTION The highly complex drilling fluids which are required for deep drilling often give rise to new and unusual mud control problems. Rapid and economic solutions to these problems may require, on the one hand, better understanding of the changes which contaminants and chemical treating agents produce in the colloidal and inert solids of the mud, or, on the other hand, closer control of the hydrodynamic behavior of the mud. The latter objective obviously can be achieved only if a correct rheological analysis of the flow behavior of drilling muds is available and if this is accompanied by the appropriate rheological measurements. The purpose of this paper is to describe such measurements in the field, and to show how the resulting data can be of value in solving difficult mud control problems. It is now generally recognized that Bingham's law of plastic flow can be utilized in describing the hydrodynamic behavior of drilling fluids in the non-turbulent flow range. Beck, Nuss, and Dunn' have recently applied this law to the flow of mud in small pipes, and Rogers2 has reviewed the rather extensive literature on this subject. So far, however, the use of Bingham's law has been restricted to the analysis of mud flow in pipes or capillary tubes, and it has not been directly applied to the flow in rotational viscometers. In the work to be reprted, the Reiner-Riwlin3 equation for the flow of a plastic fluid in a rotational viscometer has been utilized to permit the expression of multispeed viscometric data in terms of plastic viscosity and yield value. the two absolute flow properties of a plastic fluid. With regard to the application of these measurements, the calculation of the relationship between pumping rate and pressure drop, both in the drill pipe and annular space, has long been a subject of interest. Beck, Nuss, and Dunn,' following Caldwell and Babbitt: base their calculations for non-turbulent flow on Buckingham's integration of Bingham's law for pipe flow and measurements of the plastic viscosity (rigidity in their terminology) and yield value. In the case of turbulent flow, Fanning's equation is employed, and the pressure drop is relatively insensitive to the flow properties of the mud. Since flow in the drill pipe is likely to be turbulent at usual circulation rates, the plastic flow properties will chiefly influence the pressure drop in the annular space. As pointed out by Beck,' the control of this component of the total pressure drop may be of special importance where lost circulation problems are encountered. Other hydrodynamic problems to which it should be possible to apply measurements of the plastic flow properties include predictions of the velocity distribution in non-turbulent flow and the critical velocity for transition to turbulence. Plastic viscosity and yield value. as abmlute flow propertie.;, will reflect the colloidal or surface-active behavior of the solids present in drilling fluids. Measurements of these properties should therefore find application in developing a better understanding of such behavior and in characterizing the type and condition of these solids. Garrison and ten Brink have utilized multispeed viscometric data in this manner. although their measurements were not expressed in terms of the absolute flow properties. In connection with the application of these measurements, it should be recognized that the presently used one-point viscosity measurements are relative in nature. The API Stormer 600-rpm measurement, for example. is a function of both plastic viscosity and yield value, as well as mud weight, and will often be misleading when its application to mud control problems is attempted. NOMENCLATURE, UNITS, AND DEFINITIONS In Fig. 1 an idealized plot is given of the flow variables involved in any viscometric measurement. It is seen that the flow behavior of plastic fluids is characterized by two constants — plastic viscosity, µp, and yield value, F. Other workers hate used the term rigidity for plastic viscosity or the term mobility for its reciprocal. The term plastic viscosity, however, emphasizes the close relation this property bears to the viscosity of a true fluid and is expressed in the familiar viscosity units of centipoises. The yield value is expressed in lbs/100 sq ft, the units adopted for gel strength measurements with the APT shearometer. THIS paper describes experiments in which eight test samples of gelatin dynamite were fired in three different types of apparatus and the quantity and composition of the gaseous products of detonation determined. The special dynamites were so prepared that the oxygen balance of the samples varied from -35.0 to +6.0 g. per 100 g. of explosive, including the wrapper. By means of this graded series of explosives, the relation between oxygen balance and gaseous products of detonation could be studied explicitly. The effect of varying oxygen balance on explosive strength has been discussed in another paper.1 The apparatus employed in the work described in the present paper included (1) the Bichel gage, a steel bomb of 15-1. volume; (2) the Crawshaw-Jones confined detonation apparatus, a steel cannon from which the explosive is fired into a pipe of 90-1. volume; and (3) the Hercules tank, an apparatus in which the explosive is confined in a quartz block which is placed in a steel tank of about 4500-1. volume. A full description of the apparatus is given later. VARIABLES AFFECTING COMPOSITION OF DETONATION PRODUCTS The character of the detonation products of commercial explosives is governed in part by the same factors that affect the combustion products from explosive mixtures of air with gases or vapors. In either case, combustible materials-namely, carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur-are present and combined variously. In an exploding gas mixture the combustibles are oxidized by oxygen in the admixed air, whereas with explosives the necessary oxygen is provided by oxygen-carrying materials in the explosive ingredients.

In addition to the localities in which tin-ores have been found in Mexico, mentioned in my paper on the a Tin-Deposits of Durango," presented to the Institute in March, 1895,* the following should be recorded. I am indebted to Captain Henry Freeman, of Durango, for the notes as to these occurrences. In the Sierra de la Candela, west of the Sierra de Sail Frailcisco and El Promontorio (the Llano de Guatimape intervening between the two ranges), cassiterite is found in veins and stream-beds. The veins are narrow, and the ores have the same characteristics as those of Potrillos. They were exploited by miners from Coneto in 1882-86, the more extensive work having been done on the northern side of the mountains. In the Sierra de las Palomas, on the western edge of the Otinapa, ranch, about 25 miles W.N.W. from the Diablo mine in the Cacaria district, there are several small veins, of which the ore, gangue and country-rock are similar to those of the Cerro de los Remedios, near the city of Durango. The latter are essentially the same as the Potrillos veins. In the Cerritos del Olote, in the Murphy grant, about 50 miles W.S.W. from Durango, there are old mines, now partially filled. The veins are narrow and poor; the ore is highly ferruginous; the country-rock is rhyolite, with some granite; immense quantities of chalcedonic rubbish are strewn along the course of the veins. In the Cerro Blanco, overlooking the pueblo of Mezquital, 48 miles south of Durango, tin-ore is mined by the natives.

INTRODUCTION The mine is situated in the middle of Norway 150 km north of the town Trondheim. The iron ore deposits were discovered in 1906 and have been continuously mined since. The first owner was A/S Nordiske Grubekompagni. In 1912 Fosdalens Bergverks-Aktieselskab was established; since World War II it has been a wholly state-owned company. The location is advantageous, with mining facilities, ore dressing plant and stockpile situated near the northern head of the Trondheimsf jord. The iron ore always occurs in Ordovician lavas and sediments, now altered to greenschists, keratophyres and limestone. The ore bearing zone is 150 km long. The deposits consist of two parallel linear ore bodies lying one above the other in the same stratigraphic horizon which dips 70' to the south. The upper body is 50-100 m high, the lower one 250 m high, while the distance between the two bodies in the East mine varies between 20 and 60 m. The ore width varies between 5 and 8 m. The ore bodies strike WSW and plunge between 10' and 15" in this direction. To date continuous ore has either been worked or opened up along a total strike length of 10 km. Until 1969 all ore was mined in the western part of the deposit called the Western mine. In the spring of 1969 production started in a new mine, the Eastern mine. The ore bodies in this new mine are geologically the same as in the old mine, but they have been displaced 700 m downwards along a major fault in the Fosdalen valley.

The Petroleum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has for the past three and a half years maintained a laboratory with the necessary personnel for conducting research on methods of increasing the recovery of oil. Some of the preliminary problems encountered in starting this work, with the data obtained, were discussed in A. I. M. E. Technical Publication No. 144, "Oil Recovery Investigations of the Petroleum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines," which was presented at the October meeting of the Institute at Tulsa, Okla., in 1928. Scope of Paper The following discussion gives some of the results of the more recent work at the Oil Recovery Laboratory. These experiments were conducted to obtain laboratory data pertaining to the relative merits or efficiencies of various pressure media in the recovery of oil from a sand reservoir. Two general types of experiments were conducted. In one the various pressure media were passed through an artificial body of sand partly saturated with oil at a constant input pressure; in the other the pressure media were passed through the body of sand partly saturated with oil at a constant volume rate. No attempt will be made to discuss the ramifications of economic problems which enter into the choice of a pressure medium. Apparatus and Materials The two 6-in. by 6-ft. flow tubes described in Technical Publication 144 were used in these experiments. They consist of 6-ft. sections of 6-in. casing with a blind flange at each end. There are three 1-in. well openings in each tube, spaced 2 ft. 4 in. apart, the end wells being

INTRODUCTION The Cyprus Pima Mine is located 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona and about fifty miles north of the Mexican border. The Cyprus Pima orebody was discovered in 1950. Feasibility studies were begun in 1952 employing underground development. Economic studies showed open pit operations to be feasible and stripping of overburden was begun in late 1955. The first ore was reached in October of 1956. A 3,000 tpd (tons per day) concentrator was completed and began operation January 1, 1957. From these beginnings, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has expanded into a plant processing approximately 54,000 to 56,000 tpd. Four expansions were required to bring the plant up to its present capacity. Each expansion incorporated what had been learned in previous operation of the plant. The first expansion was completed in August of 1963 doubling design capacity to 6,000 tpd. In reality, because of softer than average ore, capacity was closer to 8,000 tpd. Expansion II was completed in July 1966 bringing design capacity to 18,000 tpd. Expansion III followed immediately. Completed in the summer of 1967, this expansion increased the design capacity to 30,000 tpd. The actual dry tonnage of this portion of the operation in 1974 averaged 38,400 tpd, again, primarily as the result of treating softer than average ore. The latest expansion (Expansion IV), completed in December 1971 and utilizing a semi-autoge- nous grinding circuit, is located in a separate building (Mill II) approximately 200 yards southeast of the original mill (Mill I). Expansion IV was designed for 14,000 tpd, but after circuit modifications, averaged 16,500 tpd in 1974.

Though much has been written during the past several years about the Russian success in using hydraulic jets for coal mining, little or none of the published information, in so far as this writer has observed, has been of any use or practical application in this country. It is true, according to their published reports, that the Russians were pioneers in the use of high-pressure water jets in the mining of coal. They report the use of water jets for this purpose as early as 1936. However, according to a survey of foreign literature on the subject made by the U.S. Bureau of Mines1 a few years ago, water jets in the USSR, as well as in other nations including New Zealand, Poland and West Germany, were used principally to sluice the loosened coal after it had been previously drilled and blasted, rather than to cut or break it from the solid face. The interest of the Northern Pacific in the potential application of a high-pressure water jet to the actual extraction of coal, particularly in steeply dipping beds, originated in a visit by this author to the operations of the American Gilsonite Co. at Bonanza, Utah, in March 1958. After seeing the extraction, on a commercial basis, of gilsonite from a 22-ft wide vertical vein of this solid material with a 3/8-in. diam stream of water under approximately 2200 psi, it was felt that, with some modifications, water jets were the solution to the problem of economically mining the steeply dipping (i.e., steeper than 20º) coal beds in the State of Washington.

In recent years an important function of the mining engineer has been the appraisal of the value of mining-properties required by those planning consolidations of a number of' individual operations. In no field of productive industry have the economic results attainable by consolidation been more clearly shown than in the mining-regions of the United States. In many important mining-centers unification of ownership of the most valuable properties has already partially or completely been attained, and, in other districts, projected absorptions and consolidations await only favorable financial conditions for their consummation. The iron-ore districts of the Lake Superior region, the coal-mines of Colorado, of Wyoming and of Utah, the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania, the Connellsville coking-coal mines, and large areas of bituminous coal-land in Pennsylvania, in Ohio, in the Indian Territory and in other portions of the United States, are now largely controlled by a few corporations operating on a large scale, or by a number of corporations working in harmony because of an affiliation and interleaving of interests. The tact of keen financiers and the diplomacy of men of great administrative ability are the chief operative forces in conceiving and accomplishing such consolidations, but in formulating and maturing them, the services of the mining engineer are often required to supply the facts upon which they must be based. Much valuable scientific research has been performed in recent years on the subject of phase behavior of hydrocarbons.l-11 Engineers employed in petroleum production are interesting themselves in this work as well as in methods of applying the fundamental data available to the solution of their various problems. Recently a number of papers have been published in which applications of phase behavior have been made to specific cases pertaining to critical phenomena.l2-16 Little effort, however, has been made in the literature to show the relation between changes occurring in the critical region and the more common phase behavior, therefore it is believed that a presentation of the fundamentals of phase behavior with reference to hydrocarbons is timely. Study of phase behavior is not new. In the metallurgical field, knowledge of heterogeneous equilibria has advanced tremendously, particularly with reference to solid-solid and solid-liquid behavior. Much is known about vapor-liquid equilibria too, but few engineers are familiar with this subject. Definition of Terms In a discussion of this sort, a definition of terms used is most important. Such terms as "pressure," "temperature" and "volume" need little definition other than mention of the units in which they are considered. Pressure is expressed in pounds per square inch absolute. Temperature is usually expressed as degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Rankine. In considering thermodynamic and phase behavior, the use of the absolute, Rankine, scale is desirable. Volume is expressed as specific volume, such as cubic feet per pound. This will be recognized as the reciprocal of the specific weight. About three years ago, the writer presented a paper1 on the rate of heating and cooling of a 24-in. round ingot. The present paper deals with work done on larger ingots at the plant of the Allis Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis., in August, 1919. Sufficient data on ingots of all sizes were desired to enable one to calculate in advance the rate at which any ingot could be raised to a forging temperature without injury to the steel, determining also the temperature gradient between different sections of the ingot and the length of time necessary to heat to the center. This has now been experimentally determined for 24-in. and 45-in. ignots by the writer and for a 18-in. cube by E. F. Law.2 J. F. Harper has also made tests on heat-treating temperatures on 30-in, ingots; which data are included in this paper. No attempt is made here to work out a formula for the heat penetration of steel, for too many factors are involved concerning which we have not sufficient information, as for instance, the specific heat of steel up to 2300' F. It is hoped that eventually a set of formulas will be developed so that one may calculate maximum allowable temperature differences within an ingot for any particular kind of steel and the rate of absorption of heat and temperature gradient within the ingot for a definite temperature head. THIS paper describes experiments in which eight test samples of gelatin dynamite were fired in three different types of apparatus and the quantity and composition of the gaseous products of detonation determined. The special dynamites were so prepared that the oxygen balance of the samples varied from -35.0 to +6.0 g. per 100 g. of explosive, including the wrapper. By means of this graded series of explosives, the relation between oxygen balance and gaseous products of detonation could be studied explicitly. The effect of varying oxygen balance on explosive strength has-been discussed in another paper.1 The apparatus employed in the work described in the present paper included (1) the Bichel gage, a steel bomb of 15-1 volume; (2) the Crawshaw-Jones confined detonation apparatus, a steel cannon from which the explosive is fired into a pipe of 904 volume; and (3) the Hercules tank, an apparatus in which the explosive is confined in a quartz block which is placed in a steel tank of about 4500-1. volume. A full description of the apparatus is given later. VARIABLES AFFECTING COMPOSITION OF DETONATION PRODUCTS The character of the detonation products of commercial explosives is governed in part by the same factors that affect the combustion products from explosive mixtures of air with gases or vapors. In either case, combustible materials-namely, carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur-are present and combined variously. In an exploding gas mixture the combustibles are oxidized by oxygen in the admixed air, whereas with explosives the necessary oxygen is provided by oxygen-carrying materials in the explosive ingredients.

THE. extraordinary volume of work done in this period, and the multiplicity of subject matter, make a year-by-year historical account undesirable, if the account is not to be an assembly of unrelated fragments. We shall, instead, undertake to narrate the development in this period of each of the branches of the subject separately, hoping that their interrelations will be self-evident. There is a certain arbitrariness in the selection of subject matter in the following sections. The development of important engineering alloys-for example, high-speed steel-is disregarded, for it is the primary purpose of this account to relate the advances in ideas, the growth of the science of metals; other historical accounts relate these parallel advances. Nor are advances in techniques stressed, though occasionally the most important are noted; nor is the progress described in allied fields such as welding, cutting, etc.; for though these developments have very frequently made possible the advances herein related, they are far too numerous to recount in anything short of a ponderous volume. There is a more serious arbitrariness, however; it is not an easy matter to draw the boundaries of physical metallurgy, and some contiguous subjects have been omitted that perhaps should have been included, such as, for example, corrosion, gases in metals, the magnetic behavior of metals and alloys, and certain other fields in the physics of metals.
