FOR a long time propeller-type fans have been considered a very adequate means to move great quantities of air against small static pres-sures. They have been in use for this purpose in mines, as well as in other installations. For static pressures of over 2 or 3 in. of water, the centrifugal blower almost ruled the field until very recently. Some attempts were made to use a number of propellers in line. Such arrange-ments made it possible to obtain pressures higher than 2 in. of water, but they complicated the construction and increased its expense, and the efficiencies were not improved. The more recent development of propeller-type fans has been decidedly influenced by the intensive aerodynamic research in connection with aeronautical development, which has taught us, in particular, how to use airfoils properly. The characteristic that makes an airfoil so valuable is the fact that when it moves through the air a high force component, the "lift," acts on it vertical to the motion, while the "drag" in the direction of the flow is small. The ratio of lift to drag is approximately 20 to 1 at the angles at which the profile is used in practice. An element of the turning blade, the movement of which, relative to the air, is mainly in the direction of the plane of rotation, thus experiences only a small "drag" FIG. 1.-DIAGRAM OF FORCES ON WING SECTION. opposing its rotation, and for this reason a relatively small torque is required at the driving shaft. At the same time there is a strong force component at 90° to the plane of rotation. This force is parallel to the propeller axis in the direction opposite to that of the flow of air, with a correspondingly high pressure increase.

The main tin-producing regions of the world are known to be England, Australia and the Dutch East Indian possessions, chiefly Banca and Billiton. During recent years, the tin of the Malay Peninsula, exported from Penang and Singapore, has been coming prominently to the front. France, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Spain, South America, Russia and China still present insignificant figures. The conspicuous part which the Dutch possessions in the Indian Archipelago have taken in supplying the world with tin, is well known. Tin was discovered in Banca as early as 1710, and has been produced there ever since; but the supply has been most important since Banca came fully into the possession of Holland, in 1821. In Billiton and the adjoining island of Singkep, the existence of tin was known prior to 1822.* The Lingganese knew of its existence in the valley of Embalong, from creeks and streams in the neighborhood of Tima and Simper hills, on Billiton and also on Singkep island, but the prevailing superstition that tin-mining brought misfortune, influenced them to let this industry lie idle. The attempts of the Dutch government to test this question were lukewarm, perhaps by reason of the fear of reducing, through new discoveries, the price of Banca tin, and the island was abandoned in 1826, leaving only a military post. In 1850, Dr. Crookewit, a chemist and naturalist, was sent out to verify the rumors that tin existed in Billiton. His report was unfavorable; but in 1851 Mr. C. De Groot, a mining engineer, found tin readily, and the active work on Billiton dates from that time. Less than 600 tons were produced during the first ten years, and 3000 tons in the next decade. Consideration of the past work on the subject of the diffusion of chromium into iron suggested that additional information might be given by the use of X-ray spectroscopy in following the concentration changes through the diffusion zone. Grube and Fleischbeinl packed rods of electrolytic iron in a mixture of alumina and chromium. These specimens were heated in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen for varying lengths of time. After treatment the specimens were examined metallographically and showed the usual structure, consisting of a border of radially oriented columnar grains ending in a sharp boundary line. Reference is made to the fact that etching with certain reagents will attack only the material inside the border of columnar growth and also to the fact that polishing seems to develop a ridge at the position of the boundary between the etched and unetched areas. By chemical analysis of thin layers turned off on a precision lathe, the authors were able to obtain depth-concentration curves. These curves, reproduced in Fig. 1, show that in most cases a pronounced change of slope occurs, corresponding to the position of the boundary of the columnar grains. In a laler paper Grube extends his work to other systems which show the same characteristics.~ He concludes that the reason for the break in the curve is that a hindrance of diffusion occurs at the place where the regularly oriented grains of the diffusion zone meet the random grains of the interior portion, on the assumption that the diffusion velocity in one direction in a grain may be greater than in another direction, and that the grains in the diffusion zone orient themselves so as to give the maximum diffusion rate. By means of the C-Sic thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. Commercial Development of This Device Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, procedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; nevertheless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made, inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metallurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and financial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. In India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica-fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable rôle in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric strength, perfect flatness, ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has the same combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. The region about the south shore of Lake Superior is to geologists one of the most interesting districts of the United States, embracing as it does, in a limited area, old crystalline rocks, together with forms that are almost in their original condition of a beach sand and mud. In this region was first established the base of the geological column, the Azoic (" without life") System of Foster and Whitney, or the Archæan (" the beginning ") of Dana. Overlying this system are found the sandstones and limestones of the Paleozoic (" ancient life "), and their associated lava-flows (Algonkian ?). These systems possess a strong economic interest, owing to the stores of iron in the Azoic and of copper in the Paleozoic or Eozoic of this district, which forms one of the most important mining regions in America. The geology of this section is so difficult and complicated that, in its general discussion, perhaps no proposition can be stated concerning any portion of it to which exceptions cannot be taken. Indeed, out of the general discussion of different points comes in time the truth, and various geologists, even now, are working over this region in the endeavor to arrive at some consensus, or at least to determine upon what points they can agree, and upon what points difference of opinion will have to exist between them at present, until further evidence can be obtained. The writer will endeavor to give in a brief form that which appears to him at present to be the most correct statement of the geological structure of the region, admitting that from time to time, as more complete evidence shall be obtained, he expects to change his views in the future, as he has done in the past, if that evidence shall cause him to believe that he has been mistaken.

Recent successful applications of emulsion flotation suggested that a detailed study of some of the physicochemical aspects of the process was warranted. The objective of the current research was to provide general information on the electrokinetic properties of emulsion drops of the type commonly used in oxide mineral flotation. Combinations of the parafin oil Nujol and several long-chain reagents in water were studied with respect to the effect of pH on the surface and zeta potentials. It war concluded that for emulsion drops in the presence of a long-chain reagent but in the absence of any other electrolyte which is adsorbed at the oil-water interface, the surface potential will be some two to four times the value of the zeta potential. During the last decade there has been a revival of interest in the so-called agglomeration, or emulsion flotation (in this paper the term emulsion flotation will be used), process. In this flotation technique, a neutral hydrocarbon oil, together with longcnain reagents, usually of a polar-nonpolar structure, are added to the pulp to function as collectors for specific minerals. The combination of oil and longchain reagent is either emulsified prior to addition to the pulp, or in the pulp itself, and the resulting collector species is an oil-in-water emulsion of a neutral hydrocarbon oil emulsified by polar-nonpolar long-chain reagents. Emulsion flotation has been used successfully in the treatment of ores containing iron, manganese,' and titanium oxides. 2 Two other major and long established applications of emulsion flotation are the flotation of coal and Florida phosphate ores. In recent years, emulsion flotation has been particularly successful in the treatment of ores containing oxide minerals which slime readily and, consequently, are difficult to treat by conventional flotation processes. It is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investiga-tion1,2 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper. Importance of Gas-solid Contact One of the authors has pointed out in a previous report? that the operation of the blast-furnace process is entirely dependent on contact between the gas stream and the solid particles in the stock. The gas stream carries the necessary heat as well as the carbon monoxide molecules that do the work of rednction. In the parts of the furnace in which there is little or no contact between the gas stream and the solids there can be little work of reduction. Obviously, the part of the apparatus that is not doing the work for which it is intended is inefficient; the ideal condition is one in which all portions of the stock column are

An investigation, conducted by the author, was begun in September, 1889, by the United States Geological Survey, having for its object the study of the questions bearing upon the occurrence and manner of formation of the deposits of lead- and zinc-ores in Missouri and the adjoining States. The field-work was completed in December, 1891. During the first season the State Geological Survey of Missouri furnished an assistant, and in other ways co-operated in the research within the boundaries of that State. In order that the ore-deposits of the southwest might be compared with those of other sections of the Mississippi valley, an examination was made of the lead- and zinc-mining area of Wisconsin-Iowa, and of the argentiferous lead-mines of the region extending westward from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Indian Territory. In the discussion of the general geology, and in comparisons between the ore-deposits of the Mississippi valley and those of the Rocky Mountains, the writer has drawn largely from his personal experience, having been engaged for many years in professional work as a geologist and mining engineer in that region. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Scate Geologist of Missouri have kindly consented to the publication of the present paper. While giving the more important economic results, an endeavor has been made to set forth the unity of plan which appears in the formation of the deposits of lead and zinc of the Mississippi basin, and to show their relation to the argentiferous ores of the Rocky Mountains—that the ores of gold, silver, and mercury, and also of copper, antimony, zinc, and lead, have a universal common origin, irrespective of the geological formations in which they occur.

No one would maintain that all ore deposits or all deposits of useful minerals have been formed by the same processes. Generally they have originated by special processes of concentration but these may be of many different kinds. Some deposits have their origin in chemical or biochemical processes of concentration in rivers, lakes or seas, others, developed on land by, means of chemical reactions of surface waters on various forms of rocks. Certain insoluble substances remained behind; others were dissolved and precipitated in favorable places. This action -proceeded in the realm of the oxidizing surface waters or in the deeper zones to which the waters from the surface could find their way. Examples of the latter kind may be found in the extensive copper and vanadium deposits of some sedimentary beds or in the lead and zinc deposits of certain broad limestone strata. In these instances the evidence for any other mode of origin would seem to be very weak indeed.1 Nor does it seem possible to deny that circulating waters may form deposits of the more common metals along fissures after having dissolved many constituents from paths traversed. Another very large class has been formed by magnetic processes of concentration. The last 40 years have been a period of intense activity in. the investigation and description of a vast number of deposits; all modern methods have been employed and the result is an accumulation of data, difficult or impossible to master. It has been a period similar to that in petrography. The generalizations, the able deductions have lagged behind. Evidently several geologists have become weary of this "infinite detail" and a mistrust of the microscope seems to have. arisen. Single-phase aluminum containing 1 to 600ppm copper was studied in 7 to 26 pct HCl. The corrosion rate in the autocatalytic stage was resolved into a constant intrinsic component and an acdelerating autocatalytic component, and attention was focused on the part of this stage where the corrosion rate could be described by a simple empirical relation. Autocatalytic corrosion in this period was localized and its rate increased rapidly with copper content and with the strength and chlaride content of the acid. The effects of adding cupric ion to 16 pct HCI were functionally and quantitatively inconsistent with the autocatalytic rates observed. A theory of these rates was given based on the deposition in nzetallic contact with the aluminum of part of the copper introduced by corrosion. It has long been known in a general way that aluminum containing sufficient copper suffers in hydrochloric acid an autocatalytic acceleration of corrosion resulting from the introduction into the acid of copper ions and their reduction on the specimen as elemental copper, which provides cathodes of low hydrogen overvoltage.'-3 In a previous paper, this phenomenon was identified in single-phase high-purity material at copper levels as low as 20 ppm and an empirical equation describing autocatalytic corrosion rates in 16 and 20 pct HC1 was presented. In the present work the range of acid strength and chemistry studied was extended, a more accurate empirical equation for the autocatalytic rate was determined, and a theory of this rate was formulated. A major source of interest in this system is the intergranular corrosion, which is also strongly influenced by copper content,= and an objective of the present work on general corrosion was to provide a basis for studying the role of copper content in intergranular corrosion, which is experimentally much less accessible.

I. INTRODUCTION IT is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its -magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current Josses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that; indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use.

SOME months ago one of the authors was asked to write a paper on the heat treatment of steel castings that would be more comprehensive than other matter lie had published; this is an attempt to present in condensed form the results of experimental work and actual practice carried out for the most part in 1907, 1908; and 1909. It is not a laboratory research and the work done was carried out for the express purpose of putting in practice the processes discovered as fast as possible. Most of the tests are the result of commercial practice and not of bars annealed in our laboratory; most of the micrographs were made for our own records and not for publication. Certain of the micrographs, therefore, are not as clear as we may wish but they were good enough for our purpose at the time they were made. The tests and micrographs are selected from several thousands in our files. All of these micrographs are magnified 60 diameters. These experiments were conducted almost entirely on steel made in a 3-ton bottom-blown converter, and most of the steel illustrated analyzes about 0.05 in phosphorus and sulfur. Unfortunately, a certain number of specimens are shown of which we do not have the complete analysis, but in most cases in which the phosphorus and sulfur vary much from the figure just given that fact is noted. For purposes of comparison, we have included a certain number of micrographs and tests of steel made in the electric furnace, some of which were from specimens made in other shops and some in our own shop, and some tests of acid open-hearth and tropenas steel.

The PGT uranium assay probe is a borehole tool developed by Princeton Gamma-Tech over the last several years. It has the ability to do an in-situ assay of uranium in the presence of any amount of disequilibrium. It has some advantages over coring including cost, speed of analysis, and accuracy. In this paper we would like to give a brief description of the measurement and then show some sample logs from South Texas. Uranium exploration and development is carried out primarily by gamma logging since uranium daughters are prolific emitters of gamma rays. The conventional gross gamma tool for uranium logging is limited in value because of the inability of this tool to distinguish uranium from its daughters and other naturally occurring radioisotopes, such as potassium and thorium. This problem becomes severe in cases of disequilibrium. Disequilibrium, in a geological context, is defined as the condition when the gamma radiations from the daughter products are being emitted in a location different from that of the parent uranium. In the decay chain of uranium almost all the gamma radiation emitted in the entire chain comes from the daughter product, bismuth-214. Bismuth-214 is separated from uranium by several long-lived isotopes that are chemically active and have different physical properties, often resulting in shifts in the location of bismuth- 214 relative to the parent uranium. In the United States orebodies exhibiting disequilibrium are a common occurrence and the use of a gross gamma log to delineate uranium orebodies can lead to errors. At present the solution to the disequilibrium problem is extensive coring followed by chemical analyses of the cores. There are several drawbacks in using this technique. First is the high cost of coring, the second is the fact that no results are available for days, or typically, weeks after the drilling is done. Thus for development work, coring and drilling must be done on a grid basis and many additional holes are cored to ensure that the entire orebody is mapped. Another disadvantage to cores is the fact that a small volume is sampled, the volume of the core itself. This leads to problems in the mapping out of the orebody when the ore de- posit is not very homogeneous. The PGT probe described in this paper is a new solution to the disequilibrium problem. Basically, the probe measures radiations that come almost directly from uranium itself. The first daughter of uranium, which is protactinium-234 (Pa-234), is only separated from uranium by a 24-day half-life and no disequilibrium problems build up in such a short time. The PGT probe measures the intensity of a one MeV gamma line emitted by Pa-234 and, using this information, calculates the concentration of uranium. The PGT probe is 24" in diameter and 12 feet long. The probe contains a microprocessor which passes the information to a larger minicomputer in the truck. All data is analyzed on site, and the results from a high speed printer are presented to the geologist. Data is also available on 9- track IBM compatible tape for further processing. The PGT probe output is linear with uranium concentration. The only correction factor is for borehole size, and that only becomes important in boreholes bigger than seven inches in diameter. Dead time is compensated in the probe itself and no problems have been encountered in ore zones up to several percent UjO8. In addition to the uranium assay, a conventional gross gamma log is plotted alongside. Grade thicknesses for zones above cutoff are calculated as well as disequilibrium factors. COMPARISONS During its commercial operation PGT logged a series of 18 holes that had been cored and assayed. All of the holes in this series were logged in normal operation by regular field operators. The time to log each hole was generally under an hour, and in typical operation a PGT logging truck will do between 7 and 8 holes a day. The results of the comparison of the PGT and the core assays are presented in a series of figures showing plots of the PGT assay, core analysis and gross gamma measurements. The first three figures show individual holes with the gross gamma plotted along with the core and the PGT assays. All three logs were from holes on the reduced side of a rollfront deposit in South Texas. In Figure 1 we see the two wings of the roll- front at 143 ft and 150 ft separated by a barren zone. The wings are well defined both by the PGT assay and the core. There is approximately a one foot shift which can be attributed to drilling errors. Bentonite deposits are known to occur in Texas within the Jackson group of formations. This group represents the uppermost Eocene age sediments found in the coastal plain area of Texas. It outcrops across this area of the state in a narrow band of some 4 to 20 miles width. The outcrop pattern roughly parallels the present Gulf of Mexico shore line and is some 100 miles inland from the Texas shore, Fig 1. The principal bentonite deposits are found in the areas where this outcrop pattern cuts across the south-central Texas counties of Karnes, Gonzales, and Fayette. In these deposits, the better quality bentonite is found in the lower or bottom layers of the volcanic ash deposits in which they occur. Some of these better quality benton-ite~ develop very light colors upon firing and therefore justify their being classified as "white firing." The deposits in Karnes and Gonzales Counties apparently occur in commercial quantity, whereas the white firing strata so far uncovered in Fayette County have been too thin to be classified as yet as "commercial." A study of the ceramic properties of the weathered ash in Gonzales and Karnes Counties was reported in 1941.' Commercial development of the deposit in Gonzales County, 7 miles east of Gonzales, Texas. was started earlier by the Max B. Miller Co. for the purpose of marketing the material as a bleaching clay, and this operation has developed to very sizable proportions. In recent years, this company has offered a specially selected grade of the Gonzales material as a suspending agent in glaze slips. The white firing property especially adapts the material to use in white cover coat enamels. The strata in the deposit are practically horizontal and consist from top to bottom of approximately 2 ft of soil overburden, 10 ft of brown bentonite, 2 ft of coarse white bentonite, and 4 ft of waxy white bentonite overlying a he grained sandstone. The & being made in the quarry is approximately one-half mile in length. Only the bottom 4 ft of waxy bentonite is being recovered, the upper layers being stripped and wasted, Fig 2. It may appear somewhat surprising that the very bottom strata appears to have been the one most completely altered. To confirm this, samples from top to bottom of the various strata were studied microscopically by R. F. Shurtz. Professor of Ceramic Engineering, University of Texas. His interpretation is to the effect that the lower part of the seam was deposited at a much earlier date than the top, and that the lower part was chemically altered to a considerable extent before the upper part of the seam was laid down. The conclusion to be derived from these examinations may be stated briefly to he that the alteration in these strata or parts of strata has proceeded independently of the alteration in other parts of the strata during a considerable geological period. The presence of gypsum and iron stain throughout all of the strata indicates that alteration is now proceeding more or less uniformly throughout. It is contended that the alteration of the original ash to montmorillonite is not a result of the presently operating processes. A deposit which occurs approximately 7 miles southeast of Falls City and just south of the village of Casta-howa, has been explored and leased by J. R. Martin, of San Antonio. Mr. Martin has conducted mining and marketing operations in bentonite for a period of many years and asserts that the white firing strata found in this deposit occurs in commercial quantities. His pit, which is shown in Fig 3, exposes 2 ft of soil overburden, approximately 5 ft of white bentonite having coarse texture, and approximately 5 ft of waxy white bentonite which in turn overlies a brown sandy clay. Here, as in the Gonzales deposit, the most completely altered portion is found at the bottom of the seam, as per following report of microscopic examination by Mr. Shurtz. Sample No. 1: This sample was taken from the top stratum which is one foot thick. It is grayish in color and it contains visible fossilized plants. The color is probably the result of fine carbonaceous material in the rock. Under the microscope the sample is seen to consist of glass and feldspar; the amount of glass predominating. Both these substances are slightly altered. No montmorillonite or other clay mineral can be identified definitely; however, the products of the slight alteration mentioned are probably montmorillonite or mineral gel. Sample No. 2: This sample was taken from the stratum second from the top. This stratum is fourteen inches thick. The sample is light gray. It shows numerous veinlets of greenish translucent material ranging from one-eighth inches wide down to the limit of visibility with the unaided eye. A relatively new haulage system is described. Employed by the Delmant Fuel Co.. the "Full Dimension" system provides an uninterrupted flow of coal from a loader or continuous miner at the face to the main line transportation system. This system is said to provide a higher percentage of recovery as well as additional safety and production. Delmont Fuel Co. is employing a comparatively new system of transportation known as a Full Dimension system. Cne of these systems has been in operation for a year at the company's 10-B Mine as a part of a conventional section. A second was installed at the No. 10 mine in late 1960 to handle the production of a Colmol in a pillar section. SYSTEM COMPONENTS A Full Dimension system is a haulage system that provides an uninterrupted flow of coal from a loader or continuous miner at the face to the main line transportation system. The equipment required for this system consists of a series of interconnected chain conveyors that are mobile and articulated. They will retract or extend a sufficient distance for the development of a five-entry system; or, in the Colmol pillar section, it provides reach of 210 ft in all directions from the section belt. The components of this system are: l)One 160-ft chain line placed in tandem with the belt conveyor. It has a self-propelled drive, is 20 in. wide and 9 in. deep. Moving this conveyor requires the assistance of a loading machine or cutting machine. 2) One 40-ft piggyback that discharges along the entire length of the 160 ft chain conveyor. 3) A mobile bridge carrier, which is a self-propelled conveyor with four wheel steer and four wheel drive, twenty-eight feet long, it delivers coal to the receiving end of the piggyback. Axles steer individually making possible almost lateral movement. 4) Another 40-ft piggyback, duplicate of item 2 that delivers coal along the entire length of item 3 (mobile bridge carrier). 5) A second mobile bridge carrier, similar to the first, which deliver coal to the piggyback (item 4). 6) A third 40-ft piggyback, duplicate of items 2 and 4. This pig is attached to the loading machine and delivers its coal along the length of the second mobile bridge conveyor. Since the original preparation of this paper, the Delmot Fuel Co. has been able to eliminate the 160-ft chain conveyor. This was accomplished by connecting the outby piggyback directly to a loading machine with an extended boom. The loading machine loads directly onto the belt. This change has resulted in a substantial reduction in moving time and greatly increased flexability. A single trailing cable powers the entire string of equipment. It is attached to the side of the equipment in such a way as to keep it off the ground and afford maximum protection. The tramming rate of this equipment is 90 fpm. The conveyor capacity in a conventional section at Delmont's mines is 7.5 tpm and in the Colmol section is 5.5 tpm. This regulation is a simple function of conveyor speed. To visualize operation of this equipment, it would be well for me to touch briefly on local conditions in the Upper Freeport seam in which we mine. (Also, see the photographs of some of the equipment in use.) DELMONT'S TOPOGRAPHY The Delmont Fuel Co. operates two mines in this seam in Westmoreland County, Pa. The No. 10 mine, which was opened in about 1912, is now almost worked out. Depending on economics in the industry, it has a life of two to four years on a declining production basis. A year ago a new drift mine was opened which is called No. 10-B. It is about two miles from the cleaning plant and is connected thereto by an overland belt conveyor. The new mine is being developed at a rate calculated to take up the slack as the old mine plays out. The Upper Freeport seam averages 4.2 ft in thickness in the area of the Delmont mines. It carries 4 in. of boney coal at the top of the seam and a middle man of from 2 to 4 in. We mine just above a 1-in. slate parting which has 4 to 6 in. of highly laminated coal beneath it. This material normally makes a very firm bottom. The roof varies from dark shale to sand rock and 36-in. bolts are placed on 4-ft centers for roof support. All working places are driven 20 ft wide on development and 25 ft wide on retreat. Selection of mobile chain conveyor equipment when it became available, was a very natural move for Delmont Fuel to make, because chain conveyors and piggybacks had been in use at the company's mines for about 12 years. I. INTRODUCTION. THIS old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district,. as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the San Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco del Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as " quintos " (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quientos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. THIS account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and' especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects, namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle. This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.

BY THE term mechanical mining is meant that operation, or series of operations, that replace the hand methods of mining. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal & Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I have seen this installation and I wish all those interested in the question of electricity as a mine pumping agent could see it. It is not only a model for mine installation, but might well serve as a model for any electrically driven pumping plant. I think I am correct in saying that the pumps are the largest electrically operated centrifugal pumps in mine service in America. I talked with Mr. Rumsey in Duluth just before coming here, and he told me that the actual tests of the equipment as installed checked very closely with the shop tests; that the water delivered by the pumps was slightly in excess of the guarantee, something like 3 or 4 per cent., and that no troubles except of a very minor nature had been experienced with the installation from the start. One point which has been brought out by Mr. Rumsey, and by others who have looked into this question, is the marked saving which' can be made by the application of electricity to pumps, especially to the main sump pumps. The pumps are always located a long distance from the boiler plant and the losses in the steam mains are large. While many of the steam pumps are of a very high grade, yet the tests seemed to indicate that the steam consumption is extremely large. The reduction in operating cost of one small installation which I. have in mind pumping against a head of approximately 2,000 ft.-which by the way was a reciprocating pump-reduced the pumping cost to the neighborhood of one-fifth of the previous steam cost. . The high steam cost was probably due to leakage in the engine and the loss in transmission in the mine, the pumps being located almost half a, mile from the boiler plant.
