Some of the important changes that take lace in the structure of aluminum alloys are largely submicroscopic in character. This is especially true of the changes that accompany age-hardening and recrys-tallization. Although improved metal-lographic practices have been helpful in indicating some of these changes indirectly, results are limited by the resolving power of optical microscope lenses. The electron microscope, however, provides a new and important means for investigating the fine structure of metals in a range not possible heretofore. It is anticipated that this microscope will yield new and useful information to metallurgists when suitable techniques are developed to utilize its very high resolving power. Several unique methods have been devised to permit the examination of the structure of opaque samples by the electron microscope. These are all based 011 the principle of producing a very thin film that represents the prepared surface of the opaque metal sample, which can be examined in the transmission microscope; however, the available methods fall into three categories, depending on the manner in which the film is obtained. With the oxide-film method developed by Mah13-l7 a very thin surface layer of the metallographic sample is converted into oxide by a thermal, chcmical or anodic treatment. .After removal from the metal sample by one of the special techniques described by Evans,l9 this oxide film is examined in the electron microscope, and is found to portray the structure of the original metal surface. Films formed on aluminum,8,l7 nicke1,7 iron3,8,9 and a nickel-beryllium alloyl1 by heating; films formed on iron8,9 by chemical action; and films formed on aluminum3-'" by anodic oxidation, have been examined. The other two are more recent methods developed principally in this country; they consist in making the thin film in the form of a mold or replica of the surface contour of an etched sample. With the negative replica method the thin film is made directly on the sample; with the positive replica method it is made on a negative reproduction of the sample. With both methods, variations in the contour of the metal sample, caused mainly by etching, produce variations in the thickness of the surface replica. Because of the direct dependence of the amount of scattering of the illuminating electrons upon the thickness of the film penetrated, only the variations in thickness of the replica are responsible for tones in the electron image. Negative replicas are made by forming a thin film of some suitable material directly on the polished and etched metal sample, and derive their name from the fact that after removal from the sample they have the high and low points in the sample reversed, as shown in Fig. I. HORNBOGEN1 has recently shown that it is possible to measure the degree of segregation accompanying cellular precipitation in ferritic Fe-Zn alloys by measuring the lattice parameter of the ferrite phase within the cell. In extending this work to study a wider range of composition and to evaluate the free-energy change accompanying the growth of the cells, the lattice parameter and the boundary of the a! phase in Fe-Zn alloys were redetermined to check the earlier work of Schramm.2 This appeared to be necessary since the Fe-Zn diagram has been drastically revised since the work of Schramm. Stadelmaier and Bridgers3 have recently shown that, contrary to prior belief: the y iron field is closed and the a phase boundary extends to an a + T + L peritectic at 782°C where peritectic a contains 42 at, pet Zn. The phase T in equilibrium with the a solid solution has a composition near Fe3Zn10 and a cubic 081 type structure.' The alloys were prepared by two different methods. In the first method carbonyl iron powder (400 mesh, 99.8 pet pure) and high-purity zinc powder (200 mesh, 99.99 pet pure) were mixed in a ball mill and then pressed in a die at 40,000 psi pressure to make compacts with a diameter of 5/8 in. and a thickness of l/4 in. These were sealed in evacuated quartz capsules, gradually heated to 1100°C over a period of 1 week (3 days at 600°C) 3 days at 800°C, 1 day at (1100°C), and then quenched in iced brine. For the alloys containing 23.4 and 30.1 at. pet Zn, the final homogenization anneals were performed at 1000" and 850°C) respectively, to prevent melting. In the second method, alloys were prepared by saturating high-purity iron millings (0.001 in. thick, 99.9 pet pure) in zinc vapor. For each alloy the impregnation was conducted at a fixed vapor pressure of zinc and a fixed temperature between 750' and 800°C. When saturated, the millings were quenched in water. The compositions of the alloys prepared by both methods are shown in Table I. The lattice parameters of the ferritic solid solutions were determined by comparing the 26 values of their 310, peaks (using Co Ka) or of their 211 , peaks (using Cr Ka) with those of corresponding peaks for high-purity a iron. The 20 values were measured at room temperature with an X-ray dif-fractometer (G.E.-XRD5). THE existence of isothermal martensite without the presence of the athermal form thus far has been established only in a 6 pct Mn, 0.6 pct C steel' and a 23 pct Ni, 3.5 pct Mn-Fe alloy.' " Theoretical calculations, moreover, predict this phenomenon to be observable only within narrow composition limits.' In all other steels, it is generally considered that martensite inevitably forms upon cooling below the M, temperature. Even the possibility of isothermal martensite transformation has been questioned for the common steels, although Averbach and Cohen" showed that martensite formation does not stop when the cooling is arrested and that as much as 5 pct retained austenite may transform isothermally to martensite at room temperature. This note presents some observations made on a number of low alloy steels by dilatometric and inductive measurement of isothermal austenite transformation at various temperatures close to the Ms. In the dilatometer studies reported previously, austenitized specimens were immersed in a salt bath maintained at proper temperature and immediately inserted into the dilatometera8' already at thermal equilibrium with the bath. The dilation was read on a dial gage divided into 0.001 mm intervals. Induction measurements were made with a separate excitation source and a test coil, sealed together in a salt-tight case. The increase in the induced voltage caused by the transformation products was recorded at a paper speed of 4 mm per sec. The steels studied are listed in Table I. Specimens prepared from steels 1 and 2 were in the form of hollow cylinders 60 mm long, 10 mm ID, 14 to 16 mm OD, while specimens of steels 3 and 4 were in the form of notched-bar impact test specimens, DVM type. Specimens of steel 5 were in the form of strip, 7x0.3 mm. In the bainitic range, curves representing the amount of transformation vs log time have a single step appearance, as is shown by the curve of isothermal transformation at 320°C in Fig. 1.Y ransformation proceeds in accordance with the Austin-Rickett equationo P -----------= k t" 100-P where P is the percentage of transformed austenite, t is time, and k and n are constants. Near the M, temperature, however, complex curves having two steps are observed. As shown in a previous papera for steel 3 isothermally transformed at 245"C, such complex curves can be separated into two separate transformations or reactions each following the Austin-Rickett equation. The values of n in the equation for a number of such two-step transformations are listed in Table 11 for steel 1. Duval Corporation, the owners of the Sierrita, Esperanza, and Mineral Park copper operations in Arizona, first acquired the mineral rights to their Battle Mountain, Lander County, Nevada, property in 1962. Development of the mine commenced in mid - 1965, and the copper operation began at the end of 1968. The ore, a mixture of chalcocite and chalcopyrite, was milled and floated at a rate of 3, 175 mtpd (3,500 stpd). Because of low copper grade and price, the plant was shut down after about ten years of operation. Attention was then turned to an adjacent low-grade precious metal ore body which contained 2.74 g Au and 3.4 g Ag per mt (0.08 oz Au and 0.10 oz Ag) and minor amounts of copper. Test work revealed recovery by Carbon-In- Pulp treatment would amount to approximately 2.8 mt (90,000 oz) each of gold and silver per year. A rapid engineering and construction schedule resulted in the world's largest, as of late 1980, Carbon-In- Pulp plant being put on-stream in January 1979, with a capacity of 2.720 mtpd (3,000 stpd). Fortunately, the original crushing and grinding plant with all its infra structure was available, and the only modification needed was the addition of a gravity circuit to remove coarse free gold ahead of Carbon- In-Pulp treatment. One of the four primary 500 mm (20 in.) cyclone underflows in the primary ball mill circuit is directed to a secondary ball mill where its product is again cycloned. The cyclone underflow is screened at 3,360 microns (6 mesh) with the undersize being treated on two Pan American 1.07 m by 2. 14 m (42 in. by 84 in.) jigs. Hutch product is further concentrated on two Wilfley tables, a magnetic separator, and on a third Wilfley table where approximately 930 g (30 oz) of gold are recovered each day for amalgamation, retorting, and smelting. Returning to the grinding circuit, the final cyclone overflow is sent to the original plant tailings thickener to obtain proper pulp density for Carbon-In-Pulp treatment. Thickener underflow, at about 40% solids, is then conditioned with air and lime in a series of two 8.5 m by 9.75 m (28 ft by 32 ft) 15O cone bottom Pachucas for oxidation of pyrrhotite. The pulp is then split into two streams for cyanidation for 48 hours in two lines of eight Pachucas of the same size. Pulp is transferred from tank to tank by auxiliary air lifts. Cyanided pulp is then sent to a series of six C. I. P. mechanically agitated tanks with one hour retention in each tank. Originally these

THE Institute assembled in the Court-House, on Tuesday evening, May 22d, and was called to order by Vice-President E. B. Coxe. After announcement by the Local Committee of the programme for excursions, the Secretary read the following annual report of the Council The Council, in presenting to the Institute its annual report, has to record a most eventful year in the history of the Institute. Three meetings, as usual, have been held, two in Philadelphia and one in New York. At the Philadelphia meetings in June and October, there were present many distinguished foreign engineers, some of whom contributed communications to the Institute, and took part in its discussions. Sixty-seven papers have, in all, been presented to the Institute, which will be published in the fifth volume of Transactions. There has been an accession to the membership of 1 honorary member, 11 foreign members, and 162 members and associates; -8 have resigned, 6 have died, and 30 have been dropped from the roll, after due notification, for non-payment of dues. The membership now comprises 5 honorary members, 60 foreign members, and 644 members and associates, in all 699. As worthy of especial mention in the work of the year are the Discussions on Technical Education in connection with the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the report of the-International Committee appointed by the Institute to consider the nomenclature of iron and steel. The Discussions on Technical Education have been published in a separate volume, and comprise a valuable and suggestive collection of the views of practical engineers and educators. The report of the International Committee, composed of Messrs. Akerman, of Sweden; Bell, of England; Tunner, of Austria; Gruner, of France; Wedding, of Prussia; and Holley and Egleston, of the United States, has received the careful attention of engineers and metallurgists of all countries, and has met . with very general acceptance. Of the work of the Centennial Committee in Philadelphia the members are generally familiar, from personal experience, and from the detailed report of the committee at the last meeting of the Institute. But the record of the service rendered by this committee would he incomplete without mention of the numerous letters of thanks and formal expressions of obligations received by the Institute from individuals, societies, and governments abroad. The wise and generous spirit in which the work of the committee was planned, and the laborious and self-sacrificing manner in which it was carried out, call for emphatic expressions of thanks from the Institute. The gifts of Centennial exhibits to the Institute, largely as testimonials for services rendered, has necessitated the appointment of a Museum Committee for

INTRODUCTION The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is affiliated with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) but operates with a separate staff and funding. It supplements the activities of the Bank by providing, to private business, equity and loans without government guarantees in whatever form and combination most suited to the project. IFC frequently complements the Bank's activities by utilizing, for example, the Bank's public sector infrastructure activities to support IFC's private sector projects. In the case of local financial institutions especially, IFC collaborates with the Bank by providing technical and financial assistance. IFC is the world's largest multilateral organization which finances private sector business in developing countries. IFC's fundamental purpose is to promote the economic development of its developing member countries through the support of the private sector. Of the 124 member countries of IFC, more than 100 are developing countries. Since it began operations in 1956, IFC has been associated with more than 2,000 companies and financial institutions in supporting over 700 business ventures in more than 80 countries. The total capital costs of these projects exceeds $26,000 million. In the 1984 fiscal year, IFC approved 62 projects in 37 countries with a total project cost of $2,473 million. IFC will make investments only if sufficient capital cannot be obtained on reasonable terms from other sources. IFC often serves as the catalyst for a project by encouraging other investors--from inside and outside the host country--to make their own equity investments along with the local sponsor for a particular project. IFC'S SPECIAL ROLE The significance of IFC's role extends beyond just its financing and technical assistance: IFC's capability to raise investor confidence in a project and to help all the participants to arrive at mutually satisfactory investment arrangements is its distinctive character. Direct Investments IFC invests in all types of projects both large and small. Heavy industrial ventures not only supply essential materials and equipment for other domestic enterprises, but also earn foreign exchange through exports. In recent years, increased emphasis has been placed on agriculture and agribusiness products, aquaculture, food and food processing, and other renewable and nonrenewable resources such as metals and energy. [ ] An overall objective of IFC is to assist entrepreneurs and others in the private sector raise the needed capital for business ventures. IFC does not compete with, nor seek to replace private initiative and capital. Rather, IFC helps to raise funds in order to undertake projects that would otherwise be held back by the lack of adequate funding. IFC can do this in several ways: IFC can invest in equity and make loans for its own account. THE expression "unit process " comes up with increasing frequency in discussions among metallurgists and mineral engineers, especially among those concerned with training the next generation. The unit process approach characterizes a significant advance along the road from metallurgy as an empirical art to metallurgy as a branch of engineering. The purposes of this paper are to define and list the unit processes in specific terms, to indicate the scientific and engineering principles basic to all the unit processes, and finally to show how these ideas have been applied to a reorganization of instruction in chemical metallurgy. UNIT OPERATIONS AND UNIT PROCESSES Metals are extracted from ores and other raw materials by stepwise procedures. In general, each metallic element is extracted by a different procedure. For many of the metals there is a choice of several flowsheets. However, the procedures all have steps in common. In fact, the many different flowsheets are all made up of a relatively small number of steps which are combined in different groups and sequences. For example, crushing, screening, roasting, sintering, melting, and gaseous reduction are steps which each appear in the flowsheets for extracting the majority of the metals. The individual steps or flowsheet units can be designated as unit operations or unit processes. These terms are well established in the field of chemical engineering, as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' definition of chemical engineering shows: " Chemical engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the development and application of manufacturing processes in which chemical or certain physical changes of materials are involved. These processes may usually be resolved into a coordinated series of unit physical operations and unit chemical processes. The work of the chemical engineer is concerned primarily with the design, construction, and operation of equipment and plants in which these unit operations and processes are applied. Chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the underlying sciences of chemical engineering, and economics its guide in practice."1a In this definition, the distinction between unit operations and unit processes is that the unit operations are physical while the unit processes are chemical. Table I gives a list of the principal unit operations and unit processes of chemical engineering, taken from Shreve. lb Table 2 lists the principal unit operations and unit processes used for metal extraction. The division between unit operations and unit processes is similar to the chemical engineers' distinction and also corresponds approximately to the division of labor between mineral dressing and chemical metallurgy which has been customary in the past. IT is only in recent years that substantial progress has been made in developing a physico-chemical picture of the solid state. The molecular concept, so useful in dealing with gases, was naturally carried over to the field of crystalline solids; it has resulted in the firm implanting of erroneous concepts that only now are being eradicated successfully. Two simply written and effective books on the subject are Crystal Chemistry by Stillwell1 and An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry by Evans.' A more complete treatment of the subject is available in a book by Wells.' The monograph by Hückel4 also touches on a subject most easily perceived by reference to the brief introduction by Bragg,5 that master of the field. These texts make it clear that while some solids are built of molecules, many are built of ions, others of atoms connected in the form of giant molecules, and still others of cations and electrons. The various lattices in which these entities are systematically arranged, the joint use of several of these entities, and the transitional character of some of the bonds make for the great variety of crystalline solids. The purpose of this paper is to point out a most important corollary of present views on the structure of solids. In this connection the classification of solids in Table I is helpful. Atomic crystals are those formed by the noble gases, e.g., helium and argon. They are soft, sublime at very low temperature, of very low specific gravities, and not encountered in ores. Molecular crystals are uncommon among inorganic materials, common among organic materials. Typical examples from both inorganic and organic fields are sulphur, iodine, naphthalene, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. These crystals are soft and have low specific gravities; where the molecules are small, the sublimation temperature is low. Filament and sheet crystals are rare. They are typified by elemental selenium and elemental arsenic, respectively. Graphite and molybdenite come near being sheet crystals. These crystals are soft in some directions, tough in others, sublime at various temperatures. Diamantine crystals, typified by diamond, are very few in number, stable at high temperatures, and extremely hard. Ionic crystals are common. Most salts, acids, and alkalies belong in the two classes of ionic crystals; examples are rock salt, fluorite, calcite, and angle-site. The salts, acids, and alkalies that do not belong in these classes are more properly regarded as transitional between ionic crystals, framework crystals, and diamantine crystals, e.g., ice and quartz. Fiber crystals are relatively uncommon mineral-ogically speaking, but common in the fields of living processes. Examples are asbestos, silk, cellulose, and wool. An Appreciation of Dr. Douglas by Dr. ALBERT R. LEDOUX The Bulletins of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the program of the International Engineering Congress, held last September at San Francisco, called attention to an important feature in the pro¬ceedings of the Congress; viz., the public presentation to Dr. James Douglas of the John Fritz Medal, for notable achievements in mining, metallurgy, education. and industrial welfare. Dr. Douglas' health, unfortunately, did not permit of his taking the journey to California. While he had been willing that the bestowal of the medal should be a public ceremony, his natural modesty made him shrink somewhat from what he considered something of an ordeal, and he begged those who were to take part in it to use restraint in anything which they might have to say as to his work and attainments. It was, therefore, with some considerable satisfaction on his side that he learned that the medal would be given him without a public, ceremony in New York, or elsewhere. . On Dec. 5, 1915, the writer of this had the pleasure of handing him the medal, certificate, and official letters of transmittal, at his home at Spuyten Duyvil, where lie was surrounded by his children and grandchildren, with one or two of his most intimate friends. He begged the writer to return his thanks to the Committee of Award; and again to express the feeling that nothing in his career merited so great an honor. On this point all of the members of the Institute will share the writer's feeling that Dr. Douglas is too modest. James Douglas was born at Quebec, Canada, in November, 1837. His father Was a distinguished physician and surgeon, employing his skill in the field of philanthropy: He established the first retreat for the insane in the Dominion, to which lie. devoted himself up to the time of his departure from Canada, when it was taken over by the Government. The son spent 2 years in study at the University of Edinburgh, which lie entered in 1855. Returning to Canada, he graduated from Queens University, at Kingston, Ontario, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, having also studied medicine, and later theology. After his graduation he traveled extensively with his father in Europe and in the Orient, visiting Egypt several time's. They returned with important archaelogical collections, which Dr. Douglas subsequently donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in this city. He then returned to Edinburgh, where he continued his course in medicine, surgery being perhaps his chief interest at that time. He was subsequently licensed to preach and his contemporaries bore testimony to his broad philanthropy and to the sympathy which dominated his every act. His taste was distinctly literary; he had carried off a prize at Edinburgh in English literature.

IN recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, difference:; in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Theoretical analysis of flotation kinetics was initiated by Schuhmann,' who sought to define flotation rate of a given mineral and specified size range in terms of certain physical variables of the flotation system. Using as a basis for his analysis the bubble-particle encounter hypothesis previously advanced by Gaudin,' Schuhmann writes for the rate of flotation (R,.) of particles of average size x, Rx = PcPa(x) V F. [1] In this relation Pc and Pa represent, respectively, the probability of collision between particle and gas bubble in a given time interval and the probability of adhesion of particle to the bubble after collision. Rigorously speaking, the term PC does not have the significance of a probability factor, since it depends on the time interval and therefore can be numerically greater than unity. The term c(x) expresses the concentration of particles of an average size x in the flotation cell in weight per unit volume of pulp, and V denotes the total volume of pulp in the cell. The product, P,c(x)V, defines the frequency of particle-bubble collisl.on, and when it is multiplied by P,, the number of collisions per unit time resulting in successful adherence is obtained. The factor, F, measures the froth stability and is introduced because after fruitful bubble-particle contact some particles may still riot reach the froth launder. Coalescence of bubbles in the froth column or too short a bubble life could account for this effect. Schuhmann also introduced the concept of "specific flotation rate" (Q) to allow for the relative abundance of different mineral species in the flotation pulp. The specific flotation rate, having the dimension of reciprocal time, is defined as Eq. 2: Qx =Rx/c(x)v [2] and it also follows from Eq. 1 that Qx = PcPaF. [31 The theoretical aspects of flotation kinetics were also considered by Sutherland,3 who tried to improve Eq. 1 by expressing the probability factors in terms of such physical variables as particle radius (x), bubble radius (X), velocity of bubble relative to particle (v), the number of bubbles per unit volume of pulp (N) and the induction period (A) necessary for air-mineral adhesion. THE principle formulated by Grossmann1 for calculating hardenability of steel by multiplying the ideal diameter of "pure" iron-carbon alloys by factors for grain size and alloying elements has been confirmed on many steels and has proved useful in designing substitute alloy steels. Grossmann found that the typical behavior of the multiplying factors was to increase directly in proportion to the amount of the alloy present in a steel. However, the multiplying factor for the effect of silicon on hardenability was found by Grossmann to increase to a lesser degree as the amount of silicon was increased. In view of the in¬creasing use of silicon in heat-treating steels, the effect of silicon on hardenability is becoming more important. Calculation of the hardenability of high-silicon steels made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., indicated that the multiplying factor for silicon increased directly in proportion to the amount of silicon present. A more extended study of high-silicon steels covering fairly wide ranges of grain size, carbon, manganese, and aluminum has confirmed that up to 2 per cent silicon the multiplying factor is directly proportional to the silicon content. Manganese and aluminum factors have also been determined. The results of the study offer strong confirmation of the general validity of Grossmann's multiplying principle. TESTING PROCEDURE Steels on which the study of the effect of silicon on hardenability was based were made in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. The ingots were forged to bars, and sections were normalized prior to machining Jominy hardenability test specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under standard conditions.2 The depth of hardness penetration for determination of ideal diameter at "half hardness" was taken at the hardness level indicated in Fig. 20 in Grossmann's paper by the solid line for 50 per cent martensite in plain carbon steel. The depth of penetration of hardness on the Jominy specimen was converted to ideal diameter by the relation given in Fig. 28 of Grossmann's paper. Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Aluminum was determined as "acid-soluble aluminum" rather than as total aluminum, as it is probably more representative of the aluminum that is effective as an alloying agent. In addition to the elements nominally present in the steels, analyses were made for residual phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, copper, molybdenum and chromium on one heat of those made with the same materials during the same period. Actual grain size was determined by microscopic examination of small samples quenched in water after receiving the same thermal cycle as the Jominy hardenability specimens. Chemical analyses, heat-treatment, grain size, and hardenability are shown in Table I representing three ranges of composition.

In a recent article, it was shown that in the blast furnaces in Germany that are lined with carbon blocks no cooling plates are used, and that shower cooling is employed on the hearth and bosh sections. While one of the authors was in Germany he was told that one furnace was being operated without even the shower cooling on the bosh section, though the hearth section was shower-cooled. In discussion of this interesting situation with a number of blast-furnace operators in this country, it was made clearly and promptly evident that shower cooling was very unpopular, probably because of its messiness and its ineffectiveness. Both of the causes for the dislike of shower coolings are reasonable ones. Shower cooling can be and frequently is messy, but the present cooling of blast furnaces leaves much to be desired on that score. Shower cooling is ineffective as compared with plate cooling, so far as its usefulness in keeping the bricks cool enough not to melt or fall to pieces is concerned. However, the introduction of carbon linings changes the situation. No one is concerned with keeping a carbon lining cool, for no temperature in the blast furnace has any effect on carbon, which is just as stable at 3000°F. as it is at 70°F. The only concern is for the shell—to keep it cool enough for safety and comfort— and for that shower cooling is sufficient. Of course, with only the shell to cool, instead of the shell plus all the refractory material, much less water would be required, and the necessity for constant attention to the flow would be lessened, as the hundreds of inlets and outlets would be eliminated. Probably half of the water used in cooling a blast furnace is used for cooling the shaft and tuyeres and the remainder for the bosh and hearth sections. However, in view of the dislike of shower cooling in the United States, and particularly because at least one German blast furnace is operated with no cooling of the bosh section, thought was given to the possibility that a carbon-lined blast furnace might be operated without any cooling of the entire carbon-lined portion. For that reason a series of experiments was performed to determine what might be the temperature of the shell of a blast furnace protected by a carbon lining and operated under varying conditions up to a maximum inside temperature of 3000°F. A study of the behavior of retrograde condensation from gas mixtures was made in the presence and absence of sand in order to determine if the condensed liquid would re-vaporize in the Presence of sand. Methane-butane and methane-pentane mixtures that would form liquids by retrograde condensation when produced from a constant volume cell were used. The methane-butane mixtures of similar composition were produced by three different methods. The first two were charged into an empty cell and were produced in one case within a period of 9 hr and in the other within a period of 3 days. The third mixture was charged to a sand-packed cell and produced within a period of 9 hr. The curves relating composition of the produced gas to pressure obtained from these experiments show that equilibrium was maintained as long as liquid was condensing. However, during the portion of the pressure decline where the condensed liquid should be revaporizing, equilibrium was maintained only when the mixture was produced from the sand-packed cell. The methane-pentane mixture is produced only in the presence of sand. The data obtained for this system also show that equilibrium is maintained at all times during the pressure decline. These results indicate that revaporization is aided rather than prevented by the fact that the condensate "wets the sand." The significance to the petroleum industry of the behavior of hydrocarbons in the retrograde region is becoming increasingly important because a large percentage of reservoirs being discovered today arc of the gas-condensate type. The important characteristic of a gas-condensate reservoir is the retrograde condensation of a liquid phase throughout the reservoir if the pressure is allowed to decline. In order to prevent the loss of this retrograde liquid in some of these reservoirs, they are "cycled"; that is, the material produced from the reservoir is processed to remove the heavier hydrocarbons and the light fractions are returned to the reservoir to maintain the reservoir pressure. Another method of producing these reservoirs is Pressure depletion. There are other methods but they are not in general use. Although a large number of factors are involved in determining the optimum method of producing a reservoir, only the problem of whether the retrograde condensate resulting from pressure depletion will revaporize from sand at equilibrium conditions is considered in this paper. Also the data are limited to the methane-n-butane and the methane-n-pentane systerns at loo°F and one type of sand. Three types of tests were run in order to compare the revaporization of retrograde liquid formed in a cell with that formed in a sand-packed cell, and to establish the effect of time. The Ballyvergin area is located in County Clare on the southwest coast of Ireland. It is one of six areas in County Clare in which mining operations were carried out during the last century. The ores mined were high grade Cu-Pb-Ag deposits in the form of small fracture fillings and gash veins in the lower Carboniferous limestones. The zone of primary economic interest is situated on the north limb of a geosyncline which plunges moderately to the southwest. The zones of mineralization previously mined were associated with local structures and folds, and the initial geophysical investigations took the form of reconnaissance induced polarization measurements around, and between, the old mines. This work located an anomaly which, on drilling, resulted in a small extension of the Pb-Cu ore at the Ballyvergin mine. However, a potentially more important zone of mineralization resulted from the drilling of another IP anomaly near Ballyvergin. This wide anomaly was found to be a domal shaped deposit of disseminated chalcopyrite located at a depth of more than 100 ft. The deposit is controlled by local folding in the sediments and is of a type previously unknown in the area. More IP investigations are under way to locate other deposits of the same type. The Ballyvergin area is located in County Clare, about 35 miles northeast of Shannon Airport, near the Atlantic west coast of Southern Ireland (Fig. 1). Interest in the area stems from a number of occurrences of small, but high grade, Pb-Ag deposits. From the summer of 1960 to the spring of 1961, Irish Base Metals carried out a comprehensive exploration program on a 38-sq mile concession in east-central County Clare in an attempt to locate additional deposits of this type. Field operations consisted of geologic mapping, geochemical soil and stream sampling, geophysical surveying and diamond drilling. The geophysical program consisted primarily of detailed induced polarization (IP) surveys in the general vicinity of old mine workings, supplemented by electromagnetic and self-potential investigations. Subsequent diamond drilling of a well defined IP anomaly close to the old Ballyvergin mine disclosed a sizeable deposit of low grade disseminated copper, a type of deposit previously unknown in this area. REGIONAL GEOLOGY Topography: The topography is of the Karst type with low regional relief. The northern parts of the area are covered almost completely with glacial deposits including a large number of drumlins. Elsewhere the overburden is patchy and only moderately deep. A close network of roads makes every part of the area readily accessible, and rail and harbor facilities are available nearby — Fig. 2. Stratigraphy: The area was mapped on a reconnaissance basis by the Geological Survey of Ireland during the latter part of the 19th century at scales of 1 and 6 in. to the mile. RiteR, Salt Lake City, Utah.—We have every reason to believe that oil flotation will soon come into general use as a final guard against slime losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, and precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah— the old Eureka Hill property—where ores that were too low in value to warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble. Whether the intense vibration in the mill, due to the pounding of the heavy stamps, had caused small particles of grease to be shaken loose

MAGNESIUM alloys containing rare earth metals have received considerable attention during the past several years because of the need for light alloys having high strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Although much of the work reported earlier has dealt with alloys containing Mischmetal, it has been shown in two previous papersl, V hat distinctly different effects are produced by various rare earth metals and rare earth metal mixtures on the properties of magnesium. For example, much higher strengths are obtained in magnesium alloys containing didym-ium (essentially neodymium plus praseodymium) than in alloys made with Mischmetal, which contains all the rare earth metals in the proportions in which they occur naturally in the monazite ore. Mg-rare earth metal alloys are characterized by a relatively coarse grain size, which greatly impairs castability. The addition of zirconium as a second alloying ingredient has been shown8,7 to refine the grain size, which also produces a distinct improvement in the strength properties. Certain Mg-Mischmetal-Zr and Mg-Mischmetal-Zn-Zr alloy compositions which are currently being produced commercially have been discussed in dytail by Nelson and Strieter,8,4 who also present some in- formation on a Mg-low Ce-Mischmetal-Zr alloy, and by Nelson.8 A patent issued to Jessup, Emley, and Fisher9 emphasizes the superiority of Mg-didymium-Zn-Zr alloys over the corresponding alloys made with Mischmetal. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an extensive investigation concerned with the effect of increasing amounts of zirconium on magnesium sand casting alloys containing several different rare earth metal mixtures in varying amounts. The effect of the addition of zinc to some of these alloys is also being reported. Preparation and Testing of Alloys The alloys studied in this investigation were prepared in small laboratory melts according to the melting procedures described by Nelson1" as the Crucible Method. Electrolytic magnesium having the composition shown in Table I was used as the starting material. The rare earth metal alloying ingredients used in preparing these alloys were essentially of the compositions listed in Table 11. Some of the didymium-containing alloys were prepared using a Mg-didymium hardener. The rare earth metal content of this hardener analyzed 1.2 pct Ce, 10.4 pct Pr, 80.8 pct Nd, and 7.6 pct La. The zirconium was added in one of three forms: 1) as sponge zirconium obtained from the Bureau of Mines; 2) as a fused salt consisting of 50 pct ZrCl, and 50 pct alkali chlorides from which the zirconium is reduced by the magnesium; or 3) as a Mg-Zr hardener.
