ThE use of strain gages in the measurement of microplastic behavior of materials is well-known.'-3 Recently it has been suggested that similar techniques might be useful for determining stress relaation. It is the purpose of this report to comment on the use of strain gages in the measurement of strains in the vicinity of 10"6. We will also discuss observations of an anomalous anelastic behavior apparently associated with small temperature changes, which accompanies the unload portion of a load-unload microstrain test. The key to successful strain determinations at levels below 1 pin. per in. is a good gage-mounting technique and either precise ambient temperature control or a set of matched temperature-compensated gages. The importance of good mounting cannot be overemphasized, for example, as in the use of Eastman 910 contact cement. If the cement layer is not sufficiently thin and properly hardened, it is possible to observe anomalous negative stresses when small loads are removed, which relax back to zero in an orderly way with time. Such anomalous behavior, thought to be due to gage bonding, has been reported in microstrain experiments by Thomas and verbach' who observed a negative strain of -3 X lo-' upon unloading. This kind of behavior severely limits the over-all strain sensitivity which can be achieved in such tests. The relaxation of a small positive strain subsequent to unloading in a load-unload experiment is quite normal, however, and is to be expected. The occurrence of an apparent negative strain is also encountered in those instances where the elasticity of the bonding cement is exceeded—for example 0.5 pct or 5000 pin. for cured Eastman 910. An elastic strain of this magnitude can be encountered during load-unload type testing particularly in higher-strength materials (-150,000 yield strength). During the course of microplasticity studies on pure nickel and nickel alloys,' the authors have made the following observation. In a four-point bending test, two active gages are mounted one on each side of the beam as arms R1 and R z of a conventional strain-gage bridge circuit shown in Fig. l(a). This technique provides two advantages: the sensitivity is doubled because R1 and Rz experience opposite strains and temperature compensation is provided automatically because any ambient temperature change would cause both gages to see a strain of like sign whose signals would cancel in the circuit.

GOLD and beryllium form an intermediate phase composed of the two metals in equal atomic proportions and having the formula AuBe. According to Winkler,1 this phase probably exists in two modifications: beta, stable below about 600°C, and alpha, stable between 600°C and the melting point, about 740°C. Only the low- temperature beta form will be considered in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The gold used had a fineness of 999.75 to 999.85, balance mainly silver, and the beryllium purity was better than 99.8 pct. AuBe was prepared by melting the constituents in a beryllia crucible in an evacuated induction furnace. After melting and thorough mixing, the alloy was allowed to solidify in the crucible. No difficulty was encountered in obtaining a homogeneous ingot. Both chemical analysis and microscopic examination of the ingot showed that the alloy was essentially one phase, containing 50 at. pct gold. The alloy was quite brittle and powder samples could easily be pre- pared by grinding in an agate mortar. The X-ray diffraction patterns were made with CuK-alpha radiation in a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 57.3 mm in diameter. The film was placed unsymmetrically in the camera in order to afford a basis for am-shrinkage corrections. A sample homogenized at 5o0°C gave the same diffraction pattern as a sample taken from the as-melted ingot. GENERAL RESULTS The diffraction pattern of AuBe was readily indexed on the basis of a simple cubic lattice with ao = 4.659 ± 0.001kX. If the unit cell is assumed to contain four AuBe "molecules," the calculated X-ray density is 13.46 grams per cc as compared with the measured density of 13.55 gm per cc. The only missing reflections in the dsraction pattern are (100) and (220) (see Table I). Since these missing reflections are not those characteristic of body or face centering, the lattice of AuBe must be simple cubic. To locate the positions of the atoms within the unit cell, two possibilities had to be considered: I. The structure was disordered and there were eight positions to be filled by an "average" gold-beryllium atom. That the structure was disordered seemed unlikely since the lattice parameter did not vary with composition in alloys containing some- what more and somewhat less than 50 at. pct gold, indicating a fixed composition for AuBe.

The mines of the St. Joseph Lead Co. in St. Francois County, Missouri, form a roughly triangular area of about 45 square miles. Locally this is known as the Lead Belt. The four operating mines in the area at present are the Federal, Leadwood, Desloge, and Bonne Terre, in decreasing order of mine area and daily production. Mining began in 1864 and has been carried on in the district continuously since that time. As a group, the Lead Belt mines now handle 20,000 gal. per min. of water, average head about 465 ft., against a normal daily ore tonnage of 21,200 tons. For a six-day operating week this gives a ratio of 6½ tons of water per ton of ore. Total average pumping in 1931 was about 15,000 gal. per min. Since that time a large area of virgin territory has been opened, much of which has had temporary flush flows. About 75 per cent of the water enters in certain restricted very wet areas. Production figures are given in Table I. The figures by divisions for 1931 and 1941 are not exactly comparable, as there were several transfers of pumping loads from one division to another during that period of time. Geology The, basement formation in 'the Lead Belt area consists of the pre-Cambrian rhyolite porphyry and granite. Overlying this is the La Motte sandstone, of Middle Cambrian age, which offers a good medium for circulation of water. It varies in thickness up to 400 ft. Above this is the Bonne Terre dolomite, approximately 375 fl. thick, which in turn is overlain by the 150-ft. Davis shale. The formations above this, present in the Lead Belt in small areas only, are of minor importance. The ore bodies occur as large, horizontal tabular masses or as long, narrow runs; they are found throughout the Bonne Terre but largely in the lower 150 ft. The rather indefinite contact with the La Motte is a favorite ore horizon. Milling is entirely by open stope and pillar breast systems. To the south, west, and north of the district, sandstone outcrops are few and limited. Heavy faulting bounds The district on those sides and probably there is little if any artesian circulation from those directions. IT is well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited' natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of 'a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity, is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of, price, has no exact meaning; and, in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the, quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization. This statement brings us to the examination of amore fundamental aspect of the law of supply and demand as applied to natural resources; namely, that natural-resource reserves are not fixed in size: just as the current supply of a natural-resource commodity is a function of price, so its reserve is likewise a resultant of price. Natural-resource reserves; therefore, have no exact meaning without the specification of price, and in practice their measurement. cannot be divorced from considerations of

In a previous technical note' by Walter Rose, evidence is offered in support of the contention that "the possibility of describing oil recovery features in terms of capillary pressure phenomena has not been established entirely." It is not the purpose of this note to present further discussion of this possibility but rather to point out that the argument presented there does not appear to be generally valid. In the cited note' reference is made to the experiments of Welge2 wherein it was shown that when water was displaced by oil from a core the pressure in the water phase was less than in the oil phase but that when this oil was then produced by water drive the pressure in the water phase was greater than in the oil phase. Rose has concluded from these observations that conditions of static equilibrium did not obtain since the fluid saturations were such that phase discontinuities seemed unlikely. The argument from which this conclusion was drawn is based on the contention that "the pressure is always greatest in the non-wetting phase at each static interstitial interface of contact with the wetting phase." This premise appears to have been reached from a consideration of capillary phenomena in cylindrical tubes, although it may a1so hold for other types of pore geometry, hut as will be shown below it does not hold for all pore shapes and hence is not generally applicable. Since the pore structure of porous media such as reservoir rocks i- in general so complex as to defy exact description. it is undoubtedly of great value to establish a model in terms of pore shapes of known geometry, provided of course that the limitations of the model are recognized. That the limitations of the capillary. or cylindrical, tube model have not always been fully recognized will be evident from the following discussion of a pore of different shape hut one which may a. logically he considered a.; the capillary tube. It is with sincere regret that the members of the Institute will have heard of the death, on March 17th last, at Terre Haute, Ind., of Professor Charles 0. Thompson, A.M., Ph.D., President of the Rose Polytechnic Institute of that city, and for many years pre viously the head of the Worcester County (Mass.) Free Institute of Industrial Science, and in 1881 and 1882 one of the managers of this society. To us he was chiefly known by the excellent character of the work which he had performed, as a recognized leader among the technical educators of the country. He was a constant, and interested atten dant at our meetings, seeking to acquaint himself not less with all that was noteworthy in the practical attainments and developments of the branches of industry represented by our membership, than with such such facts as would be of service to him in shaping or guiding a wise course of instruction in the institutions of which he had charge. We shall not soon forget him, or the genial courtesy of his manner, or his ready words and thoughtful comments. Charles Oliver Thompson was born September 25th, 1836, at East Windsor Hill, Conn., where his father, Rev. William Thomp son, D.D., was professor in the Connecticut Theological Seminary, since removed to Hartford. The son was fitted for college under the late Paul A. Chadbourne, and entered Dartmouth College in 1854. He was graduated in 1858 with honors. In all the studies of his course he had maintained a high rank, but showed marked proficiency in chemistry and mechanical philosophy. In 1861 he received the degree of A.M., followed by that of Ph.D. from his own college in 1879, and from Williams in 1880. In September, 1858, the year of his graduation, he became principal of the Peacham Academy, Vt., remaining in that position until November of 1864, though during that period he devoted several months to practical work as a surveyor and civil engineer. Thus his experiences were developing the qualities which, later on, fitted him to carry out so successfully the plans of the thoughtful projectors of a new system of technical education, along a path before untrodden, but which the test of time and the indisputable proof of success have shown to be both wise and fruitful.

Understanding the sedimentation of relatively thick suspensions depends on a knowledge of the concentration of the solids at various positions in the pulp and the times required for thickening. Flocculated kaolin slurries were studied with the transviewer, a device utilizing X-ray absorption in conjunction with a scanning mechanism. A mathematical model based on the Schuhmann size distribution in conjunction with Poiseuille's law yields experimental filtration rates as a hction of pulp density. These calculations show accord with the experimental results. Accurate predictions of sedimentation results depend upon determining the number and size of pores for given conditions, since the voidage of the suspension controls the volume of liquor that can pass through an element of suspension per unit time. A study on the sedimentation of flocculated kaolin slurries has indicated that their sedimentation takes place by two different processes, dependent on the initial concentration of solids in suspension. One process occurs in dilute suspensions (less than about 2 pct solids by volume) in which a multitude of relatively small flocs settle by hindered settling. In this case, maximal settling velocity is independent of container geometry.1 r2 The other process occurs in relatively concentrated suspensions (greater than about 2 pct solids by volume) in which the mass is considered to be settling as an aggregate network or as one large floc, defined as to size by the dimensions of the container. In this case, container geometry affects sedimentation results significantly. Furthermore, it seems that this single floc is in a state of compression from the beginning of settling, and that two phases of compression settling exist during sedimentation. The first occurs during the early stage of settling where liquid exudes easily and rapidly from the floc, while the second occurs in the compacting portion of the floc where water escapes more slowly and with much more difficulty. Sedimentation of relatively thick suspensions may then be thought to be a filtration phenomenon in which a pulp thickens by the filtration of its contained liquor through the aggregate network of pulp above it. Every new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were introduced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. When two grains in a polycrystalline specimen meet at a point in the course of grain-boundary movements, and the new boundary created at the point is one of relatively low specific free energy, a nonequilibrium boundary condition occurs. The nonequilibrium is enhanced if the other grain boundaries involved at the point of meeting are relatively high in specific free energy. The nonequilibrium results in a correction by growth of the complex grain (two subgrains) to a large size, sufficient in many cases for it to become a self-propagating unit, i.e., a recrystallization grain. This mechanism, herein called "geometrical coalescence," is proposed as a logical origin for recrystallization nuclei, particularly for secondary recrystallization. RECENT publications1-' indicate that considerable progress has been made toward a complete understanding of the three microstructural processes in metals: recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. However, a major problem persists, namely, the origin of recrystallization nuclei. It is generally accepted that once a recrystallization nucleus, a secondary recrystallization nucleus particularly, has reached a certain size, it will continue to grow at the expense of its neighbors, simply as a consequence of grain-boundary free-energy considerations. What has remained obscure, however, is the mechanism whereby such a nucleus comes into being and grows to the self-propagating size. Recrystallization Nucleation in a Two-Dimensional Grain-Boundary System In the left portion of Fig. 1 is shown schematically the meeting of grains 1 and 4 on disappearance of boundary 2-3, i.e., the boundary that existed between grains 2 and 3, as might happen in the course of normal grain-boundary migration. If, by chance —and the probability is not necessarily small— grains 1 and 4 are close together in their mutual orientations, or in some other special way mutually oriented so that the new common boundary has relatively a very low specific free energy (hereinafter referred to by s), then the grain boundary arrangement as depicted in the figure is highly unstable. This is particularly so if boundaries 1-3, 3-4, 4-2, and 2-1 are high in their s values. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that boundary 1-4 has a s equal to zero, and the s's of all the other boundaries present are equal to each other and constant, then the boundary arrangement on the right in Fig. 1 will be

The crushing of ore, as defined by Taggart, is "usually a stage process, utilizing . . . machines especially suitable for the reduction of particular sizes. . . . down to a final stage, employed for the reduction of the finest sizes. ... In contradistinction, comminution to 20-mesh or finer is called grinding. There is a twilight zone in which the product is 6, 10, or 14-mesh limiting size which is either crushing or grinding. ..." Since the data in this paper pertain to a rod-mill operation, comminuting a particular ore size of ¾ in. to a final stage, coarser than 20-mesh, the rod mill is designated as a "fine crusher machine" in this paper. The published literature discloses a wealth of data regarding a rod mill as a fine-grinding machine but relatively little as a fine-crushing operation. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is relatively high in sulphides, and the gangue rock and the sulphides are of about the same hardness. In the presence of any action by classification, the coarser sizes are definitely very lean in sulphide minerals.

IT is only within the past 10 years that serious attempt appears to have been made to improve rotary drilling fluids by the application of the principles of colloid chemistry, although the use of chemicals to control the rheological properties of clay slips has long been known in the ceramic industry. The main difficulty apparently lay in the lack of a complete analysis of all of the functions of a drilling fluid in the drilling of the well, together with the lack of adequate consideration of how colloid science could be applied to secure these ends, and particularly how apparent antithetical properties of the fluid could be compromised. Thus one analysis1 of the many requirements of a drilling fluid proved conclusively that the viscosity should be low, in order that cuttings and entrained gas might be eliminated effi-ciently in the settling ditch, while the loss in carrying capacity accompanying low viscosity could be regained by increasing either the density of the mud or the upward velocity of the mud stream in the annular space of the well, and the danger of sticking of the drill stem due to rapid settling in case of enforced suspension of drilling operations could be eliminated by enhancing the thixotropic properties of the fluid. The desired properties of the drilling fluid having thus been established, it was a natural step to treat the fluid with vis-cosity-reducing chemicals, such as salts of weak organic acids1,2-for example, sodium tannate or gallate-and to adjust the pH to the alkaline side to such a degree of thixo-tropy as would give low viscosity and low yield point under the conditions of flow prevailing in the settling ditch, but rapid gelation and high yield point when quiescent in the annular space during shut-downs. In fact, flow in the settling ditch should be just short of turbulent while flow in the well, together with the flow of mud past the cuttings, is practically always turbulent. The use of chemicals other than those mentioned, such as Calgon (sodium hexametaphosphate) and certain other phosphates together with sodium tannate, has now become standard practice and it is the consensus that this method of treatment has proved to be an important step in the development of the art of drilling oil wells.

The concepts of "redox potential" and "oxide-ion activity" are suggested as measures of the fundamental slag properties of interest to the extraction metallurgist. Thermodynamic data for single oxides are presented graphically in these terms and a method of expressing desulfurization of steel in electrochemical terms is indicated. The application of the theovy to mixtures of oxides (slags) is discussed and the redox potential is shown to provide a link between all the redox equilibria in a slag-metal system. In particular, the redox potential of the slag, its basicity, and the oxygen partial It is now generally recognized that slags are mixtures of polymeric anions of silicates, aluminates, phosphates, and so forth, neutralized by cations. However, conventional thermodynamic treatments of slags have almost always been in terms of activities of the pure component oxides (e.g., SiO,, CaO, A1203, and so forth), which are known not to exist as such in slags. While this type of empirical treatment is perfectly acceptable and provides a rigorous and self-consistent way of considering thermodynamic properties, it can give little guide to the structure of slags, since its very nature ig- pressure are closely connected. Direct deternzination of these by electrode-potential measurements is possible. Literature calculations of ion activities in the system Ca0 -Fe0-SiO,/molten iron are used to evaluate redox potentials, which are shown to correlate with data on sulfur partition in the system. In addition to its application to equilibrium conditions, an electrochenzical approach to slag-metal reactions might provide a basis for new methods of studying the kinetics of these reactions and for plant-control instruments in the pyrometallurgical industries. nores such complications. Recently, the thermodynamic properties of some slags have been successfully interpreted in terms of activities of anions of varying degrees of complexity. (While these have been successful curve-fitting exercises, there is no direct implication that the anions used in the models are necessarily the ones which actually exist in slags.) FOR some time mining engineers have been interested in the possibility of using small diameter shafts, sunk by core drilling, as aids to ventilation and as emergency escapeways. The possibilities are interesting to contemplate, but new methods involve unknowns, and interest tends to remain passive until these unknowns are solved. Recently we have completed two 36-in. diam. core drilled shafts, and wish to make the data on these available to the industry. Both shafts were drilled for the McLain Fire Brick Co., one at its Buckeye mine and the other at its Colonial mine. Both mines are in the fireclay underlying the Lower Kittanning coal. Both mines have been in operation for a number of years [ ] and have required expensive maintenance work on return airways. It was decided that considerable savings could be effected by short-circuiting the air to the surface through small shafts. It was also realized that these holes, located near the present workings, would be of added value as emergency escapeways. Originally, 48-in. diam. shafts were considered, but actual computations showed 36-in. diam. shafts were more than ample at both mines. The shaft at the Buckeye mine is 240 ft deep, and that at the Colonial mine 258 ft deep. Both holes were started in the lower part of the Conemaugh formation and penetrated Conemaugh and Allegheny strata. The holes were started through the unconsolidated materials overlying bedrock by constructing a concrete collar with a wall thickness of 8 in. Then the shafts were drilled by the shot-core drill method. An annular groove was cut in the rock by the abrading action of chilled steel shot run under the shoe of the core barrel. The drilling was done in stages, the core barrel drilling the groove for a certain distance depending on conditions encountered, and then the cores broken off and taken out in sections. The core barrel had a 36-in. o.d. and the finished diameter of the shaft measured almost 37 in. The major questions that could not be answered until the completion of the first shaft were, (I) how much ground water would be encountered, how would it hinder the drilling, and how difficult would it be to seal off, and, (2) how would the walls of the hole stand up. The holes of course could be cased or lined, but that is considerable added expense in any shaft.

EXPOSURE of steels to a fast-neutron flux results in helium generation by (n,a) reactions. The elements Fe, Ni, Cr, and N are major participants in the (n,a) reaction and helium concentrations of up to 5 x 10"5 atom fraction could accrue in fuel clads after a year of service in proposed fast reactors.' Such concentrations of helium can severely reduce the ductility of alloys at temperatures of reactor service. The phenomenon of helium embrittlement has been studied in austenitic alloys which were irradiated with particles as a rapid means of producing significant helium concentrations.2-5 The pres-ent work is a continuation of those studies and is concerned with helium effects in a ferritic stainless steel. I) EXPERIMENT Small sheet tensile samples with a gage length of 0.50 in. and a cross-section of 0.009 by 0.040 in. in the gage length were punched from cold-rolled type 405 stainless steel. The composition of the steel used in this work is given in Table I. Prior to helium injection, the samples were annealed 24 hr at 760°C which caused complete recrys-tallization with a resulting grain size of 40 u. This treatment rendered the alloy completely ferritic and carbide particles, 0.5 to 2 uin size, were present at a density of 1 x 1011 cm-3, Fig. 1. These carbide particles were probably a mixture of the M7C3 and M4C types.6 Helium was injected into the samples by irradiation with a particles from a cyclotron, which produced uniform concentrations through the center two-thirds of the sample thickness. Details of this procedure were previously described.' The average helium concentration, as measured on a gas-source mass spec- 11) RESULTS A) Tensile Tests. The results of the tensile tests are given in Table I1 where the values shown are averages of two samples. There was no significant effect of helium on either the yield strength or tensile strength at 550" or 650°C but an increase in both is apparent at 750°C. Samples with helium showed a 20 pct loss in total elongation at 650°C which increased to a 55 pct loss at 750°C. The uniform elongation is not affected by helium at 550" or 650°C but shows an increase at 750°C.
