This paper outlines in a step-by-step approach all of the major tasks to be undertaken for the design of a complex multi-seam open pit coal mine. Examples are drawn from three such projects in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia, where computer techniques for equipment production rate estimation, mining block layout, and mine scheduling were used extensively. The paper is divided into two sections - Conceptual Planning and Detailed Planning; and the various tasks associated with these sections are discussed in detail, with examples of typical problems to be overcome.

THE Eastern magnetite industry has not failed in its contribution to the war program during the past year. Man-power shortage was the critical problem in maintaining production and for the last half of the year, owing to lack of man power, it was necessary for some mines to change from seven to six days per week schedule. At Cornwall, Pa., the mine operated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. produced approximately 2,000,000 tons of crude ore and 1,200,000 tons of iron ore concentrates, a decrease of about 10 per-cent compared with the previous year. Railroad haulage in the open-pit at this mine was discontinued, being replaced by Mack trucks of approximately 30 tons' capacity. At the Mt. Hope mine in New Jersey, the Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. produced about 195,000 long tons of crude ore obtaining 70.000 long tons of lump ore and 35,800 long tons of concentrates. An additional 24,500 long tons of concentrates was produced from a stock pile of 47.000 long tons of crude ore accumulated during the latter half of 1943, following the fire in their old dry mill. This is a story of progress through research, invention and innovation-progress that made a small mine in Missouri into a large and prosperous corporation. The St. Joseph Lead Co. was founded in Borne Terre, Missouri, in 1864. At that time, the mine consisted of a narrow trench eight feet deep; the mill was a hand-operated jig; and the smelter, a charcoal oven with a sloping hearth. During the first year, production was suspended for two months because of an invasion by the Confederate army. There have been few interruptions since that time.

Expectations for coal in the early to mid-1970s prompted the government and industry to pursue research and development programs to increase underground and surface mining coal Productivity and net coal recovery. Several programs concerned advanced surface mining methods for thin seam coal recovery. Three such programs, along with related areas of interest, presented in this paper are: extended depth augering for trench-strip applications; high recovery auger heads for enhanced recovery; and variable wall mining in low cover longwalls. Conceptual development is examined, prototype testing is discussed, and potential operations are considered.

Crushing development at Duval Corp.'s Sierrita concentrator in Sahuarita, Ariz., has been a continuing effort since plant startup in January 1970. The original crushing system was designed to produce 65 000 t/d (72,000 stpd) of ore. However, in the summer of 1970 the Sierrita plant was averaging only 43 000 t/d (47,000 stpd) due to coarser than expected secondary crushing plant feed, lower than design crusher operating availability, and inability to achieve design tertiary crusher power draught at an acceptable hydraulic support pressure.

The role of gravity separation in the mineral industry is briefly considered in perspective. The mineralogical and laboratory approaches to gravity process design are examined with emphasis on process technology selection. The equipment available for small scale and pilot test-work is discussed, particularly in regard to scale-up and the acquisition of reliable, accurate data. Transposition of performance data from pilot scale to plant scale is explained. The available types of full scale gravity separation equipment are discussed with emphasis on large high-capacity units. Plant layout and selection of ancillary equipment are considered.

WHEN the senior author of this paper presented an article on Fine Coal Cleaning by the Hydrotator Process,1 at the February, 1927, meeting, that process had been developed in the anthracite region only to clean what is known as "slush" or "silt." This size constitutes all of the material passing the finest screen used at any particular colliery. Some use a 3/32 -in. round-hole screen and others use a 1/16 -in. round hole. Practice varies throughout the anthracite region, but the tendency seems to be toward the finer screen.

The strong temperature dependence of the flow stress of bcc metals has prompted considerable interest and controversy concerning the rate-controlling influence of the Peierls' mechanism upon deformation in metals.18"21 Dorn and Rajnak" recently offered a criterion for Peierls' deformation utilizing a line-energy model of a dislocation to estimate the saddle-point activation energy, for the nucleation of a pair of kinks as a function of applied stress and the height and shape of the peierls9- barrier. Over the last several years, unfavorable economic and political pressures on open-pit mining have placed the industry in a generally defensive position. As a consequence, there have been changes in the traditional organizational and production methods to increase operating efficiency. For example, staff groups that were once used almost exclusively for production support are now being organized as mining/environmental specialists. These specialized groups are responsible for obtaining mining permits and insuring compliance with existing permit requirements. Permit issurance and renewal continues to grow as a major budget item in open-pit operations.
