The annual production and productivity of underground coal mines in recent years declined from 334 Mt (368 million st) and 14.5 t (16 st) per man per shift in 1969 to approximately 254 Mt (280 million st) and less than 8 t (9 st) per man per shift in 1977. Productivity is still hovering at about 7.25 t (8 st) per man per shift. According to US Bureau of Mines, the estimated US coal reserve is about 396 Gt (437 billion st), 68.65% of which is obtainable by underground mining methods. Approximately 153 Gt (169 billion st), or about 85.2% of the high Btu premium coking coal of the eastern US, would need to be extracted by underground mining methods. It is thus apparent that under- ground mining will continue to play a major role in total US coal production, which is expected to rapidly increase to about 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) by 1985, with about 606 Mt (668 million st) being contributed by underground mines. Production Potential of Continuous Mining The production potential of a continuous mining section depends primarily on the producing ability of the miner, transporting ability of the face haulage, and the matching of the two systems. The producing ability of the continuous miner depends on its actual cutting ability and the time available for cutting coal. The performance of 10 continuous miners operating in coal seams of various thicknesses were monitored in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, using continuous electrical power analyzers and time studies. The recordings on current and power strip charts yielded an accurate analysis of the cutting, trimming, and idle times of the machines on a full shift basis. Continuous miners of various models and sizes from 112-298 kW (150-400 hp) were monitored. G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals Co.)-The author's paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. This plot is reproduced by alor in X-ray Metallography. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author's recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fezo3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann's method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. He has chosen one for the formation of Fe2O3 from FeO and oxygen which gives Fea3 activities 50 pct higher

A concept gaining attention among rock mechanics researchers in studies of soil-structure inter- action is the use of compressible packing between the structure such as tunnel lining and the soil or rock. Lester H. Gabriel, provided information about work on this concept at the II Symposium on Rapid Excavation, October 16-17, 1969, Sacramento State College, Sacramento, Calif. It is well-known that loads transmit their effects to those locations which deform least. Traditionally, the question to be answered by the structural engineer is how rigid the structure ought to be. The stronger the structure, the more resistant it becomes to deformation. If it is more rigid than the surrounding strata, the structure acts as a pillar, focusing load on itself. However, if the structure is less rigid than the surrounding strata, blocking or packing between the structure and the enclosing material facilitates the formation of soil or rock arch. The object then is to design and build structures such as tunnel linings, which harness the advantages of carefully planned small movements. Tests on plaster cylinders imbedded in granular sand and loaded were compared to those of plaster cylinders protected in sheathing of polyfoam rubber. The compressible sheath permitted support of up to ten times greater loads Gabriel, Lester H., "Principles of Soil-Structure Interaction Applied to Tunnel Linings." Hecla Mining Co. has successfully used shotcrete with substantial cost savings for ground support purpose. To date, the use of shotcrete in Hecla's operations has been limited to openings where long-term high quality support was required, in exceptionally difficult ground, and to a limited degree in stope support. Experience with both the wet and dry process indicated that the latter was better for their applications. The availability of effective accelerators which reduce losses from rebound, give high-early strength and permit placement in wet conditions, led to this conclusion. The gross cost under such conditions as those at Hecla, including rebound losses and overshooting, is estimated by Hecla to be $51 per cu yd.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE NEW YORK SECTION - The annual meeting of the New York Section was held at the Machinery Club, May 7. While the dinner, at which fifty attended, was in progress, the names of the nominees for next year's officers were posted. The result of the election was as follows: Chairman, E. P. Mathewson; vice-chairmen, William Y. Westervelt, R. M. Atwater, Jr.; treasurer, Wilber Judson; executive committeemen, Lucius W. Mayer, Edwin S. Berry. The subject for the evening was "Organization and Campaign in France of the 27th Engineers." Colonel O. B. Perry described the many difficulties surmounted, for it was necessary to work with untrained men ALLEN H. ROGERS WALTER S. DICKSON CHAIRMAN OF NEW YORK SECTION SECRETARY OF NEW YORK SECTION and shortage in supplies. He described the unusually fine character and physique of his officers, which made it possible to make the untrained men most efficient. He described in some detail the work of building bridges over the Meuse River and the bringing up of supplies to the first army base, in particular at the Argonne-Meuse sector; General Pershing gave a personal commendation of the work undertaken by this regiment. The Colonel described the methods of operating the transportation of ammunition and supplies to the "army dumps," by which at the time of signing the armistice there had been brought up 600,000 tons of equipment for use in the projected campaigns. An interesting item was that 3,600,000 sand bags had been provided, in case the Germans should be able to turn the line of the American troops. Captain Edwin S. Berry described the methods of sending materials to the front lines and gave figures to indicate the huge quantities required, adding that the order of preference was troops, ammunition, food, and engineers' supplies. J. STEVENS*—The authors state that the contamination in the metal was due mostly to the ladle refractories. Did the contamination vary with different brands of refractories or different qualities in the ladle ? C. B. POST (authors' reply)—That would be expected. In our shop we have used a grade of firebrick which is fairly standard. We do use high refractory nozzles to combat this erosion and high refractory sleeves, but there is such a problem when you get a skull in a ladle you just cannot use these high refractory bricks; you rip out the whole ladle getting the skull cleaned up. The acid bricks form a glass, and you can pull the skull out when you do get them. I believe you might find variations among the different refractories depending on how much silicon is in the brick. This determines how much silica is going into the interface between the steel and the brick. Our brick is about 35 pet alumina and 65 pet silica. With a brick of 35 pet alumina in the slag patches new calculations would have to be made. R. PARDEE*—Where can you draw the line in determining the refractories as being a silica refractory ? C. B. POST—More silica than about 50 pet. I think perhaps that is generally the criterion. The brick we use is a good high grade fire brick. T. S. WASHBURN*--With reference to the higher silicon that is recommended as a result of this investigation, is it contemplated that the specified range would be raised to 0.40-0.60 pet silicon, or possibly 0.50-1.00 pet silicon? These higher silicon ranges would affect the physical properties of the steel and consequently there might be some complications with respect to educating the consumers to 'accept this revision of the conventional analysis. TO facilitate some recent microscopic investigations it was necessary to devise special mounting techniques for the polishing of two quite different metallographic specimens. These techniques are extremely simple and are submitted for whatever value they may be to other investigators. The first specimen mount proved very satisfactory for the study of untempered martensite. Since it was undesirable to heat the specimen, lucite or bakelite mounting materials could not be used in the conventional manner. A cold mount was made by drilling a hole of the same diameter as the specimen in a cylindrical piece of polystyrene then press- ing the steel specimen into the hole on an ordinary vise. A prefabricated disk of lucite should work equally well. The only precautions necessary are that the hole be drilled out cleanly and the piece of steel be pressed into the plastic uniformly, otherwise the mount will crack. The second type of mount was required for the study of slag specimens by reflected light. Mounting these specimens in bakelite and then attempting to rough finish the surfaces on graded emery papers resulted in a considerable amount of chipping and breaking out of the slag particles. This made further satisfactory polishing almost impossible. It was found, however, that if the bakelite-mounted specimen was first rough finished to a point where a good specimen surface became visible, the interstices in the specimen surface could be filled and the polishing completed. This filling was accomplished by placing a small amount of lucite powder in the bottom of the steel specimen mold then reinserting the bakelite-mounted specimen on top of the lucite powder. Reheating the mold to the proper temperature and applying the required pressure resulted in the formation of a thin disk of lucite on the bottom of the bakelite specimen. By carefully grinding the lucite away a uniform surface including the slag specimen was obtained and further polishing was unhampered by slag disintegration.

The model which Birkimer has developed to explain the increase in fracture strength of brittle, rock-like materials with increasing rate of loading may have some applicability. It should be noted that since his analysis presupposes elastic behavior he could equally well express his result as an increase of stress to fracture with increasing strain rate, a fact which is well known. Certainly his experimental results do not contradict his strain rate to the one third power law. On the other hand, we do feel that the data are insufficient and inadequate to establish the relation- ship definitely. 'In metals, the whole fracture picture is greatly complicated by concomitant plastic flow and, in rocks, by the presence of macroscopic flaws and inhomogeneties. Both lead to uncertainties as to the state of stress during the fracture process. He quotes in support of his theory Rinehartfs results on rock in which the latter found that under impulsive loading by explosives, rocks appear to be many times stronger than under static loading. We suspect that the observed increase has little specific relevance to the theory which Birkimer puts forward. Rinehart's measurements were made by spalling rocks using a sawtooth shaped stress wave of known intensity and duration. The rise time of such a pulse is essentially zero, certainly less than 0.1 microseconds, so that it is not possible to apply Birkimerfs theory quantitatively. We favor attributing the increase in fracture strength to two factors. First, the action takes place very quickly in an exceedingly thin region so that statistically the probability is small of encountering one or more of the large flaws that contribute so significantly to the reduction of strength of most rocks under tension. It is also conceivable that the compressive wave that has just passed by the region of fracture has strengthened the rock by collapsing some of the larger flaws. Second, the state of stress obtaining at the time of fracture is not all that existing when the

IN order to determine the magnitude of thermal conductivity changes resulting from alloying vanadium with titanium and a few other elements, several sam~les were PrePared and measured. The thermal conductivity -values reported herein in Table I were determined with an apparatus previously described.' As in recently reported2 determinations on uranium and uranium alloys, whose thermal conductivities are in the same range as vanadium," the accuracy of the values was checked by using synthetic sapphire." The error in the measurement is estimated to be '-3 pct or 0.003 cal sec-1 cm-l "C-1, whichever is larger. The vanadium used in preparing the samples was the calcium-reduced type and was supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. as 99.6+ pct pure. All alloying elements used in the preparations were 99+ pct pure. A nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc furnace was used for melting the alloys and, without opening the furnace, each ingot was re-melted a number of times to insure homogeneity. The samples as prepared by the Armour Research Foundation were machined from as forged material without annealing. Acknowledgment The note is based on work performed under the auspices of the AEC. AmonG the things that will always remain to the credit of the foundry-industry is the circumstance that nearly all the research-work of practical value in daily routine was done by active foundrymen, and the results were freely given by them to the world. Moreover, while consumers felt that to them was due a more systematic and exact method of work, the foundry-men again were the first to act in the establishment of specifications under which their product should be sold. To come to more recent times, the American Foundrymen's Association has not only made an elaborate series of tests on cast-iron, and adopted tentative specifications based upon them, but, in addition, it has urged the International Association for Testing Materials, through its American representatives, to make the testing and specification of cast-iron a distinct issue. The half-hearted support first granted was greatly augmented by the rapidly-growing recognition accorded to the enormous iron-casting industry; and when the president of the American Society for Testing Materials was instructed to ask for a special commission for this purpose, Europe was ready to cooperate. During the Buda-Pesth congress, at, which America was represented by Prof. Howe, Mr. Wood and myself, it was decided to add five members to the general committee on steel and iron, whose special duty should be to conserve the interests of the cast-iron branch of the industry. America took up the work at once, and enlarged its committee to 67 members, all of whom were actively concerned in the manufacture or study of cast-iron in all of its branches. At the organization-meeting in Philadelphia, April 25, 1903, Mr. Walter Wood was elected chairman, and myself secretary; and, within a week thereafter, the sub-committees were appointed and became active at once. IN a study of the effects of solid solution alloying on the deformation texture of titanium, an alloy containing 3.8 pct A1 was found to develop a (0001) [1010] texture instead of the texture characteristic of pure titanium.ls2 A short investigation has been made of the change in texture with aluminum content. Alloys containing 0.27, 0.47, 1.05, and 1.43 pct A1 were prepared by vacuum arc melting, using iodide titanium as the base material. Homogenized ingots were reduced 90 pct in thickness by cold rolling. Pole figures were obtained using the usual film techniques. Fig. 1 shows that the change from the tilted to the nontilted (0001) position is gradual. The dashed contour lines in Fig. 1 indicate the extent to which data was collected. The addition of 0.27 pct A1 resulted in a decrease in the transverse spread of basal poles. With increasing aluminum content, the amount of the tilt becomes less and the region of highest intensity takes the shape of a ring about the center of the pole figure. For aluminum contents greater than 1 pct, the (0001) [1010] texture is definitely present—the sharpness increasing as the amount of solute is increased.* It is interesting to note that Williams and Eppel-sheimer9 eported for commercial grade titanium a high intensity region 20" toward the rolling direction from the rolling plane normal in addition to. one 30" toward the transverse direction. Their basal pole figure was similar to Fig. 1, row inree. The observation that the texture changes gradually with solute concentration is similar to the results of similar studies on copper." At the present time these effects are not clearly understood. The transient response of earth formations may be tlcter.171ined by means of four electrodes mounted coli-rienrly on n sonde. Exponentially decaying current pules are applied to one pair of electrodes and the re.rrrlting voltage transient at the other pair is recorded. It is shown by theoreticol analysis and verified by laboratory experiments that this arrangement readily yields the direct resistivity of the formation and provides valrrable additional information as well. INTRODUCTION Although electrical transients have been employed with moderate success in geophysical prospecting, their application to well logging has received virtually no attention in technical literature. In the conventional direct resistivity logging methods only the zero frequency impedance of the formation under study is measured, and no information is obtained regarding its reactive characteristics. Since the use of certain transients appears to offer some advantages in this respect, experiments were performed on a laboratory scale to investigate this possibility. This investigation was limited to a study of a four-electrode array where both the receiving and transmitting electrode pairs are mounted on a logging sonde, and decaying exponential pulses are applied to the transmitting electrodes. Two Alco 3 ½ -ton motor trucks were used by Young Bros. while operating at the Mammoth Collins mine at Shultz, Ariz. One was equipped with an oil tank holding 1,075 gal. and was used for the transportation of "tops." The, other was fitted with a stake body and used to carry machinery, wood, rails, pipe and all classes of miscellaneous supplies. The bodies were made of oak with maple flooring and were attached to the frame of the chassis by U-bolts, to avoid drilling the main members of the frame. Most of the hauling was done from Tucson, a distance of 47;2 miles. During the first. 3 months, part of the road was in very bad condition and the tire cost was excessive. After this part was repaired the road was in fair condition, but never good. There were no excessive grades or bad sand, but wagon ruts, too narrow for the truck wheels and of a different gage, caused heavy tire loss; while chuck holes, sharp curves and stones, both imbedded and loose, were objectionable features. During wet weather the trucks could not get sufficient traction to climb some of the hills and were likely to stick in the mud in certain places, so that no attempt was made to run them unless they were on the road when the rain started. This lost time amounted to about 5 per cent. of the total, but, whenever possible, it was utilized in making minor repairs. The price of gasoline, was from 17 to 21 c. per gal. Rubber tires were used throughout. Drivers were paid $4.50 to $5 per shift, and a return trip to Tucson was counted as two shifts even when made in one day. Drivers were provided with a room in Tucson and were paid for all time lost due to causes beyond their control. Trucks were loaded one way only.

Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. UNDERGROUND lighting in the zinc mines of the Tri-State district can be separated into four di-visions. 1. Foot of shaft. 2. Pumps, fans. incline hoists and other stationary machinery. 3. Haulage ways. 4. Headings and stopes. One of the main improvements in lighting around the bottom of the shaft is in the use of skidoo flash lights, which have replaced the old electric skidoo bells. These bells were used as signals from the hoisterman to the tub hooker. In the event that a can bumped the side of shaft or a rock spilled from the can when dumping; the hoisterman rang the skidoo bells as a signal for all to leave the vicinity of the shaft bottom on a dead run. These bells were much better than no signal at all, but many of them were often out of order; the worst feature being that when out of order this fact was not immediately indicated. The electric flash-light signals work on the opposite principle and are burning at all times except when the hoisterman breaks the circuit when signaling danger. Therefore should a break or short occur in this arrangement, the shaft bottom is immediately thrown in darkness. Since the reaction from the eye is quicker than from ear, there is a slight saving of time- to the men escaping from the point of danger. Even this brief period of time may save a life. One other, point, to be emphasized, is that all lights near the shaft bottom should be on the signal circuit so that the entire area is momentarily darkened. I. have inspected mines where only one or two lights are used as signals, with the remaining lights around the shaft on another fixed circuit. In this case the flashing of the signal lights is almost drowned out by the stationary lights. These flash signals must be as startling as possible, which can only be done by flash-ing all the lights.

A METHOD of top slicing has been devised at the Miami Copper Co.'s mine at Miami, Ariz., which differs radically in some ways from the customary methods of top slicing. The area of that section of the orebody in which top slicing is used is about 800 ft. square. The ore, while for the most part soft, is, nevertheless, considerably harder than the capping. The latter is siliceous, seldom containing any clay or other binding material, and breaks into fine particles so that it runs like sand if given the opportunity. Because of these facts, and because the ore is above the average grade of the mine ore, it has been mined by top slicing. Haulage levels are opened up 150 ft. apart, vertically, with two sublevels between at 50-ft. intervals, to facilitate the building of ore chutes. These sublevels are used during slicing for distributing air in the ventilation system. On the haulage level the drifts are spaced on 50-ft. centers, and raises along these drifts are also spaced on 50-ft. centers, except the incline raises as hereafter noted. The raises are cribbed where necessary. Where the wear will be excessive, ¼ -in. iron plates are spiked to the top of every third set of cribbing, for its protection. When top slicing was first used, an attempt was made to carry a slicing face from fifty to several hundred feet long. Timber and other, supplies were brought in through long drifts from an auxiliary shaft. Great difficulty was experienced in keeping these drifts open, the side pressure breaking the posts and the top weight breaking, both caps and posts. Furthermore, the men could not work efficiently while these drifts were .being repaired. The slicing faces advanced irregularly, due to varying conditions, and in many ways the results were not all that could be desired. It was then decided to divide the slicing area into blocks 200 ft. square and this wins later changed to 250 ft. square.

For the past several years the policy of a large section of our mining industry in relation to our present bureaucratic form of government has become increasingly amusing, if not a little disgusting. In the past, mining men have always featured themselves the self-announced champions of free enterprise, and, generally, this conviction, was substantiated by their deeds. In recent years, however, a large group of the industry, while still expounding, from the front porch, the principles of free enterprise and a sound economy based upon the law of supply and demand, have gone around to the back door with palm extended, to join labor, farmers, bureaucrats, and other pressure groups to get their share of the take. The procurement of subsidies, bonuses, increased metal prices, and government assistance in a multitude of forms seems to have obscured from their thinking the welfare of the country as a whole and the sounder economic principles of a balanced budget and lower taxes. At the recent Colorado Mining Association convention in Denver, I. was alarmed to see just how far this specialinterest type of thinking has progressed within the mining industry. Government assistance to mining. was generally considered inadequate, and a flat bonus for any new mineral discovery was proposed. It was disquieting, too, to learn how far the federal alphabet agencies have entered into the mining industry and of the thousands of highly paid technical. men on the federal payroll required to man these numerous overlapping agencies and bureaus. Now all this is very fine, and some aspects of the federal give-away program can be very appealing to the unsuspecting in the mining industry as they have been to those in other groups. Some of these expensive programs may bring about a few dividends or even several new mines. But to this whole line of pump-priming reasoning there is one big disastrous fallacy.

J.--It requires a good deal of timber to operate, especially the caving systems. An important function in mine operations now seems to be forestry and to operate a timber tract in order to insure a supply of timber. By depleting the timber resources of your section, you only increase your costs later when timber must be brought in from the Pacific Coast or the East. Our experience has been that any square-set method of timbering is the most expensive. Timbering for stoping systems, top slicing if you will, although it uses a large volume of time does not require as expensive timbering as the square-set method; also it does not require as long a life for-the timber, so that such wood as birch and maple, which have strength but not long life under the fungus conditions in the mine, may be used. All the drifts in the orebody are thoroughly timbered, and it has required a lot of timber. If we had it to do over, we would spend a lot more money in the development of rock drifts; as a matter of fact, we must ultimately come to that any way.

Spots Goblenski fluffed up his pork chop sideburns, checked the angle of his wide brim Stetson and ambled off the airplane. The pert Braniff hostess stood smartly at the door. "Goodbye now, take care," she said in the special airline stewardess voice superimposed on a Texas drawl. Spots smirked, "You betcha, Peaches, you too." It was a crystal clear, sunny day which New York can have at any season of the year (but rarely gets credit for) and being in high spirits Spots did not mind being captured by a cab driver. That is the cab driver brushed aside all other conversation to give a continuous colorful commentary on New York politics, revealing in the process that only the very wealthy and cab drivers share the same political views in that city. After installing himself in the fading opulence of the Hotel Roosevelt, he finished the day with a steak dinner with baked potato under sour cream and hearts of lettuce salad with Roquefort dressing at the Black Angus restaurant. The next morning he had an appointment with Hemphill, Frye and Louderdock. The offices of this prestigious firm of management consultants are high in the Pan Am Building. He was courteously received by a lacquered receptionist and was soon escorted into the presence of Mr. John Smith. "Ah, Mr. Goblenski; Spots, isn't it? Hope you had a good flight. Lovely weather we are having. Just make yourself comfortable over there, Spots." Smith seemed cordial and Spots slipped comfortably into the interview. He had always thought that management consultants were evolved from the "efficiency experts" made famous by the radio team, Amos and Andy. He associated the modern version with computers, PERT and other systems approaches. He was surprised that one of these firms was apparently acting as an employment agency. "Of course" continued Smith, "in evaluation of basic criteria of performance moduli, the human element enters, Spots, and that brings us to you." Spots sat up and focused his attention.

IT is well known that the so-called pure aluminum contains noticeable amounts of impurities, chiefly iron and silicon, and many investigators have studied the forms in which these impurities exist. Hanson and Archbutt1 state that iron exists in aluminum as FeAl3 and silicon as elementary Si. The solubility of FeAl3 in solid aluminum is practically zero, or at, least so small that the smallest trace of this compound is always visible as a separate constituent. Under the microscope an untrained eye can hardly distinguish, without etching, the two constituents FeAl3 and Si, but they can be differentiated by suitable etching reagents. Anderson2 also found the same results. At the same time, Merica, Waltenberg, and Freeman3 found a constituent of unknown composition. They found a small thermal effect, at 610° C., on the cooling curves of aluminum with small amounts of iron and silicon. The intensity of this effect increased with increasing silicon content, until an effect occured at 576° C. due to the eutectic between aluminum and silicon. The authors ascribed the effect at 610° C. to a compound, which they call "X constituent." It was thought to be a ternary compound containing iron and silicon and could be observed under the microscope as dark particles. Dix4 has published unetched photomicrographs of an aluminum with 0.51 per cent. iron, 0.99 per cent. silicon, and 0.32 per cent. copper that shows three constituents: the dark Si (black in the figure), the lighter FeAl3, which appears in half tone and crystallizes in needles, and a constituent of the same color as FeAl3 but of different crystal form, often resembling Chinese script. This last constituent, Dix thought, is a compound of Fe and Si; not the compound FeSi but a compound containing a relatively small amount of silicon. Therefore an alloy of aluminum, iron, and silicon (the copper should not be regarded in the following considerations) must contain the following four constituents: Al, FeAl3,
