1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stimulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as. large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past Chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active Sections to the, welfare of the Institute as a whole. 6. According to Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, requests for appropriations shall be signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Section. 7. Requests for appropriations must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by February 15 of the year for which they are desired.

A new permanent-magnet material has been developed with unusual mechanical as well as magnetic properties. Specimens that have been cast or subjected to a small amount of hot reduction by rolling or swaging may be machined, punched, tapped or drilled. The composition range of the alloys is 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. After being either quenched, annealed or given the usual cold finishing passes and then heated for 2 hr. at 600°C., such materials have a magnetic energy product of 1.0 X 106 gauss-oersteds. This product is equivalent to that of the well-known Honda steel (36 per cent Co, 4W, 2 Cr, 0.8 C. 0.3 Mn, balance Fe). Material handled in the manner just described does not depend on cold-working for its magnetic properties, and is known as Vicalloy I. The preferred composition for Vicalloy I is 38.5 per cent iron, 52 per cent cobalt and 9.5 per cent vanadium. When the alloys are first hot-worked, then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or groove rolling and then heat-treated, the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension is increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X 106 gauss-oersteds. These higher values have been obtained only after cold reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent. Material handled in this manner is known as Vicalloy II and the preferred composi-

JOHNSON, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I hope that this contribution of Mr. Washburne's is only the first of a series dealing more in detail with the very important problems involved. Pores are of two kinds: Those which are entirely inclosed, so that they do not belong to a system of communicating pores tapped by the bore hole or shot hole; second, those which do so communicate. Porosity, of course, includes both. But since pores of the first class are valueless to us, we should confine our attention to the latter, for which I propose the term "effective porosity." This should be measured by the Wisconsin method, based on the quantity of fluid that can be introduced by the aid of vacuum. Another factor which requires attention in this connection is the dependence of the extractability upon the rate of loss of pressure, as affected by the number of holes, and the rapidity of their completion, the existence of uncontrolled wells, the use by other operators of vacuum pumps upon the casing head, the exhaustion of a gas field in the same reservoir prior to the discovery of the oil, etc. The extractability depends upon the pressure available for the exclusion of the oil from the reservoir into the hole. The action of gravity in bringing oil into the hole is relatively small where the pores are very small, as is so frequently the case.

Reginald S. Dean (Manganese Extraction by Carbamate Solutions and the Chemistry of New Manganese-Ammonia Complexes, P. 55) was born in Rolla, Mo. and attended the Missouri School of Mines. Mr. Dean has worked as metallurgist with Western Electric Co. from 1920 to 1929 and with U. S. Bureau of Mines from 1929 to 1946 as chief metallurgist and assistant director, and has been a metallurgical consultant in Washington, D. C. since 1946. An AIME member, Mr. Dean has presented at least 50 papers before the society. Mr. Dean is a member of American Society of Metals, American Chemical Society and Electrochemical Society. C. O. Dale (Illinois Operations of the Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co., co-author with W. J. Rundel, P. 72) was born in Twin Bridges, Mont. and attended Montana School of Mines and received his B.S. in mining engineering in 1944. Mr. Dale was with U. S. Navy Air Corps. as an electronics technician and worked as an engineer with C. O. Dale & Sons, Anaconda Copper Mining Co. and with Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. At present he is Wisconsin manager of Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. The application of machinery to mining is of special interest to Mr. Dale. A member of AIME, Mr. Dale is on the Room and Pillar or Stope and Pillar Committee of Mining Subdivision for 1951 to 1952. Mr. Dale is a member of Montana Society of Engineers and Lions Club. Golfing, fishing and wood working are his hobbies.

The ores of zinc which are important as sources of that metal are of two classes, viz., the sulphide and the oxidized. The latter includes six varieties: zincite (the red oxide) and franklinite (the oxide of zinc, iron, and manganese), which are found abundantly only in New Jersey; and the hydrous and anhydrous carbonates, the hydrous and anhydrous silicates, which are of widespread occurrence. The hydrous carbonate is known mineralogically as hydrozincite, zinconise, or zinc-bloom; the anhydrous silicate is recognized as willemite. With respect to the anhydrous carbonate and the hydrous silicate, however, there is a confusion of name which is of old standing. Attempts to clear it away were long ago made by the mineralogists with the result that there is now a more or less national uniformity of nomenclature; but there is still an international disagreement, sometimes very perplexing and always leading to inexactness in expression, which may be considered an adequate excuse for this return to a time-worn subject. The name calamine, together with Galmei of the Germans, is commonly supposed to be derived from xadµela, which was used by the Greeks to designate the peculiar kind of ore employed with copper in their brass-making, and also the accretions which formed in the brass-founder's furnaces. Agricola, however, says that it is from calamm, a reed, in allusion to the appearance of the material, cadmia fornacum, which collected 011 the furnace-walls. But whatever the derivation of the word, it was used until within one hundred years to include all the oxidized

The papers and discussion appearing in this volume were presented at a symposium jointly sponsored by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and held at Philadelphia, Pa., November 29, 30, and December 1, 1944. Late in January, 1944, Lieut. Col. C. H. Greenall, Officer-in-Charge of the Laboratory Division, Frankford Arsenal, Ordnance Department, U.S.A., suggested to the American Society for Testing Materials that it might be a propitious time to arrange for a symposium on stress-corrosion cracking at the Annual Meeting of the Society in June, and agreed to make available a number of papers relating to work being carried out at that Arsenal. The Society's Committee B-5 on Copper and Copper Alloys, Cast and Wrought expressed keen interest in the symposium, and other Society committees were contacted and agreed to cooperate. Since the subject is one of primary interest also to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, it was arranged that the two organizations would jointly sponsor the symposium. A Symposium Committee was formed under the joint leadership, for A.S.T.M., of Carter S. Cole, then Chief of the Metals Branch, Conservation Division, War Production Board and now Engineer on the Headquarters Staff of the Society; and, for A.I.M.E., of E. A. Anderson, Chief of Metals Section, Research Division, New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) and chairman of the Program Committee of the Institute of Metals Division. DURING the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was clone, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the alit was not known. It seemed imperative to get the tunnel work completed as rapidly as possible, in

GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The Escalante silver deposit located in southwestern Utah is an epithermal vein system consisting of a hanging wall and footwall vein, straight along strike and dipping about 1.2 rad (70°). The veins consist of banded quartz and calcite fissure fillings between volcanic wall rock that are silicified for some distance outward from the vein. The walls of the veins are sharp and the silver values are irratically distributed through the various bands within the vein. Only very low grade values are to be found in the wall rock on either side. The portion of the veins above the water table have been somewhat leached, with some secondary enrichment below. The mineralogical zonation is variable due to a fluctuating water table through geologic time. SAMPLE MANAGEMENT AND COMPOSITE ASSAYS Sample data for the deposit was obtained from over 50 diamond drill holes, from channel samples cut at intervals across a drift, and from scattered surface trenches along the out- crop of the hanging wall vein. Fig. 13-1 is a surface plan map showing the vein outcrop and some diamond drill locations. Two cross sections through the vein are shown in Figs. 1 3-2 and 13-3. Nearly all of the diamond drill core of vein material was assayed in 0.3-m (I-ft) lengths, from which weighted composite assays were manually calculated for the horizontal thickness of the vein. (communication to the Secretary*). -I hesitate to discuss in general terms a paper such as Mr. Wysor's, which bears evidence of so much careful and detailed investigation, yet it is the broad possibilities which his paper presents that are really attractive and his cautious conservatism may make us unappreciative of these possibilities. Mr. Wysor calls attention to the fact that the iron-ore mixture which he uses, carrying 0.28 per cent. of potash, is probably above the average. No doubt this is true, but on the other hand it may be very much less than the mixture at some blast furnaces or very much less than would be the case with special mixtures bearing the question of potash in mind. Unfortunately, iron ores are not ordinarily examined for potash, and with the ordinary analyst there is opportunity for very considerable error in the determination. The 10th Census gives 270 complete analyses of iron ore, on the accuracy of which we may rely. Of these, there are 21, or 8 per cent., that carry more potash than Mr. Wysor's mixture; 14 of these carry approximately twice as much, or more; eight carry approximately three times as much, or more; three carry approximately five times as much; one carries over seven times as much. It may be worth while to take some of the ores that are known to be high in potash and consider the possibilities in the light of Mr. Wysor's investigations.

I TOLD you above that you should save the melted material that you extracted by smelting the ore. In substance this is copper, lead, silver, and perhaps gold, but all are like substances mixed in one body without any distinction. Now if you wish to separate these and to reduce them to their pure qualities, it is necessary to proceed with each one according to its own methods. Now in this method of separating lead in order to extract the silver and gold from the copper, it is necessary to return to the smelting and to follow one of two methods.* The first is to smelt it again with the addition of lead or lead ore, and to make it all run through the channel into the large forehearth that was made in front of the blast furnace, and, as it cools off, proceed to remove layer by layer with the fork, as I told you before and as you did the first time, until the work lead is reached. Then you assay what you have extracted and see whether it contains silver. If you consider that it has enough per hundred to justify the expense, return it again to the smelting. Continue to do this until you have extracted all the unctuousness and the work lead still remains. If it contains little or no silver, you must be satisfied with your work; otherwise return it again to smelt, always accompanying it with lead or galena and do as you did the other times until it

In any process wherein materials must be pelletized, a crucial period exists during the interval between the manufacture of the green pellets and their subsequent heat treatment. The pellets must possess sufficient strength and plasticity to withstand conveying and sizing. Also, they must be neither excessively brittle nor excessively plastic when placed in a bed on a traveling grate for heat treatment. An acceptable pellet, in the event sufficient forces are applied to cause its fracture, will merely split into two or three large fragments which would not drastically alter the permeability of the pellet bed. However, when brittle pellets are broken, they shatter so that the resultant fine particles either decrease the perimeability of the bed or become entrained in the gas stream and thereby cause dust problems. On the other hand, excessively plastic pellets may not break at all but may merely flatten. This would seriously hamper bed permeability. In the past, pellet evaluation has usually been left to the creative and artistic talents of the balling operators. A multitude of techniques have evolved, of which the most common is the simple compression test. For this test a hand-operated device loads single pellets to fracture, but reliability is strictly operator- dependent. Probably the next most common test is the drop test, which is conducted according to several different procedures. This is an important quantitative test for estimating the amount of handling a pellet will withstand. There are many other tests, such as pinching a pellet between the thumb and index finger, but none are capable of producing reproducible results.

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders % in. long. (written discussion?).-In this exposition of experimental data, the author infers, indirectly at least, that by the Charpy test information was obtained that led to the improve-ment of certain ordnance parts and that this improvement could not have been attained without the Charpy test. On examination of the data, however, it appears that the important point of the whole matter was that while the material had been accepted from the results of longitudinal tensile tests, it was really transverse ductility that was desired. The writer has no desire to attempt to detract from the value of the paper or to discredit the Charpy test in any way, but he would like to ask the author if he will not give more clearly his reasons for preferring the Charpy impact test for investigational and control work of this kind, over the more usual tensile test made in a transverse direction. The tensile test pieces are more cheaply made than the square notched impact bars; and from the former the limit of elasticity and the ultimate strength as well as, the ductility are obtained, while in the Charpy test only one property is measured. It does not seem that the author has shown a sufficient reason for favoring the latter test, when both it and the trans-verse tensile test served his purpose equally well in indicating the proper metal and treatment required for his special forging, and it is hoped that this reason will be given more clearly as a matter of useful general information.

If the miscibility gap meets the composition of the pure components THE recent theoretical treatment by cahn1,2 on spinodal decomposition of solid solutions has revived interest in methods of estimating the chemical spinodal, * i.e., the locus on a binary phase By use of the appropriate expression, the spinodal can be drawn on the Phase diagram almost by inspection with an accuracy comparable to that of lengthy calculations in which a free-energy function is fitted to the phase diagram. The metallurgical history of Republic has been completely reviewed in a paper presented at a previous meeting of the Spokane Local Section by Professor Thomson;' therefore, the present paper will be confined to matters directly pertaining to the San Poil mill: When I came to Republic last fall to look over the situation there was a plant in operation successfully treating the tailings from one of the earlier mills in the camp. I refer to the mill of the Rathfon Reduction Co. This mill was operating in accordance with modern cyaniding practice, and I was given to understand that the work was very satisfactory and profitable, else it would not have been continued as long as it was. At that time I obtained much metallurgical information of value from Harry W. Newton, Superintendent of the mill of the North Washington Power & Reduction Co. I took a number of samples from the San Poil mine, with the view of determining if Mr. Newton's experience with the ores from the other mines applied to the San Poil ores. I made a large number of tests under a variety of conditions, and found that it was possible to extract as high as 98 per cent, of the values from San Poil ore by the laboratory-tests when the ore was pulverized to 200-mesh and treated with a solution of a strength of 5 Ib. of KCN to the ton. IN most instances the fluids produced from underground reservoirs have been described as they appear at the surface, and usually it has not been necessary to distinguish between surface and reservoir phases. More recently it has become imperative to recognize the fact that changes in phase may occur between the reservoir and the receiving unit. The simple terminology of "wet" and "dry" gases and "crude petro-leum oil" served our needs fairly well in the shallow, low-temperature and low-pressure fields. It has been left to the legislatures, regulatory com-missions, and courts to decide whether a field is or was a gas field, an oil field, or both. This they have done by direct definition and also by implication. For example, in Texas:1 (d) The term "gas well" is any well (a) which produces natural gas not associated or blended with crude petroleum oil at the time of production, or (b) which produces more than one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural, gas to each barrel of crude petroleum oil from the same producing horizon, or (c) which produces natural gas from a formation or producing horizon productive of gas only encountered in a well bore through which crude petroleum oil is also produced through the inside of another string of casing. (e) The term "oil well" is any well which produces one (1) barrel or more of crude petroleum oil to each one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas.

INTRODUCTION Creep of rock in situ, like most rock mass behavior, will be largely governed by the behavior of the natural discontinuities -- bedding planes, faults, and joints, in particular, Several past studies have investigated various aspects of the time-dependent deformation of rock discontinuities; examples include Amadei and Curran (1980), Engelder and Scholz (1976), Johnson (1975), Kaiser and Morgenstern (1979), Solberg et al. (1978), and Wawersik (1974). These studies have provided much insight into the general phenomenon, but they have also produced some inconsistent conclusions and left many unanswered questions. This paper will attempt to shed some light on one of these questions: What is the influence of stress level on the creep of unfilled rock joints? The discussion will follow a two-part approach to the problem: (1) laboratory creep experiments on small scale jointed specimens, (2) a simple theoretical mechanism to explain, at least in qualitative terms, some of the results from the experimental program. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Uniaxial creep tests were conducted on intact and jointed samples of a specially formulated gypsum plaster "synthetic rock." Synthetic rock materials have several advantages over natural rock for long-term creep testing: (a) higher creep rates, (b) lower strength and therefore lower loading requirements, (c) simpler specimen preparation, and (d) more controlled and consistent properties. Gypsum based plasters have been used previously in studies of short-term strength and deformability of jointed samples (Patton, 1966; Einstein and Hirschfeld, 1973). Furthermore, Williams and Elizzi (1977) demonstrated that natural gypsum, at least, creeps in a manner similar to that of most other creep-susceptible natural rocks.

SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content, it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodu-mene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manga-nese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li2O on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, ? the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2,3 The methods described in the second publication' did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted.

By hydrometamorphism is meant the alteration of rocks, ores and minerals by atmospheric waters. In its broadest sense, it includes the varied processes of weathering, oxidation, hydration, the leaching of rocks and ores, and the solution, migration and enrichment of metals. Rain water, as it strikes the earth, is practically pure water, except for small quantities of dissolved atmospheric gases; upon coming in contact with ore minerals, especially sulphides, however, it is transformed into solutions of great chemical activity, which attack, transform and rearrange the minerals of ore- bodies, and so effect enrichments of the greatest economic importance. Primary deposits so low in grade as to be without commercial value are frequently thus transformed into deposits of commercial importance. It is necessary in the examination of any orebody, therefore, to determine whether the valuable ore is of primary or of secondary origin; if primary, its value may be expected to continue indefinitely in depth to the zone of primary impoverishment; if secondary, the ore deposition is known to be controlled by surface agencies, and the valuable ore may be expected to continue to such depths only as have been reached by surface waters. The decomposition and weathering of rocks, unlike the changes undergone by orebodies, are accomplished by water carrying as dissolved constituents chiefly atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide, together with vegetable acids. The chemical changes wrought are principally hydration, oxidation and the formation of carbonates. The tendency is toward the solution of the more easily dissolved minerals, which is attended by the formation and a surface concentration of the more resistant minerals,
