Centrally located with relation to the largest iron- and steel-producing districts of the United States, the fluorspar-deposits of Kentucky possess increasing interest and importance. As typical of the numerous fluorspar-mines of Kentucky and Illinois, I have selected for description the Memphis, because it and others of its immediate group exhibit the conditions characteristic of all. I. The Memphis MiNe. This mine lies 5 miles NW. of Marion, in Crittenden county, Kentucky, a station on the Chicago and Nashville division of .the Illinois Central R. R. For the first mile and a half out of Marion we see only Birdsville or Middle Chester sandstones of Mississippian age. Then we cross a fault of about 850 ft. displacement, and the Ste. Genevieve oolite sets in. Beyond the fault, oolite is the predominant rock, except that the hills to the north have a capping of Cypress or lowest Chester sandstone, 80 ft. below which is an outcrop of from 6 to 10 ft. of Ste. Genevieve (Rosiclare) sandstone. Occasional sink-holes are noticed, and as the mines are approached evidence of faulting is again seen. A line of .crude head-frames and open-cut dumps, extending for more than a quarter of a mile, marks the Klondike vein. The open-cuts are from 15 to 20 ft. deep, and in most of them, from the surface down, was found the reddish gravel which is really fluorspar—some of it white or purple and crystal-clear (if the red clay is washed off), and some carrying iron and silica, and stained by waters from the decaying limestone walls. In one of these cuts, at a depth of 20 ft., white and purplish honey-combed fluorspar was found, in which the larger cavities are due to the leaching of limestone and calcite, and the minute ones to the leaching of zinc-hlende.

Virginia, a store-house of metals, is more and more a surprise to the present generation. With her enormous available mineral wealth, worked upon steadily for over a century, exploited SUEciently to demonstrate beyond question costs and values, reported upon by our most eminent scientists, written up by thoroughly earnest correspondents, we yet find her little understood by capitalists or practical men, and until very lately overlooked by the advanceguard of pioneers in metallurgy, whose restless energy conquered the wilderness of Northern Michigan years ago, and has written a new and startling history for almost impenetrable Western territories. The world is learning through the mouths of giant furnaces lately put in blast at Lowmoor, Goshen, and Roanoke, more of this wondcrful State. It is becoming plain that nearer home, amid all the surroundings of civilization, under an equable climate and with the advantage of a minimum cost for fuel and labor, there are stores of mineral, varied in character and deposited over a wide area, which exceed all ordinary calcnlations. Principal among these minerals, iron ores have been, and will probably continue to be, the leading product and the source of greatest revenue. My attention has been called during the past year to one particular section of the iron-belt, where for forty years charcoal-furnaces were successfully operated, the ores being mined in open pits, as can so frequently be seen from the Connecticut line southward into Georgia. There is, however, a significant peculiarity in the character of these deposits of Louisa county warranting special mention, as it is thought that nowhere on the earth's surface, within so moderate a distance of tidewater, can their like be fouad. The application of scientific methods to the investigation of natural laws and to the conduct of the useful arts which are founded upon them, is year by year mitigating the asperity and enlarging the outcome of human endeavor. More notably, perhaps, are these the facts in that system of productive and constructive arts of which engineering is the general name. In metallurgical engineering especially, within the period of our own recollection, how rapid has been the rate and how wide the scope of progress: the scientific discovery and mining of metalliferous veins; the economical separation and reduction of ores of every grade; the production and regulation of high temperatures; the varied improvements in the manufacture of iron, in saved heat and work, in uniformity and range of products; and, most important of all, the creation and the utilization, to be counted by the million tons a year, of the cheap constructive steels. Wonderful as this range and degree of development may appear to the public eye, the close and thoughtful observer must, nevertheless, conclude that neither the profession nor the craft of engineering may congratulate themselves too complaisantly, but that they should rather acknowledge to each other the embarrassing incompleteness of the union between engineering science and art. There is a small school of philosophers whom we may designate as original investigators, men who come close to nature, who search into first principles, and who follow that scientific and therefore fruitful method by which the relations of matter and force are discovered, classified, and brought within the reach of practice. These wonderful men do not indeed create the laws of nature, as they sometimes almost seem to, but they go up into the trembling mountain and the thick darkness and bring down the tables upon which they are written.

The failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement; therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable, easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem involves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,' which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements can be made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard mortars. THE binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of comprehensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean' and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-Antimony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Tin These three systems are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. The anthracite coal trade, with a shipment averaging about 70,000,000 tons per year, differs essentially from other coal business, iii the fact that the larger sizes, comprising about 65 per cent. of the total, are used almost exclusively for domestic purposes, principally during the winter months; and that for proper combustion close-sizing is imperative, so that eight sizes are made; broken, egg, stove, and nut, known as prepared sizes, and pea, buckwheat, rice, and barley, known as steam sizes. These sizes are made in the regular course of preparation, and but little variation in the natural percentage of each is practicable. Thus it is necessary either to work the collieries intermittently, or to dispose of all the varying sizes in their fixed proportions. Unfortunately, the market does not at all times absorb the coal in proper proportions, and rather than interfere with the regular operation of the mines it has been found economical to provide storage for the excess. While the cellars of' the consumers are the great storage-plants of the country, this capacity is not under the control of the trade, except so far as reduced prices during the spring and summer months may tempt the use of this reserve. The same remark applies but with less force to the retail yards, which, though usually small, store in the aggregate a large amount of anthracite. While every effort is made to utilize to the utmost the individual storage-capacity of the country, there still remains the necessity for taking care of the irregularities of the market by the construction of storage-plants under the direct control of the producers. Such plants are usually the property of the railroads, and are situated at points most convenient from a traffic stand-point.

SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content. it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodumene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manganese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li20 on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, [t] the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2, 3 The methods described in the second publication3 did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted. (written discussion *).-Mr. Stone refers to cadmium as one of the worst impurities in ores used for the production of zinc oxide for pigment purposes, because it is very volatile and its dark brown oxide and bright yellow sulphide both have strong coloring powers so that small fractions of 1 percent. injure the whiteness of the oxide. Numerous tests have recently been made by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. to determine what effect the percentage of cadmium, as ordinarily present in zinc ores, has upon the color of oxide made from such ores by the usual grate-furnace process. It has been found that while the cadmium is readily volatile and may be detected in the oxide product by chemical analysis, the oxide product is not discolored, but is of a clear white color. Analysis of the 12 leading brands of zinc oxide, French process, lead-free, and leaded grades now on the market for pigment purposes, show them to contain from 0.02 to 0.35 per cent. cadmium, figured as metal. If these proportions of cadmium were present as oxide or sulphide, the percentages would run from approximately 0.022 to 0.40 per cent. in the first case and 0.025 to 0.45 per cent in the latter case. All these grades of oxide are widely used for pigment purposes and are of a clear white color, except the leaded grades, the whiteness of which may be diminished by the lead sulphate. (Read at Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) AT the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " buckshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separated from the mass, they could be flattened under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it contained much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surface, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure was applied ; but enough was obtained to undertake quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions-one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results :

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1878.) As the forms of blown-out furnaces are of much interest to iron-masters and metallurgists, the manner of taking the accompanying sections of the Cedar Point stack is here given. The diagrams show the original and also the final shape of the furnace after a two years and twelve days' blast, during which the following solid materials passed through it, viz.: Coal, 41,000 tons; ore, 57,000 tons ; limestone, 30,000; total, 128,000 gross tons. Product, 41 1/4 tons per day Bessemer pig iron. The apparatus used in taking the sections was a modification of that proposed by Mr. Frank Firmstone,* and consisted of a sliding rule, to follow around the circumference of the stack, which rule was connected by a string to a segment of a circle of 24 inches radius. The segment was carried by an arm which connected it to a hub as a centre, 2 inches in diameter. A second string was wound around the hub, and communicated motion to a pencil-carrier, the pencil of which marked out on paper the exact outline, and reduced it to a scale of 1/2 inch to the foot. The whole machine was made in about three hours, with the facilities of a carpenter's shop, and gave in operation every irregularity of the lining. The sections were taken at salient points, by lowering a hanging staging on which the apparatus was placed. Tracings from the paper of the machine were made, and, as in this case several copies were required, the tracings were glued on to thin sheets of basswood, and patterns carefully sawed out with a bracket saw. * Transactions, vol. iii, p. 106.

As stated in the preface, the nomenclature to be adopted for weights and measures has presented great difficulty. Agricola uses, throughout, the Roman and the Romanized Greek scales, but in many cases he uses these terms merely as lingual equivalents for the .German quantities of his day. Moreover the classic language sometimes failed him, whereupon he coined new Latin terms adapted from the Roman scale, and thus added further confusion. We can, perhaps, make the matter dearer by an illustration of a case in weights. The Roman centumpondium, composed of zoo librae, the old German ceniner of 100 pfundt, and the English hundredweight of 1112 pounds can be called lingual equivalents. The first weighs about 494,600 Troy grains, the second 721,900, and the third 784,000. While the divisions of the centumpondium and the centner are the same, the Libra is divided into 12 unciae and the pfundt into 16 unizen, and in most places a summation of the units given proves that the author had in mind the Roman ratios. However, on p. 509 he makes the direct statement that the centumpondium weighs 146 librae, which would be about the correct weight if the centumpondium referred to was a ceniner. If we take an example such as " each centumpondium of lead contains one uncia of silver", and reduce it according to purely lingual equivalents, we should find that it runs 24.3 Troy ounces per short ton, on the basis of Roman values, and 18.25 ounces per short ton, on the basis of old German. If we were to translate these into English lingual equivalents of one ounce per hundredweight, then the value would be 17.9 ounces per short ton. [ ]

BECAUSE it is necessary that the powders made for casting have a magistery of salt water, I wish now to teach you to prepare the salt that must form this magistery, for without it these powders would not have the toughness to hold themselves together when they are dry. In short, you take the quantity [119v] of salt that you need to prepare and put it in a rough pot, either baked or, if it suits you better, raw but well dried. This is completely covered with a lid or is luted with well- made moulding clay. Then it is encircled with brick ends at a distance of three dita, like a drying furnace. This space is filled with good charcoal; fire is applied and it is left to stand until all the charcoal is consumed by itself* Then you take that quantity of this burned or rather melted salt which you wish to use for moistening the clay and which you think can be dissolved in the water so that it wd remain very salty. It is boiled in a pot with water and then left to stand. After it has settled, your powder is moistened with it and used for moulding. When you see by testing it that the powder stands up as you wish, it is good. If not, give it some more of this water again and continue until you see that it holds enough. For without this magistery it would return to the dryness that it had before as a powder, and you could not use it without fear that it would fall from the Games. In this way this earth, either natural or artificial, is prepared and made ready, and it is used as the need occurs.

Diversion of the American Falls of Niagara to permit investigation of ways and means to stabilize the falls while retaining or improving its natrual attractiveness is the geoengineering work that has received greatest public attention this year. The falls are re- treating slowly as rock falls occur while talus de- posits at the base have increased in size. One of the noteworthy questions is whether the talus should be removed-i.e. is it providing support to the base, and so what will happen if it is removed? Certainly the appearance would be improved if the talus were taken away. Geoengineering studies involve mapping of joints, stress measurements, core work and rock sampling and testing, Present work will provide data and interpretation for design of a long term stabilization system, Once basic information is obtained, water will be returned to the normal channel until such time as the detailed design is decided upon. The falls will then be diverted a second time while necessary work is performed. A number of site-environmental studies were carried out for the location of nuclear power plants. These projects involve geology, foundation engineering, hydrology, seismology, meteorlogy, marine geology (in some cases), rock mechanics and occasionally blast monitoring. In one case (investigated by Dames & Moore) the site area was underlain by caverns in limestones at shallow depths but with no surface expression. The geotechnical problems consisted of determining proper spacing of drill holes to locate caverns. Spacing was dependent on the smallest size of cavity that could constitute a support-stability problem for the plant. The finite element method of analysis was used to determine stress conditions around cavities of various size and depths, to assist in determining critical parameters.

Russia's first "Petaletka'' has ended. Technically it did not succeed but practically it has been a great achievement in the petroleum industry. Out of the chaos of revolution and civil war Russia has developed her oil industry to second place in the world's production. For 1932 production of crude oil is estimated at 150,000,000 bbl. and refined products at 145,000,000 barrels. Russia has been able to give the petroleum industry every advantage that a government can extend to a fast growing industry. She has obtained all of her property by confiscation. Under government ownership, operation and control, her petroleum industry is not handicapped in any way by state rulings or by unnecessary competition in production, refining and marketing. There are no damage suits resulting from offsetting, flooding, repressuring, laying of pipe lines, building of docks or other necessary work. Russian oil fields2 have been easy to develop and operate. They lie advantageously to transportation for foreign markets. The chief disadvantages have been a lack of credit and technical cooperation, but the former is being overcome by the sacrifice of the people. They go without the comforts of life that all salable articles may be exported for the imports of modern machinery. Modern machinery is fast replacing the obsolete and worn-out equipment. Technical cooperation has been difficult because it has been necessary to train thousands of adults to do technical and mechanical work. Great quantities of pipe, tools and electrical equipment were necessary for the rapidly developing fields and refineries. The supplies have been inadequate and the quality poor. This lack of equipment, along with the untrained technical supervision, has been the cause of the proposed quota falling short. Fig. 1 shows the production for 1931 and 1932. During 1932 a large percentage of the oil was produced in the proven fields of the Caucasus.

Dispersion-strengthened aluminum products consist of an aluminum matrix containing finely distributed ceramic or intermetallic particles. Examples of the two types of product are SAP, in which the dispersed phase is aluminum oxide, and materials made from atomized aluminum alloy powder, in which the dispersed phase can be FeA1, particles.' A fundamental difference between the two types of product is that the elongation of aluminum/aluminum oxide products decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the elongation of aluminum- FeA13 products, like that of aluminum alloys, increases with increasing temperature. As regards the structural stability, aluminum/aluminum oxide products are stable to temperatures above 600° C as aluminum oxide does not react with aluminum, whereas prolonged heating at above 400°C of aluminum-FeA1, products leads to coarsening of the intermetallic phase and loss of strength.' On the basis of these results it is supposed that a dispersion-strengthened product combining strength, ductility, and stability at elevated temperatures may be obtained if the dispersed phase reacts with the matrix in such a way that the reaction does not proceed at any significant rate at the application temperature. Different ceramic or intermetallic compounds may be selected as the dispersed phase, and, as alloying of the matrix phase may also influence the reaction, many possibilities exist for each metal. In the present study, aluminum products containing different oxides have been examined. For a reaction to take place between the dispersed oxide and the aluminum the free energy of formation of the oxide (MeO) must be greater than that of aluminum oxide; the difference should, however, not be too great in order to limit the reaction rate. PHOSPHORUS combines with copper in various proportions, forming true alloys, some of which are of commercial importance. These materials find wide application as deoxidizers and as a means of introducing phosphorus into other alloys, as in phosphor-bronze. Phosphor-coppers containing 10 and 15 per cent. of phosphorus are the commercial grades that are most generally offered. Each has certain advantages when used in making other alloys. The 10 per cent. grade of phosphor-copper has an advantage over the 15 per cent. in that it has a much lower melting point and can be prepared by certain methods with a much lower loss in phosphorus. The 15 per cent. grade has the advantage of lower freight rates per unit of phosphorus and, by the method to be described, a uniform product can be prepared with practically no loss of phosphorus. Alloys of copper and phosphorus containing any desired percentage of phosphorus lower than 15 per cent. can be prepared by melting together the requisite amounts of copper and 15 per cent. phosphor-copper. Processes for making phosphor-copper may be divided into two classes as follows: (1) Those depending on the smelting of phosphate rock or superphosphate of calcium with copper or copper-bearing materials, and coal or other carbonaceous material; (2) those depending on the direct combination of metallic copper and elemental phosphorus. A number of formulas for preparing phosphor-copper according to the first method have been published. The Metal, Industry' gives-the following: Superphosphate of calcium, 60 lb.; granulated copper, 301b.; finely powdered coal, 10 lb. Similar formulas are given by Brannt2 and others, and detail 'variations are covered by patents, such as those of L A Jeffs3 and H A Webster.4

ZAY JEFFRIES (author's reply to discussion *).-Messrs. Merica's and Humfrey's criticisms of some of my conclusions are rendered in the true scientific spirit by means of which differences of opinion are gradually smoothed out and all participants are benefited. It is true that the statement of generalizations on such a complex subject is hazardous, but I shall endeavor to point out the explanations for the discrepancies noted. Owing to the fact that I am now submitting a long paper on the same general subject to the Institute, my present remarks will be brief. Dr. Meric&s Assumptions' I agree with No. 1 and No. 2, with the modification that the A (amorphous) metal between grains of annealed metal has substantially the same properties as that at slip planes in deformed metal, but the two have different arrangements with reference to C (crystalline) metal and they may be in different conditions as regards internal stress, thickness, and nature of contact with C metal. Assumption 3.-I believe Fig. 1 is wrong. I know of no evidence to substantiate the curves. I believe cc (elongation of C phase) = 0 (approximately) at all temperatures and ?A (elongation of A phase) has finite values at elevated temperatures only; but these play no important direct role in the ordinary deformation of metals at low temperatures. I believe Ec (elastic limit of C phase) = Tc (tensile strength of C phase) because as soon as C metal begins to deform permanently it would rupture were it not for the A metal generated by its breakdown. We know that Ec = Tc in brittle crystals and a crystal cannot be permanently deformed without generation of A metal. Therefore Dr. Merica's

Discussion of Papers. Meetings of the Institute offer opportunity for social acquaintance and exchange of ideas, for the presentation of papers, and for discussions thereon ; also incidentally for viewing under especially favorable conditions mining operations and industrial establishments, and for hospitals-ties which demonstrate the brotherhood due to kindred interests. Placing sociability prominent is not to be assumed as relegating other features of meetings to subordinate positions; but during about 40 years of membership in the Institute, the value of acquaintances formed (often ripening into close friendship), and the interchange of data, have frequently demonstrated that the social feature of meetings is of great and lasting value to the membership. Of' a roll embracing 4,011 members, resident in all parts of our country, and scattered in various portions of the world, only a small fraction are able to attend meetings, even if the localities selected are alternately widely separated. Hence, the return which most -members receive for their annual assessment of dues is limited to the publications issued, and the credit of being recognized as a member of a great and worthy organization. Tile greater the value of tile contents of our publication, the fuller the return which goes to members. While the Institute disavows responsibility for views or statements made in papers which appear in its Transactions, the fact that these contributions, after passing proper censorship, are accepted by the Institute and spread before the world may properly be received by the writers as endorsements of their (the writers') ability to present a specific technical or industrial proposition worthy of being carefully read. But the mere presentation and publication of contributed papers falls short of fulfilling one important feature of our meetings. If the purpose is confined to having the writers' views, discoveries, theories, or methods published, this can be obtained through the technical or trade journals and magazines.
