The mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. IIO W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3 NaHCo3.2H2O). Pure trona con-tains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. Analyses Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells† and found to be exceptionally Pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nighten-gale‡ for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO 3.2 CaCO3), which he named shortite,² after Maxwell N. Short." He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. In addition to the 10 ft. 1 in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either i mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating | reserves. In the part of the core between i 1590 ft. 3 in. and 1600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically I to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. Lieutenant Gorman was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1888, and after preliminary education at Ottawa University and the Ottawa Collegiate Institute, he graduated from McGill University in 1913, as a mining engineer. After graduation, Mr. Gorman spent several months in a tour of Europe. The year 1909 was occupied at one of the Canadian graphite mines, and the summer of 1911 he spent with the Granby Mining, Smelting & Power Co., Ltd. At the time of his admission to the Institute, in 1914, he was sampler with the Dome mines at South Porcupine, Ontario. His next engagement was at the Creighton mine, Ontario, but in 1916 he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and went to England. A letter written by Major Ritchie, commanding the Second Tunnelling Company, to Lieut. Gorman's mother, contains the following words. Tommy was lulled at our headquarters by a nine-inch shell which struck the officers' quarters. The Hun had been shelling a small village close to the camp with a long-range gun and a shot fell into our camp. Tom was killed instantly by the concussion. He mas buried this morning with Military Honours in the military cemetery close to our camp. Tommy was an efficient officer and a good soldier and his loss is very keenly felt by the officers and men of this unit. Lieutenant William Hague William Hague, First Lieutenant Co. F, 116th Regiment of Engineers, and a member of the Institute since 1906, died of pneumonia in France, on Jan. 1, 1918. Lieutenant Hague was born in Orange, N. J., Mar. 31, 1882, the son of the late James D. Hague, a distinguished mining engineer and a life member of the Institute, and Mary Ward (Foote) Hague, of Guilford, Conn. He attended Milton Academy, Milton, Mass., and was graduated from Harvard in the class of 1904. He was a nephew of the late Arnold Hague, of the United States Geological Survey. Seven years ago he married Elizabeth Stone, of Milton, who with their son, James D. Hague, six years old, survives him. Lieutenant Hague's mining career began immediately after his graduation from Harvard, when he went to Bisbee, Ariz., to be a surveyor's helper in the mines of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. In 1905, he became an instrument man, being engaged on the construction work of the Copper Queen smelting plant at Douglas, Ariz. ALL engineering education is faced by certain basic problems, three of which seem to have particular present importance in geological engineering training in general, and in respect to training for oil field geoexploratory work in particular. PROBLEM I The first of these problems has to do with present and future educational objectives and with the numbers and qualities of the men who should be coming out of our geoexploratory training programs. Before the war we needed ever-increasing numbers of graduates at the Bachelor's level and a very much smaller number of men who had reached the Doctorate degree. Now, with more difficult, more extensive, and more costly exploratory work; with a rapid expansion of company "staff" activities, and with the initiation of many new research organizations and laboratories; it is clear that men of exceptional ability will be more and more in demand, and that the schools will need to carry a greater proportion of their students through to the Ph.D. degree. PROBLEM 2 Assuming that the mineral industries will need an increasing supply of well-qualified Ph.D.s for future geoexploratory work (staff, line and research), can the schools expect to provide this supply of able Ph.D.s merely by expanding the proportion of B.S. and B.A. majors who go on through to the doctorate stage of training? And the answer is definitely "No "-as the situation stands at present. Most A.B. graduates are years short of the preparations in basic science and elementary engineering prerequisite to effective graduate study in the geoexploratory fields (paleontology excepted), and similarly many of the annual crop of B.S. graduates lack adequate training in English; in ancient and modern history; and in the modern principles of labor and public relations. Indeed, several basic problems of undergraduate curricular organization and integration remain to be solved before most recipients of a Bachelor's degree will have that sound and broad educational foundation prerequisite to graduate training on a really effective basis. It is for these reasons that we have continued to experiment with our geological engineering program at Princeton, in an endeavor to provide a pilot-plant demonstration of a suitably broad and flexible undergraduate curriculum. PROBLEM 3 But assuming that the schools can and do get undergraduate curricula set up in proper phase and scale to meet needed enrollment quotas for graduate training, what about the most urgent part of our whole mineral-industry educational problem? What about finding and bringing into mineral-industry training those youngsters of superior ability who are, by potential or known inclination, especially well-qualified for geoexploratory work?

THEN sufficient ore has been blocked out on a lease to warrant a shaft, the proposed. Location of the shaft should be carefully considered, as the old promoter's method of sinking wherever his hat landed is a sad mistake as some: of us have learned by trying to operate such mines. In some instances certain conditions exist, such as mill location, railroad right of way, etc., that necessitate a change of location from the. ideal, but under average conditions and with the knowledge of the formation gained from the drill logs and with the general trend of the orebody known, the shaft can be located from. the standpoint of its future relation to the mine with re-gard to hauling and' hoisting a maximum tonnage: at a minimum cost per ton, also taking into account the minimum amount of expense and trouble- in sinking. Quite a few shafts are located in the wall of a run or just in the thin edge of the orebody: As a general rule the formation here is solid and permits rapid and safe sinking, and the shaft pillars are left in practically valueless material. This permits the withdrawal of pillars and still keeps the shaft protected. By opening a shaft in thin ground, you are not tempted to cut it high, wide, and handsome, but to shape it up-with ample clearance for lay-bys and with more of an idea of permanency, as a few hundred extra dollars spent around the shafts for proper track installation will re-turn, a good rate of interest in ease of handling "cans," quick get-away; and fewer wrecks. Nearly all the shafts in this district are sunk on a contract basis, the con-tractors furnishing all labor and explosives, and the company building the sinking-derrick, dump-track, and furnishing, all equipment, material, and power. The following costs are the averages, for three shafts sunk through good solid formation, with no water to, contend with, and approximately 260 -ft., deep, having about-100 ft. of shale. The contract price was $9 per foot with the shale and $13 per foot in the solid, making a total of $2,980 paid to the contractor. The wages paid by the contractor were, $5 per shift for the hoist-man, who also sharpened steel, $6 for the lead shaft man, and $5 for the helper;, the cribbing was sawed on contract for 40c. per shaft: foot; about. 94 board feet. of cribbing was used per foot of staggered cribbing and 168 board feet per foot of solid cribbing.

Before the outbreak of the war in 1914, the only electric-furnace smelting plant operating on a commercial basis west of the Mississippi River was an electric pig-iron plant in California; rare metal ores were not smelted, concentrates of molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium ores being shipped east for reduction. Practically no- chrome ore was being mined, and only comparatively small amounts of manganese ore. Today there are two electric smelting plants in California, one in Washington, one in Iowa, and four in Colorado; two plants are under construction in California, and one in Montana. Ores of manganese, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten are now smelted in the West, and although uranium and vanadium concentrates are still shipped to the East, they will probably be treated in western plants in a short time. The activity in exploration and in the acquisition of prospective oil lands that reached such a high level in Colombia during 1936 gained momentum and reached unprecedented proportions during 1937. Both national and private lands were taken up. In the Magdalena Valley above Puerto Berrio, leases on large tracts of private lands are held by Richmond (Standard of California), Shell and Texas. Tropical also owns leases covering a block of acreage in this area near Honda. From Puerto Berrio to El Banco most of the acreage is of national ownership, and concessions covering parts of this area have been granted to Tropical, Socony Vacuum, Shell and others, while applications for additional concessions are pending. Latterly leases on private lands below the Lebrija River have been taken out by Shell and Richmond. In the drainage basins of the Meta and Guaviare Rivers of the Llanos region of eastern Colombia, several of the major companies have carried on geological exploration and it is understood that some private properties have been leased or optioned. Under Colombian law, subsoil rights are reserved to the nation on all lands that passed from Government ownership after Oct. 28, 1873. DURING the Revolutionary War an iron mining industry was born in the Adirondack region of New York State. New York State ores provided the iron from which were forged the links of the chain that, strung across the Hudson River, successfully kept British vessels from ascending. The industry flourished for a while and then became dormant. For the successful prosecution of World War II, the magnetite mines were revived and given considerable aid in the form of government financial support. The complete story appeared in a special issue Of MINING AND METALLURGY published in November 1943. Now, almost four years later, it is interesting to see that these "war babies" were not really such but are well-established enterprises with a bright future. A ten-day trip through the Adirondack region and to St. Lawrence County dispelled all thoughts that mining in northern New York State is a transitory industry. In addition to substan-

The fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion, based on all the data available, in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil-and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain ; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite, and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the same formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south, range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2525 ft. (769 m.). URANIUM ore was first discovered in the Edge-mont district of the southern Black Hills in the summer of 1951. The discovery was not made known for some time, but after the news leaked out prospecting became intense, and several hundred claims were staked in the spring of 1952. The Hot Springs Sub Office of the Atomic Energy Commission was established at that time and airborne radiometric surveys were commenced by the Government and by private companies. During the succeeding summer another important discovery was made by private airborne surveys in the northern Black Hills, and the area favorable for uranium ore was expanded many times. Between that summer of 1952 and the present, many individuals and groups have explored, developed, and exploited their claims until now uranium ore is produced in significant quantities and substantial reserves have been developed. The Black Hills portion of the geologic map of the U. S. issued by the U. S. Geological Survey is shown in Fig. 1. Sedimentary formations are exposed as a series of cuestas and hogbacks in a roughly annular pattern with the older sediments resting on the pre-Cambrian core, which is exposed in the eastern and southern portions of the dome. The South Dakota-Wyoming state line bisects the area from north to south. The Cheyenne River crosses the southern tip of the Black Hills and the Little Missouri bounds them roughly on the north. Headquarters of the AEC in the Black Hills is the Sub Office at Hot Springs, S. D. An ore buying station is located in Edgemont, 28 miles to the southwest, where a mill is presently under construction. The area of original uranium ore discovery and of principal activity in the southern Hills is a few miles north of Edgemont. Several areas of anomalous radioactivity have been noted between Dewey, S. D., and Newcastle, Wyo. A limited amount of ore has come from the Dewey area and private exploration is active there. The Carlile deposit, largest producing mine in the northern Black Hills to date, lies northwest of the Belle Fourche River near the western extremity of the Hills. Two of the larger known orebodies of the area are located near the Little Missouri River where a small window exposes the favorable strati-graphic horizon of the Fall River sandstone. Small production has recently come from Barlow Canyon, near Devils Tower, Wyo., Fig. 2, and numerous areas of anomalous radioactivity are known in the vicinity. THE current emphasis in preparing boron fibers by reduction of gaseous boron compounds on a resistively heated metal wire substrate has renewed interest in the borides of those metals which have relatively high melting points and are available as fine wires. A knowledge of the structures and properties of the borides, which are formed when boron diffuses into the metal core during boron deposition, can be of assistance in the understanding of the boron fiber formation process and the fiber properties. Many of these borides are well-known and their properties have been measured. However, when an unidentified boride is found in the core, it may be difficult to establish its composition because of the small amount of material available, the preferred orientation effects on the reflections in its X-ray pattern, and the possible overlap of X-ray reflections if several borides are present in the core. For example. the proper indexing of the X-ray pattern of WB4, which was formed in the tungsten substrate core during boron fiber formation, was accomplished only after small single crystals of this boride were grown and X-ray precession investigations were conducted.' This note presents the results of a study of the phases formed in the core when tungsten, tantalum, and molybdenum metal wires were used as substrates in the boron fiber preparation process with particular emphasis on the identification and characterization of a higher boride of molybdenum analogous to WB,. Boron was deposited on resistively heated stationary 0.0012-in.-diam tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum wires at 1050°C for various times up to 60 sec using boron trichloride and hydrogen as the reactant gases. After 60 sec of boron deposition the fibers were approximately 0.006 in. in diam. Examination of photomicrographs of fiber cross sections showed that the boron had diffused nearly to the center of the tungsten and molybdenum cores in 15 and 30 sec, respectively, and only halfway to the center of the tantalum core in 60 sec. X-ray diffraction photographs of the fibers indicated that it was also after 15 and 30 sec deposition times that the tungsten and molybdenum metal reflections, respectively, had disappeared from the X-ray patterns of the fibers. The patterns of the boron fibers produced using tantalum wire as a substrate showed that amorphous boron, TaB2, and tantalum metal were present after a few seconds deposition time and remained even after deposition times of 60 sec. Until a deposition time of 15 sec was reached, the tungsten substrate fibers contained amorphous boron,273 6WB, W2B5, and WB4 as well as tungsten metal, while the molybdenum substrate fibers contained amorphous boron, MoBa, Mo2B5, and molybdenum metal for deposition times up to 30 sec. Just before the molybdenum metal pattern disappeared, a pattern similar to that of WB, appeared, suggesting that a phase, MOB,, isomorphous with WB,, was present in the fiber. This same pattern was obtained from the product formed by heating a mixture of molybdenum metal and excess boron powder in a boron nitride crucible at 1960°C in an argon atmosphere. As was the case with the WBn pattern, this pattern could best be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal unit cell rather than the tetragonal unit cell Chrktien and Helgorsky reported for ~0~4,~ see Table I. The unit cell parameters for MoB4 were calculated to be a, = 5.214A, co = 6.358A. Assuming the space group P63/mmc and positions5 2M01 in 2b and 2MoII in 2c found for tungsten in WB~,' a logical structure for MOB, was determined using geometrical considerations to place the boron

IN this paper I desire to embody the results of some personal observations of the working of the Siemens direct process as I witnessed it for a part of three days at the works of the Siemens-Anderson Company, in Pittsburgh. This preliminary investigation was to have been followed up by one extending over a considerable period of time, and would have embraced analytical and physical tests. Circumstances over which I had no control, resulting in the temporary suspension of work, have postponed the presentation of a complete paper. If the opportunity is afforded me, I purpose doing this at a future meeting of the Institute. To those interested in the development of the process, reference is made to the papers of Dr. Siemens in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for the years 1873 and 1877, and to the paper of our late lamented brother, Holley, in the 8th volume of the Transactions of our own Institute. Dr. Siemens, in the introduction to his paper "On the Manufacture of Iron and Steel by Direct Process," read before the Iron and Steel Institute in September, 1877, says: " In mixing comparatively rich iron ore in powder with about 25 per cent. of its weight of pounded coal, and in exposing this mixture for some hours to the heat of a common stove or of a smith's fire, metallic iron is formed, which, on being heated to the welding-point on the same smith's hearth, may be forged into a horseshoe of excellent quality. The admixture with the ore of some fluxing materials, such as lime or clay, will, in most cases, be of advantage to rid the iron of adherent slag." This is the keynote of the Siemens direct process. Dr. Siemens says further: "If we regard the production of wrought iron from an abstract point of view, we perceive that we have to accomplish two things, viz., the deoxidation of the ore, and the fusion of the earthy matter .mixed with it; and if we calculate the amount of carbon necessary to accomplish this end, we shall find that in using, say, hematite ore, consisting of peroxide of iron with from 10 to 15 per cent. of silica, we shall require barely 40 per cent. of carbonaceous matter per ton of iron contained in the' ore to effect its reduction, and also the fusion of the slag."

IRon oxide (FeO) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of steel. In the open-hearth furnace and the Bessemer converter it is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large extent both the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their products. Almost all of the refining action is carried out through the medium of FeO, which oxidizes carbon, manganese, silicon and phosphorus. At the end of any open-hearth or Bessemer heat the steel contains dissolved iron oxide, which must be wholly or partly eliminated. The type of deoxidation product depends on the amount of dissolved iron oxide and on the deoxidizer used. After the heat has been deoxidized and while it is being teemed, iron oxide diffuses from the ladle slag into the metal, causing losses of deoxidizer and increase in iron oxide content of the steel. It is generally believed that non-metallic inclusions are responsible for a great many failures of steel in service and for decreased yield of steel during rolling. The basis of most non-metallic inclusions is dissolved iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken in order to determine the amount of iron oxide that will dissolve in iron under various conditions. Steel-making slags are complex and it has been thought best to determine solubility under simple slags as a first step. Published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite at 1000°C are reviewed. The composition variables are . The coefficient, Vj, has the value for substitutional elements but may be assigned a ualue -1 for silicon to effect a simplification on the mathematical treatment. The activity coefficient PC = is obtained from gas equilibrium data. For the ternary systems studied the Henrian activity coefficient is given by the expression: The principle advantage in cornparison with the analogous expression in terms of atom fractions is found in the fact that for most systems the final term and in many the last two terms are zero. Values of the interaction parameters are tabulated and the graphical comparison of the equation with experirt~ental data is sho,wn in several figures. The thermodynamic properties of the solid solution, austenite, are of considerable importance in the heat-treatment of alloy steels and in other aspects of ferrous metallurgy. Early studies embodied in the Fe-C diagram have been extended to include other binary and some ternary diagrams. Our best hope of obtaining a useful thermodynamic treatment of reactions in complex alloy steels will not be found in quaternary and quinternary phase diagrams but in determinations of activities and interaction relations among the several solute elements. The foundation for such a development was laid by smith' in his early studies of the activity of carbon in Fe-C alloys and his subsequent work on Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-Mn, Fe-C-Ni, and Fe-C-Co solid solutions.2"4 Other observers have also made noteworthy contributions and these will be discussed and correlated here in the light of a somewhat simplified mathematical treatment of solute interactions. Fe-C AT 1000°C In a recent review of the thermodynamic properties of binary Fe-C austenite it was shown that the simple mathematical treatment employed by smith' was capable of describing all the published results on this solution. The treatment utilizes the atom ratio, yc = nC/nF,, rather than the atom fraction. The activity of carbon is proportional to the equilibrium gas ratio, either measured on a scalk in which the activity of graphite is taken as unity or, alternatively, aC may be set equal to yc at infinite dilution. In either case the ratio aC/y = (PC, the activity coefficient. It was found that the experimental data of smith1 and those of Diin-wald and wagner; Bungardt, Preisendanz, and Lehn-ert,' and Scheil, Schmidt, and Wiinnings at temperatures of 800" to 1200° C as well as reliable data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite could be represented by the equation for which graphite is the standard state: The data on alloyed austenite have been obtained at 1000°C. For this temperature, the "Henrian" activity coefficient (which is unity at infinite dilution) is: FOr an interstitial solute such as carbon in austenite it has been shown by statistical mechanicsg that the activity in the infinitely dilute solution is proportional to the ratio of the number of lattice sites occupied by carbon to the number of yet unfilled lattice sites. A variable zz proportional to this ratio serves as a useful measure of concentration:" in which b is the number of lattice sites provided by each atom of solvent; in austenite b = 1. The Henrian activity approaches zz at infinite dilution and the ratio a is the activity coefficient. The effect of a change in concentration is then given by: It has been shown further that in some systems the derivative in Eq. [4] remains constant over a wide range of concentrations. In such a case second-order terms become negligible and the Henrian activity coefficients is:

A knowledge of the limits of miscibility between reservoir oil and possible injection fluids is required for selection of the optimum miscible-injection fluid. Limits of miscibility can be estimated from the results of equilibrium phase-behavior experiments. They can also be determined by means of displacement experiments conducted in a high-pressure sandpack. This paper describes the equipment and procedure which have been developed for determining miscibility conditions by stable displacement. A systematic series of displacements of a West Texas reservoir oil was carried out. The results indicate that, at constant pressure, miscibility is a function only of the pseudocritical temperature of the injection gas. This fact, together with improved experimental methods, makes the displacement technique a rapid, reliable means for determining miscibility conditions. In conjunction with the displacement experiments, phase diagrams were constructed for the oil with dry gas and propane and with dry gas and ethane. Phase behavior of the methane-ethane-propane system was determined at 110°F. The experimental work demonstrates the feasibility of using ethane-rich gases to reduce cost and pressure requirements for miscible displacement. INTRODUCTION In recent years, interest in the miscible displacement of oil by light hydrocarbon mixtures has been high. Many pilot and a few field scale projects have been started.1 These projects have made use of various methods for achieving miscibility: (1) the LPG-slug process, (2) the enriched-gas-drive process and (3) the high-pressure gas-drive process. Some field projects have been successful; the results of others are debatable. In general, projects which have performed best have involved the injection of an appreciable fraction of a pore volume of miscible material. Economical application of miscible displacement depends strongly on the cost of the miscible-injection fluid. If an appreciable fraction of a pore volume of material is required for successful application of these methods, a precise knowledge of the minimum requirements for miscibility in terms of composition of injection fluid is essential. Therefore, reliable experimental methods for determining miscibility conditions are important, and a procedure for estimating these conditions from the composition of the reservoir fluid is highly desirable. The subject of this paper is the problem of determining conditions which result in miscible displacement of oil by light hydrocarbon mixtures. Miscibility conditions can be estimated by means of equilibrium experiments conducted in a PVT cell, or they can be determined by means of high-pressure displacement experiments. This paper describes the equipment and procedure which have been developed for the determination of miscibility by high-pressure displacement experiments. These methods have been applied to the displacement of a West Texas reservoir oil with mixtures of dry gas, ethane and propane. In conjunction with the displacement experiments, triangular phase diagrams have been constructed for mixtures of the oil with dry gas and propane and with dry gas and ethane. The effect of injection-gas composition on conditions for miscible displacement in high-pressure sandpacks and cores has been the subject of several published papers.2-5 The experimental methods used in these investigations were such that displacements were unstable, and the effects of fingering and/or gravity layover are clearly evident in the results. Miscibility conditions were probably correct in spite of the instability phenomena, but the experiments evidently were time-consuming, and limited data were reported. Systematic high-pressure flow studies which would support a correlation of miscibility conditions have not been reported; however, Wilson5 has proposed the use of pseudocritical temperature of the injection gas as a parameter and Benham, et al,6 have based a miscibility correlation on observed and calculated equilibrium data.

AT temperatures between 1095' and 1347ºC, 13 runs have been made on the diffusion of silicon in iron. In two of the runs the couple compositions were entirely within the loop of the Fe-Si system; the base alloys contained 0.0 and 1.0 wt pct Si. The other runs in which the couples consisted of a 2.3 wt pct Si alloy welded to a 3.7 pct Si alloy were a phase throughout. The alloys were made by melting electrolytic iron and commercially pure silicon. Trace impurities were not determined. The butt welded couples were diffused in an inert atmosphere of argon or hydrogen. After cooling, cuts of two mils or greater thickness were machined parallel to the weld interface. The chips were analyzed for silicon. When the concentration and distance data were examined on the conventional probability plot,' no marked variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration was indicated over the narrow composition ranges employed. Therefore, a single diffusion coefficient is recorded for each run in Table I. The temperatures and atmospheres of the diffusion anneal are listed along with the compositions of the base alloys. For a iron the silicon diffusion coefficient is given by the equation: D = 0.44 e-48,000/RT where R is the gas Constant and T, the absolute temperature. However, since the scatter in the data is fairly large, the activation energy may be in error by as much as 6000 cal per g-atom. The two ? iron points do not permit estimation of the activation energy with any reasonable certainty. They do indicate that the coefficients reported by Smithells2 and Jost,3 based on the work of Fry,4 are much too high. Although very dilute solutions in iron of manganese,5 nickel,8 cobalt,7 and molybdenum8 give dif- fusion coefficients quite close to those obtained for self-diffusion in iron, the silicon values are considerably higher, though of the same order of magnitude. This seems to be consistent with the fact that the silicon atom is the only one of those listed here which is appreciably smaller than iron. IN a concern with the varied interests of the Western Union Telegraph Co., where practically all types of metals, both ferrous and nonferrous, are utilized, many types of failures of materials occur. These have to do not only with outside plant construction, such as corrosion and fatigue of line wire and cable, but also with inside plant equipment operating at such high speeds that rapid deterioration of metal. parts due to fatigue and wear results. Both corrosion and fatigue affect the life of copper wire so its normal life in any particular locality is largely dependent on the atmospheric conditions. Tensions vary widely owing to changes in temperature and ice and wind loadings and the wire is Subject to a great range of vibration caused by wind gusts aril vibration front trains or other heavy vehicles transmitted through the earth. High frequency low-amplitude vibrations are sometimes audible as singing in the wire. The other extreme is the vertical slashing or dancing of the wire observed during severe storms where amplitudes of 9, ft. or more at low frequencies have been observed.

THE re-crystallization of metals has been the subject of much scientific investigation, some of which has resulted in a better understanding of this extremely important and interesting phenomenon. Unfortunately, while many have propounded theories of re-crystallization, but a few have presented experimental evidence as to how it takes place. If this can be determined the question, why re-crystallization occurs, may be answered more definitely. Re-crystallization in single phase metals consists of a complete rearrangement and re-sizing of the grains, of which the structure is composed, while the type of structure remains the same. That is to say, if the structure before re-crystallization is composed of a number of polyhedral grains of different shape and size, a particular spot after re-crystallization will be seen to consist of grains in no way different from the original except in size and shape. The re-crystallized grains may be smaller or larger, depending on the treatment received; and, while the re-crystallization may be brought about by means of heat treatment only in passing through a critical range, yet it is common knowledge that single phase metals subjected to cold working are possessed of a tendency toward re-crystallization, even if the heating does not reach critical range. The study of re-crystallization would, of course, be much easier if we had single crystals of any metal as the original material with which to study the phenomenon of re-crystallization, since it would permit the observation of structural changes at what amounts to enormous magnification, by changing the scale of the specimen. In metals of more normal grain size the crystal boundaries introduce complications, but the process, it may be assumed, is essentially the same. Such an opportunity

INTRODUCTION A major change in financing exports in recent years has been the decreased importance of subsidized export credits, following the commitment of the OECD countries to eliminate the subsidy element. Subsidized export credit rates are now often more expensive than market rates as the financing for exporters has decreased in volume and importance. The forfait market, in recognition of this decreasing importance, provides a rapidly expanding source of nonrecource finance for exporters. The following is a step by step guide to what it is, how it works, its benefits and problems. WHAT IS FORFAITING? Forfaiting is not new. It has been used in Europe for about 25 years to provide export finance for both capital goods and commodities without recourse to the exporter. Although long the preserve of exporters in Germany, and more lately Italy, forfaiting is now used increasingly by exporters in Great Britain, the United States, Canada and Scandinavia. It is a fairly simple operation with easy straight-forward documentation. The transaction involves the purchase by the forfaiting bank of a bill of exchange or a series of bills without recourse to the exporter. These bills will have been drawn by the exporter, accepted by the importer, and will usually bear the unconditional guarantee of the importer's bank. They are normally drawn payable at intervals during the credit period agreed between importer and exporter and are purchased at a discount by the forfaiter. The exporter thus obtains his cash payment and the importer receives his credit period. The forfaiter collects the amount of the bills as they mature directly from the importer. Credit periods vary, depending upon the type of goods and the country and commercial risk of the importer. The period is generally between one and five years with six monthly maturities. The usual forfait currencies are US dollars. Deutschmarks and Swiss francs and others, such as sterling, French francs, and the Scandinavian currencies are being used more frequently. CHOOSING FORFAITING Most types of financing require the continued involvement of the exporter in the financial side of the transaction during the credit period. Forfaiting has certain comparative advantages. In particular, it is possible to forfait 100 percent of the risk without recourse to the exporter, unlike government sponsored export finance schemes, where some retention of the risk by the exporter is required. In addition, exports from country sources do not present problems and forfaiting can also cover trade within the EEC. Other benefits for the exporter are: (a) The exporter's balance sheet is improved; debts are turned into cash thus improving the liquidity of the company and enhancing its cash flow. And there are no contingent liabilities for bills of exchange. (b) If the sales contract is in a foreign currency forfaiting removes the risk to the exporter of adverse movements in foreign exchange during the credit period. (c) Fluctuations in interest rates during the credit period can be ignored since in forfaiting the transaction is usually done on fixed interest rate terms on a discount basis. (d) The political and transfer risks are taken by the forfaiter. (e) The commercial risk is taken by the forfaiter. (f) The costs of administration and collection etc. during the credit period are removed.
