THE fact that little if anything has appeared in the technical press or in the Transactions of the Institute on the subject of roll shells proper, used in various grinding appliances such as Cornish rolls or Chilean mills, may be taken as an incentive, if not an excuse, for the present article. No attempt is made to enter into a. discussion as to the theory or mathematics of crushing as performed by rolls, the subject being treated in a general way with respect to the manufacture of roll shells 'and some salient points touching on their adaptability and wear in service. While it stands to reason that skill coupled with judgment in the mechanical design of rolls, Chilean mills or other types of grinding machinery, with special reference to strength of parts, nicety of adjustment and other mechanical features, stand for efficiency in their operation .and satisfaction in service, the exceedingly important item. of roll shells or other wearing parts entering into their construction should not be lost sight of. In other words, a well-designed piece of grinding machinery is just as inefficient in service, when equipped with poor roll shells or shells made of the wrong or an inferior grade of metal, as good roll shells made according to the best practice the steel maker knows, working on an old or antiquated set of rolls. Unfortunately there is a tendency occasionally for the machinery builder to blame the steel maker or vice versa if roll shells do not wear well or evenly, or if they break before being worn down to their ultimate thin point. There is no occasion for this attitude, as the product, of each must stand on its own merits. But it is essential that the two work in harmony since the machinery builder usually does not furnish the shells for his rolls or grinding mills, but depends on the steel maker, who makes a specialty of this rolled product, to give the particular needed element of efficiency to his machine.

Only a few zinc-rich alloys are in commercial use today, and these depend largely upon solid solution effects for their desirable properties. Typical examples are rolled alloys containing about 1 Per cent of copper, with Or without additions of elements such as magnesium, and die-casting alloys containing about 4 Per cent of aluminum with small amounts of magnesium and sometimes copper." A number of elements are capable of forming alloys with zinc, Which do not enter into solid solution except in limited degree. The Present Paper considers One such system, zinc-titanium, in which alloys having potentially useful properties in the rolled form were found. Zinc-titanium System The zinc-rich portion of the zinc-titanium diagram, as determined by standard methods in this laboratory,3 is shown in Fig. I. The portion of the diagram of significance in the present work extends from 0 to about 0.5 per cent titanium. Gebhardt4 places the eutectic at 0.45 per cent, but the evidence in favor 01 the composition given in Fig. I is considerable. The solid solubility of titanium in zinc is very low indeed and possibly places these alloys in a somewhat different category from the commercial alloys previously mentioned. Alloy Preparation All of the alloys used in this work were prepared with titanium metal of 98.9 per cent purity. In most cases high-purity zinc (99.99 per cent) was used but sufficient work was done later to show that zinc of about high-grade composition would yield approximately equal results. Best practice in alloy manufacture seemed to be to prepare a zinc-titanium hardener by adding about 4 per cent of titanium metal to molten zinc and holding under a boric acid cover, with frequent stirrings, at 750°C, until the titanium had dissolved. The desired titanium content could readily be obtained in the final alloy by adding the calculated amount 01 this hardener. The alloys proved to be quite stable in composition, unless overheated, and, with reasonable temperature control, required no cover or flux to prevent loss of titanium content by oxidatioll, Hot-rollig Tests Three alloys containing, by analysis, 0.05, 0.12, and 0.23 per cent titanium were selected for preliminary study. Slab cross sections a a marked grain refinement* (Fig. 2) in the two alloys of highest titanium content. Cast unalloyed zinc has a columnar grain structure similar to that shown for the alloy of lowest titanium content but without the scatter of small equiaxed grains at the center.

Configurations of ferrite crystals have been found in a plain carbon steel which appear to have resulted from the nucleation of new ferrite crystals at the interphase boundaries of previously formed crystals despite the high carbon concentrations which necessarily develop at these boundaries. This phenomenon has been termed sympathetic nucleation. An attempt has been made to reconcile the occurrence of sympathetic nu-cleation with current nucleation theory. THIS investigation is one of a series on the formation of proeutectoid ferrite from austenite. From the viewpoint of chemical composition, this reaction consists of the nucleation and diffusional growth of crystals of carbon-poor ferrite within a matrix of carbon-rich austenite. The austenite adjacent to the austenite-ferrite boundaries will be greatly enriched in carbon, approximately to the value of the y/(a + y) equilibrium curve or its metastable extrapolation at the temperature of transformation. Those areas of austenite appreciably farther removed from the growing ferrite, on the other hand, will be relatively unaltered in composition, especially at the earlier stages of transformation. Since rates of nucleation are considered to decrease exponentially with decreasing supersaturation,' the frequency with which ferrite nuclei appear at austenite-ferrite boundaries should be negligible in relation to that at which they form in other regions of the austenite. During this investigation, however, many groupings of ferrite crystals have been found which appear to have resulted from the nucleation of ferrite at austenite-ferrite boundaries. This phenomenon has been given the name of sympathetic 71.1tcleation. A number of micrographs of morphological configurations caused by sympathetic nucleation will be presented, after which an explanation for this reaction will be proposed in terms of current nucleation theory. Some of the structures to be considered are composed of bainite, an aggregate of ferrite and carbide, rather than of ferrite. Since ferrite and bainite differ only in that bainite forms under conditions which result in the nucleation of carbides behind the advancing austenite-ferrite boundaries,' it will usually be unnecessary, for the purpose of this paper, to distinguish between the two reaction products. All studies were performed on an electric furnace steel (obtained from the Vanadium Alloy Steel Co.) containing 0.29 pct C, 0.76 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 0.005 pct P, and 0.007 pct S. The alloy was cast as a 150 Ib, 7x7 in. cross section ingot and forged into bars 2x2 in. in cross section. These bars were homogenized for 48 hr at 1250°C in an Endo-Gas atmosphere. The depth to which decarburization penetrated during this heat treatment was determined by chemical and microscopic analyses and the affected metal was removed by machining. Specimens for isothermal transformation studies were cut from the remaining material; most of these specimens were 1/2x1/4X1/16 in., though some with a thickness of 1/32 in. were prepared for use at the shorter reaction times and lower reaction temperatures. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1300°C, isothermally reacted for various times at temperatures ranging from 775" to 475 "C, and then quenched in iced water. The austenite grain sizes within individual specimens ranged from ASTM Nos. 1 through —4. A commercial heat-treating salt which was continuously deoxidized by an immersed graphite crucible served to minimize the loss of carbon during austenitizing; thick covers of powdered graphite and immersed graphite rods effectively prevented decarburization in the lead pots employed for the isothermal reaction treatments. The heat-treated specimens were sectioned and mounted in Bakelite. Following the completion of standard grinding and mechanical polishing procedures, the specimens were electrolytically polished with a Buehler-Waisman apparatus and etched in 2 pct nital. Experimental Results Rules of Evidence for Sympathetic Nucleation—On the basis of observations made on a single plane of polish, one precipitate crystal may be considered to have been sympathetically nucleated at the inter-phase boundary of another precipitate crystal when the following conditions are fulfilled: 1) The sympathetically nucleated crystal is not in contact with a grain boundary or a subboundary in the matrix phase. 2) The shape, size, and location of the crystal at whose boundary sympathetic nucleation occurred (hereafter termed the base crystal) and the crystal formed by sympathetic nucleation substantially pre-clude the possibility that the plane of polish em-ployed may have concealed the fact that both crys-tals actually nucleated at a grain boundary or a sub-boundary in the matrix phase.

ANY laboratory corrosion test, as judged from the practical point of view, is valuable only to the extent that it foretells what will, in all probability, occur in service. Such a test is most properly to be considered as a "pilot test, " that is, a test which indicates the direction along which action may be expected to occur rather than as a truly quantitative test which would be expected to tell just how and to what extent the action would proceed. It is generally recognized that laboratory corrosion tests should be chosen with particular reference to the character of service expected for any particular type of metal, so far as it can be foreseen. Even when this requirement has been fulfilled, however, the question whether the actual service behavior of the material is in accordance and general agreement with predictions based upon such laboratory tests is always a pertinent one. The information available in the technical literature bearing on the correlation between the service behavior of metals from the corrosion standpoint, and the results obtained with the same metals in laboratory corrosion tests is very meager, indeed. The results which have been obtained in weather-exposure tests of sheet duralumin which form the body of this discussion are presented here for their bearing on this particular phase of the problem of the corrosion resistance of duralumin. Although the exposure tests described have not been completed, in the sense that all of the tests, in the series initially laid down, have been accomplished, still the general trend shown by the results is so clear that a number of definite conclusions at this stage (subject, of course, to possible modification in the light of later results) are believed to be warranted. The tests reported upon here form one phase of the much broader study of this subject which has been under way for several years in which the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department, the Army Air Corps and the Bureau of Standards have cooperated. I was asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day's labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman's point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer's effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had not yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man's reason for coming, what grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a 'air deal is all the man wants.

The discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.' The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.

Description of Quarry THE shale used at the Renton plant of the Denny-Renton Clay Coal Co., for the manufacture of vitrified paving brick occurs in a hill rising from 200 to 300 ft. above the level of the valley in which the plant is situated. The shale deposit, which is of unknown thickness pitches about 10° to the southeast. The 150-ft. face worked extends approximately east and west, so that the clip, as shown by the photograph, is to the left and into the hill. The shale is overlain with about 50 ft. of gravel, 70 ft. of clay, and 30 ft. of mixed loam and gravel, making altogether from 125 to 150 ft. of overburden. Disposal of Overburden The overburden is removed by sluicing. For this purpose a No. 2 Joshua Hendy giant is used, throwing a 12-in. stream', and having 60 lb. pressure at the nozzle. The water is drawn through an 8-in. pipe from Cedar river, about 1,000 ft. distant, by means of a Worthington four-stage centrifugal pump, direct connected with a 100-h.p. motor placed just south of the factory, and 1,500 ft. from the nozzle This plant handles the material satisfactorily to a height of about 75 ft. above the level of the top of the shale. When the higher levels are worked, an auxiliary plant consisting of a four-stage Byron Jackson centrifugal pump with a 100-h.p., belt-connected motor, is thrown into the system. This plant is situated on top of the shale and can be discerned at the extreme right of the trestle work in Fig. 1.

It would be a difficult matter to trace from the beginning the very few improvements made in the burning of fuels prior to 1860. Donbtless the crossing of the sticks of wood in building a mood fire early appealed to our savage ancestry as a means of expediting its effectiveness for their crude culinary purposes. Stones and andirons came later in assisting the admission of air to the under part of the fuel bed, while beacons and cressets, utilized metal bars as supports for the same purpose. It is probable that Tuba1 Cain owed his success to the use of bellows making possible the use of mixed fuel and charge upon a hearth. With the development of working in cast iron, grate bars came in, and they are still with us doing duty in every household and almost every art where heat is a factor. Little was done beyond these crude methods prior to 1860. With the advancement of knowledge came the fuel-gas producer, a natural child of the retorts employed in supplying illuminating gas. It is only within the last 15 years that the conclusion became general that complicated systems for saving heat would not remedy deli-. ciencies in its primary development, and within that time there has been great advancement in the means of producing initially a fire of high effciency, so that to-day we are moving rapidly toward both high development and high absorption, with the resultant of high efficiencies. In studying the subject of the availability of pulverized coal as a fuel, it may occur to ask, why has this not come up earlier? This, question would be naturally prompted by recalling the fact that Thomas Crompton's English patents upon his methods were issued to him nearly 40 years ago. A conclusive answer to this, however, is that Crompton at that time had very crude facilities for making what was at best a very imperfect pulverization of the coal, arid the expense of preparation mas very great. He does not seem to have been aware of the advantage of a thorough drying of the coal in the

Founding of the Institute The advance of population and civilization in the U. S. moved through the woodlands of the East, and reached the edge of the great central plains about the middle of the nineteenth century. There the advance paused for almost a generation - ahead were vast reaches of prairie country, uncharted, forbidding, and populated by hostile tribes of the native Indians. The turmoil of the Civil War, and the readjustments following it, further delayed the advance. By about 1870, the Nation was becoming stabilized again, the conflict with the Indians was closing, and the pressure of growth was forcing population to resume its westward movement. In addition to geography, the Nation had another frontier: the development of its immense natural resources. Conditions of the time brought into sharp focus the need for coal, iron, steel, gold, silver, and other minerals. The application of engineering and science was necessary for the production of these minerals and their manufacture into products to meet the needs of a growing nation. The requirements of the time were eloquently expressed in a paper by AIME member Edmund C. Pechin in 1872 : We find, the world over, the most intense activity everywhere displayed in enterprises requiring prodigious quantities of iron. Railways of colossal magnitude are projected. . . . The growing scarcity of timber is compelling the use of iron in buildings; bridges of wonderful size and strength; huge ocean steamships; barges and boats for lake and river traffic; churches; cars, and thousands of minor articles of every shape and size. . . . The time has come when scientific research is to assume its true position - the day of "sheer force and blind stupidity," whose only protection is a high tariff, has gone forever . . . the physicist, the geologist and mineralogist; the chemist, the engineer, are as essential to success as the [blast] furnace itself. . . . There is no merely practical man, no matter how varied may have been his experience, or how long his practice, that will not benefit from the results of scientific investigation. That there is a growing sense of the importance of having thoroughly prepared scientific men in every department of business is evidenced by the institutions [of learning] that are springing up in different quarters, provided with

Almost every metallurgist who has given the Howe Memorial Lecture has had a personal contact with the distinguished gentleman to whose honor this hour is devoted. Unfortunately for me, such personal contacts were not possible. However, in the preparation of a thesis on the open-hearth process, one of my earliest tasks was to make a survey of the literature, and it was from Professor Howe's Metallurgy of Iron and Steel that I drew a number of references to previous work which formed the foundation for my reading. In his volume there is such a complete exposition of the then current thought on the subject of slags and on their role in the elimination of phosphorus from steel that I feel no hesitation in discussing in this Howe Lecture the subject of "Slag Control." In the present era of close specification, the drive for uniformity of product, and the close inspection of the product and of the cost sheet, the utmost efforts must be made to control the steelmaking variables to the best advantage of the steel producer. One of the major variables is the slag in the furnace and its effect upon the composition and quality of the metal. What advantages are to be gained from slag control? In the broad sense the advantages must be tremendous, because the very foundations of good steel melting are based on "shaping up" the slag to a point where, with proper temperature, the heat is ready for the final additions. Every melter works toward these ends through his experience with innumerable heats of steel. The elimination of undesirable constituents such as phosphorus and sulphur is entirely a matter of slag composition and physical nature, a point well known for over half a century. The role played by the slag in assisting in proper heat transfer from roof and flame to the steel has been equally well known. In more recent years there has come the problem of oxygen control in the more accurate gauging of additions for making high-grade rimmed steel for the new strip mills, and in the deoxidizing additions for grain-size control and cleanliness of forging steels, both carbon and alloy. In this problem the oxidizing characteristics of the slag are of prime importance.

Performance of a pilot flood in eastern Kansas indicates improved recovery and accelerated production resulting from mobility ratio control obtained by adding a high moleculur weight polymer to injected water. Ultimate pilot flood recovery of the 75-cp reservoir oil is anticipated to he 350 bbllacre-ft during the six-year flood life. Cumulative recovery to date totals 242 bbl/acre-ft after 30 months of injection. Reservoir parameters and flood performance are disc~rssed in detail to provide a case history relating to the feasibility of polymer flooding. INTRODUCTION The Vernon Polymer flood of the Brazos Oil & Gas Co., located in Sec. 2, 24 S., 16 E., Woodson County, Kans., was begun in late Oct., 1963. Injection of a 500 ppm solution of Pusher* polymer was initiated in a 15-acre pilot to determine feasibility of improving oil recovery by mobility ratio control. Performance to date and the anticipated recovery of 115,000 bbl from the 329 acre-ft pilot indicate efficient displacement of the viscous reservoir oil. Dependence of flood recovery on the displacing fluid-displaced oil mobility ratio has long been recognized. Displacement efficiency of the reservoir oil decreases with increasing mobility ratio. Therefore, economic reduction of this parameter is an attractive approach to improving oil recovery. particularly from viscous oil reservoirs where mobility ratios are often quite high. Waterflood mobility ratios can be controlled by dilute solutions of certain polymers'; which provide a displacing fluid with considerably reduced mobility. Reservoir parameters and flood performance are emphasized in this paper to provide data relating to polymer flood applicability. THEORY The polymer used in the Vernon pilot exhibits the property of unusually high resistance to flow through porous media.'.' A small concentration in injected water effects a mobility reduction considerably beyond that predicted from increases in bulk viscosity as measured in a capillary or rotating cup viscosimeter. Water mobility in the subject flood is reduced by a factor of 7.55 with the addition of 500 ppm Pusher chemical to injected water while the bulk viscosity is increased from 1.03 to only 1.40 cp at 75F. The exact flow mechanism causing resistance to flow has not been established; however, it is observed only in tortuous flow systems and appears to be influenced by brine properties, rock properties and oil saturation. Consequently, mobility reduction is estimated from flow studies for a given sample of reservoir rock and is expressed in terms of a "resistance factor".' This parameter is defined as the ratio of brine mobility to polymer solution mobility measured at residual oil saturation: RF= ?m/?p= (km/µm)/(kp/µp)M.......(1) where RF = resistance factor (dimensionless) k*. and A, = mobility of water and polymer solution, respectively k,,, and k,, = water and polymer permeability, respectively (darcies) µie and µp = viscosity of water and polymer, respectively (poise). Eq. 1 is similar to the expression commonly used to relate the relative mobility of the water bank at residual oil saturation to oil-bank mobility at irreducible water saturation: where M =mobility ratio of water to oil (dimension-less) A, = mobility of oil k, = permeability to oil (darcies) )i* = oil viscosity (poise). From Eqs. 1 and 2 it is apparent that the polymer-solution-to-oil-mobility ratio can be approximated by dividing the brine-to-oil ratio by the resistance factor RF: Mpn=M10/RF...........(3) where M,-, = mobility ratio of polymer solution to oil (dimensionless). This simplified presentation assumes no dilution of the polymer solution by connate water. Also, the presence of a connate water bank separating the polymer solution from the displaced oil is not considered. Displacement of oil by waterflooding is increasingly dominated by viscous forces as the viscosity of the oil displaced increases. When the oil mobility is less than that of the injected water, the oil-water interface is not a piston-like front.3,' Instead, instabilities occur at the flood front in the form of viscous fingers which tend to penetrate the less mobile oil bank. PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by E. R. PALOWITCH and A. W. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1965, 64.9 percent of the 512 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 95 million tons was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes rose from 7.0 to 28.5 percent from 1938 to 1965. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes : 1. Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of e 0.1 specific gravity units. 2. Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ±0.005 specific gravity units. 3. Ability to handle a wide range of sizes (up to 14 inches). 4. Relatively low capital and operating costs when considered in terms of high capacity and small space requirements. 5. Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. 6. Ability to handle fluctuations in feed both in terms of quantity and quality. HISTORY Sir Henry Bessemer patented the first dense medium process in 1858. Solutions of the chlorides of iron, manganese, barium and calcium were proposed as separating liquids; the separation was made in a cone-shaped separator. THE actual procedure in estimating depth of overburden from mag-netic observations made on the surface will vary with the form of the deposit and any theoretical discussion will apply only so far as the form of the deposit conforms to the mathematical premises on which the theory is based. Since the shapes of natural deposits in the field cannot be expressed rigorously in mathematical form, the best that can be done is to assume some simple form and deduce results. Fortunately many small variations in form produce only slight changes in the estimated depth of overburden, therefore the methods have a definite practical value. For the theoretical treatment, magnetic ore deposits may be divided roughly into three classes, depending upon whether the magnetic anom-alies may be considered to arise from (1) a single magnetic pole, (2) a dike or (3) a magnetic doublet. Particular cases, falling under one or other of these classes, have been discussed by different authors.1-4 In general, it may be stated that when the magnetic effects as measured on the surface are due only to one pole of the body, the other pole being so remote that its effect may be neglected, the resultant anomaly F at any point will vary as the inverse square of the distance r of the point from the pole, which may be expressed mathematically by F = k/r2, where k is a constant. When the deposit occurs in the form of a long, thin dike, the resultant anomaly will be of the form F = k'/r and when the deposit is in the shape of a lens, so that both poles have an appreciable effect on the surface, the result will be similar to that caused by a magnetic doublet, and the form will be F = k'/r3. The particular class under which a deposit falls may be deduced from the results of the magnetic survey. The second class is readily found, but there may be difficulty in deciding between the first and third. Isody-namic contours of both the vertical and horizontal anomalies will often be a good guide in making a correct decision.

The purpose of this paper is to report evidence, regarding metal structures, that is contradictory to the amorphous-metal hypothesis of Beilby, and particularly evidence that is opposed to the proposition that a vitreous amorphous layer is produced by polishing a piece of metal. According to the theory of Beilby, which has been developed by Rosenhain and others, polishing a piece of metal greatly affects the condition of the metal at or near the surface polished, making that surface entirely different in character from the metal beneath. A vitreous amorphous surface film is said to be formed. The polishing process, on the basis of Beilby's explanation, is well known and does not require discussion here, but it is advisable to seek the precise meaning of the term "amorphous." According to Beilby, "amorphous means non-crystalline in the most intimate sense of the word; the molecules arc not marshalled in crystalline order and orientation." According to Rosenhain, the amorphous condition is that assumed by a metal when the crystalline arrangement is completely broken up so that the atoms exist in a state of disorderly arrangement similar to that which exists in the liquid state. Thus, from the point of view of the phase rule, the "amorphous phase" is regarded as being identical with the liquid phase. Amorphous metal is often likened to an undercooled liquid. A crystalline substance is one in which the atoms are arranged in space according to some definite repeating geometrical pattern. The existence of amorphous metal has not been definitely proved. The evidence offered here that amorphous metal probably does not exist is of a direct nature and is afforded by x-ray diffraction effects given by a number of metals and alloys when polished, cold-worked, and annealed. Considerable of the experimental work was carried out with substantially pure aluminum and the aluminum alloy duralumin, but many of the observations made on these materials were checked by similar observations on copper, iron, tin, zinc, lead, mild steels, and

The tensile and notch tensile properties of four refractory metals (molybdenum, tungsten, niobium (columbium), and tantalum) and one alloy (Mo-0.5Ti) were investigated. All the materials were evaluated in bar form, and the molybdenum and Mo-0.5Ti also were studied in sheet form. The notch sensitivity of each material was evaluated on the basis of several criteria, including the notch-unnotch strength ratio, the ductility transition, and the fracture transitions. USE of refractory metals as structural materials in aircraft and space vehicles may subject them to low-as well as high-temperature environments.
