Bond type simulated closed-circuit grindability tests and batch grindability tests were run on six pure minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore. The simulated closed-circuit tests were made at five different meshes of grind. The minerals tested varied widely in hardness and breakage pattern. For all simulated closed-circuit tests both Bond and Holmes work indices were calculated and compared. The Bond grindability testlm6 has been widely and quite successfully used for predictions of such items as ball mill power requirements and as an aid in plant comminution equipment selection. The test is interesting in that although run as a series of batch tests it is over-all a simulated closed-circuit test with a circulating load of 250%. The simulated closed-circuit feature is probably the primary reason for the notable success of the test. Perhaps the major criticism that can be brought against the test is that it is time consuming, since it normally takes a trained technician about an eight-hour shift to perform it.4 For many purposes this is an acceptable time requirement. However, if a grindability test is to be used for mill control purposes it should be performed in as short a time interval as possible, preferably under an hour. Sometimes in industry strictly batch tumbling mill tests are run and an attempt is made to correlate such batch tests with plant mill operation. Then an attempt is made to adjust operating tumbling mills based on data from the tests. The tests, however, frequently do not correlate well with operating data. The purpose of the present work was to explore some of the similarities and differences between a simulated closed-circui.t grindability test and a batch type test. Six different minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore were tested in the experimentation. These materials varied widely in hardness, breakage characteristics, etc. Standard dry Bond grindability tests were mn on all materials at 48, 65, 100, 150 and 200 meshes of grind. Feed material was prepared by stage cmshing to -6 mesh. Initial feed volume was 700 cc. Care was taken to maintain the standard constant weight (about 20125 gm) and number of balls (283) during all the tests. Rotational speed was 70 rpm. Table I lists the materials studied along with pertinent data regarding the materials and Bond grindabilities obtained. In addition, dry batch tests were performed on all materials. These tests were made in the same mill as was used for the Bond tests. An identical ball charge and an identical feed volume were used. After rotating the mill for a predetermined number of revolutions at the same rotational speed as for the Bond test, the material was removed and separated from the ball charge. A screen analysis was performed on this product. Knowing the original size distribution of the feed and the size distribution of the product, it was possible to calculate the grindability or grams of a particular mesh produced per revolution of the mill. After the screen analysis of the product, the various fractions were recombined and placed back in the mill for further grinding. After grinding for additional revolutions of the mill the procedure was repeated. Thus, it was possible to obtain grindabilities for each material at a number of meshes of grind and for various revolutions of the mill. Grind-abilities obtained from batch tests are shown in Table 11. COMPARISON OF BOND AND BATCH GRINDABILITIES Figs. 1A through 1D show relationships between batch and Bond grindabilities. Figs. lA, lB, 1C and 1D show respectively graphs indicating the relationships for batch tests run for 100, 300, 500 and 700 revolutions of the mill. For a particular material on each graph, points are shown for 200, 150, 100, 65, and 48 meshes of grind except for several missing coarse meshes of grind for galena which did not fall conveniently on the figures. For each material and graph the point nearest the origin is for 200 mesh, the next for 150 mesh, the next for 100 mesh, etc. Considering Fig. lA, it is interesting to note that all relationships shown are essentially straight lines. INTRODUCTION THE Wisconsin zinc district, or the Upper Mississippi lead. and zinc district as it is also termed, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, and embraces adjacent portions of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant, and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, and Jo Davies county in Illinois. In Iowa, Dubuque formerly produced considerable lead, but there has been little mining there in recent years. The map, Fig. 1, shows the entire district, with roads, railways, streams, and the various towns, or "camps," around Which the mines. are clustered. The hatchwork indicates the areas iii which lead and zinc have been mined. The district is about 60 mi. (96 km.) north and south and about 40 mi. (64 km.) east and west. Not all of the territory is mineral bearing, and there are considerable areas that are believed to be barren. The grouping of the mines is patchy and irregular, though certain broad zones of mineralization extend almost the full width of the district, as from Mineral Point west through Mifflin and Livingston, and from Shullsburg west through New Diggings and Hazel Green. It is worth noting that the best mines of the district have, to date, been found within 10 mi. east or west of the fourth principal meridian line, thus lying within a long, narrow, north-and-south belt extending the length of the district. In a field as large as the Wisconsin, which has only within com-paratively recent time been worked intensively for zinc, the. chances are good for, opening new and important orebodies in parts of the district not yet, or insufficiently, prospected. However, the prospecting has been most successful around, or adjacent to, the old lead diggings of nearly a century ago, and the camps that were well known then are still centers of activity. In their order of importance they are: New Diggings, Benton, Mifflin-Livingston, Galena, Linden, Hazel Green, Shullsburg, and Highland.

Fire-brick stoves have become a necessary part of the modern coke blast-furnace equipment, and are also superseding the cast-iron pipe stoves in anthracite- and charcoal-furnaces. The brick stoves in general use are of either the Cowper or Whitwell type, or modifications of these bearing the names of those who invented the alterations from the original types rather than any real departure from then]. All these stoves have approximately the same valve-equipment and follow the same line of operation. The waste gas from the furnace enters at one port and burns in a single combustion-chamber, and the heated products are drawn through the various passe; in the brickwork to a stack of proper height to create the necessary draught. The last passes of these stoves receive a very small percentage of the heat from the gas, owing to their extreme distance from the combustion-chamber; and this chamber also suffers great deterioration in the attempt to force the heat into the farthest passes. At best, about 70 per cent. of the heat taken up is held in the combustion-chamher and the first down-pass of the Whitwell stoves. Mr. Hugh Kennedy, Manager of the Isabella Furnaces, Pittsburgh, Pa., who has had a large experience with the fire-brick hotblast stoves, was so strongly impressed with the fact that but about thirty per cent of the brick of the average stove were doing proper duty as heat-agents, that, after careful study and experiment, he had three 20- by 60-feet stoves constructed with a view of more uniformly heating all the brick. In these the general lines of the Whitwell stove are followed, with the blast-connections unaltered, but gas is introduced at the bottom of each pass, and outlets are provided at the top, so that the gases have a direct natural draught in each pass and the highest heats are obtained at the bottom instead of the top. The natural tendency being toward the reverse condition, the brickwork soon acquires an almost uniform temperature.

The remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a misunderstanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combustion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publications have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

The investigation of a 50 pct Co alloy was undertaken to determine whether there was any direct correlation between the structure and properties of Co-Fe alloys which were given various magnetic heat treatments. The magnetic anisotropy and texture of the 0.002-in. cold-reduced 98 pct material tend to decrease and change in nature with increasing temperature of the recrystallization anneal. Annealing samples in a magnetic field had little effect on either the magnetic properties or texture. However, cooling them in a magnetic field greatly improved their magnetic properties. THE beneficial influence of a magnetic field applied during the heat treatment of certain soft magnetic materials has been known for a long time. Early work showed that the presence of a magnetic field of a few oersteds during the heat treatment of Fe-Ni alloys will cause a large increase in maximum permeability. A pronounced increase in the residual induction which is produced by the magnetic anneal causes the hysteresis loop to approach the shape of a rectangle. Such results are beneficial since the desired properties are high permeability, high induction at maximum permeability, high residual induction, and low coercive force. More recently Libsch and coworkers1 studied the effect of magnetic annealing on the hysteresis properties of a series of Co-Fe alloys prepared from powders. They observed good response for the 35 and 50 pct Co alloys but little response for the 42 pct Co alloy. They pointed out that this was somewhat surprising since the 42 pct alloy has a high linear magnetostriction and zero crystal anisotropy and similar conditions in Fe-Ni alloys give excellent response to magnetic annealing. They found optimum properties to be at the 50 pct composition with residual induction, Br = 19,000 gauss and coercive force, Hc = 0.68 oersteds after the magnetic anneal. Before the magnetic anneal these values were B, = 12,600 gauss and Hc = 1.15 oersteds. The optimum treatment consisted of cooling from above the y-a transformation temperature to 900°C in a field of 20 oersteds, holding 11/2 hr at 900°C, then cooling at a rate of 20° to 25°C per min in the field to below 230°C. Cooling rate mainly affected coercive force with the value decreasing from 1.09 to 0.88 oersteds as the rate was increased from 3° to 48°C per min. Cooling from 1020" to 900°C in a field followed by further cooling to 230°C without the field gave properties decidedly inferior to those for samples annealed with the field applied throughout the cooling. They concluded that to get the best properties the samples must be cooled in a field to a threshold temperature above which the alloy is plastic enough to be affected by magnetostriction. In this respect the holding temperature must be high enough so that the alloy exhibits good plasticity to permit the optimum orienting of magnetic domains by relaxation of magnetostriction. In contrast, the holding time was of less significance for there was little improvement when the time exceeded 1/2 hr. The improvement in properties effected by magnetic annealing has usually been attributed to the establishment of a domain texture caused by the "freezing in" of magnetic strains. On the other hand, Smoluchowski and Turner2,3 apparently found that a magnetic field applied during recrystallization could alter the crystal texture. This paper presents a method of predicting the production history of an underground combustion recovery process. A rigorous solution of the thermodynamics and hydrodynamics involved is beyond the scope of this report. However, a practical scheme to appraise combustion recovery performance has been Worked out. By prudent assumptions, regarding the attainment of steady-state conditions, a trial-and-error solution, which satisfies both material balance and three-phase relative permeability requirements has been evolved and tested. As a combustion zone moves through a formation the interstitial water, the water of combustion and a portion of the oil wil1 be vaporized. These vapors will move downstream to a cooler region of the formation where they will condense. Part of the remaining oil will be displaced by the imposed gas drive and what remains behind will be consumed as fuel. The fluids will distribute themselves downstrean? in a manner which will satisfy the three-phase relative permeability characteristics of the formation. Three distinct zones will exist ahead of the combustion zone: (I) a zone termed a water bank which contains three mobile phases, oil, water and gas; (2) a region containing two mobile phases, oil and gas, called the oil bank; and (3) a zone having the fluid saturution distribution which existed prior to combustion. The mobile water will impose a water flood on the oil in the region containing three flowing phases. The process can be visualized as a simultaneous water .flood and combustion-supported gas drive. It is possible to estimate the saturation distributions in the water bank and oil bank as well as the production history for any combustion temperuture if the porosity, three-phase relative permeability characteristics, oil viscosity and initial saturations are known. This has been done for injection pressures ranging from I to 100 atm, oil viscosities of 10 to 1,000 cp and porosities from 20 to 40 per cent. Several of these calculations have been checked in the laboratory, with the result indicating rather good agreement between the predicted and observed production histories. The analytical and experimental techniques are described and the comparison of predicted and observed performance presented. INTRODUCTION Considerable research by the oil industry during the past 10 years has been directed toward the thermal recovery of crude oil. Of all schemes considered, the one receiving the most attention is in situ combustion. This is a process in which part of the oil is actually burned within the reservoir rock. The uniqueness of the process lies in its potential. Theoretically, this potential generates from the following: (1) it may open the door to vast reserves previously not economically producible, (2) it may induce increased production rates where low rates are now realized and (3) it may give high over-all recovery efficiency. The general idea of the process has received considerable attention in the literature '-' and the following brief description is intended for orientation only. In situ combustion can be visualized by considering a linear system, one end of which represents the injection well and the other the producing well. The formation at the inlet end is raised to ignition temperature by placing a gas or electric heater at the face of the formation or by the ignition of thermite, charcoal or similar material. While heating, the water and part of the oil in the heated region is vaporized and moved out into the reservoir by the injection of gas containing oxygen. In addition, part of the oil is displaced as liquid by the imposed gas drive. The oil not displaced is modified to an immobile, coke-like material (hereafter referred to as coke) by the high temperatures existing immediately ahead of the combustion zone. This coke is used as fuel, and the combustion front advances through the formation at a temperature which is probably in excess of 800°F. As the combustion front advancek it will drive ahead all interstitial oil not rendered immobile and all interstitial water plus the water formed by the combustion of hydrogen. As a result the sand behind the combustion zone is freed of all oil and water. Although the general description of the process has been outlined in the literature, there has been no consideration of the behavior of the fluids moving downstream from the combustion front. The utilization of rotary kilns, of the well-known cement type, for the preparation of iron ores for the blast furnace, has become of considerable economic importance within the past 10 years in certain localities, notably those where the native ores are lean. Such kilns may be used simply for the agglomeration of ores too fine to be charged into the blast furnace (i.e., ores whose, loss in the dust catchers is excessive, and whose fineness is detrimental to the working of the furnace), or for the desulphurization of lump and fine ores the sulphur content of which does not exceed 6 or 7 per cent. The desulphurizing action can be combined with that of agglomeration provided the kiln is sufficiently large. Other processes have been developed for the same purpose, but while I am not able to draw a comparison between them by reason of lack of sufficient data, it is safe to say that the kiln, if properly dimensioned for the character of ore to be treated, will compare favorably in its results, both as to economy and quality of product, with any other process. It is not, however, as well adapted for the treatment of flue dust as is a sintering operation, on account of the large percentage of fine coke contained therein. Any combustible entering the kiln at its feed end renders the process very much more expensive and unsatisfactory on account of the difficulty of controlling the temperature, also because of the rapidity with which long "rings" form, due to the increased heat at the cooler end of the kiln. The greatest value of the kiln at present is in the treatment of pyrites cinder; that is, the residue from pyrites ore after the extraction of the greater part of the sulphur. This cinder, while high in iron content, has too much sulphur remaining in it to be allowed to form a large part of the blast-furnace burden, without further treatment. It will range in metallic iron from 42 per cent., representing a very low-grade cinder from a domestic pyrites, to 64 per cent. of the residue from the best Spanish ore, and the corresponding silica content will vary from the maximum of about 25 per cent. to 11/2 per cent. The residual sulphur depends largely on the type of burner used in the original desulphurization. In general, the leanest original ores retain the greatest amounts of sulphur. In modern practice the percentage of sulphur in the cinder is rarely as great as six, and seldom lower than one and one-half. If it does, frontal displace- ment occurs in the laboratory experiments, and oil INTRODUCTION Thc puposes of this paper are to present theoretical and experimental evidence for occurrence of macroscopic instabilities in displacement of one viscous fluid by another immiscible with it through a uniform porous medium and to compare available experimental data with some predictions of a theory of instability developed by the first author. The instabilities are referred to as macroscopic in the sense that spatially quasi-sinusoidal, growing fingers of the displacing liquid are formed, the width and peak-to-peak separation (wavelength) of which is large relative to a characteristic length of the particular permeable medium such as grain size. Visual models of two kinds have been used to obtain observations: displacement of oil by water-glycerine solutions through the flow channel formed by closely spaced parallel plates and displacement of oil by water with and without initial interstitial water through unconsolidated glass powder packs, employing the technique of matching indices of refraction. In all cases we have observed macroscopic instabilities or fingers under conditions predicted by the theory to be favorable for their occurrence. The phenomenon discussed here is not the production of streamers due to gross inhomogeneities such as permeability stratification of the porous medium. It is our object to show, on the contrary, that a quantitative prediction of finger spacing is possible in a porous medium known to be macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic throughout. The importance of the phenomenon in its influence on the configuration of oil and water with respect to oil production behavior was noted earlier by Engel-berts and Klinkenberg' who coined the term "viscous fingering". ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust-collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market outlets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer's knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk 50-ton lots direct to the consumer. POtential Markets for Fine-mesh Coal Dust In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part. To be more specific, a few of the better known operations of this type must include: colloidal-fuel plants, briquetting plants, "sea coal" distributing plants, water-purification plants and, obviously, pow-

ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust-collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market outlets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 4th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 3rd edition (1960) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstrate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Re- view. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 3rd edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these, of course, are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 11th annual meeting in 1975, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geo- logical and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications. (New Publications of the Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. 20242) and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, U.S. Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, and 1970. Three other major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, and Mineral Trade Notes. The latter is particularly good for news of foreign developments. A new Professional Paper No. 820 of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1973, summarizes data on the mineral resources of the entire country. The USGS, in cooperation with USBM, other Federal and various state agencies, has also prepared summary reports on mineral and water resources of given areas which include

AT Butte, successive zones of sericitized and argillized quartz monzonite occur around every ore-bearing fracture regardless of its size, attitude, or relative age. The two types of alteration always occupy the same relative positions; sericite adjacent to the ore-bearing vein, clay minerals always between the sericitized rock and fresh quartz monzonite, except where overlap of alteration effects between adjacent fissures has eliminated the lower grade mineralogical products, as is the case in much of Butte's Central zone of pervasive sericitization. As long as active circulation continued in the channel, each zone migrated away from the fissure, that is, it grew at its outer edge and simultaneously receded at its veinward edge because of encroachment by the next innermost zone. The different mineralogical and chemical responses within the wall rocks to the attack by the ore fluid are dependent not on a drastic about-face change of composition of the fluid in the channel relative to its ability to alter the quartz monzonite but on continuously varying conditions of physico-chemical environment within the wall rock outwardly from the vein.

Minerals long have been important commodities in international trade. As an inevitable result, the governments of the world have employed a wide variety of programs that affect the flow of trade. Roughly speaking, we may distinguish between the desire of more developed countries (MDCs) like the United States, western Europe, and Japan to control imports of minerals and the concern of less developed countries (LDCs), like India, about exploiting and exporting their minerals. The terminology used to describe different countries and the classification of specific countries into groups is unsettled and often changing. The poorest countries have been characterized as backward, undeveloped, underdeveloped, and developing. The problem seems to be in selecting a term that is both accurate and polite. Less developed seems, for reasons outlined by Hagen [pp. 51-57], the most convenient term. The borderline between an LDC and an MDC is always open to dispute. Objective measures are difficult to develop because of deficiencies in basic data, and enormous conceptual problems arise in making valid comparisons from even good data [see Hagen, pp. 7-28]. Thus, policies of the MDCs can be evaluated chiefly by using a few basic arguments for protectionist attitudes towards international trade. In dealing with the LDCs, a more far-ranging evaluation that covers general economic policy goals, the role of foreign investment, and the indirect effects of trade is required. This duality breaks down when trying to deal with the depressed areas in an MDC; here the issues are more akin to those associated with problems in an LDC. Similarly, variants of arguments used in LDCs appear in debates about foreign investments in MDCs. The whole discussion of minerals in LDCs, moreover, has obvious implications for MDCs like Canada and Australia. They, too, must face problems about the best utilization of their resources. THE CHAIRMAN.-This is the third and last session of the Institute of Metals Division's Symposium on Secondary Metals, and certainly the best of those that I have attended in the last few years. I would say that the increase in interest in secondary metals is quite noticeable by the steadily increasing attendance at these meetings. We have heard about the necessity of utilizing salvaged materials, but we still speak about them as low-grade, or down-graded materials. We still have the wrong perspective. We must willingly admit that these materials are valuable; we cannot go on using the choicest primary metals as morsels for our economic diet in a war of such unbelievable dimensions. This brings up the question-why are we so selective. The answer certainly is not that we know nothing else will do, but rather that we do not know what else will do. To be honest, we should admit our lack of knowledge concerning our complex alloys. Compared to the organic chemists, we metallurgists are very conservative, and the sooner we realize this and start to overcome it the better, because if we do not eliminate this difference, many customers of the metals business will go over to the plastics. If we take for example the development of aluminum alloys, you will see what I mean. From the binary aluminum alloys of 1920, we have progressed to ternary and quarternary alloys in the 1930's. We are only now beginning to use more complex alloys as we are forced to learn more about the effect of various elements on existing alloys. The effects of these elements should be studied now. They can be studied by two methods of approach. The usual method is to start from the base alloy and add various elements one by one in increasing amounts and study the resultant changes in properties. This is a tedious, long way. The other method which the smelters frequently use is to take the off-grade heats and study their characteristics. While the producer of primary alloys often has difficulties in alloying certain elements with the alloy under investigation, the smelter often finds them well alloyed in his raw materials and has no difficulties at all. Elements such as lead are difficult to alloy with aluminum and they tend to segregate severely. However, the amount which will remain alloyed in the metal is usually found in some "secondary" aluminum alloys. If one considers such concentration as the saturation, then by dilution with the same type of alloy, but free of such element, one can produce numerous intermediary alloys for investigation. In this fashion one is fairly certain to get uniformly spaced concentrations of the element under investigation. Similar cases probably exist with other metals. Nevertheless, the amount of work necessary to study all possible combinations is still tremendous. Necessity forces us now to utilize alloys which contain more elements than we are accustomed to. It is, therefore, necessary to study carefully the more complicated alloys. In the preparation of illustrations to accompany reports of investigations concerning particle shapes of various natural and manufactured materials proposed for use as he aggretates in concrete structures, it was found that stereoscopic views of such materials presented the information much more effectively than the usual two-dimensional photographs. With the whole-hearted cooperation of the Photographic Section, a technique was developed in the petro-graphic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss., for simple and rapid preparation of paired stereoscopic photographs and micrographs. The method requires only equipment which is usually part of the general stock of any laboratory, and it is adaptable for all purposes in which three-dimensional views would be found superior to ordinary photographs. Stereoscopic Photographs Where the subject or subjects to be photographed are small but not of microscopic size, an ordinary camera having a ground-glass focusing screen is set up vertically over the field. The material to be photographed is placed on a card, the surface of which is suitable as a background. The card is mounted so that it can be tilted about 5' above and below the horizontal plane, on an axis that coincides with the north-south diameter of the viewing screen. A simple way of achieving this is to mount the card on an object having a convex lower surface. In our laboratory, a watch-glass has been used, with plasticene as the mounting medium. The convex surface should be mounted on a support having a round opening on top and a flat bottom. A roll of tape, a petri dish, a beaker, or any other piece of equipment having the proper shape to give stability to the setup will be satisfactory. The arrangement of the required equipment is shown in Fig 1. For the best results, the subject to be photographed should be mounted in the plane of the axis of rotation. To achieve this effect, the depth of the mass of plasticene between the background and the watch-glass is varied so that when the watch-glass is tilted back and forth on the axis, the subject to be photographed does not appear to move back and forth across the viewing screen. A permanent piece of equipment, embodying an adjustable vertical screw, with lock-nuts, could be made for this purpose. The subject may be illuminated in any manner desired. It was found that the presence of shadows intensifies the effect of depth. In taking the photographs, the concave surface is mounted so that one side of the background card is about 5' below the horizontal, while the axis remains in the horizontal plane. The subject is focused carefully on the ground glass and a picture is taken. The card is then tilted so that the opposite side is about 5' below the horizontal, while the axis still remains in the horizontal plane. The subject is again put in focus and another picture is taken. THE Institute of Metals Division opened its series of meetings by a session* on lead, R. S. Dean be-ing in the chair and G. 0. Hiers acting as vice-chairman. A large and representative audience listened to the papers in the abstract and contributed an inter-esting and fruitful discussion. The main points of these papers and discussion are given below: In the absence of Carl E. Swartz, the summary and conclusions of his paper, "A Study of the Lead-Tin-Cadmium System with Reference to Their Use as Solders," were read. Swartz investigated a number of alloys in the lead-tin-cadmium system and prepared a diagram representing the solidification ranges of these alloys. He also made tensile strength tests of joints made with these alloys, and compared these with joints made with ordinary lead-tin solder. The tests showed solders containing cadmium were equally strong as the lead-tin series and that the cadmium alloys were suit-able in other respects for use as solders. In general, solders of the composition near to the ternary lead-tin-cadmium eutectic appeared to be the best for most soldering work although compositions widely differing are desirable for special purposes. The lead-tin-cad-mium solders are finding a market particularly in the fields requiring lower solidification temperatures than common solders. Mr. Darby opened the discussion and asked whether it was a fact that the lead-tin-cadmium solders were more useful than ordinary solders on galvanized and tin-plated sheet. C. Smith said he thought it to be a fact that galvanized sheet was more easily soldered by the lead-tin-cadmium solders than common lead-tin-solder. Continuing, Mr. Smith showed lantern slides of his own investigation of the thermal diagram and recommended the 70 per cent lead, 20 per cent cadmium, and 10 per cent tin for general employment. He thought the author did not differentiate between wetting and alloying and pointed out that wetting was more a ques-tion of the flux than the metal. In some cases a definite alloy was formed by soldering and in some no evidences of alloying were found. Illustrating the former case he showed slides and demonstrated that failures always took place longitudinal with the brittle compound alloy and transversely across the solder itself.

A grain boundary in a metal interacts with second-phase particles, which exert a pinning force (first estimated by Zener) on the boundary opposing its motion. We have computed the shape of boundaries which interact with more or less spherical second-phase particles and have constructed a soap-film model to reproduce the shape of the boundary surface. An important result is that measurement of this shape allows the pressure, or driving force, on the boundary to be measured. We hare applied this technique to grain boundaries in two alloys and hate measured the pinning force exerted by single second-phase jwrticles on the boundaries. It is in good agreement with Zener's estimate. J\. boundary between two grains, or two bulk phases, interacts with small inclusions or particles of a second phase, whether they are gas or solid. This interaction means that the boundary, forced to migrate by a difference in free energy between the material of the two grains or phases which it separates, exerts a force on a particle which it touches, tending to drag it forward. (The movement of inclusions through metals under the influence of this force, has, in fact, been observed. 1-3) Equally, the particle can be thought of as exerting a pinning force on the boundary, tending to hold it back. Zener (in a celebrated private communication4) first realized that this interaction, and the resulting pinning force, existed. His calculation of its magnitude was crude but adequate: a spherical inclusion of radius r blanks off an area nr2 of the boundary on which it sits; since the boundary has an energy of rMM x per unit area, the blanlung-olf decreases the energy of the system by MM: this energy is returned to the system if the boundary is pulled free from the inclusion— a forward movement of the boundary by a distance r will do this—so that the maximum pinning force is Trrym.M- A similar argument can be made for inter-phase boundaries. The nature of the particle itself did not enter this, or two subsequent treatments.5,6 When it is considered, tic leifthe energyoftheb a) The boundary may enter and pass through the particle if the energy of the boundary is lower within the particle than in the matrix. Fig. l(r/). Certain coherent precipitate particles behave like this. h) More usually, the boundary will bend round the particle, enveloping and bypassing it. Fig. l(b). In doing so, it changes the structure and energy of the interface between the particle and its matrix. This means that the boundary does not touch the particle surface at right angles, as early treatments assumed,5'9 but at some angle a which depends on this change in surface energy of the particle, and can be calculated from the equilibrium of surface tensions. Most precipitate particles and inclusions behave like this. Gas bubbles or liquid drops can be regarded as belonging to either group. The progress of bypassing is conveniently measured by the angle shown in Fig. 1. When the nature of the particle is ignored, its maximum pinning force is exerted when - 45 deg. When it is considered, this critical value of is found to depend on a and thus on the nature of the particle. The maximum pinning force lies between nryMM and 2jtjMM (Appendix 1). not very different from Zener's result. In reality, a boundary between crystals has a specific energy and tension which varies with the orientation of the boundary. Furthermore, recent experiments7 indicate that such a boundary is not atom-ically smooth, but has steps on it: migration of the boundary corresponds to the sweeping of these steps across the boundary surface, like the Frank model of crystal growth from the vapor. This means that the interaction of a boundary with particles should really be considered in terms of the way in which particles hinder the movement of these steps. To suppose a grain boundary or interphase boundary to be smooth, and to ignore the variation of its energy with orientation, is to liken it to a soap film. The advantage of this soap film approximation, which we have used throughout this paper, is that interaction energies and boundary shapes can be calculated easily. We have done this by numerical computation and by using a soap film model, and have compared the results with grain boundaries in an aluminum-based and a copper-based alloy. It turns out that the shape of the boundary which bulges between particles allows the pressure an it to be calculated; that is, the local driving force an the boundary can be measured. This has allowed us to check the Zener relationship experimentally.
