The writer has carried on experimental work for several years with respect to the simultaneous dissolution of gold by cyanide and the adsorption of the dissolved gold on activated charcoal in ore pulps, followed by the recovery of the charcoal by flotation. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encouraging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its possible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale. Early Experimental Work In the early stages of the experimental work attempts were made to precipitate soluble gold from cyanide solutions with zinc and aluminum in ore pulps followed by flotation of the precipitated gold, but since the results were not promising enough to continue with these precipitants attention was directed to carbon. The first experiments with carbon comprised the addition of cyanide and alkali to the ore pulp, the addition of carbon at or near the end of the dissolving period, and the recovery of the carbon by flotation. With this method of procedure the assumption was made that carbon functioned as a precipitant of gold from cyanide solutions and as such should be added as are other precipitants, including zinc and aluminum; namely, at the end of the dissolution period. The assumption was then made that carbon functioned as an adsorbent, and that if such assumption proved to be correct, it could be added with success to the ore pulp at the time of adding the cyanide. The first experiment along this line was successful in that the feasibility of the dissolution of gold by cyanide and the simultaneous extraction of the dissolved gold by carbon in ore pulps was demonstrated, at least with respect to such treatment on a laboratory scale.

MAGNETITE deposits in the Eastern States have been mined uninterruptedly since pre-Revolutionary War days. The industry, thriving in normal times, was given impetus in all periods of tumult, and continued to advance and expand, until the Lake Superior ores came into production. A period of comparative quiet existed until increased freight rates, together with increased mining costs on Lake Region ores, permitted the magnetites again to compete. This, coupled with World War demands, created unpre¬cedented activity. Producing plants were at their peak, new mines were equipped and put in operation and the industry pushed production beyond the absorption point. Ore stocks were tremendous, internal competition severe, and a great increase in import of European ores brought the industry to a low ebb in 1923.

BLANDFORD. C. BURGESS, the new Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division, took the advice of Horace Greeley in reverse-he turned his hack on San Francisco and the Golden Gate, and after a few side excursions toward Alaska and Arizona, hit the trail eastward, not for the lonesome pine, but for Spruce Pine, N. C. Born Aug. 10, 1893, in San Francisco. Burgess found his first job, shortly after finishing high school at 19, as axeman for a surveying party of engineers working for the Southern Pacific Co. in Oregon. Later he moved on up with them into Alaska. He liked the engineering profession, and decided to equip himself further so he entered the University of California in the fall of 1913. and for the next two years devoted himself to acquiring an education in civil engineering.

In reporting results of precipitation hardening experiments, it is customary to include such conditions as solution heat-treatment temperature, specimen size, and quench medium as well as the aging time and temperature. One portion of thermal history that is often overlooked is the effect of the heating rate employed to achieve the aging temperature. It is the intent of this note to demonstrate the importance of the rate of heating to aging temperatures. This work was carried out on the aluminum alloy 7075 aged at 162oC, a temperature commonly used to obtain stress corrosion resistant tempers. A 2 in. thick plate of 7075 was quenched into 24°C water after solution heat-treatment for 2 hr at 470°C. Approximately 13 in. around the periphery of the plate was discarded to minimize quench rate variations, and the remainder was divided into 0.5 by 1.8 by 2.0 in. blocks which were held at room temperature, 24oC, for 4 days. This aging, or incubation period, at room temperature allowed a copious supply of GP-zones to form. Blocks were then heated at various rates to 162oC using the practices shown in Table I. Both single- and two-step aging practices were employed for each heating rate. The single step consisted of heating directly to temperature at the indicated rate while the two-stage practice included an interruption of heating for 7 hr at 107°C. In the case of the two-stage 100°C per min heating rate experiment, the specimens were returned to room temperature after 7 hr at 107°C where they were held for 16 hr be-fore finally heating at this rate to 162°C. This devia-tion in practice is not considered to be significant. Blocks were removed after various times at 162oC, and aging curves were determined from duplicate R. F. ASHTON and D. S. In the Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefor?, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 Ib. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of ovcr 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 Ib. per sq. ft. of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to he given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam arc appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent. At the above-mentioned mines, electric motors have replaced the many small steam engines, so that this supply of exhaust steam has been practically eliminated. The larger engines are compound, triple, or quadruple condensing. The hoists, however, in all cases are simple and non-condensing and of two sizes, namely, 24 by 60 in. and 32 by 72 in. (61 by 152 cm. and 81 by 183 cm.). These hoists now offer the only available supply of exhaust steam; but as this flow is intermittent and varies from extreme violence to zero, the steam so discharged cannot be

THIS paper is a preliminary statement, intended to present the more important results of the recent studies of the ore deposits of the Alleghany district in advance of the publication of the complete report, now in preparation. The Alleghany district (Fig. 1) has been a producer of gold since the early days of California gold mining. As in other California gold camps, placers yielded the bulk of the earlier production, but during the last 30 years lode deposits have been the only important source of output. The district differs from other California gold-quartz districts in that nearly all the production is from small shoots of high-grade ore. The mining camps of Alleghany and Forest are on the western flank of the Sierra Nevada range about 20 miles west of the crest. The gently sloping lava-covered plateau which controls the upland topography has been trenched by deep canyons of the westward flowing streams, which are cut to depths of as much as 2000 ft. below the crests of the ridges. The district is about 18 miles from Nevada City but the automobile road which connects the two places is 31 miles long. The senior writer first visited the district in 1913 and published a short description of the lode deposits.1 The increasing importance of the district made further study desirable. A detailed topographic map was therefore made by W. B. Upton, Jr., of the U. S. Geological Survey, in the spring of 1924, and the senior writer spent parts of the field seasons of 1924 and 1925 in the district. For the second field season the Geological Survey was fortunate in securing the services of R. W. Gannett, who had already done geologic work in the district for several of the mining companies. Owing to the death of Mr. Gannett in October, 1925, just before the close of his field work, the work of preparation of the entire report fell to Mr. Ferguson. He takes this opportunity of acknowledging how deeply he is indebted to Mr. Gannett for his excellent work in the field, and his realization of how greatly the completion of the report on the district has suffered from lack of Mr. Gannett's assistance in the office. In October, 1.928, after the completion of the first draft of the manuscript, Mr. Ferguson made a short visit to the district.

Few people realize the extent to which the 'old timers' are still the backlog of the important districts." --Fred Searls, Jr. • A new filter has been developed by Arthur D. Little, Inc., for the ABC which will remove all dust from the air. Submicroscopic asbestos fibers are used as filter media and are claimed to stop all dust and pollen while passing suitable quantities of air. •Out in front public relationswise is the Peabody Coal Co. which has launched a 15-min television news program on WNBQ at 10:30 C.S.T., Tuesday and Thursday nights. Clifton Utley, news commentator, will tell how coal is mined today and indicate, with pictures, the improvement in efficiency and safety which has resulted from today's mechanized operations. •Two hundred coal mining companies are using roof bolts as a means of supporting about 14 million sq ft of roof surface, Edward Thomas of the Bureau of Mines reported. Various types of metal and wooden pins can be used. The method was first used by the St. Joseph Lead Co. over 20 years ago, but is now being studied and adopted widely in metal, nonmetallic, and coal mines. * The first ten technical graduates have reported at Hanford Works in the state of Washington, to begin the newly installed General Electric rotational training program, believed to be the first of its kind at any U.S. atomic energy plant. The program is to provide suitably trained personnel for the nation's atomic energy program. •The need for top-notch scientists and engineers to stimulate mining programs in British colonies is acute. About 60 American experts are being sought for the ECA sponsored program. Positions for mining engineers, geologists, assayers, topographers, and petrologists are open. •Production of primary aluminum for the first quarter of 1950 was 322,4250008 lb which is 6 1/2 million lb more than was produced in the first quarter of 1949. Shipments of aluminum sheet, plate, and strip amounted to 259.772,1571b for the first quarter. •Policy on manganese procurement for the stockpile is being studied by a House Armed Services Subcommittee with the possibility of lowering specifications. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is drafting a bill to encourage domestic production for stockpiling through producer subsidies. 'It will have to be cleared by the Bureau of the Budget and other agencies before going to Congress. •Oil men consider dry holes a necessary evil in their search for oil. Last year 34 out of every 100 wells drilled were dry holes. Yet Texas Technological College is attempting to drill a dry hole on its campus at Lubbock, taking every precaution to make sure it is a "duster" so its petroleum engineering students can play around with experiments without being bothered by any messy crude oil. --Natural Resources Notes. •A portable alertness indicator which signals lethargy in persons doing monotonous jobs has been developed for the Navy's Special Devices Center. A possible application to hoistmen is indicated but broaching the matter to them would be tricky.

The central power-station of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to arrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been made to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Company), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. IT. General Considerations. The climate is hot and dry. The region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all.

Roof, pillar and floor stability is a most important requirement in underground coal mines because it represents the leading cause of fatalities. In future coal mine planning the geotechnical aspects must often be minimized owing to unavailability of data. It is, therefore, very important to include a geotechnical investigation as part of the coal exploration program. Data which should be collected basically include the geological discontinuity characteristics, the rock strength characteristics and the groundwater aspects. Many times the only source of such data is the exploration boreholes. Therefore, an emphasis must be made to extract the maximum information from the core and the borehole. Data collection methods can include the preparation of detailed geotechnical logs for the roof, coal and floor. Laboratory strength testing will provide estimates of the mechanical properties of the various lithologic types. Slaking and swelling tests provide an insight into the stability characteristics of the rock materials immediately enclosing the coal seam. The boreholes may be used to provide permeability and pressurization data. Having developed a suitable geotechnical data base allows various stability prediction methods to be used. These include a geotechnical appraisal of the roof and floor units, depositional environment methods, multiple overlay techniques, hazard analysis techniques and classification/rating systems for roof and floor. The basic geotechnical data and the stability prediction methods form a basis upon which preliminary rock mechanics designs may be developed. Of particular importance to future coal mining are those designs relating to longwall mining because most companies are thinking in terms of the greater safety and greater productivity offered by longwalls. Items which should be ad- dressed when considering a longwall system include the panel layout in terms of a total mining plan, strata mechanics, roof/floor bearing capacities, face support requirements, face length, entry and pillar

The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity. 1,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water-only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavymedia cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit. The System The system chosen for study [(shown schematically in Fig. 1)] comprises two stages: a primary stage (PI) consisting of water-only cyclones, and a secondary stage (P2) consisting of heavy media cyclones. The water-only cyclones separate raw coal at a low specific gravity, producing a relatively small amount of high quality clean coal and a refuse containing much good coal. This refuse is then recleaned in the secondary stage, where the sharper separation of heavy media cyclones, operated at a higher specific gravity, reclaims additional clean coal. Finally, the clean coal from both stages is combined as the system's clean coal, while the refuse from the secondary stage becomes the system's refuse output. Theoretical Analysis Two assumptions lie behind the following theoretical analysis. The first assumption is that partition curves can represent not only the performance of each stage but also the performance of the system as a whole. These curves show partition number as a function of specific gravity, where partition number is either the percent or fraction of a raw coal with a given specific gravity reporting to clean coal. The second assumption is that these curves are independent of the raw coal characteristics. At any specific gravity the system's partition number is solely a function of the partition numbers of each stage. For convenience, we use the following variables in describing this relationship: g = specific gravity, PS(g) = the partition number of the system at specific gravity g, P1(g) = the partition number of the primary stage at specific gravity g, P2(g) = the partition number of the secondary stage at a specific gravity g. For this system, we can show algebraically that the relationship is: [Ps (g) = PI (g) + (1- P1(g)) P2 (9)(1)] With this equation the system's partition curve can be determined if the partition curves of each stage are known. By definition, the partition numbers P1(g) and P2(g) must each be less than, or equal to, one. Placing these constraints on Eq. (1), we arrive at the relations: [Ps(g) % P1(g) and Ps(g) % P2(g)(2)] Thus, at any specific gravity the system's partition number is always greater than that of both stages. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc.* When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Dorr and H. A. Guess. George D. Barron will succeed Mr. Guess as trustee at the end of this year. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn. The Engineering Foundation The Engnieering Foundation was established in 1814 as a result of a gift of $200,000 made by Ambrose Swasey. It is intended not only "for the Furtherance of research" along broad lines but also "for the advancement of" a wide variety of other activities of benefit to engineering as need arises. The endowment fund, which now amounts to $630,000, is administered by the United Engineering Trustees, Inc. Through The Engineering Foundation board, on which the Institute is now represented by J. V. N. Dorr, John M. Callow and Galen H. Clevenger, the income of the endowment, approximately $28,000 a year, and funds contributed for special projects are appropriated for the purposes intended. H. C. Bellinger will succeed Mr. Callow on the board at the end of this year. Alfred D. Flinn is Secretary- and Director. Researches of wide interest in many lines have been aided by Engineering Foundation. . A grant from it to the Mining Methods Committee assisted in the preparation of Volume 72 of the Transactions. For several years the Foundation has aided in support of the study of Blast-furnacc Slags by R. 8. McCaffery at the University of Wisconsin, sponsored by the Institute. The Foundation has raised over $230,000 to support the Alloys of Iron Research endorsed by the Institute and George B. Water-house is serving as Chairman and Director of the Iron Alloys Committee which has been brought together to direct this work. The Foundation has also on recommendation of the Institute made a grant in aid of the studies of Mining and Strata being conducted at Columbia University by P. B. Bucky, which promise information of great usefulness relative to mine subsidence and support of ground. John Fritz Medal Board of Award The medal was established in 1902 and lias since, been awarded not oftener than annually by a hoard of sixteen members, four representatives each from the American Societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers.

The material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

Ross The first meeting of the Columbia Section was held on March 24, as a part of the 1916 Northwest Mining Convention which was held under the -auspices of the Spokane Mining Men's Club assisted by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the technical program being in charge of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association assisted by the local sections of the A. I. E. E., A. S. C. E., and A. I. M. E. The program of the successive sessions was carefully arranged with view to its application to mining, and in addition to the technical program there were exhibits of ores, minerals, devices, etc., of interest to the delegates, who numbered over 500. A portion of the program was also arranged with special reference to the requirements of the prospector and miner. A reception, a banquet, a complimentary luncheon, a regular daily call' of the Stock Exchange, a visit to the High Schools and to one of the substations of the Washington Water Power Company and to the Union Iron Works kept the visitors entertained, the ladies being looked after by a special committee of ladies who held open house during the entire week. Several important resolutions were passed by the Convention and one by the Columbia Section, A. 1. M. E. With Stanly A. Easton, chairman, presiding, the Columbia Section, American Institute of Mining Engineers, occupied the time between 2.00 and 5.30 p.m., March 24th, the Moorish room of the Spokane hotel being filled with members and their guests. "The Apex Law and the Mineral Surveyor" was a paper presented by F. W. Callaway and generally dis-cussed because of its local application in the Coeur d'Alenes, the conclusions being reached after expensive litigation between two of the large mining operators in that district.

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain varia-tions in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates it some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity, crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. INTRODUCTION When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfulls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the differ-ent mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accu-racy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results.

A review of Jones & Laughlin's Vesta coal preparation plant flowsheet in 1959 indicated that, of the three sizes making up the company's metallurgical product, the -48-mesh fraction offered the greatest potential for improvement. Efforts to improve quality and yield were directed toward the use of froth flotation. After laboratory and plant tests were completed, it was decided that treatment of the entire -@-mesh fraction of the coal mix by flotation was a significant step forward in providing better coal quality and recovery. Reduction of ash in the metallurgical coal from 6.75 to 6.25% provided material savings at the coal washer, coke plant and blast furnace. The Vesta preparation plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. is located on the Monongahela River, eight miles south of Brownsville, Pa. This plant is capable of cleaning 2400 tph of a mixture of Pittsburgh seam high volatile coals from the Vesta and Shannopin mines to produce a metallurgical coal of 6.75% ash and a steam coal containing 14% ash. Heavy media vessels are utilized to upgrade the coarse coal while launders and tables handle the -1/4-in. fraction of the raw coal feed. Cleaned -1/4-in. coal goes to boot classifiers where the 48 mesh material settles and is removed by bucket elevators. This 1/4x48 mesh material is then sent to centrifugal dryers for dewatering. As designed, the -48 mesh fraction overflows the boot as a 7 to 8% solids slurry and is recovered by cyclones and a thickener and then dewatered by filtration. The products of the heavy media circuit, the launder-table-boot-dryer circuit and the cyclone-thickener-filter circuit, are combined to constitute the shipped metallurgical coal. The Vesta-Shannopin mix is combined at Jones & Laughlin's Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works with purchased low and medium volatile coals for the production of metallurgical coke. A review of the preparation plant flowsheet in 1959 indicated that of the three sizes making up the metallurgical product, the -48-mesh fraction, containing 16.7% ash, offered the greatest potential for improvement of coal quality. This fraction was considered low, averaging 55%, while the rejects averaged only 33% ash. It was evident that while the boot overflow fraction represented only 6% of the product mix, a reduction in ash to 6 or 7% would reduce the ash of the metallurgical coal by 0.5%. The original plant flowsheet handling the boot overflow (Fig. 1) consisted of ten 14-in. cyclones treating 70% of the overflow and producing a 48x150-mesh underflow and a -150-mesh overflow. The cyclone overflow was combined with the remaining 30% of the boot overflow to constitute the feed to a 150-ft thickener. The cyclone underflow and the 48x325-mesh thickener underflow were fed to vacuum disk filters for dewatering prior to combination with the coarse metallurgical coal. The thickener overflow stream containing the -325-mesh material was split, 40% being recycled directly to the plant water system and 60% being flocculated and clarified in an 85-ft thickener. The underflow of this thickener was pumped to waste. Efforts to improve quality and yield on the -48-mesh coal were directed toward the use of froth flotation early in the investigation. A review of the fine coal flowsheet indicated that three streams should be considered for treatment by froth flotation. These were the -325-mesh thickener overflow, the -150-mesh cyclone overflow and the -48-mesh boot overflow. Flotation of the thickener overflow was considered basically to improve recovery by upgrading the reject stream so that it could be fed to the filters along with the thickener and cyclone underflows. The overflow from the thickener contained 3.7% solids and had an ash analysis of 33%. Flotation of the cyclone overflow and boot overflow were considered to upgrade coal quality as well as yield. Treatment of the cyclone overflow, a 5.4% solids slurry averaging 27% ash, would eliminate the coal thickener and provide a feed of flotation concentrate and cyclone underflow to the filters. WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.

A NATIVE son of Salt Lake City. David Douglas Moffat has contributed greatly to both the mineral industries and civic progress in the State of Utah. He was born in 1880 and his whole life bas been intimately associated with mining and milling. His father, one of Utah's pioneer mining men, was superintendent of a mill at Park City. When Moffat was only 18 years of age he went to Philipsburg Mont., where he spent several years as a machinist, and later as master mechanic for the Granite Bi-Metallic Mining Co. He returned to Park City in 1903 as master mechanic and night mill foreman for the Ontario Silver Mining Co. After a few years of varied experience he became, in 1910. general foreman of the Boston Consolidated Will at Garfield, Utah.

INTRODUCTION From the lender's point of view, the greatest period of risk in a project financing occurs during the construction phase. Therefore, most projects are supported during this phase by completion guarantees supplied by some credit-worthy entity; for example, the project sponsors in the case of a joint venture, such as that of W.R. Grace, Hanna Mining, and Liberty Capital; or by a strong contract with a utility or foreign importer/investor, such as the way North American Coal Corporation has structured many of its transactions. THE PROJECT LOAN REQUEST A project financing is a more complex form of term loan than one using an ongoing corporation's balance sheet as a credit base and, therefore, a potential lender will subject the loan request to a more rigorous analysis. To support this effort, the financial institution will require a more detailed information memorandum to evaluate the credit and technical risks of a project - especially since much of the necessary information is not otherwise available. (See also Gibbs and Sroka paper above in this Chapter) A well-prepared information memorandum will impress prospective lenders with the planning ability and general competence of management. Also, the process of preparing the memorandum will help management understand the true extent of the opportunities and limitations of its venture. Appendix A outlines the topics which comprise a complete information memorandum for a loan request. Of some interest to those seeking to sell a currently-operating mining venture, a similar information memorandum should be prepared i.e., covering the same topics discussed here, for the investment banker to use with potential purchasers. For that purpose, though, one might not want to prepare quite as much detail as for a lender. Appendix B outlines the elements of a reserve evaluation and feasibility study, often called the "Bankable Document." Usually, these studies are prepared by independent engineering consultants for use by potential borrowers and sellers. (Potential purchasers will often contract for a similar study for their use in evaluating an acquisition.) ELEMENTS OF A LOAN INFORMATION MEMORANDUM 1. Outline: The information memorandum should begin with a one-page outline covering such topics as: a. The borrower's name, address, and phone number. b. Principal contact at the borrower. c. Amount of the proposed financing. d. Desired pricing and structure of the proposed financing. This should include a description of the amount and source of equity in the proposed financing. e. Use of the proceeds and timing. 2. Summary: The most important information contained in the memorandum should be summarized in two pages. Note - If the borrower is a recently-formed single-purpose company, then elements 3, 4, and 5 will apply to the guarantors of completion and to the project sponsors. 3. The Borrower: This section is a brief biography of the borrower including such topics as date and state of incorporation, founder(s), lines of business, etc. 4. Capitalization: The borrower's current debt and equity position, including leases and trade debt, with amounts, terms, names, and addresses enumerated. Equity owners, and percentage ownership, should be identified. 5. Historical Financial Statements: If available, a minimum of five year's worth of complete historical financial statements
