By using a computer for all evaluations and planning work the optimal recovery of material is arrived at and a quarry layout - and machinery is decided upon. The result will be uniform production throughout the lift of the deposits using a rationally chosen quarry equipment.

DuRing the year of 1937, the East Texas district produced 211,194,467 hbl. of oil and marketed more than 22,329 million cu. ft. of gas; 3377 oil and gas wells were completed. During this same period 106 exploratory wells were drilled, discovering three new oil fields and one gas-distillate field. Fields East Texas Field.—The East Texas field again led the district as to production and number of wells completed. During the year, 2420 oil wells were completed, making a total of 24,382 producing wells, which produced 171,336,854 bbl. of oil, for a total of 1,156,352,834 bbl. since the beginning. During the year the average bottom-hole pressure dropped 49 lb., making the average bottom-hole pressure 1119 lb. Approximately 3500 wells are making salt water, 20 per cent of them making over 80 per cent of the water. During the month of December, the daily average production of salt water was 119,000 barrels. Talco Field, Titus and Franklin Counties.—The Talco field produced 9,780,948 bbl. of oil during the year, from 637 wells. During the year 472 wells were completed. All of the wells are pumping and 241 are making salt water. This field has followed a normal development and did not exceed the estimated number of acres reported last year. Rodessa Field, Cuss and Marion Counties.—The Rodessa field was extended about 13 miles southwest into Marion County, which added approximately 4000 acres to the field. During the year 260 wells were completed, making a total of 416 producing wells, which produced 12,646,-970 bbl. of oil. The author was unable to obtain figures for the amount of gas produced. The field has two gasoline plants, which had a daily average of 16,558,000 cu. ft. of gas during December, averaging 0.83 gal. per M cu. ft. As of Jan. 1, 31 wells were making salt water. In the summer of 1842 my father, William Firmstone, was engaged by Charles Jackson, Jr., of Boston, to examine the conditions in the Lehigh valley as a site for blast-furnaces using anthracite for fuel. In consequence of his report, he was further engaged by Mr. Jackson to build a furnace for him and his partners on the Lehigh canal, 2 miles above the mouth of the river at Easton. Work was begun in the fall of 1842, and the first furnace blown-in in 1844. The history of the works, therefore, from 1844 to 1887, when my own connection with them ceased, covers only four years less than the whole period of the rise, culmination, and commencement of the decline in the smelting of iron with anthracite in America, the beginning of which, in a commercial sense, may be put in 1839.' Although this paper, as the title indicates, is concerned almost exclusively with the furnaces at Glendon, still what was done there was more or less influenced by current opinion in the district, and even reflects, to some extent, the changes in opinion and practice with mineral fuel the world over. No. 1 Furnace was built of red brick, on four piers, had three tuyeres and fore-hearth and tymp, as was universal with furnaces using mineral fuel until the introduction of Lurmann's cinder-tuyere. The dimensions and profile are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The first hearth (Fig. 1) was of sandstone; all after were of fire-brick (Fig. 2). The profile was no doubt derived directly from Gibbons's furnace,2 for it appears from W. Firmstone's note-books that in October, 1840, he visited " Gibbons' new furnaces building at Corbyn Hall," and I have an old drawing,

The main difficulty in the determination of silicon in pig-irons containing very high percentages of that element, has been due to their almost complete insolubility in acids, or mixtures of acids. The object of the present paper, which presents no new principle, is to suggest a method of determination which has repeatedly given accurate results, and which obviates completely the tediousness and uncertainty of the usual slow solution in acids. This method has been tried with pig-irons containing from 7 to 14 per cent. of combined silicon, and properly called ferro-silicons. When reduced to an impalpable powder in the agate mortar, an 11 per cent. ferro-silicon was found to resist the action of all acids, or mixtures of acids, with the exception of sulphuric acid of about 1.25 specific gravity. But the action of this acid, even during long continued heating, was very slow, 72 hours being necessary to com pletely dissolve half a gramme of the metal. The complete decomposition of 1 gramme of the metal may, on the other hand, readily he effected in a few minutes by fusion with sodium carbonate in a covered platinum crucible over a blast-lamp —the idea being to dissolve the silicon, leaving the iron in condi tion to be readily attacked by acids. Rates of heat- and mass-transfer from rods to recirculating air were determined within a one-quarter-scale model of a metals deposition bulb. The dependence of local and averaged rates of transfer upon outlet geometry, number of rods, position upon a rod, and airflow rate was established for flow patterns created by radial and tangential air inlets. The results are given a qualitative interpretation in terms of rates and distribution of metal deposition in a prototype deposition bulb. IT is well known that a number of metals can be prepared from volatile compounds containing them by causing dissociation of their compounds to occur at heated surfaces. Examples of such metals include silicon, titanium, zirconium, and aluminum, which can be prepared from their halides. While the ability to prepare high-purity metals by this technique is of importance in itself, the rate of deposition of metal also is important in considering the commercial potential of such a process. If the over-all process of deposition is broken down into separate steps of transport of materials to and from the heated deposition surface and establishment of chemical equilibrium at the surface, as was described in a recent paper,1 then since surface temperatures are usually high and surface equilibrium is attained very rapidly, the rate-controlling step can be considered as either that of transport of reactants to the surface or of transport of products other than deposited metal away from the surface. These two transport steps are related through the reaction stoichiometry. It can be shown1 that the rate and distribution of metal in such a transport-controlled process are determined by the over-all and local mass-transfer coefficients in conjunction with the equilibrium conversions at the hot surfaces. The rate relationship is: w = [KA(y a-y s)] B.E where the bracketed group is the rate of arrival of the reactant at the surface of area A as determined by the mole fraction driving force (y a - y s) and the convective transport constant K. The factor B is the weight fraction of metal in the reactant, and E is the equilibrium fractional conversion to metal. Numerical values of y, and y, are fixed by the vapor composition and the equilibrium compositim of reactant at the surface; and E can be determined by thermodynamic calculations or by experiment. However, values for the convective coefficient K are available generally only for systems of simple geometry, such as cross-flow past a rod or sphere or parallel flow past a flat plate or through a tube. Often it is necessary to work with systems of more complex geometry and in which the vapor flow may not be uniform or exactly parallel or perpendicular to the surface. It is possible, of course, to establish working correlations for these more complex systems by direct experiment; but the experiments usually are costly in both time and money. To circumvent this objection and to aid in arriving at an understanding of the relationships and interactions of the process variables, it is helpful to construct a model of the flow system in which air, water, or other convenient fluids can be substituted for the process vapors and with which mass-transfer measurements or analogous he at-transfer measurements can be made upon a simulated deposition surface. By this means, a large number of measurements can be made in a reasonable time, and the correlation of these results can be applied to the prototype system. Examples of the application of these techniques are to be found in the literature (e.g., Ref. 2). It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate these techniques by description of a model study which was done at Battelle Memorial Institute. The work to be described was of a preliminary nature; the investigation subsequently was extended to develop quantitative relationships among the significant dimensionless transport, geometric, and flow parameters. This more detailed study will be the subject of a future paper.

The purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on: (I) methods of supporting the immediate roof, particularly of local areas of poor roof, during the mechanical loading of coal; (2) methods of increasing the rapidity of the movement of the mining faces so that, without the use of cribs, jacks, park walls, and filling, there will be no danger to men, equipment, and working places from the subsidence of the overlying strata. In the Pittsburgh district the application of mechanical loading devices in mines working in the Pittsburgh seam has been retarded by the difficulties of holding and handling the draw slate. Normally the thickness of this slate averages about 8 in. but the hardness varies, and a cut of coal cannot always be loaded without placing posts or crossbars to support the slate. Locally, the slate may be thicker and special methods of support may be required. If crossbars are placed to hold the slate when the coal averages 5 ft. in thickness, the standard methods of transporting the coal cannot be followed, and the use of conveyors may be desirable. Very little information is available on the effect of increasing the rate of movement of advancing or retreating break lines or longwall faces. A few British publications have presented some data but all such data relate to longwall faces that have moved not more than 6 ft. a day. The most rapid rate of movemerit of longwall faces in Germany is 6 ft. per day. In the ordinary hand-loading mine in western Pennsylvania break lines on full retreat will move about 2 ft. per day. If loading machines are used under similar conditions the rate of retreat may reach 4 ft. per day. In a mine where coal is loaded by hand on conveyors three shifts per day, the rate of retreat has ranged from 11 to 16 ft. per day, with an average of 13 ft. A method to determine in situ stress directions and magnitudes from anelastic strain recovery measurements of oriented core has been used to determine the principal horizontal in situ stresses in the Rollins Sandstone in a deep well near Rifle, Colorado. The principal horizontal stress directions were determined directly from the principal horizontal strain recovery directions. The principal horizontal stress magnitudes were calculated from the principal strain recovery magnitudes, overburden stress, and Poison's ratio of the rock using a viscoelastic model. The accuracy of the in situ stress directions and magnitudes determined from anelastic strain recovery measurements was substantiated by a direct comparison with open-hole hydraulic fracture stress measurements. The anelastic strain recovery method predicted the magnitudes of the maximum and minimum horizontal principal stresses to be 54.5 MPa and 51.9 MPa, respectively; with an azimuth of N63ºW ± 8º for the maximum horizontal stress. The hydraulic fracture stress measurements yielded maximum and minimum horizontal principal stress magnitudes of 49.6 MPa and 46.8 MPa, respectively. The azimuth of the maximum horizontal stress ranged from N50ºW to N70°W.

The electrical resistivity and the temperature coefficient of resistivity were measured with a potentiometric method using pure mercury as a reference material. Measurements were made nea,v roorn temperature. A detailed study was made of Hg,TI, near its melting temperature. THE work to be described was originally undertaken to provide the necessary data for interpreting the results of some optical experiments,' but because of the growing importance of liquid metals,273 it appeared that the results of the resistivity measurements should be published separately. For convenience the alloys selected were those which are liquid at room temperature. Special consideration was given to the Hg-T1 alloy closely corresponding to Hg,Tl, because recent X-ray diffraction results of Smallman and Frost seemed to show that the solid structure may persist to some extent into the 1iquid. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A potentiometric method was employed in which the resistivity of mercury was used as a reference. The essential features of the samples are shown in Fig. 1. A capillary tube CT with a bore of approximately 1.5 mm was fitted into two end cups, T, which were made of Teflon. A pair of current electrodes CE were immersed into the excess liquid metal which partly filled the end cups. The potential electrodes PE were inserted into CT through short pieces N of a no. 18 hypodermic needle held in place with Saureisen cement SC. As shown, the lower ends of the PE7s were reduced in diameter to 0.25 mm to minimize the distortion of the liquid metal cross section. Several methods were used to insert an alloy into the sample, but the usual one with mercury alloys was to fill the sample container with a weighed quantity of pure mercury* and then add weighed the sample tube in a vacuum. Because of rapid corrosion, samples containing gallium were of necessity prepared in a vacuum. To obtain the specific resistivity of an alloy the resistance of the sample containing the alloy was measured and compared with the resistance when the container was filled with mercury. Resistances were measured in the temperature range of 20" to 60°C to obtain the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical measurements were made by connecting the sample in series with the standard one-ohm resistance, and the potential drop measured alternately over the sample and the standard resistance. To correct for stray thermoelectric effects provision was made for reversing the direction of the current, and the true potential drop was taken to be the average of that obtained for the two directions of current flow. Various materials were used for the electrodes, the most uniform results being obtained with nickel. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The numerical results are presented graphically in Figs. 2 and 3 and in tabular form in Tables I and 11. (con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble. When austenite first forms from aggregates of cementite and ferrite, it is not homogeneous.' This inhomogeneity, consisting of both undissolved carbide and carbon concentration gradients, has a profound effect upon the characteristics of the austenite-pearlite reaction. The rate of formation of pearlite is increased by the presence of inhomogeneities2,3 and because of this (when the inhomogeneity is sufficiently pronounced) the hardenability of the steel is reduced.4,5 In addition to this kinetic effect, inhomogeneities will cause the direct formation of spheroidite from austenite at temperatures just below the Ael.6-11 The present report attempts quantitatively to evaluate the effect of inhomogeneity upon the rate of the austenite-pearlite reaction, presents a method of determining the austenitizing cycle necessary to obtain "practical homogenization," and considers the effect of inhomogeneity on hardenability. Effect of Inhomogeneities on Reactions Near Ae1 Few quantitative data are available representing the effect of undissolved carbide or of carbon concentration gradients upon the rate of the austenite-pearlite reaction. In procuring such data it is necessary to separate the effect of undissolved carbide from that of grain size, and this is not an easy task. The solution of carbide is always accompanied by an increase in the grain size, both effects contributing to the retardation of the reaction rate. It has been possible to make this separation and to obtain data that are independent of the grain size by the use of steels that differ only with respect to their tendency toward grain-coarsening. Steels C and D in Table I are such steels. These steels have been studied previously ;l,2,12 they differ only with respect to deoxidation practice; C was deoxidized with silicon while D, teemed from a portion of the same heat, was deoxidized with additional auantities of aluminum in the mold. C therefore is what is normally termed a "coarse-grained steel" and D is a, "fine-grained steel." These steels can be compared at the same grain size by heating c to a low temperature and heating D to an elevated temperature, producing a structure of austenite plus residual carbide in the former while forming homogeneous austenite in the latter; in such
