The formation of thin films of silicon oxide by anodic oxidation of silicon and the subsequent removal of these films by an etch is a process often used for the evaluation of concentration distributions Profiles) in silicon layers by the differential sheet conductance method. The accuracy of the resulting profile is very strongly influenced by the uniformity of the thickness of the reacted silicon. Normally, it would be expected that for a constant number of coulombs passed the thickness would be the same from oxidation to oxidation. Investigations show that in certain electrolytes, for a given number of coulombs passed through an n-type silicon sample, the thickness of the reacted silicon increased with increasing resistivity. Even for the same resistivity the thickness varied sometimes by a factor of 1.5. When an electrolyte was used which consisted of 10 pct water by volume in ethylene glycol with 4.0 g KNO per 1000 ml of solution, anodiza-tion at 5 ma per sq cm led to satisfying results. Short-time anodizations gave oxide layers of a higher apparent density than those experienced from thermally gown silicon oxides. THE functioning and the electrical characteristics of semiconductor devices are based upon the incorporation of "impurities" into a single-crystalline body of suitable material and on the concentration distribution (profile) of this impurity. The incorporation can be achieved by well-known processes as, for example, by diffusion, epitaxial growth, alloying, or ion implantation. Often the profile resulting from these processes is not known. A powerful tool to learn about a concentration distribution is given by the method of differential sheet conductance which employs successive four-probe measurements on a layer subjected to stepwise removal of thin sublayers. Differential sheet conductance vs position (or penetration depth) of a sublayer is plotted and a smooth curve is drawn through the data. From this curve the profile is then calculated. When the semiconductor material is silicon, the sublayers are removed suitably by anodic oxidation of the silicon and subsequent dissolving of the formed silicon oxide by an etch. The accuracy of the resulting profile is very strongly influenced by the uniformity of the sublayer thickness. Normally, it would be expected that, for a constant number of coulombs passed, the thickness would be constant from oxidation to oxidation. Investigations showed that for sublayers several hundred angstroms thick the reproducibility can be rather poor. Therefore, efforts were made to obtain a reliable technique for uniform removal. The present paper describes such a technique and certain phenomena which were encountered during the investigations. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The first report on the investigation of concentration distributions, where for differential sheet conductance measurements thin silicon sublayers were removed from a diffused layer by anodic oxidation, was given by Tannenbaum. The author reports the removal of sublayers which for the most part were 400 thick. More advanced device designs now require much narrower layers. When it was tried in these laboratories to determine profiles within such layers, difficulties were encountered with respect to sublayers which by necessity had to be thinner than the ones reported by Tannenbaum. The apparatus used for the investigations is sketched in Fig. 1. Two cylindrical containers connected by a wide tube are filled with an electrolyte. The left container receives the cathode whereas the right container is closed at the bottom end by a sample support consisting of a Teflon base and a copper pedestal. The silicon sample (1 by 1 cm) is mounted to the pedestal embedded flush in the Teflon base using silver paint (Degussa) for electrical contact. Pyseal is applied to the edges of the sample to protect the copper pedestal from the electrolyte. The base is mounted to the container using a water-tight silicon rubber gasket. Fig. 2 gives a view of the sample support. The copper pedestal is connected to the positive side of a power supply operating at a constant current output (Kepco Model ABC 425M). The electrolyte which has been reported by Duffek et al. consisted of either 2 or 10 pct water by volume in ethylene glycol and 4.0 g KNO3 in 1000-ml solution. The electrolyte is best prepared

When F. Heuslerl found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.% All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys4 the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intellgently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data. have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. Previous Work In the original work of F. THE pioneering work of Steinitz1 and Steinitz, Binder, and Moskowitz2 has shown conclusively the existence at high temperature of two additional phases in the molybdenum-boron system and thus brings to a total of six the number of structures appearing in this system. To the structures Mo2B, MOB, and Mo2B5 they have added MO3B2, a new -MOB form, and have shown that MOB,, which has the same range of composition as Mo2B5, is only a high temperature structure of the latter. This solid solution, interestingly enough, includes neither of the compositions corresponding to the stoichiomet-ric compounds, MOB, or Mo2B5, but rather at all temperatures has intermediate values of composition. These workers have also, in the course of their work, measured melting points, transition temperatures, eutectic and peritectic points in the system and have shown that Mo3B2, because of its dispro-portionation at low temperature to Mo2B and MOB, is stable only in a limited high temperature range. During the course of the present work on the vaporization properties of the molybdenum-boron compounds, a few transition temperatures were observed. When the report of the other workers appeared, it was decided to repeat, in part, their study of the system. As a result, considerable evidence has been obtained that substantiates the specific kinds of melting processes they report as well as the general features of their diagram. However, a marked difference was found between the temperatures they report and the ones observed in this study, with the latter being higher. The purposes of this paper are to present the evidence obtained in this laboratory that verifies their diagram of the system, to give some important temperatures in the system, to compare them with those previously published, and to seek an explanation of the difference. Samples The metal starting material was 400 mesh molybdenum powder with a purity stated by the manufacturer to be 99.9 pct. The initial treatment, designed to remove volatile contamination, consisted of heating in a vacuum for 10 min to a temperature of from 800" to 1000°C during which a loss of 0.3 to 0.4 pct occurred. An assay following this treatment showed it to be 99.4 pct pure, with the principal impurity probably being oxygen. The boron starting material was obtained from the Cooper Metallurgical Laboratories and the Fair-mount Chemical Co. as 325 mesh powder with manufacturers' analyses of 99 pct or better. Initial treatment consisted of heating in molybdenum in a vacuum at about 1700°C for 10 min. During this time a loss of 3.5 pct occurred. An assay following this treatment showed the different samples to have purities ranging from 95.5 to 99.0 pct with iron and carbon as the principal impurities. Following the initial treatment, the elements were combined to form stocks of Mo2B and MOB by heating pressed mixtures in a vacuum to 1100" to 1200°C to accomplish reaction and to 1500" to 1900°C for a few minutes to evaporate the more volatile impurities. Analysis of the two compounds for boron by a modification of the method of Blumenthal3 and for molybdenum by the lead-molybdate method indicated them to have purities greater than 99 pct. The individual samples to be studied had compositions in the Mo2B-MOB range and consisted of mixtures of the stock compounds. Procedure As is usually the case in high temperature work the selection of containers for the samples posed some problems. For vapor pressure studies tantalum crucibles, allowing little contact with the pressed samples, were used and some of the observations made during these experiments are pertinent to the study of the phase diagram. Most of the experiments, however, were performed in graphite containers, as were those of the previous authors. Two kinds of spectroscopic grade graphite crucibles were used. One was a % in. cylinder, 3/4 in. high, containing seven 3/16 in. holes drilled 1/2 in. deep into which were packed samples of the different mixtures weighing 250 to 500 milligrams. The other, consisting of separate crucibles, was prepared by drilling 3/16 in. holes, 1/2 in. deep into 1/4 in. graphite rods % in. long. The 7/8 in. cylinder was heated directly by induction while the small crucibles were packed in a tantalum heating element for induction heating. All heating was done in a high vacuum system in which the pressure was generally less than 1x10-5mm and never rose above 2x10-5mm when the samples were hot. The general pattern of the heating in graphite was to heat rapidly to a temperature somewhat below the desired one, then to raise the temperature slowly. The samples were held for 2 to 5 min at the maximum temperature, which in all cases was far higher than that needed to produce reaction. The short time was employed to reduce possible contamination by the crucible material and to reduce composition changes that would occur because of vaporization. After examination following the heating, the samples were reheated to a higher temperature. Temperatures were measured with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing filament optical pyrometer, certified by the National Bureau of Standards, by sighting through a window at the top of the vacuum

TIN is not yet classed as a rare metal, but it has taken a long stride in that direction in the last ten months. It is now in Group 1 of the War Production Board's critical list, along with such company as magnesium aluminum, and nickel. This is in sharp contrast with the position a year ago when the supply well exceeded demand, and tin was used when feasible in place of really scarce metals. The geographical sources of tin production in recent years are shown in Table 1. Preponderance of former production in southeastern Asia, particularly Malaya and the Netherlands Indies (but all now controlled by the Japanese). is entirely too marked to be funny. Of the 1940 known world production of 237,000 long tons nearly all was controlled by the United States, Great Britain, and their friends. Now their supply is from countries that produced only 28 per cent of that amount. This excludes China and Australia, which because of shipping difficulties and local consumption, cannot be expected to export much tin. In spite of some expected increase in production, therefore, the supply is, and will continue to stay for at least several years, way below that desired for even normal uses. downdraft traveling grate process to agglomerate pelletized iron ore concentrates has been successfully demonstrated in a pilot plant at Carrollville, Wis. Work there followed several years of development in the Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. laboratories, and the pilot plant phase was carried out in cooperation with Arthur G. McKee & Co., consultants and engineers to the iron and steel industry. End result of the process is conversion of iron ore concentrates into a form which can easily be transported and smelted in the blast furnace. Process Description The first of two process steps incorporates the art of balling and prepares the concentrates for burning. The second step consists of burning the green balls on the grate machine to the hardness required for shipping and handling purposes and for reduction in blast furnaces, see Fig. 1. Facilities are provided at the pilot plant to receive carload quantities of concentrate. The concentrates are loaded into a 50-ton bin direct from railroad cars. Because of the variable moisture content of the concentrates after shipment in an open railroad car it is necessary to repulp and refilter the concentrates to maintain a uniform and proper moisture content for the balling operation. Concentrates are conveyed to slurry tanks, and the slurry, at 50 to 60 pct solids, is pumped to a 4x4-ft drum filter. The filter provides feed of uniform moisture to the plant. Magnetite concentrates are normally filtered to produce a cake containing about 10 pct moisture, a necessary requirement for the following balling operation. The filtered concentrate is conveyed to a rotary bin table feeder which acts as a surge bin for the filter cake and delivers a steady flow of concentrates to the balling drum. It is often desirable to make additions to the concentrates as they are fed to the balling drum. These additives, such as bentonite, increase the strength of the finished green pellet and improve ballability of the concentrate. A vibrating feeder supplies additive to the feed belt, and the additive is mixed with the concentrate in the balling drum. The balling drum, shown in Fig. 3, is 8x3-ft diam. An oscillating cutting bar maintains the lining in the drum by trimming off the buildup of excess concentrate as it forms. The drum is operated in closed circuit with a lx4-ft rod-deck vibrating screen. Undersize pellets or seed pellets from the screen are returned to the balling drum until they grow to the desired size. Size of pellets is controlled by the opening in the screen deck. The formation of pellets in the balling drum is affected by many variables. Some of these are: the size distribution of the feed, the particle shape of the concentrate, the feed rate to the drum, the moisture in the concentrate, the speed of rotation of the drum, the slope of the drum, and the type of trimming obtained with the cutting bar. In this process, attempts are made to control the pellet size within the limits of % to 5/8 in. diam. The screened oversize pellets are conveyed under a coal feeder where sufficient powdered coal is added to the belt to produce desired results in the burning process. The top size of the coal successfully used has been 20 mesh, and anthracite was used in the test program. Fig. 4 illustrates the vibrating screen and the coal feeder. The pellets and free coal are conveyed together to the 5x3-ft diam- reroll drum that rolls the coal onto the surface of the pellets. This drum is also equipped with a cutting bar. The prepared pellets, containing bentonite, water, and surface coal, are elevated to the traveling grate, which consists of a continuous strand of 37 pallets. Each pallet, with a grate bar area 2 ft wide by 1 1/2 ft long, has 14-in. high side plates, Fig. 5. Feeding and distribution of the green balls to the grate is handled by a short conveyor which oscillates back and forth across the 2-ft width of the grate. An adjustable vertical plate located several inches in front of the head pulley of the oscillating conveyor controls the height of the bed and levels the moving bed of pellets. This method of feeding prevents segregation of various size pellets as well as fines and produces a uniform, permeable bed. The pallet train moves under the furnace and across four windboxes, located beneath the pallet frames, see Fig. 2. As the green pellets are deposited on the grate, partial drying of the pellets begins over a 2-ft long updraft windbox. The low temperature air reduces the moisture in the pellets in the lower level of the bed and this operation is essential to prevent sagging of the bed during later stages of the Process. The air used for this drying is recuperated from cooling the pellets on the grate, and supplemental heat, required for starting the Process, is obtained from an auxiliary burner. The pellets are then moved by the grate into the furnace and over an 8-ft windbox, designated as the downdraft waste windbox. Products of combustion are exhausted from this windbox to atmosphere. The furnace, shown in Fig. 6, is constructed with three chambers to provide downdraft drying, preheating, and ignition, respectively, to the pellet bed as it passes through. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of determining, in a systematic way, the effect of the rate of cooling of steels, heated to above the transformation range, on their various mechanical properties. This paper gives the results obtained in the investigation of the heat treatment of carbon steels carried out under the auspices of the Committee on The Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the Engineering Division, National Research Council. The objects of this committee, of which Dr. Henry M. Howe was chairman, were to increase knowledge of the influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of carbon steel. The mcthod pursued was to subject specimens of steel of the carbon contents most used for engineering work, 0.34 per cent., 0.52 per cent., and 0.75 per cent., to various heat treatments, and to test the mechanical properties thus induced. The steels were the same as were used by the committee on fatigue phenomena. This project was financed jointly by the U. S. Bureaus of Mines and Standards; industries and university laboratories have cooperated. A large part of the work was done at Doctor Howe's private laboratory. The committee consisted of F. B. Foley, H. AT. Boylston, H. C. Boynton, G. K. Burgess, H. J. French, J. H. Hall, Zay Jeffries, R. S. Johnston, F. C. Langenberg, H. F. Moore, E. H. Yeirce, H. S. Rawdon, W. E. Ruder and 11. J. Stagg. WHILE some of the mining companies have been pumping a small amount of water for some time, it is only in recent years that large quantities of water have been encountered in the Tonopah district. The water appears to be in different zones or belts so that the draining of one property does not necessarily affect the one adjoining. Consequently, each company has its own pumping plant and its own conditions. The companies panes handling the largest amount of water are the Tonopah Extension Mining Co., Halifax Tonopah Mining Co., West Tonopah Consolidated Mining Co., and Great Western Consolidated Mining Co. The Halifax shaft is on the eastern end of the district and the other three properties on the western. The ore-bearing formation occurs at greater depth on -the eastern and western ends, hence the water problem in these properties.

MONTANA Phosphate Produucts Co., a subsidiary of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., operates three properties near Garrison, Mont., known as the Anderson, Graveley, and Luke mines. All three are underground operations, mining the same narrow bed at points several miles apart. The Anderson, the oldest and largest of the three, has produced about 700,000 long tons since 1929. The Graveley has produced slightly over 100,000 long tons since 1940, and the Luke, acquired in 1943, is still in an early stage of development. The great bulk of the output has been shipped to the Trail, B. C., plant of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. for use in the manufacture of fertilizers. The phosphate seam is the basal member of the Permian Phosphoria formation. In all three mines it has a uniform thickness of 3 to 4 ft. of oulitic phosphate, with a few shaly partings. The overlying part of the formation comprises about 50 ft. of chert and the immediate footwall consists of a few feet of shale and sandstone. underlain by the Quadrant quartzite.

MUCH has been said and written of the "Big Inch," of the terrific obstacles encountered in its construction, of the colorful and tough men engaged in its building, but little has been publicized of the engineering and economic problems behind the scenes. Long before Pearl Harbor it was apparent to the petroleum industry that a critical oil shortage could be expected along the Atlantic seaboard, owing to delay in tanker deliveries as a result of convoy movements, and to allocation of vessels for foreign shipments. This area, with a normal consumption of approximately 1,800,000 barrels per day of oil and products, was almost entirely supplied by tanker. Pipe lines supplied an average of only 20,000 barrels per day in 1939, 40,300 barrels per day in 1940, and 55,000 barrels per day in 1941. A small amount of oil and products was also delivered via barge.

On the Manchuria. SOMEWHAT fatigued with excess of enjoyment and strenuous continuity of movement on the trip to and through California, the members and guests of the Institute party embarked Tuesday, Oct. 17, on the Pacific Mail S. A thermo-osmosis technique has been used to measure the heat of transport, Q* , of hydrogen and of deuterium dissolved in a iron and in nickel, and of hydrogen in Feo.6Nio.4 in the tempevature range 400° to 600°C. For all these systems, Q* is negative and has a large temperature coefficient; an isotope effect can be established for the solutes only in nickel. The magnitude of Q* is considerably larger than the activation energy, E , for migration in the case of these isotopes in a iron, so that all variants of the Wirtz model must be rejected. The phenomenological definition of Q* is developed to show that Q* is related to the mechanisms by which the activation energy is dissipated back into the lattice, and that Q*/E is a function of the ratios of the mean free paths of electrons and of phonons to the distance of jump of the diffusing atom. A correlation is shown to exist between the sign of Q* in thermal diffusion and that of the effective charge in electro migration, and may be understood as due to the large ratio of the mean free path of electrons to that of phonons. THE study of nonisothermal diffusion in the solid state is of interest because certain aspects of the mechanism of diffusion are made manifest which remain concealed though still present in the isothermal case. The thermodynamics of irreversible processes characterizes nonisothermal diffusion, known as thermal diffusion or as the Ludwig-Soret effect, by a quantity, Q*, called the heat of transport, which essentially measures the sign and the magnitude of the steady-state concentration gradient produced by the imposed temperature gradient. The problem then is to understand the quantity Q* at the atomistic level. There does not exist a theory for the atomistic interpretation of the heat of transport. There are, however, two classes of simple models which seem to afford some physical insight into Q*. Wirtz's model1, z and its subsequent generalizations partition the activation energy, E, for the migration of the atom spatially about the region of the migrating atom, so that Q* is the difference between the portion of the activation energy centered about the original site of the jumping atom and that portion about the arrival site. Clearly, the magnitude of Q* cannot on this model be larger than the activation energy for migration. The model of Oriani3 also considers the spatial distribution of E not only before but also after the atomic jump, and Q* is related to the variation of the spatial distribution of E that is produced by the jump. The simplest kind of system with which to compare the consequences of these ideas is the interstitial solid solution, since one may easily choose a temperature at which only the interstitial component moves, the solvent lattice serving as a completely satisfactory frame of reference. Thus, one avoids complications arising when both species in a binary system move. In addition, one avoids the necessity of knowing the energy for the formation of a vacancy, something which is needed for the analysis of thermal-diffusion data on metals which diffuse by the vacancy-exchange mechanism. However, the number of well-measured interstitial systems is extremely small, and, in particular, there are almost no data in the published literature for the temperature dependence of the heat of transport. If one works with solutes which are gases in the pure state at ordinary temperatures, one may use the technique of thermo-osmosis4 which permits thermal diffusion to be measured over a small temperature difference so that the temperature dependence of Q* can be more easily determined. A new method for obtaining equilibrium vaporization ratios (K-values) for reservoir fluids has been developed and tested. By application of the method, complex experimental measurements of liquid and vapor phase compositions are eliminated. This simplified technique reduces the cost of experimental equilibrium-ratio data for reservoir studies of condensates and volatile crude-oil systems. The method is designed for systems of constant composition and, therefore, is best suited for depletion studies where compositional changes at high pressures are minor. The basic data required, in addition to the composition of the initial reservoir fluid, are the relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities at reservoir temperature and variom reservoir pressures. Tests demonstrated that the method predicts equilibrium ratios accurately for condensates. A single test on a crude oil was not conclusive; further testing will be necessary before the accuracy of the method can be determined for crude-oil systems. In addition to determining equilibrium ratios, the calculation method provides information on the physical properties of the "plus" component in the vapor and liquid phases. The "plus" component is that mixture of components heavier than the least volatile fraction analyzed. This information is useful in studies of both natural depletion and cycling operations for condensate reservoirs where the heptanes-plus component in the gas phase is produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION As more volatile oil and condensate reservoirs are found, the use of phase behavior techniques to predict their performance is increasing in importance. These techniques have long been used for condensate fields and have more recently been applied to crude-oil fields containing oils of medium-to-high volatility. In these phase behavior methods, equilibrium ratios (K-values) are used to predict compositional changes in the reservoir fluids—thereby accounting for the recoverable oil that exists in the gas phase. The reliability of the predictions depends to a large extent on the equilibrium ratios used. These values must be obtained for each component for the entire pressure range being investigated. Unfortunately, because of the complex nature of hydrocarbon mixtures, accurate K-values are hard to obtain. The equilibrium ratios for a particular component will vary not only with the temperature and pressure, but also with over-all composition of the system. The importance of composition is quite critical at elevated pressures, but becomes negligible at pressures below about 300 psia. Therefore, because most phase behavior problems involve the high-pressure region, each fluid system becomes a special case. Experimental programs to determine characteristic K-values are quite difficult and time-consuming. Thus, it is often necessary to resort to approximations of the K-value data. Charts giving K-values for various mixtures and classes of mixtures are available in the literature. However, there are two major difficulties in using them: (1) the K-values of the "plus" component (that mixture of components heavier than the last one analyzed) must be obtained by extrapolation from the K-values of the other components; and (2) the K-values obtained must finally be adjusted by trial and error to agree with observed volumetric data. To eliminate these difficulties, a new method of determining equilibrium ratios was developed. Briefly, after the composition of the system as a whole has been analyzed, the method uses empirical correlations and the gross fluid properties of the system (relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities) to calculate K-values. Because the calculative procedure is long, it is best solved on a digital computer. About one hour of machine time on an IBM 650 computer is required to develop a K-chart for the fluid being examined. DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD OF OBTAINING K-VALUES Equilibrium ratios are defined as the ratio of the mole fraction of a component in the vapor phase to its mole fraction in the liquid phase. This statement is expressed in Eq. 1. A typical plot of equilibrium ratios for a particular system is shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that, at pressures near the saturation pressure, the K-values appear to converge to a common point. The installation in 1948 of a Humphrey spiral concentrator section at the Hill-Trumbull plant of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. is the latest commercial method on the Mesabi Range being used for the recovery of fine iron ore. In two stages of concentration 84 spirals treat approximately 120 long tons per hour of minus 1/8 in. ore. These spirals augment the production of the heavy-density plant which recovers the plus 44 in. iron from the plant crude ore. Structure of the ore is such that, when crushed, about 50 pct of the plant crude is minus 1/8 in. size. After desliming in a 66 in. Akins classifier, grinding the classifier product in a ball mill and again desliming in a 78 in. Akins classifier about 15 pct of the crude ore remains to be treated in the spiral plant.

The ideal pressure-tube is obviously the one which combines the greatest strength with the least weight of material consistent with the uses for which it is designed or employed. The inside of the pipe is the first concern of the engineer. It should be cylindrical, smooth, and of the requisite capacity for the purpose in view. It should be in lengths as great as can be oonveniently handled, so that the couplings may be as few as possible. With the walls of the tube the engineer has no further occasion to concern himself than to make sure they are adequate to carry the internal and external pressures to which they will be subjected. It is as true of a pipe as of a truss, that when it is strong enough to give the requisite factor of safety, nothing is gained by having it stronger. Anything more than this means dead weight, which has to be paid for many times, first as material, and again and again in the costs of transportation and handling, until it reaches its place in the trench or on supports. In use it must be and remain tight against all leakage, and must sustain whatever is placed over or upon it, or suspended from it, without deformation or injury. Finally, in addition to meeting all the immediate requirements of service, it must possess qualities of durability which warrant a reasonable expectation of a long life of usefulness. The wise engineer no longer regards it as reasonable to depend upon mere bulk of its own material for the protection of a metal as readily impaired or destroyed by oxidation as iron or steel. The metal must have a coating which will be and remain impervious and indestructible. When all these conditions are met, we have as near an approach to the ideal tube as can be attained with the materials now available for their manufacture. Steel wed constructively, to the best advantage, meets these requirements most perfectly. Gold alone would do it better. If we search through the whole list of metals and alloys we find nothing available which so perfectly meets the requirements as a pipe material as steel. The original basis for the search for oil in Great Britain was described last year.t During 1937 the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Company, Ltd. has been continued. Three wells have been completed in the south of England and a fourth is nearing completion. In addition, test wells are now being drilled in Scotland and East Yorkshire. Southern England The test well on the Portsdown structure, which at the end of 1936 was drilling in the Lower Lias at 5792 ft., entered the Triassic at 6540 ft. and was completed in that formation at a depth of 6556 ft., without encountering further indications of petroleum. The Henfield well encountered the Lias at a depth of approximately 4090 ft., and after drilling 800 ft. of an argillaceous development of that formation entered a series of marls, breccias and conglomeratic limestones of the Carboniferous. Drilling was suspended at a depth of 5105 ft., in the latter formation. The consistently impermeable nature of the strata encountered in the Portsdown and Henfield test wells focused attention on the desirability of obtaining shore-line conditions of the Jurassic. With this end in view the Kingsclere anticline, a few miles south of Newbury in Berkshire, was selected for a next test. The Kingsclere well has now reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias and has encountered a full development of the Jurassic. With the exception of the Portland sand, which has a slightly greater porosity, and the Corallian, in which relatively great thicknesses of impervious limestone were met, conditions of sedimentation have been found to be comparable with those of the earlier wells. Small traces of petroleum have been found in cuttings and cores, but formation tests carried out at frequent intervals have yielded no flow of oil. In order to test the Corallian, from which series an outcropping oil sand had been found, a test well was drilled in a near-by anticline at Poxwell in Dorset.
