The microseismic method of detecting instability in underground mines was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the early 1940's. ,3 The method relies on the fact that as rock is stressed, strain energy is stored in the rock. Accompanying the buildup of strain energy are small-scale displacement adjustments that release small amounts of seismic and acoustic energy. These small-scale disturbances, which can be detected with the aid of special geophysical equipment, are called micro-seisims or self-gene rated rock noises. It was further determined that as failure of rock is approached, the rate at which rock noises are generated increases. Thus, by monitoring a rock structure at intervals and plotting rock noise rates vs. time, a semi quantitative estimate of the behavior and stability of the structure can be made. Since sufficient use of the microseismic method is still being made by various mining and construction companies, USBM undertook a comprehensive review of the method and a study of the fundamental properties of rock noises. As all prior work on rock noises has been done with resonant-type geophones, which prevented any analysis of their vibration records, it was necessary to develop the instrumentation and field techniques in order that their properties could be investigated, such as their frequency spectrum and absorption characteristics, and to determine if both P and S-waves are generated by a rock noise. The aim of this program is the design of microseismic instrumentation which can be better utilized as an engineering tool than the presently available microseismic equipment. This new design, based on the basic properties of rock noises, should allow better utilization of these phenomena in the study and location of zones of incipient instability in both underground and open-pit mines. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE To study the waveform of rock noises, it was necessary to develop a microseismic system with a broad bandwidth. To achieve high sensitivity and broad frequency response, commercial ceramic accelerometers were used. The present broad-band microseismic system consists of accelerometers as geophones, low-noise preamplifiers, high-gain amplifiers, and an FM magnetic tape recorder. This seven-channel system has a flat frequency response from 20 to 10,000 Hz, a noise level of less than 2.0 kv, and a dynamic range (including manual set attenuation) of greater than 100 db; it can detect signals with acceleration levels as low as 2 ug. The entire system is solid state and hence battery operated and portable (Fig. 1) Analysis procedures consist of playing back the 30-in-per-sec (ips) magnetic tape recordings at 1 7/8 ips to expand the time scale of a recorded rock noise event and then recording this on a high-speed direct-writing oscillograph. The oscilIographic records are then digitized and run through Fourier integral analysis computer programs to determine the frequency spectrum of a rock noise event. The oscillographic records are also examined visually to determine if both P and S-waves can be recognized in a rock noise waveform. Broad-band microseismic recordings have been made at field sites in a wide variety of rock types and in both underground and open-pit mines. Sites include the Kimbley Pit, Ruth, Nev.; the Galena Mine, Wallace, Idaho; the Colony Development Mine. Grand Valley, Colo.; the Cliff Shaft Mine, Ishpeming, Mich; and the White Pine Mine, White Pine, Mich. DATA AND DISCUSSION Analyses of the recorded data have shown that rock noise frequencies are very broad. Fig. 2 and 3 show typical rock noise events and their frequency spectrums. In addition, it is evident from these figures that the wave form of a rock noise is very complex. The wide frequency variation, 50 to 7500 Hz, is due to many variables; the effect of travel distance is the only one examined in this study. The higher frequency components of the wave are rapidly absorbed with distance or increasing travel time. Fig. 4 shows the change in waveform resulting from an additional travel distance of 195 ft. From these data, it is apparent that a resonant-type microseismic geophone cannot respond to all frequencies generated by a rock noise, and in spite of the fact that the tuned geophone is more sensitive at resonance, a geophone with less sensitivity but broader band width is much more effective in detecting rock noises. In addition, a study of broad-band microseismic records shows that both P and S-wave arrivals are easily detected, as shown in Fig. 5. The survey, based upon a completely precoded mail questionnaire, aimed at three major objectives: (1) to determine the general impact of World War II upon the profession in the period 1939 through 1946; (2) to obtain re- R liable data from which valid findings could be derived to predict how active the profession would be after 1946; and (3) to determine if the war's upheaval had changed materially the pattern of professional activities, education, background, and earnings from those which existed prior to 1939. At first blush one is tempted to say that iron-mines are like any other mines, and that principles governing miniug-property in general will apply to them. But there are certain considerations which seem to repay reflection. Gold and copper are more or less independent of transportation. The proof of this is that those metals are profitably mined and shipped from the remotest corners of the earth. Their value is determined by the cost of production on the ground. This is quite true of gold, not quite so true of copper, not at all true of iron. If New York were a. fishing-village and Chicago a swamp, Calumet & Hecla might still be a bonanza. The main element of its value is the 60 lb. of fine copper per ton which it produced for years. But the Mesabi Range is absolutely dependent upon the industrial activity in the United States. Iron-manu-facture in Europe would give it no value whatever. If Chicago and New York had a population of Peruvians or Hindus, the Hull-Rust mine would be as worthless a bit of landscape as any tundra in Alaska. I have discussed these facts more or less casually and dimly in my book on the cost of mining and in my report to the Tax Commissioners of Michigan.1 I shall try here to bring them out in more detail. I have already referred to some differences in the problem of mining as between the more precious metals, e.g., gold, and the less precious and more abundant minerals, like iron and coal; but it is interesting to note that the literature of the eco-

THE joint meetings of the Mining Geology Committee and the Society of Economic Geologists proved to be deservedly popular, and the interesting papers drew an attendance which strained the capacity of one of the large meeting rooms.. As might be expected these days when even the Supreme Court can't keep away from the subject of gold, the discussions opened on Thursday morning with several papers devoted to questions of structural and mineralogical relationships of the deposits of this metal. The presentation of Ira B. Joralemon's paper, "Veins and Faults in the Bralorne Mine," by Reno Sales, elicited considerable discussion on the relation of mariposite to gold, and the situation of the gold deposits with respect -to the Coast Range batholith. H. V. Warren stated that lie had observed mariposite always to be associated with gold in this region, but that gold was not always associated with mariposite. He pointed out that there is a series of veins on the west side of the batholith with a different mineralogy that, because of their richness but small size could quite easily make good, small mines. John A. Dresser concurred in this, and said lie thought this region was one of great promise for the mining geologist. He also reported having found mariposite associated with gold values below commercial limits, in the Appalachian regions.

MOST of the iron ore smelted in Alabama blast furnaces is mined within Alabama, although deposits in the neighboring States of Georgia and Tennessee may be drawn upon when occasion requires. Of the four commercial kinds of iron ore, the anhydrous ferric oxide, hematite (Fe2O3) ; the hydrous ferric oxide, mostly the type commonly known as limonite (2 Fe2O33H2O) ; the carbonate, siderite (FeCO3) ; and the magnetic oxide, magnetite (Fe:3O4) ; the first two are found in abundance in Alabama, the third in less than commercial quantities, and the fourth only rarely. Both the hematite and the hydroxide are found in somewhat different forms according to their geologic environment. The Red Mountain hematite, of Silurian age, that crops out in well¬defined beds for 1.50 miles northeast-southwest and 40 miles northwest-southeast is the predominant source of ore. Only a small part of this area carries ore of commercial value; Birmingham and Gadsden are now the only centers of production. The ore is of sedimentary origin, probably altered from vast deposits of greensand mixed with calcareous, fossiliferous. marine debris. Other types of hematite not vet mined commercially are in metamorphosed rocks-red ore in slates in Columbiana Mountain and specular hematite (gray ore) in quartzite in the Talladega Hills.

Recent evidence has indicated that the films forming at crude oil-water interfaces are the result of naturally occurring su,rface-active components in the crude oil rather than oxidation products resulting from exposure of the oil to air. Since the presence of such films may strongly affect the displacement of oil from porous media, a knowledge of their composition and formatiorz is of fundamental importance. In this study, without the assumption of a specific mechanism, film formation is considered to involve the transfer of a weakly surface-active species in solution in the oil to the oil-water interface. The film gas law and the Gibbs adsorption equation may thus he applied to the system. The rigid films which form upon decrease of the oil-water interfacial area are considered a result of the very slow rate of re-solution of the film material into the oil. When the shrinkage of the interface is very rapid, the amount of film material leaving the interface is negligible, and the system may then be treated in the same manner as an insoluble film. The combination of these treatments leads to a new concept of the film factor in which it may he quantitatively related to the concentration of film-forming material at the interface. Suitable experiments can then yield the following information. 1. Original concentration of surface-active species in the oil. 2. The change of concentration with time. 3. Concentration of surface active species at the interface. 4. The change of this concentration with time. 5. Interfacial tension of the system at any time and its variation with time. 6. Equilibriunz concentrations for a given set of conditions. 7. Concentration requirements for solid film formation. 8. Molecular diameter of the adrorbed species. These calculations may be made solely from data taken from measurements on the original oil. While using the pendant drop method of interfacial tension measurement of crude oil-water systems, Bartell and Niederhauser' remarked on the thin, transparent, pliable, solid films or membranes which were often formed at the interface between crude oil and water. As a result of their observations of these films, Bar-tell and Niederhauser concluded: 1. The films are formed by material from the oil adsorbed at the interface rather than by a reaction at the interface. 2. The adsorption of the film-forming material is a rather slow process. 3. There are good indications that the process is reversible; i.e., the film constituents may re-dissolve into the oil. 4. The film will spontaneously spread over any new surface formed. 5. The process of adsorption at the interface is accompanied by a decrease in the interfacial tension of the system. Although they had proved that film formation was not due to a reaction at the interface, Bartell and Niederhauser were unable to demonstrate conclusively whether these film-forming constituents were present in the original reservoir oil or whether they were formed as oxidation products after exposure of the oil to air. Recent evidence seems to point to their presence in the original oil. Although the true nature of the film-forming constituents is still uncertain, these conditions would be fulfilled by the assumption of the presence of a slightly soluble surface-active component in the original oil. This component would migrate to a freshly formed interface because it would thereby lower the free energy of the system. The component at the surface constitutes an expanded monolayer which would become compressed, upon retraction of drop, due to the slow rate of re-solution of the film components into the bulk of the oil. It is possible, by involved extraction processes, to separate or at least concentrate this film-forming fraction. However, using the assumptions made above, the technique of monolayer film study may be applied to reveal much of the nature of the adsorbing material without resorting to an actual separation of the film-forming constituents.

IT IS well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated : A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of price, has no exact meaning; and in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and. that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage. will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization.

The literature dealing with the physical constants of nickel is so fragmentary and unrelated that a synopsis presents unusual difficulties. It is only within the last few years that investigators have understood the importance of placing on record not only the determinations they have made but also the composition, physical treatment, and past history of the material investigated. For this reason much of the earlier literature is valueless. Determinations have been made of the same physical constants on samples differing widely in origin, composition, and treatment, and the results differ widely among themselves. In the first place nickel is almost as flexible a term as steel. Its physical properties are widely influenced by its composition and treatment. It absorbs large quantities of gases and is exceedingly difficult to prepare in a state of chemical purity comparable to gold, silver, or copper. It is vitally affected by thermal and mechanical treatment. Hence in the following pages the recorded literature, where quoted, must be accepted with a certain reserve and used, as far as possible, as a check on later observations, in which these important factors are noted. In every case where new determinations are given, an attempt has been made to record all available information concerning the composition and treatment of the material used so that the data may serve as stepping-stones toward a wider knowledge of the properties of the metal. As this synopsis is an attempt by men of metallurgical training to do what should long before have been done by physicists, it is to be expected that certain errors may have crept in. (communication to the Secretary*) : It may not be amiss to point out that the top-pressure in iron blast-furnaces is largely affected by variations in the temperature of the gas. I find in my note-books, cases in which the pressure was from 9.25 to 9.5 in. of water when the material in the furnace was low (after dinner-hour), which fell to from 8 to 8.5 in., when the furnace was again full, and the gas consequently cooled. The chief cause for this effect is, that, at the higher temperature, there is a decrease in the weight of the gas in the descending-leg of the siphon formed by the down-comer and the chimneys. It does not seem probable that there is any direct relation between top-pressure and quantity of flue-dirt. Top-pressure, at any given moment, measures the " head " necessary to discharge the gas then passing, against the resistances of pipes, valves, etc., in the gas-conduits between the top of the furnace and the mouths of the chimneys, and can be increased at will by closing, more or less, the valves, or dampers, at the stoves and the boilers. The question of relation between top-pressure and flue-dirt can be settled very easily by direct experiment, working alternately with gas-valves open, and partly closed, and noting the top-pressures and the respective quantities of fluedirt collected. The quantities of fine ore blown away, as shown by Mr. Grammer's tables, are astonishing to one who has had no actual experience with Mesabi ore and hard driving. Flue-dirt, in the sense in which he uses the term, was unknown at anthracite furnaces so long as the working was normal; when it did occur, it was always an incident of scaffolding and bad work, and was no doubt caused by an increase in the velocity

Distinct areas of mineralized and non-mineralized brecciated rock are found in the Ontario Unit of the United Park City Mines. These breccias contain an appreciable fraction of the present ore reserves and probably will become even more important as deeper levels are developed. Three ages of breccia have been recognized in the Ontario Mine to date: ( 1) Pre-mineral breccia that may or may not be mineralized, (2) early post-mineral breccia with mineralized fragments, and ( 3) late post-mineral breccia that is younger than and cuts through ( 1) and (2) above. These age ,relations are known from detailed underground mapping. Locally, both pre-mineral and post-mineral breccias have sufficient lead-zinc-silver content, either as matrix or fragmental material, to constitute ore. Ore-grade breccias occur throughout a vertical range of over 1000 feet and are found in both the Humbug and Deseret formations from above the Ontario 1300 level to below the Ontario 2200 level. The mineralized breccias, which are difficult to distinguish on mine maps, are not well delineated by underground workings, and their horizontal outline and vertical extent are not known beyond the immediate mining areas. The greatest amount of truly mineralized breccia is exposed on the 2200 level.

The Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. Production oF Two Concentrates The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead con- centrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 1941, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾-in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. 18 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. A scavenger concentrate is removed from the sixth, seventh, and eighth cells, and returned to the third cell. Consump-

I have lately had occasion to conduct a campaign at the works of the Empire City Company, in Railroad District, Elko County, Nevada, which, if not highly satisfactory, was at least very interesting in a technical point of view, and which I therefore think worthy of communication to the Institute. The lead ores in this district occur in lenticular masses along and near the contact of crystalline limestone with a dioritic porphyry, and consist of argentiferous carbonate of lead and galena, the latter occurring in solid blocks, or in ribbons running through the limestone. Associated with these are silicate, carbonate, and suboxide of copper, and brown and calc-spar. Adding to this, that the proportion of galena in the ore is small, and that no iron pyrites exists in the district, it is at once evident that the ore-mixture is difficult to treat. For a successful reduction by smelting, it would be necessary to introduce into the charge: 1. The proper quantities of sillphur-bearing ingredients, to effect a complete separation of copper and lead; and, 2. Sufficient silica and iron oxide, to form with the lime and magnesia of the ore, a slag of the required fluidity. The first condition could be fulfilled only very imperfectly, there being no iron pyrites in Railroad, nor in the surrounding districts. The nearest occurrence is in Battle Mountain, whence a supply could not be procured in time. The second condition, i. e., the addition of iron ore and quartz, was easily complied with, there being an abundance of these materials in the vicinity. The furnace of the Empire City Company, is a small shaftfurnace, with an area of hearth of six square feet, and is supplied with blast by a NO. 4 Root blower. In spite of this small size the furnace smelted during this campaign, which lasted 31 days, an average of 28 tons of ore, and 13 tons of fluxes, together 41 tons of charge, per twenty-four hours. The following tables give the complete data in regard to the smelting process, and the results obtained:

LEAD mining has been carried on in several localities of the Province of Ontario in a desultory fashion for the past 60 years, but up to 1916 the results have not been of much commercial importance. The most ambitious attempt was made by an English company which built a lead smelter at Kingston, Ont., in, 1880 to treat the- concentrates from the . Frontenac mines. After 2 years' operation, the -mines and smelter were abandoned. Up to the present there has not been a sufficient tonnage of concentrates to support an efficient blast-furnace plant and as most of the small properties could not stand the heavy freight and duty charges into the United States, development work has not been carried on in a, systematic manner. As a result the industry has languished. At, Galetta, in southeastern Ontario, considerable prospecting and development work has been carried on in the last few years and very promising deposits of galena have been found in the Chats Island group by the James Robertson Co., Ltd., of Montreal. The chief deposit is that of the Galetta or Kingdon lead mine, located on Chats Island in. the Ottawa River about 5 miles east of the town of Arnprior. The rocks' in the vicinity of -the mines consist of an interbedded series of crystalline limestone and biotite gneisses of pre-Cambrian age. This part of the Ottawa River' basin has been severely faulted and the overlying Paleozoic limestones may be seen in normal fault contact with the pre-Cambrian. The vein filling is of a very well-marked fault fissure type and although the amount of displacement is not determined at this point, similar faults to the east show a displacement of from 1,500 to 1,800 ft. which would indicate mineralized fault fissures of considerable depth. The ore occurs in a highly crystalline calcite with some barite and fluorite, and the galena occurs more or less richly disseminated in clusters and crystal aggregates. In some cases these masses weigh several hundred pounds. Small amounts of sphalerite are occasionally encountered.

Long freezing range casting alloys are particularly susceptible to a type of porosity which is observed to form in layers parallel to the supposed position of the isotherms in the solidifying casting. Under favorable conditions (which appear to be typified by low-temperature gradients in the casting giving rise to a wide and more or less uniform pasty zone, and which arise from several factors, particularly: a) wide freezing range alloy, b) high thermal conductivity of metal, c) low thermal conductivity of mold, and d) high mold temperature3) layer porosity has been observed in many different casting alloys: copper,' aluminum, magnesium,' steels, and high-temperature alloys.3 Baker4,5 and later cibula6 argue that layer porosity occurs because of thermal contraction, in a manner analogous to hot tearing. In outline, the theory consists of the establishment of a coherent dendrite network by the impinging of dendrite tips. Subsequent shrinkage imposes tensile stresses on the network which tears perpendicularly to the stress, i.e., parallel to the isotherms. If these tears are not filled by the inflow of residual liquid then layers of porosity result. Baker7 attempted to test whether the porosity was the result of thermal contraction by casting test pieces in a mold designed to accentuate hot tearing. However, no significant increase in porosity was observed. This negative result of Baker's critical experiment appears to be substantiated by numerous observations, particularly the experiments by Lagowski and Meier8 on Mg-Zn alloys covering the range of zinc contents up to 30 pct Zn. These clearly reveal that the maxima for the incidence of hot tearing and layer porosity are well-separated, occurring at 1 and 6 pct Zn, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal contraction maximum occurred at 1 pct Zn, indicating that hot tearing is associated with contraction in the solid state, and not with porosity. These observations are further substantiated by the elementary consideration that the thermal contraction of the casting is likely to produce (if anything, since the temperature difference across casting of high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum and copper, is likely to be negligible) a compressive stress on the

THE stabilization of a gravel road with soil is a method of treatment developed in recent years by the United States Bureau of Public Roads for the purpose of binding the constituents together better, and maintain-ing a more durable surface. The process consists in adding to the gravel or crushed stone and sand, a soil mortar, so-called, of fine sand, silt and clay, mixed in the proper proportions. The coarse gravel and sand supply structural strength and hardness; the fine sand adds embedment support to the coarse sand; the silt acts as a filler to prevent the granular particles from rocking; while the clay serves not only as a binder but also provides pores minute enough to cause connecting moisture films which are supposed to have high cohesive properties1. It will be recognized that the clay is an important ingredient both when wet and dry, and should not show excessive expansion when wet, nor correspondingly high shrinkage in drying, as otherwise there is danger of unseating the nonplastic particles. Such a stabilized road, although an improvement on one with a floating surface, will in course of time be subject to wear, and become dusty when the clay dries out and breaks up. It has been found that if some salts are added to the road mixture they tend to maintain the soil moisture and prevent dustiness of the road or raveling of the road surface. In addition to this, it is claimed that these dissolved salts cause a thinning of the moisture films on the particles, thus permitting greater compaction of the road mixture, and thereby increasing its density. This fact can be proved by noting the increased compaction which a road mixture shows when certain salts are added to the soil water. Since certain chemical substances such as sodium chloride are electro-lytes, the question arises whether they cannot have some effect on. the qualities of the clay in the soil mortar, and perhaps improve them. In view of the fact that certain salts seem to exert a favorable effect on the road mixture it is desirable that they be held in the road soil as long a time as possible.

THE Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization, is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated. A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. PRODUCTION OF TWO CONCENTRATES The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 194I, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. [ ] A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾ -in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. I8 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. This paper is coodensed from several reports by members of the staff of the Minerals Testing Laboratory of the Tennessee Valley Authority, on a series of experimental tests in the beneficiation of barite of the Valley area. These experiments were conducted upon a large number of samples taken from several mines in three different districts. The area contains numerous producing deposits, nearly all of which are hampered by the high iron and silica content of the ores. Because of the small difference in specific gravity between the iron oxide and the barite, a gravity separation is generally poor. The removal of the iron thus offers a special problem. Some of the operators have turned to magnetic separation to meet the shipping requirements for less than one per cent iron. The present experiments were conducted to determine the application of decrepitation or flotation in simplifying the concentration of the barite by removing the iron oxide and silica in one operation. Practically all the barite marketed in the area has been as "off-color" crude. The bleaching studies were made to determine the bleach-ability of the ores to alleviate this inferior grading, placing them on the market as bleached barite. Geology Barite has been produced at many places in the Tennessee Valley area, and prospects and minor deposits are known at many other places, but practically all the production of barite in the Valley has been from the Sweetwater district of East Tennessee. Other leading areas of former production are the Tazewell-Russell counties areas of southwest Virginia, the Del Rio-Stackhouse district of East Tennessee and western North Carolina, and the Fall Branch district of upper East Tennessee. The areas described in this paper are those from which samples used in the concentration tests were obtained.

For many years the occurrence of gold in the Coeur d'A1ène region had been rumored among the pioneers of the Northwest. It is stated that as early as 1853 gold was discovered in this district by Donelson, of the Stevens expedition, but the hostility of the Indians prevented prospecting. In 1858, when Lieutenant John Mullan surveyed the military road across the Bitter hot mountains, the members of his expedition, most of whom had mined in California, noticed sundry outcrops of good-looking quartz, and some of them actually found gold, as is recorded in a letter that Mullan wrote, from Washington, in 1884. The first successful prospector in the Coeur d' Alène was Tom Irwin, who worked a quartz vein on the Mullan road in the spring of 1879. Two years later he met A. J. Prichard, who was engaged in the lumber business; he told him what he thought of the chances of placer mining in the upper reaches of the Coeur d7AlBne river. This was in 1881. Prichard became keenly interested, and himself found gold on several creeks, one of which is now known by his name, at a place close to the site of the town of Murray.* In 1883 Prichard located a number of claims, and shortly afterward he wrote a letter to the members of a Liberal League to which he belonged, inviting them to "secure the lion's share" of the mineral wealth he had uncovered. His letters caused a stampede from Montana and Colorado, and from South Dakota also, to the Coeur d'Alène gold belt in the summer of 1883.
