Crystals with an (001) [loo] initial orientation of an iron-base alloy containing 3 pct Si were cold rolled with and without the use of constraints. A major difference in the rolling and annealing textures was observed between crystals rolled with and without constraints. These data show that the contribution of constraints at grain boundaries in a poly crystalline sheet should be considered in applying textural data on single crystals to grains in an aggregate. SILICON-iron alloys with a cube texture have been recently developed and their magnetic characteristics reported.1-4 Of interest in the development of this texture were the textural changes of single crystals accompanying rolling and annealing and the influence of constraints at grain boundaries in an aggregate on the behavior of individual grains. The present study was primarily concerned with the effect of constraints during rolling on the textures of 3 pct Si-Fe crystals initially (001)[100]. Barrett and Levenson5 were among the first to observe an influence of constraints at grain boundaries on the textural changes of individual grains during deformation. They tested Taylor's6 theory of plastic deformation of face-centered-cubic metals in which deformation textures were predicted. About one-third of the grains in poly crystalline aluminum did not rotate as predicted. Grains of the same initial orientation were observed to rotate in different directions under the influence of applied stress and anisotropic flow of neighboring grains. Recently, the various inhomogeneities of flow of crystals in an aggregate have been studied7'8 and reviewed.9-11 Barrett and Levenson" rolled (001) [loo] iron single crystals inserted in close-fitting holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate rolling of grains in an aggregate. Deformation bands were formed after a 90 pct reduction in thickness, and the cold-rolling texture contained two components described by rotating the (001)[100] about 35 deg in both directions around the normal of the rolling plane. No annealing textures were reported. Chen and Maddin13 rolled molybdenum single crystals initially (001) [loo]. The crystals were mounted between two hardened silicon-iron plates and 96 pct reduced in thickness by rolling at a low rate of reduction, about 0.0001 in. per pass. The deformation texture had the mean orientation of (001) [loo], and the azimuthal spread included orientations described by rotating (001) [loo] about 35 deg in both directions about the pole of the rolling plane. The presence of deformation bands were not reported by Chen and Maddin or detected in subsequent work of Ujiiye and Maddin.14 The ideal orientation of the annealing texture was (001) [loo]. Recently, Walter and Hibbard 15 reported on the textures of 3 pct Si-Fe alloy crystals initially near (001) [loo]. Each crystal was in an aggregate cut from a columnar ingot. After 66 pct reduction by rolling, the texture consisted of two symmetrical components which had the orientations described by rotating (001) [loo] about 30 deg in both directions about the pole of the rolling plane. Annealing texture was near (001) [loo]. In the above work, the textures of body-centered-cubic crystals were studied after rolling under the influence of constraints. The deformation textures varied from (001) [loo] to near the (001) [110] type and appeared sensitive to the manner in which the crystals were rolled. No textural data were available on the effect of rolling (001) [loo] crystals with and without constraints. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the influence of constraints during rolling on the textures of 3 pct Si-Fe crystals initially (001) [loo]. Rolling and annealing textures were studied for a) crystals rolled with no constraints at different rates of reduction, and b) crystals rolled with constraints imposed by neighboring grains and by plates between which a crystal was "sandwiched". PROCEDURES AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Data are presented on four crystals which are representative of several crystals studied. The orientation of each crystal prior to rolling was (001) [loo] as determined by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method," i.e., each crystal had an (001) within 3 deg of the rolling plane and [100] within 3 deg of the rolling direction. These crystals were obtained from two iron-base alloys containing 3 pct Si by weight which were prepared by vacuum melting electrolytic iron and a commercial grade of silicon. WheN attempting to lift mill pulp containing a considerable percentage of wolframite, in an ordinary bucket elevator, difficulty was encountered from the tendency of the tungsten minerals to settle, on account of their high specific gravity. Lifts not exceeding 20 ft. (6 m.) could be accomplished without particular difficulty, because there was insufficient time for consolidation of the heavy minerals in the bottom of the bucket; but with higher lifts, the heavy tungsten minerals would settle so solidly that when the bucket turned over at the top of the elevator the contents could be only partially dumped. In this case it was necessary to lift the material a distance of 34 ft. (10m.); hence some means had to be adopted to prevent settling, at least to such an extent that the material could be dumped from the buckets. To reduce the carrying time to a sufficient extent would have required a belt speed of 475 ft. (144.7 m.) per minute, which was not feasible. It was decided to try, by vibrating the belt about midway of its span, to keep the material sufficiently agitated during elevation to prevent settling. Underneath the rising side of the belt was placed a 12-in. (30.48-cm.) idler pulley, 18 ft. (5.5 m.) up in the total lift of 34 ft. The idler pulley was set eccentric by % in. (19 mm.) and it was hoped that the vibration thus imparted to the belt, running at a speed of 280 ft. (85 m.) per minute, would prevent settling in the buckets. It was found that the pressure of the belt on the idler, due to the small inclination of the elevator, was not sufficient to overcome sliding on the idler, and the agitation was insufficient to accomplish the desired purpose. The idler was then connected to the drive shaft of the elevator through an intermediate pulley, gearing down to a speed of 20 r.p.m., so that a positive vibration was imparted to the belt; this imparted enough motion to the belt to prevent settling and the contents of buckets dumped satisfactorily. This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The technique of calibrating gelatin mixtures proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966 is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example with the view to describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving. The prediction of the displacement, stress field and mode of fracture associated with a given rock structure, its initial stress field, and its physical properties is essential to rock mechanics and ground control. The basic approach is to assume the rock mass to behave as a continuous, homogeneous, and isotropic medium. The classical theory of elasticity is the simplest theory based on such a concept. Specification of the elastic constants, the initial state of stress in the ground, and the boundary conditions on stress and displacement allows one to predict stress and displacement within the body. Subsequently, provided that a criterion which governs rock fracture under various stress conditions has been established, a stability analysis of the rock structure can be performed. A natural extension of the present knowledge consists of removing some of the simplifying assumptions which characterize the analytical solutions based on the classical theory of elasticity. Complex geometry, the significance of tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space are some of the important factors which are neglected in the classical approach. A better insight into the real problem can be attained with either the finite element method of stress analysis or an experimental technique. The former has already been applied with success on several occasion 1-4 and is destined to render great service in the field of rock mechanics and ground control. The latter, which will be considered in this paper, has been used extensively in applications too numerous to be enumerated. Experimental technique involves either prototype testing, if the area to be studied is accessible, or model testing. Two- and three-dimensional photo-elastic analyses are very convenient means of obtaining the stress distribution in models of complex geometry. In general, such analyses are confined to studies of stress fields around openings which are sufficiently far removed from the surface boundary so that the stresses in their neighborhood are practically equal to those produced by an initial uniform stress field; i.e., so that gravitational effects are negligible. There are, however, many rock structures where these effects must be taken into account to attain a more realistic representation of the problem. Surface and near surface rock structures, systems of openings interacting with one another, and structural components loaded only by their own weight are some of the obvious examples. This paper was written to show how factors neglected in the usual analysis based on the classical theory of elasticity, can be taken into account when gelatin mixture models are used inconjunction with photoelastic methods. ALTHOUGH the present economic depression is felt in the petroleum industry, probably as much as in any other branch of American industry, the Petroleum Section of the Institute was well represented at the general sessions on Monday and at all of the seven division sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The seven sessions of the Division were so arranged as not to conflict and thus permitted members to hear the programs of all sessions.* The first meeting of the Petroleum Division was held on Tuesday afternoon; a joint session on engineering research and production engineering. Briquets consisting of pure artificial magnetite, pure artificial hematite, and mixtures of the two were reduced by hydrogen in a loss-in-weight furnace at temperatures in the range 500° to 1000° . The rate of reduction of the pure hematite briquets increased continuously with increased temperature. In contrast, the pure nmgnetite briquets exhibited a pronounced rate ninimutn at about 700°C. Metallographic studies of partially reduced briquets rerlealed that, at this temperature, the he.matite samples reduced in a topo-chemical manner while the magnetite ones reduced uniformly throughout, and after partial reduction their cross sections contained a mixture of iron and unreacted wustite grains. No iron shells could be detected on the surfices of any of these uwstite grains. X-ray diffraction investigations indicated that these grains had a rzinimum lattice parameter when they had been formed at the rate rninimum temperature. Also, it was found that an activation energy of 41,000 cal per mole zoas required for reduction when only these wustite grains were present. Thus, it is suggested that the overall reduction rate of the rnagnetile su?nples at temperatures in the range influenced by the rate nzinirnum phenomenon was limited by the rate qf iron ion diffusion in the unreacted wustite grains. THE rate minimum phenomenon, which has often been observed when reducing iron oxides at a temperature of about 700°C, is one of the most interesting, yet unresolved, problems in the field of reduction kinetics. Since most investigators are in agreement that this minimum is directly related to the transformation from a to y iron (which takes place at 911°C) and since it was not encountered during the present reduction tests, it will not be referred to in this vaver. fundamental laws of diffusion all agree that, as the temperature is increased, the rate of reduction should also increase. However, with certain ores, it has been found that their reduction rate actually decreases with an increase in temperature up to some value X where a minimum reduction rate is reached. With further temperature increases beyond X the rate becomes more rapid again. Temperature X is usually referred to as the "rate minimum temperature", while the overall type of behavior constitutes the "rate minimum phenomenon". This phenomenon has been reported by numerous investigators. They have found rate minima during the reduction of both artifiial' and natural374 magnetites and artificia15j6 and natural5" hematites. Rate minima have been observed when reducing high-purity material2 or low-grade ores,3'4 when studying particles in the micronsize range5 or relatively large agglomerates,g10 and during reduction with either hydrogen7 or carbon monoxide.11"2 Previously, this phenomenon has been attributed to many factors; these include sintering and recrystallization of the iron formed during reduction374 changes in microporosity of the ore upon redction,"" formation of dense iron shells around retained wustite grains,11716 and chem-isorption,17 to name only a few. However, most investigators who have reported a rate minimum merely speculated as to what seemed to influence it and they did not examine the fundamental causes. Consequently, the present experimental study was initiated in order to evaluate the basic factors which could be associated with this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS The experimental techniques, followed during this investigation, are similar to those which have been described previously.18 The chemically pure magnetic powder was prepared by partially reducing Fisher reagent-grade hematite with a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in a rotating-drum furnace. Three-quarter-inch diam cylindrical briquets which weighed about 12 g were formed from this magnetite powder and pure hematite powder. All of the briquets were sintered while they were slowly raised through the 1200°C hot zone of a vertical tube furnace. An argon stream was continually flushed through this furnace in order to prevent oxidation of the magnetite briquets, while in the case of the pure hematite briquets sintering was carried out in air. The sintered hematite briquets had a density of 5.06 g per cu cm while the density of the sintered magnetite briquets was 4.27 g per cu cm. The sintered briquets were reduced by purified hydrogen in a loss-in-weight furnace at temperatures in the range 500" to 1000°C. In all instances, the critical reducing gas velocity was exceeded and, in order to ensure that the results were reproducible, duplicate briquets of each type were reduced under each set of experimental conditions. A continuous record of the weight loss during reduction was obtained with the aid of a Statham transducer. The present experimental setup was capable of detecting a change in weight as small as 10 mg. Since a weight loss of over 2 g usually occurred during each reduction test, an accuracy of better than 0.5 pct of the total weight loss could be achieved. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Reducibility Tests. In the first set of experiments, pure hematite and pure magnetite briquets were used.

IMPORTANCE OF ROCK DRILLING. IT has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended. annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. 'The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become ,so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. The second Croton Aqueduct is a tunnel through rock, about 32 miles in length; material gneiss, almost as hard as granite. Its construction was made practicable by sinking

THE exact nature of the changes that take place in the iron-nickel alloys, giving rise to the interesting and useful expansion alloys in the Invar range, has yet to be fully understood. Similarly, the ternary iron-nickel-cobalt alloys, which also possess such commercially useful expansion characteristics, 1,2 are concerned with transformations that appear to be identical with those found in the parent iron-nickel alloys. The investigations on iron-nickel alloys in the range 26 to 29 per cent Ni have been reported by several authors" wherein it is shown that there are factors other than temperature, such as stress and grain size, which play an important part in determining the temperature at which the low-temperature transformation takes place. It will be shown in this paper that the ternary iron-nickel-cobalt alloys having nickel contents comparable to the alloys mentioned above behave in a parallel manner. The alloys in the range of 26 to 31 per cent Ni and 16 to 21 per cent Co have a coefficient of expansion of about 4.0 X 10-1 per degree Centi-grade, and the alloys in this range of composition find considerable application in making glass-to-metal seals, because these expansion properties so well match commercial glasses. The behavior of these alloys is not a simple matter, for it has been observed in alloys of 28.5 per cent Ni and 18.5 Co that severe working can cause the appearance of a second phase having a needlelike structure similar to the martensite structure in carbon steels. Fig. 1 shows the change brought about in an alloy of this composition when a strip of this material was cut with tin shears. This second phase has been identified as the body-centered cubic alpha phase, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of some of the preliminary investigations in the study of the changes involved in these alloys.

Deformation and recrystallization textures of the a solid solutions of Cu-P, Cu-As, and Cu-Sb alloys are examined as a function of composition. It is found that the deformation texture of copper is unckanged up to a composition of 0.43, 0.41, and 0.24 at. pct of phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony, respectzvely, and then the transition to the 70 : 30 brass type of deformation texture proceeds linearly as the logarithm of the solute content. Recrystallization textures consist of strong, new components that do not all bear the usual<111> rotational relation to the deformation components. The dependence of the deformation texture transitions and the recrystallization orientations upon composition and solute-element type is discussed. A systematic evolution of individual recrystallization components in the annealing texture of copper was portrayed as a function of germanium or tin content in a previous study.&apos; Similar patterns of tex-tural change have been observed with copper-zinc alloys,2 and in less detailed studies of other systems.3,4 In fact, most of the literature dealing with preferred orientations in copper alloys indicates that the influence of solute elements upon textures in copper is of one general type. As the alloy content of copper is increased, the deformation texture changes from the copper type to the 70:30 brass type, and the annealing texture undergoes a comparable change from the (001) [ loo] orientation of unalloyed copper to the {113} <211> type of 70:30 brass, with the notable exception of copper alloyed with Periodic Subgroup V-B elements.4-8 In almost every case it is possible to describe the reorientations after annealing as 30 to 40 deg rotations about <1ll> poles of the deformation components. Since there is apparently not much difference in the final textures of the copper binary systems already investigated, only a limited variety of preferred orientations has served as the basis for current theories of the origin of annealing textures. In order to test the validity of the proposed theories, and the possibility that the <111> rotations are not unique, it would be most desirable to study the reorientation relationships of additional, and heretofore unanalyzed, recrystallization components if such components exist. Examination of the literature reveals a good deal of uncertainty concerning preferred orientations in copper alloyed with elements in Subgroup V-B of the Periodic Table. Phosphorus is known to inhibit the cube texture in copper when present in amounts as low as 0.01 wt pct,8 but the recrystallized matrix that occurs instead of the cube orientation was reported as either random or weakly textured, with orientations not observed in Cu-Zn, Cu-Ge, or Cu-Sn alloys.4-9 A Cu-0.75 at. pct As alloy apparently contained, along with the (001)[100] and (113) <211> type of recrystallization components, {110} <112> and (110) <001> components, whereas an almost random distribution of orientations was found in alloys of higher arsenic content.4 A {110} <001> component also appeared in rolledand annealed Cu-Sb alloys, but otherwise the recrystallization textures of Cu-Sb alloys seem to con-

Models of photoelastic material were made to simulate a mine roof that had cracked over the edge of the pillars and at the center of the span. Models were restrained from moving laterally outward so they acted as flat arches. Uniform loading was approximated by loading the models along the bottom at eight points spaced equally along the span. It was found that for models with depth to span ratios of 1:3 to 1:6, the maximum stress at the top of the center crack could be calculated directly by the following formula: Elastic stresses in mine roofs composed of sedimentary beds are usually computed by assuming that the immediate roof bed acts as a fully restrained beam uniformly loaded by its own weight and by overlying strata. Very little work has been done to analyze stresses in roof beds or beams which contain vertical (normal to the span) or nearly vertical cracks. Yet every mining engineer has walked safely under roofs that show such cracks. As far back as 1933, Bucky&apos; made model studies of the effect of vertical cracks on the behavior of horizontal strata. He did not make any analysis of the stresses but did show that a cracked beam will stand safely under certain conditions, and also showed that a beam restrained at the ends can crack over the supports and in the middle without collapsing as long as the ends of the beam are not free to move laterally outward. The beam, or rather, part of the beam, acts like a flat arch and supports itself by pushing outward at its supports. In 1941 Evans2 treated analytically the problem of a beam cracked along so many planes perpendicular to the axis of the beam that no tensile stress can operate. He named this type of beam a "voussoir-beam" by analogy to the voussoir-arch. In 1962 ~a~cocks~ modified Evans&apos;s solution by including the effect of the shear stress component of the resultant force at the abutment. This paper gives the results of a photoelastic study of the stresses in a beam containing vertical cracks in the center of the span and over the supports. A

One does not have to be a specialist in metallography to realize that the properties of such an aggregate are essentially a summation in appropriate form of individual effects derived from the shape, size, placement or orientation and cohesive characteristics of the component particles. It is clearly of great importance to consider the various forms of discontinuity which may occur at the boundaries between these crystalline particles. When a number of &apos;particles each possessing the same orderly arrangement of atoms are brought together into a close-fitting system of purely haphazard contacts, not unlike a handful of snowflakes compacted into a snowball, the particles are said to possess random orientation. There are no generally accepted views concerning the arrangement of the atoms or the constitutional reaction between atoms where one crystal meets another, but these contact regions are characterized by strength rather than weakness and it is customary to require the presence of many rather than few boundaries in preparing metal for useful service. Under certain circumstances all of the particles in a metal may be nearly alike in orientation. Other general tendencies of orientation may be associated with particular forms of mechanical and thermal treatment. In contrast with these cases of fortuitous or statistical diversity of orientation, we often find adjacent particles united along a plane which possesses a grouping of atoms belonging equally well to both structures. This, of course, determines a fixed relationship between the two orientations and it is always possible to derive one from the other by some form of rotation or reflection prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure under consideration. Particles united in this manner are known as twin crystals although the term refers to the form of association rather than the number of individuals concerned.

I. An Outline of the Theory of the Sintering of Pure Metal Powders SINTERING may be defined as the process by which powders bond themselves into coherent bodies, usually, although not necessarily, under the influence of pressure and elevated temperature. For the sake of clarity and simplicity, the present survey will exclude from consideration the sintering of mixed or alloyed powders, with attendant complications, but at the risk of overlooking information of general applicability. Sintering in the presence of a liquid phase is thus automatically eliminated. The sintering of alloys involves much additional subject matter and deserves separate consideration. Since the literature of the subject is extensive and widely scattered, it will not be feasible to consider the contributions individually. Instead, the subject matter will be classified according to experimental observations and theory, and will be presented in summary form. It should be noted that the appended list of references does not constitute a complete bibliography; it includes only those works quoted below. More extensive bibliographies are included in several of the references; see particularly references 7, q, 28, 34, 38, 50, 52, 54 a "Bibliography on Powder Metallurgy" published by the Library of Congress and a pamphlet published by the Metals Disintegrating Co. entitled "The Field of Powder Metallurgy and Bibliography." II. Summary of Experimental Observations The following classified list is composed of general statements of established fact derived from the experimental results reported in the published literature. A few contested observations are included, because of their potential importance; these are labeled as such. Any satisfactory and complete theory must be capable of explaining all of the uncontested facts. Obviously, some important facts may be missing from this list and these may hold the key to the correct explanation of the sintering process, but the possible lack of such material should not deter attempts to understand the subject on the basis of what is available here. A. The Initial Bond at Room Temperature a. To a limited extent uncompressed powders and massive metals adhere at room temperature.28 Clean tin powder forms a weak "cake" on standing at room temperature, the strength increasing with time. Clean gold surfaces adhere on light contact,"&apos; as do those of many other substances, including nickel." b. The A. I. M. E. Subcommittee on Bituminous Mining has been trying for several years to secure the information that was collected by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing &. on the subsidence of its property caused by mining coal beneath it. The Marquette company was willing to have these data used, but it was impossible to obtain them because the records had been filed away. About two years ago these records became available and the engineering data presented herewith were compiled from them by R. L. Auchmuty, assisted by L. E. Young, who was connected with the collection of the information. On account of the cost, it is impossible to reproduce all of the data here, although the original information is on file with the records of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. The accompanying charts show representative and average data and give only the engineering information with enough description to tell how it was obtained. PRobably the most complete records of subsidence due to coal mining in the United States are those compiled by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. at LaSalle, 111. These records, covering a period of more than three years, were compiled and used as evidence during the suit of the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. vs. the Oglesby Coal Co. at Oglesby, LaSalle County, Ill., in which the cement company successfully endeavored to stop the coal company from mining under its property. Fig. 1 shows a typical section of the geological formation. The cement company was mining the LaSalle limestone which lies about 125 ft. under the surface. The limestone is 30 to 35 ft. thick and underlain by about 15 ft. of shale. The cement company was mining about 20 ft. of the limestone, and in some places 10 to 12 ft. of the underlying shale, by the room and pillar method. The mining of the limestone always preceded the mining of the shale. The coal company was mining by longwall advance methods the NO. 2 seam of coal 42 in. thick underlying the limestone bed by 435 to 470 ft. The coal mine, a very old one, had largely mined out its original property

THe internal friction of metals has been studied frequently at elevated temperatures.1-4 In most cases it rises rapidly with increasing temperature. The notable exceptions are ferromagnetic materials, and lead.2 This paper describes an investigation of the general features of the high-temperature internal friction of 70-30 alpha brass. Experimental Method The internal friction of a metal is a measure of the rate at which it dissipates energy of vibration. The measure adopted here, I/Q, is (I/2p) times the specific damping capacity, a measure commonly used by engineers. In the measurements of this investigation, the stress level was kept so low that the observations were independent of the stress, The general method of making such measurements, and of observing temperature of a specimen during a measurement, has been described.5.6 The driver and detector coils were wound with wire insulated with glass thread, in order to withstand the high temperatures used. In previous work electrical eddy currents in the specimen served as the coupling between the mechanical vibration of the specimen and the electrical circuits of the driver and detector. The high values of the internal friction in the present investigation rendered this coupling insufficient. In order to increase this coupling, pole pieces cut from ordinary telephone diaphragms were attached to the specimen. A mixture of French chalk and water glass proved a satisfactory cement. All measurements were made at the fundamental frequency for transverse vibration, which lay between 600 and goo cycles per second. Specimens The measurements described herein were made upon a single cylindrical rod of brass, kindly furnished by Dr. Cyril Stanley Smith, of the American Brass Co. This rod was the specimen E of the set of alpha-brass rods described in an earlier paper.6 Successively larger grain sizes were obtained by annealing at .successively higher temperatures. A slice was cut off one end after each set of measurements. Grain counts were made on each slice by W. E. Lindlief, of the American Brass Co. Nine fields were viewed on each piece, located as shown in Fig. I. Results are given in Table I. The grain size is defined in the usual way; namely, Grain size = I/n1/2 where n is the mean number of grains per square millimeter.
