Although alumina constitutes about 15% of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception of the alumina in bauxite. The United States has a variety of nonbazurite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline venite. Each of these resources is discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, and potential recovery. Potential byproducts include alica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

PROBABLY no large industry in the United States is in greater need of technologic research leading to economic improvement than the coal industry. It has suffered severely from increasing substitution of petroleum and natural gas for coal and its products in the fuel markets. Part of this substitution is due to the greater convenience and suitability of liquid and gaseous fuels for special purposes, and part of it has been due to the extensive research programs conducted or sponsored by the petroleum and allied industries in the past 2 decades. A recent estimate1 places these expenditures at $100,000,000 a year.

ENACTMENT of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

Steam coal quality is less stringent than metallurgical coal quality. Steam coal is prepared either by cleaning a full-size range of raw coal or cleaning coarse coal only, leaving the fine coal raw. The latter scheme is more cost competitive. It is particularly applicable to US eastern soft coal where low ash coal is concentrated in fine sizes. For raw coal size separation the Rotating Probability Screen, developed by the British Coal Board, may be used for easy change of raw coal separating size, and to avoid screen deck plugging when handling wet and clayey raw coals.

While I was engaged in the preparation of a catalogue or list of mineral localities of the United States, east of the one hundredth meridian, for the U. S. Theoretical modelling of a proposed sub-level open stoping mining system was carried out to assess pillar instability and potential for hanging wall caving. This modelling was done, at first, without detailed information concerning the rock mass structure and classification. After mining commenced, the deviance in behaviour from that predicted by the modelling indicated that the structure was having an appreciable modifying effect on behaviour. Further analysis was carried out with detailed engineering geological information and a recently developed pillar design method. The outlined procedure produced results for pillar size and strength that explained the behaviour that had been recorded.

The sub-level caving mining method has been applied in base metal mines in Canada under a wide range of ore body and wall rock conditions. This method has been used for primary, as well as secondary mining of both small and large ore bodies of varying ore values. Early experiences of almost all operations were somewhat disappointing. This paper details the initial problems encountered, the design changes made and solutions evolved. Additional experience and the development of operating skills, have helped the method gain acceptance as a viable method for the mining conditions to which it has been adopted.

The third special war meeting of the New York Section was held on Thursday evening, Sept. 27, in joint session with the New York Section of the American Electrochemical Society, in conjunction with the Third National Exposition -of-Chemical Industries, at the Grand Central Palace. The topic for discussion was ferro-alloys, and the supply' of raw materials for their manufacture. After a few introductory remarks by President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, and President Colin G. Fink of the American Electrochemical Society, Mr. C. S. Newcomb presented his paper on "Chrome Mining and Concentration."

The Government and Leeco concluded a cost-sharing agreement in 1976 to demonstrate longwall mining of a thin coalbed, 1 m or less, in a mine near Hyden, Ky. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for mine design and equipment specifications. Four- legged shields, a face conveyor, a stage loader and an in-web shearer were selected to operate on a 183 m face. Lengwall mining began in 1979 and initially was slowed by low mining height and equipment problems. A rock mechanics program provides early warning capability and criteria for future mine design. Monitoring of surface effects is included.

The following is a case study illustrating the use of thin sections and polished sections of crude ore to predict metallurgical response. By examining polished sections of the metallurgical products, the textural and mineralogical reasons for unsatisfactory separation can be explained. An area of oxidized Negaunee Iron-Formation located south of Negaunee, Michigan, in the Marquette Iron Range, has been considered for roast reduction-magnetic separation. Preliminary metallurgical studies and subsequent pilot plant testing produced varied results. SYNOPSIS It can be shown that the properties of intact rock are relatively unimportant in rock slope stability and that failures are controlled by structural discontinuities such as bedding planes, joints and faults in the rock mass. The frequency, orientation and inclination of these discontinuities as well as their strength characteristics are important factors to be considered in any rock slope analysis and their influence will be demonstrated by means of a number of practical examples. Methods for determining the mechanical properties of discontinuities will be reviewed and the interpretation of the strength test results for use in stability computations will be discussed.

OBSERVATIONS have been made that the substitution of antimony for bismuth in Bi2Te3 leads to anomalies in some of the electrical and magnetic properties of the Bi2Te3-5S2TeS alloy system at the composition ratios 2 Bi2Te3 : 1 Sb2Tes and 1 Bi2Te3 : 2 Sb2Te3. This study investigated roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in eastern Kentucky and utilized geologic methods for predicting roof conditions in advance of mining. In the Highsplint mine, the roof was classified in four categories or conditions: Condition A and B (Laminated Shale); Condition C (Rolling Sandstone with Shale in Pockets); and Condition D (Zone of Major Sandstone Roll(s)). Structure contour and isopach maps of the Darby coal bed and associated immediate roof rocks were wed to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. Trend mapping in the mine and on outcrop provided more detailed control for roof projections.

ANALYTICAL results have previously been presented for the diffusion-controlled solution of a second phase in a finite medium for planar, cylindrical, and spherical geometries.' These results were obtained by numerical methods using digital computer techniques and are applicable not only to the stage of the problem where the unstable phase shrinks to zero size, but also the subsequent stage where the concentration gradients in the matrix phase become negligible (essentially complete homogenization).
