A new theory of work hardening is developed which rests on only a few simple principles and is applicable to a wide variety of materials and dislocation structures. It explains, qualitatively, the general characteristics of the three-stage shear stress-shear strain curve of fcc metals, as well as the most important features connected with easy glide. The value of, the work-hardening coefficient in stage 11, is derived quantitatively, from first principles, and is shown to be insensitive to many changes in detailed dislocation behavior. The low rate at which energy is stored during mechanical working in stage 11, the dependence of slip line length on stress, and the so-called Cottrell-Stokes law are explained. Although the theory is primarily developed for fcc metals and alloys, it is largely applicable also to some other materiuls, and in particular apparently to poly crystalline simple steels in theh linear range of hardening. FOR pure fcc metals and alloys, after many different pretreatments and under a great variety of testing conditions, the well-known three-stage work-hardening curve is commonly observed. Moreover, the work-hardening coefficient in stage 11, 011, bears an almost constant relationship to G, the modulus of rigidity, such that K = G/Brr" = 300, within a factor of about 2 either way. The very fact that the three-stage curve and the value of K are so very persistent, can hardly be understood except on the assumption that some quite simple phenomena are responsible. In this light all available theories of work hardening must be judged unsatisfactory: Each of them is based on some quite specific dislocation model, while it is known that metals with similar values of K may have widely different dislocation structures, for example, dislocation tangles in the case of pure fcc metals, and piled-up groups of dislocations in a-brasstype alloys. Thus, while a particular theory might conceivably represent a special case with a reasonable degree of accuracy, it cannot possibly have illuminated the underlying principle. Another severe criticism applying to the presently most widely discussed theories is that they employ empirical or even quite unexplained parameters in order to arrive at a numerical value of K. This indicates that some vital aspect of the work-hardening process has remained unexplained. In the present paper, a new theory of work-hardening is developed which does not suffer from the above shortcomings. It is derived from first principles, and is founded on the realization that the underlying causes for the three-stage work-harden- ing curve and for the persistence of the numerical value of O,, must be few and simple. As a first step it is shown herein that the experimental oklservations on "easy glide" can be explained on the assumption that in this stage dislocations multiply, beginning in a number of restricted area:;, and from there penetrate into crystal regions still substantially free of glide dislocations until a quasi-uniform dislocation distribution has been established. During "easy glide", the resistance to the movement of the foremost dislocations, advancing into still largely a dislocation-free regions, is believed to control the flow stress. This resistance is determined by various factors, among them the reaction of the dislocations against bowing-out into loops, which is due to their line tension. Without such bowing-out no dislocation multiplication would occur, but the corresponding contribution to the flow stress stays practically constant all through stage I. According to the present theory, stage TI begins as soon as there are no more areas left into which newly formed dislocations have not yet penetrated, i.e., as soon :is a quasi-uniform dislocation density has been attaned. Regardless of how, in detail, the dislocations should happen to be arranged at the end of "easy glide", whether in pileups or tangles, on one glide system or on several, the stress necessary to overcome the line tension of the segments must now increase, because the dislocation density increiises while the average free dislocation length decreases. It is argued that all other contributions to the flow stress stay at about the same level as in stage I, and that the said increase in the stress necessary to bow out dislocation segments into loops is responsible for the major part of work hardening in stage 11. Stage TII of the stress-strain curve is explained by largely follouing the ideas of Seeger and his co-workers; however, it is pointed out that the start of stage m may on occasion indicate the onset of "conservative climb" instead of cross slip. Indirect evidence indicates that linear work hardening persists even under the profuse action of cross slip, but at a lower rate. Only when, in addition to cross slip, climb operates extensively, does the work-hardening rat,. drop sharply, ultimately down to zero. BRIEF SURVEY OF EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE The stress-strain curve of crystals of many different substances are qualitatively similar. No significant permanent plastic deformation takes place below the so-called "critical resolved shear stress". Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment, these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center's 900-lb per hr pilot plant, approximately 85% of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to 51000 ppm equivalent SiO*, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of =16 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water. Water quality is perhaps as important to flotation as are the reagents used. The character of water is extremely variable, depending on whether the source is a well, lake, or stream, upon the season and temperature, upon prior use, and upon the character of the watershed. All of these factors influence the water hardness and the quantity of other dissolved inorganic salts, turbidity, dissolved and suspended organic matter, dissolved gases, and pH. Frequently, the differences in water quality can measurably influence flotation selectivity, often to the point of spelling success or failure. Water hardness is particularly troublesome in flotation systems employing fatty acids, but other unrecognized constituents may also contribute to peculiarities in flotation behavior. Furthermore, a given water source may be entirely satisfactory in one flotation system, but entirely inappropriate in another. In recent years, society has given more attention than formerly to water use, even in areas where water is plentiful. However, both the demands of a growing population, with increased per capita needs, and also those of industry must be met. As a result, riparian rights must be negotiated with the appropriate government agency or agencies so that consumption of water is often allocated or otherwise controlled. Furthermore, the disposal of off-process industrial and domestic water is coming under the increasing scrutiny of these same governmental units. In these respects, the mineral industry is no exception, so that conservation, water reclamation, and reuse may be expected to assume increasing importance. In 1932, it was stated that, "water reclamation is generally more expensive than the economy in water and reagents resulting from its use. It is employed only if it is urgent to save water."' The economic aspects of this statement may still be true, but the unrestricted use of water is becoming less and less an option of the user. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in which water reclamation and treatment were undertaken to develop procedures for, and to assess the effects of, water reuse on the flotation treatment of nonmagnetic taconites. This investigation is a logical extension of previous work described by the author and associates at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center employing selective flocculation-desliming and anionic flotation of silica from low-grade, nonmagnetic iron ores2,8 The requirements for the selective flocculation-de-sliming and the anionic flotation of silica processes determined the direction of the investigation. Previous studies had indicated that pH levels of about 11.0 and 11.8 were required for selective flocculation and flota-tlon, respectively. The calcium content of the water was believed to be of importance in both of these operations, and since Minneapolis tap water with a Ca(I1) content of about 16 ppm had been successfully used, an attempt was made to reclaim the process water at an equal level of dissolved calcium. Additionally, the objective was to nullify or effectively limit the effects of dispersants and fatty acid residuals from prior stages of processing. Last but not least, the system of water treatment had to have the capability of reducing turbidities to workable levels. With about half of the effluent being derived from the selective flocculation-desliming step and carrying about 25,000 ppm of highly dispersed, suspended fines, this last objective appeared formidable at the outset. Procedures for water reclamation were derived, in part, from well-known mineral dressing practices, from past observations and investigations, and from concepts contained in various pertinent publications on water treatment."c These procedures involved: 1) flocculation with lime and poly electrolyte-type flocculants, 2) lime-soda-ash softening, 3) chemical precipitation, and 4) mineral surface adsorption. Control was exercised at various stages of water reclamation by frequent measurements of Ca(11), pH, and turbidity.

The stoichiometry, structure, and stability of the internzediate phases formed between zinc and some of the rare earth (RE) metals were systematically exarnined by means of a recording effusion balance and X-ray diffraction analyses. In the La-, Ce-, PY-, Nd-, and Y-Zu systems, at or below about 600 C, the following sequences of phases (REZnx) were found: La, x = 1, 2, 4.0, 5.25, 7.3, 17/2, 11, and 13.0;' Ce, x = 1, 2, 3, 11/3, 4.3, 5.25, 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Pr,x = 1,2, 3, 11/3 ,* 4.3, 5.3(?), 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Nd,x = 1,2, 3,* 11/3,* 4.3, 6.5, 8.5,* and 11; Y,x = 1,2,3, 11/3, 4.5, 5.0, 17/2,* and 12.* The structure types of all these phases were classified. In addition, lattice parameters were obtained for the first time for the pluses denoted by asterisks. In the absence of de tectable valency or electronegativity effects the systesnatic trends in the results have been ascribed to the effects of' the lanthanide contraction. For example, the maximum number of zinc atoms in the coordination polyhedron surrounding the RE atom decreases from twenty-four to twenty-two to twenty as the size of the RE atom decreases. THE structures and compositions of a great many intermetallic phases (e.g., the Laves phases) are known to be based primarily, but not exclusively, on the space-filling efficiency of various modes of packing together atoms of different sizes. The valencies and electronegativities of the constituent atoms are, however, also influential. In extreme cases hypothetical intermetallic phases which fulfill the efficient spacefilling requirements may not be present in the constitutional diagram because of thermodynamic instability brought about by the operation of valency or electronegativity factors. Hence, for a detailed study of the influence of atomic size on alloy structure and composition, it would be desirable to minimize variations of valency and electronegativity. The intermetallic phases formed by the rave earths (RE) with some common partner offer an excellent opportunity for isolating the effects of size from those of valency and electronegativity. The rare earths exhibit a large, but smooth, decrease in size (the lanthanide contraction) in the series from lanthanum to lutetium when inter comparison is made for a common valence state, e.g., isolated atoms or trivalent ions. The elements yttrium and scandium are frequently included as pseudo rare earths; their sizes place them in the vicinity of dysprosium and lutetium, respectively. The electronegativities of RE elements vary by less than 10 pet. The trivalent state is the most common; however, the well-known tendency of cerium, praseodymium, and terbium to achieve higher valencies, and of samarium, europium, and ytterbium to seek lower valencies, requires that caution be exercised in the assumption of equal valencies. In the present study the existence, constitution, and structure of each of the numerous intermediate phases formed by zinc with lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, or yttrium were examined systematically and in detail. The investigation was conducted by a recording effusion balance technique and by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results enrich our knowledge of the phase diagrams of these systems. In addition, they present some clear-cut evidences of the operation of the size factor alone. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus. The mode of operation of the recording effusion balance and its application to phase studies have been discussed in detail elsewhere.' In this work, an effusion cell containing a finely divided alloy was suspended within an evacuated tube from the beam of an analytical balance. The tube was immersed in a massive molten salt bath whose temperature was controlled to within 0.5o C during each experiment. The loss in weight of the alloy owing to effusion of zinc* was continuously recorded. Two effusion cells, 1/2 in. diam by 1 in. high, were machined from tantalum rods. Two orifices were drilled laterally into the walls of each cell. The orifice areas were determined by calibration with pure zinc: cell A had a total orifice area of 6.5 x 10-41 sq cm, and cell B an orifice area of 9.8 x 10-3 sq cm. By appropriate choices of orifice area and temperature the wide range of volatilities from pure zinc to pure rare earth metal could be investigated. X-ray diffraction powder photographs were made at room temperature with a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with both filtered CuKa radiation and filtered CrKa radiation. Lattice parameters were refined by a computer-programmed least-squares analytical treatment which incorporated appropriate extrapolation techniques.2 Frequent use was also made of a special computer program3 designed to generate a powder pattern from an assumed structure in order to verify structural assignments. Materials. Lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium were purchased from the Lunex Co., cerium from the Cerium Metals Corp., and praseodymium from the St.

-4s a result of world economic conditions brought about by the European war and the consequent loss of European markets for Venezuelan crude, production in Venezuela decreased from 205,433,000 bbl. in 1939 to 186,134,000 bbl. in 1940, or 9.4 per cent. This decline interrupted a steady annual increase in production from the country, which had been continuous since 1932. The Maracaibo Lake Basin in western Venezuela accounted for 135,738,000 bbl. during 1940, or 73 per cent of the total, as against eastern Venezuela's production of 50,396,000 bbl., or 27 per cent of the total for the country. Corresponding figures for 1939 were 167,688,000 bbl., or 82 per cent of the total from the Lake Basin, and 37,744,000 bbl., or 18 per cent from the east. These comparisons indicate the increasing importance of the newer developments in eastern Venezuela, but it is unlikely that production from the east will ever exceed that from the west. In all, 429 new wells were completed in Venezuela during 1940 as compared to 438 in 1939. Of the 1940 completions, 411 were in proved areas and 18 were wildcats; 389 (95 per cent) of the exploitation wells drilled were producers, I was a gas well and 21 were dry holes, while 6 (33 per cent) of the wildcats drilled were producers and 12 (67 per cent) were dry; 263 of the exploitation wells and 4 of the wildcats were in the Maracaibo Lake Basin and 148 exploitation wells and 14 wildcats were in the east, mostly in the State of Anzoategui. Exploration of the light-oil areas in the Tia Juana and Lagunillas fields was con- tinued during the year with favorable results. Along the lake shore, drilling was confined principally to fill-in wells in the La Kosa, Tia Juana, Laguni!las and Bachaquero fields, although some important semi-exploratory drilling was done in the Pueblo Viejo area between Lagunillas and Bachaquero fields. The only other developments of particular interest in the west were the successful completion of a step-out well lying to the south of the former southern limit of Mene Grande field, which adds considerable proved acreage to that field; and the failure of two wildcats that were drilled near the Colombian border to determine whether the productive sands of the Petrolea field in the Barco Concession, Colombia, extend into Venezuelan territory. In the east no new fields were discovered during the year, although five wildcats were completed as producers. Three of these, Guario No. I, Jusepin-56 and LM-I (Leona), discovered important extensions to previously proved areas and the remaining two, Cantos-I and SPN-I (Socororo), were subsequently proved to have tapped productive sands of small extent and operations in these areas have been suspended. The greatest activity in the east was concentrated in the Oficina field, where 105 new wells were completed during the year and production was increased from 22,540 bbl. per day during January 1940 to 57,627 bbl. per day during December 1940. Important development work was also done in the Jusepin. San Joaquin and El Koble fields.

IT was once aptly said that a sign of approaching senility is ceasing work on a subject and beginning to talk about it. Perhaps that explains why, after many years in which part of my duties has been the training of college men in various branches of petroleum exploration geophysics, I have now begun to talk about it. In making an outline of what I believe ought to be discussed under the general heading of the title, I found it almost impossible to subdivide the ideas into an ordered set of discrete subjects. Rather, the pertinent remarks seemed to interlock almost everywhere. The consequence is that it will be necessary to start with the conclusions and then try to justify them by jumping back and forth. However, based on the types of men with whom I have had to deal, the subject naturally divides itself into two parts. In the first part, I should like to deal with the case of those undergraduates whose natural bent is toward the physical sciences and who may decide to enter the geophysical fold as a career. The other part will deal with those many men, geologists and engineers for the most part, who have drifted into exploration geophysics by one means or another, and whom it is necessary to train for geophysical work while they are occupied in their routine jobs. Here it may be in point to remark that most men in exploration geophysics at present have been developed from precisely the latter group, and that the problem of training here is of great importance even though, in this paper, it will perforce occupy the secondary place. TRAINING OF A GEOPHYSICIST The outstanding reason for the perplexing problem on the training of a geophysicist is that ideas differ on the answer to the question: "What is a geophysicist?" In any of the scientific "specialties," like physics, for example, it is relatively simple to pigeonhole a man as being qualified to call himself a physicist. That appellation applied to an individual does not mean that he has mastered only the branches of intellectual endeavor usually associated under the broad name of "physics." We expect him also to have a more than mere acquaintance with mathematics and chemistry and some understanding of most of the other sciences. But note this important point-we expect our physicist, whom we have chosen as an example, to be intelligently trained so that, if necessary, he can and will know how and where he can get the proper information on a subject in which he is not a specialist; he will know how to absorb that information and turn it to his uses. It seems to me that this is the outstanding characteristic of a man who can truly call himself a scientist: that he is a specialist in one of the broad branches of science and that he has enough training and discipline in the scientific approach so that, when called upon to do so, he can intelligently absorb knowledge from another bordering science (and all sciences not only border upon one another to some extent, but more often, overlap one another), and

• Pellets of concentrated iron ore have been smelted in the blast furnace by Armco and the results proved satisfactory. Various percentages of pellet burdens were tried and it has been found that charges up to 70 pct pellets are workable. •In the reorganization of the Department of the Interior, two new assistant secretaries were appointed and the work divided between the four assistant secretaries. C. Girard Davidson will head a division of mineral resources including the Bureau of Mines, Geological Survey, Division of Oil and Gas and Division of Geography. •Germanium, one of the rarest of metals and a wartime strategic material, has been discovered almost in the shadow of the Capitol. The only catch is that the scattered nature of the deposits makes profitable recovery extremely doubtful. Nevertheless, experts have tabbed the concentration in the District of Columbia area the world's second richest known concentration of the element. • Cakes of mica, weighing up to 500 lb, have been formed at the Colorado School of Mines by a new "cool hearth" method. The process avoids use of crucibles and contains the molten mica in a basin of unmelted raw mixture from which the melt was derived. Crystallization takes place in this melting basin which forms a center pool surrounded by a solid cool mass of the unmelted raw mixture. • William 1. Baxter, of the International Economic Research Bureau, predicts a period of deflation because of war-essential restrictions on consumer credit and materials use. He stated; "the recent prosperity was based mainly on the sales boom in autos, homes, and household accessories." •Two subsidiaries of United States Steel have decided to build four new ships immediately to augment iron ore and limestone carrying capacity on the Great Lakes to meet demands created by the national defense emergency. •The Norfolk and Western Railway is making a complete change over to coal to drive its locomotives. •A national roster of scientific personnel similar to the one used in the last war will be established by the Office of Education, by agreement with the National Security Resources Board. The new unit, the National Scientific Register Project, will make studies of the Nation's scientific manpower supply and recommend steps to increase the numbers of skilled personnel where needed. •National Lead Co. will start construction immediately of new facilities at St. Louis, Mo., for production of titanium pigments for paints. Producers of titanium pigments have been under considerable pressure to meet all demands from paint manufacturers, particularly for titanium dioxide. •The basic criteria for deferment of reservists in civilian occupations are (1) the Department of Labor List of Critical Occupations, and (2) the Department of Commerce List of Essential Activities, both of which were announced Aug. 3. Fundamentally, the reservist deferred must be engaged in a critical occupation which is necessary to a highly essential activity, and he will be deferred only until he can be satisfactorily replaced in that occupation. A delay in call to active duty, it was emphasized, may not be considered as an indefinite exemption from military service.

J. W. Tomlison—It seems probable that the author's conclusion, that the conductivity of the slags decreases with increasing content of FeO, is erroneous due to the method of plotting the data. Thus, the results of other workers2,3,13,14 show that the conductivity of molten oxide slags increase with increasing temperature, indicating that the trend of the curve shown by the authors is due to the fact that the data for the slags containing relatively small amounts of FeO are at higher temperatures than those for the slags containing relatively large amounts of this oxide. In this connection the work of Wejnarth2 may be mentioned in which in an investigation of a series of iron silicate slags, the conductivity was found to increase with increasing content of FeO; the fact that the author's slags contained TiO2 probably does not affect the issue since it has been shown15,16 that, at least as far as conductivity is concerned, this oxide behaves essentially the same as silica and that mixtures of the oxide with silica have a very low conductivity of the order of 10-4 mhos at 1750°C. In connection with the experimental technique it may be noted that bubbles of carbon monoxide would probably be produced at the surface of the graphite electrodes in contact with the melts thus rendering the accuracy of the measurements somewhat open to question. J. L. Wyatt (author's reply)—Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to works by Martin and Derge, which indicate that slag systems containing no TiO2 are charac-terized by an increase in conductivity with an increase in temperature. Further, I have cited his examples, which indicate a drastic increase with small temperature change. The results of Dr. Derge's work have no bearing whatsoever on the results of this paper, since the slags under study here contained up to 70 pct TiO2. One cannot generalize on slag systems as a whole on the basis of any one family, for there are definite compounds of ionic nature formed in each system, and the ionic mobilization of these is something that cannot be determined without actual experimentation. Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to an unpublished work which, he claims, shows that titanium dioxide behaves the same as silica in regard to conductivity. Since I have not had 'an opportunity to see the paper I cannot make any comments, but unless the same slag system was studied there can be no specific comparison of results. If the decrease in conductivity of the slag was due entirely to temperature phenomena, as Dr. Tomlinson indicates, then one is without an explanation of the values shown in the paper for slags containing from 10 to 20 pct FeO. I cannot agree that the deviation in findings was appreciably related to temperature change; further, I believe this point was completely covered in the paper. An apparatus has been developed which permits selective acidizing of producing formations and determination of the relative permeability of a formation by fluid injection. This apparatus, known as the "Electric Pilot," is an electrical fluid-interface locator, the electrical circuit of which is completed when the elec-tcodes in the well are in contact with a conductive fluid, but is not completed when immersed in a nonconductive fluid. Results are given for a number of typical acidizing applications in which the interface locator was used to control the acid. Description of the method used in making a permeability survey and the data obtained are also included. Introduction Early in the development of the acidizing industry it was recognized that one of the most important problems to be solved in the chemical treatment of any well was the determination of what part of the exposed section in the well should be treated and the selection of the technique that would insure treatment of the desired section. One of the first techniques adopted for assisting in proper placement of the acid, which is still widely used, is the method of confining the acid to the producing section by means of a column of oil, which is known as the Carr1 method of treatment, named for its inventor. In the Carr method it is not possible to selectively acidize a specific horizon in a multiple pay zone, so many improvements and modifications of the basic Carr technique were devised to accomplish this result. In order to overcome the possibility of the acid entering an undesirable section at the bottom of the well, organic gel plugs2 were introduced into the bottom of the well, which served to halt the entrance of the treating solution into these zones.3 These chemical gels later liquefied because of bacterial action and were removed from the well with the produced fluid. In fields where a gas cap existed, as in the Goldsmith field of Ector County, Texas) it was imperative that a treating technique be evolved that would confine the acid to the oil-producing zone below the gas cap. By so doing the oil-productive capacity of the wells could be improved without greatly increasing the gas production and this would lower the gas-oil ratio of the well. ~h, technique employed4 to achieve this effect utilized two pumps, one for pumping the chemicals down the tubing, the other to simultaneously force oil down the annular space to confine the acid to the oil pay, thus preventing the chemicals from entering the upper gas-bearing zones. Experience has indicated that gas wells and certain types of oil wells respond better to ''stage treating.'' This technique utilizes the introduction of a certain volume of acid and then allows the well to ''clean up99 before introduction of the next and usually successively larger stages. Where such methods are employed steps must be taken to keep a disproportionate share of the acid from entering the most permeable and previously treated Zones. A special tool

As a part of a general investigation of the separation of bitumen from hydrocarbon mixtures a study was made of a restricted quaternary system composed of methane, decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The work was limited to a pressure of 8000 psi, a temperature of 220 °F, and to a fixed relative proportion of decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The measurements permitted the determination of the distribution of these components in each of the fluid phases. It was not possible to distinguish a second liquid phase in the course of these measurements. Gas-liquid equilibrium "constants" of each of the components were found to vary markedly with the composition of the system while temperature and pressure remained fixed. INTRODUCTION The separation of bitumen frorn naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has been of importance for a number of years in the production of petroleum, especially in the California area. The deposition of this material from crude oils was noted in earlier studies of the solubility of natural gas in crude oil.¹,²,3 Studies of the separation of bitumen from crude oils from the Greeley and Santa Fe Springs fields were carried out."." The behavior of these systems appeared complex and studies of two restricted ternary systems involving mixtures of n-pentane, tetralin, and bitumen,' and of decane, tetralin; and hitumen, confirmed this belief. Reviews of the literature pertaining to the separation of bitumen from naturally occuring and refined hydrocarbons are available." The important effect of methane in the separation of bitu- men from naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures was apparent from the earlier studies and for that reason it appeared desirable to investigate a restricted quarternary system involving mixtures of methane. decane, tetralin, and bitumen; data concerning the behavior of mixtures of decane. tetralin. and bitumen having already been obtained.V his study was restricted to a pressure of 8000 psi," a temperatue of 220° F, and fixed relative proportions of bitumen, decane. and tetralin. This composite constituent, hereinafter designated as the less volatile constituent, was made up of 0.0455 weight fraction bitumen. 0.0909 weight fraction decane, and 0.8636 weight fraction tetralin. The experimental method involved bringing together mixtures of methane and the less volatile constituent in varying proportions in a constant volume container at the pressure and temperature indicated above. The composition of each of the phases was determined and from this the extent of the separation of bitumen was established. MATERIALS The bitumen used in this investigation was obtained from the same stocks employed in earlier studies. The crude material from the North Coles Levee field was stored in the laboratory] in a closed drum for a period of five years. Several samples from this stock were subjected to refining operations which were described earlier,' and every effort was made to follow the same procedure in all cases. Rather, the pertinent remarks seemed to interlock almost everywhere. The consequence is that it will be necessary to start with the conclusions and then try to justify them by jumping back and forth. However, based on the types of men with whom I have had to deal, the subject naturally divides itself into two parts. In the first part, I should like to deal with the case of those undergraduates whose natural bent is toward the physical sciences and who may decide to enter the geophysical fold as a career. The other part will deal with those many men, geologists and engineers for the most part, who have drifted into exploration geophysics by one means or another, and whom it is necessary to train for geophysical work while they are occupied in their routine jobs. Here it may be in point to remark that most men in exploration geophysics at Present have been developed from precisely the latter group, and that the problem of training here is of great importance even though, in this paper, it will perforce occupy the secondary place. Training oF a Geophysicist The outstanding reason for the perplexing problem on the training of a geophysi-cist is that ideas differ on the answer to the question: "what is a geophysicistp" ln any of the scientific "specialties," like physics, for example, it is relatively simple to pigeonhole a man as being qualified to call himself a physicist. That appellation applied to an individual does not mean that he has mastered only the branches of intellectual endeavor usually associated under the broad name of "physics." we expect him also to have a more than mere acquaintance with mathematics and chemist~ and some understanding of most of the other sciences. But note this important point—we expect our physicist, whom we have chosen as an example, to be intelligently trained so that, if necessary, he can and will know how and where he can get the proper information on a subject in which he is not a specialist; he will know how to absorb that information and turn it to his uses. It seems to me that this is the outstanding characteristic of a man who can truly call himself a scientist: that he is a specialist in one of the broad branches of science in that he has enough training and discipline in the scientific approach so that, when called upon to do so, he can inteugently absorb knowledge from another bordering science (and all sciences not only border upon one another to some extent, but more often, overlap One another), and

Fox the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wettable plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to retreat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both by-product coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to l00 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands 1 in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within ±0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation's mines could not clean the fine sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to 0. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼ -in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.

This paper addresses some of the financial risk hedging mechanisms available to a corporation contemplating entering the mining business at a significant level of investment. The approach which I have adopted is that of a case study relating to the risk hedging aspects of Brascan Limited's acquisition of 46% of Noranda Inc., formerly Noranda Mines Limited, followed by some remarks on options open to mining companies for reducing financial risks. To appreciate the rationale for Brascan committing over (Can.) $800 million to the natural resource sector, some knowledge of Brascan's parent company, Edper Investments Ltd., is required at the outset. Edper Investments, prior to acquiring a 48% interest in Brascan, controlled Trizec Corporation, one of the world's largest property companies. Edper also was involved in the financial services sector through Continental Bank of Canada and Hees International Corporation. For some considerable time prior to Edper's investment in Brascan, Edper felt a need to provide a better balance to its portfolio of property and financial services. Brascan was rich in cash, relatively unleveraged, and with important existing holdings in natural resources and consumer products. The acquisition of a controlling interest in Brascan provided an opportunity to balance Edper's portfolio of property and financial services with world class acquisitions in natural resources, supplemented by consumer products and financial services. The end result of Brascan's activities over the last few years is illustrated by the following analysis of the book value of Brascan's assets at the end of December 1983. The large emphasis on natural resources came about from the fact that for Canadians operating mainly in Canada, natural resources were attractive. Put another way, the by-product metal credits offered a net operating cost advantage with respect to many of the metals mined. Our energy costs also appeared to provide Canada's natural resource industries with an advantage. We considered Canadian mining expertise as amongst the world's finest, as were the exploration equipment and technology developed in Canada. In addition, Canada offered a stable political climate and one we knew. Further, we felt the Canadian Government's future role in the industry would, on balance, be benign, partly because the Canadian content of the mining industry was very high in contrast to the petroleum industry. Granted, we could find cheaper sources of copper; however, to do so would involve venturing into regions where country risks were higher.

SHARPNESS of separation and washing efficiency are often confused. The sharpness index indicates the precision of a washing unit; the washing efficiency takes into account not only the unit's precision but also the washability characteristics of raw coal and the near-gravity materials at the effective density of cut. A sound basis for evaluating the sharpness index is essential in comparing the sharpness of separation attained by different cleaning units. Sharpness Index and Related Criteria: Washing plant sharpness of separation has been well represented by Hancock's efficiency chart and Tromp's curve of migrated materials. Some useful coefficients derived from Tromp's curve—the error area, probable error, and imperfection value—have been widely used to measure sharpness of separation. These are defined in a number of papers presented at the first and second International Coal Preparation Colsference held in Paris (1950) and Essen (1954).1-5 In evaluating the performance of a dense medium separator at four different gravities, Yan-cey and Greer6 bserved that even with similar operating conditions and the same size grading of feed, the imperfection value of a washing plant varies through a greater range than the probable error. The present writer also observed the same type of anomalies in comparing the imperfection values of one plant which were determined under almost identical conditions. He therefore devised a graphical method to evaluate a washing unit's sharpness of separation and define it by a single coefficient, which is substantially independent of coal characteristics under normal operation of the unit. Unlike imperfection value, the new coefficient can be expressed on a percentage basis. Coal preparation engineers generally agree that the amount of misplaced material resulting from any separation in a washing plant is almost directly related to the amount of +0.10 sp gr (near-gravity) materials. In actual practice, however, misplacement is not restricted to the 20.10 sp gr range. It will be evident from a study of Tromp curves that this misplacement often extends over unequal specific gravity ranges on the two sides of the actual density of separation. The same condition exists for near-gravity ash distribution and the resultant misplacement of ash units during any separation. But so far as the same unit is concerned, the total misplacements bear a definite ratio to the amount of near-gravity zone materials that is affected by misplacements. This ratio should be constant not only for various densities of separation but also for different qualities of feed coal treated in the same plant. This ratio, multiplied by 100, directly represents the inefficiency of the plant. When the plant inefficiency value is subtracted from 100, the re- ' sult is designated as sharpness index. Evaluating the Sharpness Index: The method of evaluating the sharpness index is explained here with reference to Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a reproduction of the familiar diagram used by Cerchar of France to represent the inefficiency of a separation in terms of "triangle of errors," which is a measure of organic loss. PRESENT knowledge of the effects of time and temperature upon stabilization of the austenite-martensite reaction in steel is fairly complete,1-3 but at the time the work described herein was initiated there was no information about the effects of alloy elements on the phenomenon. However, it has been assumed on theoretical grounds that alloy elements, particularly carbide formers, may have a significant effect on stabilization.' The present work was undertaken to provide information about the effect of two common elements, nickel and molybdenum, on stabilization in hypereutectoid and hypoeutectoid steels. Seven induction-furnace melted, 1.2 pct C steels ' with a variation of nickel from 0 to 6 pct and of molybdenum from 0 to 1.0 pct were used for most of the experiments. Along with these a series of 0.4 pct C steels containing 0 to 6 pct Ni were also studied. The chemical compositions of the steels are listed in Table I. Stabilization in these forged, hot-rolled, annealed, and centerless ground steels was measured by aging brine-quenched specimens (aus-tenite temperature, 1800°F) at 95" and 150°F and then determining the change in specific volume produced by subsequent cooling from room temperature to —320°F.³ In presenting the results the decrease in the change in specific volume, ?V, after various stabilization times is used. This is given by ?V -= ?VO - ?V1 where AVO is the change in specific volume on quenching directly to —320°F and aV, is the change in specific volume on quenching to —320°F after stabilizing for time t. In other words, ?V is a direct measure of the amount of martensite that is lost to the subzero quench as a result of stabilization and hence is greater, the longer the aging time or the higher the aging temperature. The results are shown in Fig. 1. The scatter of the data, which are not shown for clarity and brevity, was sufficient to make the relative location of the curves on the ?V axis inaccurate within ±2x10-5 cc per g. However, some generalities appear which are of interest. Effect of Nickel In the 0.4 pct C steels, up to 3 pct Ni has little, if any, effect on the rate or amount of austenite stabilized at 95°F, Fig. la. Increasing nickel from 3 to 6 pct almost doubles the amount of austenite stabilized in a given time. In the 1.2 pct C steels aged at 95°F, increasing the nickel from 1 to 3 pct appears to decrease the amount of stabilization, and a further increase to 6 pct Ni completely eliminates stabilization as shown in Fig. lb (M, of 6 pct Ni steel was below room temperature). The same behavior was exhibited by these steels stabilized at 1500°F, especially after aging for periods longer than 5 hr, Fig. lc. Thus it appears that up to 1 pct Ni has little effect on stabilization at low or high carbon levels. More than 1 pct Ni increases stabilization at low carbon contents and decreases it at high carbon contents. Ward, Jepson, and Rait5 have found that at inter-

SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.

On July 27, 1919, there passed away a simple, unassuming gentle-man, who, throughout his life, allowed his intense modesty to keep him-self in the background and during his later years effaced himself so thoroughly that but few of his acquaintances knew aught of him. Yet he was one of our accomplished metallurgists, who did good work in the practice of his profession and lived an upright life. Now that he is no longer with us Franz Fohr cannot plead to be overlooked, and those who fondly remember him will be gratified by his receiving his due. Franz Fohr was born, Sept. 7, 1838, in Mannheim, Germany. Of his ancestry, education, and early career we know scarcely anything. We do not even know just when he came to America, or. what led him hither. The first record of his professional work in this country, found among his papers, shows that from July, 1870, to Jan. 1, 1872, he was superin-tendent of the Newark Smelting & Refining Works, then owned by Ed-ward Balbach & Son. At that time the Balbach works at Newark, established in 1850, and the Selby works at San Francisco, established about 1866, were the only important silver-lead refineries in the United States. Mr. Fohr may have been associated with the Balbachs for some time before he became superintendent of their plant or he may have come from Germany but a short time previously. At all events, it is certain that he was at that time an experienced and accomplished metallurgist. After leaving Newark and going to San Francisco, he soon formed a connection with Thomas H. Selby & Co. Early in 1874-this firm sent him to New York to procure information respecting the manufacture of white lead. His engagement in New York terminated on-Jan. 31, 1875. During 1875, Mr Fohr spent some time at Silver Islet and in the Lake Superior copper region, but of his work there no record remains. In the latter part of 1875, or early in 1876, he associated himself as metallur-gist with the Boston Silver Co., operating at Saint John's, Summit County, in which William L. Candler, of Boston, was the moving spirit. That company was developing its mine in 1875. At the end of that year it "had about 800 tons of ore on hand, about three-fourths of which is dress-ing ore, to be concentrated in its very systematic establishment and to be smelted into pig lead." Evidently Mr. Fohr was engaged for the latter purpose. Henry A. Vezin, erudite and painstaking, was the mechanical engineer for the company. In the fall of 1876, Anton Eilers took his family for the first time so far West as Denver and Mr. Fohr went with them. I do not think that Mr. Eilers had any connection with the Boston Silver Co., save possibly in a consulting capacity, but he visited Saint John's and the enduring friendship among Eilers, Fohr, and Vezin, which terminated only with their deaths, dated from that time.
