A recent paper by Adams and vreeland30 describes dislocation density changes in zinc as a function of shear strain. The dislocation density was determined with the aid of an etching technique previously described by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland.31 However, comparison of dislocation densities obtained by electron microscopy and this etching technique are not in good agreement, as will be shown below. During the latter part of the Civil War an income tax was placed upon coal and the production of coal in the various collection districts during the life of this tax is shown in the tabulation that follows. The counties that include coal deposits are shown for each district. No record exists now of the production by counties, but it is calculated here on the basis of tax collected. The table, of course, does not include any territory not under the control of the northern armies, and not all of that in some cases.

Discovery of the Delbridge massive sulfide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage halo as a lithochemical pathfinder to blind ore. Its location, relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy was also a factor. Systematic sampling of microfractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulfide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 110-m (360-ft) level.

INDIVIDUALS and small companies have discovered and brought into production the mining districts of the United States. Hardly an exception comes to mind, save for the disseminated copper properties and the great iron mines. In spite of this fine record that has made possible the industrial greatness of the country, mining by small companies and by individuals has become a vanishing phenomenon. In Nevada, the lair of rugged individualism, there are fewer operating mines and fewer miners than at any time since the 1860's. The situation in other states is nearly as desperate.

Ocean engineers and technologists will assemble in Houston, Texas, during May 3-6, 1976, for the Eighth Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) . More than 50,000 members of industry, government, and academia from 94 nations will participate in what is generally acknowledged as the offshore industry's show-of-shows. A well-diversified 280-paper technical program has been divided into 42 general sessions that range from seafloor surveying and offshore mining to navigation systems and environmental issues. In addition, the largest technical- educational exhibition in the conference's eight-year history will augment the OTC '76 program.

Stripping of the Exotica open-pit mine, which is proceeding at about 120,000 tpd, is dwarfed by its proximity to the 500-million-ton Chuquicamata tailing pile. The excavating work is being carried on smoothly and efficiently and, as of the end of October, accounts for the removal of 77 million tons of total material of which some 200,000 tons is stockpiled ore. Diamond drilling has outlined an orebody 5900 ft long and 3400 ft wide containing an estimated 153 million tons of ore at 1.35% recoverable copper based on 80 % extraction.

High grade manganese ores are utilized in metallurgical, chemical, and battery industries, whereas the low grade ores are not accepted for these purposes and hence get accumulated at the minehead. In the present study an attempt was made to solubilize the manganese value as its sulfate by roasting the low grade ore with a suitable sulfatizing agent followed by water leaching. The different parameters were determined in the laboratory scale. Based on these, kilogram scale experiments were conducted where an appreciable amount of manganese goes into solution during leaching.

This paper describe; open pit studies where blasting damage introduced in the remaining rock has been investigated. Results from two open pit mines are described and discussed. Parallel performed laboratory experiments, where simulated blasting damage has been introduced into samples before shear strength testing took place, are also reviewed. These studies are tied together in order to throw some light upon how the blasting damage influences the slope stability. A mathematical model is also described which will make it possible to optimize the blast design for a specified damage zone in the rock mass.

A sample of garnet from the scheelite ore body on King Island, Tasmania, Australia, was upgraded and ground to produce an ultrafine portion suitable for micro-electrophoresis. X-ray and chemical analysis identified the garnet as andradite with some admixed grossular. At neutral pH the garnet particles were negatively charged, their zeta potential becoming rapidly more negative with increasing pH. An iso-electric point was found at pH 3.5. The effects on the zeta-potential of various electrolytes, hydrolyzable metal ions, and flotation collectors were also studied.

The White River Shale Project has completed a 5,000-foot production decline and a 30-foot diameter 1,010-foot deep shaft into its oil shale orebody in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah. This is the first major underground access into these Green River deposits in this basin and provides an opportunity to establish and monitor in-situ rock mechanics stations as input to the mine engineering and planning of this large opening, high-tonnage mine. THE first trial of longhole drilling of raises began in June 1949 at the Holden mine, Chelan Div., Howe Sound Co. The cost of this raise was about the same as the average cost of raising by normal methods which was sufficiently encouraging to give the method further trial. At Holden, the Noranda method of blasthole drilling is used except that percussion drills have replaced diamond drills for making blastholes in all but certain special situations. Two thirds of these holes are between 40 and 70 ft long.

The question of' providing training for miners in the United States has been answered by Public Law 95-164, which stipulates not only that the mine operator will provide training, but generally how much and what material will be covered. At an operation employing 500 miners, the eight-hour refresher training requirement will necessitate an annual investment of over two man-years in labor, a figure that does not include the time spent in training new hires and job transfers. Such an investment can and should be cost effective, while catering to miners' needs.

Abstract-The Bureau of Mines has pursued a program of research on mine illumination that has defined the coal miner's illumination needs. St. Joe Minerals Corporation, recognizing the need for improving the illumination of the working places in their mines, entered into a cooperative research agreement with the Bureau of Mines to utilize the Bureau's expertise in this field. Some similarity in the environment, in which coal and hard rock miners work, has allowed the application of developed coal mine illumination technology and equipment to be utilized in hard rock, room and pillar mines.
