The Institute of Metals Division and the American Foundrymen's Association will meet in Philadelphia Sept. 29 to Oct. 4. Many things of interest to the members of the Institute have been constructed and developed in the Philadelphia district since the last meeting in that city (1907), including the great plant at Hog Island, the new foundries at the League Island Navy Yard and the great foundries of the Westing-house Company at Essington. Invitations are being extended to foundrymen and industrial engineers generally in. England, France, Belgium, Italy, and other European countries, South American countries and Australia, to attend this convention, since the time. seems unusually opportune for holding a meeting of international scope.

SIR HENRY CORT HAROLD CARPENTER, great-great-grandson of Henry Cort, famous as the initiator of iron puddling some 150 years ago, carries on the tradition of an illustrious name. Newest of those elected to the Institute's roster of Honorary Members, Sir Harold is distinguished for his achievements in the field of metallurgy as an investigator, teacher, administrator, organizer, and director of research. His interests in research have been in both the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. His name is particularly honored in its association with the establishment of fundamental con¬stants and of critical ranges of iron and iron alloys, and with original and fundamental studies of the preparation and properties of metal single crystals.

BOB VAN PELTS boyhood days in the mining atmosphere of Colorado apparently influenced him to direct hip college education first towards geology, at. Cornell College, then to mining at Michigan College of Mines and finally to graduate work in geology at the University of Chicago. He taught geology at his alma mater. Cornell College. served as geologist for the National Park Service then was on the staff of the Illinois Geological Surrey investigating and mapping mineral resources, and in 1928 because chief of the department of geology, mining, and metallurgy in the newly organized Rosenwald Industrial Museum (now the -Museum of Science and Industry,). He was made assistant director of the Museum in 1931.

ENGINEERING department problems of unravel- ling filing systems of reference data, detail drawings, magazine tear sheets, technical records, manufacturers' catalogs-and coordinating them with the information classification systems employed by the company library and other information services -are being solved in many cases by adopting a basic classification system such as that used by Sweet's Catalog Service and applying its classification and indexing methods to file or bookshelf. By this procedure the engineering department does away with the confusion, duplication, and conflict that exist between personal, department, and company library files. It establishes a pattern for regulating and distributing the potential information that piles up daily in the engineering department basket marked "Incoming."

Drilling in Missouri in 1944 was nearly treble the rate of 1943 because of continued development of the Tarkio pool in Atchison County and the preparation of a pool in Jackson County for a water-injection project. The pipe line from the Prairie Point gas pool in Platte County was in operation throughout the year of 1944, but several of the shallow oil pools in Cass and Jackson Counties were off production during much of 1944 because of a shortage of help. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 41,475 .ft., of which 21,187 ft. was by rotary tools and 20,268 ft. by cable tools.

The sum of $250 was appropriated to the Chicago Section. The President was authorized to appoint five members of the Board of Directors, including himself as Chairman, to discuss with other technical societies the proper organization for handling all matters of joint interest to the profession of engineering as distinct from purely technical activities, and to submit its findings in the form of recommendations to the Board of-Directors. Charles F. Rand was appointed a Trustee of the United Engineering Society to succeed himself. John H. Janeway was elected a member of the Library Board, vice Karl Eilers, resigned. Alexander C. Humphreys was elected a member of the Library Board to succeed himself.

During the four years that Burr A. Robinson has held the position of Assistant Secretary of the Institute he has not only won the regard and admiration of the Directors and his associates at headquarters because of his unselfish devotion, efficiency and painstaking application, but lie has formed a wide circle of friends among the members of the Institute. All will learn with regret that he has voluntarily severed his connection with the Institute in order to take a position with the United States Rubber Co., which offered such flattering prospects for the future that the Board of Directors, in spite of their disinclination to lose his services, did not feel justified in urging him to decline.

On account of the possibility of isolating carbides in steel it is generally assumed that the electrode potential of iron carbide is more noble than that of ferrite.1,2,3,4,5 Differences from 0.032 V1 to 0.4 V4 have been recorded. However, it is important to realize that the more noble behavior of cementite in relation to ferrite is not an issue of thermodynamics but of reaction kinetics. Theoretically, cementite is less noble than ferrite, which is a direct consequence of its thermo-dynamic instability. The Board of Directors, at its meeting on March 22, 1918, extended an invitation to the American .Institute of Metals to become the Institute of Metals Division of-the American Institute of Mining Engineers in accordance with the terms of By-Law VII. This invitation was presented to the membership of the American Institute of Metals for letter ballot, and, at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers on April 26 191 ,it-was reported that the replies had been in favor of accepting the invitation. Slag and matte, in lead and copper smelting, are, for convenience of removal, tapped into pots of small capacity, usually of paraboloid form, of cast-iron, weighing 275 to 300 pounds, and holding the same weight of slag. As in many smelting districts one ton of ore makes a ton and a quarter of slag, a large number of pots is needed to equip an ordinary plant. Inland Gas Co.. Ashland. Kv. producers, 220 oil wells, and 227 dry holes. The total number was 95 more than in 1940. No new important oil or gas pools were discovered. Abstract-Changes in the pore structure of hematite pellets during reduction to iron were investigated under a variety of experimental conditions. Pore structures were determined by a mercury penetration technique. The reduction temperature was found to be the major influence on structure, the pore system being bimodal below 750°C and unimodal above 900°C. Pore sizes ranging from 0.04 to 20 [um] were observed in completely metallized pellets produced over the temperature range 650-1050°C. Gas composition and reduction rates also influenced the pore structure of the metallized pellets, although to a lesser extent than the reduction temperature. An apparent activation energy of 24 kcal/mole was derived for the pore formation ptocess.

Discussion of the paper of M. E. Lormbardi,. presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 209 to 215. I. N. KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-Some years ago I made a swinging spider to carry a string of casing in a way somewhat similar to that described in this paper. The ground I tried it in was too soft for its successful operation. The spider had a central one-flange bushing to carry the slips. Under this flange and on top of the spider was a properly protected ball runway, or ball bearing, which permitted rotating the casing when it was in place and supported by the slips.

AIME is closing the books on its first 100 years. In the next year the meetings and many papers will doubtless be filled with statistics on the growth of AIME, and, incidentally, on the mining industry. Let's try to keep our cool and avoid breaking our arms patting ourselves on the back. AIME, nationally and locally, runs on the drive and dynamism of a rather small number of its members. If you look at the annual SME Blue Book of national officers and committee members, you will be struck by the repetition of the same names throughout. Trend for a few men to shoulder the burdens and responsibilities can be seen on the local level, too.
