Members of the Institute who were present at the Amenia, N. Y., meeting, in October, 1877, will remember their visit to the hematite mines, just west of the village of Amenia, and some of them may perhaps recall the deposit of carbonate ore south of the opening made for the hematite. The smelting of this carbonate during the last few months, has produced an iron that seems worthy of being brought to your notice. A little more than a year ago, at the Wassaie Furnace, Dutchess County, N. Y., we made a few hundred tons of iron from a mixture of two-thirds ram carbonate and one-third Chateaugay ore, hoping that it would be suitable for steel purposes, but as the iron showed phosphorus 0.189 per cent., it, was not offered. This iron looked well and seemed quite strong, and gave good results in malleable castings; but no special tests of strength were made. About February 1st, of this year, we began using two-thirds roasted carbonate, and one-third Chateaugay, and noticing that the iron mas stronger than usual, we had two samples tested, which showed tensile strength of 32,014 and 34,176 pounds per square inch. After our stock of Chateaugay ore was exhausted, me put on one-third ram carbonate with the two-thirds of roasted carbonate, and the first test made of the iron, showed 40,008 pounds per square inch. The three tests given above were made by Mr. A. J. Copp and Mr. E. B. Manning, of the Phoenix Furnace, Millerton, N. Y., on a machine of Riehle Bros., Philadelphia. Since these tests were made, they have broken samples made with all carbonate ore as follows: 39,669, 40,816, 41,882, 42,281, 39,902, and 40,130 pounds per square inch. A test taken from the same bed of iron as the last-mentioned (40,130), was broken by Mr. A. Blass, at Irondale Furnace, showing 40,151 pounds per square inch. A sample broken on the Riehle Bros. machine, at Stevens Institute, under direction of Professor R. H. Thurston, showed 40,000 pounds per square inch. Another sample was broken by Professor Thurston on his torsion machine, and gave torsion 7", and tensile strength of 44,500 pounds. And

Considering the hazard involved in mining operations, statistics show that a very small percentage of accidents is chargeable to electricity. These accidents do represent quite a large percentage of those that are preventable and they are the direct result of the introduction, for purely economical reasons, of a dangerous element. The introduction of electricity in mines should decrease the hazard, and in no case should electricity be applied to the mechanical operation of equipment if by so doing the dangers incidental to mining are increased. The greater number of accidents are the result of persons coming in contact with exposed conductors at potentials varying from 258 to 508 volts direct current. The use of alternating current at higher potentials than these is quite common in large mines, but it is very rare that an accident happens from this source. This is explained by the fact that where these high voltages are warranted, proper precautions are taken, and the installations are directed by those who fully appreciate the dangers incidental to the work. Direct current is in much more general use than alternating current because of its adaptability to haulage locomotives and the low cost of installation in small operations. We are, however, coming to a more extended application of alternating current for the operation of mechanical devices used in connection with mining. Our underground direct-current wiring system is an evolution from the surface trolley and feeder systems. This is probably due to the fact that our earlier successful applications were electric locomotives, which required the use of a trolley wire. The trolley current has been almost banished from industrial establishments on the surface because of the hazard involved, yet we use it indiscriminately underground, where the dangers from accidental contact or fire are infinitely greater., This does not mean that the underground trolley systems should be eliminated, but it does imply the proper safeguarding of such equipment as is necessarily a part of the trolley systems. It is a fact that the men now employed in the installation and maintenance of mining equipment may be in many cases incompetent or not thoroughly familiar with the work, but they are the men who must do the work and, in order to do it properly, it is necessary that they be educated

THE importance of having perfectly pure metals has led me to present to the Institute a record of some of the trials that have been made to obtain these metals, and also to show one of the largest specimens of extremely thin metal plate which has ever been made. The malleability of metals varies generally directly with their purity, and hence it is only with very pure metals that thin sheets can be obtained. The competition among different manufacturers has been so great at times as to lead to expensive and apparently useless experiments in obtaining in the first instance very thin sheets, and afterwards very large and thin sheets of metal, apparently with no other purpose than that of being able to say that they had produced the thinnest or the largest thin sheet that had ever been made. These experiments were at first confined exclusively to iron, their object being to show the great dexterity of manipulation, as well as the purity of the metal manufactured. They have since been extended to almost all metals by electrical action, and have gone far beyond the limits of what was possible with purely mechanical means. The processes which have been used are rolling or hammering, electrical deposition in a vacuum, and lastly, electrical deposition on plates, easily soluble in acids. The first and last of these methods have been known and practiced for a very long time, having been used to make thin sheets of almost all the metals. The other is of quite recent application. In the iron manufacture, the strife to produce these thin sheets was commenced in the year 1865, by the Sligo Iron Works writing to a firm in Birmingham, England, on a sheet of iron containing 270 square centimeters, and weighing only 4.469 grams. For some time this was considered to be the thinnest sheet iron that could be made. T. W. Booker & Co., of Cardiff, England, however, produced a few months afterward, a sheet of the same size, weighing only 4.015 grams. This was succeeded by one rolled by Neville and Everitt, of Llannelly, weighing only 3.174 grams. This was followed by one from Hallam, of Swansea, which was 283 square centimeters in size, and weighed but 2.979 grams; and this by one rolled by R. Wil-

There was considerable prospecting for new supplies of oil in Arkansas during the past year, regardless of the overproduction affecting the industry throughout the country. Justification for this new work was not lacking, as the local markets more than threatened to absorb a declining production. There were, however, no important new discoveries in the state during 1929. The McDonald area in sec. 2515, S.-18 W., threatened to expand into a major producing area. Oil showings had been encountered here in wells drilled by the McDonald Oil Corpn. as early as the fall of 1928. In July, 1929, an initial production of 1000 bbl. of 32" oil was obtained in McDonald Bros. B-3 Wilson, from a sand at 2780 to 2786 ft., which is about 80 ft. higher than the sand previously tested in the neighboring wells. This production declined rapidly. At the end of the year there were six producers making about 200 bbl. per day total. Seven dry holes have temporarily stopped development in that area. The showing of B-3 was sufficient to cause considerable leasing activity. The area lies several miles west of the Louann portion of the Smackover field. The discovery well went to 2873 ft. and found Glen Rose lime in bottom. The age of the producing sand is in doubt; it seems closely related to the Tokio sand. During 1929, several paying wells were brought in, as a northeastern extension to the Smackover Heavy area, in sec. 34 and 35-15-15, from the Nacatoch sand. Over 20 new wells were drilled and resulted in at least 1500 bbl. production. The down-dip or off-structure territory contiguous to the Smackover uplift was further tested at various locations with the usual results; that is, a showing of "salt water gas," which soon blew off and in some cases a slight showing of oil. These gas showings, found further down the dip than oil, are the results of the ability of water to take gas into solution at the rate of about 3 per cent. by volume at atmospheric pressure and proportionally larger quantities, if available, at higher pressures (measured on the absolute scale). The National Research Council was organized in 1916 at the request of the President by the National Academy of Sciences, under its congressional charter, as a measure of national preparedness. The work accomplished by the council in organizing research and in securing cooperation of military and civilian agencies in the solution of military problems demonstrates its capacity for larger service. The National Academy of Sciences is therefore requested to perpetuate the National Research Council, the duties of which shall he as follows: 1. In general, to stimulate research in the mathematical, physical, and biological sciences, and in the application of these sciences to engineering, agriculture, medicine, and other useful arts, with the object of increasing knowledge, of strengthening the national defense, and of contributing in other ways to the public welfare. 2. To survey the larger possibilities of science, to formulate comprehensive projects of research, and to develop effective means of utilizing the scientific and technical resources of the country for dealing with these projects. 3. To promote cooperation in research, at horse and abroad, in order to secure concentration of effort, minimize duplication, and stimulate progress; but in all cooperative undertakings to give encouragement to individual initiative as fundamentally important to the advancement of science. 4. To serve as a means of bringing American and foreign investigators into active cooperation with the scientific and technical services of the War and Navy Departments and with those of the civil branches of the Government. 5. To direct the attention of scientific and technical investigators to the present importance of military and industrial problems in connection with the war, and to aid in the solution of these problems by organizing specific researches. 6. To gather and collate scientific and technical information, at home and abroad, in cooperation with governmental and other agencies, and to render such information available to duly accredited persons. Effective prosecution of the council's work requires the cordial collaboration of the scientific and technical branches of the Government, both military and civil. To this end representatives of the Government, upon the nomination of the National Academy of Sciences, will he designated by the President as members of the council, as heretofore, and the heads of the departments immediately concerned will continue to cooperate in every way that may be required. The outstanding features in Pennsylvania and New York during the past year were the buying of acreage for water-flooding in other Pennsylyania fields than the Bradford and Allegany districts, the wide adoption and use of the five-spot plan of development and water-flooding in the Bradford and Allegany districts, the discovery of gas production in the Onondaga lime in southwestern New York and the opening of the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. Fifth Sand pool in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Water-flooding has occurred in many other fields than the Bradford, Pa., and Allegany, N. Y., fields. In some the flood was a natural encroachment of edge water, in others the water was introduced into the productive sand through wells either accidentally or intentionally. Most of these floods have not been commercially successful. There has been some interest aroused in the Clarendon field, Warren County, Pennsylvania, by a new and apparently successful flood and other floods have been begun. Five-spotting in the Bradford and Allegany fields is the plan of water-flood development under which the area to be drilled is laid off in a grid of equal-sized squares with water intakes located at each corner of the squares and oil wells located in the centers of the squares. So far there are two five-spot water floods that are, beyond doubt,, commercial successes. There were 600 acres under five-spot flooding at the end of 1928, as against 150 at the end of 1927. By the end of 1929 there will be a total of between 1200 and 1500 acres five-spotted unless a low market for Pennsylvania grade crude oil develops. An increase of 6000 bbl. in average daily production is expected to accompany this development in 1929. The Belmont-Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. found the Onondaga lime or a higher strata at 3995 ft. north of Bolivar, Cattaraugus Country, N. Y., and a number of miles from any other important gas production. When drilled to 4006 ft. the well yielded 3,500,000 cu. ft. of gas and when shut in 1700 Ib. rock pressure. IT IS universal practice for corporations, at the end of the fiscal period, to call in a firm of chartered accountants to audit the books. The effect of this is to put an independent organization's seal of approval on the accounting of the business done by the management. Their report lets the stockholders know that the accounts rendered truly present the results of the year's business. This is as it should be; the average stockholder has no personal contact or even acquaintance with the managers of his enterprise and the approval of their stewardship by an indepen-dent agent is very desirable for maintaining confidence in their honesty and ability. But such an examination deals only with what may be called the arithmetic of the business; even the most elaborate audit, as the practice is at present, goes no further than to verify the items of the inventory. In other words, while checking up the entries showing the transaction's of the year and certifying to the correct-ness of the items of the balance sheet, such a report gives the stockholder no idea of the ability with which his affairs have been managed. If the profit and loss balance is satisfactory, as certified by the public accountants, he assumes that the management has been able; where it is not, he turns to the president's report and usually finds an explanation. Such an explanation never takes the form of admission of mis-takes in business judgment or of bad technical manage-ment. It could hardly be expected that it would. The stockholder is generally furnished, therefore, with a certificate of the honesty of his management, but never one of its ability. He does not worry about the latter as long as dividends come in; when they cease, his action generally finds expression in replacing the management. In other words, so long as profits are realized, he assumes the management to be good, even though its success is a matter beyond its control and better management would make larger profits. When there is no profit, the stockholders have no means of knowing whether it is due to conditions beyond the control of the management, as the annual report is sure to allege, or whether, by better management, profit is possible. Here is where the technical audit comes in.

In order to secure good results in the prevention of accidents, it is generally recognized that the desire for such accomplishment, as well as the aggressive and constructive action to achieve it, must emanate from the Top Management and permeate successively down through the "Chart of Authority" to the workmen. Several years ago, with the above as a basis and with full support of the Top Management, the Mining Department started a program of selling the foremen and bosses the idea that safety could be achieved and that it was desired and required. Using psychology, persistence and numerous other methods, the foremen and bosses were finally impressed with the idea that "It can be done" and "It will be done." With this in mind, new ideas were brought forth by the foremen and bosses regarding the caving operation and the specific jobs in the operation. These new ideas were taken up in round-table discussions and resulted in certain changes in the undercutting method and the actual drawing of the blocks. These changes resulted in increasing fragmentation of the blocks which prevented the usual hang-up areas in the blocks. With the rock smaller in size and within reasonable reach from the tapping drifts, accidents were prevented in the tapping section. At the same time, an enforced campaign of housekeeping throughout the mine was undertaken with very beneficial results. The foremen and bosses then, in turn, educated and trained the workers themselves to become safety conscious. In so doing, a constant reminder was given on all jobs assigned that the job was to be done safely as well as efficiently. No man is assigned a job who is not qualified for the type of work required. Efficiency and safety go hand in hand. Safety Rules To supplement and aid this safety conscious attitude, certain safety rules applicable to our operation, a modified block caving system of mining limestone, in addition to the established state regulations, were put into effect and enforced. The specific rules referred to above and which will be mentioned below are in most cases simply a means of applying and complying with the very adequate "Mine Safety Orders" issued by the Industrial Accident Commission of the State of California. The figures listed in a table for Gulf Coast fields given by L. P. Teas1 in 1934 are so greatly at variance with results that I have obtained from a serious study of this subject over a number of years, that I am disposed to challenge the correctness of Mr. Teas' figures as an accurate representation of acre-foot yields of Gulf Coast fields, and as regards at least two of the fields listed by Mr. Teas I desire to "put into the record" some figures that, according to my study, are more nearly in accord with what I conceive to be the actual facts. Upon investigation I find that Mr. Teas' figures, inadvertently no doubt, arc not what they purport to be. Apparently the figures were arrived at by considering as thickness of the producing formation the net thickness of producing rock corresponding "to the total of the net portions of the producing zones which actually yield oil into the drill hole"—and in following this method I am under the impression that Mr. Teas was acting under instructions of the Institute in the preparation of this paper, in order to get comparable figures from the several fields of the United States. Apparently the author interpreted these instructions to mean that in the absence of cored thicknesses of producing horizons the actual number of feet of screen set in the various producing zones was to be taken as the basis for arriving at the thickness of these zones and the "acre-foot" yields. It is obvious that in many instances only 20 ft. of screen, or even 10 ft. of screen, might be set in a well, when there might be actually 100 ft. of oil sand present. In the early operations in the Gulf Coast it was usual to set much less screen than the amount of sand. It follows that the "acre-foot yields" so arrived at would be much greater than those found by using the full amount of sand. In Mr. Teas' table, it was indicated that up to the end of 1933 "acre-foot" yields had been obtained in the several fields as listed in Table 1. It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals—petroleum included—is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates are not only never intended as a final word but must continually be subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding of what is meant by reserves and that the figures can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, further, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. Such a survey presupposes further a clear distinction between the known amount of oil underground in proven fields at any one time, and the proven reserves: the portion that can be economically brought to the surface and made available for utilization. Only a fraction of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields— usually associated with natural gas—is or can be economically brought to the surface, and not all of the oik brought to the surface is economically utilized; also, although practically all the natural gas can be economically recovered and utilized, in actual practice a large part of the total volume that reaches the mouth of the well is wantonly blown into the air and wasted. It is thus estimated that in the United States only some 25 per cent of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields is actually brought to the surface; and in actual practice close to 25 per cent of the total gas produced is now absolutely wasted. Statistical data on the Polish producing business are available only for the first half of 1939. Because of the invasion of the country during September by Germany and Russia all sources of information have stopped, and it is impossible to get even an approximate picture of the status of the industry after that date. The long declining trend of Polish production, which was finally checked during 1938, kept a further upward tendency during the first half of 1939, and there is good reason to believe that the upward trend would have been maintained. It is true, there was little hope of reviving the slowly dying Boryslaw field, although there still remained a slight possibility for an extension in its southwestern direction. Repressuring plans were still discussed, but. could not be put into effect because of extremely complicated and split-up lease ownership. The Gorlice-Lipinki ficld continued to be the main factor in the increase of the country's production. During the first half of 1939 this field received a further important extension in a southern direction. The Schodnica field continued to use repressuring with success. At the end of June, 21 exploratory wells were drilling, 14 of which were within thc Carpathians and 7 in the Miocene geosyncline of the Carpathian Foreland. All of the wildcat wells drilled within the Carpathians were on the struct,ural cxtcnsion of old established fields, but part of the wildcats of the Foreland were on new geological and geophysical prospects. The Opary gas field of the Foreland discovered last year has been further developed. The Government-owned Polmin completed its third gasser. This well penetrated two sands; the upper one, 118 ft. thick, was found at 1312 ft., with an initial pressure of 570 lb. and capable of produeiring 10 million cu. ft. per day. The second sand, 91 ft. thick, was found at 1690 ft., yielding 20 million cu. ft., with a pressure of 760 lb. The well Mieczyslaw, drilled about 3 miles further north on the flank of the structurc, found the first sand watered. The Pioneer No. 5, at Chodonice near Przemysl, which reported somc gas last year, was 5696 ft. deep at the end of June, still drilling in Miocene. Anothe well in the same vicinity drilled by the Gasolina was 1708ft. deep.

In an earlier paper1, the author described a method of interpreting earth-resistivity curves, based on the theoretical investigation of a single horizontal underlying stratum. If the four-electrode system of Wenner is employed, the resistivity in a homogeneous soil is given by the formula where a is the electrode separation and R is the resistance of the earth between the two inner electrodes. If the earth is not perfectly homogeneous, the application of this formula gives an apparent specific resistance varying with the electrode separation. In the special case of the single horizontal underlying stratum, there is a surface layer of thickness h and resistivity p1 and a lower layer, extending to infinity, of resistivity pz. It has been shown by Lancaster-Jones2 that the apparent resistivity obtained by an application of equation 1 is related to the true resistivities, the depth h and the electrode separation a by an expression of the formhere pa is the apparent resistivity and F is a function (actually an infinite series), of the ratio h/a, and a reflection coefficient k = (p2 — p1)/(p2 + p1). For given values of h/a and k, the right-hand side of equation 2 can be calculated, and curves drawn showing the relationship between pa/p1, h/a and k. Such a set of curves for the case when p1 > p2 is given in Fig. 1. When pl is less than pz it is more convenient to use conductivity instead of resistivity. Hence, if oa = the apparent conductivity = lip, and a1 = the conductivity of the upper layer = l/pl, it follows that GeophyGical prospecting by earth-resistivity methods is frequently applied to investigation of structural problems in geology. Fig. 1 indicates a scheme of the general arrangement used in these methods of measurements. The battery (or generator) E is connected with two "current electrodes" I1 and I2. The current of intensity J, supplied by this battery, passes through the earth between these elcc- trodes. A potential difference U will be measured between two other electrodes V1 and Vz, called "potential electrodes." THE "slot" system of mining in use at the Golden Queen mine, Mojave, Calif., does not involve any new mining methods. It is, how-ever, a, new combination and adaptation of several stoping systems in common practice. The first plans for stoping operations at the Golden Queen mine called for ordinary shrinkage stopes. The hanging wall of the vein, where exposed, is a very hard felsite with a dip varying from 50° to 70°. The vein itself is quartz, shattered and fractured enough to make it easy to drill and blast to a clean hanging wall. There is no well defined footwall. The footwall limits had to be determined by assays as the metal content faded out into the felsite. Two shrinkage stopes, each approximately 200 ft. long, were laid out and started on the 200-ft. level. One of these stopes, varying in width from 8 to 18 ft., was carried on up to the top limits of the ore, approxi-mately 120 ft., without a break in the operation. The shrinkage system proved entirely satisfactory and low costs resulted from-this operation. In the final drawing of this stope, two timbermen followed down on the ore, scaling the hanging wall clean of small fragments and placing an occasional long stull from foot to hanging wall where it was deemed necessary. Few such stulls; however, were required. The hanging wall stood up very well until the stope was entirely emptied of ore. Waste fill was then put into the stope by the glory-hole method, through a waste raise that had previously been run to surface from the middle of the stope. The second shrinkage stope ran into difficulties about 35 ft. above the sill floor. Up to this point the maximum width of the ore had been about 15 ft. The ore suddenly widened into the footwall to a distance of 40 ft. in the north end of the stope. In extending the stoping operations over this width, it was soon found that the vein material would not arch and support itself. Drilling in this end of the stope was then entirely too hazardous, and all operations were stopped. Since 1911, when J. L. Dunn first used compressed air for repressuring depleted oil sands in southeast Ohio, the rejuvenation of many depleted oil fields has been directly due to repressuring by means of air or gas. Developments in repressuring in recent years have resulted in its successful use in the early life of some deep, high-pressure oil fields, conserving the natural gas dissolved in and associated with the oil by returning it to the producing oil sand after it has been compressed above the existing rock pressure of the reservoir. One of the most successful operations of this type is that of the Humble Oil & Refining Co., on the DeWalt salt dome at Sugarland, Texas. I quote from a personal communication with reference to this field: "Structurally, the field is dome-shaped, having a closure of approximately 350 ft. Production comes from a sandy shale interbedded with a clean sand and lying over a cap rock which is about 3400 ft. deep on top of the structure." A feature of the operation of this field is the production of the required amount of oil with the minimum of gas production. Wells on top of the dome have high gas-oil ratios, while those down structure have lower ratios, depending upon the distance of the well from the peak. To date, it has been possible to produce the oil needed from the wells circling the dome above the water zone and below the gas zone, and in this manner the average gas-oil ratio has been kept low. The gas from all separators is turned into a gas system which serves the entire field. From this system, all drilling rigs and utilities requiring gas for a fuel draw their requirements, and the remainder of the gas (about two-thirds of the production) is delivered to a compressor plant which boosts the pressure until it can be returned to the sand at the top of the dome where the rock pressure is 1400 lb, per square inch. "The Sugarland wells produce through 2-in. tubing with a 3/8-in. choke in one wing of the well-head manifold. The pressure builds up as high as 1300 lb, per square inch on the casing while on the tubing it varies from 0 to 900 lb. per square inch, depending upon the amount of gas produced with the oil."

ALL of our accounts of the discovery of copper ore at Ducktown, Tenn., state that the discovery was made in August, 1843, yet it would appear that samples of copper from this district were found by the Spanish explorer, DeSoto, when he wandered into Southern Tennessee, in 1539, in his four years of exploration through the Southern States. The following quotation is taken from his diary: "Towards the north there was a province named Chisca; and that there was a melting of copper, and of another metall of the same colour, save that it was finer, and of a farre more perfect colour, and farre better to the sight, and that they used it not so much, because it was softer. And the selfe same thing was told the governor in Cutifa-Chiqui, where we saw some little hatchets of copper, which were said to have a mixture of gold. But in that part of the country it was not well peopled; and they said there were mountains, which the horses could not passe; and for that cause, the governor would not goe from Cutifa-Chiqui directly quicker." DeSoto sent two of his company to try to find these mines, but after five days' wandering through the mountains they returned, stating that their guides had become lost. Although the Ducktown area may have been known to the ancient Indians, it was not until August, 1843, when a Mr. Lemmons, who was panning for gold on Potato Creek, in the Ducktown basin, found some reddish-brown decomposed rock, which he supposed to be gold, that the copper deposits were actually discovered. His disgust on finding that this yellow metal. was not gold was so great that he did not. try to develop his find. In March, 1847, B. C. Dugger erected an iron forge at this same place, but was unable to work the iron as it contained so much copper that on cooling it would break to pieces. The finding of copper in the iron ore by Mr. Dugger led to further explorations; and in April, of the same year, A. J. Weaver, who was passing through that country, told the people that the black rocks they had dug out were rich copper ore. Mr. Weaver began the first mining in this district.

The figures listed in a table for Gulf Coast fields given by L. P. Teas1 in 1934 are so greatly at variance with results that I have obtained from a serious study of this subject over a number of years, that I am disposed to challenge the correctness of Mr. Teas' figures as an accurate representation of acre-foot yields of Gulf Coast fields, and as regards at least two of the fields listed by Mr. Teas I desire to "put into the record" some figures that, according to my study, are more nearly in accord with what I conceive to be the actual facts. Upon investigation I find that Mr. Teas' figures, inadvertently no doubt, arc not what they purport to be. Apparently the figures were arrived at by considering as thickness of the producing formation the net thickness of producing rock corresponding "to the total of the net portions of the producing zones which actually yield oil into the drill hole"—and in following this method I am under the impression that Mr. Teas was acting under instructions of the Institute in the preparation of this paper, in order to get comparable figures from the several fields of the United States. Apparently the author interpreted these instructions to mean that in the absence of cored thicknesses of producing horizons the actual number of feet of screen set in the various producing zones was to be taken as the basis for arriving at the thickness of these zones and the "acre-foot" yields. It is obvious that in many instances only 20 ft. of screen, or even 10 ft. of screen, might be set in a well, when there might be actually 100 ft. of oil sand present. In the early operations in the Gulf Coast it was usual to set much less screen than the amount of sand. It follows that the "acre-foot yields" so arrived at would be much greater than those found by using the full amount of sand. In Mr. Teas' table, it was indicated that up to the end of 1933 "acre-foot" yields had been obtained in the several fields as listed in Table 1. THE existence of mechanical twins in bcc metals has long been known. With recent intensive interest in the mechanism of twin formation and its role in plasticity and crack initiation, a study of the general Characteristics of twin intersection appears pertinent. The scope of the present note will be limited to the crystallography of the twin intersections of (112) twins, without consideration of its mechanism, movement of atoms, crystal structure, or the strain energy involved at such an intersection. The twinning elements of (112) twins are considered to be K1 = {112}, n1 = (111) and K2 = {112}, n2 = (111) with a twin shear of 0.707. The crystallographic features of twin intersections have been worked out in detail by Cahn.1 The present work applies the general principles postulated by Cahn to the intersections of (112) twins. The basic conditions for the twin intersection are: 1) The trace of crossing (A) and the secondary (C) twins in the planes of the crossed twin (B) must be parallel. 2) The direction (n1) and magnitude (s) of shear must be identical in the crossing and secondary twins. Also the sense of shear must be the same. These two conditions have to be fulfilled in order to maintain geometrical continuity at the twin interfaces. Fig. 1 shows the perspective representation of how these two conditions are fulfilled at the intersection. This type of intersection will be named Type-I. It is the purpose of this note to point out the existence of another type of intersection, Type-II, as shown in Fig. 2. In this type of intersection, the crossing twin A remains straight and the crossed twin B has been bent. The two conditions laid down by Cahn must also be met. This leads to the following corollary conditions: 1) The interface between twins B and C must be parallel to the twin habit of crossing twin A. 2) n1c must be parallel to n1A. 3) The twin shear (s) of twin C must be exactly equal to and in the same sense as that of crossing twin A. Thus, in order for the Type-II intersection to take place, the twining elements of secondary twin C must fulfill the above three conditions with respect to crossing twin A. It is no longer necessary to explain to an audience like this that there are stainless or non-corrosive steels. It is still necessary to repeat, and to keep on repeating, that no one of them is stainless or non-corrosive under any and all conditions. We do not make railroad axles, springs and rails from the same kinds of steel; nor are shafts, steering-arms, gears and cap-screws made from the same type analysis. By analogy with other fields of endeavor, therefore, it is logical to expect that all the myriad conditions of corrosion due to inorganic and organic acids and salts and their mixtures in all degrees of concentration and at a wide variety of temperatures and pressures will require different materials to withstand them. Possibly stainless steel when first introduced a decade ago was expected to do too much, or suffered from overenthusiasm and lack of positive knowledge and experience on the part of its producers. Its name may have been a bit misleading too, for remarkable as this product is, it has its limitations. There are now so many different ferrous products available and calling for recognition, that we may be justified in an attempt at classification. The first division is very simple. 1. Non-corrosive steels that harden by quenching. 2. Non-corrosive steels which do not harden by quenching. We might make the classification still simpler by saying (1) those that harden by quenching, and (2) those that soften by quenching. Of course there is a border line or fringe of compositions which may possess some of both qualities under limited conditions of treatment. I have seen a steel so perfectly balanced on this border line that in its natural condition, as rolled, the outside of a 1-in. bar was soft and the inside hard, and there was quite a sharp line of demarcation in between. The hardness at the center was more than twice as great as at the surface, as measured by the Rockwell test. This border line of products does not include, however, the commercial products now available to solve the problems of industry. Phosphorus is essential to all life processes and therefore to the existence of man. In this role, there are no substitutes for phosphorus. In a commercial sense, phosphorus and its compounds are important to our entire economy, both in agricultural and in nonagricultural applications. The world's phosphate requirements are met by mining phosphate rock. Two general types of phosphate ore deposits are commercially important-igneous and sedimentary. Igneous deposits generally are more difficult and more expensive to mine than sedimentary deposits and are of importance mainly in the USSR, North Vietnam, and South Africa. Approximately 15% of current world production comes from these deposits. Over 80% of world production is from the pellet sedimentary deposits of Florida, North Africa, and elsewhere. Guano, the second type of sedimentary deposit, is produced in South America but is declining in world importance. Production Production of phosphate rock was reported in 31 countries during 1972. However, about 80% of world output is produced in three countries: the United States, the USSR, and Morocco (Table 15.2A.1). Throughout the past 20 years, between 75% and 80% of world output has been produced by these three leading countries. Between 1948 and 1972 world production increased at an average rate of 10% per year, from 21.5 to 103.9 million tons. Growth was quite steady at 6% per year through 1963, but in the 5 years from 1963 to 1968 production increased 11 1/2% per year. Since 1968 production has increased about 91/2 % annually. Since 1948 several new phosphate mining ventures have been developed in Senegal, Togo, Israel, and North Vietnam. In the same period, only one important phosphate deposit, on Makatea Island, has been mined out and closed. A number of other phosphate mining ventures are in various stages of planning and development. The most important new venture in phosphate mining is in the Spanish Sahara. New mining capacity is expected also in Syria, and serious investigation is in progress in Peru, India, Turkey, and Australia. Major expansion of existing operations is expected in Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Israel, and Jordan. Consumption Historical data on world consumption of phosphate rock are not available in detail, but world consumption of phosphate has closely paralleled world production in the past two decades.
