An improved technique has been developed for the deoxidation of palladium with aluminum which is especially suitable for use in making small castings with an induction-melting and casting machine. The effect of various crucible linings on the efficiency of the residual deoxidizer and accompanying oxide film in protecting palladium against oxidation during remelting also has been examined; the preferred crucible lining consists of zirconia cement. THE objective of this work was to develop a simple method of deoxidizing induction-melted palladium which would be suitable for use by manufacturers of jewelry and other small castings. In a common method of deoxidizing torch-melted palladium a piece of aluminum foil is dropped on the surface of the molten metal. If a film is present, which is usually the case, it must first be removed by oxidizing the molten metal thoroughly because it would interfere with the entry of the aluminum into the melt. Removal of the film is probably facilitated by a mild fluxing action of the silica crucibles which are used for torch-melting. However, removal of an alumina film from molten palladium in the crucibles normally used for induction melting is a much slower process and it became necessary to modify the de-oxidation procedure. In the modified procedure the charge is simply melted and the desired amount of aluminum, crimped to one end of a tungsten wire, is plunged through the film into the palladium and the wire immediately withdrawn. The trace of tungsten which dissolves along with the aluminum can be avoided, if considered objectionable, by using a palladium wire. In view of the persistence of the alumina film under the conditions of induction-melting it also was decided to ascertain the efficiency of this film in protecting palladium against oxidation during repeated remelting and casting. Melting Equipment and Materials The equipment used for melting and casting consisted of an Ecco GC:6, 6 to 8-kva high-frequency converter and an Ecco M34B centrifugal casting machine. This unit is being increasingly used for making jewelry and dental castings and it also has been found useful in making exploratory melts of a variety of nickel alloys, for which purpose it is well suited on account of its speed of melting and economy of material. A description of the machine and its operation will be published elsewhere.' A common palladium jewelry alloy, 95.5 palladi-um-4.5 ruthenium (referred to as "palladium" in the trade), was selected for the deoxidation tests. It was available as melting stock which had been melted in air to free it from oxidizable impurities, and also as clean scrap from previous melts which had been deoxidized with aluminum. The latter was thought to be typical of clean "palladium" scrap to be found in a manufacturing jeweler's establishment and it is also similar to one brand of "casting palladium." By the same token, the oxidized melting stock corresponds to "casting palladium" after the latter has been melted and thoroughly oxidized: Pure aluminum wire (99.9 pet), 0.032 in. diam; 1 in. = 0.036 g. Scrap tungsten wire, 0.014 to 0.020 in. diam. Argon, commercial water-pumped; 99.9 pet pure Experimental Procedure Samples of about 50 to 75 g of the palladium alloy were melted in a crucible lined with a proprietary refractory alumina cement. Some charges were melted in air, others in argon. The oxidized melting stock was melted and solidified a number of times in order to remove as much oxygen as possible before deoxidizing, but this treatment was unnecessary in the case of scrap. The proration of oil produced in the field frequently is based partially or entirely upon the gas-oil ratio of wells. The measurement of the gas-oil ratio is one of the more important field tests in regulatory and pro-ration work, and the test always should be conducted according to standardized methods and procedure. Obviously, the gas-oil ratio and the volume of gas produced by a well depend upon many factors but should be independent of the method of measurement and of the devices used to measure gas and oil. Consequently, the volume of gas accompanying a barrel of oil produced by a well may be measured by any reliable and accurate device or instrument. Frequently either a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is used for this purpose, and for a particular well the same rate of flow of gas should be obtained regardless of whether a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is employed in the test. In Texas, when using either instrument, either Capacity Table 1 or 5' is employed in making the necessary computations. If the tables are used, a discrepancy always is found whenever the two instruments are compared by extrapolation to the same conditions of flow. Clearly, Tables 1 and 5 must be at fault in some respects. The orifice well tester and the Bureau of Mines type of critical flow prover are essentially the same instrument; both devices utilize a square-edged orifice 1/8 in. in di-ameter as the primary element, and both freely discharge gas to the atmosphere. Tables for the orifice well tester' have been published in the ranges of 0 to 15 in, of water and 0 to 40 in. of mercury (Hg) differential in pressure. Coefficients for the critical flow prover have been published for differentials in pressure greater than 75 psia. An extrapolation of either differs from the other set of data as much as 18 per cent at some points. No immediately obvious reasons for the discrepancy was found, and data available from the literature were insufficient to effect reconciliation. Consequently, a series of experiments was performed to check the available data and to determine discharge coefficients for the two devices in an overlapping range of differential pressure. The correlating equation used in preparation of tables such as Tables 1 and 5' is the so-called hydraulic equation, Q = C1 vh .....(1) The tables cover orifice sizes from 1/8 through 1 1/4 in. A second set of tables, for use with greater differentials in pressure, apply only to the 3/4, 1, and 1 1/4-in. orifice plates over a pressure range of 0 to 40 in. of Hg. The correlating equation used in preparation of the tables is Q = C2 vH(29.32 + 0.3H)/G . (2) Each of these equations is valid only for the range to which it has been applied, and neither equation is valid for extrapolation. Theoretical equations for flow through an orifice are based upon assumptions of fractionless flow and an emergent jet the size of the orifice. A multiplier, C,, called the discharge coefficient, is inserted into the theoretical expression to compensate for both frictional losses and the contraction of the jet experienced in the plane of the orifice. Buckingham3 shows that C, should vary with the ratio of upstream to downstream pressure for flow of a compressible fluid at any average linear velocity through the orifice less than the velocity of sound. Work published by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics4 indicates that the variation continues into the so-called critical flow region until the vena contracta coincides with the plane of the orifice. The NACA work, however, does not indicate a leveling off of the coefficient. The work of the Bureau of Mines5 for the critical flow prover was based on differential pressures greater than 75 psi and indicates that the discharge coefficient, Cd, is constant in this region at a value of about 0.86.

Deep drilling has led to the development of numerous pools which yield products consisting predominantly of natural gas accompanied by high-gravity water-white or slightly straw-colored liquid. Yields of this "condensate" or "distillate," as it is commonly called, vary from traces to over a hundred barrels per million cubic feet of gas. The fact that this liquid exists in the reservoir as an integral part of the gas phase and is formed by condensation attending simultaneous reduction of pressure and temperature after its entry into the well was apparently first recognized about 1932.l The nature of the physical phenomena involved in this condensation was clarified for the petroleum industry in 1933 by a report by Sage, Schaafsma, and Lacey2 of the results of an experimental investigation of the behavior of mixtures of methane and propane. Search of the literature has revealed that the condensation of liquid from gaseous mixtures by isothermal pressure reduction is not a new discovery. Kuenen was led by theoretical considerations to expect such a phenomenon, and in 1892 reported3 the results of experimental verification of his deductions. This was followed by a considerable amount of work on the phase relations of mixtures by Kuenen 4,5,6 and by 0thers,7,8 mostly in European universities. Since 1930 investigators in this country have reported experimental data on the properties and behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems."' It is now generally known that in the presence of natural gas the solubility in the gas phase of the heavier and normally liquid hydrocarbons increases rapidly with increasing pressure above 500 to 1000 Ib. per sq. in. Thus, at pressures of 2500 Ib. per sq. in. or higher a gas may contain appreciable quantities of hydrocarbons with normal boiling points as high as 6o0°F., which in turn may be condensed from the gas phase by the reduction of their solubility therein attending pressure reduc-tion. The combined effects of pressure and temperature on condensation and vaporiza-tioi of mixtures are most readily visualized by the study of phase diagrams. Since the construction, application, and interpreta-tion of such diagrams have been described fully in readily available literature, 18-20 this paper will not review the theoretical aspects of this subject. While the behavior of gas-distillate sys tems is now clearly understood, at least in a qualitative way, most of the published work deals with the results of laboratory studies of binary systems or of synthetic mixtures of hydrocarbons, and although several systematic investigations of the effects of separator pressure and temperature on the yields of liquid product from gas-distillate wells have been made21,12z it appears that in all cases the limitations have precluded the construction of even approximately complete phase diagrams for naturally occurring systems. WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well.

The thermodynamic properties of the Pb-Ag system have been determined between 775° and 950°C by the cell: Electrotransport measurements on silica-saturated PbO-SiO2 melts established that the conduction was entirely ionic and that lead is present only in the divalent state. The activities of lead and silver exhibit Positive deviations from ideal behavior. In dilute solutions the activities of lead and silver follow Henry's law. The values obtained for yhb and yig at 1200°K are 1.49 and 1.69, respectively. Determination of a portion of the liquidus curve agrees well with the established phase diagram. provides an accurate means for the thermodynamic study of liquid alloy systems. However, Wagner and wernerl have shown that cells of type I are limited to alloy systems for which the reaction at the alloy-electrolyte interface will be extremely small. The traditional electrolyte for cells of type I has been a low melting point mixture of group IA chlorides, to which a small amount of the compound ACIZa has been added. However, the choice of a chloride electrolyte may not always be practical, in that the Gibbs free energies of formation of the compounds ACIZ, and BCIZb may not be sufficiently different to minimize Reaction [I]. On the other hand, the Gibbs free energies of formation of the oxides of metals A and B may be sufficiently different to minimize Reaction [I]. In this case, the use of molten oxide electrolyte would be clearly advantageous. In the present study, the thermodynamic properties of the Pb-Ag system have been investigated using the cell: Previous galvanic cell studies on the Pb-Ag system2'= are not reliable due to the displacement reaction between the alloys and the chloride electrolyte. Wagner and ~erner,' using Laitinen and Liu's' value at 450°C for the standard electrode potential of Reaction 111, have estimated the percent error in the activity of lead bPb) when using a chloride electrolyte. At 1000°C the error for xpb = 0.10 is 12 pct. Taking the Gibbs free energies of formation for PbClz and Ag cI,' and the equations of Wagner and Werner,' the error in apb at 1000°C and Xpb =0.10 was calculated to be 140 pct. However, using the Gibbs free energies of formation for Pb O' and an estimated value for Ag 20, the error in apb when using a molten oxide electrolyte at 1000°C was estimated to be less than 1 pct for The virtual reaction of cell I1 for the passage of n Faradays of positive electricity from left to right in the cell is: where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), E is the electromotive force of the cell in volts, and n is the number of Faradays of electricity required for the transfer of 1 g-atom of lead through the cell. The value of n should be equal to 2 since lead is generally divalent in oxide melts. However, the presence of either tetravalent lead ions or electronic conductivity through the molten oxide electrolyte will result in a value of n greater than 2. Bockris, Kitchener, and Davies' have determined the amount of ionic conductance in a liquid PbO-SiO2 mixture (xPbO= 0.50) at 920°C by measurement of the volumes of CO and C& evolved at a carbon anode during electrolysis. From their data a value of 2.13 * 0.16 was calculated for n. Although their measurements indicate the possible presence of multivalent lead ions and/or electronic conductivity, their measurements were not at silica saturation and no definite conclusions can be drawn. However, as a result of the electrotransport measurements described in the next section the ;due of n can be taken as equal to 2.

ONE of the properties of copper, which has done much to give it its present prominent place among the useful metals, is its electrical conductivity, a property which has now become the chief criterion of 'the value of the commerical product. In pursuance of that distinctively American principle that, 1' the best is none too good," metal of the highest conductivity is usually called for even where such extreme purity is of no advantage, for instance, in the making of brass and other alloys. The average brass-founder feels nervous unless his copper is so very pure that it shows a conductivity of 99 or 100 per cent., while the character of the zinc used is usually overlooked in his anxiety. Electrolytic refining has made it possible to produce copper of a' very high degree of purity, the metallic impurities averaging but a few thousandths of 1 per cent.; oxygen, usually present in the form of cuprous oxide, bringing the total up to about a tenth of 1 per cent. The published data bearing upon the relationship between chemical purity and electrical conductivity is, however, very scant,' nearly all the work that has been done having dealt with alloys carrying considerable quantities of the foreign elements. In this paper I have brought together the results of experiments extending over a period of several years that have been carried out with the idea of determining the amount of various elements which would lower the conductivity 3 or 4 per cent.-a series of impure coppers rather than alloys. INTRODUCTION. IN considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley's Bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby , saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether, still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained? The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation,. tinder various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out., should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations given below cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast in ,Mr. Gayley's experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion' of Mr. Gayley's paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces.. T HE appointment of Herbert Hoover to the portfolio of Commerce in the President's Cabinet is to engineers the fulfillment of a long deferred hope to have an engineer in high political office and is a matter of congratulation to us for three reasons; because he is a mining engineer who represents the highest type of idealistic engineering effort; because he is a past president of the Institute; and because he has probably a broader grasp of world problems than any other living engineer. Frank A. Vanderlip in the preface to his book "What Happened to Europe" tells of the many interviews he had with the most prominent men in Europe which were made possible for him by his eminence as a banker and by the courtesy of the American ambassadors. He cites by name such well known figures as Austin Chamberlain, Sir Auckland Geddes, Monsieur Delacroix, Monsieur Briand, Mr. Padkrewski, Mr. Venizelos, Colonel House, General Pershing, Mr. Baruch, and many others and says :

COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion-equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control. For the present purpose a number of factors important to efficient heat liberation and recovery have been grouped as follows: 1—combustion, temperatures, and rates of heat liberation; 2—radiation, convection, and furnace and boiler configuration; 3—sponge ash, slag, and hard-bonded deposits; 4— low-temperature deposits and corrosion (cooling flue gas below dew point and air-pollution control); 5—the limitations of coal cleaning and boiler size and cost as related to fuel characteristics; 6—future possibilities and conclusions. The development of combustion apparatus for power boilers is progressing at a lively pace. There has been no letup in improvements in design of pulverized-coal-fired boilers, and there is a strong trend at present toward improving dry-bottom units. Spreader stokers with overfire jets and dust collectors as standard equipment are gaining favor. Less than 10 years in commercial use, cyclone burners are going into numerous installations here' and abroad.' Underfeed and traveling-grate stokers have long since been developed for heavy-duty operation, yet new developments in overfire jets and humidification of air blast have improved their performance. A water-cooled vibrating-grate stoker of German origin is being introduced into the United States and Canada." The primary objectives of an ideal coal combustion device are: capacity to burn the variety and sizes of coals likely to be economically available during the life of the unit; capacity to burn the coals automatically for a wide load range and rapid load fluctuations and to burn the coals completely to CO2, H2O, and SO2, which means without smoke and cinders, or carbon in the refuse; capacity to control and discharge all the ash in final granular form without ash adhesion to walls or tubes, and without flue dust; minimum furnace volume; minimum labor and maintenance; low initial and operating cost. Regardless of the method of burning, the gaseous products of coal combustion are N2, CO2, O2, H20, and SO?. By way of illustration, the coal analyses in Table I is assumed from an installation described by E. McCarthy.' When coal is burned with 20 pct excess air (theoretical air, 9.23 lb per lb of coal), the quantities of combustion gas shown in Table II are produced. In addition, the gases carry particles of fly ash, unconsumed cinders, soot particles, and small but significant amounts of vaporized oxides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, phosghorous, iron, and other metals. In recent years, germanium, one of the rare metals found in coal, has been shown to oxidize and vaporize at combustion temperatures and to be concentrated by reconden-sation at lower temperatures." Pulverized coal and cyclone flames" have peak temperatures of 3000' to 3500°F. Temperatures in fuel beds of large underfeed stokers reach maxima of 3000°F, sufficient to fuse almost any ash and to volatilize some of it. These peak temperatures are above the optimum necessary for rapid combustion, but they hasten heat transfer for ignition as well as boiler heat absorption. Furnace and gas temperatures increase with combustion air preheat. Low excess air has the same effect. Fine coal pulverization and highly turbulent combustion shorten the distance for fuel burnout, increase flame temperature, and speed up heat transfer. Rates of combustion of pulverized coal exceeding 200,000 Btu per cu ft per hr have been demonstrated in atmospheric gas-turbine combusters,

Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

Laboratory data form the basis for the design of flotation circuits. These data, obtained from testing samples of the ore, should show the optimum con- ditions for concentrating the ore and the effects of change in process vari- ables. Among the more important variables commonly met in flotation practice are: Liberation Size-This is the particle size at which substantially all of the valuable minerals are detached from the gangue minerals. Reagent Additions- Experimental data will show the reagents used and their quantity, quality, and point of addition. Pulp Density-This is an important variable in the design of the flotation circuit because it is one of the factors determining the size and number of flotation cells. Flotation Time-The time necessary to make the separation into concentrate and tailing depends on such factors as particle size and reagents used and must be known for determination of the size and number of flotation cells in the plant. Temperature of Pulp-Temperature affects flotation reactions. Water at approximately room temperature is satisfactory for most flotation separations, but some minerals such as fluorspar are best floated in hot water. Type of Circuit-Many types of circuits can be designed, as discussed in detail later. The laboratory tests should provide data for design of the plant circuit best suited to the ore. Water-Knowledge of the quality of the future plant's raw water is important because water quality may drastically affect flotation results. If possible, flotation tests should be made using samples of the water to be used in the plant. Flotation results may vary with seasonal temperatures and with circulation of reclaimed water. Experimentation can show whether it will be necessary to provide for heating, cooling, treating, or reclaiming the water. Uniformity of Ore-The extent of variation of the ore in hardness, grind- ability, mineral content, and floatability should be investigated so that the designer can ascertain methods to overcome problems caused by ore variations. Settling and Filtration Data-To design the plant flotation circuits, settling and filtration rates and ultimate percentage solids of the various products must be determined. Corrosion and Erosion-Corrosion and erosion tests should be made on the flotation pulps, particularly if the pulps are acid or at an elevated temperature, so that suitable materials of construction can then be chosen.

The assay or estimation of the total gold content of an ore presents little difficulty, when circumstances permit of securing a thoroughly representative sample. The general practice has been fairly standardized, and such errors as occur in the results obtained are for the most part attributable to the methods of sampling rather than to those of assaying, while duplicate assays made by skilled workers usually agree closely. When it is a question of estimating the "free" or amalgamable gold of an ore, as opposed to the total gold, there is but little uniformity in the methods employed by different workers, and often equally little in the results obtained when duplicate determinations are attempted, no satisfactory standard method having been generally adopted. The methods in use are of two general types—"panning" and "amalgamation." Panning For the estimation of the value of the visible gold by panning or washing, a weighed sample may be taken, ranging from an ounce to several pounds; a kilogram or 2 lb. is a favorite quantity for laboratory tests, while a prospector often uses a full miners' pan, say nearly 20 lb. or 10 kg. In the case of rich quartz, ground to about 30 or 40 mesh, a Mexican horn is convenient, using 1 to 8 02;. of material, and a 6-in. frying pan is favored by many prospectors in dry districts. Bateas, plaques, and dishes of various patterns are used for the same purpose. With these, fairly close results may be obtained by using for ocular comparison standards consisting of weighed amounts of gold of similar character as regards purity, fineness of division, and the general shape of the particles, which standards are preferably obtained from gold of the same locality, or the same deposit, as the ore or gravel being tested. Men working in one particular district sometimes become surprisingly expert in thus judging the value of an ore by the eye, the weights of both ore and gold being guessed. On the other hand, many have been led to overestimate the value of ore and gravel from unfamiliar localities, where the gold has been very finely divided or of unusually high silver content, and a novice may

Bellis and Hardy was interesting to me and has led me to make a few remarks concerning some of the points brought out. The question of employing correct hardening temperatures is one that is sadly neglected, particularly in many large plants that forge and treat their machine tools for private use. As is most aptly remarked in this paper, "The custom of using one, high-speed temperature for all tools is very poor practice;" still, such practice is more common than otherwise. An instance came to my attention some time ago, in connection with some work with the standardization of high-speed steels for machine tools, where there were no less than six different brands of alloy steels being used for machine tools such as lathe, shaper, planer, boring mill and cutters of like nature. All of these different steels received identical heat and forging treatment-or at least that was the aim of the tool hardener. That the results were highly unsatisfactory goes without saying. That the hardening department of many plants is conducted on a rule-of-thumb fashion is the reason for a great deal of the trouble and disappointment which seems to be the lot of many tool-steel users. Exceedingly crude execution is the rule rather than the exception, and it is no small wonder that the results are as good as they sometimes happen to be. It would seem that at the present price of alloy steels the subject should receive a closer scrutiny by purchasers than it does. One not familiar with the workings of souse plants that disdain to lend an ear to scientific heat treatment would scarcely give credence to some of the methods employed, not only in the treatment of the steel but also in its selection and purchase. Heating for hardening should be conducted under close pyrometric control only after the correct hardening temperature has been determined.

THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

A recently developed system for measuring electrical resistivity of liquids without use of electrodes offers some interesting possibilities in electric logging technology. The equipment as supplied by the manufacturer is satisfactory for continuous mud logging on a drilling rig or for measuring mud or filtrate resistivity in the laboratory. A simple modification of the commercially available instrument makes it suitable for measuring resistivity of core samples in the laboratory. The continuous measurement of mud resistivity on a drilling rig is a convenient means for detecting mixing of formation water with the drilling mud. Such information is useful to the geologist, the mud engineer and the logging engineer. However, continuous mud resistivity logging by conventional electrode-type resistivity cells is beset with difficulties. The mud, sand and rock chips abrade the electrodes, thereby changing the cell constant and eventually destroying the cell. Also, additives and crude oil in the mud may poison the electrodes by coating them with a nonconductive material. An electrode-type resistivity cell. therefore, may give erroneous readings under certain conditions. Electric logging companies circumvent the electrode poisoning problem by using a four-electrode resistivity cell for measurement of mud resistivity. In this cell, change in electrode area does not change the cell constant. However, the four-electrode cell is difficult to adapt for continuous reading and does not solve completely the problem of electrode abrasion by the sand and cuttings in the mud. The measurement of electric logging parameters on core samples in the laboratory encounters some of the same problems discussed in connection with mud logging. Ideally, the electrical resistivity of a core sample should be measured by placing platinum black electrodes in direct contact with the plane ends of a cylindrical or rectangular sample. Platinum black electrodes however, are much too fragile and easily abraded to be brought in contact with a rock sample. Also, oil or other constituents in the fluid contained in the sample will poison platinum black. In practice, gold-plated brass electrodes, in an AC bridge circuit operating at about 1,000 cps, are used for routine core analysis. For more precise work in research studies, a four-electrode scheme is used.',' Preparation of the samples for the four-electrode method is much too involved for routine core analysis. An apparatus for measuring resistivity of liquids without use of electrodes was described by Guthrie and Boys3 in 1879. They suspended a beaker, containing the electrolyte, by a torsion wire and rotated a set of permanent bar magnets around the vessel. The eddy currents induced in the electrolyte reacted against the rotating magnetic field to develop a torque, which was measured as a deflection of the torsion wire. In 1879 this method could not be made precise or convenient because of the lack of strong permanent magnets. The writer described a very greatly improved apparatus similar to that of Guthrie and Boys, but it was not suitable for continuous measurements or core samples.' Many electrodeless resistivity devices using radio frequency current are described in the literature.5, 6 These generally are suitable only for noting the end-point in a chemical titration. They do not measure resistivity, instead measuring a complex quantity which includes the dielectric constant and the magnetic permeability. The first description of the apparatus to be discussed in this paper was given by Relis.7 Improvements and modifications are described by Fielden,s Gupta and Hills,> and Eichholz and Bettens.10 DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is based on the principle that the solution under measurement can form a loop coupling two transformer coils, as shown in Fig. 1. For a fixed AC voltage applied across Coil A, the voltage appearing across Coil B is a function of the resistance of the liquid-filled loop. The details of the voltage generating and measuring circuits are given in Refs. 7, 8, 9 and 10. A block diagram of the equipment is given in Fig. 7. Special features worth mentioning are the operating frequency of 18,000 cps and the automatic temperature compensation which results in the given resistivity readings being automatically correlated to 25°C. The liquid loop supplied by the manufacturer, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, was modified for use in core analysis (Fig. 3). The core sample under test is substituted for a section of the original loop. As shown in Fig. 3, the unit accepts only plastic-mounted cylindrical core specimens. A Hassler-type sleeve easily can be designed for the unit if unmounted cores are to be measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE MUD LOGGING A simulated mud line was set up in the laboratory.

IT has been ascertained in recent years that certain rocktypes, geological formations and structural conditions may be used as fairly reliable guides, when prospecting in recognized mineral belts or mining districts, with a reasonable certainty of discovering "pay-ore;" and that such is considered as a practically established conclusion may be inferred from a perusal of the recent reports of the U. S. Geological Survey and the literature of the several scientific societies discussing minim, geology, and kindred subjects. Cripple Creek is no exception to this conclusion, and the rock-type or association, rather than the structural condition, is the most infallible guide.† These guides consist of four, possibly five, dike-rocks, three of which are extremely basic, while the fourth is an acid rock of an entirely dissimilar character. The basic rocks are nepheline-basalt, limburgite, feldspar-basalt and tephrite. There are grounds, however, for believing that the two latter are subdivisions of one type, and therefore will be described under one head. The acid rock is quartz-porphyry. Nepheline-basalt is-a rock encountered in but few localities elsewhere on this continent, and occurs in narrow dikes cutting various formations. When typical‡ it is composed of

The nitrogen contents of seven specimens of iron and steel were determined by the three methods. Good agreement won generally observed between the results of the isotope -dilution and Kjeldahl determinations, tltzts establishing the reliability of the isotope -dilutzon technique. For some specimens, the vacuum-fusion values at 1650 °C were lower than the corresponding Kjeldahl values by up to 0.0015 pct absolute. These differences were eliminated for a specimen of "pure" iron by performing the vacuum-fusion analyses at 2100 ° to 2240 °C. The reason for this relatively high temperature required m the vaczium-fusion analyses is discussed. ThE determination of nitrogen in iron and steel has been the subject of numerous investigations and a concise review of the extensive literature in this field has recently appeared.' Two methods of analysis are most commonly employed, the vacuum -fusion and the chemical or Kjeldahl method. Except in special cases where the presence of certain alloying elements may present difficulties, both methods are generally regarded as applicable, although the vacuum-fusion method is more sensitive and is often preferred for samples of very low-nitrogen content. The method of isotope dilution, first employed for the determination of gases in metals by Kirshenbaum and Grosse,2 has recently been applied to the determination of nitrogen in iron and steel.3,4 The method is attractive in that it does not require the quantitative extraction of gas from the metal specimen. Staley and Svec3 modified the standard Kjeldahlpro-cedure by introducing, along with the steel sample, a measured amount of ammonium sulfate enriched in the isotope 15N. The nitrogen content was obtained by measuring the isotopic ratio 15N/14N in the resultant solution. The technique involved the distillation of nitrogen as ammonia from alkaline solution and subsequent oxidation of NH4+ in the distillate to gaseous nitrogen. The results for iron and steel samples of commercial origin were often in reasonable agreement with values quoted by the suppliers, although occasional marked discrepancies were observed, particularly with the results of vacuum-fusion analyses. Preliminary work in this laboratory4 on the determination of nitrogen by isotope-dilution in the gas phase yielded results for three samples which were significantly higher than the values obtained by vacuum-fusion. The present paper describes an extension of this work to a wider variety of samples. Analytical results by the Kjeldahl method are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL The technique employed for the isotope-dilution determinations was similar to that described elsewhere.4 Several minor modifications were made to the apparatus. These included the use of molybdenum instead of platinum-rhodium suspending wires when crucibles were degassed at temperatures above 1600°C. The circulatory system used previously for converting CO to CO2 was replaced by a single chamber, the walls of which were cooled directly in liquid nitrogen. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which had been recently calibrated and, as in the previous study, were minimum values obtained by sighting on the center bottom of the crucible. Temperatures obtained by sighting on the interior walls were always higher by 100' to 130°C with the design of crucible employed. Flat-bottomed crucibles exhibited an even larger temperature difference. To check the efficiency with which crucibles were degassed in the isotope-dilution apparatus, several experiments were done in the vacuum-fusion apparatus, suitably modified4 for isotope-dilution studies. Faster pumping speeds and higher degassing temperatures were possible, the latter due to the use of a generator with a higher power output (10 Kva at 398 kc per sec). In these experiments the combustion of CO was omitted and a correction4 was made for the contribution of CO to the ion current at m/e 28, used in determining the isotopic ratio R = l5NP4N. Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (') The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. The figures on 00.1 are "etch hillocks", rather than pits, and according to Honess(6), this phenomenon
