UNDER present economic conditions the necessity of mechanizing the mines of our country has become a very important problem. More and more mines are looking toward increased or complete mechanization of their operations, so in the writer's opinion it is quite pertinent that some of the associated problems that accompany such a program be pointed out. The following generalization on attempting a comparatively slight change in mining methods at the Southeast Missouri properties of the St. Joseph Lead Co. is an attempt to point out to anyone faced with a mechanization program that much time and C. Any changes in mining methods, machinery, and so on, must entah coordination of all the other phases of mining as they all have to mesh as accurately as a smooth running chain of gears if satisfactory results are to be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the problems which :have to be surmounted when any mechanization program is attempted, rather than to go into the mechanical details and actual operating data of the equipment employed. After all, machines have to be adapted to best suit the local conditions, so no general formula can be given that would apply to other properties. Although St. Josepll Lead Co. has been mechani-cally-minded for a number of years, as shown by the fact that over 110 million tons have been loaded mechanically since 1922, any further mechanization or changes always present a problem. When our ore bodies were of great height and area the breaking and loading were developed to a high degree of efficiency according to known standards. But in recent years, when our ore bodies became smaller and more scattered, the amount of tonnage we were able to break was not sufficient to supply our shovels with enough rock to keep them working to capacity. Our first step in attempting to rectify this situation was to develop a technique of moving the shovels to the broken ore in various stopes, which sometimes entailed a move each shift. A shovel is not producing when being moved, so within the last two years we have been endeavoring to devise some means of getting more rock broken in these smaller stopes and it was then that we became interested in jumbo drilling. To illustrate the fact that mechanization is a process of a chain of developments rather than a stroke of genius can best be shown by a general summary of conditions and obstacles which were encountered in our present attempt to establish template drilling of a standardized round. Our first jumbo was more or less the conventional type with two machines mounted on a crossbar. This arrangement proved to be impractical to duplicate satisfactorily the regular routine of slabbing in a more or less radial pattern as carried out by column drilling. One machine was either too close to or too far from the face and there was another disadvantage in that one drillman was frequently delayed while waiting for his partner to bottom a hole. Our next step was to eliminate the crossbar so the machines could operate independently of each other, but we still encountered the same objections mentioned above except that one drillman was free to drill three holes instead of one in a vertical plane independently of his partner. Time studies while trying to adapt the jumbo to the regular slabbing practice as accomplished by column drilling, revealed that twice as much time was spent in maneuvering the jumbo into position and aligning the holes as was consumed in drilling.

[Two of the most useful and important equations available to the metallurgist for the study of plastic deformation of metals are the Huber-von Mises-Hencky1-3 and the St. Venant7-10 equations. HUBER-VON MISES-HENCKY EQUATION The Huber-von Mises-Hencky equation answers the question: When does plastic flow occur in metal that is subjected to a multi-axial stress? It occurs, according to this equation, when the three principal stresses,? al, a2, and a3 satisfy the equation: (s1 - s2)2 + (s 2 - s 3)2 + (s 1 ? s3)2 = 2K2 [I] Here K is the yield strength of the material as determined in an ordinary tensile test. If the quantities a1, a2, and a3 are assigned to the coordinates of a Cartesian three-dimensional system, this expression describes a cylinder whose axis of symmetry is inclined at equal angles to the three coordinate axes4,5 (Fig. I). The radius of this cylinder is v2/3K. For the purpose of simplicity, it is sometimes advantageous to ascribe the values s 1/K = si, s 2/K = s2, s 2/K = s3 to the three coordinate axes instead of the principal stress alone. In this case, Eq. I becomes (s1 - S2)2 + (S2 - S3)2 + (Sl - S3)2 = 2 [2] and the radius of the cylinder becomes 2/3v. In the latter method of representation, a point lying inside the cylinder indicates that the metal will react elastically, whereas a point lying on the cylindrical surface indicates that the metal will behave plastically. Some of the geometric features of this cylinder are worthy of study. Let us inquire first as to what interpretation may be placed upon what we will choose to call the "circles of latitude" of the cylinder (L in Fig. I) and the "meridians" of the cylinder (M in Fig. I). Circles of Latitude Circles of latitude are formed by allowing a plane, passing perpendicular to the cylinder axis, to intersect with the cylinder. Any point, P, on this circle is presumed to have the coordinates s1, s2, and s3. The coordinates of the point resulting from the intersection of the plane and the cylinder axis will be a, a, and a (since the cylinder axis is equally inclined to the three coordi¬nate axes). Let us now pass a line through the point on the circle and the point on the axis.]

IN order to understand more fully the complexities of the reactions occurring between the liquid steel and the slag in the basic open-hearth steelmaking furnace, investigations in this country and abroad have turned to laboratory equilibrium studies. This paper is one of a series of reports on investigations being conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The experimental work was completed early in 1942. The slag systems found in the basic open hearth are very complex, being made up of at least eight major components and as many others whose effect might be classified as minor. The first two papers of the series, by Fetters and Chipman,l,2 as well as the paper by Taylor and Chipman,3 dealt with the simplest possible slag system that would resemble those found in the basic open hearth-the slag system consisting of CaO-MgO-SiO2-FeO. (Taylor's rotating induction furnace eliminated the necessity of contamination of the slag by MgO.) Having arrived at some reasonable conclusions regarding the physical chemistry of the reactions between molten iron and the simple slags at equilibrium, the next step was to investigate more complex slag systems. The major purpose of the present investigation was to determine what factors control the distribution of phosphorus between molten iron and the more complex basic slags at equilibrium, and to what extent these factors are influential. The slags used contained CaO, MgO, Si02, FeO, Fe203, P205, MnO, A1203 and CaF2, but not all of the slag samples contained all of these components at one time. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Brings4' von Samson-Himmelstjerna,5 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. THE subject of blast-furnace slag is one which has had much consideration, particularly from the scientific standpoint, and several years ago technical literature contained many learned discussions on the oxygen-ratio of the acids and the bases, all on the assumption that acids and bases must be present in a ratio depending on molecular weight and chemical valency. Much work has also been done, sometimes in conjunction with the former, on the total heat and the temperature of initial fusion or softening of various slags. A wider knowledge of the blast-furnace now enables us to say that for practical purposes this work has been of almost no value. It is now generally admitted that on the physical side the important point of a given slag is neither its total heat of fusion nor its softening-point, but its free-running temperature, since this is the critical temperature of the furnace. This temperature bears no definite relation to the softening-temperature, as determined by Seger cones, for instance, because some slags melt relatively like ice, with a very short viscous-range, while others melt relatively like tar, with a very long viscous-range. In one the difference between the softening- and the free-running temperature may be very small, as little as 100° F., while in another this difference may easily be 200° or 300°. The importance of this difference is so great in practice as to destroy completely the value of exhaustive investigations, even such as those of 0. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

Thermomechanical treatments applied to the maraging steels include a) cold working in the austenitic condition at 650°F, followed by transformation to martensite and aging, b) cold working in the murtensitic condition and aging, and c) cold working in the aged condition with and without subsequent reaging. The strength increases in these steels are very small compared to the increases observed in conventional carbon and alloy steels. The changes that are observed are compatible with the strengthening mechanisms operative during thermomechanical treatment of conventional steels, however. Differences are caused by the absence of a carbide precipitate and the low work-hardening rate in both the solution-treated and the aged conditions. ThE 18 pct Ni maraging steels represent a class of steels which are finding great interest for high-strength applications.1~2 They are essentially carbon-free, and contain 7 to 9 pct Co, 3 to 5 pct Mo, and 0.2 to 0.8 pct Ti. Although austenitic at elevated temperatures, they can be air-cooled to room temperature to form a martensite, which because of the absence of carbon is relatively soft. On subsequent reheating age hardening occurs and strength levels of 250 to 300 ksi yield strength can be attained. These steels appear to be particularly suitable for studying the response to various thermome-chanical treatments for additional reasons other than the obvious one of attempting to improve their already attractive properties. Thermomechanical treatments can be defined as treatments whereby plastic deformation, generally below the recrystal-lization temperature, is introduced into the heat-treatment cycle of a steel in order to improve the properties. With an absence of intermediate transformation products on air cooling the maraging steels have good hardenability and hence can readily be cold-worked in the austenitic condition prior to transformation to martensite. Further, they can be worked in the martensitic condition prior to aging, and even can be deformed in the fully aged condition. Finally, it is of interest to compare their re- sponse to that of the more conventional alloy and carbon steels, where the role of carbides is important in the strength increase by thermomechani-cal treatments. The thermomechanical treatment of conventional steels has been the subject of a recent review.' I) MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The steel used in this investigation was a commercially produced vacuum-melt heat, which had been rolled to 0.090 in. and mill-annealed. The composition of the alloy was as follows: 0.02 C, 0.08 Mn, 0.10 Si, 0.009 P, 0.009 S, 18.96 Ni, 7.34 Co, 5.04 Mo, 0.29 Ti, 0.05 Al, 0.004 B, 0.01 Zr, and 0.05 Ca. Unless otherwise stated the heat treatments used were the standai-d solution treatment at 1500°F for 1 hr, air cool, followed by a 900°F, 3 hr age. In this condition, the material exhibited 232 ksi yield strength and 239 ksi tensile strength. Mechanical properties were determined by Vicker's hardness measurement (20 kg) and by tensile tests on standard 1/2-in.-wide, 2-in.-gage-length sheet tensile specimens. Notch tensile tests were run using the 1-in.-wide NASA type, edge-notched specimen.4 Fracture-toughness determinations were made on 3-in.-wide, center-notched, fatigue-cracked specimens, following the recommendations of the ASTM Committee on Fracture-Toughness Testing.4 An electric-potential technique was used for measuring the crack size at the onset of rapid crack propagation5 which is necessary for calculations of Kc, the critical stress-intensity factor under plane-stress conditions. The critical stress-intensity factor under plane-strain conditions KI, was also calculated, using the stress at which the first observable crack growth occurred. 11) RESULTS A) Cold-Worked in the Austenitic Condition. The reported M, temperature for the 18 pct Ni maraging steel is about 310°F.1 Therefore, a temperature of 650°F was selected as suitable for rolling in the austenitic condition. Specimens were solution-treated at 1500°F for 1 hr, air-cooled to 650°F, and rolled varying percentages from 0 to 60 pct, at 20 pct reduction per pass. Tensile and hardness properties after aging at 900°F for 3 hr are shown in Fig. 1. The Batac jig is a newly-designed Baum-type jig for coal washing. Multiple air changes directly under the bed permit uniform distribution of air pulsations, giving greater capacity and more accurate separation than standard Baum jigs. It is equipped with a new concept of air valves, automatically and electrically controlled, permitting infinite variation in jigging pulsations. It can be used for either coarse or fine coal cleaning. Sharp separations and high organic efficiencies are obtained at separation densities above 1.45 specific gravities.

When a blast furnace has a certain defined burden and is operated under fixed conditions of blast temperature, etc., the fuel efficiency is determined by the extent to which the reducing gases can remove oxygen from the burden in the furnace stack. This is determined by two distinct factors: 1) The uniformity of gas-solid contact, and 2) The ease with which oxygen can be removed from individual pieces of burden. This latter is often called burden reducibility. When burdens were poorly prepared the first factor was by far the most important and a study of the reducibility of individual lumps was of rather academic interest. In recent years good burden preparation with emphasis on uniformly sized material has led to greatly improved gas distribution in the stack, and thus the second factor has become much more important and there has been a marked increase in interest in methods of measuring reducibility. This paper explores the Linder method of measuring such reducibility. The measurement of reducibility of burden materials must be carried out under conditions duplicating, as nearly as possible, those of the blast furnace stack. This is very difficult since the blast furnace process is a counter-current one, and thus the initial conditions encountered by the solid (gas temperature, composition, etc.) are the result of heat and mass transfer occurring lower down the stack. Any method of burden testing which does not take this into account is, at least to some extent, based on arbitrary assumptions. In an attempt to study blast furnace reactions under non-arbitrary conditions BISRA adopted the SCICE technique as a method of investigation. This technique has been used with a measure of success.' The SCICE technique, however, was found to be too slow for use as a routine test for burden materials and it was decided to construct additional equipment for burden testing. A test was required which would: 1) Be as realistic as possible. 2) Be quick and easy to operate. 3) Give some indication of the breakdown likely to take place during reduction in addition to a reducibility index. After a critical assessment of the reducibility tests which have been proposed it was decided to adopt the Linder test equipment and procedure as a basis for burden testing. THE LINDER TEST APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus which was constructed (Fig. 1) was the same as that described by Linder2 except for minor changes in design. Linder also laid down a test procedure which he had derived from the results of investigations on Swedish blast furnaces. The variations of temperature and gas composition during the test were defined; these are shown diagram-matically in Fig. 2. BISRA's intention was to use the standard temperature and gas composition programmes for testing a variety of burden materials and also to investigate the influence of different programmes on standard burden materials, making use of information from the SCICE apparatus wherever this is possible. Up to the present, effort has been concentrated on the first part of the programme, and work on the second part has only just commenced. For each test 200 g of coke and 500 g of burden material were used. Linder had recommended that the coke and burden material should be between 1 and 1 1/2 in. and this was adhered to in early experiments on ores and sinters. Since the eventual aim of this work was to relate the test results to blast furnace operation, it was decided to carry out subsequent experiments using burden material in the size range used in the blast furnace, as far as this was possible. If the main interest was, for example, a comparison of the products resulting from different methods of agglomeration, then there would be advantages in using burden materials as close as possible to a standard size. After the charge had been placed in the reaction tube and this had been connected to the gas supply, rotation of the reaction tube at 30 rpm was started and the reduction programme was commenced, the gas temperature and composition being manually controlled according to the programme shown in Fig. 2. After the reduction test the charge was cooled in a nitrogen atmosphere. It was then removed from the reaction tube, the coke and burden separated, and the extent of burden breakdown assessed by screening it at 10 and 30 mesh. The extent of reduction was then

Review of Literature Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Krings,4 von Samson-Himmelstjerna,6 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. In 1861, Kramer deposited iron from ferrous chloride solution. Electrolytic iron was produced in 1869 by Bietz, who used it for making some magnetic tests. In the same year, Klein is. said to have worked out his process. Jacobil in 1869 described the results obtained in electroplating with iron on copper for making dies and plates for bank notes, by Klein's process. A letter from Klein to Jacobi describes the bath more fully. It consisted of FeS04 + (NH4)2SO4. Lenz2 described some properties of electrolytically precipitated iron. He used Klein's bath, FeS0, + MgSO4 + MgCO3, to neutralize and obtained fine-grained and hard iron. His conclusions were as follows: 1. Electrolytic iron and copper contain gases, notably hydrogen. 2. The volume of gas absorbed by iron varies within wide limits, but it is easy for iron to take up very considerable quantities of gas. 3. The absorption of gas is principally in the first formed layers of iron. 4. When iron is heated, gas begins to come off below 100°, principally hydrogen. 5. Heated to redness, reduced iron oxidizes in water, in part at least at the expense of the oxygen of the water, decomposing it and setting free hydrogen, which is partly or wholly absorbed. Siemens,3 in 1889, was the first to propose a general process embodying a step for leaching a sulfide mineral with ferric chloride or sulfate and a step for regenerating the leach and depositing iron on a cathode in a diaphragm cell. CRUSHING of Climax mine-run ore is carried out in two plants: No. 1 plant (flowsheet in Fig. 1) has a capacity of approximately 5000 tons per day. It is used as a stand-by except when maximum production is required. No. 2 plant (Fig. 2) has a top capacity of approximately 17,000 tons per day. The No. 2 crusher is more efficient to operate on reduced tonnages regardless of the wide variation in peak capacities. The system of crushing is similar in both plants: Mine ore, of a size which can be drawn through 48 by 96-in. slusher openings underground, is dumped into the crusher bins from ten-ton mine cars and fed into 48 by 60-in. Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year, 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million of crude and 7 ¼ million tons of concentrate and pellets, which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody, or new orebodies, a particular drill will be most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock property. For the rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes, and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index.

New measurements of graphite and cementite solubilities in ferrite have been obtained to resolve disagreements among previous data. To measure graphite solubility, specimens of iron were equilibrated with rarious carburizing atmospheres at temperatures be-twee~z 480" and 1435°C. The carbon activity of each atmosphere relative to graphite was taken from published data. After quenching from each equilibration treatment the concentration of carbon (typically 10 pprn by wt) was determined from the height of the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum. A few inclividual analyses by combustion support the reszdts of Smith on the solubility of graphite near the eutectoid temperature. Combination of these combustion and internal friction analyses determines In a, (at 0.01 wt pct) = 24,000/RT - 12.72, where a, is the activtity relative to graphite in ferrite at fixed cornposition. The same specimens were used to determine the solubility of self-stressed cementite precipitates. The results indicate solubilities of 6.3, 23.2, and 68 pprn carbon by wt at respectively 400°, 500". and 600°C. The once large discrepancy between the cementite solubility determined by internal frictiori and that calculated from flee energy data has been almost completely resolved. A recent study1 (hereafter designated I) on the solubility of cementite in a iron did not fully resolve the disagreement among previous data. The remaining disagreement is illustrated by the phase diagram in Fig. L The data of I are represented by the line labeled "stress-free" cementite. They determine a heat of solution of cementite of (14.8 * 0.2) kcal per mole which contrasts with the (20 * 1) kcal per mole derived from Smith's graphite solubility2 and the formation energy of cementite.3 Toward resolving this disagreement we have obtained new data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite. METHODS As in I the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum was used to measure the concentration of carbon dissolved in ferrite. This method relies on the relation C=kQ-1 [1] in which C is the concentration of dissolved carbon, Q-I is the Snoek peak height, and k is a proportionality factor which is a function of the peak temperature, polycrystalline texture, and other parameters characteristic of the ferrite lattice. To determine true heats of solution via Eq. [1], it is necessary to establish that k is independent of the temperature from which the specimen is quenched. Some evidence on this point is contained in a separate report.* Additional evidence is shown by the data points in Fig. 1. These represent the Snoek peaks of two specimens carburized to about 10 ppm C, copper plated, and quenched first from 888º then from 588°C. The copper plate was removed before each Snoek peak measurement. These data show that there is no detectable dependence of k on quenching temperature. The solubility of graphite was determined by repeatedly carburizing various specimens of iron wire with gas mixtures of known carbon activity relative to graphite. To cover a wide temperature range within the a phase boundaries it is desirable to use as low a carbon concentration as is compatible with reasonable precision. The determination of manganese by precipitation with potassium chlorate from a solution in concentrated nitric acid, filtration through asbestos, and solution in a reducing agent whose excess is estimated, is open to the objections that the filtration and subsequent solution of the binoxide are apt to be very slow, and that the asbestos may (according to Troilius), unless perfectly purified, affect the titration. In the following modification, filtration is avoided. I give the method as I use it for Bessemer steel. In an 8-ounce Griffen beaker dissolve 1 gramme drillings in 15 c.c. nitric acid (1.2 sp. gr.). Evaporate to 5 c.c.; add 20 c.c. concentrated nitric acid and precipitate with chlorate as usual, avoiding a large excess; then add about 60 c.c. warm water, and 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution; stir until of a clear light yellow color, and titrate with permanganate while the solution is at about 80' C. The binoxide should dissolve immediately when the oxalate isadded. The titration is rapid, and the end-reaction, though transient, easily caught after a little practice. The standard solutions used are: 15 grammes crystallized ammonium oxalate to a liter, and 1.6 grarnmes potassium permanganate to a liter. For standardizing the permanganate, to 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution is added 50 c.c. of hot water, and a solution of 1 gratnme of steel in concentrated nitric acid, from which the manganese has been removed by potassium chlorate and filtration through asbestos.
