Most previous work on sedimentation of coal 1 and mineral 2-3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer," shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-divi-sion line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions. Procedure: The following procedure was used in many tests. A 1.6-gm sample of dry coal was mixed with 16 ml of distilled water in an ordinary test tube and allowed to stand for three days, with occasional shaking to insure thorough wetting of all particles. The slurry was transferred to a Nessler tube and diluted to 32 ml. The pH regulator and flocculating reagent were added, and the slurry was diluted to reach the uppermost or zero-division line. The tube was immediately stoppered and inverted downward and up again ten times during a period of 35 to 40 sec. The lumaline lamp was turned on during the inversion period. After inversion the tube was quickly returned to the viewer rack. The time elapsed for each 10-division drop of the demarcation line between solid and liquid was recorded by stopwatch until the 80-division line was reached in the zone of compression. Additional readings were taken at 15, 30, and 60 min after settling began. The clarity of the supernatent liquid was observed also. As the settling rate became considerably slower at the 75-division line, it was convenient at this time to start the next test in a separate Nessler tube. This was continued until the suspensions in any number of the 21 tubes were tested. An attempt was made to correlate the experimental results between the Nessler tube and a 1-liter glass cylinder. Table I shows that coal particles settle much faster in the cylinder than in the tube, which has a large wall effect.' The correction factor for the tube impedance is 1.662 2 0.145 at the 40-division line in the hindered settling zone, and 1.614 & 0.139 at the 75-division line in the compression zone. This rough correlation was established by dividing the pulp height of each container into 100 divisions and comparing the settling rates of the two containers at the same divisions. Tests were also performed to determine the accuracy of the viewer. The results, not presented, showed that error was within 10 pct.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Complex copper-lead-zinc ore is mined from underground workings high in the Western Cordillera of the Andes mountains about 100 km in a stralght line north of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. The Madrigal mine is situated in a steep-walled canyon into which the six operating levels "daylight". Production is from cut-and-fill stopes currently producing approximately 740 dry metric tons per day. The Santa Rosa vein, the most important producer in the district, outcrops for a distance of about 4 km, bearing N 75º W and dipping about 70º NE. In places the vein splits into two or three branches; widths of each vary between 1 and 4 m and total mineralized widths of up to over 8 m occur. Principal ore minerals are chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Ore reserve grades for the Madrigal mine average about 1.45% Cu, 2.6% Pb and 5.0% Zn, 2.9 ozAg per metric ton. A THOROUGH knowledge of the behavior of cement slurries under elevated tempera-tures and pressures is necessary in order to solve properly the many problems pre-sented in deep-well cementing operations. In the earlier days of the petroleum indus-try the depths of wells were shallow as compared to those of today, and the subsurface temperatures and pressures were not of sufficient magnitude to affect seriously the problem of proper control of cement-slurry properties. Today, however, the search for new reserves has extended drilling to such depths that bottom-hole temperatures of more than 200°F. and bottom-hole pressures of 3000 to 5000 lb. are not uncommon. Moreover, there is every indication that within the next few years wells will be drilled to even greater depths and bottom-hole temperatures and pressures will be correspondingly higher than those with which we are concerned today. It has been realized for some time that the behavior of cement slurries at high temperatures and pressures might be very different from that at atmospheric tempera-ture-pressure conditions, but while the temperature effects have been investigated with a reasonable degree of thoroughness, the pressure effects have received little public attention. While the trend toward deeper drilling may make changes in cementing technique and the choice of cements imperative, it was the purpose of this investigation to consider factors having a bearing on the latter, only secondary consideration being given, for the present, to details of tech-nique and equipment for oil-field use. More specifically, the purpose of this work was to consider the effect of temperature and pressure upon the behavior of cement slurries.

In the preparation of this paper the writer has drawn freely upon the writings of Orton, Munn, Shaw, Mather, Miller, Hoeing, St. Clair, Jillson, and others, as well as upon his own personal knowledge of the fields of both states. It is to be regretted that certain data gathered by him and his assistants last fall are not available for publication. Oil in Tennessee A few wells drilled for brine for salt making in Tennessee between 1820 and 1840 obtained oil, but no definite search was made for oil until just after the close of the Civil War. Active drilling was then begun in Overton and counties southwest of it on the eastern half of the Highland Rim. A number of strikes were made at shallow depths in the basal part of the Mississippian but the wells were soon exhausted and abandoned. Drilling was revived, about 1892, when the Spurrier district in Pickett County was developed and was followed by the Riverton district in the same county in 1896. A pipe line was laid from the Wayne County, Ky., fields and about 60,000 bbl. of oil were run before a very heavy slump in the production, a failure to find an extension of the field, and excessive local taxation caused the removal of the pipe line in 1906. There was then no production in Tennessee until the discovery, in 1915, of oil near Oneida, Scott Co., at about 950 ft. (289 m.) in fissures in the Newman or St. Louis limestone. This field, however, soon failed and was abandoned. In 1916, oil was found at Glen Mary, Scott Co., in the Newman limestone at a depth of 1232 ft. (375 m.) A number of wells have since been drilled there, some of which were dry while others, close by, were produccrs. The largest one yielded, at first, about 340 bbl. per day and produced for several months, when it suddenly went dry. Several of the first wells began at 6 or 8 bbl. per day and are still maintaining that output. Production is from a fissured part of the limestone and varies greatly in accordance with the size and extent of the ramification of the

The introduction of new fracture propping agents that are brittle but much stronger than sand created the problem of what loading strength is required for a propping agent to be effective in a given formation. It is shown that the load at which the propping agent crushes should exceed the load at which total embedment in the fracture faces is possible. Simple laboratory tests to determine loading strength of the propping agent and embedment in the fracture faces, and use of these data in selecting a propping agent for a given formation, are discussed. INTRODUCTION One of the most important factors in the design of hydraulic fracturing treatments is the selection of a propping agent that can effectively provide the fracture flow capacity needed for stimulation of a well. Sand, once generally accepted as being synonymous with propping agent in hydraulic fracturing, is now recognized as having limited effectiveness in many formations because of its low resistance to crushing. Sand particles are brittle and have relatively low strength. Because of this property, sand particles are crushed in rocks that offer high resistance to the penetration of fracture faces by the proppant particles when the fracture attempts to close under the action of the overburden load. For rocks that offer a high resistance to penetration, deform able particles are more effective propping agents than sand. However, for this same type of rock, a propping agent that does not deform, yet does not crush, is often more effective. Thus, a rigid propping agent with sufficient strength to prevent crushing is desirable. A method for determining the strength required for a rigid propping agent to function effectively in given formations is discussed. BEHAVIOR OF RIGID PROPPANTS AND FRACTURE FACES RELATED STUDIES An early qualitative description of the reaction of propping sand in fractures was given by Hassebroek et al.' In discussing fracturing in deep wells, the authors mentioned that even though propping sand entered the fractures, a high flow capacity did not result due to crushing or embedding of the propping sand. Dehlinger et al.2 in discussing the reaction of propping sand surmised that, because of the hardness of sand particles, deformation occurred in the fracture faces contacting the propping sand. In later studies,3,4 methods of determining the embedment of propping sand in fracture faces of soft rock and the critical load at which propping sand is crushed by the fracture faces in hard rock were discussed. In working with de-formable proppants, Kern et al. considered proppant particles to be deformed into cylindrical disks by action of the overburden and then pressed slightly into the fracture faces by further action of the overburden. Rixie et al.'0 reported on embedment pressure and presented a method of selecting a propping agent for use in given formations. The propping agents included sand, walnut shells and aluminum pellets. All these studies have contributed materially to a better understanding of propping agent behavior; however, the strength of brittle proppants (sand, glass and ceramics) required to result in embedment rather than crushing has not been discussed. This topic will be covered in the ensuing discussion. PROPPANT PARTICLE CRUSHING—-EMBEDMENT For this discussion, a rigid propping agent is considered to be one that is brittle and fails under tensile stress when loaded to a critical value. In an earlier study4 it was shown that the Hertzian4 loading theory could be applied to a spherical brittle propping agent if the propping agent and fracture faces behaved elastically. At the failure of the proppant, the ratio of the load to the square of the diameter of the particle should be constant for a given material combination, or: Lc/dp2=C ............(1) A partial derivation of this equation from proppant and formation properties is included in the Appendix. Should a rigid particle not be crushed as a load is applied, it embeds in the fracture faces. A study3 of particle embedment in fracture surfaces has been published. The embedment can be described by an equation based on Meyer's metal penetration hardness relationships: d1/dp=B 1/2[L/dp2]m/2..........(2) In Eq. 2, B and m are constants that are characteristic of the rock; the significance of the other terms is shown in Fig. 1. In our sessions devoted to geophysical prospecting, the greater part of the time heretofore has been given to the presentation of theoretical subjects or highly technical details by specialists directly engaged in the development and perfection of the various methods. This was necessarily so, for we wanted such information available for the benefit of other workers and for our members who were anxious to gain a reliable understanding of the principles involved, to enable them to form an opinion of the adaptability of this new technique to their special problems. The methods have now been actively applied by many reliable organizations for several years and in this period there has been opportunity for operating mining men, engineers and geologists to appraise them. We therefore felt that it would be desirable at this meeting to give some time to interchange of opinion concerning results from actual cases. Consequently, the Committee on Geophysical Methods of Pros pecting sent out letters of inquiry to numerous mining people, asking for frank statements of opinion based on results from geophysical surveys at their properties. We have received many replies, among which 30 or more are of specific interest. On the whole, the point of view is remarkably uniform. Except for one or two who were, perhaps, a bit irritated, the operating men who have replied consider the methods to be capable of yielding valuable information when suitable conditions exist. Their attitude is definitely one of tolerance and of confidence in the integrity and sincerity of the outstanding workers. There is, however, a very general feeling that the chances of attaining positive and trustworthy results are small unless the work is directed by, or at least carried on with the close cooperation of, a geologist or mining man who is thoroughly familiar with the local geologic and mineralogic conditions and with the relations of the orebodies to rocks and structure. From certain comments, I am inclined to think that some operators are not greatly impressed with the cheapness of the work. Probably they are not attaching much weight to cost per acre, but are thinking primarily of total cost in terms of significant results obtained. It is

IN no part of the world other than a small area in Pennsylvania is anthracite mining an industry of major magnitude. As the deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered a state rather than a national problem. However, there is also national interest in the conservation and wise utilization of all the country's fuel resources and in the control of interstate waterways. The anthracite industry is confronted with a serious problem of water accumulation in many of the mines, a problem that must be solved in the near future if progressively higher mining costs are to be avoided. It cannot be solved by the operating companies without state or Federal aid, or both, owing to the magnitude of the work required, the diversity of interests of the coal and surface ownerships, the hazard to the whole mining community, and interests affected outside the mining region. 'The costs of abating the ever-increasing surface seepage to mine workings and of handling this seepage once it has occurred are beyond the eco¬nomic resources of the operating managements.

INTRODUCTION The Overseas Private Investment Corporation ("OPIC") is a U.S. Government agency mandated to promote the economic development of the less developed countries ("LDCs") by assisting U.S. private investment in the Third World. Generally, investment decisions turn on the optimism or pessimism of the private sector's financial analysis of a project, with market price of product a major unknown in a very chancy set of projections. Discussions with American mineral companies, however, show that, more often than not, in developing country projects it is the political risks of investing in mineral exploration and extraction that pose the most serious deterrent to investment. In several of the projects described here, investments would not have been made if OPIC had not been involved providing support to the project sponsors and their funding sources. Clearly it is not OPIC's business to promote U.S. investment in a project which is not commercially viable, but OPIC's programs can neutralize the political uncertainties which act as disincentives to investment in otherwise commercially viable projects. That is to say, OPIC's programs are designed to reinforce market decisions and not distort them. Although OPIC is an independent agency of the U.S. Government, it is managed by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom come from the private sector. This, coupled with the statutory requirement that it be self-sustaining and operate with due regard for the principles of prudent risk management, requires that it operate on a business-like basis. Although established as a development agency, to the business public OPIC is both an insurance company and a lending institution, with two major programs which are available to U.S. investors in the minerals sector: its political risk insurance program and its finance program. Each has been specially tailored to the meet needs of the mining industry. The insurance program provides coverage against four basic types of political risk: Currency Inconvertibility, Expropriation, loss caused by War, Revolution and Insurrection and Interference with Operations as a result of an act of War, Revolution or Insurrection. Coverage against the risks of Civil Strife can be added to both War, Revolution and Insurrection coverage and Interference with Operations. Inconvertibility coverage provides protection against a deterioration in an investor's ability to convert local currency into U.S. dollars. This deterioration can be the result of either active or passive delays. Active delays consist of a change in exchange laws or regulations that leads to inconvertibility delays of 30 days or more. For example, if the exchange regulations at the time of contract execution allow an investor to transfer earnings equal to 18% of its registered capital per annum and the government of the host country later changes the law to allow conversion of only 12%, the insured would convert the 12% transferable under the new exchange regulations with the government foreign exchange authorities, delivering the remaining 6% to OPIC for conversion at 99% of the then prevailing rate of exchange. (OPIC does not cover devaluation risks.) Upon delivery of the local currency to OPIC, normally at the U.S. Embassy in the project country, the insured's account in the U.S. would be credited with dollars. Delays can also result from what is termed passive blockage, which includes administrative delays of more than 60 days (sometimes longer) caused by the bureaucratic tie-ups or pigeonholding of transfer requests, as well as delays suffered simply because the government of the host country does not have sufficient foreign exchange. The transfer procedure is the same as with active blockage - the local currency is delivered to OPIC in the project country and OPIC provides dollars in the United States at the then prevailing rate of exchange. The second coverage -- Expropriation -protects not only against the loss of the investment due to the well-known risks of expropriation, nationalization or confiscation by the host government, but also against

Electrical prospecting is the art of exploring the structure of the subsoil in regard to conductivity variations and interpreting the results of such exploration as to their geological meaning. Electrical prospecting has been applied during the last few years with outstanding success, not only to prospecting1 for ore but also to structural studies.2 Both applications have proved helpful to the geologist, and the latter application especially promises to become of still greater importance in the future. The mapping of structures is the most important function of the oil geologist. Oil is lighter than water, therefore in water-bearing beds it will migrate upward until the migration is stopped by a bed impermeable to the oil. Geologic structures such as domes, anticlines, faults and terraces, offer good prospects in the search for oil accumulations and can be traced easily by electrical prospecting, provided they are composed of a series of sedimentary layers of which at least one possesses fair electrical conductivity and follows the general trend of the structure. Conditions for Successful Mapping The first condition, fair electrical conductivity, is met in almost any oil-bearing series, because generally the electrical resistance of a sedimentary bed is identical with the resistance of the more or less saline waters, filling partly or entirely the pores of the rocks.3 Briefly, the electrical resistivity of a bed can be expressed for all practical purposes by the product R X P, where R is the specific resistance of the waters in the rock pores and P a factor depending upon the percentage of water by volume in the rock. The present status of integrated circuits utilizing. superconductive switching. elements is reviewed with special attention given to fabrication techniques, methods for interconnecting completed circuits, and refrigeration requirements. Cryoelectronics has been largely an "inte- grated-circuit" technology since its conception because the switching speed of superconductive devices is attractive only when these devices are fabricated with thin-film techniques. It is true that cryotron circuits can be constructed from wires of appropriate materials (as indeed was done by Dudley Buck 1 in his early investigations) but these circuits will switch in times characteristic of milliseconds whereas similar circuits fabricated by thin-film methods have potential switching times of nanoseconds. Furthermore, cryo-electronic devices such as the cryotron lend themselves readily to fabrication by thin-film techniques since these components may be made from polycrys-talline thin films and are relatively insensitive to the presence of impurities (as measured by semiconductor standards). Therefore, during the past decade considerable effort has been devoted to developing techniques for batch fabricating circuit arrays containing superconductive switching elements. Technology had developed to the point several years ago that fabrication of cryoelectronic arrays containing up to one hundred devices was rather straightforward. However, larger arrays containing between lo4 and 106 components which are required for commercial development of cryoelectronics still pose very severe yield problems. Thus in a sense cryoelectronics found itself in 1962 at the point semiconductor technology finds itself today; namely, individual devices and small groups of integrated devices could be fabricated with acceptable yield and the outlook for building larger integrated-circuit arrays was bright. Unfortunately, problems associated largely with yield have made fabrication of these larger arrays difficult. Unlike semiconductor technology, cryoelectronics had to solve the problems of large-scale integration before it could become economically attractive. This has proven to be a sizable burden to bear. Since several reviews exist on superconductivity,2 superconductive devices,3 and cryoelectronic technology, no attempt will be made in this paper to summarize these areas. Instead a few specific topics will be dealt with in more detail. First, a brief description is given of selected superconducting switching and storage devices with special attention to several metallurgical techniques which improve the performance of these devices. Second, techniques used to fabricate cryoelectronic devices are described with emphasis on problems affecting yield. Third, techniques for interconnecting a number of cryoelectronic planes are described. And last, refrigeration of cryoelectronic components is discussed briefly since the low operating temperature of superconductive devices is an important consideration in this technology. SUPERCONDUCTING STORAGE AND SWITCHING DEVICES The basic superconductive switching device is the thin-film cryotron. The geometry of this device is attractively simple, since it involves only the intersection of two lines that are electrically insulated from each other. The switching element (gate) and control element (control) of a crossed-film cryotron are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1. The material for the gate is selected to permit the gate to be switched from the superconducting to the normal (resistive) state by the application of a control current. Tin, which has a critical temperature (T,) of 3.7°K, is commonly used for the gate and the cryotron is operated at a temperature just below T, (for example, 3.5°K). The control material (normally lead, with T, = 7.2°K) is chosen so that the control is never driven normal during circuit operation. To improve cryotron operation, a ground plane, also of lead, is placed under all of the circuitry to act as a diamagnetic shield and improve the current-density uniformity across the width of various thin-film elements. Normally, line widths vary from 0.005 to ^ 0.020 in. and film thicknesses from 300 to 10,000A, although new fabrication techniques make narrower lines feasible. In fabricating cryotrons it is important that the edges of the gate elements be geometrically sharp to avoid undesirable switching characteristics associated with a thinner edge region, Fig. 2. One technique which has been used extensively to form patterns consists of placing a physical mask containing the film pattern between the evaporation source and the substrate and depositing through the mask. Film strips formed in this manner possess a penumbra at the film edges due to shadowing of the evapor-ant under the mask. This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

Improving economic conditions are reflected in the statistical picture of the petroleum and natural gas industry for 1933. Prices were better, demand was greater and the volume of production increased. The increase in the production of gas has been due mainly to the utilization of outlets to the new prolific gas fields of Potter and Tioga counties; of oil, to the growing demand for Pennsylvania grade lubricants. It should be emphasized that nowhere is volume of production more subject to control due to the extensive use of secondary methods of recovery and regional peculiarities than in Pennsylvania. A summary of developments in production for Pennsylvania in 1933 of necessity is brief. The data listed in Table 1 are all too few in number and not all that is desirable from the standpoint of accuracy. No state agency for the collection of data exists, no reports are compulsory. Nevertheless, because of the hearty cooperation of many individuals and public spirited corporations, it is believed that the data are as reliable as are obtainable at the present time. Furthermore, records of the past too often are lost, were never in existence or are fragmentary, to say the least. Illustrative of the condition is the fact that no thorough study of the oil and gas-producing regions has ever been made. The publications of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey upon the subject are noteworthy and valuable, especially the most recent one.' The Survey has been handicapped in the work by lack of time, personnel and funds in addition to the difficulties mentioned previously. It is obvious, therefore, that Table 1 cannot be completed for Pennsylvania. The data simply are not in existence. Officially there are 328 oil and gas pools or fields known by name and 58 distinct sands or horizons, one or more of which are productive of oil and gas in the various pools, but reliable data for only three general regions could be assembled.

The search for oil has required, and without a doubt supplies, a tremendous amount of information on the structure, composition, physical properties, and history of sedimentary rocks. The earliest and most complete source of knowledge is the sample or core of the rock itself, the uses of which are well known. The purpose of this paper is primarily to discuss a new method for obtaining these cores, and to illustrate its use in connection with electrical logs. Most cores have been obtained through a special adaptation of rotary drilling, and the results have been remarkably good, considering the mechanical problems involved. Unfortunately, because of the time and expense, this method cannot be used for the entire length of the drill hole. Even though ingenious contrivances have been evolved in order to reduce the time spent in round trips, such as wire-line coring equipment, mechanical coring still remains too expensive to be carried out continuously. In practice, therefore, one is finally compelled to estimate the probable depths of the more interesting horizons and, allowing a wide margin of safety, to core through those sections only. It is true also that interesting results have been obtained by examining the cuttings brought to the surface by the mud circulated in the well during the process of drilling. The search for oil has required, and without a doubt supplies, a tremendous amount of information on the structure, composition, physical properties, and history of sedimentary rocks. The earliest and most complete source of knowledge is the sample or core of the rock itself, the uses of which are well known. The purpose of this paper is primarily to discuss a new method for obtaining these cores, and to illustrate its use in connection with electrical logs. Most cores have been obtained through a special adaptation of rotary drilling, and the results have been remarkably good, considering the mechanical problems involved. Unfortunately, because of the time and expense, this method cannot be used for the entire length of the drill hole. Even though ingenious contrivances have been evolved in order to reduce the time spent in round trips, such as wire-line coring equipment, mechanical coring still remains too expensive to be carried out continuously. In practice, therefore, one is finally compelled to estimate the probable depths of the more interesting horizons and, allowing a wide margin of safety, to core through those sections only. It is true also that interesting results have been obtained by examining the cuttings brought to the surface by the mud circulated in the well during the process of drilling. The art of ore dressing is as old as civilization itself. Jason's search for the golden fleece was perhaps only the use of sheepskins for catching gold from gold-bearing sands washed over them. From Hoover's translation of Agricola we gather that in the middle ages ore dressing had advanced through the stage of hand sorting to water concentration by jigging. German methods and apparatus continued in the lead until the closing years of the past century; indeed, it is little more than a generation ago that many ore-dressing plants in this country were designed and operated by German-trained ore-dressing specialists. Meanwhile the development of the ore deposits in this country during the nineteenth century brought forth new inventions and methods. Blake's invention of the rock breaker in 1858 and the coming of the Wilfley table about 1896 are random examples of the improvements caused by our expanding needs. Yet ore dressing remained an art developed and practiced more or less by cut and try methods. The publication of the volumes on Ore Dressing by Dr. Robert H. Richards in 1903 marks the beginning of American ore-dressing practice as a science. Previously we had as guides only a few incomplete books based on foreign practice, or scattered references and articles in our own Transactions. Dr. Richards set down all the developments that had gone before, and outlined the ways for a scientific approach to the subject. He gave us a starting point. Since then ore-dressing practice and technique in this country have set the pace for the world. Coal preparation has been called "ore dressing upside down,'' because in ore dressing we generally save a small percentage of the heavy valuable mineral and discard the lighter gangue, whereas in coal preparation we save the larger quantity of light mineral and discard the smaller percentage of heavy waste. By comparison with ore dressing the history of coal preparation is brief, extending backwards hardly 100 years, for although coal had been dug and used locally for centuries it became an important article of commerce only with the coming of the industrial revolution 150 years ago. In new mines it was to he expected that the thickest and purest seams should be worked first. So long as these lasted there was little thought of coal preparation other than hand picking of the larger impurities and simple sizing to supply the real or fancied need

The US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a process for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 ppm W (70 ppm W03). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by USBM chemists, 98% oft he tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92% of the tungsten was recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44% tungsten as tungsten trioxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process research unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal.

In the search for practical geological problems amenable to solution by the potential methods, the geophysicist is led to study mathematically various theoretical cases. In these idealistic discussions, the media under consideration are generally supposed to be homogeneous and iso-tropic. The geophysicist, of course, realizes perfectly that these conditions do not occur in their entirety in reality. However, the assumptions made are justified, because very often they are necessary in order to render possible an exhaustive study of a given problem, which otherwise would be too complicated, and would not lend itself to a complete mathematical analysis. Of the above two assumptions, that concerning the homogeneity of a given geological formation is satisfactorily realized except in so far as isotropy is concerned, since this property is not often encountered in practice. As a consequence, it is very desirable for the geophysicist to have quite an extensive knowledge of the properties of anisotropic formations, and of the laws that govern the propagation of electric current therein. With such principles in mind, he will be able to decide whether the conclusions arrived at in simple, isotropic conditions are still correct in more complex cases, or in what way they must be modified or adapted in order to constitute a sound basis for the interpretation of the results obtained in anisotropic media. On the other hand, the fact that in anisotropic formations the mobility of the ions is greater along the strike than perpendicular thereto can be utilized for determining the direction of the dip by induction measurements. We therefore propose to study in three successive chapters the following points: 1. Propagation of the electric current in anisotropic media. 2. Some consequences of the anisotropy of geological formations with reference to the surface electrical measurements, and their interpretation. 3. Determination of the direction of the dip of anisotropic formations by surface induction measurements.

Experimental and theoretical studies of casing-borne signals have provided data on the attenuation efect, compressive strength and shear modulus for different types of cement. These data resulted in the establishment of a definite relationship between the cement compressive strength and the Cement Bond log reading. The relationship is influenced by the casing dimensions, but is independent of the type of cement and the curing conditions. The theoretical analysis provides a mathematical statement of the phenomenon and shows that the attenuation rate is basically a function of the shear modulus of the cement and the thickness of the casing. The lab tests provided a connection between the shear modulus and the compressive strength, and permitted a comparison of the experimental and theoretical work. The results of the experimental and theoretical study have provided means of quantitative interpretation of the Cement Bond log. This interpretation is made more convenient with the use of a nomograph. INTRODUCTION Past interpretation of Cement Bond logs has been essenlially based upon a qualitative comparison between the log response in the zone of interest and the responses in the "fully cemented" and the "uncemented" intervals. Most of the variables influencing the magnitude of the signals were recognized in an earlier paper'; however, insufficient laboratory data were available at that time for quantitative evaluation of these variables. Early attempts to use the numerical amplitudes of the signals without full knowledge of their significance resulted in erroneous comparisons between various types of cement. An extensive program was undertaken to evaluate, both experimentally and theoretically, the attenuation phenomenon and to study the effects of the more common variables. A major objective of the experimental program was to obtain data on the relationship between cement-bond-tool response and physical property standards used by the industry so that practical interpretation methods could be devised. The studies included a comparison of attenuation rate with these properties as a function of time, temperature and pressure, using common sizes of casing. The main result was that a definite relationship was established between the compressive strength of the cement in inti- mate contact with the casing and the response of the cement bond tool. For a given casing thickness, regardless of the type of cement or the curing conditions used, the attenuation rate is a function of the compressive strength. A theoretical analysis showed that the attenuation rate for casing-borne signals should be a function of (among other things) the shear modulus of the cement and the thickness of the casing. The relationship between the compressive strength and shear modulus for curing times similar to those encountered in the field was determined from laboratory tests. Using this relationship, the computed attenuation rates showed reasonable agreement with the measured attenuation rates. The purpose of this paper is to report the results of the experimental and theoretical investigations and to present the first practical method for a quantitative interpretation of Cement Bond logs based on known variables. This method is applicable where the casing-borne signal is not affected by high-velocity formation arrivals. DESCRIPTION OF LOGGING TOOL The Cement Bond logging tool shown schematically in Fig. 1 has been described previously.' The tool consists of two sections: acoustic and electronic. The acoustic section contains a transmitter and a receiver, usually spaced 3-ft apart. Sonic energy emittted by the transmitter travels through the casing and is detected at the receiver. The field-emission microscope has been adapted for the study of microcrack growth during the early stages of fracture in metal wires. Cracks as small as 6 1 in length can be detected and their growth can be followed to specimen failure. The system is quite useful in searching for microcracks since only sharp-edged surface defects will emit electrons under the experimental conditions. THE conditions leading to brittle fracture were discussed a number of years ago by Griffith1 and the term Griffith Cracks is often used for the small surface cracks which are responsible for brittle fracture. Griffith's theory has been modified by stroh2 and more recent results on metals are discussed by Allen,3 pp. 123-40. At present the phenomenon is not completely understood but there is general agreement that at least in certain materials the sequence leading to brittle fracture involves several stages. The initial microcracks are present because of cooling or working stresses, Hahn et al.,3 p. 95. When a stress is applied to the specimen the cracks grow slowly until the release of stored elastic energy is large enough to accelerate the crack and provide the necessary surface energy for crack growth. At this point the growth rate appears to increase rapidly to some new equilibrium velocity, and failure occurs. Since the microcracks are usually about the size of a single metallic grain (Ref. 3, p. 99) it is not easy to find them and it is very difficult to follow their growth under stress. This paper will report on the use of a cylindrical field-emission microscope for observation of the formation and growth of microcracks. I) THE FIELD-EMISSION MICROSCOPE The field-emission microscope (FEM) has a high magnification and resolution and is almost uniquely suited for observations of microcracks. Since the FEM is relatively new as a metallurgical instrument, a short description will be given here. Normally metals at room temperature do not emit electrons; however in the presence of a strong electric-field gradient, electrons can tunnel out through the reduced potential barrier. Since this tunneling is a function of the local field gradient and the local work function, the emitted electrons can be used to produce a highly magnified image of the surface by allowing them to strike a phosphor screen. Because the electron emission is dependent upon the local field gradient, smooth surfaces emit few electrons except at very high fields. On the other hand cracks, extrusions, or other surface defects, having sharp edges, emit strongly since the field gradient is very high in the vicinity of these defects. This indicates that the FEM should be most useful for detection of microcracks on otherwise smooth surfaces. A field-emission microscope was first used by Muller4 in 1936 for observation of metal surfaces, and recent reviews have been given by Muller5 and Gomer.6 The instrument has been used for metallurgical studies in the area of surface diffusion,= recrystallization,7 and grain growth 8 (Ref. 8 is directed specifically at metallurgists). In the work of Muller4,5 and Gomer 6 the specimen was in the form of a sharp metal point at the center of a phosphor-coated glais sphere. The impact of the emitted electrons on the phosphor produced a highly magnified image of the specimens. Such a system is not practical for applying a controlled stress to the specimen and a cylindrical geometry has been used in this investigation. This allowed the application of a controlled tensile stress to the wire specimen. Normally a cylindrical FEM geometry produces magnification only in the radial direction. This is the case because a smooth wire at the center of a cylinder produces a purely radial electrical field. However, if there is a break in the smooth surface of the inner cylinder, the field near the break becomes three-dimensional and the area of the break is highly magnified. The reason for this is clear if it is recalled that the field gradient depends on the relative radii of the inner and outer cylinders; if a crack forms, its edge radii are of atomic dimensions and a very high field gradient is formed near these crack edges. Since the electrons receive most of their acceleration near the crack edge and are always traveling perpendicular to the field lines, they tend to spread out and produce the magnified image observed in the cylindrical field-emission microscope. 11) BRITTLE-FRACTURE STUDIES A) Experimental Apparatus. At the meeting of the Board of Directors of this Institute on Feb. 16, 1915, the 14 members of the Board present unanimously elected Professor Kemp an Honorary Member. The nomination of Professor Kemp was signed by 21 members of the Institute, none of whom are members of the Board of Directors, and recited his qualifications for Honorary Membership in the following terms: Professor Kemp graduated from Amherst College in the class of 1881, and from the School of Mines, Columbia University, in the class of 1884. After serving as instructor in geology in Cornell University for a few years he was called back to Columbia as adjunct professor in 1891, was made full professor the following year, and has since filled that office with dignity and honor. Among the first to recognize they importance of igneous rocks in the formation of orebodies, his studies have contributed greatly to that increase of knowledge of economic geology in which the Transactions of the Institute has had an influential part, and he is recognized both abroad and in this country as one of the most distinguished scholars in geology which America has produced. This recognition is evident in the honorary degrees of Sc. D. conferred on him by Amherst College in 1906, and LL. D. conferred by McGill University in 1913, as well as by election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of. Christiania, and the Geological Society of. Stockholm. Professor Kemp was a Manager of the American Institute of Mining Engineers from 1896 to 1898, Vice-President from 1903 to 1904, a Director from 1905 to 1912, President and President of the Board of Directors in 1912, and Past President since that time. During these years he has labored loyally for the upbuilding of the Institute, serving on many committees, as well as in the offices enumerated. He has also served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and on the governing board of the Geological Society of America and the New York Botanical Gardens. His service is not confined, however, to these labors for the good of the profession and his contributions to exact knowledge of geology. In his almost 25 years as a professor in Columbia University there have come under his influence a great group of young men in whom he has inspired unflagging zeal in the search for truth, and to whom he has set an example of unselfish service. The value of such a service cannot be overestimated and in electing him to Honorary Membership the Institute would officially recognize the measure of appreciation which his professional colleagues have long accorded to him.
