The problem of making a building unit combining the necessary physical and mechanical properties and good thermal insulation has been foremost in the minds of architects and ceramic and construction engineers for many years. This paper presents the results of studies on thermally expanding shales or clays to produce lightweight cellular products suitable for making building units. An expanded clay block suitable for building purposes should be large enough qo that substantial savings may be effected in labor costs in laying the wall. The permeability should be low and it should have sufficiently good "dry-wall" characteristics to permit exposing the exterior surface to the elements, and to permit plastering directly the inside wall surface. The thermal conductivity should be low and the mechanical properties should be adequate. Obviously, a unit possessing satisfactory qualities for constructing an - outside wall would be satisfactory for interior walls and for back-up purposes. The results of studies on bloating various shales or clays† and the properties of the expanded products are reported. In another paper1 basic factors involved in bloating of clays are discussed. Manufacturers of ceramic products, partitularly structural clay, may encounter bloating of the ware during burning, and precautions must be followed to avoid this phenomenon. About 1927 the C. F. Burgess Laboratories, Madison, Wis., while carrying on an investigation for the American Face Brick Research Corporation, conceived the idea of intentionally bloating clay while holding it in a restrained condition, with the hope of producing a unitary cellular mass. Work was carried on until about 1931, when studies were terminated because of business conditions. These studies were continued later by The Western Brick Co., Danville, Ill., which developed a process of "inwardly expansive bloating."² The major purpose of the latter investigation was to produce back-up tile to compete with concrete blocks made from Haydite or cinder aggregate. Haydite is a light-weight aggregate formed by heating certain clays or shales rapidly in a rotary kiln. While the investigations at the C. F. Burgess Laboratories or at Western Brick Co. were not carried far enough to lead to the commercial production of material for the construction of walls, particularly outside walls, they showed that certain clays could be thermally expanded and that it was possible to produce a material of low permeability with a large percentage of the total voids or cells closed. commencing in 1939, the Ozark Chemical Co. sponsored a research program at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Purpose Of determining whether it is technically feasible to make thermally expanded building units, and specifically to get answers to the following questions:

HIGH explosives, particularly nitroglycerin, have been used in torpedoes for the purpose of shooting oil and gas wells for more than 60 years. The early history of the oil industry in Pennsylvania is not clear as to who actually torpedoed the first well, although in 1865 the Roberts Torpedo Co. procured a patent covering the process. Gunpowder was first used, although nitroglycerin was substituted shortly afterwards. Wells are shot for the purpose of increasing the flow of oil and gas A shot-hole in the producing horizon, with its contributory fissures and fractures, increases the area of and stimulates drainage into the hole. The shot-hole also acts as a collecting basin from which the oil is pumped. As a rule, hard or close-grained sands or limes are shot, other more or less porous and soft formations usually do not require shooting. and might be injured by blasting. Shooting is also resorted to in mechanical trouble such as straightening crooked holes, sidetracking pipe or tools, and for severing frozen strings of casing or drill pipe. Explosives arc also used sometimes to extinguish oil or gas-well fires although that work, which involves unusual conditions and methods, does not properly come within the classification of oil-well shooting. Some Factors to Be Considered in Shooting Wells Although nitroglycerin has been used extensively for more than half a century in shooting oil and gas wells, there is still a great deal of uncertainty as to the proper method of shooting or the amount of explosive required to produce best results in a particular formation. The possibility of shooting unproductive or cavey formations above or below the productive horizons, shooting into lower water, destroying casing seats, and the splitting or collapsing of casing strings, are factors that require consideration. The engineering departments of a number of the larger oil companies are making a study of methods of shooting, and the amounts of liquid nitroglycerin or other explosives required in shooting various productive

Thermodynamic data for the stable carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten have been critically eualuuted and are used to determine the stable condensed phases at 1 atm total pressure in each metal-carbon-oxygen system. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures neces.see)*y to oblain these metals by corbolhermic redlrction under reduced pressures. USING recently reported data for the carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, the stable phases in the Group VI metal-carbon-oxygen systems at specific temperatures and pressures can be determined. The thermodynamically stable regions in each metal-carbon-oxygen system can be completely pictured using a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram in which the two coordinates are oxygen potential (-RT In Po2) and temperature. Worrell and chipman' have described and constructed such diagrams for the metal-carbon-oxygen systems of vanadium, columbium, and tantalum. Downing2 has used similar diagrams to provide a description of the reactions in submerged arc furnaces. One of the examples which he cited was the Cr-C-O system; however, an improved diagram is presented in this paper using recently obtained data for the carbides of chromium. Although some of the oxides and carbides of the Group VI metals exist over slight ranges of composition,3 all solid phases are represented as stoi-chiometric compounds in the subsequent diagrams. Any error introduced into the calculated equilibria by neglecting the compositional variation of these phases is less than the uncertainty in the thermodynamic data. In a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram for a three-component system, the phase rule requires that at equilibrium four condensed phases specify a point, three condensed phases determine a line, and two condensed phases define an area. To obtain a well-defined area at high oxygen potentials and teniperatures, the initial carbon to oxygen mole ratio is specified to be more than sufficient to reduce the oxide but not enough to convert all the metal to carbide. Thus, the lowest regions in the subse- quent Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams represent areas in which the metal and its carbide are the stable condensed phases. Cr-C-O SYSTEM A) Thermodynamic Data. To simplify the subsequent calculations, all thermodynamic data are presented in the form of linear Gibbs-energy-of-formation* equations which were derived for the temperature range 505° to 2000°K and are reasonably accurate over the entire temperature ranges of the diagrams. The thermodynamic data for the compounds occurring in the Cr-C-O system are summarized in Table I. Several volatile chromium oxides have been reported,4 but their influence is negligible in the Cr-C-O system. Thermodynamic data for CO and CO2 were taken from the compilation of Coughlin.5 The only solid chromium oxide sufficiently stable to exist below 1800°K in the Cr-C-O system is Cr2Os.11 The Gibbs-energy-of-formation equation for Cr2O3 was obtained by revising the data tabulated in Coughlin,5 using the heat of formation of ah' and the high-temperature thermal data for chromium.7 In 1953 Richardson8 re-evaluated the original work of Kelley and coworkers,9 who measured the thermodynamic properties of the chromium carbides. However, the high-temperature equilibrium results of Boericke9 yield values for ?G°f of Cr2O3 which are 2 kcal more positive than the accepted data. His results for the chromium carbides are based on the same questionable equilibria. Gleiser10 recently determined the Gibbs energy of formation of Cr3C2 and the equation in Table I was calculated from her data and the thermal data of Kelley and coworkers.9 Thermodynamic data for the Cr7C3 and Cr23C6 carbides were obtained by combining the Cr3C2 data

Lattice parameters for the wurtzite form of' CdS mere measured by powder X-ray diffraction techniques over the temperature range 26° to 1000 K'. A negative thermal -expansion coefficient was determined parallel and perpendicular to the c axis below 13.5°K. Near 808°K, the curves of the a, parameter, the differential thermal expansion, and the resistivitv vs absolute temperature exhibited a reversible discontinuity. j\. direct determination of the lattice parameters of CdS over an extended temperature range is of particular use in interpretation of the effects of high pressure on the band structure of semiconductor materials. For example, Langer' has studied the effects of pressure on the absorption edge of CdS from 77°K to room temperature. In order to properly interpret his results it is necessary to know the change in lattice constants as a function of temperature for the wurtzite, zincblende, and rocksalt2 modifications of this material. Thermal-expansion measurements for CdS, wurtzite phase, have previously been determined over a limited temperature range.s74'5 The zincblende phases, of other compounds with similar bonding, have been investigated by Novikova et a! .'' Previous thermal-expansion measurements for metals with hexagonal symmetry have for the most part used bulk sample techniques for low-temperature result. Most X-ray measurements at low temperature have been on materials with cubic symmetry.'jQ The use of X-ray powder-diffraction techniques offers a convenient and accurate method of measurement over a wide temperature range. The X-ray method, besides measuring unit cell size, also provides information about change in structure type and the nature of some of the stacking defects present. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermal expansion was measured by X-ray powder-diffraction techniques. Lattice parameters for the range 300" to 1000°K were determined in a 19-cm Unicam camera. From 26" to 300°K a 34-cm back-reflection camera with the Van Arkel" film arrangement was used. The sample was bonded to a copper cold finger below a helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, dry ice, or ice brine bath in a metal cryistat. che inner bath was surrounded by another one for radiation shielding. Nitrogen was used in this outer bath for the very low-temperature runs while dry ice and acetone was used for the 195°K point. CuKa X-rays, filtered with a nickel foil, entered the cryostat through a 0.001-in.-thick aluminum window. During a typical 9-hr exposure the sample was continuously rotated through a 30-deg arc. Heat losses from the sample holder limited the minimum temperature attained to 26°K with helium in the inner dewar. Temperature calibration between 25" and 125°K was determined with an Allen Bradley 300-ohm carbon resistor. The resistor was attached to the back of the copper finger with a thin layer of silicone grease. Liquid He, HZ, N2, and O2 baths were used to calibrate the resistor. Temperature variation is estimated to be *2"K with a slightly higher uncertainty at room temperature and 264°K. The thermal expansion of high-purity germanium from 373" to 900°K was measured as a calibration for the Unicam camera. This value was compared with the known value1' for the thermal expansion. A discontinuity in the thermal-expansion coefficient of the CdS a, parameter was observed. Similar discontinuities in the resistivity and differential thermal analysis at the same absolute temperature indicate that the temperature error is *5°K in the temperature range above 500°K. Temperature errors in the Unicam camera below 500°K are appreciably higher due to large gradients in the resistance furnace. II) SAMPLE PREPARATION The CdS was Eagle Picher ultrapure grade. INTRODUCTION The basic factors that influence the selection of a mining method are the geometry of the ore deposit and the strength of the ore and surrounding rock. These factors usually determine the ore recovery and dilution of the deposit under analysis. For the purpose of this paper we will consider a generalized case of a block caving system and the sequence of the analysis needed to optimize ore recovery. The analysis presented is intended for the preliminary planning stage. The critical factors involved in the caving process are identified and the methods for evaluating the suitability of a particular deposit to the caving method of mining are outlined. The mine design is approached by identifying the two most important, dimensions: the size and spacing of the draw points. These dimensions are estimated from a simulation model which takes into account the ore recovery, the incremental value of the ore recovered, and the safety conditions of the operations. The model estimates the number of draw points required to extract efficiently and safely the broken ore from the caving area. This number is found in the range where the net incremental value of the ore is maximized and the probability of pillar failure does not exceed the limit which is acceptable for a safe mining operation. A mining method and its design are in a continuous process of optimization. This process is unique for each deposit because of the many parameters involved; therefore, a back analysis of the operations should be performed when possible. These analyses will indicate if the ore body responds in a predictable manner to the parameters contained in the geological, fragmentation, and draw point models. SELECTION OF ALTERNATIVE MINING METHODS The selection of a mining method best suited to define the minable ore reserves of a given deposit involves consideration of the geometry of the ore deposit and the strength of the ore and surrounding rock. These two factors are usually sufficient to determine the ore recovery and dilution of the deposit. After analyzing the geological reserves and defining the limits of the deposit, either an open pit or an underground mining method can be selected to define the minable ore reserves. The sequence of steps to follow in the selection of a mining method is presented in Figure I. From an economic point of view, the strip- ping ratio is the determining factor for the selection between an underground or open pit method. In turn, the stripping ratio is a function of the grade distribution and con- figuration of the ore body. In order to obtain a preliminary estimation of the stripping ratio, a parametric analysis could be applied, such as the approach used by Professor E. P. Pfleider (1972) and summarized in Table 1.

There are found in nature upward of II2 minerals containing antimony, but only a few of them, listed in Table I, can be considered as antimony ore-forming minerals. Stibnite (Sb2S3), antimony sulphide or glance, is the principal ore of antimony. The oxide ores—cervantite, kermesite, valentinite, sernarmontite—occur sparingly in nature. Dry methods are generally adopted for the extraction of the metal. Electrometal-lurgical methods have had much attention in America and Germany and have not yet found, on economic grounds, practical or extended application, except in a few places. During recent years, treatment of the poor grades of the ore, especially sulphide, by ore-dressing methods, has commanded some attention and been adopted at a few plants. The impure sulphide of antimony, resulting from the liquation process, is called lLneedle," "liquated" or "crude" anti- mony, and the refined metal itself is called antimony "regulus." The different processes for the treatment of antimony ores are shown in the diagram of Fig. I. Liquation of Crude Antimony The first step in the smelting of antimony is a simple one, the process of LLliquation," which produces crude or needle antimony. Ores containing $ 50 per cent Sb are used in the liquation process for the production of crude. The temperature required for liquation is between 550' and 600°C. Ores to be liquated are broken to about walnut size. If the pieces are larger than this, the low heat used will not penetrate' effectively, and if they are smaller the ore tends to pack too closely for adequate penetration. A packed charge also prevents the free escape of the fused sulphide. EARLY in the development of every oil field, the operators of relatively large tracts of land must decide upon a spacing plan for the wells to be drilled upon their respective tracts. Usually it is desirable to have a system of regular spacing laid out over the entire tract, making such adjustments as may be necessary near land boundaries. Unless the dip of the producing formation is very steep, the equilateral triangular arrangement is the one most generally preferred, for the very good reason that it gives the maximum amount of drainage area for the wells up to the limit at which mutual drainage interference begins. Assuming that the equilateral triangular pattern is to be used, there still remains to he decided the matter of distance between wells. Many variable factors enter into the problem of proper spacing, some of which are physical and some economic. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss these factors, as that has been done in several comprehensive articles during the past few years. In the end the decision must be based upon an estimate of the relative importance of various factors which apply to the field in question and to economic conditions in the oil industry at the time the development is getting under way. Even if the best possible spacing distance should be chosen when the problem arises, changing economic conditions and variation in physical conditions in different parts of the field may cause the original choice to become more or less unsatisfactory. Obviously, it is advantageous, once a spacing plan has been adopted, to avoid alteration of it as the field becomes better known or as conditions in the industry change, and yet be able to vary somewhat, the acreage per well in extending the area of development. Or, it may be desired to provide for an ultimate spacing considerably closer than conditions seem to warrant early in the development of the field. With these contingencies in mind, it is of interest to examine the possibilities which the equilateral triangular system affords. Orientation of Coordinate System In this system the well locations may be considered as the inersectionst of three sets of coordinate lines, the lines of each set intersecting those of the other two sets at 60. Mr. Cox is resigning his position as president of Carnegie-Illinois to take the new post with Kennecott, left vacant by the death of Mr. Stannard in September. •The ECA signed a contract in December to advance X3,600,000 to Newmont Mining Corp. to aid development of lead and zinc mines in French Morocco. The funds are to be repaid in lead and zinc for the United States' stockpile over a period of seven years. The mines are owned by the Societe des Mines de Zellidja, with which organization Newmont is associated. • Under the direction of John M. Brooks, Jr., general manager, the Matahambra mine in Cuba, will probably produce sufficient tonnage to make 4 million lb of copper per month during 1950. The grade is presently running between 7 and 10 pet. •S. H. Ash reports that the fatality rate per million-man-hr for the anthracite industry for 1949, through November, is 0.78. This is 15 pct better than that achieved during 1948, which was the lowest fatal injury rate in coal mining history. The first full year on record without a major disaster was recorded in 1949 (p. 34). •The Atomic Energy Commission has authorized the production of 200 lb of uranium metal for use under AEC license in non-Commission research projects. •A national survey of projected 1950 purchases of new machine tools, machine tool accessories, materials handling equipment, etc., just completed by the American Society of Tool Engineers reveals that, of the companies reporting, 80 pct state that they plan to buy either more equipment or the same amount as in 1948. • Armour Research Foundation is conducting investigations for the use of clay and shale deposits to make lightweight aggregates. The material is heated until it expands and forms material suitable for mixing with cement which it is hoped will be lighter, stronger, have better insulating qualities and will lower the cost of concrete. •In the first six months of 1949 the bituminous coal miners' average hourly earnings were $1.94 -as compared with X1.392_ national average for all manufacturing. Average annual earnings of full-time employees in the bituminous coal mines in 1948 were $3387 as compared with $2809 for all industry. •LaSalle Business Bulletin reports: "year ends on a rising trend in industry and trade ... nearly record-breaking demand from almost all sources keeps business high... most indicators but little below postwar peak... forces keeping activity high arestill powerful--changes in general business conditions likely to be slow and moderate." •Office of Internal Trade of the Commerce Department requests that technical data significant to the national security which is to be sent outside of the United States be submitted to it for an official opinion on the desirability of transmitting such information. This voluntary compliance program is part of our national security control. • Blast furnace slag reduced to 12 to 16 mesh is being used for sanding track at the Mont Coal mines of Armco. The slag replaces silica sand which caused silicosis. It has proved so effective and cheap that tests are being made to use the slag for rock dusting.

An experimental investigation of the relative effectiveness of standard bullets and "shaped charges" in perforating dense, hard formations is reported. A method is described which simulates the conditions under which a shot is normally fired. Results are evaluated on the basis of depth of penetration, extent 01 Fracturing. extent and nature of formation damage, and other physical characteristics. INTRODUCTION A study was made of the relative merits of bullets and "shaped charges'' as applied to well completions in hard, dense formations such as those encountered in the Permian Basin. The planning of the laboratory program stipulated that core samples should be prepared and mounted in such a way that perforation shots of either kind"" could be fired into them, keeping the factors pertinent to good shooting practice similar to what they would be in a well. The shooting was done in a buried tank. with the sample and shooting equipment covered with water. The depth of water was calculated to he sufficient to simulate the inertial effects of well fluids for the duration of an explosion (a few micro-seconds). Flow measurements were attempted on the specimens after perforation. Due to the lack of uniformity of the limestone, shale breaks. etc., these measurements proved to be of little value to the study. The mounting materials were removed. so that the character of the penetration. fracturing, etc., could be observed. METHOD Laboratory samples were selected from the hard. dolomitic sand cores from Block 31 Field. Core pieces having a 3 3/4 in. diameter and a useful length of 10 to 12 in. were used. Selection was aimed at those pieces having a minimum of shale streaks and other irregularities. The ends were cut off square Manuscript received in the Petroleum Branch office June 28, 1951. Prior to lbeing mounted. the cores were soaked in water to prevent them from absorbing water out of the wet concrete, thus weakening it. A set of steel capsules was fabricated for holding the core Samples. Seven-in. casing was cut in two-ft lengths. of which one end was closed by "orange-peeling" and welding, and the other was threaded to accept a standard bull plug. The bull plugs were fitted with copper tube connections .so that pressure could be applied when the capsules were made up. The cores were mounted in the capsules by means of wire centralizers whose function was to hold the Core in proper position while concrete was poured and set. THE Verde mining district is in Yavapai County, in north-central Arizona. Jerome, the principal town, has a population of 6000 and the two important mines of the district-the United Verde and the United Verde Extension-lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft. (1463 and 1676 m.) respectively, both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which the ore is hauled to the smelters. Clarkdale, the smelter town for the United Verde mines, lies in the Verde valley 4.1 miles (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel and Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 miles long and has a compensated grade of 4 per cent. At Clarkdale it connects with the Verde valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad. Clemenceau, the smelter town for the United Verde Extension mine, lies 3.5 miles (5.8 km.) in a southeasterly direction from Clarkdale, at an elevation of 3420 ft. It is connected to the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad at Clarkdale by the Arizona Extension R. R., . a subsidiary of the United Verde Extension Mining Co. The portal of the haulage tunnel, at an elevation of 3757.5 ft., is also connected with the smelter town by 4 miles of standard-gage track belonging to? the same company. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the highest peaks of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. Two lava-capped mesas, known as "Mingus" and "Wood chute mountains," form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the Old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome, or Verde, mining district. If the . smelter towns are not included, a strip about 7 miles long by 3 miles (11 by 5 km.) wide, embraces practically all of the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from First View, 2 miles northwest from Jerome, to the vicinity of Allen Springs, at the south end of Mingus mountain and all within the boundaries of the Prescott national forest reserve.

Late in 1942, the increasing demand for zinc, coupled with the growing shortage of miners and the knowledge that some abandoned mines would have to be reopened for prospecting and development, led to considerable thought as to the possibilities of further mechanization in order to conserve man power. The ore bodies, locally termed "sheet ground," are an important ore bed in some mines and are in the lower part of Boone formation of the Mississippian Series. Some mines contain interbedded layers of nearly pure galena and sphalerite in horizontal sheets ranging in thickness from a thin seam to several inches and is persistent over large areas. This type of ore body offered the best opportunity for study and experiments. The use of Jumbo drill carriers was advanced but some doubt was expressed as to the adaptability of Jumbos as then in use to mine headings as compared to post and arm mounting (Fig I). Another consideration was the introduction of truck haulage when several mines were trackless. A drill frame, built to carry 2 4-in. drifters, was mounted on a truck chassis. This design proved a failure as it was not rigid and the resiliency of the tires and springs allowed too much play. Long screw jacks were then used to hold the truck firmly in place, but placing the jacks and securing the truck required more effort and time than setting up post drills, so the truck carrier was abandoned. The use of a bull dozer underground had been under consideration for some time to be used in "brunoing" the broken dirt from behind pillars and other inaccessable places so the slusher drags could load without double dragging the dirt. A dozer with hydraulic blade lift was purchased and R. I. Tuthill, Superintendent of Section 30 Mines, suggested that a long drill arm be substituted for the blade, and the drills mounted on the cross member. The hydraulic lift would permit drilling holes at any required spacing. The "cat" was very mobile and answered the problem of a trackless mine. The initial tests showed that the "cat" would make a good carrier, but the hydraulic controls were not positive enough to keep the drills in alignment while drilling. The next step was to build a small hoist. This hoist was attached to the power take-off on the "cat" and by means of sheaves and a double line of 3/8-in. hoist cable, a positive control for raising and lowering the boom was obtained. To avoid serious injuries to the drillers should the cable break, a safety chain was fastened to the drill boom and hooked into a slot in the back of the "cat" frame. A different power unit was obtained for the "cat," as a state law prohibited the use of internal combustion engines in mines. A custom machine shop had just placed on the market a small hoist powered by a Model A Ford engine that had been very ingeniously converted to a slide valve engine using compressed air. Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO,), brucite (Mg[OH],) , dolomite (CaMg[CO,],), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe],- SiO,) , talc (H,Mg,[SiO,],) , and serpentine (H,Mg,Si,O,) . These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia- containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with sea-water or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombo- hedral carbonates which includes calcite (Ca- CO,) , siderite (FeCO,) , and rhodocrosite (MnCO,) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC0,-Cam, series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or "amorphous" (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellqw, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity. Advancement in the art of burning fuels for steam generation has been so marked and so rapid in the last 10 or 15 years that one may well hesitate to classify as unsuitable for stationary steam boiler firing any material having a fuel value. This statement should not be interpreted to mean that any existing boiler plant can successfully utilize any fuel with which it might be supplied. It does mean, however, that almost without exception it is possible to design and construct stationary boiler plants so that they can be operated with whatever coal is the economic supply therefor. In considering the subject of the use classification of coals, it must be recognized, first, that the suitability or unsuitability of a coal for certain uses or conditions may be largely a matter of opinion and, second, that as advancement in the art of burning fuels continues, fuels that may have been considered unsuitable may later be regarded as entirely suitable. This is well illustrated in the creation of a market for slack bituminous coal and for the finer sizes of anthracite that resulted from the development of mechanical stokers adapted thereto. Coke breeze is another fuel of which large tonnages were formerly wasted, that has now been found suitable for use in properly designed furnaces. Again, results that would have been thought quite impossible a generation ago are being obtained in steam boiler plants today with lignites of high moisture content and with coals of excessive ash content. It must, however, be admitted that oftentimes an existing boiler plant can be successfully operated with only a limited number of the coals that are available as possible supplies. We may briefly consider some of the more important factors that may affect the suitability of coals for such a plant. Insufficient or barely sufficient draft to meet peak steam demands is often a limiting factor, and the permissible frequency of fire-cleaning periods is another. In some cases, the action of the molten coal ash on refractory furnace linings prohibits or makes inadvisable the use of certain coals. MANY independent studies are being made on slag-metal relationships in the open-hearth furnace, and these studies cannot help but result in an ultimate improvement in the quality of open-hearth steel of both the open and killed types In maintaining quality control at the National Tube Company's plant, emphasis has been placed on an evaluation of the iron oxide content of the steel in as quantitative a manner as possible, in order that the most desirable level of oxidation might be obtained for a given type of steel, and to secure a more precise basis for final deoxidation In the past, various methods were used for estimating FeO content of the metal at tap to ensure uniform and thorough deoxidation of killed steel, avoiding over-deoxidation to minimize the amount of inclusions present and to make as sound a steel as possible For the open-type steels, such control involves obtaining the necessary level of oxidation for the most suitable action of the steel in the molds to provide good surface quality and cross section for the specific grade involved While rapid analytical methods are available for determination of FeO in the liquid metal, such methods are still not sufficiently rapid for routine control on the open-hearth floor, nor do such analyses provide information as to what causes high or long FeO values The method of sampling can still be considered a problem in view of the variability encountered in taking simultaneous duplicate tests With the accurate rapid methods now available for determining carbon in the metal, estimating slag basicity and obtaining temperatures of liquid metal, it was believed possible to determine the influence of the various furnace reactions in establishing the state of oxidation at a given time Simultaneous slag and metal tests were used in this analysis, aided by statistical methods, to determine the factors that affect the metal FeO, and also to make a quantitative evaluation of these factors Data obtained are from actual furnace operations, the metal test being of the spoon, Herty type, and taken in duplicate. The solubilities of the transition metals from scundium to nickel, inclusive, in liquid cadmium were determined by sampling saturated solutions. At 400°C these solubilities (ppm) are:Sc, Co, 22; Ni, 12000. Relative partial molal enthalpies and excess partial molal entropies at infinite dilution for the solutes Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co are compared zoitlz similar data for the post-transition metals. Three new intermetallic phases, ScCd,, TiCd, and Ti,Cd, encozaztered in the course of this work, are reported. Measurements of the solubility of the 3-d transition metals in liquid cadmium have been reported' only for iron. The present measurements for the entire series were made as an aid to the study of the systematics of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus and sampling techniques used for the solubility determinations were similar to those described by Martin etal.' Temperatures were measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple sheathed in recrystallized alumina and immersed in the solution. The thermocouple was recalibrated periodically during the course of the investigation. Thermocouple voltages were measured to the neares 0.01 mv with a Rubicon model 2732 potentiometer. A scaled-down version of the apparratus, in which the total metal charge was about 90 g, was employed to measure the solubility of scandium. Two-mm ID Vycor filter pipets were used to sample the scandium-cadmiurn solutions; the samples weighed about 2g- Cadmium with a minimum purity of 99.95 pct was used; the only impurities detected spectrochem-ically were C'u and Mg, both less than 10 ppm. The purities of the other metals were: scandium, 99.9 pct; titanium. 99.92 pct; vanadium, 99.9 pct; chromium, 99).99 pct; manganese, 99.9+ pct; iron, 99.90 pct; cobalt, 99.95 pct; and nickel, 99.96 pct. Solidified melts were routinely analyzed spectro-graphically. No significant contamination by the crucible, sampling pipets, or other materials of construction was observed. The entire specimen obtained by sampling was dissolved to preclude analytical errors due to segregation on cooling. Colorimetric methods3 were used for the analyses of cobalt (2-nitroso-l-naphthol), manganese (permanganate), nickel (dimethylglyoxime), titanium (peroxide), and vanadium (thiocyanate).4 Chromium, iron, and scandium were neutron-irradiated to produce The dissolved samples were gamma-counted to determine solute concentration.For the separation of intermediate phases from cadmium-rich alloys selective leaching by saturated ammonium nitrate solutions was employed. The concentration of cadmium in the successive leaches was followed polarographically and the process was terminated when the rate of cadmium dissolution decreased markedly. For the further investigation of intermediate phases 1/4- in. diam powder compacts were pressed at 80,000 psi and annealed in argon at 315" to 330°C for 10 days. Larger quantities of alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum capsules heated in a rocking furnace.

Having collected the required data on the characteristics of the coal and the results secured with different types of machines under different sets of conditions, it is necessary to decide what method of treatment should be used. The interpretation of the experimental data is no small part of the problem. The first step in the investigative work is to determine from the characteristics of the coal and the manner of occurrence of the impurities whether it is possible to separate the dirt from the coal and produce a washed coal of the required quality. Then it is necessary to select the type of washer or the system of treatment that will produce the greatest amount of washed coal of this grade for the least cost. To secure this information, tests may be made at laboratories operated by consulting or contracting engineers, at the testing plants of machinery manufacturers, at commercial washeries, or in an experimental washery erected on the site of the proposed plant. Such tests will produce figures in which every factor, including analyses of raw coal and washed coal and yield of washed coal, may vary widely. The use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material must be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, granulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, but to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits. Methods of Placing Sand Sand may be transported and placed underground by several methods, which may be classified as follows: 1. By Hand.—The sand, which must be comparatively dry, is taken down the shaft in cars on cages and is distributed to its destination in these cars, or it is dumped down raises and is drawn off and distributed by means of cars, wheelbarrows or scrapers.

It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts From Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a Rope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone.
